Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

Hope all our readers get out and make the most of the beautiful weather forecast for this Labour Day long weekend. It looks like it will be a cracker! And what a time to do so with the night markets getting the Orange Wine Festival underway in Robertson Park on Friday night. A great weekend to get out and see what Orange has to offer.

On Sunday, I had the privilege of taking a walk through the Old Errowanbang shearing shed, a truly remarkable old building. There was quite a crowd who ventured out to have a look over the open weekend we’re told and the money raised will help keep the building standing for future generations to enjoy. You’ll find a few photos from the open weekend inside.

Don’t forget that our office here will be closed on Monday, October 2, and that leaves just a day for us to put the magazine together and make our Tuesday evening deadline. So, if you require a classified advertisement, “Fond Memory”, or want to submit a “Thumbs” or notice for “Your Space”, please get it to us before the weekend.

TWO SISTERS, SEVEN DAYS, 3,000 KILOMETRES IN A $1500 VEHICLE BUT ALL FOR ONE GREAT CAUSE!

Sisters Beth Towers and Florence Ovenden are about to set off on an adventure through the heart of Australia, travelling over 3,000 kilometres through the back roads of Queensland and South Australia in a vehicle that’s frankly not up to the job.

Beth and Florence have signed up to take part in the Shitbox Rally 2023 Spring, joining teams from all over Australia as they attempt to drive vehicles purchased for less than $1500 from Port Douglas to Adelaide all to raise money for Cancer Council.

Beth got the idea in her head to enter a rally a few years ago, after seeing another local team take on the challenge.

“I went to a caravan camping show in Orange and Sean from Central West Trailers was actually raising money for the Shitbox Rally back before Covid,” Beth explained. “He had his own beat up Mercedes that

he was going to rally and I’ve sort of been thinking about it since then. Especially after going through Covid… this was a chance to do something a bit different.”

“And Beth’s a bit of a car nut,” Florence added. “I’m not, but it was me that she asked to come along with her.

“And because we’ve had family members that have suffered with cancer: leukaemia, bowel cancer, breast cancer… My grandfather died from cancer of the oesophagus and I’ve had close friends with breast cancer.”

The Shitbox Rally 2023 Spring is due to depart Port Douglas in Far North Queensland on October 14 for the small town of Einasleigh. From there, the rally travels to Winton, Windorah, Birdsville, and then into South Australia and down the Birdsville Track to Marree, Rawnsley Park Station and, finally, Adelaide.

That is if their vehicle makes it that far!

“It does happen that there’s vehicles that don’t make the journey, but we’re hoping,”

Florence said.

It’s all part of the adventure, Beth said.

“For me, one of the things that made me think about this was that it’s cars worth under $1500 dollars going through the middle of Australia on rough roads. It seemed like a challenge and that was the reason to choose this over any other type of rally,” she said.

Beth and Florence are taking part in the rally as “Team Lion King”, the name inspired by the 2001 Holden Commodore station wagon they will be travelling in for the seven days.

“Well, our maiden name is ‘King’ so there’s two Kings driving a ‘Lion’ — that’s essentially where it came from,” Beth explained.

“So then we tried to use the ‘lion theme’ throughout and tried to use orange things as well because we come from Orange.”

Teams entering the Shitbox Rally must raise a minimum of $5,000 to take part, but Beth and Florence set themselves a

$10,000 target – a target they have already topped by nearly $4,000.

They’ve also had a lot of support from local businesses, who’ve helped deck out the car and give it the best chance of arriving in Adelaide.

“The boys here at Speciality Paint Repairs, made me up a ‘bash plate’ to go underneath it, so hopefully they will protect us a little bit,” Beth said.

“And it’s got a couple of unnecessary additions, like the crown around the top and our speakers so we can make lion noises as we go through the little towns.”

The Team Lion King car also features a hand QR code for anyone wanting to help Beth and Florence raise money for the cause. The Shitbox Rally 2023 Spring is just $50,000 shy of its $2 million fundraising target, which is used to fund cancer research projects across Australia.

