Congratulations and thanks to all the volunteer coaches and committee members of the Orange Ex-Services’ Soccer Club for a well-run presentation day and season in general. See locally filmed wartime series on the big screen ahead of TV debut

Orange residents have the opportunity to have a sneak peek at the first three episodes of the locally filmed wartime drama series While The Men Are Away ahead of its television debut on September 27.

The eight-episode SBS Original was created and produced by local Orange production company Arcadia, and shot at locations across Orange, Millthorpe and Carcoar, including the beautiful heritage estate of “Ammerdown”, the iconic main street of Millthorpe and the idyllic “Rose Orchard”. An irreverent, wry and witty reimagining of 1940s Australia, While The Men Are Away

tells the story of the women left at home during World War II, while the men are fighting on the front lines.

And Orange gets the chance to see it first! Arcadia, in partnership with Orange Open Air, is hosting the Australian premiere of the series under the stars at See Saw Wines on Sunday, 24 September.

The screening will be free of charge and open to anyone over the age of 15. It’s a way to thank the community for their contributions to the series, on-screen and behind the scenes, said producer Lisa Shaunessy.

“It’ll be a great night. I really hope everyone will come because there’s been so much support… it wasn’t just extras, we had a lot of

people who own and have lovingly restored vintage cars, who were on set for days driving their vehicles around for us.

“We shut down the main street of Millthorpe for five days... So there was a lot of support and little pockets of support that you would never think about.

“Ever cafe lent us some space at the back to store things… venues like See Saw, the Union Bank, the Agrestic Grocer opened up for us to do events, they were just all really generous. So many things!”

Since relocating to Orange three years ago, Arcadia have been looking out for opportunities to bring productions to the region, but While the Men Are Away was their first time actually filming in the central west. “We’re always looking to try and bring anything we can out here,” Lisa said. “It’s certainly a consideration when we are picking up projects. Obviously, not everything can be shot here, but we do a bunch of postproduction here.”

Almost all the post-production for While the Men Are Away was done in Orange as well as post-production on Arcadia’s previous films In Vitro, 2067, and the ACTA Award nominated Sissy

And Lisa is positive about the future of building a regional film industry.

“So we’ve done a lot of film work out here and it would be great to build a hub,” Lisa said. “The longer we’ve been here, we’re meeting more and more people who are involved in the film industry in some kind of way… and we definitely have a lot of interest from filmmakers, especially in New South Wales who go, okay, now there is a possibility of shooting regionally.

“During Covid, so many talented people moved out of the city and I think it’s really just about how do we start to generate awareness around being able to work together from this whole central west region.

“I know there’s a lot of filmmakers in the Blue Mountains and some really significant producers have moved into Portland, so there

definitely can be more activity out here.”

While The Men Are Away may not yet have aired, but Arcadia is already busy preparing for its next production.

“We’ve optioned Maggie Beer and Stephanie Alexander’s Tuscan Cookbook, which is a cookbook that they wrote after they ran the cooking school in Tuscany in 1997,” Lisa explained.

“Stephanie also wrote and published journals in the same year, so we’ve optioned those two books and we’re working with Maggie and Stephanie to create a movie about those cooking schools and that time in their lives, which is really exciting!”

While the Arcadia team hope to be heading to Tuscany for some of the filming, they will also be looking for a few locations closer to home.

“So if you know anybody that’s got farms that look like the rolling hills of Tuscany please give us a call!”

The Australian premiere of While The Men Are Away will take place under the stars at the See Saw Wines cellar door, 42 Lake Canobolas Road Nashdale, on Sunday, 24 September.

Gates open at 6pm. Arancia will be selling their wood fire pizza and See Saw wines will be available to purchase from the bar.

The screening will commence at 7pm with a short introduction by the creator Alexandra Burke, director Elissa Down (The Black Balloon), head writer and co-creator Kim Wilson (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Deadloch), and producer Lisa Shaunessy. The first three episodes (26 minutes each) of the series will be shown.

Please BYO chairs and rugs. Strictly No BYO of other food and drink is allowed.

While The Men Are Away, will premiere on SBS on Wednesday, September 27. All eight, thirty-minute episodes will also be available to stream free on SBS On Demand, with double episodes to air at 8.30pm on SBS each Wednesday.

TOOT KEEGAN HONOURED FOR LIFELONG DEDICATION TO ORANGE NETBALL

The Orange Netball Association has surprised longserving volunteer, coach and life member Yvonne “Toot” Keegan by naming a grandstand at the PCYC courts in her honour.

In an emotional dedication ahead of the Division 1 grand final match on Saturday afternoon, friend and fellow life member Pam Ryan paid tribute to Toot, highlighting the incredible input she has had in the lives of so many during the 65 years she has been associated with the Orange Netball Association and many other local sporting clubs.

Toot herself played netball at a state level and has remained an active coach, mentor and committee member with the Association in the decades since.

Toot’s son Ben Keegan spoke on behalf of the family thanking the Orange Netball Association and

Orange City Council.

“I know as we look across at that grandstand we will never see just a name,” he said, following the unveiling of the Toot Kegan Stand.

“Because the name Toot will forever symbolise what is great and what is good in this world.

“To be Toot means to strive to be the best you can be and help others to do the same. To be Toot means to rise above whatever holds you back and never give up. It means to laugh, to be humble, courageous, grateful, and inspirational.

“But most of all to be Toot means to love and love unconditionally. I’m sure if we asked Mum to say a few words right now, she would simply say, ‘I just love youse all!’”

Walk 4 Hope for Huntington’s Disease this Sunday

For the seventh year, Orange is once again hosting the Walk 4 Hope for Huntington’s Disease, aimed at raising awareness and essential funds to support those a ected by the debilitating neurological condition.

