WE CAPTURE THE

note

OF ORANGE

Here’s our final issue for 2023! It’s been a long year and we will very much be enjoying the next few weeks as we take a break and get ready for 2024. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who allows us to do what we do here at OC Life. The publishing world has changed dramatically in the past decade or two, but we know there is still a need out there to tell good local stories, let people know what’s going on in our part of the world, and celebrate the people who make our community tick. So, we’d like to thank our advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t be able to do this. And thanks, too, to our photographer and our contributors, who really add a little flavour to our magazine. We will miss Ruben and his cooking column, and we really have been missing ‘The Good-Enough Parent’, Emily Thompson. Emily has had a few health issues of late, but we very much hope to welcome her back in 2024!

O

range Public School has renamed its annual Sportsperson of the Year award in honour of local sporting legend, Yvonne “Toot” Keegan.

Toot Keegan, who died in October this year, was a fervent supporter and champion of all local sports, but in particular netball, a sport she played at a state level and she remained an active coach, mentor and committee member with the local netball association for more than six decades. A former Orange Public School student herself, Toot’s five children also attended the school and several of her grandchildren are current students.

Announcing the change at the Year 5 and 6 end-of-year presentation day last week, OPS Assistant Principal Michelle Black, said Toot was a dedicated member of the school community. “Toot’s deep connection with our school was evident in her unwavering support and love for Orange Public,” Ms Black told the assembled students, parents and other family members at the presentation. “A passionate sportsperson and a skilled coach, Toot left an indelible mark on various sports, including rugby league, swimming, athletics and basketball. However, her truest passion lay in netball, where she coached and managed many Orange Public School netball teams.” Ms Black said renaming the award will

“Toot Keegan’s Sportsperson of the Year award not only commemorates her dedication but also inspires current and future students to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, passion and resilience. May her memory continue to resonate within our school community for years to come,” Ms Black said. The inaugural Toot Keegan Sportsperson of the Year award was then presented to the multi-talented Grace Goodlock, who has excelled in the pool, at track and field events and in numerous team sports. Grace was selected in the OPS cricket, rugby union, hockey, touch football and soccer teams. She was also selected in the rugby 7s and touch football Western Teams that played at the

PSSA State Championships. Toot’s daughter, Emily Callaway, was there to present Grace with the newly renamed award. She said it was a massive honour for the family and a fitting recognition of Toot’s dedication to the school. “Toot’s been involved since we were kids and obviously she was a student here as well, so she’s a massive fan of the school and just gave a lot of time, from canteen duty to coaching teams and just supported so many teams all the way through,” Emily said. She would be very humbled by it all, but probably very embarrassed and cross at the same time; she didn’t like being in the limelight. But it’s lovely and a real honour.”

Orange Edible Garden trail celebrates the backyard veggie patch

A

trio of keen local garden lovers are launching a new annual garden event that celebrates and champions people growing their own food at home. The inaugural Orange Edible Garden Trail — March 23-24, 2024 — will be a weekend-long event during which people who grow food in their home gardens will open them up to the public. The Edible Garden Trail concept was started in the Blue Mountains and it’s since inspired other similar open garden events across the state. It was after experiencing the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Trail for themselves that Catherine Hamilton, Min Kelly and Mysie Harper decided to create their own right here in Orange. “Min and I went and spent the weekend and visited all these gardens… We’ve been back again and just really enjoy it,” said Catherine

“It’s a real grassroots, natural, communityminded sort of event, where rather than gardens needing to look really pristine, they’re practical, they’re growing things and there are things to learn from everyone. “These two were like, we should definitely do it — and they have dragged me along for the ride!” The Orange Edible Garden Trail will be a self-guided tour so people can choose to visit all the gardens or just the one. The idea is to have a variety of gardens, big and small, so that anyone visiting will find ideas and inspiration that they can then use in their own gardens, “There’s lots of reasons to grow food… just lots of benefits to your health, your household, the environment, community selfsufficiency,” said Catherine. “But apart from that, it just gets people chatting and showing off what they do, and you get to see other people’s backyards,

STONE BENCHTOP REPAIRS engineered stone, marble, granite and porcelain

which is fun.” “And it’s good to connect with other gardeners,” added Min. “Like nerds of any type, gardeners really do thrive better when we’re connected.” Min gave the example of the “Garden Enthusiast Orange NSW” Facebook group. From small beginnings, there are now 4,000 active members and the online community has led to the creation of a local plant exchange.

