SAUTI ZA BUSARA FESTIVAL 2021

Excitement and anticipation are rising for East Africa’s favorite music festival, Sauti za Busara. The festival is gearing up for its 18thannual event, celebrating music from across Africa in Stone Town, Zanzibar, from 12th–13thFebruary 2021. The globally acclaimed extravaganza takes place at the Old Fort and Forodhani Gardens, hosting 14 exhilarating music performances on main stages, on two nights in February. In addition to music live shows, the festival includes several other activities both in Stone Town and in other locations in Zanzibar; the most popular of them being workshops and a carnival parade in the streets of Stone Town. The festival also provides networking opportunities for African artists and music professionals, creates employment for locals, and draws in business for tourism, which is the top income generator on the island. THE KILIMANJARO MARATHON 2021

The 2021 event marks the 19th year and, this year, Kilimanjaro Marathon expects over 10,000 plus runners in the various events, with approximately 20,000 spectators on route and in the stadium. This year’s event will be held at the Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU), on Sunday 28th February 2021, from 6am and will comprise the races of 42 km, 21 km, and the 5km fun run. There is already a lot of buzz all over as the online registration continues, with this year looking promising in terms of numbers following the growing popularity of the event. Olduvai Gorge is a key tourist site where visitors can learn about human e olu on and prehistory. The site and new museum a ract local and interna onal tourists to visit and experience what it may have felt like to li e as the earliest man did. An interna onal team of archaeologists and paleoanthropologists has disco ered a large collec on of two million years old stone tools, fossilized bones, and plant materials at the Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania. Newly-discovered stone reveals that the earliest humans used diverse, rapidly-changing environments in Africa to run early life on arth. a ng as far back as . million years ago, the newly-discovered tools were likely manufactured by the early humans. he lodge is set right on the beach, and has a private waterhole. The lodge has an infinity swimming pool which overlooks the ocean and is easily accessible from all suites. The power of love is something we should celebrate every day, but Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to be reminded of how special the people we love truly are. Get movin

Men who engage in moderate exercise routines (about 1 hour of exercise, 3 times per week) have been found to have better sperm results than men who do not exercise or exercise less than that amount per week (Vaamond et al. 2009). Regular exercise in moderation helps keep body weight at normal levels and relieves stress and anxiety, both of which contribute to proper production of testosterone and healthy sperm. Aim for about one hour of moderately intense cardiovascular exercise three to four times a week.

Conversely, men with very heavy exercise schedules generally have less healthy sperm (Vaamond et al. 2009). Perhaps surprisingly, intense exercise with little rest between extreme workouts may result in cellular damage, which can impair both the quality and quantity of

sperm. While it only takes one sperm to get pregnant, sperm must be strong and healthy to travel and penetrate the female egg. To allow KPŃ&#x153;LYLU[ WHY[Z VM `V\Y IVK` [V YLZ[ HUK YLZ[VYL themselves, alternate between endurance ^VYRV\[Z Z[YLUN[O [YHPUPUN HUK Ă&#x2026;L_PIPSP[` exercises. Make sure to allow about 2 days of rest between strength training sessions in particular.

Get loose

Mentally, set aside time to relax and release stress. Do what works for you, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meditation, prayer, deep abdominal breathing, or listening to calming music. Physically, wear boxers and loose clothing when possible, especially when exercising. Avoid excessive use of saunas and hot tubs. This will keep the testicles cool and functioning properly.

Get clean

Excessive smoking and drinking have been linked to a host of negative health outcomes, HUK IV[O OH]L KL[YPTLU[HS LŃ&#x153;LJ[Z VU H JV\WSLÂťZ ability to conceive. Smoking tobacco has been linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility, while long-term use of marijuana can result in abnormally developed sperm. Alcohol can also reduce the production of normally formed sperm needed for a successful pregnancy. Stay away from steroids as well, as they have been found to cause testicular shrinkage, which can result in infertility. As much as possible, avoid environmental toxins such as chemicals, radiation, heavy metal exposure, and pollution, which have all been linked to low sperm production.

Get your vitamins

Eat lots of foods high in antioxidants (carotenes, vitamins A, C, E and selenium) such as green leafy vegetables, kale, JHYYV[Z JP[Y\Z IYVJJVSP JH\SPĂ&#x2026;V^LY HUK yams. You may want to consider taking supplements, especially if your vitamin C or zinc levels are low. Vitamin C (2,000 to 6,000 milligrams daily) helps prevent sperm from clumping or sticking together, thus improving the chances for fertility. Zinc supplementation (100 to 200 mg daily) has been shown to increase testosterone levels, sperm count and sperm motility. High zinc sources include oysters, organ meats, lean beef, turkey, lamb, herring, wheat germ, legumes and nuts. Other nutrients that have been shown to improve sperm counts include essential fatty acids (9 to 12 grams daily), chromium (1,000 mcg daily), selenium (200 mcg daily), copper (2 mg daily), vitamin E (800 IU KHPS` JVLUa`TL 8 TN KHPS` HUK B-complex vitamins (50 mg daily).

