TURTLES RELEASE DAY 2020 Celebrating The 21st Annual Release of Turtles to The Sea By Paul Owere

The Minister of Information, Tourism and Heritage Hon. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo was the official guest as he released the first turtle followed by a hundreds of Turtles getting released back into the ocean. In his speech he insisted on the importance of other villages in Zanzibar to conserve turtles for the benefits of Tourism of Zanzibar.

24 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

t may come off as a surprise to you but among one of most fascinating events that happens in February, is the Turtles Release Day! Initiated by Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond, the event was exclusive for releasing big and small sea turtles from a natural pond, back to the sea. This year, the annual release was held on 20th February at Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium in Zanzibar, attended by different invitee, from within Zanzibar and abroad. The Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond is a community-based NGO established in 1993 as an effort to conserve the population of sea turtles native to Zanzibar

island. The Stone Town based Eco & Culture Tours NGO was the initiator of this project, and empowered the local villagers to take this conservation initiative into their own hands. Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) have traditionally been hunted around Zanzibar for their attractive shells, and Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) for their meat. The mission of the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond is to conserve the island’s turtle population by promoting education amongst local fishermen against deliberate capture of turtles and encouraging their safe release when accidentally captured.

The audience, too, was as diversified as the artists line up, they had travelled from as far as Australia, Norway, Greece, France, Germany, Russia, USA, Japan and other parts of the world. The massive arrivals for the festival once again confirmed that it has turned what was once a low tourist season into an intense season of booming business.

The 40 groups from across the African Continent that made the final cut showed audiences why they had been selected above the rest, exhibiting creativity and energy on stage, which have become hallmarks of the festival that is rated among the top 7 in Africa. According to festival director Yusuf Mahmoud, this year’s festival showed the world a different face of Africa that often goes unheard.

SAUTI ZA BUSARA IS ONE OF THE LARGEST MUSIC FESTIVALS IN EAST AFRICA, FEATURING VARIOUS ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD EACH YEAR. THE EVENT SHOWCASES A DIVERSE PROGRAMME OF EXCLUSIVELY AFRICAN LIVE MUSIC, PROVING A VALUABLE STAGE FOR LOCAL TALENTS. THE 2020 EDITION ROCKED THE WALLS OF STONE TOWN WITH OVER 40 SHOWS ON THREE STAGES FROM 13TH TO 16TH FEBRUARY."

He added: Here in East Africa, people love music from the region, but on the rare occasions they have access to quality music from north, south and west of the Continent, it’s clear they can love it equally. Just as we don’t have to be Italian to eat pasta, nor do we have to be Malian or Senegalese to enjoy the many different musical styles of these countries.

He further added that even with enormous challenges, they still managed to organise another successful festival with fantastic energy, great sound from start to finish and completely on time! This year’s festival ran under the theme ‘Raise your Voice, Say No to Sexual Harassment’, with several East African acts putting up a great show that wowed the audience.

“Examples include TaraJazz and Siti & the Band, from Zanzibar, or Evon and Apio Moro, from Uganda. For me, these were some of the performance highlights, up there with the uniqueness and energy levels of visiting bands from Mali, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Reunion and South Africa,” concluded the director.

JW SEAGON Does your international health insurance tick all the boxes? BY SIMON ASHWORTH

 Yes, I can choose the level of cover that’s right for me  Yes, there are options to make my cover more affordable  Yes, paying my premium and tax is easy

I

t may seem like a moot point, but the truth is, every customer is different. At JW Seagon- which is represented by Tanmanagement Insurance Brokers Ltd in Tanzania - we don’t believe the one size fits all; we trake time to understand your unique situation, consider the benefits available and recommend a solution suits you. That is one reason why we launched JWS Worldwide Health Plan, an international health insurance policy available exclusively through JW Seagon and developed in partnership with Hollard Cigna Health. Whether you want health insurance for you and your family, or a company plan that meets the needs of your workforce, the flexibility of JWS Worldwide Health Plan allows you to select cover that is right for you and most importantly, your budget. Whilst satisfying your health needs should always be your main priority when considering health insurance, a policy you choose also has to work for you financially. In order to tailor the cover that’s right for you and your budget,

