Tanzanian Women of Achiev

Women leading the way and making i By Rehema Fumbwe

O

nce again, Tanzanian women from across the country were brought together to celebrate each other’s work and accomplishments at the bi-annual Tanzanian Women of Achievement Awards event. Each of the over 400 women who attended the event on 7th March are pioneers in their fields, paving the way and working to reshape Tanzania for the better. The theme of this year’s awards was Women Leading the Way, paying tribute to exceptional women in the country who have not only achieved success in their respective fields but have made a significant difference in their communities.

“The event, which was organized by the board of TWA Association and Frontline Porter Novelli, was graced by Dr. Darleana McHenry, who is an education activist, the CEO/President of St. Carries Center, and the 2014 Woman of the Year from the 42nd Assembly District in the State of California. Speaking on the agenda of the event, Dr. McHenry said, “Women leading the way is all about how women can pick up the mantal, take charge of their lives and those who they care about, forge ahead and become icons. For years we’ve done a lot as women. We have built houses and planted gardens; we have nurtured children and done business. But most importantly, we have emancipated ourselves from the norm that men are the solution to every problem.” 16 I Dar Life I April 2015

hievement Awards 2015

The awards recognized women who have contributed in various sectors including; Arts and Culture, Business Entrepreneurship, Education, Social Welfare, Science and Technology, Sports, Young Achiever, Agriculture, Professional, Information and Communication, and Health. The Committee chair, Ms. Sadaka Gandi, explained that, “What we are looking for is women who have done great in their fields and gone a step further to use their achievement by giving something back to the society. Having personal success is one thing but pairing it with giving back to the society is what makes a true woman of achievement.” There were over 500 applications this year from all over the country, but only 40 nominees were shortlisted. It was a tough decision to make, but with the help of Delloite’s judging tool, the committee was able to come up with at least three finalists within each category and eventually one winner. The different winners of each category are:

1. Multichoice Tanzania, Arts and Culture Award: Dr. Penina Mlama, Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam specializing in Art in Education, Culture and Development, Theatre for Development, and Gender in Education and also the Executive Director of the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) Tanzania. 2. The prestigious award celebrates a lifelong commitment to serving Tanzania. This award has gone to women such as the late politician Bibi Titi Mohammed in 2009 and philanthropist and educator Dr. Maria Kamm in 2011. The story of this year’s lifetime achiever captured many people’s interest. Mrs. Mwenda, started humbly as a radio vocalist, and went on to create one of the oldest radio programs in the country focused on women and children, “Mama Na Mwana”. She is now the Founder and Executive Director of Bahari Schools.” The awards provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work and dedication of women at the frontline of the private and public sectors across the country. Showcasing the work of these women will hopefully inspire young women to become fearless influencers within their communities.

Dar was abuzz with a music concert by Electro Bamako that took place at Alliance Francaise this past month. Electro Bamako is an encounter, an interpretation of the vibes & emotions that embody Malian music, including its roots, songs & instruments. It is a fusion: laptop assisted by Funk/ Rock mixed with traditional music. A sort of bridge between African roots & NY underground Rock, Electro Bamako have a sound of their own, which belongs to them & them only: a respectful though modern-day translation of what they felt listening to traditional songs turned into a wholehearted & soulful mixture made for partying.

Dar Steps up for Elephants Special Fundraiser with Dr. By Josephine Smit “The ‘Step Up for Elephants’ fundraising dinner, in support of the Southern Tanzania Elephant Project (STEP), with special guest Dr. Jane Goodall, took place at the Kilimanjaro Hyatt Regency. The event raised awareness about Tanzania’s elephant poaching crisis and helped raise funds for elephant protection.”

