38th Annual Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair One stop centre for reaching countries

T

he Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) has established itself over the years as a one-stop shop for Tanzanian products as well as goods from across East, Central and Southern Africa. Supported by the services of the Dar es Salaam harbour, the fair acts as a hub for bringing together countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana. DITF, which is popularly known as the “Saba Saba” Fair, marks its 38th year and will run from 28th June to 8th July 2014. It is a major promotional event organised by the Board of External Trade (BET) to spearhead Tanzania’s business endeavours. The first trade fair was held in 1963. It was organised by a British expert named Mr. Lucas in the Ministry of Trade and Cooperative Unions, with the assistance of Mr. Mashamba, who was an official of the Ministry. The Trade Fair Grounds, which are also known as Mwalimu J.K.Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds, were inaugurated in 1962 – one year after Tanzania gained her independence on 9th December 1961. The grounds at that time were under the Ministry of Trade and Cooperative Unions and the fair was known as the National Agricultural and Trade Fair (NATF). 22 I Dar Life I July 2014

The BET of Tanzania was committed to establishing global business partnerships by organising and managing international and specialised trade fairs, solo exhibitions, product and market research, prospect development, trade missions, buyer-seller meetings and contact marketing programmes. BET gives out regular trade information and offers consultancy services to producers, exporters and importers to enable them to effectively participate in the global market place. This year, exhibitors are selling a wide range of products – food and beverages, textiles, garments and yarns, manufactured products, information and communication technology, construction materials, automobiles, electrical goods and appliances, farm implements, chemicals and cosmetics, timber and furniture, trade services, engineering products, machinery, computer software, gifts and handicrafts. The fair enjoys support of the Tanzanian government through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing. The fair is also supported by the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (TCCIA) and the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) as well as other institutions in the country.

Not only do they have the infrastructure and skills to look after such an iconic brand but they are already vastly experienced when it comes to selling and supporting vehicles in the Tanzanian market,” commented Nigel Clarke, Operations Director of Jaguar Land Rover Sub-Saharan Africa. CMC Automobiles has represented Land Rover for six decades in Tanzania, turning it into one of the country’s most successful brands. In addition to their landmark headquarters on Maktaba Road in Dar es Salaam’s city centre, CMC owns a further five outlets across the country and has two more appointed service outlets. These outlets will be equipped to provide aftersales support to Jaguar owners if needed. “We are honoured to have been appointed by JLR SSA to look after Jaguar, and we believe it is a brand which has a very bright future in

our country. Our track record in the industry is well-proven and with our extensive knowledge of Land Rover, we are well-placed to add Jaguar to our stable. We intend to raise its profile to a high level as rapidly as possible ,” says Antony Haji, Managing Director of CMC Automobiles. CMC has also invested in additional equipment (including the latest electronic diagnostic tools), parts, staff and facilities to cope with the arrival of Jaguar. Other developments include an approved aluminium body repair facility which will open later this year and be capable of repairing the latest-generation products. CMC Automobiles Tanzania currently employs approximately 100 people. An XF and a long wheelbase XJ (both powered by the 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel, which is tried and tested in the Land Rover Discovery) are already selling in Dar es Salaam. July 2014 I Dar Life I 27

Celebrating World Music Day Malian Guitarist Habib Koité Inspires Tanzanians

W

By Wema Kajo

orld Music Day is celebrated annually around the world in different forms. Generally, it’s a day to take stock of how music has impacted lives and fostered a sense of unity amongst people. In Tanzania, annual celebrations for the day are held at Alliance Francaise in Dar es Salaam. As Alliance Francaise’s Director, Sullivan Benetier, reminded Dar Life, World Music Day was launched on June 21, 1982 as part of an initiative by Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture at the time. It began its expansion in 1985 with the European year of music. Less than 15 years later, the event is widely celebrated on five continents. “More than 450 cities in 116 countries worldwide celebrated World Music Day last year. It must be remembered that this free and July 2014 I Dar Life I 37

popular event promotes both amateur and professional live music of all practices and musical styles,” Benetier said. This year’s festivities kicked off with a lateafternoon street show by the Police Brass Band that snaked its way through the streets of Dar es Salaam’s Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke districts. Benetier explained that the purpose of the street show was to communicate and invite the masses to the yearly event on their premises that evening. “The show itself was headed by one of Africa’s most popular musicians, Malian guitarist Habib Koité, also known as “the modern griot”. Koite officially opened the show after great performances by home-grown and trained artistes, including the DCMA Young Stars from Zanzibar, the traditional Cocodo African Music Band, and Malfred’s dancehall reggae performance. “

Koité, who composes and arranges all his own songs, employs a primarily vocal style. Benetier added that Koité’s voice can be described as intimate and relaxed, which emphasizes a calm, moody singing, rather than operatic technical prowess. Koité sings in English, French, and the Malian Bambara dialect. 38 I Dar Life I July 2014

Director Benetier pointed out that Koité is known primarily for his unique approach to playing the guitar by tuning it on a pentatonic scale and playing on open strings, as one would on a kamale n’goni. Other pieces of Koité’s music sound more like the blues from the United States of America or the Spanish flamenco, which are both styles that the renowned musician learned under Khalilou Traore, another musical maestro.

