We are now one year on from the devastating flooding event that swept through the communities of Eugowra, Molong, Cudal and others, but its impact is still keenly felt. There are still many people who still haven’t been able to return to their homes and the memory of that terrifying night and its aftermath will remain for some time.

This past week, I ducked over to Molong to chat with local Rozzi Smith, editor of The Molong Express, who shared with me her truly terrifying experience of the flood last year. Rozzi and her partner Paul lost both their home and shopfront to the flood and spent half the night trapped in their kitchen, unable to leave their home due to the force of the water. It is always a privilege when people are willing to entrust me with their stories and not something I take lightly. I hope I’ve done your story justice, Rozzi. Christmas is very rapidly approaching and it seems I see more lights and decorations up every day! The countdown will be well and truly underway after this Saturday when Santa and his reindeer will be making a pre-Yule appearance in Summer Street for the Orange City Centre’s annual ‘Santa’s Arrival Parade’. It all gets underway at 10am, but I’d be sure to get there early to beat the crowd.

Until next week!

Cook Park turns 150!

Orange’s stunning heritage-listed Cook Park will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Saturday, November 25 with a community picnic day.

The 4.5-acre block bordered by Summer, Clinton, Kite and Sampson Streets was proclaimed a park on November 30,1873 and officially named Cook Park, after Captain James Cook, in 1882. The park was laid out in a traditional Victorian-era design with straight paths and rows of trees. Much of the original design is still in place today. All are invited to attend the community picnic which will be held in the park from 10am to noon. The Canobolas Lions Club will be operating a barbecue, there will be a cake cutting, commemorative tree planting and music performances in the bandstand by the Orange Male Voice Choir and the City of Orange Brass Band. You will also find an exhibition in the Endeavour Room of the Bastick Cottage which provides details of the ‘People Who Shaped Cook Park’ along with a slideshow of more than 60 photographs depicting the park over the years. Orange City Life grabbed a camera and took a stroll through Cook Park last week to capture a few images of our beautiful public asset.

Next milestone reached for new affordable residential precinct in city’s east

Free $10 taxi bouncer to get you home safe this festive season Orange workplaces are being urged to make use of a local taxi voucher scheme to send their staff home safely in taxis. The Orange and Cabonne Road Safety Program’s annual taxi voucher scheme is now open for workplaces to register their staff Christmas party and go in the draw for free $10 taxi vouchers. Road Safety Officer Andrea Hamilton-Vaughan said that over the past decade, the scheme has seen about 20,000 get home safely from their work Christmas party. “Every single glass of alcohol affects your driving. It reduces your ability to judge speed and distance, gives the driver a false sense of confidence and there’s an increased tendency to take risks at a time when you have reduced coordination and concentration,” she said.

Orange City Council and NSW Government-owned developer Landcom have now signed a Project Delivery Agreement (PDA) for a new residential housing precinct on the eastern edge of Orange.

set the standard for contemporary new housing estates in Orange,” Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said.

Located alongside Redmond Place, the new 25-hectare precinct will contain at least 300 homes, of which at least 20 per cent will be designated as affordable housing.

“The first step towards delivering affordability is recognising that not everyone needs a 750-squaremetre block with a four-bedroom house… We’ve got a long way to go, but the signing of this PDA shows we’re making steady progress on delivering solutions.”

Council and Landcom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in March this year to explore development opportunities, the PDA outlines the plans and was signed on November 17. The new Redmond Place precinct is expected to contain more than 300 residences in a mix of housing types, ranging from single dwellings on standard-sized blocks to duplexes, townhouses and residential flats. “We want this new housing area to

“The Council has heard loud and clear that housing affordability is the number one issue facing the Orange community.

According to the PDA. Orange City Council will contribute the land for the project, while Landcom will pay for the upfront costs of rezoning and developing the site. As blocks are sold, Council will then share in the profits of the project. Council said the community will be asked to have their say about what’s important to them as the design comes together.

“If workplaces can make a plan to get staff home safely, that can eliminate the possibility of one bad decision that change lives.” Local workplaces can register online to go into the draw for up to ten x $10 taxi vouchers. To register, visit www.orange.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety and click the “Whats your Plan B” tab. Orange-Cabonne Road Safety Officer Andrea Hamilton-Vaughan with Orange Taxi Co-op Director George Witty.

Community Christmas Carols return to the heart of the city on Saturday, December 9, when the Civic Centre North Court will be transformed into a festive wonderland. Performers from the Orange Regional Conservatorium and the Orange Brass Band will again lead the community in song at the Carols event this year and local radio personality Neil Gill will act as MC. And of course, there will be a special visit from Santa for the children.