The elephant-poaching crisis Over the last eight years, Tanzania has lost more than half of its elephants to a poaching crisis fuelled by the trade in ivory. Southern Tanzania, home to East Africa’s once great elephant kingdoms – Selous and Ruaha-Rungwa – has seen the worst of the killing. Poaching decimated the Selous elephant population by 66% in only 4 years, from 38,975 elephants in 2009 to 13,084 in 2013. The RuahaRungwa elephant population declined by 36% in this same period, from 31,625 elephants in 2009 to 20,090 in 2013. Elephants face similarly dramatic situations in many parts of their African range, and at the current rate of killing, could go extinct in Africa in less than 10 years. The loss of elephants is not only an ecological disaster – for elephants are key to shaping the ecosystems in which they live – but also represents a major threat to Tanzania’s economically important tourism industry. 24 I Dar Life I April 2015

J

Jane Goodall Securing a peaceful future for elephants Reversing the elephant poaching crisis will require a total ban on the ivory trade and an end to the demand for ivory, destruction of all ivory stockpiles, arrest and prosecution of the major traders here in Tanzania, and greater protection of elephants on the ground. The Southern Tanzania Elephant Project (STEP) works in Ruaha and Udzungwa supporting the protection efforts of the National Parks, monitoring elephant populations and the effects of poaching, and working with farmers living around National Parks to reduce crop-raiding by elephants and enhance human-elephant coexistence.

“At the event, Dr. Trevor Jones, Director of STEP, presented facts and figures on the poaching crisis, and explained how the growing demand for ivory in Asia has brought Africa’s elephants into the darkest period in their history. Dr. Jones illustrated how poaching is affecting elephant society, and explained that one consequence of poaching is an increase in the proportion of tuskless elephants. He added that another consequence of poaching is that it selectively removes the oldest and most experienced elephants from the population. As these older April 2015 I Dar Life I 25

individuals possess important ecological knowledge and experience, their loss threatens the survival of younger generations and the viability of remaining elephant populations.” Dr. Jones also spoke of the importance of working to protect elephants on the ground by supporting the anti-poaching efforts of Tanzanian wildlife authorities, and by working with communities to reduce human-elephant conflict and build support for anti-poaching around Protected Areas. He also stressed the urgent need for prosecution of ivory traders and a ban on the ivory trade, adding that strong national and international pressure could ensure these actions are taken before it is too late. This informative presentation was followed by a powerful short film about elephants made specially by photographer Michael North of Rise Up for Elephants. The film provided insight into the intimate social lives of elephants, and was a powerful testament to their beauty.

“Guests were then treated to a moving speech by the event’s guest of honour, Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall recalled lovingly her first encounters with elephants on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, and spoke of the similarities between elephants and the chimpanzees she famously studied, highlighting their intelligence and capacity for emotion. She also raised ethical issues around elephant poaching , saying that 26 I Dar Life I April 2015

elephants grieve their dead and suffer from the traumas inflicted on them by poaching. She spoke, too, of the suffering felt by rangers who risk their lives in a daily battle to protect elephants from poachers.” Dr. Goodall further stressed the importance of preserving elephants as a national heritage and said that one needs only to spend time with elephants to instinctively understand why elephants are worth preserving in their own right. She recounted movingly the story of the very last elephant in Burundi, before they went locally extinct in that country. She finished her speech with the warning that the same thing is about to happen in parts of Tanzania, and an impassioned plea that we have to prevent this from happening The event also raised funds for the work of STEP, with various items being auctioned including an original elephant painting by Sarah Markes, items of Pembe Club jewellery, holidays at Mdonya and Jongomero camps in Ruaha, and a giant elephant made of recycled flip-flops by Green Steps Foundation. STEP is immensely grateful for all the hard work of Yasmine Haji and her Elephant Lovers Committee, and all the other supporters and sponsors of the event including Monier 2000, Continental Outdoor Media, Coastal Aviation, Computer Connections, CMC, Plume Africa, Jasmine Bee, and many more . As a French guest explained, Ally Rehmtullah’s collections and style is soigné. 32 I Dar Life I April 2015

The event started with cocktail hour in the hotel ballroom. Ushers escorted guests to the Serena marquee while walking through an array of Mercedes-Benz vehicles displayed by CFAO Motors, Tanzania. As the guests were seated, the lights dimmed and the show began with a short display of men’s attire from Street Soul. Thereafter, Hisia, a Tanzanian alternative soul singer and songwriter, provided a sense

of harmony before the big bang. “As the model’s tipped high floppy hats for the cameras and others swayed their gowns, Ally Rehmtullah put on a show of sensual – and warm – elegance. The mix of clothes offered a variety of glamorous looks for women. In particular the very sharp jumpsuits for the evening were inspired by women’s inner strength.”