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that progressively turns o a person’s ability to think, plan, speak, swallow, and walk.

Each child of a person with HD has a 50 per cent chance of developing it. Onset is typically around 35-50 years of age and currently, there is no cure.

There are around 750 people around NSW and ACT living with Huntington’s Disease, and given the hereditary nature,

another 2,500 are at risk.

The Walk 4 Hope was created in 2014 with the aim to raise both awareness and funds to support families impacted by HD. It’s also an opportunity for people to stand in support and show that people with Huntington’s Disease are not alone in their battle.

This year in Orange, the Walk 4 Hope will begin and end in Robertson Park on Sunday, September 24 and local coordinator Rachael Brooking invites everyone to get involved.

“Each year it’s growing and we’re hoping to get a really great turnout!” Rachael said. Registrations will be taken in Robertson Park from 10am, with the four-kilometre walk departing at 11am.

“We do a lap of the main street and then finish with another lap of the park,” Rachael said.

“And so this year we’ve got a bit of entertainment… We’ve got some young brass players that are going to entertain us, and we’ve got Tribal Fusion dancers… the Orange Pipe Band are going to pipe us out of the park and, on our return, Cameron Sharp is going to be entertaining us while we have our picnic lunch.”

There’ll be a free sausage sizzle put on by the Rotary Club, a co ee van, ra es, and merchandise for sale, Rachael said.. Community fundraising and donations make up over 40 per cent of Huntington’s NSW ACT non-NDIS income and the Walk 4 Hope is a very large part of this.

Rachael said to make sure that you wear comfortable walking shoes, bring bottles of water and money for ra es. You should also bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and appropriate outdoor weather clothing (in case of rain), she added.

Walk 4 Hope for Huntington’s Disease will depart Robertson Park at 11am on Sunday, September 24. Register from 10am on the day or online by scanning the QR code.

“Quick and easy, very user friendly” Bulk Return and Earn depot up and running this November

Getting your hands on a little cash for recyclable bottles and cans will soon be even easier, with a new bulk container return centre set to open in Orange this November.

The NSW Government’s Return and Earn Scheme, which o ers a 10-cent refund for eligible cans, bottles or containers, has been popular in Orange.

But a commonly-heard complaint is the inconvenience of lugging containers to one of the two available collection points and then hand-feeding them into the reverse vending machines one by one.

But the new bulk container return centre now under construction behind Australian Disability Enterprise employer Wangarang Industries in South Orange will make that a thing of the past.

“It’s one of the first greenfield sites,” corporate services and finance manager for Wangarang Industries Scott Lindsay said, looking out over the massive concrete slab being prepared for the new facility.

“We’ve designed it specifically for this purpose as opposed to a lot of the existing ones which have been put into existing buildings. A lot of thought’s gone into the

design, so it should be very user-friendly.”

Once it’s up and running, Scott said vehicles will enter o Forest Road on the southern side of the existing Wangarang facility, drop o their containers, which will be automatically sorted and counted and then have the money electronically transferred to a bank account or nominated charity.

“And then out and straight down there to the road, so it should be quick and easy,” Scott continued.

“We’ll have initially two machines to sort the cans and bottles. They’re big circular-like hoppers which the containers are poured into, they go along a conveyor belt and it’s sorted into glass, plastic and cans… calculates

the number and spits out a receipt and we use that to put it straight to their bank card or transmit overnight to a bank account.”

The new facility will be able to handle 100 cans or a truckload, Scott said.

And Wangarang has plans to schedule regular collections from the surrounding towns and villages.

“We’ll be sending trucks out to outlying towns… a weekly pickup, that sort of thing,” Scott said.

“They go into secure bags with that person’s details on them and brought back here and we transfer the money into their account. So that’s the plan we have, to service the whole area.

“It’s going to employ quite a few of our supported sta as well. They’ll be able to come up here and move bins and help, so in that sense, it’s fulfilling our brief to provide meaningful work for people with disabilities.”

Scott said they hope the facility will be up and running sometime in November.

“It’s supposed to be a hot summer, so we’re anticipating a lot of cans and bottles!”

Salvos’ free brass classes offer more than just music

Just Brass will o er weekly music tutoring for children eight years and up, along with the loan of a brass instrument, absolutely free.

It’s all about ensuring that all children have the opportunity to enjoy making music and reach their full potential, says local Corps O cer, Major Colin Young.

“When I got here just under three years ago, I was very impressed with how many young people had been impacted by the program and were playing music because of the program,” he said.

Just Brass had been running well here

in Orange, but like many other things had ceased due to the outbreaks of the Covid pandemic.

“But we’re at a point where we can restart,” Colin continued. “Now we need young people to come and learn. We don’t charge for anything, the kids are given an instrument, music and the tuition — it’s all free.”

Classes will begin in the next school term and held on Wednesdays from 3.30pm to 5pm.

Students will begin learning either the cornet or baritone, but Colin said he would

be happy to see them progress to other instruments.

“If a child wants to learn tuba, I’ll happily teach a child tuba because not enough kids learn to play the tuba in my book!” he said.

While the lessons are completely free, Colin said they do ask that the participants commit to attending weekly, and to practice four times a week for at least 15 minutes.

For Colin, music has had a big impact on his own life and he’s passionate about being able to give others that gift.

“Music is something that can really add to

a young person’s life. It’s part of my journey. It was getting involved in music that really led to where I am,” he said.

“So, it was a way out for me”. Now we weren’t grindingly poor or anything, but it really helped.