40 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

JWS Worldwide Health Plan includes: • 5 levels of cover -from an inpatient-only plan to a top of the range comprehensive plan, as well as supplementary dental options; • the option to be treated anywhere in the world, anywhere in the world excluding the USA, or anywhere in Africa & India only; • a wide range of deductibles. Another(and increasingly prominent)box that needs to be ticked is the regulatory compliance. In recent years the regulatory position in Tanzania has become even more challenging with regard to health insurance. As a result, a number of international health insurers have withdrawn from the market, or their regulatory position has become uncertain. Most people consider their health a top priority so any uncertainty or doubt around health insurance should be avoided. Reassuringly JWS Worldwide Health Plan is fully compliant with Tanzanian regulation and means: • there are no issues paying

AS THE HEAD OF HEALTHCARE AT JW SEAGON, I’M OFTEN ASKED ‘WHAT MAKES A GOOD INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE PLAN?’ BUT AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING LIKE A BELEAGUERED POLITICIAN, I ALWAYS RESPOND IN THE SAME WAY – BY SUGGESTING THAT A BETTER QUESTION IS TO ASK ‘WHAT IS THE RIGHT HEALTHCARE PLAN FOR ME?’ premiums overseas (premiums are paid locally); • you are NOT liable for withholding and filing Withholding Tax because Resolution withholds the tax when remitting the premium to Hollard Cigna Health and pays the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) directly. Does your current health insurance tick all the boxes? If not, or you’d like some help in making an assessment, then it is time to give JW Seagon a call; we will be delighted to discuss how JWS Worldwide Health Plan can be shaped around you, your family, your business and your budget.

OPTING FOR AN ENTREPRENEURSHIP CAREER Why It Is the Best Long-Term Career Option By Asia Bonanga

et’s unravel together why entrepreneurship is the best long-term career!

1. It’s a Personal Management Thing Sometimes, it is best to walk alone, rather than in a group, because having a group comes with misunderstandings, unbalanced teamwork and lack of solidarity, but as a single person, one is free to decide on his/her ideas, committing to one thing for the long run, working effectively to achieve the intended goal and carrying out management skills such as planning, delegation, problem solving and communication that will guide him/her into making his/her career a long term one. 2. It Is Limitless There is no such thing as age retirement. The good part, is you can start at an early age working as an entrepreneur and even at the age of eighty, you will still be kicking, compared to short term careers such as being employed, which gives you only a minimum time. Therefore, the pressure of whether you are getting old and will soon be out of the 52 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

office that you’ve been working for about twenty years, can be removed by one single choice of being an invested entrepreneur. 3. It Adopts to the Change of the Environment A self employed person has the benefits to move with the change of time, let’s say it’s a season of mangoes, you will then sell mangoes and if it’s the season of pineapples, you will then sell pineapples. An entrepreneur has the advantage to deal with these changes according to his/her preferences compared to an employed person who has to stick to one thing only and has the risks of whether he/she will be fired or get a salary decrease. An entrepreneur and an employed person both share one thing - skills, at the end of the day, it is your choice to see where you fit in the most and walk towards that path. “STUDY FOR AN HOUR A DAY. DOUBLE YOUR LEARNING AND YOU WILL TRIPLE YOUR SUCCESS” - ROBIN SHARMA.

“WE HAVE GROWN UP BELIEVING THAT GETTING A JOB IS ACHIEVING ONE’S CAREER, BUT TELL YOU WHAT! ENTREPRENEURSHIP PLAYS A MUCH GREATER ROLE THAN ANYTHING ELSE! WITH ENTREPRENEURSHIP, YOU ARE REST ASSURED TO HAVE A LONG LASTING CAREER”

FOCUS ARTIST OF THE MONTH :

By George Rodgers

anzania is rich with artists of all caliber ranging from those tingatinga artists we’re all come acquainted to, to those more mainstream. They all represent a Tanzania from their individual views, backgrounds and beliefs. Dar Life caught up with the newly emerging artist Foibe who is taking a more active and vocal approach to showing her work.