Remtullah explained he aimed to create a “sensual, textural collection, with a combination of maturity, a wonderland of women’s strength and dimension, from lush sophistication to the nomadic romance of artisanal shearlings to the spirit of simple elegance.” Special thanks goes to the following sponsors who made the show possible: Mercedes-Benzes, Vodacom

Tanzania, The Works, Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel, Glenfiddich, Jaggermaister, Raha Broadband, Continental Outdoors, Street Soul, Peroni Italy, J.C. Leroux, Alliance Insurance, i-view studios, MeTL – LG, EquiTrade, Darling Hair, 2M Media/MM Signs, AIM Group, Zanzi Cream Liqueur and Tanzanite Experience. Ally Rehmtullah 2015 -

Eleganza did not end after the show. The after party raged at Serena Hotel until the early morning hours. Glenfiddich Single Malt15 was served as the dance floor filled up and the music lead everyone to move. The rains stopped and the sun surfaced with an aura of glamour and panache. Now we wait for Mr. Rehmtullah’s next bravura collection, 2016!

40 I Dar Life I April 2015

Salum Kambi (he signs his artworks as Sanii Kambi, sanii = artist in Kiswahili) was born on April 10th, 1970 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His painting “startup” comes from his childhood, when he made caricatures of his schoolmates. After finishing primary school, Kambi was nominated as the best school artist. He is a self-taught artist who has been improving his skills in various workshops organized by art teachers or artists mainly from Germany. A big inspiration for Salum Kambi is well-established Tanzanian painter Raza Mohamed. No wonder - they don´t live far away from each other in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam. Another source of inspiration was his father (though not a painter) who passed recently, as Salum Kambi acknowledged in an interview with Afrum.

“Kambi has introduced a unique approach to canvas oil painting, using either a palate knife or a fine brush, and sometimes both. He loves painting women as he strongly feels that women in Africa sacrifice a lot for the family lives. He is a member of the Wasanii arts group. He has been exhibiting his art among other places in the Netherlands, Sweden and naturally in Tanzania. In 2004 he was selected for the African Art Festival in Rome, Italy. The same year one of his paintings was chosen for the reception building of the State House, Dar es Salaam. In summer 2008 his paintings were exhibited by Shambala Gallery in Danmark which is working closely with the Czech Embassy in Copenhagen. Salum Kambi is painting currently in the USA.” April 2015 I Dar Life I 41

BEAUTY

Take Care of You

Basics of Skin Care Routines Knowing what products work together, how they benefit your skin and the order in which to use them is incredibly important when selecting the best skincare routine for you. The information below is a great guideline you can follow to select a skincare routine that works best for you and your specific skin concerns, step by step! “The following is an overview of the types of products you can use, why you need them and what results you can expect. Keep in mind that if you have multiple skincare concerns, you may need to add more than one treatment or targeted treatment product. It is recommended to visit a skincare specialist for a professional facial whereby they can perform a detailed skin analysis and recommend appropriate products.

46 I Dar Life I April 2015

Anantara Spa Promotion

Receive a complimentary Express Facial and skin analysis when booking any 60 or 90-minute massage. Offer is valid from 1 April to 30 April 2015. This offer cannot be combined with any other discount. Salon services are not included in this special offer.

Step 1: Cleanser

Step 4: Moisturize

Rinsing with water is not enough to clean your face. When your face is clean, it allows the other products you use to work even better, morning and evening. With the appropriate cleanser, your skin will look and act healthier, feel smoother, and be ready to receive maximum benefits from your other products.