“And there’s a lot of studies that talk about how music helps kids with other subjects as well and simple things like maths and concentration and involvement at school and all that sort of thing.”

Spring Terrace Public School A small school that’s big on learning!

Spring Terrace Public School is a small school that’s big on learning, big on space, and even bigger on heart.

Located just 15 minutes south of Orange, Spring Terrace Public School is currently open for enrollments from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Acting Principal Julie Day is inviting parents to discover how being part of a small school can have a big impact on their child’s development.

“We have three classes which, being smaller than usual, means there is more scope to personalise our teaching and learning programs to ensure we are meeting every child’s educational needs,” Ms Day said. While class sizes may be small one of the attractive things about Spring Terrace Public School is that we have a lot of space, Ms

Day said, gesturing to the school’s tennis and basketball court, expansive lawn areas and the neighbouring farmland that’s home to several camels, ostriches and a braying donkey.

“For those kids wanting to run around, as a lot of kids do, there’s no shortage of room,” she said. “A lot of our kids like digging in the dirt and doing that kind of creative play, which I think is great and they simply don’t have that option at a lot of schools.

“Plus, being a small school our kids have a full range of sporting equipment we allow them to use, so they have a lot of freedom.”

Ms Day said that Spring Terrace Public School is a true community, with parents very much involved in school life.

“We have a very active P and C, they were really engaged in our recent 150th anniversary celebrations and the parents took it on to paint the mural,” she said.

“Our parents run the community garden and we won ribbons for our pumpkins at the Show.

They are very active in getting grants, particularly along the lines of sustainable initiatives like our industrial-sized worm farm that puts all the school’s organic waste to good use… some of our year six boys are really taking that on board.”

And there are more plans in the works to make more use of the school’s outdoor areas, Ms Day said.

But a key feature of Spring Terrace Public School is that children get to know each other and have a real sense of belonging to a school family.

“The small school setting is very inclusive,” Ms Day said. “The students all interact from Kindergarten to Year 6, so no child flies under the radar as they might in a larger school…that is very much a massive feature of this school.

“Our teachers and Student Learning Support O cers, we all work together to make every school day a great day!”

DON’T RISK DIVIDING AUSTRALIANS

Dear Resident,

Our country faces real challenges, including the rising cost of living. Other important issues include national security, crime, housing, energy, infrastructure, education, health and mental health.

The upcoming referendum is also very important.

It is not simply about recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution. That could be done without tying it to a risky Voice.

This Voice proposal would be the biggest change to our Constitution in history. Enshrining in our Constitution a body for one group of Australians means permanently dividing us.

This Voice covers all areas of “Executive Government”. No issue would be beyond its reach.

It risks legal challenges. The High Court would ultimately determine its powers. Some Voice supporters are upfront in saying that this will be a first step to reparations and compensation and other radical changes.

It’s a big decision. However, the Government won’t provide basic details. We don’t know how its members would be chosen or how it would operate. Australians are being asked to vote before these details are worked out. Once it is in the Constitution, it would be permanent. This decision affects all Australians.

If you don’t know, say no.

Regards,

Memori by Ned

Some yarns from the back blocks

On one of my trips into the back blocks of Queensland I experienced an incident that sticks in my memory.

Having a few drinks with a friend at the local hotel I observed a little old ringer, obviously drunk, playing pool with a couple of town boys. They were clearly taking advantage of his condition and were taking money from him. He had lost some dollars when he slurred: he wanted to get his money back, would they play for $50 – all he had on him? The boys jumped at the chance.

My companion turned to me and said, “Watch this”. Our ringer then proceeded to clean the table, staggering and mumbling. He picked up his winnings, sat down at a table in the corner head in hands and appeared to go to sleep. After the boys had left he stood up. I have never seen anyone sober up so fast! As he passed our table my friend said to him, “Nice take, Fred.” Fred replied with a big grin, “Works every time, they never learn.”

Overheard at the pub at Augathella: a fisherman was telling all and sundry of the 30-pound yellowbelly he had caught when another fisherman said, “That’s nothing, last week I pulled out a hurricane lamp

still alight.” To which everyone chorused: “That’s ridiculous”. To which he replied, “Tell you what I’ll do, you knock 20 pounds o the yellowbelly and I’ll blow out the light.”

No yarn is complete without a good dog story. I heard this one at Enngonia. Two drovers with mobs of cattle were converging on Dry Lake Tank from di erent directions at the same time. They decided that, as they had been both dry staging, when the cattle smelled the water they would not be able to hold them. So even if it meant a couple of days drafting them back into their mobs, for the welfare of their cattle they decided not to box

them and let them drink together.

Next morning, after their drover's breakfast (a pee and a whistle) they rode over to the reserve to start work. To their amazement, there were two mobs already drafted, one in each corner of the reserve. One drover said, “Where are my dogs, I can’t go on without them.” After searching for them they found the dogs in a big mud puddle behind the dam. One was holding a Mickey (a young steer) down by the nose and the other was licking the mud o his flanks and checking his brand.

Congratulations and a very warm welcome to our region’s 40 newest Aussie citizens!

A wonderful group, hailing from 14 different countries across the globe, made their pledge in Orange last week!

It was wonderful to say g’day to each conferee and get to learn a little about their story. Wishing you all the very best in this

new chapter!

Thank you to Orange Regional Council for putting on such a fantastic event, and to Megan Woods for her stunning performance of classic Aussie tunes and our national anthem.

The Orange Region Voice Working Group will be hosting online Voice info sessions at 6pm every Tuesday until the referendum. These sessions will include an information session (6-6:45pm) followed by a Q&A (6:45-7:30pm) where you can ask your questions. Feel free to only join for half of the session. With a brutal bushfire season on the cards this summer, the Capertee Valley RFS is better equipped than ever before to tame the flames.