If you would like to get behind Team Lion King, you can make a donation by visiting spring2023.shitboxrally.com.au/lion-king

Michelle shuts up for a change for a cause!

Michelle Baker’s voice can usually be heard at any given second of the day somewhere in the Big W Orange, but on Thursday, September 21, things were noticeably quieter around the store.

After being challenged by one of the store managers, Michelle agreed to participate in the motor neuron disease fundraiser ‘Shut Up! For MND’, which saw Michelle pledge to not utter a word for six hours. As well as raising money to support people living with motor neuron disease, it is also about drawing attention to the challenges they face. For many people, that is losing their voice and being forced to rely on other forms of communication.

As many of Michelle’s coworkers told OC Life, for her not to speak for six whole hours was a challenge indeed!

“I like to sing, I like to talk; It’s been a big challenge, I

can tell you now!” Michelle said, following her six hours of silence… Well, there was one brief lapse.

“I said three words,” Michelle said, referring to her muttering “I hate photos” in reaction to OC Life pulling out the camera just 10 minutes prior to the end of the challenge, for which she paid a fine in penance.

“I actually didn’t think I’d do it; not talk all day,” Michelle said, seeming genuinely surprised. “But hey, here I am. I said three words and it’s your bloody fault!”

From donations given by passing customers and others submitted online, Michelle exceeded her $1,000 target, raising $1,182 on the day.

While it was all a bit of fun and helped raise money for a worthy charity, Michelle does suspect there may have been another motivation behind her coworkers issuing this challenge.

“I think it was everybody just wanting me to shut up for six hours!” she laughed. “But it is a good cause and not many people know about it, really.”

It’s not too late to donate to Michelle’s fundraiser, just scan the QR code below.

Apprentice of the Year

Cadia’s Caroline Morris was announced as the Apprentice of the Year at the 2023 NSW Training Awards at Town Hall in Sydney on Friday 15 September.

The annual awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of students, trainees, and apprentices in the vocational education and training sector, with finalists representing the best in their field.

Accepting the award for her studies in Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trades at TAFE NSW Orange, Caroline said it was a rewarding feeling to be named the best out of a strong list of nominees.

“I’m in shock, to be honest. It’s such an enormous achievement just to be nominated, so to have received this award alongside my incredibly talented peers is incredibly rewarding.

“School was never my strength and I’ve never had this level of success in anything I’ve dabbled in, so this win is a whole new thing for me. I really threw myself into my TAFE NSW studies and the practical experience –it’s such a great feeling to find something I’m good at and get the opportunity to shine and be recognised for it,” she said.

Caroline, 24, successfully completed a Fitter Machinist trade on-site. Cadia’s General Manager, Mick Dewar, said Caroline’s hard work has had broad impact on the community.

“Caroline’s success with this award reflects her hard work and commitment to continuous learning. Her dedication and skill development sets Caroline apart as an exceptional apprentice who is making valuable contributions to the broader Newcrest team and our community,” Mr Dewar said.

TAFE NSW Chief Delivery O cer Janet Schorer said the competition was strong, with TAFE NSW finalists representing a range of in-demand industries providing critical services to NSW communities.

“Winning a NSW Training Award is an outstanding achievement, and it’s significant that many of our winners are from regional communities,” said Ms Schorer.

“In the Central West region, the mining industry is five times larger than the whole of NSW, accounting for 6% of the local workforce.

“Caroline is an example of the high-quality graduates TAFE NSW is training to meet skills demand now and into the future.”

WANT TO DONATE YOUR ART?

Anyone can donate artworks, whether you are a professional, amateur, novice or emerging artist.

Artwork size is limited to A4 (21 x 29.7cm) or smaller and must be unsigned and unframed, but with the artist’s name and contact details on the back. Artwork must be delivered to the Orange Regional Gallery before October 6.

All donated artworks will be sold for $100 each, with all proceeds going towards future acquisitions for the Orange Regional Gallery collection. Register your artwork donation by forghiddentreasures@gmail.comemailing:

“Incognito” art sale growing our gallery’s collection

‘Hidden Treasures’, the Friends of the Orange Regional Gallery’s (FORG) fundraising art sale is back on October 13-14, o ering art lovers the chance to snap up some real gems from local artists.