rusha National Park is the closest national park to Arusha town, located 5 km from town and 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park is one of the smallest but most diverse national parks in Tanzania. It has a wide range of vegetation – the slopes of Ngurdoto Crater are covered with rainforest, swamps and lush savannah at moorland on the slopes of Meru Mountain.

forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey is easily seen. In the middle of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog. Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of scrubby bushes like overgrown hares on spindly legs. More than 400 species of bird,

both migrant and resident, can be found in Arusha National Park. The rewarding climb up Mount Meru passes through forests of dripping Spanish moss, carpeted with clover and rises to open heath, spiked with giant lobelia plants. Delicate klipspringer antelope watch the progress of hikers from the top of huge boulders, and alpine desert underfoot. Once astride the craggy summit, the reward is a sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, breath-taking in the sunrise. Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha National Park and lions absent altogether, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen slinking around in the early morning and lurking next to waterfalls in the shadowy forest

It is also at dusk and dawn that the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon is most likely to clear, revealing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro, only 50 km (30 mi) away. But it is Kilimanjaro’s unassuming cousin, Mount Meru, the 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) that dominates the park’s horizon. Its peaks and eastern foot slopes protected within the national park, Meru offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbour, while also forming a rewarding hiking destination in its own right. Birding in Arusha National Park Almost 400 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Some

of them are migratory and only present between October and April, others are permanent residents. Especially the Momela lakes are a great place for bird watching, which host a large concentration of waterbirds, including flamingos. There is also a variety of raptors, which hide in the forested areas of Mount Meru. Activities in Arusha National Park You won’t be disappointed to have a few days’ safari in Arusha National Park. This park is ideal for a day tour/game drive, which can be combined with walking excursions or acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro. It takes about two days to reach

Mariakamba Hut and about four days to reach the top of Mount Meru. Moreover, visitors can participate in cultural interaction with Maasai tribesmen of Mkuru Village.

GETTING THERE

An easy 40-minute drive from Arusha. Approximately 60 km (35 mi) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The lakes, forest and Ngurdoto Crater can all be visited in the course of a half-day outing at the beginning or end of an extended northern safari.

The Treasure of Africa

Swahili means ‘coastal’ in Arabic, and the Swahili coast refers to Tanzania’s coastline and islands, a beautiful and historic region rich in history, natural beauty, art and culture. Ancient Greek manuscripts show that the east coast of Africa was visited by sailing vessels in classical times. They referred to the coast as Azania, hence the name Tanzania (Tan – Tanganyika; Zan –Zanzibar; and Azania).”

n the ninth or tenth centuries came Shirazi Persians from modern-day Iran, sailing their ancient dhows across the Indian Ocean. Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Indonesian merchants and pirates, traders and adventurers, all arrived over the centuries during which the Swahili coast was the centre of a thriving commercial civilisation, with its own

language, economy and artistic traditions. Today, reminders of the -Ü> >ÃÌ½Ã >} wVi Ì post can be found up and down the length of Tanzania. The brassbound chests and heavy wooden doors of the Swahili Empire are found on a far island, imported originally by the Arabic slave traders who led caravans into the interior in search of

fortune. On the coast itself, crumbling mosques nestle among palm trees by white beaches and Persian baths lie ruined in the remains of ancient villas.

Bagamoyo was once the centre of slave and ivory trading. It was the last point reached by the caravans of slaves who arrived here for transportation to faraway

places. Today this attractive coastal town still bears while waiting for transportation still stands, as does the tree under which they were bought and sold.

KILWA

Kilwa Kisiwani Island was once the trading centre of the Swahili Empire. The ruins of the settlement still remain and are considered to be one of the most important Swahili historical sites in East African. The

famous traveller and chronicler lbn Battuta visited Kilwa in the 14th century, describing his admiration for the architecture and graceful situation of the capital city. Later the island became a trading post for slaves travelling north from Mauritius and Mozambique. The end of the town supremacy as a trading port came when it was ransacked, ostensibly by “cannibals’’ in 1588.

Pemba Island, rumored to have once been inhabited by a race of mythical giants, is an untouched beauty that offers an undiluted experience of island life in the Indian Ocean. The tiny number of visitors to Pemba every year means that the island has little in the way of tourist infrastructure – which for alternative travellers is the main attraction. Small guesthouses are dotted around the island, and there are a couple of upmarket

The ruins, once a large mosque, include more than 40 tombs, Tanga has pleasant beaches and is a convenient point from which to visit the spectacular Usambara Mountains. For a small island in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has a long and unexpected history. For centuries the island has been a centre of slave and ivory trade, if not all trading, from central Africa to the rest of the world and was the world’s main producer of the highly valued clove spice. It is also the centre of Swahili language and culture. Zanzibar is the undisputed capital of the Swahili coast.

The Portuguese were ousted with the help of Oman, in the mid- 16th Century, whose vast trade connections had been severed by the entrance of the Portuguese. Zanzibar became the seat of the Omani empire, when Sultan Seyyid Said moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar in 1840, due

largely to its economic importance in the empire and unrest at home. This was to last only 50 years until the British, keen on expanding their colonial reach, declared Zanzibar a British Protectorate. This, in turn, was to last until 1963, when the British handed power back to the Sultan in a constitutional monarchy which was itself overthrown in early 1964 in a violent revolution which established the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day. |
