AURIC AIR TRAVEL UPDATE

Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) management is now developing tourist lodges and other visitor service facilities in the Geopark to attract more tourists, both foreign and local visitors. Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Northern Tanzania is one of the famous tourist attraction sites in East Africa, where geological features have added to the value of tourist products available there, besides wildlife. These geological features have been collectively established as Ngorongoro Lengai Geopark within the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Most attractive among these geological hotspots is Mount Oldonyo Lengai – an active volcano in Tanzania.

Whilst closely monitoring and following the guidelines set by the Tanzanian authorities and WHO, Auric Air Services Limited have resumed back and increased their own vigilance, including ramping up hygiene and cleanliness standards, of their facilities and aircraft by having developed internal procedures for the safety of their employees and partners. For the confidence of passengers, they have implemented sanitizing procedures at all our check- in desks as well as at aircraft boarding points and office and aircraft disinfecting procedures whereby all our offices are being disinfected twice daily while aircraft are being disinfected after every arrival. SAFETY - The serious side of “lighter than air aviation”. Since we first s tarted o ut in 1989, we have taken care to source the best balloons from the most credible manufacturers. We work with suppliers Cameron Balloons, one of the oldest balloon manufacturers and Ultra magic, who have a long history of adventurous ballooning, to continually develop proprietary modifications that make our balloons stronger and safer.

pilot in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, wanted to fly balloons over the Serengeti. Tony Pascoe had experience of running luxury camps and a safari business in East Africa and was excited by the prospect of such a venture. It was a good match and they began working out how to make their dream a reality.

1989 – Ballooning was completely new to Tanzania, and it took five long years for Colin and Tony, together with their wives Sally and Marijka, to get all the permissions and licences in place. They finally placed an order for their first 8-passenger balloon from Cameron Balloons, the world’s leading balloon manufacturer, in the ‘acaciagreen’ and ‘savannah-gold’ of the Serengeti. 1991 – The first balloon took to the skies above the vast plains of the Serengeti. Those first years were tough as visitors to the Park were few; there was only one safari lodge and a handful of camps fed by infrequent flights to the park. It

Keeping safe & preparing to fly: 0615 - 0645hrs Your pilot takes you through the important safety briefing ahead of your flight as the sky begins to lighten and the crew inflates the balloon - an envelope of savannah gold and acacia green billowing into the cool morning, lit by the flames of the burners. You climb into the basket and prepare to lift into the dawn. Serengeti from the sky: 0645 – 0815hrs Each flight is a different journey dictated by the direction of the wind, where the sights and sounds rise from the ground to meet you. We know where we’ve started but

Serengeti - Your Experience we don’t know where we will return to earth. This is part of the adventure. Sometimes the basket will be gently brushing the tips of the grass and sometimes it will be climbing, climbing through the layers of air until you’re high enough to see the curve of the horizon, painted gold and pink by the early sun. Serengeti Balloon Safaris pilots not only have years of experience in harnessing the African wind, but are also your interpreters of the wild lives in the ebb and flow of the landscape below. Around an hour or so after you lift into the sky, the basket will return to the plains of the Serengeti. But it’s not over yet. From basket to bubbly: 0815 – 0830hrs “The Winds have welcomed you with softness. The Sun has blessed you with its warm hands….” The balloonist’s tradition is to toast the flight with sparkling wine (bubbly?). A short walk or drive from your landing spot will find you raising a

glass to your time in the skies. We then seek to take care of earthly concerns and whisk you off by safari car to our special Serengeti breakfast spot. Meeting hunger with plenty: 0830 – 0930hrs There is truly nothing to compare with breakfast served under the sweeping canopy of an acacia in the middle of the Serengeti plains. Tropical fruit, bread baked this morning and eggs cooked in the bush, all made more delicious by the location, and served on linen, bone china and Sheffield cutlery. Shoulder to shoulder with your fellow passengers, this is a time to soak in the exceptional flight you’ve just been a part of and absorb the moment. *Timings provided are a guideline only and may vary depending on conditions on the day. We aim to return every guest to their safari guide at the Seronera Visitor’s Centre at 0945hrs.

From your camp to the balloon: 0400 – 0530hrs Some things are worth getting up early for and this is certainly one of them. Rising before the birds and heading out in the silence of the pre-dawn towards the launch-site is all part of the anticipation. Perhaps one of the Serengeti’s more elusive inhabitants will be caught in the headlights on this nocturnal game drive.

