OF ORANGE

Issue two for the year done and I promise I’ll stop counting them from here on out. As I said last week, it was a bit of a rude shock coming back into the office, but things are picking up and we are ready for a big year ahead. This week I had the privilege of chatting with the delightful Ada Clark in Millthorpe. At 93, Ada is still very much a working artist and in February will be opening her Millthorpe gallery for a special week of sales to celebrate her 29th year in business in the village.

Suite 3/241 Lords Place ORANGE 02 6361 3575 reception@oclife.com.au

I also ducked out to Lake Canobolas on Tuesday to catch the visit of NSW Premier Chris Minns and get a look at all the improvements that have been made over the past six months. It’s looking great and worth the trip out. And, after speaking with Council staff, I understand there are still new amenities to come as well as a floating boardwalk along the western shore. I look forward to seeing the whole project when it’s finished.

NSW Premier visits Eugowra, inspects Lake Canobolas upgrade

N

SW Premier Chris Minns joined Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib and Member for Orange Phil Donato in Eugowra on Tuesday to update the community on the joint Commonwealth and State Government $100 million Central West Recovery and Resilience Package. “We know people just want to get back into their homes, that’s why flood recovery remains a key priority for the NSW Government,” the Premier said. “This is not about a simple fix, it’s a concerted effort making sure that communities in the Central West can build back stronger and an acknowledgement that the NSW Government is standing with them for the long-haul.” Premier Minns said they are committed to ensuring the community remains at the centre of recovery efforts and that community consultation sessions across flood-affected communities of the Central West will begin in February, ensuring local

$57 million of the funding will be used for a Community Asset Program and a Regional Transport Resilience Fund that will see vital transport infrastructure like bridges and flood crossings replaced and roads improved. Both programs will focus on building back better to ensure communities are better prepared in the face of natural disasters. Before leaving the Central West, the Premier stopped by Lake Canobolas to inspect the progress of the $1.3 million upgrade, which is being funded by the NSW Government, Orange City Council and Cadia Valley Operations, Since works began in June 2023, retaining walls with built-in paths have been constructed to make the lake’s

The internal roads between the lake and the café have been realigned and a new lawn and shade structures have been installed. New, accessible amenities blocks are still to be built alongside the new playground and on the western side of the lake, as is the 2.5-metre-wide, wheelchair-accessible floating boardwalk on the western shore. Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said he was pleased to have the opportunity to share progress on the upgrade with the Premier. “This upgrade of Lake Canobolas is going to make what is already a very popular spot for Orange families even more attractive,” Cr Hamling said. The list of projects was developed after community engagement and the grant application for the upgrade was supported by a number of community groups who regularly use the lake.

“the battler”, Mr Taylor passed away in January 2022 after a long battle with cancer. The scholarships are open to residents in Barwon, Bathurst, Cabonne, Cootamundra, Dubbo, Murray, Orange and Parkes state parliamentary areas who are pursuing study next year and are experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage or hardship. Each prospective student can benefit from up to $20,000 of support per annum and multiple scholarships are available. There is no applicant age limit and students aged 15 years upwards can apply. Applications will be assessed on need or merit. OCTEC Limited Chair Jeff Whitton said the scholarship program honours Mr Taylor’s commitment

to community development. “OCTEC’s experience on the frontline showcases the width and depth of missed opportunities, inequality and unidentified talent in regional and rural areas,” Mr Whitton said. State Parliament Member for Orange Phil Donato encourages students of all ages to apply, saying this is a “wonderful opportunity to make a real point of difference in their lives. It’s a great investment that OCTEC are making into our next generation. I’m only too happy to get on board and support it,” Mr Donato said. Ada celebrates a colourful career

A

da Clark has a personality that’s as vibrant as the paintings that fill her Millthorpe art studio.

