ZANZIBAR FOR BEGINNERS – A CRAZY LOVE STORY The recently published book, Zanzibar for Beginners – a crazy Love story” talks about the challenges of a bicultural relationship. Sofie, a German woman in her best age, travels to Zanzibar to visit a friend and to attend the legendary Busara-Festival in Stonetown. In a nightclub she meets Seif, a young Tanzanian musician. What starts as a pleasant conversation with mutual understanding soon and against all reason turns into a passionate love affair. The book reflects differences in values and mindsets between African and European culture. Even though it is not a travel guide - as the first part of the title may suggest - it mentions a lot of places to see in Dar, Bagamoyo and Zanzibar and thus can give tourists good information about Zanzibarian lifestyle while reading an exciting novel. The author, Catharina Aanderud, has been living in Zanzibar on and off since 2018. The island inspired her to write this book. After many non-fiction books and biographies this is her second novel. The book is available now in three MAK books and brain stores in Dar es Salaam (Magasaki, Mlimani City, Airport) and at Memories in Zanzibar. For more information, What’ Sup +49 175 162 11 52

Travel Through History in Stone Town - The former Capital of the Omani Empire, Stone Town was the base from which the earliest trading caravans weaved their way to the Congo in search of ivory and slaves. It was also the place where explorers like Livingstone and Stanley planned their journeys, which later led to the colonization of East Africa. Recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town has a wealth of historical and beautiful buildings that visitors can spend days exploring. The city’s sites exhibit a blend of Middle Eastern, Indian, and African traditions and architectures. Arrange a walking tour with a local guide who can lead you through the winding alleyways to the House of Wonders, the Arab Fort, the Slave Market, and Africa House.

n Tanzania, a land of superb landscapes and spectacular wildlife, another attraction stands equally tall- the people. Tanzania’s people are among the most welcoming and approachable on earth, with a range of fascinating cultures ready to be shared with visitors. From the wachagga of the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the now world-famous Maasai, a cultural excursion or a longer stay among local people is likely to become one of the most rewarding experiences of any holiday I Tanzania. In addition, many local areas run their own cultural programmes for visitors, bringing income directly to the community and giving the people the chance to show their lifestyle to the outside world on their own terms. Primary schools can be developed through a tour of the fascinating slopes of Mt Meru; a health clinic is improved through a guided tour of the luscious green Usambara Mountains, or a kindergarten funded by a stroll through the tropical vegetation of the Rift Valley.

Stretching all the way from Malawi and Mozambique, the Eastern Arc Mountains’ biodiversity is at its most magnificent in Udzungwa. This is where you can track some of Africa’s rarest species, some of them never seen by western eyes before 1990.

Udzungwa is blessed with a unique backdrop: an uninterrupted string of forest-clad mountains and cascades. The jaw-dropping Sanje waterfall is one of many providing the surrounding region with precious water resources. Ranging from lowlands to altitudes of over two kilometres, the area is covered by a staggering 3,300 plant species and around 600 types of trees – open areas are hard to find. The star-chestnut without any side branches for the first 15-20 meters is one of the most striking trees you will come across. Some other notable trees species include the fig tree with its huge buttressed trunk, the red mahogany that grows up to 60 meters and the plum tree, whose ripening purple fruits are magnets for elephants. This diverse jungle attracts the most stunning creatures, from mammals to birds to amphibians. The most typical mammalian inhabitants are primates: the woods host no less than nine different species. The Iringa red colobus, the Sanje mangabey and Udzungwa galago occur nowhere else than here. Over 250 forest bird species, many of which are endangered or endemic, can be spotted. Keep an eye out for special treats such as the white-winged apalis, Udzungwa Forest Partridge and dappled mountain-Robin. Or just follow your ears: the silvery-cheeked hornbill, Livingstone’s turaco and crested guineafowl are hard to be missed.

Although butterflies are much easier to spot in the field, the most eye-catching ones live in the forest, such as the poisonous Pseudacraea. And out of ten different chameleon species, one, the spiny-flanked chameleon, is found only in Udzungwa and four other are endemic to Tanzania.

This chain of secluded mountains has rightfully been dubbed the African Galapagos With all these miniature marvels you’ll almost forget that there is bigger game to encounter too. Lions roam in and out from neighbouring parks. Bushbuck, bush pig, klipspringer and Harvey’s duiker and blue duiker are common sights. You might also catch a glimpse of the shy suni – a very tiny antelope –, the rare puku antelope or the larger Abbott’s duiker, found nowhere outside of Tanzania and not often seen. Very few visitors ever delve deep into this jungle, leaving one with a special feeling of solitude. With so many creatures endemic to the area, this chain of secluded mountains has rightfully been dubbed the African Galapagos.

Seven hiking trails Udzungwa is a heaven for hikers. The park offers a number of spectacular waterfalls that you can visit and has an excellent network of forest trails. A popular 5 km-hike (4-5 hours) takes you to Sanje Waterfall (170 m), of which the lowermost waterfall cascades 70 m into the forest beneath, leaving a misty spray behind.

Other trails that take you through mesmerizing scenery: • Prince Bernhard trail (1 hour) • Sonjo trail (1 km/1 hour) • Njokamoni trail (5 km/5 hours) • Campsite 3 trail (14 km/1 day) • Mt Mwanihana (38 km/3 days) • Rumemo trail (65 km/5 days) • The Udzungwa Mountains National Park was established in 1992, mainly due to it’s vegetational value. • It covers 1,990 km2 and stretches 80 km from southwest to northeast. • Height: 250 m - 2,576 m (Mt Luhomero). • The temperatures depend on season and altitude and vary greatly. • Only the miombo savannah area knows a dry (May – October) and wet season (October – May); trekking routes might get rather slippery in March – May. • Best time to visit: the dry season, but be prepared for rain anytime. • The park is accessible year round, but can be slippery in the rains. • The park is rather easily accessible by road. Dar es Salaam – town of Mikumi (315 km/4 hours) on good tarmac road, followed by 63 km (1,5 hours) to Mangu’ula main gate on a partly earth road. The western gates aren’t connected to Mangu’ula: Msosa gate lies 10 km from Mtandika and Udekwa gate lies 63 km from Ilula (on trans-national highway).

Accommodation Inside the park: several public and special campsites at Mangu’ula gate and alongside hiking paths (booking through the Park). Outside the park: Twiga hotel and rest house (booking through the Park) and several hotels at Mangu’ula and Mikumi towns.

What to do Camping safaris, guided hiking to the waterfalls and the forest, multiple-day mountain climbing, bird watching and cultural tourism to the cultural and historical sites in and outside the park. Park contacts: udzungwa@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 291 / +255 767 536 131

With its harsh and rocky landscape, d no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of "wild Africa" quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!). While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa. “

or anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are

against a dramatic topographical background. Because of its location on the rift and surrounding geological formations, Ruaha is extremely diverse, with access to several different habitat types. The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland ‘’ is rarely visited by reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachystegia trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species sable, as well as several miombospecialising birds. The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of the park’s total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without the annoyance of tse-tse known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all shapes the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined with dense vegetation, where many animals take refuge.

Birding treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds. Located in south-western Tanzania, Ruaha sprawls within and along an ancient arm of the Great Rift Valley, covering a unique transition zone where the eastern and southern

For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddlebilled storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. There are six species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent trilling is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared

Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grant’s gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dik-diks abound all over

Why visit Ruaha National Park? x Untouched, Pristine Nature: Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife has hardly been altered by human intervention. x Personalised Wildlife Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited. x Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometres of road networks. x Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger.