But first, Catherine said they are looking for people willing to open up their own garden and be part of next year’s garden trail. They are not looking for “show gardens”, she said, but practical working gardens that deliver delicious home-grown fruit, vegetables and herbs.

ORANGE RANKED THIRD MOST FESTIVE CITY IN AUSTRALIA

Uniting Seniors Gym exercise physiologists Michael Dillon and Tim Eslick, talk senior health...

Orange is the third most festive city in Australia, according to a new study of internet search data.

Representatives of Parke’s Frontline Ball hand over their generous $79,000 donation to RHCCW Executive Officer Rebecca Walsh.

Online language learning marketplace Preply conducted the study using regional search data to determine which cities in Australia are the most and least festive.

Parkes digs deep for Ronald Mcdonald House Charities Volunteers and staff at Ronald McDonald House Charities Central West (RMHCCW) in Orange are celebrating a generous donation from the Parkes community. The donation of almost $79,000, proceeds from the recent Parkes Frontline Ball, is a much-needed contribution and it will go towards providing free accommodation and services for families whose baby, child or adolescent requires specialist and life-saving treatment in Orange Hospital. “We have a team of over 130 volunteers here at the house and this donation so close to Christmas has given us all a boost,” said RMHCCW Executive Officer Rebecca Walsh. That this generous donation came from the Parkes community is particularly relevant, Ms Walsh said, as more families from Parkes than any other area in the state come to stay at

MERRY CHRISTMAS he Christmas holidays are just around the corner, and our region is brimming with festive cheer!

continues to be as we move through the long and exhausting recovery and rebuilding process.

Amid the joyous chaos of Christmas, filled with gatherings of friends and family, tractor loads of turkey, and swimming pools of pavlova, the summer holidays give us a chance to take stock of how far we have come in the past year.

Amid the devastation of that time, and in the year since, stories of strength and courage, faith and friendship, and hope and community have helped our villages and towns get back on their feet. The determination of our country communities to come back and fight on has been unwavering. To me and the rest of our country, it has been awe-inspiring.

While there have been many sad and difficult days since - days of worry and stress, days of exhaustion - there have also been days of joy as more milestones on the road to recovery are reached and passed.

It is community that has carried our devastated communities forward, from the first moments of the tragedy, and so it

LOSING THE FAITH AS NATIONALS TURN BLIND EYE

I

t’s a sad fact that more and more people are losing faith in our political institutions and political parties. Communities around Australia are becoming increasingly cynical about the way political parties operate and the tactics they use. What has happened to political vision and leadership? There was a time when political parties provided it. I think back to the days of war hero and former Member for Orange and Deputy Premier, Charlie Cutler. Look at Bathurst’s Ben Chifley. Contrast those days with what has been occurring in our area lately. I’m talking about the package recently sent via Australia Post to my home.

ORANGE ELECTORATE OFFICE 1/179A Anson Street PO Box 673 ORANGE 2800

The sender’s address on the package appeared to be fictitious and my family and I, including my children, were very shocked and concerned that our home was being targeted. In accordance with protocols, I notified the Australian Federal Police, and they in turn contacted Orange police who investigated and found that the package had been sent using a fake name, address and signature and was paid for with cash. The CCTV at the post office revealed that the sender of the package is the Chair of the Calare Federal Electorate Council of the NSW National Party, Janelle Culverson. She is a former Cabonne Shire Councillor and aside from the remaining state MPs, is the most senior National Party member in the region.

The package contained empty wine bottles bearing labels carrying an insulting message.

resignation from her position but it’s been nothing but silence from the Nationals since.

When confronted by police, she admitted to sending it.

Their silence shows they don’t take this issue seriously. It’s as if they really approve of this nastiness and the party operating in the shadows. No leadership. Turn a blind eye.