Name: Foibe Makundi Profession: Visual Artist Born: 1974 I was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1974. My parents are both from the Marangu, Moshi region in Kilimanjaro. In 1987, my family relocated to Geneva, Switzerland. My interest in Art started in 2nd grade. At 18, I moved to the USA to pursue further studies in the Arts. In 1997, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Arts and in Art History from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I lived and practiced in the Washington, DC until 2009, when I returned back to Tanzania. I now live in Dar-es-Salaam and teach at Ardhi University. I am currently painting a serie on the of "Waswahili: Watu wa Pwani", part of continuous studies of East African people and Cultures. DL - What inspired you to start painting? Foibe - Wanting to get accurate depiction of people, kijiji, mlima. My older sister was good at drawings people. I asked her to help me... class mates found out, in proving them wrong, that it was I who did the work. Redrew the image...and again and again... realizing its getting better...then started drawings more and more... I think we started Sanaa period on 2rd grade, which became one of my favorite classes. In 1987, my family moved to 62 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

Geneva, Switzerland, where I began to receive a formal training in Fine Arts, along with the other Science and Math and Language courses. DL - How long have you been an artist? Foibe - 29 years. DL - When did you start? Foibe - 2nd grade in Chang'ombe primary school (8yrs old in 1982). DL - What is your genre of painting and what mediums do you like to use? Foibe - Life Drawings (Figurative/Portraiture, Still Life and Landscape). DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? Foibe - First Exhibit - Group Exhibit- Student's Work while in High School, International School of Geneva, Switzerland ... probably 1991 or 1992, First Solo Exhibit - Christensen Center Art Gallery, Augsburg College, Minneapolis, MN, USA – 1997.

MARCH 2019 Dar Life I 63

DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Foibe - I use all means – My favorite is drawing and painting from a model. However, many of my recent work were photographs that I modified in photoshop until I captured the lighting and the tones. Then painted the new images. DL - What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Foibe - Day to day activities that are part of our culture. The tangible unity I experience among the extended family, friends and colleagues. Regardless of your personal issues and responsibilities, there are routines imbedded in the culture that you just know you have go thru because its the right thing to do, the thing that is expected of you. For example, birth, wedding or death... of anyone you know... or are distantly related to... the emotional and financial support that one can expect during this time. DL - Where do you feel art is going? Foibe - I think art is finally evolving in Tanzania. I have faith we are finally waking up from a deep sleep and starting to explore more medias and local subjects. DL - What is the role of the artist in society? Foibe - Reflection of the Cultures and the Society. 64 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

History keeper. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Foibe - Telling the world an uncommon view of the people of East Africa. Subjects that are yet to be mainstream, but are yet oh so part of our lives. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Foibe - Oil painting- textured brush strokes. I feel that both, the subject and the execution, are equally important. You may have a very important subject, but if the execution is done poorly, or inappropriately, then the message may not reach the target. DL - Do you prefer a perfect smooth technique or a more energetic expressive technique and why? A more energetic /expressive technique Foibe - I think it makes a painting, a canvas come alive. DL - Why is your work so pretty! What do you think makes it stand out? Foibe - Both the Subject and the painting technique. The technique - I usually stop when I feel a piece is done, even if the painting is not finished. I use the subject that I feel comfortable expressing an opinion on and also common subjects that many people can relate to. To purchase any of my painting and other exhibition queries please E: foibe@aol.com.

DL - Where do you do your work? Foibe - In my house. My Dining Room is my Art Studio.

hen this condition reaches severe levels and all conservative management have failed such as analgesic medications, rubbing of analgesic and antiinflammatory gel, Intra-articular steroid injections in knee joint , unloading knee braces and physiotherapy, then the only treatment which can help the patient at this stage is a Total Knee Replacement. For example, when a patient has osteoarthritis in just one compartment, then the orthopedic surgeon could choose to replace the entire knee joint or to resurface just the affected compartment which is known as Unicompartment Knee Replacement.