A working artist for nearly 60 years, Ada, now 93, is about to enter her 30th year of business in the historic Central West village and has decided to open up her gallery for a rare sale of her original works, prints, placemats, greeting cards and more. “Well, it’s to celebrate 29 years in business,” says Ada, “I’ve only had one little sale in 29 years and I thought I should celebrate the fact… and I thought it’d be a bit of fun!” Ada moved from her Blue Mountains home to Millthorpe in 1994 following the death of her husband, the classical composer Clifford Abbot. Looking to make a fresh start she took out a lease on the old stables behind the Commercial Hotel and opened her own gallery. “I had to clean out the horse manure and I

put a stove in and I painted the walls white,” recalls Ada. “But if I hadn’t been able to make money, I would have been pretty hopeless because the rent was only 12 dollars per week,” she laughs. Twelve years later, when the music from the pub became too much for her, Ada relocated the gallery to her home, Ada’s Place, a few blocks away in William Street, where she has continued to sell her colourful paintings and prints of local landscapes and scenes from her extensive world travel. “I’ve painted in Europe, I’ve had exhibitions in Europe… I used to go overseas every two years and then I’d have an exhibition at the Beaver Galleries in Canberra and then get the ambassador of the country that I painted to open it,” says Ada. “And I’ve had… I don’t know how many onewoman shows. So I’ve sort of been selling all my life. I’ve sold thousands of paintings over the years! I also did masses of pottery. “And, on my website, I’ve sold placemats, hundreds of them, all over Australia!” Ada was just 19-year-old when she left

New Zealand to study at the Central School of Art in London. She has not stopped painting since and is proud of being able to continue making a living through her art. “When I was in my 50s, I thought maybe I shouldn’t be doing art, I should be doing something else,” says Ada. “Then I thought, no. That’s my great love. And look, nobody would employ me at 93 and I’m still making money out of it!

from the Central West was featured in an exhibition at the Orange Regional Gallery in 2022. “When you’re in the city, it’s a frenetic world. The beauty of living in the country, painting, is you’ve got more time to think and I think it’s a great asset to an artist, living in the country,” says Ada. “And I just love painting the bush. I always paint on the spot and I love being in the bush and hearing the birds and getting the atmosphere of it!”

...I’ve painted in Europe, I’ve had exhibitions in Europe… I used to go overseas every two years...

“I’m glad that I’ve stuck with it,” she continues. “I always encourage and help other painters... I say, stick at it because in your old age, you can still do it, you don’t have to be employed by anyone. It’s a big asset.” While Ada has painted in dozens of countries, she says there is no inspiration quite like the Australian bush. Her work

While a recent hip replacement has her slowed down, Ada is not going to let that stop her art. She is already making plans for a retrospective exhibition of her work for her 100th birthday.

“It gives me an incentive to stay alive,” she laughs. “I probably won’t make it but still, there’s no harm in having dreams!” Ada Clark will be holding a sale of her work from Monday to Saturday, February 5-10 at 5 William Street, Millthorpe. See below for more details.

New history by local casting champion a real catch

I

t is doubtful that there is anyone more knowledgeable on the history of competitive fly casting in Australia than Orange’s Kevin Laughton.

Fly-fishing alongside his father from the age of five, Kevin, 86, has competed locally, nationally and internationally over more than seven decades. He was just twelve when he won his first competition, the J.N. Brazier Fly Casting Cup out at Lake Canobolas. The following year Kevin won his first of many Australian Championships.

“From then on, I just kept on going and going,” says Kevin, brushing over his long list of achievements. “It’s all around glory, no money, unfortunately. I should have taken up tennis or cricket or something,” he laughs. The sport of fly casting involves both accuracy and distance events. In the accuracy events, competitors must land their fly inside five 30-inch aluminium hoops. “In 1958, I cast 176 feet, that was the best,” recalls Kevin. “A lot of people have trouble casting a lure that far!”

“Where our customers are the heart of the community”

With more than 70 years of personal experience on the competition circuit, Kevin and long-time friend and fellow competitor Geoffrey Newman have compiled a new history of the sport, A Century of Tournament Fly Casting in Australia 1907–2007, beginning with the Rod Fishing Society’s first casting competition held in 1907 in Sydney’s Centennial Park. “There are photos in there taken of the old boys in their tweed jackets and what-haveyou, casting in Centennial Park,” says Kevin. “And it tells of the old casters, some of the fellas that I cast against, actually: Bill Southam in Sydney, a very, very well-known split-cane rod maker. Malcolm Gillies from Victoria; he was another cane rod maker.

there just because of the fact I’ve been casting that long! The book was originally a labour of love for Geoffrey Newman, who asked Kevin to help him finish it due to his failing health.