Used daily, moisturizers (cream, lotion, gel, or liquid texture) improve your skin’s healthy functioning and keep it feeling smooth and soft. You can (and should) use them around the eye area. When you use the right moisturizer for your skin type, you will see smoother, radiant skin that’s hydrated and healthier. Dry, dull, or flaky skin will be replaced by skin that looks and acts younger!

Step 2: Toner Toners with skin-repairing ingredients hydrate and replenish the skin’s surface immediately after cleansing. They also help reduce redness and dry patches. With the correct toner, your skin will feel softer and look smoother, and redness will be reduced. Those with oily skin will see smaller pores. Daily use will give your skin what it needs to function in a younger, healthier way.

Step 3: Exfoliants Sun damage causes the surface of the skin to become abnormally thick. Acne and oily skin complicate this further. Exfoliating eliminates this build up, which otherwise would cause clogged pores, uneven skin tone, dullness, and deeper wrinkles. Daily exfoliation with a good exfoliant will unclog pores, reduce redness, blackheads, and breakouts, diminish wrinkles, build collagen, and improve uneven skin tone.

Essential add-ons: Sunscreens Sunscreens with antioxidants are essential to protect your skin from sun exposure, which is the No. 1 cause of wrinkles, brown spots, and other signs of aging. Targeted treatments These products may be needed as an extra step to hydrate skin, absorb excess oil, calm skin, or treat a special need or occasional skin concern. Results depend on the targeted product you choose. For reservations, please email: spa. thekilimanjaro@hyatt.com or call +255 764 70 1234 ext. 828. Anantara Spa is open every day from 9am to 10pm.

CAREER

The “Bridge Job” Strategy

Making Money while you’re in Career Transition By Ford R. Myers President, Career Potential, LLC

“The “Bridge Job Strategy” is a pragmatic approach to carry you through a difficult employment or financial period.” Here are some interim options, where you can find work and earn money while continuing to search for the job you really want: Part-time or temporary job (retail stores, restaurants, business services, administrative, etc.). Try to find a position in a field you genuinely like. If you enjoy shopping or love the products of a particular store, consider working in retail. If you have 48 I Dar Life I April 2015

Work for family or friends (retail stores, services, small manufacturing operations, and every other type of business). Do you have relatives or friends who own or run businesses? Would you be comfortable working with them? In tough times, it is important to put your pride aside and ask for help. But in this case, the help would be mutual. Your friend or relative would be the lucky recipient of your services, and you would be gainfully employed, working for someone you already know and like. Contact every friend, relative, or acquaintance who owns or runs a business, and ask about their needs and challenges.

Home-based work (administrative, sales, computer work, creative assignments, bookkeeping, personal services, etc.). With the advent of the Internet and computer technology, it is easier than ever to do real work from home. Some of this work can be enjoyable and lucrative. There is no longer a stigma about working from home, and in fact, you may find that the flexible, independent lifestyle suits you. From copywriting to doing proposals to preparing tax returns, there’s no limit to the options. Ask yourself what skills you have, and offer your services to appropriate companies and families in your area. Contact everyone in your network to offer your services, and ask for referrals after your work has been satisfactorily completed. Odd jobs (handyman, construction, painting, sewing, moving and hauling, yard work, plowing, etc.). Are you handy around the house? Do you own special equipment or tools? Do you have trade skills that you could offer to other people in your town? There is always a need for reliable, professional help in these disciplines. If you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty, you can earn good money providing these much-needed services to organizations and individuals.

BUSINESS

Change How You Do Business

I

n today’s business climate, if you haven’t changed the way you are doing business, you will never be able to improve your sales growth, business value or overall business performance. Here are five proven strategies you can implement to quickly improve sales growth and increase the value of your business. 1. Focus on Niche Markets - Selling everything to everyone in a major market can blur your image and is very competitive. Instead, position yourself as a market leader in a niche market. Niche specialists focus on specific industries or type of customers. Based on previous sales history, pick a niche market that drives your greatest sales, profitability and quickest sales cycle. Focus your efforts on the proven niche market and this will drive sales growth with the least amount of effort. 2. Repackage Your Offerings - Drive dramatic sales growth by reinventing what you offer customers in a 52 I Dar Life I April 2015