Tanzania Farmers’ A Highlighting Local Resources & Talents

T

anzania Farmers’ Market is an initiative created by Hopeful Futures Foundation (HFF) to give back to the community by supporting the agriculture sector in Tanzania. The Farmers’ Market provides a platform for local farmers to be able to extend their supply chain network, and for the public to see what 46 I Dar Life I July 2014

By Anike Lewal great bounty Tanzania has to offer. In setting up this market we discovered a wealth of culture and talent in Tanzania, and as a result on Saturday June 14th we decided to merge the two and created Tanzania Farmers’ Arts & Crafts Market, which now also supports local artist, sculptors, painters and the culture industry.

“The event gives farmers, suppliers and artist from all sectors a free platform to sell their creative products in a market environment such as homemade sauces, condiments, freshly grown fruits and vegetables, customized T-shirts, and handmade crafts. The market creates a social space which is engaging, dynamic and fun for people

of all ages. It brings the community together in a festive and eclectic environment. “ The market included series of mini workshops in arts and crafts and various cooking demonstrations. HFF plans to expand future markets to include workshops in batik and dying, in addition to weaving.

HFF also intends to launch Tanzania Farmers’ Arts & Craft Market in five major cities in Tanzania by end of 2015 – Morogoro, Iringa, Moshi, Mwanza, and Mbeya, in addition to continuing the Dar es Salaam market, which has been established since last year. As the holy month of Ramadan is approaching,

HFF will not be holding a market in July but instead will use the time to prepare for their annual event World Food Day – save the date for Saturday October 18th! HFF invites all individuals to come support the local economy and experience the wealth of products Tanzania has to offer at Tanzania Farmers’ Arts & Crafts Markets in the future. CAREER

Oh No! Not Another Meeting! How To Get Things Done

W

e’ve all had that reaction at one time or another when someone suggests there should be a meeting to resolve a problem, make a plan, or update each other on our progress. Often, it seems that the same topics are discussed over and over, but even though everybody has good ideas, the issues never get resolved. “Meetings can be an effective way to solve problems, or just a frustrating waste of time. The difference is in how the meeting is run. There are five elements needed for a successful business meeting: an agenda, an agreed-upon format, a chairperson, a scribe, and a system of accountability.” The meeting agenda should be prepared and distributed in advance, so everyone knows what will be discussed. The chairperson typically prepares the agenda, based on input from the other participants. It is the chair’s task to balance what everyone wants to include

50 I Dar Life I July 2014

with the reality of what can be discussed in the time available. If you disagree over what should be on the agenda, call for a vote before proceeding. Every meeting should have a fixed ending time. It’s a law of the universe that work will expand to fill the time available. An open-ended meeting will run until everyone gets exhausted or there are too few people remaining to make any decisions. Agree on the format for the meeting before you begin. Will everyone be asked to speak in turn, or will there be open discussion? How much time will be allotted for each topic? Will decisions be made by the most senior person present, or by the group at large? How will the group make its decisions? Must agreement be unanimous, or will a majority vote suffice? Accountability means that a person or group is assigned to do something specific by a certain date. “Jane will get quotes for leasing a photocopy machine and report back at the next meeting,” is a statement

of accountability. A common mistake is to decide on a task without assigning who will do it or by when. Another is to make the task too vague, e.g. “Jane will investigate our copying options.” The chair must make sure each decision has accountability assigned before moving on. When you are meeting to solve a problem, make sure everyone first agrees on what the problem really is. “We need a copier,” is actually a solution rather than a problem. The underlying problem might be “We are spending too much time running out for copies.” The solution might be getting a copier, but it could also be organizing work better, or designating someone to have all needed copies made once per day. Not every issue can be resolved the first time it comes up, but it can be moved along. Make it a standing rule that some action must be taken about every item on your meeting agenda before the meeting concludes.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH Focus on: Zanzibar Art

y name is Yahya Mzee . I was born in Zanzibar on 11th October 1986. My vision is to learn more about art and to teach others. Sometimes I face many challenges in my work and in my life, but I always say nothing can stop me from being an artist. I completed my