First held in 2022, ‘Hidden Treasures’ is an art sale based on the format of the Incognito Art Show. Unsigned works are donated for sale, and then each anonymous artwork is o ered at the set price of $100.

“They’re unsigned work. You don’t know who’s actually the artist until you pull it o the wall, but there could be a significant artist or two amongst them because we’ve got quite a few local artists of some note that have contributed works to this,” FORG president Richard Walker said.

Among the artists that have pledged to donate work are: Katrina Collins, Mary Donnelly, Amanda Holman, Libby Hackett, Andrew Ja ray, Jane Tonks, Kezz Brett, Ralph Tikepae, and Janine Allman.

“The back of it will be signed by the artist, so as I said there could be something by someone who’s quite

significant… and you could get something that’s done by a school kid as well, but that’s the luck of the draw.”

For those wanting the first look at what’s on o er, there is a ticketed preview of the exhibition on Friday, October 13. All available works will be shown by video giving people a chance to note their favourites prior to the sale.

“The works will be displayed on a big screen and people can have a look at those as they have a drink and a nibble. If they see a particular work they like on that screen, they can write the number down,” Richard explained.

“But as soon as the door opens, if they like a particular work, they just take it o the wall or take the note of which one it is, go to the counter and pay for it.”

With more artwork than can be displayed in the exhibition space, each piece will be replaced as it is sold, he said.

The sale will then continue on Saturday, October 14, which also coincides with the Farmers Market held in the North Court on that day.

Last year’s inaugural sale was a great success, Richard said, with most of the 170 works donated sold.

‘Hidden Treasures’ is the major fundraising project for FORG, whose purpose is to fund the acquisition of significant works of art for the Orange Regional Gallery Collection.

“Over the last 10 years or so we’ve raised and spent nearly a quarter of a million dollars on works for the gallery, at least a dozen or 15 significant works,” Richard said. “We as the Friends are constantly working to try and think about ideas to raise funds and this ‘Hidden Treasures’ event has been quite successful.”

The opening night celebration and presale of the ‘Hidden Treasures’ art sale gets underway at 5.30pm, Friday, October 13, at the Orange Regional Gallery. Book your tickets via Eventbrite.

The ‘Hidden Treasures’ art sale continues on Saturday, October 14, from 9am–3pm.

Local tennis star Helen Worland will depart Australia for Mallorca, Spain, next week to compete as part of the Australian team at the 2023 ITF Masters Tour World Championships.

For 73-year-old Helen, this will be the 20th time she has been selected to represent Australia in a career stretching back more than half a century.

Helen first began playing tennis around age seven: “It was just something everybody did,” she said of her childhood growing up in Canberra.

As a promising player at 16, she made the move to Melbourne, where she was coached by Keith Rogers, who

Helen Worland takes the court in Australian colours for the 20th time

also trained former world number one Margaret Court.

“So I had the best of coaching and it was gym work, which wasn’t heard of in those days – gym work and running and everything that went with it.”

Helen made it to the second round of the Australian Open singles three times and was a doubles quarterfinalist in 1969.

In 1970, at just 19 years of age, Helen competed at Wimbledon, making a doubles main draw appearance as well as the third qualifying round in the singles. She went on to compete on the European professional circuit.

But even after 50 years of high-level competitive tennis, Helen said it is still a thrill to represent your country

SECURING HOUSING FUNDING FOR THE BUSH

The Central West of New South Wales is a wonderful place to live, so much so that we are seeing year on year growth to our population and the great tree change still in full force. But with a rising population comes rising pressure on housing.

In a recent report completed by Shelter NSW, it was determined that 31% of low-income households in the Cabonne area are experiencing mortgage stress, while 42% are experiencing rental stress.

Residents across the region are frequently contacting me to indicate just how difficult it is to find a place to live in our area, or with innovative proposals to address the housing crisis.