...It’s all around glory, no money, unfortunately. I should have taken up tennis or cricket...

“I cast against all these old fellas. When I was 14, 15 or 16 these blokes had all just come back from the war and were over 40 or 45 years of age. Of course, I’m now the oldest one who’s still alive who knew anything about all these old blokes… There’s quite a few photos of me in

“Geoff, he’s a mate of mine, I met him through casting. He was a secretary of the Red Tag Club in Melbourne and he prepared most of the book. He, unfortunately, two years ago had a heart attack and he rang me and said, ‘I don’t know that I’m going to be able to complete this book’,” explained Kevin.

“So I drove to Melbourne and picked up all the information that he had, and it’s taken me nearly two years to complete the book, but Geoff did all the initial work on it.” Geoffrey Newman and Kevin Laughton’s book, A Century of Tournament Fly Casting in Australia 1907–2007, can be purchased locally at Collins Booksellers Orange, and Bullets and Bits.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

What Do You Want Your RETIREMENT To Look Like? Holidays, golf, yoga, time with kids and grandkids? What do you want your retirement to look like? This is one of the questions I usually ask everyone when they come see me. And everyone has a different answer. It’s very much a personal thing.

FREE MASTERCLASS EVENT: MAKE YOUR MONEY DO MORE IN 2024 6.30pm MONDAY 12 FEBRUARY

No matter what you want your retirement to look like, how are you going to get there? Do you have a plan to make it happen? One thing is certain: the sooner you start planning, the better your chances of achieving your retirement goals! By the time you reach retirement, you will have had decades of earning an income. Will you be able to retire from your job and enjoy the fruits of your labour the way you hope to? If you’re not sure of the answer,

then book yourself in for our upcoming free Masterclass – Make Your Money Do More In 2024 – and get clued up on what some of your options are and what you can be doing to maximise your chances of a comfortable retirement. Planning is where it all begins for your retirement. If you don’t plan properly, it could be the difference between staying retired or having to go back to work, or even running out of money. Is that a risk you are willing to take? I believe that sound financial planning is rooted in education and that’s why this free Masterclass is designed to empower people in our community about the importance of understanding all the puzzle pieces that need to be put together to have a secure retirement.

Some of the key takeaways will be: - Ways you can make your money work harder - Understanding the different tools you can use to invest for retirement - The key numbers you need to be aware of - How to avoid overpriced and risky financial products, which can be a ticking time bomb and what you can do instead - Where to get help with planning for retirement This is an education-only event. As an independent financial adviser, I do not have any ties to any product providers.

with HELEN MCANULTY

How we used to behave Lord Shaftesbury, the 19th-century philosopher said: “Politeness may be defined as a management of words and actions whereby we make other people have a better opinion of us and themselves.”

“There are three people within yourself, Who you are, whom you think you are, And who you really are.” - William Shakespeare.

T

One group member echoed these thoughts when she said that, after a lot of thought, she had decided that the sentiment which is the basis of most religions and known as ‘The Golden Rule’ was the glue that held society together.

his perceptive observation was made by William Shakespeare and is possibly the incentive behind how we act towards each other to this very day.

The late singer Prince surprisingly also expressed this view when he said: “The Bible is a study guide for social interaction.”

The Oral History Group has thought quite deeply about the way we used to interact socially and how this has changed our actions and reactions to our world in the 21st century.

We nodded agreement with that and Doreen showed her grandmother’s little recipe book which dispensed recipes and good advice to young brides. “At the end of a visit, leave as soon as you say goodbye, don’t linger,” it advised.

We agreed that the world and its customs have changed enormously over the years, especially since technology altered our ways of thinking and doing.

Many of us remembered only too well how long it takes some people to wave farewell and finally depart.