“It’s a free community event for everyone to enjoy. Let’s come together and make this holiday season truly unforgettable by joining in the singing and listening to our local performers.”

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling also thanked the Taxi Co-op for their contribution to the scheme this year and encouraged businesses to register their end-of-year party.

“We all know how drinking impairs judgement, not only when you’re behind the wheel, but also when you’re deciding whether you’re able to get behind the wheel.

Community Christmas Carols in the North Court, December 9

“After another year that’s been as hectic and busy as ever, this event promises to be a heartwarming celebration of togetherness and holiday spirit,” Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said.

“This annual program has not attracted a government grant this year but I’m delighted the Taxi Co-op of Orange has made the decision to support the safety of the community and fund the program alone.”

“This is a local program that makes a practical difference to community safety and it’s great that the taxi drivers of Orange are pitching in to subsidise the cost of getting local resident home safely,” Cr Hamling said.

Community BRIEFS

Local stallholders will have a range of food and drink options and glowsticks and LED candles will also be available for purchase.

Have your say on detailed designs for Adventure Playground, 4–7pm today! Members of the community are invited to view the detailed designs for the first stage of upgrades to the Orange Adventure Playground at a consultation session today, Thursday, November 23. Consultants Civille Pty Ltd will visit the Adventure Playground to discuss the designs with playground users and interested residents from 4pm to 7pm. Stage one of the project will focus on upgrading the main play areas and central meeting area, as well as the installation of a splash park. It is expected to cost about $1.93 million, which includes a $1.25 million grant from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions program. Council hopes to go out to tender in December to engage a suitably qualified builder to construct the first stage of the new play facility.

“The Community Christmas Carols is a cherished, family-friendly event proudly hosted by Orange City Council. I invite everyone to come along on Saturday, December 9. Bring your family and friends and a passion for singing together,” Cr Hamling said. The Community Christmas Carols will be held from 7pm to 9pm at the Civic Centre North Court, located at the corner of Peisley and March Streets. Families are invited to bring a picnic blanket, or a fold-up chair. The Community Christmas Carols are an alcohol-free event.

The annual Oration named for well-known former Director of Orange Regional Gallery Alan Sisley (1952-2014) and has been a significant forum for ideas and challenges concerning the Arts in the Central West, Friends of the Orange Regional Gallery (FORG) president Richard Walker said. “His impact on the Arts, the Orange Regional Gallery and other regional galleries was significant, and the Oration

In the past, The Oration has attracted audiences from Orange and other centres in the Central West including Dubbo, Parkes, Bathurst, Cowra, and Blayney. Previous speakers have included Edmond Capon, Jane Rutter, John Bell, Julie McCrossin, and Wendy Sharpe. “This year’s speaker is Lisa Havilah, Chief Executive of the Powerhouse Museum. Lisa will outline the concept and intent of the revitalisation of the Powerhouse and how it is embedded in an international redefinition of what museums are and how they are useful to their communities in the 21st century,” Richard said. Half-century celebrations for our local sailing club

T

he Carcoar Dam Sailing Club, one of the few remaining sailing clubs in the central west, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend.

While 2023 marks 50 years of sailing out at Carcoar Dam, the club’s history actually goes back a bit further. It was originally founded in 1960 out at our own Lake Canobolas and was known then as the Orange Sailing and Canoeing Club. But following a 45-boat regatta in December 1970, it was realised the lake was just too small and the club sought a bigger body of water. After approaching the Water Resources Commission, the club was given the “go-ahead” to use the newly opened Carcoar Dam on the Belubula River

and held its first regatta there in March 1973. It was only renamed Carcoar Dam Sailing Club in 1975. The present Commodore of the Carcoar Dam Sailing Club, Adam Bastow, is inviting everyone to join in their 50-year celebrations and take part in an open day this Sunday, November 26. There will be a coffee cart, sausage sizzle, and maybe even a jumping castle for the kids (weather permitting), but Adam is keen to get people out on the water to enjoy a fun day of sailing. “There’ll be numerous boats that visitors can come and jump on and have a little demo sail,” Adam said. “I’m just really trying to encourage families to come out and try sailing and enjoy what the club has to offer — that’s sort of my mission as the Commodore at the moment.