That’s why recently in Parliament, I spoke in support of the National Housing Finance And Investment Corporation Amendment (Unlocking

Regional Housing) Bill 2023. This is a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Independent Member for Indi, Helen Haines.

It aims to ensure that the National Housing Infrastructure Facility, which funds new social or affordable housing, would distribute at least 30% of its funds to regional, rural and remote Australia. That would mean the regions would receive funding in proportion to our population. The people of regional Australia need help, and your postcode or socioeconomic status should not determine whether you have access to safe, secure and affordable housing.

The proposal would bring us one step closer to bridging that great divide between cities and the bush. I hope all MPs support it.

A glimpse of the past at Old Errowanbang

There was dust in the air and plenty of hustle and bustle in the paddocks of Old Errowangbang on the weekend but it was people, not sheep that were being herded through the magnificent historic woolshed doors.

The 138-year-old heritage-listed shearing shed at Old Eurowabang is one of the largest ever built in the region and arguably the most unique wool shed in all of Australia.

Built on the side of a hill, the shed consists of four long wings linked in the centre by the main shearing floor of 40 stands. It has the capacity to hold 4,000 sheep on the grating and is the only known indoor plunge dip in Australia.

Old Errowanbang owner Jann Harries threw open the farm gates over the weekend (September 23–24), holding the first public open days on the property in almost a decade. And people flocked in droves for the chance to explore this unique piece of Australian history, the interest even surprising Jann and her team of volunteers.

“Yeah, it was a lot bigger than what we expected!” Jann said. “It was hard to know what to expect, but on the Saturday I ran out of food by lunchtime so we had to go shopping and we

had to send out an SOS twice to get stocked up again!”

In total, more than 1100 adults paid to get a look inside the Old Eurowabang shed.

“That’s paying adults, kids were free and there were so many children there that who knows the final figure, but around 1100 people over the two days which was awesome,” Jann said.

“And the feedback was so positive, our Facebook page has gone o with people just so amazed at it and thanking us again for preserving the history… The girls on the gate said people stopped and would thank them on the way out saying it’s just fantastic and it was great that it was open.”

But making sure the heritage-listed shed is preserved and around for future generations is not cheap, which is why Jann held the open day.

But with the $10 entry fees, merchandise sales and the proceeds of the barbecue, Jann said they grossed over $19,000 from the weekend, which will be put straight into restumping and other preservation work on the building.

“It’ll be put to good use!” Jann said.

NSW 2023-24 Budget Highlights

The NSW 2023-24 Budget sees a focus on reducing the government's debt with a projected deficit reduction from $10.1 Billion to $7.8 Billion.

KEY ALLOCATIONS FOR THE ORANGE ELECTORATE:

DIGITAL CRIMES

on the Rise:

Alarmingly, we are seeing more criminals boast about their offences on platforms like TikTok & Snapchat. This is not an isolated issue but is prevalent statewide. I've challenged the Attorney General on whether we should adjust s21A of the Crimes Sentencing Procedure Act to make such behaviour a more significant factor during sentencing. We need to address the legality of such content urgently.

Wyangala Dam Wall Raising Project

The NSW Government's decision to halt the Wyangala Dam Wall Raising Project is deeply concerning. This dam is not just a water source but embodies our dedication to our region's future. With droughts on one end and floods on the other, our community faces dual challenges. This project was our pledge to a secure future in terms of agriculture, industry, and household water supply. Without it, questions arise about future planning and environmental sustainability. Our water issues aren't merely practical but also moral, and we must ensure our community's continued well-being.

Addition of 251 school teachers and support staff across the electorate.

Fee relief for 3-year-olds in Long Day Care.

Over 2,300 nursing roles confirmed or introduced for improved hospital staffing.

500 paramedics designated for rural and regional areas.

Pay increases for over 7,000 public workers in our electorate.

$17.5M set aside for roadworks in LGA'sCabonne, Forbes, Orange, and Parkes.

Energy relief for 11,710 households across the electorate.

$298.5M for biosecurity and agriculture, with $13M earmarked for Feral Pig Control.