This week, the team received the keys to a state-of-the-art fire truck which will provide critical firefighting and emergency responses that are currently unmet in the wider Capertee, Glen Alice and Ilford communities.

I worked closely with the Capertee and District Progress Association to secure a $500,000 grant to purchase the tanker for the village.

It can hold 9,000 litres of water – that’s enough to fill six to eight fire trucks at a fire front so firefighters won’t need to leave the fireground to refill.

The tanker can also assist local responses to motor vehicle accidents on the Castlereagh Highway which links Mudgee with Lithgow, the Blue Mountains and Sydney.

The handover of the tanker followed Get Ready Weekend, which urged residents to ensure their property is bushfire-safe. To prepare a bushfire plan for your property, visit: www.myfireplan.com.au

I was in Capertee during the 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires. In a nightmare scenario for the close-knit community, the

area was almost completely surrounded by blazes with firies relying on finite tank water to fill vital firefighting trucks.

In the middle of a drought, and with no connection to town water, a small, borrowed water tanker was brought in to assist, but it was unable to traverse the rugged bushland, so RFS crews were forced to leave the unrelenting fireground to refill their fire trucks. Council trucks with plastic tanks could also not be brought close to fires as the tanks could melt.

MOLONG SHOW A SUCCESS!

The Molong community has had a very difficult and devastating year.

Through the heartache, the determination of the community to pick up the pieces and see the town they love so dearly come back stronger has been extraordinary.

Last weekend, it was great to see residents come together for the 159th Molong Show which was packed with people! It was truly a community celebration.

A huge amount of work went into organising

It was great to catch up with Yr 11 Legal Studies students from Kinross Wolaroi during their class excursion to Parliament House recently!

The class asked some great questions, and we had a good chat about what life

is like as an independent in Parliament. With a key housing bill passing the Senate, it was a great opportunity for the students to see the work of the House in action.

All the best with your studies!

this year’s show and making it such a success. Congratulations to the Show Society on a job well done!

One of the highlights of the day was certainly the mega lolly scramble, which brought smiles to the faces of kids collecting the sweets (and fear on the faces on parents preparing for the sugary energy explosion!). The event is sure to become an annual Molong Show institution.

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s show!

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE

What is the Voice?

On the 14th of October this year, Australians will be asked to have their say in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The Voice would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous Australians.

Why is the Voice necessary?

It’s hard to believe, but

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in our nation’s founding document. This wrong must be made right.

The Voice provides that recognition in a meaningful way.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower

Will the Voice have the power of veto over legislation?

No. Myth busted. There is no veto. This means it would have no power to overrule Parliament, and any advice it gives would be non-binding.

Will the Voice be a third chamber of Parliament?

life expectancy, higher suicide rates, higher infant mortality rates, and worse educational outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. The gap isn’t closing, and despite well-intentioned governments, the current approach isn’t working.

In the modern, prosperous Australia of 2023, how can this be acceptable?

We need to change it up. The Voice is about listening and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Australia.

But don’t we already have Indigenous Parliamentarians?

We do, but like governments, individual parliamentarians come and go, and they represent parties. The Voice would be independent and be above partisan party politics. Having it in the Constitution provides independence, consistency, and continuity.

Is the Voice legally and Constitutionally sound?

Yes. A host of constitutional law experts and organisations have given the Voice the tick of approval as being legally and constitutionally sound, including:

• Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French

• Former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne

• Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC

• Leading constitutional law professors

• The Solicitor General of Australia

• New South Wales Bar Association

• The Law Society of New South Wales

• The Law Council of Australia

• The University of Sydney Law School

• Flinders University Law school

• The University of New South Wales

• Adelaide Law School

• University of Queensland constitutional lawyers

• Gilbert & Tobin Lawyers

Will the Voice “gum up” the Federal Government with court challenges and stop budgets, change Anzac Day, take land, ban fishing, stop nuclear-powered submarine contracts or create a seperate state?

No. Myth Busted. The Voice can’t and won’t introduce bills or run programs. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament.

VOICE Q&A

No. Myth busted. Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC has described claims the Voice would lead to endless court challenges and the “gumming up” of the wheels of government as “nonsense” and “too silly for words”. It’s an advisory body that will be subject to the rules Parliament makes for it. It won’t have the power to ban anything. These wild claims are ludicrous.

Who will be on the Voice?

Members of the Voice will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and serve for a fixed period. It will include Indigenous Australians from every state and territory, the Torres Strait Islands and representatives from the regions and remote communities. It will be subject to the rules made for it by Parliament.

Would the Voice stop me digging a hole in my garden or on my farm?

No. Another whacky myth busted. It’s an advisory body folks! The Voice would not be able to force the Parliament to do anything it doesn’t want to do. The veggie garden is quite safe.

Charles Sturt University is supporting an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Isn’t the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) the same as the Voice?

No. Not at all. Myth busted.

Unlike the proposed Voice, the NIAA is not independent of government, it’s part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Only 22% of its staff are Indigenous. It can be abolished at the stroke of a pen. It can’t give advice to the Parliament.

Oh and the NIAA doesn’t have a $30 billion budget (another myth busted there on the way through).

Does the Voice give anyone special rights?

No. Myth busted. The Voice does not give any group any special rights. It’s an advisory body that doesn’t give any rights to anyone. This has been confirmed by eminent constitutional lawyers and former High Court judges.

Why can’t we put the rules of the Voice in the Constitution?

Because our Constitution provides the broad framework for governing our country and we leave it to our elected representatives via the Parliament to pass legislation about details such as rules.