“Back in the ‘70s, recreational weekend sailing was very popular and we’ve seen the general age of the members track upwards over the years, but I’m trying to get families and young people involved because it’s a great recreational activity!” Adam, who lives in Bathurst, took up sailing only five years ago and learnt to sail at the Carcoar Club himself. It’s now a recreational activity he gets to enjoy with his two primary-school-aged children. “I love the harnessing of nature, harnessing the wind power and it’s just peaceful but also exhilarating,” he said. “I want to sail around Australia one day, but at the moment, I’m just enjoying doing a bit of social racing and general sailing with my kids and trying to teach them a skill for life.” The Carcoar Dam Sailing Club is a friendly,

The clubhouse has great facilities and there are always club boats available for members to use, he added. “You don’t actually have to own a boat. You can just come and use club boats as much as you want…. And we’ve also got a bunch of really small kids’ boats that are pretty basic but they’re great to get out on the water and learn on.” The Carcoar Dam Sailing Club is holding an Open Day this Sunday, November 26, from 10am–3pm, 540 Carcoar Dam Road, Carcoar Dam. As there had been no time to turn the power off, it made moving around in parts of the flooded home hazardous. “We couldn’t get out to turn it off at our mains. Paul had walked past where we would normally have something plugged in and said, ‘Don’t go near there, you can feel the electric current in the water’,” says Rozzi.

“We were surrounded and we just couldn’t get out, it just kept coming up and up and up,” continues Rozzi.

“We phoned the emergency number and they said, ‘Can you get out?’ and we said no, the water’s going too fast and it’s too high. ‘Can you get up on the roof?’ I said we’re in our 70s we can’t really do that nor can we go outside to get up on the roof!

“My mother never spoke of water going into the house, except in ‘56, but we never thought there would be anything like we experienced that night.”

“I went out to the laundry room and the water was neckdeep… we decided we couldn’t get out because the water was flowing so fast around the house by that stage. So we sat on the kitchen benches and Paul sat on the kitchen table which were our highest points. Our little dog was with us and

after the flood, Paul and Rozzi are still living in an emergency ‘pod’, a tiny home installed on their property. “We love the pod. We love living up there. It’s up above the flood line, it’s in the treetops, and not much housework to do!” says Rozzie, who has had her own struggle accepting what happened. “I couldn’t go into the house. I couldn’t even go into the front yard until recently… I walked around for months and months and months saying, ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care. It might have been three or four in the morning. The electricity went off and we waded through the house to the bedroom because we just needed to lie down. “Our bed was floating, all our furniture and everything there was floating. The lounge suite, which was a pretty big lounge suite and chairs, were turned upside down. It was just a mess. But we were just exhausted so we went and lay down on the bed, the dog got the only little bit of dry patch in the middle of the bed. As hard as they tried to keep each other awake, Rozzi believes they both drifted off to sleep from exhaustion. “We were so tired and then the morning light came and the people were calling us… we waded outside at probably seven in the morning and the water had started to recede pretty well. We were standing at the front gate. There was no fence around us. People were walking by and we were all talking to each other, but I think we were just stunned. Everyone was stunned. They couldn’t believe that it had happened to that extent.

“But I had a PTSD moment not that long ago. I was just driving with a friend and I suddenly burst into tears… I said I’ve just been lying to myself and everyone saying, ‘It doesn’t matter, I don’t care about losing all that stuff’, but I’m actually heartbroken. That was the first time I acknowledged it,” says Rozzie, who only then went and sought counselling to talk about it. “As country people, you just kind of accept what comes. I’ve got a pretty strong mind and I think I can shut things out pretty well — and I had,” she says. “Moving on was a big thing, but a few little things have happened that have touched my heart a little bit.” One was the discovery of Rozzi’s rings and jewellery in a muddy drawer of a water-damaged desk she had been unable to consign to the tip. The other was finding out that pink petunias and tomato plants washed from her garden had taken seed down by the creek. It was then that Rozzi decided it was time to leave behind what had happened and begin rebuilding the home she had lost.

“I set about digging a metre a day”: Rozzie Smith is slowly reestablishing her garden and bringing life back to her flood-ravaged home

“When I look in the house… it lost meaning for a long time. We had it totally gutted but we couldn’t make a decision on going back: even now going back is pretty scary… “I started thinking if I can just get my hands back in the soil and reestablish my garden, that might be the way to go. So I set about digging a metre a day and I’ve got plants in again,” says Rozzi, as a young King Parrot flies down from the large shade tree above and perches metres away. “I knew I had to surround myself with beauty and touch the soil and come to terms with the dreaded creek down the back,” she continues. “And that’s all good now. We have the platypus there from time to time and the waterfowls and the water rats, and it has become our little community again and very loved, because as kids we were always down the creek swimming, playing, whatever. “So it has really been getting back to the garden, starting with the garden. I think that’s my canvas.”