ENJOY THE EASTER HOLIDAYS Ways To Celebrate the Season By Criss Samba

After Christmas, Easter is the most important holiday in most countries and Tanzania is no exception. This is one of the oldest Christian holidays. The occasion marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Outside of Christian communities, the Easter holiday is a very joyful occasion for many who celebrate with their loved ones, sharing and cherishing special moments with the ones closest to their heart.”

26

Dar Life I MARCH 2021

For those looking for ways to enjoy Easter 2021, you’ve come to the right place, whether you want a budget family holiday or simply some fun ideas for how to celebrate at home.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE:

• Light candles. • Dress up in special Easter outfits to go to church for prayer and worship. • Decorate your home with beautiful lilies. • Gather some small gifts (see below for ideas) and surprise your kids with Easter baskets. • Cook a special meal for your loved ones. Lamb is a common Easter holiday food as are hot cross buns. • Hold or participate in an Easter egg hunt or an egg-painting competition. • Have a bonfire on the evening before Easter as they do in Europe.

GIFT IDEAS FOR KIDS:

Easter is a wonderful time to give gifts to the kids in wrapped Easter baskets. For young girls, pretty earrings or bracelets or coloured egg-shaped accent lights can be good gift options. If your son or daughter is a connoisseur of crafts, you can present him or her with a window painting kit. The

kit should contain easy-to-clean brushes and easy-to-remove paint. A set of clays that could be baked in the oven can also keep the creative child totally engrossed for hours in making a beautiful pot for Easter flowers. A set of spiralling musical airplanes to hang over the crib can be a wonderful Easter gift for babies. For toddlers, jigsaw puzzles, blocks, bubbles, and stuffed animals are all great Easter gift ideas. P.S. – Hide the kids’ baskets and have them search for them for an extra-fun surprise!

GIFT IDEAS FOR ADULTS:

You may want to celebrate Easter by giving gifts to your spouse, fiancé, boyfriend or girlfriend, friends, co-workers, or neighbours. Chocolates and baked goods are very popular, as are varieties of tea, coffee, and wine. Some people may appreciate flowers, a new book, jewellery, clothing, accessories such as a scarf or handbag. You can also give away tickets to an upcoming show, concert or special event. Even adults may enjoy searching for baskets on Easter! Tanzania’s year-round temperate climate and wide range of hotels and resorts means you don’t have to go far to enjoy some time in the sun. This is particularly good news for families, making an Easter holiday much more affordable. Here are some hotels and restaurants for those looking to get away over the break.

The Easter holiday, during the Holy week, begins on Holy Thursday, followed by Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Since easter is a national holiday, many businesses are closed on these days and everyone enjoys Easter vacation.

Natural Beauty Tips for Women Over 50 Keep your skin glowing through the years By Beatrice Maro A few fine lines, a hint of gray. The normal changes of aging are inevitable. But with skin rejuvenation products, nonsurgical facial treatments, and hair care products, it’s easy for women over 50 to enhance their natural beauty.

What Happens to Skin and Hair as We Age

The effects of sun exposure, smoking, diet, and heredity become evident on our skin as we get older. Stress, gravity, and obesity also affect how well skin looks. And as we age, our skin doesn’t produce new cells as quickly as it used to. Skin gradually becomes less elastic and prone to dryness. Something similar happens to cells that give our hair its color, too. Hair pigment cells become less efficient at renewing themselves, which makes hair gray.

8 Natural Beauty Tips for Your Skin

A few simple steps are all you need to care for your skin as you get older. These natural beauty tips can get you started. * If you smoke, stop. Research shows that smoking prematurely ages your skin. * Just say no to sunbathing and tanning salons. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you must be outside, wear a protective hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses. Freckles, age spots, and blotchy complexions are linked to sun exposure. * Wear sunscreen religiously. Use products with SPF 15 or higher, and both UVB and UVA protection. Damage to the skin from excess or unprotected sun exposure is