For example, in 1901 the Constitution gave the Australian Government the power to set up a High Court and other courts. It wasn’t until 1903 that Parliament established the High Court through legislation. Then in 1975 the Parliament set up the Family Court through legislation.

Another example is that in 1901 the Constitution gave the Commonwealth the power over currency but left it to the Parliament to work out things like what the notes are and what they look like. In 1910 a law about notes was passed. Banknotes finally got issued in 1913.

The Voice will be set up by the Parliament and subject to its rules.

ODFA’s big Grand Finals Saturday

The big weekend has finally arrived for local junior soccer stars with all the grand finals for Orange and District Junior Football Association (Under 12s–16s) kicking off this Saturday, September 23, at Sir Jack Brabham Park.

Under 16s Grand Final

U16 Championship –Barnstoneworth Rangers vs CYMS Green.

Barnies Rangers go into the Championship decider as favourites after wrapping up the Home & Away Premiership, enjoying an undefeated season with the only dropped points being 2 drawn games. Barnies were also the first team into the Grand Final but CYMS Green have a great Final Series pedigree, consistently working their way through the knockout games and also have the advantage & experience of winning last year’s Grand Final. Therefore, everything points to a close U16 Grand Final, but CYMS probably need the first goal as Barnies are excellent front runners. These two good teams are full of players who know each other very well, with many of them team mates in various Orange Rep teams over the years.

Under 15s Grand Final

Barnstoneworth United vs Waratah Rebels.

Barnstoneworth were Premiership winners of the Home & Away Comp & booked their place in the Championship Final with a win over Millthorpe in the Major Semi Final.

Barnstoneworth have victories over Rebels in the two games this season but in the most recent meeting between the two teams, there was only one goal in it. Any complacency in the Barnies camp, who might have been expecting to face Millthorpe, will be seized upon by the battle-hardened Rebels. In an ominous warning to Barnies, the Rebels had their first season win against Millthorpe last weekend to make a date with Barnies in the Championship decider.

Under 14s Grand Final Cudal vs Barnstoneworth United

This one looks close, from any of the season results that you look at & we might be looking at extra time to find a winner in what should be a classic Championship game.

Its a 1st vs 2nd game where Cudal were the Premiership winners on goal difference ahead of Barnies, but Barnies have the better head to head record with 2 wins, 1 loss & a draw, in their games this season, with one of those wins being the Major Semi Final.

Cudal U14s

Back Row: L-R. Coach Peter Terry, Jacob Petrie, Jackson Hawkins, Jake Mulhall, Riley Townsend, Archie Wright, Ben Burgess, William Gosper, Lincoln Eagleston

Front Row: L-R. Lucy Ward, Zach Gosper, Rebeckah Kearney, Zieke Hunter, Jessica Terry, Whitney Eagleston, Jordan Dean

Front Left – Jenson Dickerson, Isabelle Stedman, Grace Hosie, Declan Miller, Sam Southwell

Absent – Lauchlan Coutts, Simran Dhatt

Under 13s Grand Final Orange Anglican Grammar School (OAGS) vs CYMS Gold

Another 1st vs 2nd game where OAGS were the Premiership winners but CYMS Gold were only one win behind them on the table. All the games this season between the two teams, were close, low scoring affairs.

Combine this with OAGS needing extra time to get a Semi win over a gutsy CYMS, means that there’s not much in this game and will probably come down to which team can take their chances under the pressure of a Grand Final.

Both of these teams know each other well and the tussle continues on Saturday where the results over the rest of the season will count for little if CYMS can get the all-important first goal.

Under 12s Grand Final

Barnstoneworth

United vs Barnstoneworth YADS

If you like goals in your football, this will be the game to watch at 12 noon on Saturday. All 3 games between these teams this season have produced 6 goals, with United winning 2 of the 3. This Grand Final is club mate vs club mate & 1st vs 2nd on the points table, where United were the Premiership winners in a close competition with YADS second only one win behind. This game should bring out a great Barnstoneworth crowd with a chance for the spectators to see the great talent coming through the ranks.

RFS GET READY WEEKEND AT BUNNINGS

With the long range forecast pointing towards a drier and warmer than average summer ahead, it’s time to get ready for fire seasons.

Our local Rural Fire Service members were out in force at Bunnings on Saturday, September 16, with the aim of encouraging residents and landowners to plan and prepare for the bush fire season ahead. While their message is potentially life saving, it didn’t mean a little fun couldn’t be had. kids jumped at the chance to sit in the fire truck and to try a real fire hose!

ORANGE CITY COUNCIL HAS A FUN, ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM COMING UP.

COUNCIL TAKES A STAND AGAINST ABUSE OF ITS WORKERS

Orange City Council has launched a series of videos targeting abuse of its workers and calling for better behaviour across the city and online.

The videos respond to recent incidents when staff were subjected to abuse as they undertook work around the city.

Orange City Council Chief Executive Officer David Waddell believes it is time to take a stand against abuse.

“The vast majority of our local community members treat Council employees with respect and courtesy, but when abuse does happen it can be damaging and should be called out,” Mr Waddell said. “I have a responsibility to provide a safe workplace to all Council staff.

Mr Waddell said there were easy ways to raise issues with Council respectfully and politely.

“Our staff are mothers, fathers and neighbours who live here in Orange too. I assume that the people who are abusive wouldn’t treat their mother or brother this way, but they feel it’s okay to say these things to Council staff. It’s not okay, and I hope this campaign can start to turn attitudes around.”

Orange Deputy Mayor Gerald Power believes Council staff, like all local residents, are entitled to a safe workplace as they go about their daily work, free from abuse.