“Even our little dog, it took him days to get off the lounge, look around and play again.” Recovering from the ordeal has not been easy. Along with their home and possessions, Rozzi and Paul lost their main street business and newspaper office. And shortly after, Paul became sick and suffered a stroke from which he is still recovering. Their home was insured and it will be repaired, but one year

U3A Creative Writing Group Book Launch

On Tuesday, November 14 the U3A Creative Writing group held the annual launch of their book “The Moving Finger” at the Robin Hood. Present were members of the group and guests, including previous members Keith Rawsthorne and Rosemary Curry, and U3A committee members Elizabeth Griffin (President), Penny Todman and Tony Caine. Our group has had a very successful year resulting in the impressive selection of writings showcased in the 2023 “The Moving Finger”. As course leader, I am amazed each week by the quality of topics and interpretations presented in class. Contributions come in a variety of forms: stories, poems, limericks and more, and there is always an atmosphere of anticipation as we wait to hear what everyone has to say. Our sessions are a social experience as well, something else to look forward to. So now at the end of the year, thank you to all the members of our group who have all worked hard and deserve a restful and rewarding holiday break. I look forward to catching up with you again in February, and of course, we are always ready to welcome any new members who would like to join us.

HISTORYTALKING

Memories

with HELEN MCANULTY

A

“Nothing is really lost to us as long as we remember it.” LM Montgomery. Dick was born and has lived here all his life and has a great interest in motor vehicles… not surprising considering that his father owned a service station. He also holds a pilot licence and has taught at TAFE.

t Wontama there is a treasure trove of memories. And on a Sunday afternoon, a new group formed there to remember days gone by.

Peg was born on the family’s large property outside Narromine and is a valued member of the Orange community.

There were about thirty residents of the nursing home who had never really met before but some of whom, we discovered, were connected.

Rhyl grew up in Queensland and came to Orange with her husband who is a vet.

Doreen, who had been a member of the original Oral History Group, sat next to her second cousin, which she discovered only when they began to talk about their lives.

Doreen and Keith farmed outside Forbes and retired here in 2015. They all belong to the original Oral History Group.

Others found people they had known in the past but hadn’t realised that they were in Wontama. At first those taking part talked of their lives, and we discovered that many had been born and grown up in Orange while others had arrived from other places in the Central West. John had grown up in West Wyalong and joined the Agricultural Department, being stationed at Trangie and later settling in Orange.

Then there were those from Wontama. Among them was Margaret whose father had worked on the railway as a “pumper” and, like all railway families, she lived in many country towns during her childhood. “My twin sister and I were born at Balmain hospital in 1930,” she told us. “And my next two brothers and sister were born in Junee, Lithgow and Rylestone. It was when I was in my teens that the family settled in

Orange,” and it was here that Margaret married and brought up her family of two sons and one daughter. Then there was Alex who was born in Germany “near the Alps” in 1946. “My father was in the Polish army and became a POW, ending up in a displaced persons camp where he met my mother. He was multilingual and could speak Polish, German, Russian and Ukrainian. My family are Eastern Slavic people. We were accepted by the Australian people as migrants and we arrived by ship in November 1949 and were sent to Parkes Migrant Centre. My mother gave birth to twins in June but one didn’t survive.” They lived in a camp and her father found work as a fettler and the children attended Spring Hill Public School. Alexandria grew up to become a teacher, training at Bathurst Teachers College. Theirs’ are only two stories but, with the next meeting, I hope to delve into the memories of more and discover that, as LM Mongomery said: “Nothing is lost”. Copyright Helen McAnulty 2023.

I’m calling on the Federal Government and Minister for Infrastructure, Catherine King, to stop cutting regional infrastructure spending and start investing in

the Central West and regional communities around Australia. It’s all very well for the Minister and the Canberra bureaucrats to slash this highway funding, but they are not the ones that have to sit for hours in traffic trying to get into and out of Sydney. They are totally out of touch with what country people are experiencing. I believe all of this infrastructure cash is being funnelled over the Great Dividing Range to be spent on Sydney seats. Axing this project shows that this government does not understand country communities and how important it is to improve key transport links between the city and the bush. This betrayal of our communities won’t be forgotten. REVERSAL DEMANDED I have demanded the urgent reversal of this disgraceful cut and also requested an urgent meeting with the Minister to explain to me how she will be reversing this outrageous decision.

Your Country Your Voice

Andrew GEE MP INDEPENDENT FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE

DON’T BE FOOLED BY FEDERAL FUNDING SLEIGHT OF HAND

I

n the 18 months since the Federal Labor Government came to power, billions of dollars worth of infrastructure funding has been seized from Central Western NSW.

More than $2.07 billion in announced funding for region-building projects has been robbed from our communities by a remorseless Federal Government. Our region has become a piggy bank for the Federal Labor Government to smash open and help themselves to whenever they cry poor. The Great Western Highway funding scandal stands as one of the biggest government snatch and grab jobs in our history. It’s a reverse Robin Hood; stealing from the country to give to the city.