This wasn’t a joke. The sending of the package and the steps taken to conceal her identity, created fear, anxiety and stress for our whole family, including my children. You wonder who may be watching your home. Should you be leaving the house? Should you be going to Parliament? It raises the fear of escalation because you don’t know what else could be coming or what may happen next. Family members don’t deserve to be brought into politics this way. The National Party have asked for Ms Culverson’s

Sadly, this looks like the new politics. Whatever it takes, whatever the damage. If the home and family of a National Party MP had been subjected to this by an opposing party, the Nationals would have been demanding an immediate apology, resignation and expulsion of that person from that party. The ongoing silence of the Nationals says so much about what that party has become. Is it any wonder that people are cynical?

brings Eugowra community together, one year on from floods

R

ural Aid has provided a night of joy for the flood affected Eugowra community, one year on from the catastrophic flooding event that swept the town.

On Friday 1 December, Rural Aid hosted a free community BBQ at the Eugowra Showgrounds supported by Newmont Cadia, attended by more than 150 locals.

Local musicians provided entertainment and a dozen support agencies provided face-to-face assistance. “Rural Aid has been helping central west farmers long before last year’s flood, and we’ll continue to be here for them long after,” Mr Warlters said.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said the small central west town was still in the grips of disaster recovery.

“Through hay drops, financial assistance, wellbeing counselling, volunteer expeditions, water deliveries, and community events, Rural Aid has proudly stood with central west farmers when they’ve need us the most.”

“Understandably, the deadly flash flood is still having a huge impact on Eugowra and its surrounds,” Mr Warlters said.

Rural Aid’s efforts in the ongoing recovery of the region have been boosted by generous business partners.

LET’S TALK MONEY

with DANIEL MCGREGOR

MAKE YOUR MONEY DO MORE IN 2024

A

s we close out 2023, it’s a great time to think about what you want to achieve financially in 2024.

What are the goals you would like to achieve going forward? Setting goals is really important. Sadly, the reality for most people is that after setting financial goals, they then don’t put a plan in place to achieve them. This likely leads to them failing to achieve the set goals, which leads to discouragement. Over time, the failure to put in place a financial plan costs people the financial freedom they could have achieved. In many ways, I see the job of a financial adviser as awakening people to the costs of inaction. The longer people take to start implementing a solid financial plan, the harder and harder it gets to play catch-up.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with thousands of people over almost two decades of being a financial adviser. In that time, I’ve noticed there are certain things that have usually held people back when it comes to taking control of their money: • Most people simply don’t know how to get started when it comes to things financial. There is just too much information and there are too many options. • A lot of people prefer to just hope things will work out over time. Hope is not a plan. • Many of us get stuck in the struggles of our day-to-day existence, trying to juggle work, family and social lives. It’s easy to delay putting in place strategies for longterm financial success. • People often focus on saving rather than

investing. While saving is the important first step, the biggest investment mistake is not investing. • Often, people fear investing. Many of us are scared of losing money, meaning that fear can override what are sensible investment strategies and lead us to not take action (Hint: there’s crazy, silly investing that has a high likelihood of failure, and then there’s sensible investing… the get rich slowly plan). • While some people are paralysed with fear of making a mistake, others are overconfident, believing they know what they’re doing. Sometimes they are working on incomplete information (or completely wrong information) that is taking them in the wrong direction. These are some of the things that I’ve found have prevented people from being more financially successful.

A financial adviser can guide you through these hurdles and mental barriers and help you come up with a plan that suits you. At the end of the day, it’s your money and it’s your life, so it is up to you how you choose to handle your finances. If you perhaps feel you haven’t achieved as much as you should have financially, or are unsure of whether or not you are on the right track, then investing in financial advice is something that can pay handsome dividends. One of the common new year’s resolutions people have is to get better with money. If you want to take control of your money in 2024, then book yourself in for a free initial meeting for the new year and find out how a financial plan can make a world of difference to your financial future.

Cheers, Daniel

HISTORYTALKING

Christmas with HELEN MCANULTY

Some years ago I talked with the original oral history group about memories of Christmas. For a little girl Brunhilde, born and brought up in the Black Forest in Germany, it was not Santa Claus, but St Nicholas, who would sort out the good from the bad children when he arrived on December 6.