Recent studies show good longterm survival of Unicompartmental knee replacement in comparison to High tibial osteotomy (One of the options to manage OA knee in young patients Less than 55 Years similar to Unicompartmental knee replacement).

Unicompartmental knee replacement /resurfacing (UKR) or bi-unicompartmental knee resurfacing, Gender knee, Navigation assisted TKR, Robotic assisted knee replacement are some of the new trends in operative treatment of osteoarthritis knee joints. These procedures aim to restore a pain-free, fully functional and durable knee joint with fast recovery, shorter hospital stay, smaller incisions, less blood loss, faster and less painful rehabilitation, lower risk of infection, less chances of joint stiffness, less risk of venous thromboembolism and easier revision surgery if required later. Early functional outcome is good with these procedures particularly with CAS and Robotics but longterm survival in comparison to conventional total knee replacement is yet to be established. Total knee replacement has a finite survival rate, dependent mainly upon the implant alignment, positioning of implant, balancing of knee joint and post-operative activity level of the recipient.

“Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is a degenerative joint disease, when articular cartilage gets worn off gradually due to wear and tear of the joint, especially after you turn 45 years. It makes the joint painful while bending and straightening. Gradually disease keeps on progressing and deformity is also noticed later in course of disease which alters the axis of weight bearing. It becomes very difficult to walk on a deformed joint. “

A

lovely unspoiled paradise and a scenic gem located 125 km west of Arusha town on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti in the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania, nestling by the wall of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is one of the oldest and most popular sanctuaries in East Africa. The park has a large variety of habitats, making it possible to support a wealth of wildlife in its small area. The main habitats include the shallow soda lake itself which occupies 77% of the National Park total area of 330 sq. km, the groundwater forest, open grassland, acacia woodland and the rift wall. Manyara’s dramatic setting was once extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest that I had seen in Africa” and by documentary maker Colin Willock as “the most luxuriant place in the whole East African Rift”, after visiting the scenic gem Lake Manyara, which is stretching for 50 km along the base of the rusty-gold 600 metre high Rift Valley escarpment. Maybe the short, but full of animals and birdlife,

78 I Dar Life I MARCH 2020

game viewing circuits of Lake Manyara could be described as an introduction of what to expect from your wildlife adventure in Tanzania. THIS NATIONAL PARK IS EXCEPTIONAL BECAUSE OF ITS INCREDIBLE RIFT VALLEY, THE TREE CLIMBING LIONS, BABOONS, BLUE MONKEY, THE DARK COLOURED GIRAFFES, BUSH PLAINS, BAOBAB STREWN CLIFFS AND ALGAE-STREAKED HOT SPRINGS OFFER INCREDIBLE ECOLOGICAL VARIETY IN A SMALL AREA, RICH IN WILDLIFE AND INCREDIBLE NUMBERS OF BIRDS.

THE WILDLIFE Upon entering the Lake Manyara National Park visitors are greeted by a groundwater forest which boasts ancient mahogany trees, giant fig trees as well as kapok trees. It is a common site to see the crystalclear water seeping directly out of the ground. This area is always lush green and is also home to the olive baboons who proudly call Manyara their home. Troops of up to 150 individuals joyfully playing and foraging around in the forest can be seen. Your game viewing here will

take you through nature at altitudes between 900 and 1800 meters above sea level. Contrasting with the intimacy of the forest is the grassy floodplain and its expansive views eastward, across the alkaline lake, to the jagged blue volcanic peaks that rise from the endless Maasai Steppes. Large buffalo, wildebeest and zebra herds congregate on these grassy plains, as do giraffes – some so dark in coloration that they appear to be black from a distance. Inland of the floodplain, a narrow belt of acacia woodland hidden in the park are famous for the renowned “tree climbing lions”. These large cats have evolved over generations to add tree climbing to their daily activity. Acacia woodland is also the favoured habitat of Manyara’s elephants, which are unusually relaxed and often carry impressive tusks. Squadrons of banded mongoose dart between the acacias, while the small cute Kirk’s dik-dik hides in their shades. Pairs of klipspringers are often seen silhouetted on the rocks above a field of searing hot springs that steams