Just when you think they couldn’t get any more brazen, just three days after axing 50 road and rail projects across Australia, including the $2.03 billion Great Western Highway upgrade, the Federal Labor Government was out spruiking new roads funding. They’re trying to cover up what they’ve done to us with spin.

The roads funding program they’d like to distract us with, called Roads to Recovery, isn’t new. In fact, it’s more than two decades old and the much-hyped further funding won’t even become available until after next year’s budget and even then, the full increase to the program won’t come into play until mid-2027.

But our region won’t be fooled by the government’s sleight of hand. The storm and flood disaster hit our communities over a year ago and this money should have been provided by the government as a matter of course. They won’t be getting many pats on the back from our region after being so late with the funding and killing off the Great Western Highway upgrades.

Not only have they callously cut infrastructure projects in our region, like Dixons Long Point, Bathurst’s second racetrack and the Great Western Highway upgrade, the Federal Government would like us to now applaud funding that won’t fully be delivered for another four and a half years. This federal government must take us for fools, pocketing billions from Central West

communities by cutting local infrastructure projects, and then expecting us to turn cartwheels for the scraps they throw us from the table. In their roads funding announcement, the Federal Government had the nerve to boast that they‘re ‘strengthening their commitment to road safety’, just days after binning the desperately needed Great Western Highway upgrade, and also refusing to build the Dixons Long Point project. There was money in the bank for both projects. This is government spin doctoring at its very worst.

EUGOWRA MEDICAL CENTRE RE-OPENING

I

t’s been a significant week for Eugowra, with the anniversary of the storm and flood disaster of November 2022. It was another emotional and very important milestone for the community with the re-opening of the Eugowra Medical Centre named in honour of Diane Smith (Townsend). Diane worked at the rooms for many years and was a passionate advocate for the refurbishment of the centre and medical services for Eugowra. Diane tragically lost her life during the flood last year. She was greatly loved and her loss is deeply felt by Eugowra and across our region. The medical rooms and residence were built by the community in 1965/66 to ensure Eugowra always had access to a doctor. The centre was almost totally

destroyed in the flood of last year. The community, Cabonne Council and the previous federal government came together to fund the renovations. There was a real sense of sorrow at today’s opening but also comfort in knowing that the new medical centre will continue Diane’s vision of first class medical care for her community in a modern centre. She leaves a wonderful legacy for Eugowra.

Medical Centre Committee for all their hard work, all of the builders and of course the Eugowra CWA for providing a lovely morning tea for the community to help make the occasion so special.

The work that has been carried out looks amazing. It’s hard to believe that it’s the same centre that was hit so hard by the flood. A heartfelt thanks to Ray Agustin and the Eugowra

ORANGE EMULATORS CHRISTMAS PARTY!

E

very time I get the call from Murray Reay to lace up the boots for golden oldies rugby with the Orange Emulators my answer is always “I’m too old for this!”. But I didn’t have to give him that answer when he called and told me I should turn up to the Emulators Christmas party! As you’d expect, there was quite a bit of good natured banter helped along by some of the psychedelic shirts that some of the Emulators were sporting! I was honoured (well, kind of) to be presented with the Tough Man Award (it’s a long story really not worth repeating but ask Murray if you see him!). It’s going straight to the pool room! Merry Christmas Emulators! Thanks for the fun and fellowship on 2023!

Killing For Country: A Family Story Author David Marr in conversation at Orange City Library, December 6

A

gripping reckoning with the bloody history of Australia’s frontier wars, David Marr was shocked to discover his forebears served with the Native Police, the most brutal force in Australian history. His new book Killing for Country is the result – a personal history of the Frontier Wars.

Marr brings his experience as an investigative journalist, an award-winning biographer and political analyst to the story of a colonial family that seized hundreds of thousands of acres of land and led Aboriginal troopers into bloody massacres in the most violent years of the Native Police. Killing for Country is a unique history of the making of Australia. A richly detailed and gripping family saga of fortunes made and lost, of politics and power in the colonial world, and the violence let loose by squatters and their London bankers as they began their long war for the possession of this country — a contest still

unresolved in today’s Australia. David Marr has written for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Saturday Paper, The Guardian and The Monthly, and has served as editor of The National Times, reporter for Four Corners and presenter of ABC TV’s Media Watch. His books include Patrick White: A Life, The High Price of Heaven, Dark Victory (with Marian Wilkinson), Panic and six bestselling Quarterly Essays: His Master’s Voice, Power Trip, Political Animal, The Prince, Faction Man and The White Queen. His most recent book is My Country. David Marr will be “in conversation” with Librarian Sean Brady at Orange City Library, 5.30pm Wednesday, December 6. Collins Booksellers, Orange will be supporting the event with book sales and signings. Book your place online online via www.cwl.nsw.gov.au/events or call Orange City Library on 6393 8132.