Ways to Stimulate Sales Growth and Business Value

By Dennis Sommer manner that increases sales volume and profitability. Bigger sales revenue and profitability comes from bigger offerings. Offer super sizes, volume discounts, extended contracts or product bundles. Try small “Early Buy” incentives to increase volume, but keep them small with a time limit. Stand strong on the value your offering provides and stick with the original price. Do not discount pricing on your offerings if they truly provide the value described. 3. Sell Proprietary Products - Unique design, functionality and technology can make your products proprietary, which can increase the desirability of your products/services and the price a buyer is willing to pay. Proprietary products offer protection from the competition and enable you to sell your products at a higher price and profitability. 4. Differentiate Yourself Similar to selling proprietary products, you can sell more at a higher price if your

customer perceives your products and services are unique and different than others on the market. Even if you sell products that are not proprietary, you must show your customers what makes you different than everyone else. When you do this successfully, you become the best choice and selling at a higher price will not be an issue. 5. Get Rid of Underperformers - The best way to dramatically lower your costs and improve profitability is to get rid of all your underperformers. Evaluate all of your products and services and shelve them if they are not profitable or help drive sales of other offerings. Stop all marketing that is not delivering a positive return on investment. You should also evaluate your sales team and eliminate underperformers. This is a perfect time to build a strong team of top performers. Starting today, look at changing the way you do business!

Lights Up the Path to Fresh Design

Launch of 2015 Collection at

“Fashion Night In”

Doreen Mashika By Elizabeth Deusdedith “On an evening full of elegance and high expectations, Doreen Mashika turned it up for her mainland audience with an explosive “Fashion Night In”. The event featured exemplary colours and avant-garde designs, and the awardwinning designer and host for the night took centre stage as she paraded her Spring/Summer 2015 collection at Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam – The Kilimanjaro.” The audience was treated to a unique fashion experience of glamour and excitement that has become the hallmark of the Doreen Mashika Zanzibar (DMZ) brand. This was an event not to miss, with an international guest ensemble hailing from various regions mingling with fashionistas, designers, local celebrities and general lovers of fashion. Doreen Mashika opened the show with exclusive designs from her collection that explores the deconstruction of fashion. Influenced by the 1960’s “deconstructionism” movement, the latest collection 54 I Dar Life I April 2015

from the Zanzibari butterfly was a challenge to the modern outlook and perception of beauty and fashion. It was a look into her creativity, an exploration into form and a play on the raw appeal of fabrics/garments. Commenting on her chosen direction of design, Doreen Mashika explained,

“As a designer I try to think out of the box and break the chains that are the conventional outlook on fashion. I believe for a product to truly be memorable and appreciated, it has to challenge the thought process of individuals.” Brought to life by Londonbased production director Rob Soar and put through

the paces by a super talented team of models from Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, this extension of the DMZ brand treated onlookers with a fresh take on fashion that further established Doreen Mashika as a “go to” designer. Speaking after “Fashion Night In”, the Marketing Manager of Precision Air Services PLC Azda Nkulo April 2015 I Dar Life I 55

showered the designer with praise. He pointed out that his company’s support for the show was brought forth by the similarities between the aviation leader and DMZ as both are leaders in their respective industries and their continuous striving to be different from others has facilitated their success in young and dynamic markets.

Toyota Tanzania and Precision Air joined forces with other local companies including Luxury Short Safari and Q-WAY International through their Belvedere Vodka brand in providing a platform for the successful implementation of “Fashion Night In”. Doreen Mashika acts as a guiding light to her fellow designers with a focus that breaks the traditional mould without forgetting her African cultural heritage.

The words of the Precision Air Marketing Manager were echoed by Eliavera Timoth, the Toyota Tanzania Ltd. Deputy Marketing Manager. She stated that “Doreen is a young and vibrant designer and represents the modern Tanzanian spirit of individuals who are go-getters looking to shape the world in which they live in. As a company with deep roots within the Tanzanian society, we at Toyota Tanzania support such individuals and believe it is our duty to provide them with a platform for further success.”