“ART IS CONCEPTION” From tingatinga artists to more contemporary painters, sculptors, photographers and filmmakers, Tanzania is not lacking in artistic skill and variety. While some Tanzanian artists have managed to establish themselves, many more hustle on a daily basis to be recognized for their unique talent. secondary education in 2005 at Mwanakerekwe Secondary school, than I went to the school in Zanzibar at Nyumba ya Sanaa for two months and relocated to Stone Town. Fortunately God blessed me to continue studying ‘A’ level education at Lumumba

S. School. At that time I was running between school and art classes in Hurumzi (Zayaa Gallery) for one year under my teacher, Omar Sleiman Kiwenge. I’m a successful visual artist. Dar Life - What inspired you to start painting July 2014 I Dar Life I 55

Sometimes when I wake up I sketch my dreams, an idea passed on to me by my teacher, Omar Sleiman Kiwenge.

Y. Kola: The only thing that inspired me to start painting is love and imagination. DL - How long have you been an artist? Y. Kola: For about ten years. DL - When did you start? Y. Kola: 2005 at house of art in Zanzibar (Nyumba ya Sanaa) DL - Tell us about your first exhibition? When was it? Y. Kola: My first exhibition was called Islamic painting and was shown at the 56 I Dar Life I July 2014

ZEIFF(Zenj Islamic Film Festival) in 2010 inside the House of Wonders in Stone Town. DL - Where do you do your work? Y. Kola: Usually in the Old Fort gallery, but sometimes at home. DL - Do you work from life, or from photographs or from imagination? Y. Kola: Always from life. Most of time I do live sketching to make a unique photo or drawing.

DL - Where do you feel art is going? Y. Kola: Art in Tanzania can only go up. The network of artists is growing, and more shared spaces and opportunities are becoming available for art, including Nafasi Art Space and Vipaji Foundation. DL - What is the place of your work in society? Y. Kola: If I can inspire even one individual to be a better person, I will have been successful. DL - What technique do you use? Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? Y. Kola: I use oil paintingand textured brush strokes. I feel that both the subject and the execution are equally important. You may have a very important subject, but if the execution is done poorly, or inappropriately, then the message may not reach the target. Effective Time Management Tips for Making the Most of Your Day any people go through life satisfied with status quo, stomping ants, handling the routine, not reaching their God-given potential. Others make Hippos fly, reaching their potential, accomplishing something major. Which type of person do you want to be?The two major components of time management are practice and purpose. The practice component refers to what you do with the minutes of your day. The purpose component refers to finding and knowing your purpose in life. When you manage your time, the minutes of your life, and it falls in alignment with your purpose of your life, you have a fantastic chain reaction. This alignment can enable you to accomplish your tasks more effectively, to reach your goals more quickly, and to give you a greater sense of peace. God gave each of us a brain and a soul, but many of us don’t make time to exercise it. I begin each day with a cup of coffee on my front porch. I watch the sun rise, pray, and ask God for direction for this day. I think about my goals and 58 I Dar Life I July 2014

projects, and I listen for new ideas. I then head off to my office to begin work. Every person must make time to think. Schedule an appointment with yourself, close yourself off, and don’t allow interruptions. You will be amazed how clear your life’s purpose as well as the quality of your life will become. The best way to accomplish a major goal is to break it down into smaller pieces. The old saying, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” The same is true with major goals. For example, when I wrote my first book, I broke the writing down into smaller pieces. I got up an hour early each day and wrote approximately 250 words. At the end of the week, I had completed a chapter. At the end of the month, I had completed four chapters. I continued on until I completed the book. This process can be applied to almost any major undertaking. Focusing on the smaller parts makes any task much easier and keeps motivation high. When you reach goals, reward yourself!

Game Ranger in Your Backpack

This guide is packed with practical, interpretative information on the most commonly encountered animals and plants of the Lowveld - information that is usually only available if you have a game ranger or field guide by your side in the bush! It teaches people how to observe, identify and interpret what they see in the bush in a meaningful way, without having to wade through the reams of technical information found in most other field guides. The reader-friendly mind-map layout of the book, with pictures linked to brief but informative text boxes, Hundreds of stunning interpretative images, highlighted keywords and a flowchart structure to each spread direct the eye to the different topics on each featured species, allowing the reader to pick out whatever is of interest to him or her. Game Ranger in Your Backpack is an essential companion for amateur naturalists of all descriptions including first-time international visitors to South Africa’s bushveld, annual local holidaymakers or aspiring ‘game rangers’.