Watch out, pedestrians about! 40 HIGH PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITY

We have taken the next steps to transition the Orange CBD into a High Pedestrian Activity Area

Over the past few years the Orange central business district has been shifting from a focus on traffic to being more pedestrian friendly. These changes are the next steps in that trend.

New roadside street signs have been installed telling drivers they are entering a High Pedestrian Activity Area where a 40km/h speed limit will be in force.

A textured surface has been added to the road where cars enter the CBD. Cars will feel a gentle vibration when driving over the surface to remind them to slow down and keep an eye out for pedestrians who might be crossing the road, or shoppers who might be more active in this area.

On 1 December the new road signs will be uncovered and the new speed limit will take effect. Visit www.orange.nsw.gov.au/roads for more information

NAZEEM HUSSAIN WRAPS UP BIG YEAR OF LAUGHS AT FACTORY ESPRESSO COMEDY Comedian, radio and television personality Nazeem Hussain is coming back to Factory Espresso Comedy for one night only on Wednesday, December 13, wrapping up a big year of comedy in the Colour City.

“We are super excited to watch this young gun absolutely destroy,” Factory Espresso owner and founder of the popular local comedy nights, Nick Gleeson, said.

Nazeem Hussain has fast become one of the biggest stars of Australian comedy, and a muchloved television and radio personality.

“2023 has been a massive year for Factory Espresso Comedy — Dilruk Jayasinha, Dave Thornton, Anne Edmonds, Lloyd Langford, Lehmo, Dave O’Neil, Joel Creasey, Rhys Nicholson, Justin Hamilton, Tom Gleeson and Peter Helliar!”

Perhaps best known as the creator and star of his TV show, ‘Legally Brown’, which aired for two seasons on SBS in 2013 and 2014 and was nominated for Most Outstanding Comedy at the 2015 Logie Awards. Nazeem’s other TV appearances include The Project, The Full Brazilian (SBS), The Weekly With Charlie Pickering, and ABC’s Q and A alongside Malcolm Turnbull. In 2022, Nazeem embarked on a highly successful national tour with his show, Hussain That?, captivating audiences and selling out venues across the country.

This will be the first time Nazeem has returned to Orange in three years, Nick said and could only squeeze in two shows, one night only, on Wednesday, December 13. “Some comedians are so in demand we can only get them for one night and on a school night, like Hughesy in December 2022,” Nick said. “Nazeem Hussain is the same. He’s busy prepping for his national tour, but he could not resist the chance to perform in front of a crowd he has heard so much about.

In 2023, Nazeem took Hussain That? to Auckland, where he performed two back-to-back sold-out shows at the renowned Q Theatre.

“So get your mates together and have an early Christmas celebration because Nazeem is coming to town to give us a sneak peek of his 2024 national tour show ‘Total Normal’”

He is currently preparing for his 2024 national tour and will be giving Orange a sneak peek of his new show Totally Normal.

See Nazeem Hussain at Factory Espresso Comedy on Wednesday, December 16. Two shows, 6pm and 8pm. Tickets at www.factoryespresso.com.au

HOME COOKING with RUBEN LOPEZ MESA

Life is bowl of cherries at Christmas If there is something that tells us that Xmas is around the corner, it is our local summer fruit. I absolutely love our local fruit (like I’m sure many of you do, too) and my veggie garden is telling me that peaches, berries, plums and cherries are about to get ready. So today I’d like to talk about one of my favourite family activities in Orange, NSW: cherry picking. If you haven’t experienced the beauty of being under a tree picking stunning seasonal cherries, you may be missing out. In my family, we love picking two buckets: one ready to eat straight away, and another a little bit under-ripe so they last long in the fridge for whenever we catch up with the extended family. Our contribution to those family gatherings is always local products,

celebrating not just where we live, but the incredible privilege of eating fresh fruit from our region. A reader asked me through social media: ‘Where can I pick the best cherries in town?’ I need to be completely honest answering that: I’m not an expert in cherries so I’m going to leave that judgement to the orchardists! However, what I can do is to give you information about the places I know with awesome cherries to pick, based on my own experience: 1. Thornbrook Orchard is a thirdgeneration family-run orchard, which has been growing fruit in the rich volcanic soils of Mount Canobolas since the orchard was established in 1947. Not far from town by car. The fruit is left to ripen on the tree, meaning it is ready to be picked and eaten

straight away! My advice? Go there before visitors from Sydney do! 2. Hillside Harvest is located at Borenore, about 10 minutes from Orange. I love picking fruit over there, and love the family who owns it. Definitely, it is one of my top places to visit with my family. 3. Borrodell Vineyard sits at an altitude of over 1030 metres above sea level, making it one of Australia’s highest vineyards. It produces fruit like apples, cherries, plums, quinces, persimmons, almonds… and even black Perigord truffles! This place was one of my first experiences picking cherries five years ago! 4. Finally Canobolas Cherries, which consistently produce beautiful juicy cherries and have beautiful views of Mount