Enjoy an ‘Egg-cellent’ Easte Ideas for Celebrating the Se By Criss Samba “After Christmas, Easter is the most important holiday in most countries, and Tanzania is no exception. This is one of the oldest festivals among the Christians. The occasion marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Outside of Christian communities, the Easter holiday is a very joyful occasion for many who celebrate with their loved ones, sharing and cherishing special moments with the ones closest to their heart.”

62 I Dar Life I April 2015

aster! Season The Easter holiday begins on Holy Thursday, followed by Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Since Easter is a national holiday, many businesses are closed on these days and everyone enjoys Easter vacation. For those looking for ways to enjoy Easter 2015, you’ve come to the right place, whether you want a budget family holiday or simply some fun ideas for how to celebrate at home.

Ways to celebrate:

• Light candles. • Dress up in special Easter outfits to go to church for prayer and worship. • Decorate your home with beautiful lilies. • Gather some small gifts (see below for ideas) and surprise your kids with Easter baskets. • Cook a special meal for your loved ones. Lamb is a common Easter holiday food as are hot cross buns. • Hold or participate in an

Easter egg hunt or an eggpainting competition. • Have a bonfire on the evening before Easter as they do in Europe.

Gift ideas for kids:

Easter is a wonderful time to give gifts to the kids in wrapped Easter baskets. For young girls, pretty earrings or bracelets or colored egg-shaped accent lights can be good gift options. If your son or daughter is a connoisseur of crafts, you can present him or her with a window painting kit. The kit should contain easy-to-clean brushes and easy-to-remove paint. A set of clays that could be baked in the oven can also keep the creative child totally engrossed for hours in making a beautiful pot for Easter flowers. A set of spiralling musical airplanes to hang over the crib can be a wonderful Easter gift for babies. For toddlers, jigsaw puzzles, blocks, bubbles, and stuffed animals are all great Easter gift ideas. P.S. – Hide the kids’ baskets and have them search for them

for an extra-fun surprise!

Gift ideas for adults:

You may want to celebrate Easter by giving gifts to your spouse, fiancé, boyfriend or girlfriend, friends, co-workers, or neighbors. Chocolates and baked goods are very popular, as are varieties of tea, coffee, and wine. Some people may appreciate flowers, a new book, jewelry, clothing, accessories such as a scarf or handbag. You can also give away tickets to an upcoming show, concert or special event. Even adults may enjoy searching for baskets on Easter! Tanzania’s year-round temperate climate and wide range of hotels and resorts means you don’t have to go far to enjoy some time in the sun. This is particularly good news for families, making an Easter holiday much more affordable. Here are some hotels and restaurants for those looking to get away over the break. The Miniaturist - by Jessie Burton

On an autumn day in 1686, 18 year old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. She has come from the countryside to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt, but instead she is met by his sharp-tongued sister, Marin. Only later does Johannes appear and present her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in unexpected ways. Nella is at first mystified by the closed world of the Brandt household, but as she uncovers its secrets, she realizes the escalating dangers that await them all. Beautiful, intoxicating and filled with heart-pounding suspense, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

Deliciously Ella - by Ella Woodward From sumptuous desserts, to food on the go, delicious dips, raw treats and rainbow bowls of awesome veggies, Ella’s philosophy is all about embracing the natural foods that your body loves and creating fresh, simple dishes which are easy to make and taste amazing. Featuring more than 100 new sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free recipes to excite your taste buds, this collection will inspire you to eat for better health, glowing skin and boundless energy. A reformed sugar monster herself, Ella knows just how daunting the idea of changing your diet can be. Her must-read blog, DELICIOUSLY ELLA, which gets two million visitors a month from all over the world, was inspired by her own health adventure and everything she has learned by healing herself simply through diet. Ella wants to show that this way of eating is absolutely not about deprivation and starvation, but instead is about embracing a positive, healthy way of life.