Dressed in a long gown and a tall hat, he would distribute apples and nuts to the deserving, and administer punishment with a stick of twigs to the unfortunate ones whose behaviour had not been up to scratch. Brunhilde held the Oral History group enthralled with her stories of a very different kind of Christmas. “On the eve of December 25, my father would take me for a walk, and when we came back, I would glimpse a figure in white just disappearing from the room. Legend has it that the Christ-child was delivering presents, but I knew it was really my mother!” About the same time in the hot, dusty little town of Gulargambone, young Margaret’s father, who was the local storekeeper, was loading a bag of small gifts and lollies onto the back of his truck. It was Christmas Eve and, as was his custom, he was distributing presents to the eager little crowd of children who gathered outside his shop. In those difficult days of the Great Depression, it was the only gift that most of them would receive. The early years of the group were shadowed by two major events in the first half of the 20th century: the Great Depression and World War II. This meant that money and goods were in short supply through much of the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. The telephone, radio, film and

“He’s making a list and checking it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town.”

print media were the only means of communication, especially for those in the bush, so the huge advertising campaigns we see today were not nearly as sophisticated or prevalent. Apart from religious celebrations which have remained largely unchanged, the marking of the occasion was often very different in those days. It seems to have been a much simpler time with homemade food, clothes and toys.

“The competition amongst the women to be the best cook was quite fierce,” said Marj. “Many of the ingredients were homegrown and only the best was saved for Christmas.”

were away,” said Rob.

“Later, when I was on the road with stock, it just seemed to pass me by.” Betty remembered the exciting times in the days leading up to the big day. “My mother always welcomed visitors with a piece of Christmas cake. It was said that a slice from 12 different cakes would ensure that you would have 12 happy months the next year.” There seemed to be few Christmas trees in those days, at least in Australia. Kerrel Moor remembered decorating a branch from a gum tree which was a far cry from the trees Brunhilde encountered in the Black Forest in Germany.

“The kids loved it,” she said, “and I’m sure it made them a lot better.” Kerrel, a trained nurse added: “The nurses would walk around the wards, carrying hurricane lamps decorated with the red covers from the bedpans to make them glow, and singing carols.” Of course, there was sadness as Brunhilde told us: “Although we were Swiss, my father was conscripted by the German Army early in the war. My lasting memory of Christmas is looking at his photograph which we put on top of the Christmas tree. We never saw him again.”

There was a lot of planning put into it beforehand.

The presents were mostly handcrafted by mothers and aunts, and fathers as well.

Many of those in our Wontama history group were very small children during the war but still remembered good times at Christmas.

Although the days were hot, everyone cooked and they began about a month before the big day, making Christmas cakes and puddings which were hung from the ceiling in cloths.”

The group remembered calico dolls, golliwogs, china dolls made in Japan before the war, and knitted caps and gloves for winter.

Two-wheeler bicycles seemed to be a very popular Christmas present, especially in wartime when petrol was severely rationed.

Dick agreed: “We always had roast chook, which we never ate during the year. We killed only the old ones because we needed the others for eggs. There was always a bottle of specially pickled vegetables on the table and, as there were eight children to feed, we were allowed to choose only one.” Living on the land was certainly a great advantage when it came to Christmas dinner. ”Up until I was ten, we had really good times at Christmas, with roast turkey but, with the war years, everything changed because so many young men

There were often second-hand bikes or tricycles, but very little was bought new in those troubled times. Yvonne recalled the happiness of visiting her grandparents’ house which was near the harbour in Sydney, and the big family gathering at dinner. And it was hot! “In 1943, the thermometer didn’t go below 110 degrees Fahrenheit all night,” said Russel. “We slept on the lawn under the sprinkler.” People in hospital appreciated the special efforts made by the staff to make it a happy day.

GARDENINGLiFE with CARO WEBSTER

Plants For The Festive Season Christmas and Hanukkah are almost upon us and, for those who observe, it can be busy and joyous but also an expensive time of the year. However, there are several plants that can make your home feel festive and are a cheaper option than many traditional decorations. Some of my favourites include: NSW Christmas Bush: Ceratopetalum gummiferum belongs in the plant family cunoniaceae. This delightful native plant produces red sepals during summer just in time for the festive season. It grows to a tall shrub but, beware, as it can also grow into a tree reaching up to 5m if left to itself. Many people buy them as a small potted plant for table decoration, pop them into their garden after Christmas, only to find that they soon have a large tree to contend with. There is a dwarf variety called ‘Johanna’s Christmas’. You’ll find that our supermarkets and florists will start selling enormous bunches of them soon. Make sure you snip the ends of the branches and change the water regularly to extend their vase life. Hippeastrums: These beautiful bulbous plants are from the amaryllidaceae family and will be appearing in your local nursery now or popping up in cottage gardens throughout the district. In Australia, they flower from December to April and are drought-hardy, although the first frost will cause them to die back in our region. They come in a multitude of colours such as red, pink, orange and yellow. They have strappy leaves (which come after flowering) which look not dissimilar to Agapanthus or Clivea. They make a pretty house decoration but will need to be moved outside after Christmas. They can remain in their pot, requiring a sunny position or light shade with wind protection. Move to a bigger pot every second year, making sure