The Fortunes of Africa - by Martin Meredith

A sweeping, provocative and very timely new history of Africa seen through the context of wealth. Africa has been coveted for its riches ever since the era of the Pharoahs. In past centuries, it was the lure of gold, ivory and slaves that drew fortune-seekers, merchant-adventurers and conquerors from afar. In modern times, the focus of attention is on oil, diamonds and other valuable minerals. Land is another prize. In modern times, foreign corporations have acquired huge tracts of land to secure food supplies needed abroad, just as the Romans did. With compelling narrative, Martin Meredith traces the rise and fall of ancient kingdoms and empires; the spread of Christianity and Islam; the enduring quest for gold and other riches; the exploits of explorers and missionaries; and the impact of European colonisation. He examines too the fate of modern African states and concludes with a glimpse of their future.

A young man returns to Nigeria after fifteen years in New York. Like him, the country of his childhood has grown up quickly: from fast-food restaurants, email cafés, and contempt for authority to the all-consuming draw of ‘money for nothing’. From the consulate in Manhattan to the dusty streets of Lagos, life in modern Nigeria runs like clockwork - as long as you pay the fee. Petrol pumps are rigged to overcharge and internet cafés overflow with career scammers (‘Dear friend...’), but the police are too busy doling out bogus fines to care. As our narrator makes the difficult journey back to his family house and its memories, he is confronted by the paradox of a country he wants to love, as burdened by its impoverished past as it is blinded by the spoils of the future. Every Day is for the Thief - now published for the first time outside Nigeria - is a candid tale of political and spiritual corruption, and a moving account of what it means to go home. 66 I Dar Life I July 2014

Selous Game Reserve Dazzles Journalists South Africans Impressed by Tanzania’s Offerings By Geofrey Tengeneza-Selous

The journalists were fortunate to witness lions and elephants and disclosed that for most of them, it was their first time seeing these animals in their natural habitat. The media practitioners also paid a visit to the grave of Captain F.C Selous, 74 I Dar Life I July 2014

an Englishman who lived in the area decades ago and was killed by Germans in the First World War. The journalists then enjoyed an evening boat cruise along Rufiji River. The tour was arranged by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) and supported by Serena Hotel and Fastjet. The press trip for the journalists is organized by the Tanzania Tourist Board to promote Tanzanian tourist attractions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other countries.

Africa as an elite tourism destination with exhibitors from Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and attracting delegates from as far as the USA, UK, Europe and China!” The stage has been set for the coming years and it is expected that the show will grow in stature attracting more regional and international attention. aribu Fair, owned by the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) promised to be bigger and better in 2014, starting with its rebranding as Karibu Travel Market Tanzania (TMT). TMT was held at the expansive Heron Recreation Centre grounds near Arusha airport from 6th-8th June 2014.

tour operators, to participate. The show is currently dominated by lodge and camp owners, industry service providers, and safari vehicle manufacturers in the safari vehicle conversion business. TATO is also actively working to facilitate the offering of discounted airfares and FAM trips to encourage more foreign tour operators and agents to participate next year. The opening day was set aside for the trade only and serious business was reported by many exhibitors. The day ended with a spectacular fireworks display and a world-class Karibu Corporate Cocktail party. “The theme of the show was ‘Sustainable Conservation’ which included a full programme of talks and events, with Dr. Paula Kahumbu of Wildlife Direct as the main guest conservationist speaker; not to forget the launch of the TATO anti-poaching song ‘Action Not Extinction’, which was listened to with all the attention it deserved and an encore had to be sung.” Mrisho Mpoto and his troupe sang his hit song ‘Deni La Hisani’ or a Debt of Courtesy and he made a call to end poaching in Tanzania. Book early for next year!!! 80 I Dar Life I July 2014

RECEPE CORNER

CHICKEN CAJUN- STYLE By Rukiya Abbbas

1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp cayenne pepper ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp oil

Methods • Wash the chicken wings and pat dry with absorbent paper towels. Remove the wing tips with kitchen scissors. • Mix together the Paprika, coriander, celery salt, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, oil and red wine vinegar. • Rub this mixture over the wings to coat evenly and set aside, in the refrigerator, COOK’S TIPS To save time, you can buy ready-made Cajun spices seasoning to rub over the chicken wings.

102 I Dar Life I July 2014

2 tbsp red wine vinegar Fresh parsley, to garnish Cherry tomatoes and mixed salad leaves, to serve

for at least one hour to allow the flavours to permeate the chicken. Cook the chicken wings on a preheated barbecue (grill), occasionally brushing with oil, for about 15 minutes, turning often until cooked through. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with cherry tomatoes, mixed salad leaves and a sauce of your choice.

VARIATION Although chicken wings do not have much meat on them, they are small and easy to pick up with your fingers which make them ideal for barbecues (grills). However they can also be enjoyed fried or roasted.