“I was disappointed to learn that from time to time our staff and councillors have been abused by angry people,” Cr Power said. The Council has made three simple videos focusing on abuse happening at a roadworks site, a Council customer service counter and online.

Along with councils across the state, Orange City Council has also introduced ‘house rules’ to cover its social media channels. The changes are being made in a bid to improve the quality of local debate and protect staff.

The house rules aim is to make “our social media channels a safe place where members of our community can engage in debate and are free to make constructive comments, questions and suggestions.”

“We ask that anyone engaging with our social media channels shows courtesy, kindness and respect for Council, Councillors, Council staff and all other contributors.”

Spring into the school holidays with Orange City Council’s cultural and community facilities.

Orange City Council Services Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell says Council always provides a school holiday program that combines fun, entertainment and learning.

“Orange’s art gallery, museum, library, youth hub and aquatic centre provide a range of programs for the city’s students during the school holidays. Many children look forward to attending our art workshops, special library storytimes or swimming lessons,” Cr McDonell said.

Orange Regional Museum will hold workshops inspired by the digital outdoor installation The Birds of Australia STORYBOX and its exhibitions Inherit and Ribbons, Rides & Ring Events: Agricultural Shows in the Central West.

Orange City Library has been inspired by the arrival of spring, with activities encouraging children to make seed bombs, plant vegetables and paint flower pots, along with popular favourites, holiday storytime, screenprinting and Dungeons and Dragons.

Orange Youth Hub has a busy program with a range of fun activities and day trips planned across the two weeks of the holidays, including cooking, skating, Indigenous games, movie visit and ice skating.

Orange Regional Gallery will host activities inspired by its current exhibitions David Serisier: Here and There, Barney Ellaga: The Last Songman and Here/ Now.

“All the school holiday workshops are really popular, so I encourage everyone to get organised as soon as possible to book their activities and enjoy the spring break,” Cr McDonell said.

Visit Orange City Council’s school holiday events calendar at https://www.orange.nsw. gov.au/school-holidays/ to see what’s available and book your spot. Booking is required for all sessions.

Orange Aquatic Centre will offer intensive learn-to-swim lessons for children in levels 1 to 4. The centre is a multi-accredited swim school with Austswim, Swim Australia and Royal Life Saving qualified swim instructors. To enrol, email aquatic@orange. nsw.gov.au with your name and child’s name as well as your full contact details.

W WORLD IS C COMING O S STUART TOWWN N T

frican dancers, a mariachi band, Chinese dragons, Zimbabwean drummers, and Indigenous performers, the world is coming to Stuart Town on the October Long Weekend, and everyone is invited! Located between Dubbo and Orange on the scenic Burrendong Way, the historic community is throwing itself into its aptly-titled Multicultural Festival, with attendees invited to dress in their national costumes to add colour to this international celebration.

With only a $2 gold coin donation entry, there’ll be something for everyone at the Sunday, October 1 fair, spokesperson, Pam Gough explained.

“We’ll have food from cultures around the world, belly dancers, local country and western performers, dance groups from Indian, Nepalese, and Celtic cultures, Zimbabwean drummers, and more than 100 stalls filling the main street,” Pam said.

“There’s a puppet show, small animal farm, slides, miniature train rides, a merry-go-round, face-painting an art show, and even helicopter joy rides,” she added.

Master of Ceremonies, is Sydney Opera House performer, raconteur, story-teller, and accomplished musician, Simon Busmann.

“There’ll be music all day, buskers, four multicultural dance bands, and the famous RAAF band also performing,” Pam said.

“We’re starting at 9am till 4pm, so people can come and have a great day, and then head home in the evening for the footy (NRL) grand final,” she added.

With entry only a coin donation, and children under five free, bring your cash as whilst most Stall Holders have credit facilities, there are no ATM facilities at the event.

With the inaugural Festival last year overcoming a wet spring to draw a good crowd, this year organisers are expecting up to 5000 visitors to descend on the historic township, whose former name Ironbark, was once immortalised in the Banjo Patterson poem, “The Man from Ironbark”.

Pam said that, the big band sound, was a major success of 2022’s first-ever running of the celebration, and will be so again this year.

“At last year’s inaugural Multicultural Festival, the Royal

Australian Army Band was a hit and organisers, the Stuart Town Action Group Inc, are delighted to advise that they have been able to secure the Royal Australian Air Force Band to be part of this year’s event,” Pam said.

“This will complete an exciting daylong programme of music and activities plus traditional food from around the world and a diverse, interesting range of stalls down the main street and around the recreational ground to the oval,” she said.

The day, she said, is designed to be a celebration of the community of nations that make up our world.

“With all this and more, it’s sure to be a great fun day for all ages and we are hoping that many visitors will come along in their national costumes on the day,” Pam said.

“And all this for only $2 a head with children under five free; so dust-off your comfy shoes and come and share a day of fun and joy with us at Stuart Town on Sunday October 1.

The event is supported by Multicultural NSW, for more information contact Mel Howard on 0434 224 171, or Pam Gough on 6846 8208.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

Week 10. Again

Monday: I leap out of bed ready to nail today. Yesterday I punished Miss 14’s attitude by making her bake with me and as a result we have an incredible assortment of Insta-perfect lunchbox choices. I mean, there’s a zucchini quiche boat with a carrot flag and I’m just absolutely winning at parenting right now. I remember that it’s library day and send Miss Nine to find her books and I still have time to enjoy the warm spring weather and walk her to school.

I post a humble brag to Facebook and include a photo of Miss Nine’s lunch. After I get home I quickly check my post only to see I have zero likes, zero comments and two less friends than before. I message Miss 14 to tell her she’s un-banned from Facebook, and urge her to “check out my cool photo”. Then I sit next to Miss Nine’s library bag that she left on the table and start work.