and bubbles next to the lakeshore in the far south of the park. A must stop is the new hippo viewing deck from which visitors can gaze upon these large mammals going about their business. Water birds like blacksmith plovers, little egrets and herons are just a few of the many birds to be seen here. ATTRACTION & ACTIVITIES • Bird watching: There are more than 500 species of birds that fly here and there. The most attractive are pink flamingos that migrate several times from Lake Natron to Lake Manyara and vice versa. Some other species include the yellow-billed storks, marabou storks, goose, turkey, weavers, pelicans, and other hundreds of species. • Treetop Walkway: Allows you to have a thrilling sky-high adventure straight through the forest. This 370 m airwalk, lets you to walk right among the treetops, giving you a bird’s eye view of the forest. • Tree-Climbing Lions: The lions of Lake Manyara National Park are a rarity among their

own kind, being some of the only lions in the world to regularly climb trees and use them as places as rest. • Flamingos: Lake Manyara is home to thousands of flamingos drawn by the microscopic algae that they feed on. The flamingos’ specialized diet means they are confined to the alkaline lakes of the Rift Valley, and Lake Manyara is arguably the best place in Tanzania to see these huge flocks of brightly coloured birds. • Maji Moto Springs: A natural spring surrounded by palm and fig trees - an isolated paradise of crystal-clear waters, sun-dappled shady picnic spots, and unmatched beauty. Not so much a hot spring as it is a warm spring, Maji Moto is a perfect place for a swim and a picnic lunch. • Cultural Tours: Located not far from the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park, Mto Wa Mbu is a local farming and market village that is perfectly situated for souvenir shopping or for a glimpse into the day to day life of the Tanzanian people.

• Camping: Camping at Lake Manyara can be done at various camping sites, the park has got a total of five campsites and of which three are private while the two are public, visitors who would like to engage in this activity are advised to carry their camping gear. • Hippo pool view point: The Hippo Pool located in the Simba River, not only attracts these 3000kg animals, but many of the park's nearly 400 species of birds, including the predatory fish eagle, which lives in and around the Hippo Pool. • Game viewing: Day game drives: Apart from the glorious scenic views, the park is endowed with animals such as; the famous tree climbing lions only found in this park in Tanzania, giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, Kiplinger’s, baboons and many more. Night game drives can also be carried out with an armed tourist ranger, those who would love to engage in the night game drives should always book in advance. • Walking safaris: Walking tours in the park encompasses

• Canoeing: A conning safari will let you witness some of the outstanding views of Lake Manyara shore seamlessly floating over the alkaline water of the lake. The incredible array of birdlife, few roaming elephants and other grazers on the shore line and the absolutely stunning pink flamingos are waiting for you that you can enjoy in the canoeing safari. • Picnics: The park has three well established picnic sites with well kept bathrooms and toilets, you can enjoy your day tour from one of the picnic sites accompanied with a packed lunch box, this site has sitting arrangements in form of dinings and also provides excellent views of nature and wildlife.

WHERE TO STAY Accommodation at Lake Manyara national park varies from camping to luxurious lodges which are exclusive comfortable and provide mouthwatering meals, where to stay will depend on tourist’s choice and budget. Our recommendation are as follow;

Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp: lies along the mighty Rift Valley Escarpment over the river basin overlooking the lake itself. Out accommodations and infinity swimming pool are built right at the edge of the escarpment and provide unparalleled views of the region. Lake Manyara Serena Lodge: This is a large complex with a good setting on the escarpment overlooking the Rift Valley. The grounds offer a panoramic view over the forest and lake, with the Rift valley hills fading to the horizon.