Canobolas from their gorgeous orchard. As you can see there are many places to pick fruit here in town (and I’m sure there are more that I don’t know). So if you are looking for activities to do with your kids this end of the year, or to bring your extended family when they visit you, fruit picking will be a unique experience that they won’t forget easily. Enjoy the beginning of this festive season by having local and seasonal fruit in your home. My tip today of what to do with all this fruit? Eat it as it is. But, if you would like to really surprise your kids? Try these delicious and natural fruity ice blocks. They are sooo easy to make.

Fruity kid’s ice blocks:

INGREDIENTS: ¾ cup sugar. ¾ cup water.

1 cup cherries (no pit). 500g seedless watermelon (or melon). 2 punnets raspberries (or strawberries). 1 lemon, zest and juice. 1 bunch of mint, to infuse.

METHOD: 1. Combine sugar and boiling water and whisk until sugar dissolves. Add the mint and lime zest, and gently push down to submerge the mint in the sugar syrup. Chill until the sugar syrup has cooled completely. Once cooled, remove the mint and discard. 2. B lend watermelon, cherries, raspberries and lime juice in a food processor or hand blender until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve into a large bowl or jug (discarding solids). Then stir in the sugar syrup. Divide mixture into ice-pop moulds. 3. F reeze for two hours, or until starting to set. Insert Paddle Pop sticks in the centre of the moulds, then freeze for a further five hours or until frozen.

Enjoy! @atableof10 26

Dream Cricket Gala Day Over 110 local school students took part in a special cricket coaching day at Wade Park earlier this month. Organised by local Rotarians the Dream Cricket Gala Day on November 9, was aimed to give primary school-aged children with special needs the opportunity to play cricket, no matter what their level of ability.

Christmas Carols in Molong

“What we are trying to do is develop [student’s] skills, particularly their fine-motor skills, through a range of crickettype activities,” gala day coordinator Murray Peterson said.

Molong Uniting Church invites everyone to come and sing along to their favourite carols on

Dream Cricket was inspired by a similar baseball program in Boston, USA, and has been running in ORange since 2011.

Sunday, December 17, 2,30pm. Gold coin donation in aid of The Flying Padre, an Outreach Programme of the Uniting Church.

“And if you look around the ground you’ll see a bowling-type activity and a fielding activity … all modified so that whatever their level of ability they can achieve a certain amount of skill.”

“It started off in Bowral, at the Bradman Oval in Bowral which is an appropriate place for it to start then it’s moved through Rotary Clubs to every state in Australia,” Murray said “All the Orange Primary Schools are here and students from James Sheehan are actually running the activities. Some of the Rotarians are getting to the age where they don’t necessarily want to chase cricket balls, so the James Sheehan students are running the activities and it’s great for them too.”

GNOO BLAS CLASSIC CAR CLUB inaugural Ladies Car show ‘n’ shine The Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club are holding their inaugural Ladies Car Show ‘n’ Shine on Sunday, December 3. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and whispered “Come to me”

Dad

“Casbo”

With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Forever not keeping the peace. Loved and sorely missed by Mark, Christina, Jake, Kylie & Owen.

“Jim”

What I’d give, if I could say “Hello Dad” in the same old way To hear his voice and see his smile, to sit with him and chat for a while. So if your Father is still here, cherish him with care, for you’ll never know the heartache until you see his empty chair.

Convertible V8 Lexus SC430

25.06.1951 ~ 19.11.2017 May the winds of love blow softly and whisper in your ear “We love you and miss you Bob and wish that you were here”. Deep in our hearts, your life is kept to love and cherish, not forget. No more tomorrows we can share but yesterdays are always there. A silent thought, a secret tear keeps your memory ever near.