that the bulb sits proud of the soil. If you decide to plant them into your garden, the same rule applies for the bulb. Keep watered and apply a slow-release fertiliser. They will multiply well if planted in the ground, requiring lifting, separation and replanting every few years. Nearly all bulbs are toxic to the family pet and stock so keep an eye on that. Look for cut blooms in your local florist. Don’t be alarmed if the end of the stem curls, they will still last if you trim and add fresh water. Poinsettia: From the plant family euphorbiacea (known as spurges), Poinsettia hails from Mexico and epitomises festive joy. You’ll find your local nursery or Bunnings overflowing with them now. When small, they make a great table decoration or look lovely dotted around your home. The red ‘petals’ of these plants are bracts and, once they fall, you’ll have a plain green indoor plant on your hands. After Christmas, move them outside until the colder weather starts. Use a slow-release fertiliser and water sporadically when the potting mix feels dry. They abhor wet feet. This is the bonus of the Poinsettia. It will continue to delight you for years if you give it the right amount of love, including potting it up every now and then. It can grow quite large if it’s happy. I’d advise against planting them into your garden as they will be decimated by our frosts. They prefer direct light and a well-drained potting mix but also require a good amount of darkness each day. Give them a go. Cherries: Now is the time for cherries which our wonderful orchardists are currently selling at our local markets and direct from their sheds. They are everywhere and despite a shaky start to the season, they are some of the best I’ve eaten.

MERRY CHRISTMAS We’ve made it to the end of another year. I don’t know about you, but I’m glad that we are here. The excitement and expectation for Christmas Day is palpable. The sight of the covers being pulled off the caravans is adding to the sense of expectation that holidays are now here. School’s out. The holidays have begun. I really love this time of year as everything slows down and people begin to unwind. For myself, I’ve got one more big event to get through (our Christmas Day service) then it’s time to catch up with the family. As I think back on the year that was, it has been filled with ups and downs, adventure and slow grinds. There have been highs and lows, laughter and tears. But it is all coming to an end and very soon we will be in a new year. The new year will bring with it opportunities and challenges and times of change – but that’s for another column. For now, it is time to hang up the stockings, wrap the last presents, pull the meat out of the freezer, pack the car and get ready for the holidays. As we celebrate Christmas, I am looking forward to

42

reflecting once more on the hope that is found in the coming of Jesus into the world. This is the reason for the season and the hope that sustains me, not just at this time of the year, but every day. If you want to come along and hear more of this, you are most welcome to attend our Christmas Day service at Orange Presbyterian Church which starts at 9am. But for now, it’s time to sign off for another year. Thanks so much for following my weekly ramblings each week. I hope and pray that these columns have given you a perspective on life that you perhaps haven’t considered before. It has been a real joy to write these columns and I hope you have enjoyed them too. A big shout out to the team at OCLife for their amazing work at providing this wonderful paper to our great city. DRAUGHT HORSE AT LUCKNOW ORCHARD Duke the draught horse waits patiently while apples are picked at Ken Floyd’s orchard at Lucknow in March 1978. Mr Floyd (right) was at that time one of the few orchardists in the State who still used horses to haul fruit during picking. The other pickers were Ken’s son Ross (in the cart) and Harry Muller. The society holds a working day at Heritage Cottage, 148 March Street, each Wednesday from 10.30am to 4pm, with a lunch break from 12.30-1.30pm. Volunteers are available to answer inquiries at that time.