$100M added to the Regional NSW Housing Infrastructure Fund.

Two major funds have been launched: a $350M Regional Development Trust and a $250M 'Working Regions' fund. These funds mark significant strides for regional development, with the Regional Development Act set for revision. An upcoming issues paper will further allow us and Local Government to shape the Advisory Council and its funding guidelines.

Concerns regarding the Resources for Regions initiative's cessation are noted, but the Regional Development Trust aims for an even distribution, and the Working Regions fund will ensure further regional funding.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

First week of the holidays: highlights

We aren’t going away these holidays, and both hubby and I are working, so I add some fun treats to the groceries. Unfortunately cereal, chips, cheese sticks and ice blocks somehow cost $51, so I turn my attention to finding more writing work. I question if Murdoch turning his empire over to Kendal, I mean Lachlan, is enough to make me break my anti-Newscorp stance. I also wonder if it’s legal to hit up local businesses and o er to do social media/ newsletter/client communication and barter with them for their products. If anyone runs a local cheese stick manufacturing plant, please let me know

Miss 14, spurred by her addiction to TikToks of better pantries than ours, manically reorganises the kitchen, dismantling our tea corner for what she has described as a “smoothie corner” that seems to only consist of our blender, chia seeds and 37 assorted eco straws. She yells at me for asking where the chopping boards are and is now refusing to tell me because I “don’t appreciate her at all”. I’m going to need to buy new chopping boards. I don’t dare ask where the kettle is, and instead search for it after she goes to bed.

During a beautifully educational family bonding game of Celebrity Head: Native Animal edition, Miss Nine takes great delight in making me a humpback whale. Miss 14 immediately embraces the “mean girl” vibe of the game and next turn gives her sister a card reading “Tasmanian devil: Miss Nine’s spirit animal”. Miss Nine demands to know what they are so the game ends when I am asked too many questions about the habitat of an animal I only know from Looney Tunes.

At lunch (which is freshly baked banana bread because they decided last week they don’t eat bananas anymore, so we have seven bananas that I paid 74 cents each for and refuse to throw out), Miss Nine almost knocks her water on the ground. As she yells at me that she’s careful and not knocking anything over, she knocks the $7.50 tub of butter flying o the table. It lands face-down on the carpet.

The girls head o to swimming together, with Miss 14 being bribed with cash to not only take her, but to speak nicely to her when there are witnesses. This is both wonderful and sad: I need to work and I’m incredibly grateful that Miss Nine is still going to Swimming these holidays, but I feel increasingly sad missing out on this stu . This will be her last year of Swimming and – like all working parents – sometimes the balance isn’t quite right for me.

Miss Nine has discovered Minecraft. Minecraft is on the iPad from six years ago when her older sister loved Minecraft. Rather than start her own game, Miss Nine burned down her entire village and sent Miss 14 a screenshot.

Actual highlight: hubby banned Minecraft and watched some Star Wars-thing with them for a few hours. I got to spend an increasingly rare three hours building my Sim; a house on a tropical island. She lives next door to the bar on one side and the library on the other and swims in the ocean every day.

Unhighlight: my game ended abruptly when my Sim was eaten by a shark. I’m going to build her a pool tomorrow.

Vietnamese Gỏi Cuốn (rice paper rolls) are fresh, light and make us feel great. I love eating fresh and clean flavours, especially with dishes full of herbs, texture and flavour. As many of you know, school holidays are here and that is why I’m sharing this family-friendly recipe, perfect to do with kids, have fun and make them eat something delicious too.

There are many versions of it and room for creativity, but I personally love the ones packed with juicy prawns, vermicelli noodles, crisp lettuces, heaps of fresh veggies and aromatic herbs. They’re perfect as a light snack or healthy spring lunch or dinner.

I went to speak to our local Vietnamese legend Trang Le, a powerhouse chef who showcases her heritage in Orange (and beyond). Her energy and passion are electrifying! We are very, very lucky to count her as a local in this town.