Tuesday: I drag myself out of bed because today is Book Week dress up day (the worst day of the year). Miss Nine had a last-minute costume change on Friday and is going to be Hermione Granger, along with all of her friends. Yesterday I said she could just wear a black cloak and her (maroon and yellow) school tie, then the Mum guilt hit and I was up until 1am making her a spell book, wand and googling “how to cut a Hermione fringe”. I am sneakily handed a book fair catalogue with 72 books on her wish list. I guess at least she wants to read? I pay $42 for three books and $7 for two sausage sandwiches for the special BBQ lunch. I have a vegemite sandwich at my desk, to save money.

Wednesday: I remember to book holiday intensive swimming lessons only to realise I’ve missed the cheaper lessons with the teacher she knows, and wish I could be an organised person for once. The only lessons available are when both hubby and I are at work. I pay for the lessons then I pay Miss 14 to take her.

I pack sub-par lunches that are the rest of the baked treats, four strawberries, Tiny Teddy snacks, and $1 for the canteen. I don’t take any photos today.

Thursday: Today. It’s suddenly cold? We’ve gone from spring back to winter for a few days apparently. This is great news for Miss Nine who has lost both jumpers, both back-up jumpers, and currently can’t find her back-up, back-up jumper that isn’t the exact right colour but it’s close enough. Eventually she says, “Maybe I left it at swimming last week?” Lunches are stale bread sandwiches and Doritos… and they’re lucky to get that, at this point. I’m late to work and am struggling with this week’s writing assignment: “18 fun ways to enjoy the holidays with your teens and tweens.”

I quickly email my editor to check if it’s meant to be satire or not.

Friyay!: Tomorrow, or today. Maybe yesterday. I don’t know when you’re reading this.

But, if you’re like me, you are juggling end-of-term gettogethers, sports presentations, an assembly at 10.30am that we’re all meant to make, holiday plans and the fact you now have 18 bananas because they “don’t eat bananas anymore” and you’re too poor to throw them out.

You deserve a break, peace, a pay rise and a trophy for surviving Term 3. Rest up xxx

‘What is the most economical dessert ever?’ a costconscious reader asked me the other day. Well, in my opinion it has to be any of the versions of rice pudding.

This is a dessert that crosses continents and you can find it in America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The cool thing is that each country has its own version of it and we all serve it in di erent ways. For example, I love the fact that in Finland it is a Xmas treat, called Joulupuuro, which is served on Boxing Day. One of the bowls served has an almond inside and the tradition says that the person who finds it will have luck in the new year.

There are other regional variations: I absolutely love how Mediterranean countries infuse their milk with citrus and cinnamon; Anglo-Saxon countries usually it’s with vanilla; in the Caribbean they use coconut; and in the Middle East it is with sa ron and in India they use cardamom.

For me, this is the beauty of cooking! The same recipe conceptually, but tailoring it to the local likes or dislikes, products available, etc.

I remember as a kid, that I absolutely LOVED the Spanish version called arroz con leche. When I was little I thought my mum was some type of magician, because she was able to make a delicious savoury rice one day, and an incredible sweet with rice the next. Obviously, when I grew up I realised that we were a very humble family and that my mum was trying to o er us a special treat without having to break her weekly budget.

The interesting thing is that for some people, this was a peasant dish and saw it as a minor recipe, the one that you wouldn’t add to a menu ever because it wasn’t ‘restaurant quality’. However that is changing, big time, and now you’ll find it in the best-hatted restaurants and bars across the country. In fact, a lot of people consider it one of the new trends in 2023!

That´s why today I’m going to ask you to give it a try at home. You’ll see how as soon as you master this recipe, you won’t change it for anything. The perfect cold dessert for a beautiful spring afternoon. Enjoy

Ingredients:

1 cup short grain rice: bomba or arborio

1-2 wide slices lemon rind & orange

1 cinnamon stick

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 pinch salt

4 ¼ cups whole milk

sugar to taste

Method:

• Rinse the rice under cold water, and then put it in a saucepan.

• Pour in enough milk to barely cover the rice, then place over medium heat.

• Add the cinnamon stick and lemon rind, and stir continuously until all of the milk is absorbed.

• Add the rest of the milk about ½ cup (120 ml) at a time, stirring between each addition until all the milk is absorbed.

• Once all the milk is added, taste to see if the rice is cooked to your liking. Some like it al dente, while others like it almost mushy.

• When the rice is cooked, remove the rice from the heat, and add a pinch of salt and the ground cinnamon. Add the sugar a few tablespoons at a time until it is sweet enough for you. Serve it cold.

• For a gourmet finish? Add some sugar on top and blow torch it to create a layer of thin caramel like it was a creme bruleé.

There are lots of ways we can make money. We can work for it, we can work longer hours to make more money, or get a new job that pays more money. We can save money and invest it to make money. We can borrow money to invest, however that comes with added risk as the loan will need to be repaid. But there is one way to make more money that is so easy and sitting right under everyone’s noses, yet most people are going through their working lives letting the opportunity pass them by!

What is it?

Your superannuation.

Super… you might think it’s boring, you might think it doesn’t matter, some people even get the idea in their head that it’s some kind of government conspiracy, but the reality is that super is the easiest way you can make more money for yourself.

For starters, as of July 1 this year, 11 per cent of your pay will be getting sent to a super fund and getting invested. So, even if you pay no attention and do nothing, the government is ensuring something’s automatically happening for your future benefit. 11 per cent of your pay getting invested every year, and the growth on those investments over time, is why super already works to a certain extent.