ORANGE TENPIN BOWLS 39TH ANNUAL AWARDS

Orange Tenpin Bowl finished up its 40th-anniversary competitive season with its long-running OTBA Annual Awards Night. Orange Tenpin Bowl opened in September 1983, and just one year later, in December 1984 they held their first awards night. The awards have been given every year since, although no awards presentation day was held during Covid restrictions. These Awards are presented to bowlers by the Orange Tenpin Bowling Association committee acknowledging their achievements, such as the highest-scoring game or series during the year whilst bowling at the Orange Tenpin Bowl in the league. The Bowler of the Year for each category is chosen with a points system which is awarded to bowlers for participation in a or multiple leagues, bowling in local, regional, state, national or international tournaments with additional points awarded to their placing in these events and points also awarded for representative teams participation. The Bowler with the highest number of points becomes the 2023 Winner in their category. The Most Improved Bowler is awarded to the bowler who has improved the most pins from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. The Most Prestigious Award is given to the recipients for their contribution to the sport and the OTBA members by giving their time, and helping out whenever possible. They are nominated by other members because of their commitment to Bowlers and the Orange Tenpin Bowl and or the OTBA. Congratulations to all the recipients of the 2023 OTBA Annual Awards — you all are so very deserving!

I miss you in the morning And when the sunset fades away, The ache within my heart Just will not go away. My heart fills with love for you When I think, how much you cared, As I relive all the happiness And the joy that we both shared. You’re with me every moment And in every move I make, Lie the memories I have of you That I never will forsake. Love Pam, Allison, Paul, Tania, Mark and their families. Betty, Sid and Denise.

At Peace 18.12.2010

Dad,

As the sun sets and night falls, and the stars twinkle up above … We look for the one that sparkles brighter than them all … And we know that’s where you are. Thinking of you this Christmas.

Nonnenmacher 04.01.72~25.12.90

Your laugh, your smile, a hug a kiss. This is what we really miss. Though a journey you have taken so far away you are always here with us. Dearne, every minute of every day our memories of you will never fade, we love and miss you the same today.

14.12.1945 ~ 18.12.2010

The greatest thing in life is to “love and be loved” Everyone who has loved and lost knows the pain, the emptiness “That always is”. Although it’s been thirteen years our loss is still felt so deeply. There’s no one like you Col - to care so completely, give so freely, teach so gently and to love so deeply. He cared, he gave, he taught and he loved. When we think of all the times we shared, we feel lucky to have had you in our lives. The life of the one we loved is never lost, He lives on through all the lives he touched.

So Missed by all your Family

You will never know the joy it brought us. We see the little gifts you sent us and we smile everytime we see them. Glen, you lived your life for two. You always made us laugh with your constant jokes. Your gentle spirit will remain with us forever. Our only wish for Christmas is you were back here with us. THUMBS

EMAIL: reception@oclife.com.au | FACEBOOK: inbox “orangecitylife” | SMS 0459 022 084 this is a text only number standard SMS rates apply

THUMBS DOWN to the idiot drivers who think they can change into the left-hand lane from the right at the very last minute on Anson Street turning left into Harris Farm Markets’ parking lot. If you’re planning to park there then use your brain and use the left-hand lane at the lights! Don’t go cutting other drivers off and nearly causing a serious accident, especially at this time of the year.

THUMBS UP for the great Christmas lights in the CBD. What a great sight to see as you head down Summer Street and see the festoon lights and fairy lights on the trees. THUMBS UP to Wontama Clancy Western Lodge for the care and service they provide to the people under their care. THUMBS DOWN to the

stinking hot conditions in our local shopping centre, it is extremely unpleasant to shop in right now. Where is the air conditioning? I really feel for the shop workers working in this extreme heat with no air conditioning. THUMBS DOWN to the family members who posted my recent accident on Facebook. I found it to be highly embarrassing and uncalled for. THUMBS DOWN to the

Cabonne Council for the lack of building blocks in Manildra.

THUMBS UP to Orange Public School. An amazing year! Well done to all! An amazing end-of-year concert. So many highlights throughout the year! A wonderful Grandparent Day and Open Gardens Day. So many amazing achievements, academic, musical, dancing and sporting. You are all amazing! THUMBS UP to Isabelle, the hostess on the XPT service from Sydney to Orange on Wednesday, December 6. And to all the rail staff. I can’t fault their service, from booking in Orange to returning on the train from Sydney, everyone was so helpful. THUMBS DOWN to the foolish driver in the City Centre car park on December 5 who can’t park without hitting another person’s car! You have badly damaged my late father’s white Mitsubishi Lancer. He passed away in May, and when we sold it, the car was to be our nest egg. But you have driven off without leaving a note. You shouldn’t hold a driver’s licence anymore. THUMBS DOWN to the branch rubbish along the pathways in Cook Park. This is dangerous. We understand the bad weather has washed away the gravel on the walkways, but surely something could have been done to limit the danger of falls.