I asked her about this dish when I first met her and she told me all about the di erent projects and sauces she has (I knew straight away I was with a local businesswoman to look up to and admire).

A few weeks ago I went to ICC in Sydney (the biggest Hospitality event in Australia) and realised she was there proudly showcasing her heritage and food at a national level and putting Orange on the map.

All those reasons were enough for me to introduce you to her cuisine and share with you the easiest way to eat Vietnamese at home. I love making paper rolls with my daughter and see her interacting with food. Seeing her selecting all the ingredients one by one, placing them strategically and enjoying the thrilling moment of rolling it with her hands.

I love learning about other cultures and flavours. And, yep, I must confess that Vietnamese food has been my biggest discovery since I lived overseas. How lucky we are having such a diverse group of talented people in town! Local Vietnamese flavours anyone? Yes please!

Give it a try, you and your family will love it.

Ingredients

12 x rice paper roll wrappers.

12 x cooked prawns, peeled and deveined.

200g dried vermicelli noodles.

1/2 lettuce (oak or iceberg lettuce).

Small carrot, chopped thinly.

1 x cucumber, chopped thinly.

Trang Hue’s Hoisin Sauce (local ingredient).

METHOD:

Cook the noodles in boiling water for five minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water.

Peel the cooked prawns, deveined and cut in half.

Julienne the carrot. Cut the cucumbers into quarters (lengthways) and then deseed with a knife, cut into thin strips.

Fill a larger bowl with cold water: dip the rice paper wrappers into the water for one second then take out. Place it on a plate gently.

Put all the ingredients you choose inside of the paper wrapper. Fold both sides in and roll it.

Serve the rice paper rolls with our local Hoisin Sauce. Enjoy!

FEAST DAY AT ST MARY’S

Orange’s Catholic community came together for a very special occasion on Sunday, September 17, to honour the Virgin Mary.

It is an important day for all of us and a feast day is held in order to honour her and have some family fun. The Virgin Mary has many, many devotees in Orange and around the world and we really hope this continues to get bigger every year.

Alf Lo Faro bought the statue and built the float that holds a statue of the Virgin Mary, which is housed at St Mary’s Church. Every year after mass, it is pushed in a procession from St Mary’s church by parishioners to the St Mary’s School hall, with the rosary being said on the way. When all the religious side of things is over, the festivities begin.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of religious beliefs, to have a fun day with sausage sandwiches, pasta, tea, co ee, games, music and jumping castles. We hope to try to make it bigger and better next year. We are always on the lookout for anything we can add to our day in the way of attractions.

We really hope that, after the three-year break during COVID, this will continue to be a feast day for a long time to come.

Special thanks go to all those who helped make the day possible and volunteered their time and energy. We just couldn’t do it without you!

We would also like to thank Father Greg for his support of our beautiful feast day.

THE robus

NOTES with Keith Rawsthorne

Welcome to spring; the Colour City is blooming, so go for a stroll and enjoy the pleasure of the scenery.

It’s been quiet in Probus but there are good things coming up.

Australia Fair Grand Concert Street Organ joins massive multicultural festival line-up at Stuart Town

It’s billed as the finest travelling organ of its type to have ever come to Australia and the only place to see it will be the Stuart Town Multicultural Festival this Sunday, October 1.

The Australia Fair Grand Concert Street Organ was built in the workshops of Verbeeck’s Organ Works (Est 1884) in Antwerp, Belgium and is the only travelling Concert Organ in Australia.

Said to play “the Happiest Music on Earth”, experiencing this unique instrument in person at the Stuart Town Multicultural Festival will no doubt stay in your memory for many years.

And this is in addition to a jam packed program of music, food and entertainment from around the world. There will be dancing in the street, a wide range of market stalls, helicopter joy rides, plus activities for kids!

The Stuart Town Multicultural Festival takes place on Sunday, October 1, from 9am to 4pm.

The entry Fee is only $2 with kids under 5 free. Please bring cash as there are no ATMs.

On October 11 we are having a special Probus lunch to celebrate Probus Month. We have invited the three Probus Clubs in Orange and also Molong and Blayney, with about a hundred booked in already.