But what if you did pay attention and did a few things to supercharge your super?

What if you are in a fund charging you higher fees than you need to pay? Avoiding paying high fees is one of the easiest ways to boost your return over time, yet most people don’t know how to work out what fees they are really paying, and super statements don’t

always make it easy to find the true level of fees.

I’m constantly amazed by the level of fees some people are paying to their super fund, and for many people, it’s not until they come and have a chat that they find out the true story.

Now, imagine on top of making sure you were paying low fees, you also invested a little more smartly than just the default option your super fund puts you in. Super funds have to invest members’ money somehow so, for those who choose not to do anything, most funds simply have a one-size-fits-all option. But with a little bit of education and advice, you can get your super working harder to get higher returns over time.

And then imagine that took advantage of the tax benefits of making extra contributions to super. It is money for jam for those who know how the system works! You get to pay less tax while at the same time creating more wealth for yourself.

I don’t work for a super fund, I don’t work for a big financial services company, I’m a 100% independent financial adviser. I have no incentive to be talking up super other than because it works. And the opportunity for you to take advantage of the system is right there waiting for you.

It’s about this time of year that most people receive their superannuation statement. Grab yours, book a free initial appointment, and let’s see what we can do to harness your untapped super power.

Just how big a di erence you can make may surprise you (a lot!)… and your future self will thank you.

If you’d like to fi nd out more about how INDEPENDENT fi nancial advice could help you manage cash fl ow, pay off the mortgage faster, get the most out of super and invest wisely, then get in touch on 0411 484 464 or

Hooray for Hazel

HAZEL MAY PRYDE

26.9.1923 ~ 16.6.2018

Aged 94 years

Hazel didn’t quite make 100 laps around the sun - but she continues to live on in our hearts while they still beat.

Anyone who knew Hazel closely is invited to join family and friends at the Freemason’s Hotel, Molong on Saturday 23 September at 2pm. Which will be 3 days before her 100th birthday.

Please bring any photos or memorabillia and special moments to share as we reflect on the life and personality of this remarkable woman. Wear something vibrant, colourful and stylish to this happy occasion.

We hope to see you at the Freemasons (the Pryde family’s former business to gather and remember) - enjoy a drink for Hazel.

Regards Adrian Pryde

BIG THUMBS UP and thank you to the following people who gave me great assistance in the repair of my ensuite: Wayne from Tates Plumbing Plus; Phil Lambert from Phil Lambert’s Kitchen and Joinery; John from Orange Tile Market; and last, but not least Ben from Mr. Water Plumbing. Very happy with the result. Thanks guys!

A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to the organisers of the Newcrest Bike Ride on Sunday, September 10. Not only did you not give any businesses along Summer Street notice of the road closure until we saw the signs in the street but closing the street o for 10 hours and reducing our income for some businesses down to nil or virtually nothing for the day. There were no riders coming through that section during the day and it has a ected small businesses badly. No communication or a chance to negotiate the time of the road closure. Very poor e ort. From all the small business owners in Summer Street.

THUMBS DOWN to the dirty people who have again dumped a heap of their rubbish in Selwood Lane, Springside.

THUMBS UP from a resident on Beasley Road, Spring Hill, to our garbage truck driver on Friday, September 8. The bins had been blown over by the winds during the night and the driver got out, righted the bins and then picked up garbage that had blown out before she emptied them into the truck. Thank you for the care and extra e ort.

THUMBS DOWN to the people who closed the road leading to Kenna Street on Sunday and left your sign blocking my driveway. I wasn’t impressed.

THUMBS DOWN to the organisers of the Newcrest Challenge for their complete ignorance of the impact of the ride on those of us who live outside the Orange CBD. A seven-hour full closure of Cargo Rd, without any notice, would have had a dreadful impact on those who live and work along Cargo Road. The organisers will have to try a lot harder next year!

THUMBS UP to Cassandra and Debbie and the lovely lady from Iris Patch who helped me when I had a very bad fall in Anson Street earlier this month. This is one main street among many that need attention.

THUMBS UP to the Wellness House Medical Centre. Fantastic sta , caring, and supremely professional — and a fantastic cup of co ee!

THUMBS UP and many thanks to the kind lady from West Orange who messaged to let us know she could see my sad little granddog who su ers from anxiety and confusion in the block next to her. We had been looking for her for hours and it was such a relief to get her back. Thanks again.

THUMBS UP to Dyson. I had an issue with my stick vacuum cleaner and rang the helpline. No waiting and prompt, helpful and e cient service was

forthcoming. It was refreshing and they went beyond my expectations. Most impressed.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for the exorbitant rate increase. At the rate Orange is growing with new subdivisions etc., and the rates that they are collecting, why do they need to put our rates up so much? Is it greed? Do they just like the power to do so? Who knows?

THUMBS DOWN to OCC for still not having footpaths in Park Street opposite Bowen School. The ground is so uneven I tripped and fell and my grandkids had to help me up. Bruises only this time. Please put paths in.

THUMBS DOWN to all the people constantly having a whinge about Orange City Council. Are they making representations to Council? Do they get involved in committee meetings? Most likely they sit back and just have a whinge. It’s always the same people.

THUMBS UP to the wonderful sta at East Orange Post O ce, especially Elizabeth. Having thought I lost some of my credit cards, they went above and beyond to help locate them, finally tracing them back to my car in one of my shopping bags. Elizabeth, you made my day with your act of kindness. I would also like to give a Thumbs Up to Orange, having just moved here four years ago, I am finding everyone I come across such a delight. It’s just marvellous to have a community full of such kind-hearted, caring and welcoming people.