In the slightly calmer times that we can remember, etiquette was an outline for how we should behave in any given situation and, although we didn’t always carry it out to the letter, it was always there in the back of our minds, nagging at us to behave properly.

It was also strongly in favour of certain foods: ”Children should be made to eat the fat on their meat as this is the most nutritious part and many children have a great aversion to it.” How times have changed, we thought.

In my research, I discovered that quite a few illustrious historical figures have felt obliged to comment on the behaviour of society.

T

here are many varieties of basil and nearly all are edible. All are in the family Lamiaceae. Ocimum basilicum is the botanical name for common (or sweet) basil which is the plant you are most likely to know. Nearly all basils are annual plants, dying back once the cooler weather starts, and frost will decimate them.

PLANT OF THE WEEK

Summer love: it’s basil time

site. It purportedly also has antibiotic and antiinflammatory properties. It will ease a cold, calm the tummy, and is even said to aid eyesight.

It’s time to plant some! Plant your seedlings (I rarely grow from seed). If you plant basil beside tomatoes it will send white fly, the scourge of many a vegetable garden, packing. And of course, basil and tomatoes are beautiful culinary companions. If outdoors isn’t an option, you can grow indoors in a protected sunny spot. Whether growing inside or outside, keep it watered, mulched and use a slow-release fertilizer. Snails and slugs adore it, so be vigilant. Once the season is over and it starts to look a bit sad, pull it out and make space for something else. It’s at its best for use during late spring to early autumn. During its growing season here in Orange I use it almost every day as it complements most meats and fish, is a great addition to salads, casseroles (dried and fresh) and forms the base of most pesto. Snipping a little each day encourages renewed growth. Try using it to make an Italian panzanella, a beautiful tomato and bread salad, which is simple and utterly delicious, as is a Thai beef salad. Some of my favourites include common (or sweet), holy (or Thai), red, lemon and Greek basil. Ask your local nursery or Bunnings if they can source some of these rarer varieties. Basil can help deter insects and calm bites and stings, if crushed and rubbed onto the bite

Basil insect repellent: Roughly chop a handful of basil leaves. Now crush in a mortar and pestle with a little vegetable oil until you’ve formed a green gooey paste. Alternatively, blitz with your weapon of choice. Put the mix into a spray bottle with some hot water. Once the water has cooled, you can use it on yourself or spritz it around the places you will be sitting. It smells gorgeous and will keep insects at bay. The spray will keep for about a week in the fridge. It’s also said that eating basil will deter insects.

OPEN FATIGUE I love this time of the year. I love that it is summer. I love that it is the school holidays and the kids are home giving us the opportunity to go exploring or just hang out together. I love that the cricket is on. I especially love that it is Open season. The Australian Open really is a great two weeks of sport. It blows my mind at the skill and endurance that the players have. As with every year, I start the tournament with such excitement as the games are on in the background as we go about our day. Our evenings are filled by cheering on whoever is playing (and getting grumpy at broadcasters for not showing the games we’d actually like to watch). The problem is however that tennis is one of those spectator sports that really suck you in. As the hours drag on into the night, you suddenly realise it’s after 11pm and you have to work the next day. You think to yourself: one more point, one more set and, before you know it, it is after midnight. Then there is the heartache of seeing the players you put all of your hopes and expectations on, crashing out in spectacular fashion. And that is just the first week. I know that for me, by the time the finals roll around my appetite for watching another four-and-a-half-hour epic has well and truly dried up. Maybe you have felt that as you’ve followed the Australian Open this year. Perhaps like me, after seeing Alex De Minaur

bow out in the fourth round, you can’t bring yourself to watch the next few games, but you’ll probably tune into the final just to see who eventually wins. In a way, it is a bit of a snapshot of how we can approach life. We start a new season with excitement and expectation and hope. But it is not long before fatigue sets in. After a disappointment occurs, we just want to throw in the towel. We can be filled with a sense of not really knowing where to go next or what to do, so we just go through the motions without any real sense of purpose. Perhaps that’s where you are at? We all know that life is full of disappointments… both the expected and unexpected. We know that at times life can be tough and fatigue can set in, making each day difficult. Where can we find a sense of renewed purpose or hope? As a Christian, it is not found in myself or in my resolve, but in someone else. One of my favourite passages in The Bible is Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This is where the answer to all our longings are found. Where our hearts find refreshment. Where our souls truly find rest.