It will be a great opportunity to share the FUN, FRIENDSHIP and FELLOWSHIP of Probus. Place: Orange Services Memorial Club in the Coral Sea Room at twelve o’clock. Cost is $48 p.p or $96 if you bring your wife or girlfriend, but don’t bring both. Expect an interesting guest speaker.

Our next excursion is to the Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow on November 18. The bus will leave Orange Railway at 8am, with morning tea before boarding the Zig Zag, then lunch (at your own expense) at the Lithgow Workies Club. The cost of $57.50 includes the bus and the train fares. We will have our own carriage on the train.

Sylvia Cleary stepped up at short notice and gave an enthusiastic report on her work experience with Leightons when they planned, built, and ran the Star Casino. She insisted there was no dodgy dealings or

money laundering in her time there. Her major role was personnel and she planned many ways to keep sta happy and keen. A sta party had to last 24 hours to include all the three shifts of workers.

Our next speaker will be Vanessa Gaynor from the Seniors Gymnasium who will help us with maintaining fitness as we age.

We fear some members are missing Probus meetings because of transport di culties. If this is your situation, let us know… there are plenty of members that are happy to give you a lift.

Finally, Samuel Johnson said: “A man should keep his friendship in constant repair.”

LIFEandTIMES with

ANGUS GIBB

PROJECTS:

I am currently in the middle of a woodworking project that is reminding me how much I wished I had paid more attention in high school. I really enjoy playing around with timber. I am not very skilled as a craftsman, but I do enjoy it. I was given some beautiful old lengths of timber that had come out of an old shearing shed, and I often find myself just thinking about the stories that could be told from these blocks of wood. There are times when I’m sanding back the old weathered exterior, that I catch my breath at the beautiful grain and colour of these timbers. To be able to give these pieces of wood a new lease on life, rather than being thrown on the bonfire, is special. While I know that what I put together may be a little rough, it is nice to think that the story of these pieces of wood lives on. My problem however is that – no matter what I try and make – the execution is never the same as how I have perceived the concept in my mind. The two largest factors that contribute to this are my lack of skill and my tools. When I was growing up, I would often help dad build various structures around the house: the chicken shed, retaining walls, the new shelving in the shed and many more. But my dad had a particular philosophy when it came to woodwork: just slap it together. His toolkit consisted of a hammer, a chainsaw and a spirit level. He would also often remark that his style was that of ‘bush

carpentry’ which was basically saying, It doesn’t matter if it isn’t neat, as long as it works. But he is also a very creative and talented guy who wouldn’t show just how good he actually was at this. And, I must admit, that this is my approach to woodworking too: just slap it together, even if it isn’t neat. Behind all this however, is a love of creating. This is something that is so intrinsic to our experience as humans. We love being able to make things. To create pieces of art, music, furniture, beauty and food. We love to leave our mark on a room with decorative touches. We pour energy into turning a patch of dirt into a micro-Eden of beauty and productivity. Every culture in human history has been committed to the act of creating beauty, pieces of equipment to assist them, music and art. It is part of what makes us who we are. As a Christian, I see this as the way in which we reflect the God who made us. The act of creating is a good endeavour. And one that we should cherish. But as we do this, we can think about what it says about who we are and who is behind it all as the loving, good and creative God who has given us so much. So, as you get to work these school holidays and start ticking o the pre-summer list of projects, perhaps you may like to think about the act of creativity and what it says about who we are and the God who made us.

THUMBS UP to the refurbished Lords Place. It is pedestrian-friendly and fresh. Now that the warmer weather is here it’s great to see people enjoying the outdoor seating.

THUMBS UP to the person who asked why no footpath opposite Bowen School in Park Street. The question has been asked before, after the rest of Park Street was provided with concrete paving 18 months ago and no answer was given.

THUMBS DOWN to those who constantly complain about rates and taxes. Yes, it would be nice if it weren’t so expensive, but if people are complaining about potholes and walkways, as well as taxes, then it’s just not going to work.