THUMBS UP to council for having the courage to decrease the speed limit to 40 km/h in the CBD. If it saves one life it will have been worth it. Numerous pedestrians have been killed in the CBD over the years. Thumbs Down to the hoons who don’t like it… and Thumbs Down to council for not implementing a trade-off by increasing the speed limit on other streets, especially Leeds Parade, Hill St North, Ploughmans Lane, and the Southern Feeder Road to name a few. THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council parking officers who, early in the morning when the streets are very quiet, have nothing better to do than to drive around and issue unsuspecting persons with outrageous, uncalled-for infringements. They do not even have the common decency to speak to the person but drive past, photograph the so-called offending vehicle, and post the fine! What happened to the parking officers of the good old days who did their job on foot? I guess the council has to try to recoup some of the millions of dollars they have wasted on projects such as the Lord’s Place stuff up!

THUMBS UP to Shane at the ELF Community Garden. His commitment tending to the plants and watering them has created a thriving community garden for everyone to enjoy. Thank you.

THUMBS UP to Mikey at Collins, and all the staff, for their enthusiastic customer service. It’s a pleasant place to shop. THUMBS DOWN to

THUMBS UP and thank you very much to the honest lady who found and handed in my watch at Huntley Berry Farm on Sunday. Hope good things come your way.

the young lady who works in the perfume section of a local chemist. I don’t know if you’re always so rude or if I just got you on a bad day, but it wasn’t a good shopping experience.

THUMBS DOWN to the local car wash, where I took my car through and it was still covered in dust when we came out. I won’t be using this car wash again.

THUMBS UP to the very helpful Benjamin at Dan Murphy’s who was able to assist two ladies shopping for presents, both of whom had foolishly forgotten their glasses!

these impatient apes in their big vehicles who fly towards roundabouts without slowing down and giving way to the left and right and blast their horn because someone enters it before them. Slow down and give way to all sides of the roundabout; it’s the rules. (The roundabout sign is a give way sign and not a “speed up and get on it before anyone else” sign).

A BIG THUMBS DOWN

to Orange Central Plaza Centre Management for giving out parking permits to workers in the centre shops. Where do the customers park? Out on the street? THUMBS UP to the guys at Woodward Street Butchers. Best service. Best meat. Good job guys! THUMBS UP to the organisers of ‘Hark! Carols in the Court’ on Saturday evening. A terrific line-up of live artists, plenty of food to choose from, and we were blessed with a perfect evening. Then the film with all the local artists performing really set the night off! THUMBS DOWN to the lack of a working escalator at the City Centre, which makes it very difficult for shoppers.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to

THUMBS UP to Louise and Leah from West Orange Motors. Thank you for your honest and genuine assistance. That is what “customer service” is all about. A HUGE THUMBS DOWN

to the new management of Orange Central Square for cancelling the charity stalls for Huntley Berry Farms and The Lions Club Christmas Stocking in the lead-up to Christmas. They had already been set up for the past four weeks and these charities have been running their stalls at the centre for the past twenty years.

PANIC!

WITH JIM WOODS PANIC – it’s almost Christmas time! What are you planning for this annual celebration… a holiday, a family gettogether? Do we greet Christmas, with an “Oh, no, I’m not ready! Do I have enough food, drinks and gifts?” It’s no wonder this is referred to as the ‘Silly Season’. The reality is, that we make it a ‘silly’ season. The hustle and bustle of planning celebrations, where and what to do, clearly removes any thought of the WHY? The details and busyness of life can overwhelm us and the question of

why we do what we do gets lost. This Christmas, make time to take a meaningful look at the true reason for the season in the birth of Jesus Christ. One place to look is Luke’s gospel chapter 1 in The Bible, where we meet Jesus: the who, what and why of Christmas. My prayer is that as you do, your response may be a mind blowing “AHA!” Realising the reality of God’s amazing love for you! Then keep reading and see that baby became a man who willingly died a cruel death so you can have God’s greatest gift to you, a permanent, loving relationship with him.