THE DAY ELEPHANTS RACED IN ORANGE It was a red-letter day in Woodward Street in February 1963 when two elephants raced over a 100-yard course, watched by hundreds of spectators. Jockeys Denis Straney of Radio 2GZ and Tony Murphy of CBN Channel 8 looked anything but regal as they clung desperately to their mounts. Tony won the race convincingly. The race raised funds for organisers the Lions Club of Orange for an asthma appeal. Photo courtesy of the Central Western Daily Negative Collection, Orange & District Historical Society. People with historical inquiries may call at Heritage House, 148 March Street on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 4pm.

THUMBS UP to Orange Hospital Emergency staff who deserve a big thank you from the people who presented on the 5th of January! I was there for a sore ankle and the service from all staff was first class! They treated everyone with the same compassion and care while I was there. You are all a credit to your profession which is always under pressure. Thank you! THUMBS UP and thank you to the two wonderful staff members at Harris’s Farm who found my bag, containing many valuable items, and stored it away safely until this very upset lady returned looking for it. It all happened a couple of days before Christmas. Thanks for your honesty and for caring. THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for their prompt response to calls about a large fallen tree limb near the local pool. The limb had precariously arched itself across a popular walking track in the park there. Well done Council! On that, I would encourage those who make an occupation of bagging Council through this magazine, to show some balance and consideration while ever money still doesn’t grow on trees.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for not looking after Orange Showground. Not mowing, emptying bins after markets and in the caravan areas. And Thumbs Down for not having a toilet block near the new lovely play area on the eastern side of Lake Canobolas. Thumbs Down also for the uneven, loose slippery-when-wet pavers up and down Summer Street.

THUMBS UP to Charlie for all her work on the Orange Rep Touch Football canteen. THUMBS DOWN to Orange

City Council, make up your mind on the speed limit on Bathurst Road. 80 km on road at OMG, 60 km on road work sign. The road works have been finished for quite some time - can’t be that hard to fix.

THUMBS UP to Emily Thompson “The good-enough parent” for your “TripAdvisor review of ICU” in the Orange City Life January 18 edition. Thank you! Your story was a joy to read. As a health care worker it’s lovely to hear positive feedback. I hope you are doing well and have a great healthy life.

THUMBS DOWN again for Orange’s fuel price gouging! Happened to be in Bathurst a few times recently, on an average 10-20 cents a litre cheaper for high-octane fuel. Someone said last year that our servos have to make money. How do the Bathurst servos survive?

THUMBS UP and thank you to the very kind lady who returned a Fella Hamilton bag back to the store. From a very grateful Dubbo shopper. THUMBS UP to Marion at the Australia Post shop in Summer Street who went out of her way to fully explain and help me through a new postal service. Your efficient, friendly and professional manner was very much appreciated and your kind and thoughtful approach and valuable time made my day! You were wonderful! THUMBS UP to good people, like those who carry out spur-of-the-moment random acts of kindness. Thumbs up also to recipients of such acts who then pay it forward.

THUMBS DOWN to Aldi Orange. Not only have they refused to stock our Australia Day merchandise, their latest refusal is to return their lighter, user-friendly trolleys which had a higher basket in which to place groceries instead of the huge, massive ones which one nearly falls in head first when trying to place items. Elderly patrons like myself have trouble lugging around those massive trolleys. THUMBS DOWN to the person that had a complaint about “ex-Sydney drivers” speeding through roundabouts in Orange. How do you know they are from Sydney? Do they have a big sign on the roof of their vehicles? I’m ex-Sydney and a very courteous driver and, just for the record, I have seen more traffic in Orange than in a lot of suburbs in Sydney. Also, what’s the complaint over these people in supermarkets? How do you know they are ex-Sydney? People complain about every little thing! THUMBS DOWN to the young wardsman who didn’t ask their workmates if they wanted takeaway for tea. How disrespectful.