40

Dar Life I MARCH 2021

known as “photoaging.” These changes can include fine wrinkles and an uneven skin tone. * Check skin often for skin cancer. If there are changes that worry you, call your doctor right away. Older, fairskinned people are high risk, and must have a yearly check. * Soothe dry skin. Use a humidifier. Use moisturizing soaps and lotions. See your doctor if you still have problems. * Eat right and hydrate. Good nutrition helps the body repair skin. Drinking lots of water helps hydrate skin from the inside out. * Try anti-aging products. For women over 50, over-the-counter creams and lotions may enhance natural beauty by rejuvenating your skin. Pentapeptides (a chemical compound in many new products) may help prompt skin cells to produce more collagen, which is the support structure that gives skin a firmer look. Prescription treatments and retinoid creams are also options. * Know about skin treatments. Botox injections can ease wrinkles in the upper third of the face. Chemical peels are effective in removing fine lines and smoothing skin,

especially around the eyes and mouth. Wrinkle fillers can plump up your skin and erase lines. Microdermabrasion erases ultrafine lines, rejuvenates your complexion, and improves skin tone and color. Laser resurfacing is another technique; it allows doctors to improve sun-damaged skin, scars, and other facial problems.

COMMON CAREER MISTAKES YOU MUST AVOID 4 Mistakes You Can Dodge

2)MISSING DEADLINES

You’ve probably thought about what you should do to get ahead in your career. But as it turns out, it’s just as important to consider what you should not do, too. HERE ARE FOUR COMMON PROFESSIONAL MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM: 1) NOT ASKING FOR ENOUGH MONEY

I get it. It’s hard to speak up and ask for what you’re worth. Plenty of people lowball themselves when making compensation demands, thinking it will make them seem more competitive. However, you’re doing yourself a big disservice by not asking for enough money. If you’re underpaid, you’ll only be able to keep it up for so long before you begin to get discouraged by how much energy you’re expending and how little you’re receiving in return. 68

Dar Life I MARCH 2021

As writer Douglas Adams said, “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they y by. hile this is funny and relatable, if you miss deadlines, you’re probably letting opportunities pass you by as well. Reliability is just as important as the quality of work that you do. If you’re constantly not delivering on time, then you’ll begin to get a reputation for being aky. hat’s not going to help your career advancement. To avoid this, be honest when quoting a timeline for a project. Don’t just be a yes person, especially if you don’t think you can deliver by a certain date. If you realize that you’re running late on a project, be proactive and ask for an extension before the nal hour. 3)WORKING ALL THE TIME

Many people suffer from the delusion that working more is impressive and that taking time off is a sign of weakness. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES IN THE WORKPLACE AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER. HOWEVER, REPEATEDLY MAKING THE SAME PROFESSIONAL MISTAKES WILL DECREASE YOUR HAPPINESS ON THE JOB AND YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT MANY OF THESE MISTAKES ARE EASY TO DODGE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

If you work too much, you will eventually get burned out. Your work won’t be as effective as a worker, and you won’t have a good work-life balance. For best results, make time off a priority. 4)REPEATING MISTAKES OVER AND OVER

To a certain degree, mistakes are unavoidable and inevitable. Few people reach higher career levels without making a misstep or two (or ten). This is not necessarily a bad thing... if you’re able to learn from your mistakes. If you don’t learn from your mistakes, your professional life will be like the movie Groundhog Day, where you keep repeating the same cycle over and over. How can you break free? Learn from your mistakes.

Don’t just blurt out a number. Do some quality research on appropriate compensation for salaries or fees within your eld before making a request. You deserve appropriate compensation!

HOW TO FUTURE PROOF YOUR BUSINESS 4 Proven Strategies For A Long Lasting Business By Harshal Katre part of your business. When TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) restricted the bulk SMS limit, lot of SMS marketing companies suddenly went out of business. So, to future proof your business, you must create a diversi ed product portfolio.

We can’t predict the future but we can de nitely prepare our business to face unforeseen challenges. Here is a list of 4 strategies that can help you to future proof your business. 1) DON’T DEPEND ON ONE PART OF YOUR BUSINESS FOR COMPLETE SUCCESS

Most companies achieve success with just one great product. It could be for a niche market or a mass market audience. Even if its very popular and responsible for generating almost entire chunk of the total revenue, you must think about other ways to diversify your product portfolio. This strategy might contradict with the common business advise of focusing only on one area of your business. However, in order to increase your chances for survival, you must reduce your dependence on one 70

strategies will no longer work and you might struggle to acquire new customers if your don’t adopt to new ways. 3) PREDICT THE FUTURE DEMANDS TODAY