HUGE THUMBS UP to the incredible sta at Larder and Home in Lucknow. Never seen a cafe where the sta are so caring and thoughtful. I had lunch out there with my mum last week and the food was amazing, the service out of this world and the atmosphere like I’ve not seen before.10 out of 10!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange Council. Still waiting to hear if they spent ratepayers’ money on a federal campaign. The question was asked by the former mayor Reg Kidd on TV some weeks back. I, as a ratepayer, strongly object to the council using our money on a campaign that is not local government business. If so, I say the money should be returned by the councillors from their generous allowance.

THUMBS UP to the customer service team at Newey’s Dry Cleaners. Always a brilliant smile and great service, thanks!

THUMBS UP to Dr Lui and his amazing sta at the Orange Eye Clinic for the fantastic care they showed me for my recent eye surgeries.

THUMBS DOWN to ignorant motorists with extremely loud, eardeafening car exhausts… and thumbs down to the police for not booking them!

A BIG BROWN SMELLY THUMBS DOWN to the person bringing their large dog along Edward Street/ Kite Street so it can poo out in the community every day, rather than having to pick it up themselves.

THUMBS DOWN to the Orange City Council for now charging fees for “hiring” Cook Park! Our City of Orange Brass Band now has to pay a fee for providing free monthly concerts from October to April in the park for the benefit of Orange residents. According to Council: “The fees have been adopted as a resolution under council and under legislation we have to charge them.”

THUMBS UP to Dr Hazelton and sta , Dr Singh and sta , Dr Kelly and palliative care team members, district nurses, and all the medical team at Orange Health Service and UnitingCare for taking care of our beautiful mum, nan and great-grandmother, Florence Gleeson. Thanks for the beautiful flowers, cards and messages that we received from all of her family.

THUMBS DOWN to whoever is responsible for leaving the ‘Roadworks 60’ signs at the eastern approach to Orange. I haven’t seen any roadworks or workers there travelling the route for more than 12 months.

BIG THUMBS UP to Michelle at Westpac Bank for all her help after my savings account was hacked. She was so kind and helpful in sorting everything out for me. It was a di cult situation for me but Michelle went above and beyond in fixing it all for me.

THUMBS DOWN to the parking situation at Orange Airport. There’s no parking for the public or sta but the rental car companies take at least 25 spaces.

THUMBS DOWN to the handling of Lords Place redevelopment. Businesses have been a ected with less parking spaces and there could have been a better use of ratepayers’ money!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council: how long does it take to upgrade the two strips of grass at Lake Canobolas? And how about reopening the toilet block? Someone needs to be held accountable.

THUMBS DOWN to Service NSW. There are 11 counters and only four people working behind them. Their sense of urgency is non-existent. It’s one hour of my life I’ll never get back and I still haven’t gotten my problem resolved.

THUMBS UP to the James Sheahan teacher Gabrielle Logan. She takes the time to connect with her students and creates an enjoyable classroom.

BIG THUMBS UP and thank you to the sta at the Molong Road Vet Clinic for the love and attention you gave to our little dog Rosie, prior to her passing. You were all absolutely wonderful.

His most tremendous creation!

WITH JILL BRODIE

Have you ever wondered what God thinks is the most marvellous creation? He is the Creator, right? Surely, he has a favourite. One that he is the proudest of. I’m an artist and sometimes I get a bit chu ed by my own drawings or paintings. I remember years ago doing a pastel portrait of a famous actor and was blown away by the likeness I had captured.

Do you think God looks at Niagara Falls and pats himself on the back? Or marvels at the Maldives

and smiles? Maybe it is an amazing sunset or the universe in all of its splendour.

I know of a teacher who brought in a box and told her students that inside was a photo of her favourite student and then invited each child to look inside the box. And when each student peered inside the teacher’s box, they saw a mirror.

The Bible tells us in Exodus chapter 19:5 that God has an answer to this question (paraphrased): “The whole world is mine but you are my most treasured possession!”.

Remember that next time you marvel at creation. His answer is, “YOU!”.