The Rules of Management - by Richard Templar Some people find management so easy. They glide effortlessly onwards and upwards through the system, the politics, the people problems, the impossible targets and the work overload. They always seem to say the right thing, do the right thing and know instinctively how to handle every situation. These golden principles show you how to inspire your team to perform (and what to do when it doesn’t). They reveal the secrets of managing yourself and your team in a way that gets results. Your life will be easier. Your successes will be greater. And when you are headhunted or promoted (again) nobody will be surprised – least of all you. These titles and many more are available at A Novel Idea Bookstore. To inquire about book purchases, please call Tel: +255 022 2601088 or email: info@anovelidea.co.tz.

Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania are becoming popular options for visitors not content merely observing the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer.

Stretching from the Taita Hills of southern Kenya to the southern highlands of Tanzania, the Eastern Arc Mountain Range has some of the oldest geological activity on the continent. Maasai pastoralists herd their cattle along the slopes and cultural tourism programmes give visitors the opportunity to learn about traditional medicines and local Maasai culture. Udzungwa Mountains National Park

A Cradle of Wildlife By Sara Maro

“One of the most special wilderness areas in Tanzania, the ancient rainforest in Udzungwa Mountains National Park will bring you close to several species which are unique to the area, such as the Iringa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey monkeys.”

The Udzungwa Mountains are covered by a dense forest, the growth of which is supported by the heavy rainfalls. Among the factors that have contributed to the richness of this park is the altitude, which ranges from 200 to 2600 meters. This altitude difference allows for the condensation of moist winds from the Indian Ocean,

dzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most outstanding, pristine, and unique wilderness mountain areas with a great altitudinal range of forest. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park, which is 1990 square kilometers, was the first terrestrial national park to be established in Tanzania. It is well known for its biologically diverse forest, with approximately 20-30% of the 200 animals and plant species that grow here not found anywhere else in the world.

which then form rains. This characteristic has made the Udzungwa Mountains the source of water catchments for the tributaries of River Kilombero, which is one among two rivers that form the Rufiji River. The park is unique as the only national park in Tanzania having close canopy and unbroken forest from lowland rainforest at 250m rising to highland forest 2576m, the highest peak in the park. The park has countless small plants such as Saint paullia and myriad large trees (over 30m high) such as Sterculia appendiculata and Antiaris toxicaria. The park has more than 2500 plant species total, with over 160 species known as medicinal plants. Botanists have also recently discovered several endemic plants in the park. “Udzungwa” is probably a linguistic corruption possibly by the Germans of the word “wadsungwa”, which refers to one of the tribes that lives on the slopes of the mountains. The park has numerous cultural and historical sites such as Bokela (mountain God), Mwanaruvele cave, Magombereka cave, Nyumbanitu and Ndundulu mountains. Nature & Wildlife Safari Experience at Udzungwa Mountains National Park Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a hothouse nurturing species found nowhere else on earth. The variety of animal species can be found here, including water buffalo, elephants, leopards, lions and reptiles. Other animals include the rare primate species Red colobus, Sanje crested mangabey monkeys, and black and yellow baboons, which share the same habitat on the mountain slopes. Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of the top ten forests for bird conservation in Africa. The forest’s 74 I Dar Life I October 2013

Udzungwa is ideal for hiking and climbing on trails through the rainforests and along the escarpments. The plateau is a natural tower top, with views of sugar plantations against a patchwork of grassland and mountain forest extending over 100 kilometers. The centrepiece is the Sanje River, which reinvents itself as a spectacular waterfall, plunging 170 meters through the forest to land in a mist in the valley below. Visitors can enjoy hiking through dense forest on the steep slope to the waterfalls while viewing the Kilombero flood plain and being entertained by endemic primates, butterflies, and birds songs. Camping is also an option for adventurous visitors.

Things to Do in Udzungwa Mountain National Park

There are varieties of different activities and things to do that are different to those found in typical destinations in Tanzania. A stay in Udzungwa allows you to get out of the vehicle and do something new. • Bird watching in and around the Udzungwa Mountains and the Kilombero Valley’s fields and sugar plantation. • Mountain biking around the Kilombero Valley or Mang’ula