When Henry Ford made cheap, reliable cars people said, ‘Nah, what’s wrong with a horse?’ That was a huge bet he made, and it worked. So, your customers can’t always tell you what they want, you have to anticipate it. This needs some imagination and experience with the trends of industry you work in. 4) IDENTIFY & START MANAGING RISKS

2) RETHINK YOUR PAST STRATEGIES THAT MAY FAIL TO ENGAGE NEW CUSTOMERS

I’ve read it somewhere that “What got you here, won’t take you there”. This simply means that the strategies that you used to acquire existing base of customers may not be useful to acquire new customers in future. For example, a lot of businesses depend on print advertisements to acquire customers. With the rise of social media and new avenues like ‘Search Engine Marketing’ and ‘Inbound Marketing’, things are going to change for sure. Your old

You won’t be able to predict the problems that might occur in future but you can certainly take some steps to better prepare yourself. irst, we need to nd the risks or possible point of failures for our business. These risks could be in areas like people, system or business processes, legal compliance, data security, etc. If you are depending too much on a single person, vendor or a small group of people for the success of your business, then you might face big problems in future when these people are not around.

Saadani National Park 72

Saadani is a one of a kind paradise where beach life meets wilderness. This gives you not only the opportunity to plunge into the Indian Ocean straight after your safari, but also to be submerged in a unique display of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a naturally fascinating setting. Saadani is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the Indian Ocean. Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a well-preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. Many villages are dotted around the boundaries of the park. Saadani village itself once was an important harbour-town and slave-trading centre in East Africa. Nowadays it is a small Swahili village of about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing.

Bird watchers will be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore The coastal vegetation zones range from seashore full of palm trees, through the tidal mangrove forest that form a buffer between ocean and land, to the Wami River shore where the huge sycamore fig is found. Its semi open woodlands closely resemble Selous GR, while the vast grassy area close to the tourism office is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations.

Saadani is where crab meets elephant and the roar of a lion might interrupt your tanning. All the usual suspects, such as zebra, buffalo, elephant, warthog, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbuck are present. But you also stand a high chance of capturing different types of hartebeest, the big-eyed Rondo Galago and the elusive sable antelope on camera during your jeep or walking safari. Lion, leopard and spotted hyena might be harder to find, but this makes a sighting an even greater joy.

The vast grassy area is named ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ (Small Serengeti) and lives up to the expectations Taking a boat on the Wami River will definitely add to the fun; here you are as close as one likes to get to hippo, crocodile and flamingo. Bird watchers will also be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore, such as different kinds of sandpiper, Eurasian oystercatcher and the common greenshank. On the beach you get to enjoy even more special sightings: breeding green turtles – Saadani’s beaches are one of Tanzania’s best breeding sites – with dolphins and humpback whales putting on their show in the Indian Ocean beyond. • Starting as a Game Reserve in 1962, Saadani became the 13th National Park in Tanzania in 2005. • Since the nineties several new areas have been added to the park, resulting in the Saadani ecosystem that covers 1,100 km2 (around 15 km shoreline). From south to north it stretches 69 km. • Height: the majority of the park is at sea level. Although the highest point is 350 m, most elevations don’t go beyond 40 m. • Tides: spring tides of up to 1,5 m can flow inland. • Saadani has a tropical, hot climate with an average temperature of 25-27 °C all year round (30 °C daytime, 20-24 °C night-time).

• Dry season: July – September, wet season: November – May (less rainy in December – February). • Best time to visit: June – September. • The park is accessible by road or air. • By road: 1) Dar es Salaam – Chalinze – village of Mandera (good tarmac road, 160 km/2-3 hours) then village of Mandera – Mvave Gate – Saadani National Park tourism office (rough road, 65 km/2 hours). 2) Town of Tanga – Pangani – Mkwaja Gate (earth road, 120 km/3-5 hours. 3) Dar es Salaam – Bagamoyo – Saadani • By air: several safari companies organise private flights from Dar es Salaam Zanzibar and other major Cities.

Accommodation Inside the park: one private lodge, bandas, rest house and campsites. Booking for bandas, rest house and campsites contact the Park. Outside the park: one lodge (close to the border).

What to do Game drives, boat trips, guided hiking, bird watching, sun bathing and visiting the Saadani fishing village which used to be a buzzing trading centre. Park contacts: saadani@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 346 / +255 767 536 133