In our hearts forever All our love Belinda, Clint and Nicole, Mitch, Ashleigh and Harley, Mia and Kai

THUMBS UP to the Orange Small Schools’ Association (OSSA) and congratulations to everyone involved in the wonderful Orange Small Schools’ Spectacular Performance at the Orange Civic Theatre on November 14–15. It was an amazing showcase of the talent of the students, as well as the work and dedication of the staff, in the small schools in the Orange area. They should all be very proud. THUMBS UP to the drivers in Orange who practise the following road rules: “You must give way to pedestrians crossing the road into which you are turning.” And “You must also give way to pedestrians – even if there is no marked pedestrian crossing – if there is any danger of colliding with them.” TRIPLE THUMBS UP and Thank you to the very kind lady (who was most distressed) who took the trouble to find out where I lived when my cat was run over crossing the road. She could have just left the cat there to be flattened by some inconsiderate person, but she went out of her way to advise me of the distressing event in lower Margaret Street, near the showground. A HUGE THUMBS UP to all staff at OfficeWorks Orange. There is no doubt that all the team are a huge asset to their employer. A special mention to Ryan in the photo section. He was so helpful, patient and respectful in assisting a very “senior” person. Your kindness

was very much appreciated and your family has every reason to feel proud. Thank you Ryan. THUMBS UP to Liz at Officeworks for always giving the greatest service when I get my laminates done. A BIG THUMBS UP to IGA for removing self-serve checkouts and replacing them with customer service and employment for those staff. THUMBS UP to the ladies at Black Pepper for the wonderful fashion parade and morning tea on November 8. A lovely morning. Two happy customers! THUMBS DOWN to Orange RSL Sub-branch and Orange City Council who did not remember to put chairs in Robertson Park for the Remembrance Day ceremony. This meant that men and women veterans, some well into their 90s, had to stand in warm conditions waiting for the ceremony and for the service. Hope this is remembered in future. THUMBS UP to the lovely lady who went out of her way to drive me to my home after I (a WW2 vet) was stranded in the city with no way to get home. I cannot express my thanks too much for her kind action. She is one of a kind! THUMBS UP to Dr Sam Roberts. A wonderful, young surgeon new to our city. Thank you for your expertise, skill and care. Orange is truly lucky to have you working here for us.

A HUGE THUMBS UP and a fond farewell to Luke from Ross Hill Wines. Orange was extremely lucky to have someone of your stature within the region. Your presence and ability as a winemaker will be sorely missed. THUMBS DOWN to the cafe selling Aldi brand items for more than double the price at Aldi. THUMBS UP to Ash at Total Tools, she is such a pleasant person to deal with and very knowledgeable. THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for not having some way to let people know that an area of the botanical gardens has been booked and paid for for a function (in this case a wedding). Could have been a very different outcome if both parties had not been civil as they were.

THUMBS UP A monumental thumbs up to Craig from JR Richards, who made sure to organise for my letter box to be replaced after a mishap happened with a truck upon collection a few weeks ago. THUMBS UP to the owners of the new bakery, Hansel and Gretel. The bakery is gorgeous and the food is receiving great reviews. THUMBS DOWN to inexperienced P platers who cut across people on the road. I don’t know who taught you how to drive, but you are gonna cause a huge accident one day. THUMBS UP A “Happy FIRST Birthday” THUMBS UP to Ashcroft’s IGA on Pym St at Millthorpe. A year of great service to the community and may there be many happy returns! Well done and thank you to Adam and staff.

THUMBS DOWN to the bigoted and racist cartoon on page 44 of this week’s Orange Life. Using old-hat lazy stereotypes to poke ‘fun’ at other cultures has no place in our diverse and multicultural city.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Huss from Starchem Pharmacy for helping a stressed mum sort out medication for my child. So grateful for your patience and assistance.

THUMBS UPFor Inge at Just Cuts Orange; best haircut ever. Inge listened to what I wanted and made a few suggestions as we were discussing options. She is so patient and caring about her clients being happy with the haircuts they receive. Inge is new to Orange and will be a welcome addition to our town, Thanks from one very happy client who will return!

THUMBS DOWN Response to Thumbs Down (October 26) regarding the blue tree in Woodward Street being “another waste of ratepayers money”. The painting of the tree was not completed at the Council’s expense. The painting of the tree and hire of the equipment was a donation of time and equipment by local businesses in collaboration with the Orange Suicide Prevention Network.

To be, or not to be? With Lee Cook Some of you will recognise this title from Hamlet as he contemplates whether life is worth living.

MON-FRI 7.30am - 4.30pm

I recently heard of yet another young man taking his own life, a real problem in Australia these days due to poor mental health. With so many confounders — joblessness, cost of living, climate change, and relationship breakdowns — to many people, it looks as if the sky is falling.

offer any real hope. Two thousand years ago Jesus said, “in the world you will have trouble” and centuries later there is no doubt of the truth of his statement. But Jesus also offered his followers – and us now – hope, when he said, “Take courage, I have overcome the world.” Faith in Jesus gives us hope to go on living in this world. We may not understand what is happening to us, but we can be sure that God loves us. We know he loves us, because Jesus came and died for us. And just as Jesus’ followers learned 2,000 years ago, our hope is not in vain because Jesus came back to life and is watching over us today.
