Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

So, did the Matildas win? Writing this on a Tuesday afternoon means you will know the answer before this magazine gets back from the printers. But, regardless of the outcome of their match against England in the semi-final on Wednesday, it’s been a remarkable run for the Australian Women’s team! It has certainly grabbed the attention of the nation and it’s sure to only further increase the popularity of soccer in this country, I know it has in my household. The tense penalty shootout against France on Saturday night had my seven-year-old running laps through the house screaming incoherently, although admittedly that can sometimes happen during a Monday breakfast.

For those of you who braved the cold to watch the match outside on the big screen in the South Court, I hope the result didn’t leave you feeling cold.

Inside you will see that we are currently looking for someone to join our sales team here at OCL Life. We are looking for a people person who can fit in with our small team and maybe even bring some new ideas. If this sounds like an opportunity for you, please get in touch.

Just a quick reminder to those who enter our competitions, please remember to put your phone number on your entry. While we work miracles here every week to get this magazine into your hands, we can’t conjure up contact information from your name alone.

Until next week!

“It’s Blue Banded Bee O’clock.” A new experimental digital artwork to be installed on the exterior of the Orange Civic Theatre early next year will examine the vital role bees play in our fragile ecosystem. Conceived by award-winning artist Zanny Begg, the video artwork has been described as “a clock with a difference.”

Civic Theatre to be a full-time hive of experimental art activity

It’s a reimagining of the town hall clock: a new experimental digital artwork combining modern dance with one of our country’s oldest scientific collections will soon be an all-day reminder of the vital role bees play in our fragile ecosystem.

Conceived by award-winning artist Zanny Begg, the video artwork ‘Dancing With Bees’ will be permanently displayed on two large screens on the exterior of the Orange Civic Theatre.

Due to be installed early next year, the two large screens will display images of different bee species along with video of local dancers interpreting the movement of bees in what the artist describes as “a clock, but a clock with a difference.”

“The idea is to get people to think about time,” explains Zanny. “When we look at our watch or our phones, we think that’s time, whereas really that’s just a way in which we compartmentalise time and there is this other time, which is seasonal and sort of bigger than the modern human emphasis that we’ve laid on to time,” Zanny explained.

“So I’ve chosen 12 bees that will be the feature of this clock, one for each hour, and the idea is to get people – by engaging with the clock and finding ways to read the time through it, which won’t be immediately apparent – to think about ‘deep time’.

“So the ‘hour-hand’ face of this clock is going to be the bees, but the ‘minute’ face of this clock is going to be dancers from the local Orange area who are going to evoke the colour and movement and look of the bees.”

Bees were chosen to feature given the district’s importance as a food-growing region, but also to highlight the remarkable insect collection held here in Orange by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Begun in 1890, the collection includes more than 450,000 pinned insect specimens and it’s where Zanny has found and selected the 12 bees — local to this area — to include in this art project.

Working with DPI’s Institute Director and Leader Plant Pathology Curation, Plant Biosecurity Research and Development Dr Jordan Bailey, the bees have been

photographed at high resolution (focus stacking, or blending 150 separate images) to capture each in incredible detail.

“It will be really beautiful because bees are absolutely, stunningly beautiful at this sort of micro-scale,” Zanny said, “and we’ll get people to think about really tiny things that are so important in our local environment and that maybe we just might pass over in a busy day.”

The next step in the project is to recruit local dancers, who will work with renowned choreographer Larissa McGowan to devise short dance sequences that will be filmed and displayed on one of the screens.

“It’s an open call… so people of any age or gender, any background or body type,” Zanny said. “We don’t have anything in mind. We’re just looking for people who love to move, basically.”

Orange Regional Gallery Director

Brad Hammond said this is an amazing opportunity for local dancers to be part of a groundbreaking public art project.

“It’s really great that the content for

one of the screens is all coming from this local [insect] collection and references are local native bees and then the other great part is that young people who are interested in the arts, dancers will have this really rare opportunity to work with a great artist, a great choreographer, and a great costume designer and then they will really, literally, become the content of this really groundbreaking and I think really experimental, forward-thinking artwork,” he said.

“It’s going to look aesthetic and fantastic on the building and… it will lend something to our civic square that’s really interesting and fascinating, people will come to see it!

The project has been funded by Create NSW and the Australian Council for the Arts ($110,000), the NSW Government ($40,000) and Orange City Council ($23,000).

Any local dancers interested in applying can find more information on the Orange Regional Gallery website: www.orange.nsw.gov.au/gallery

Women’s amenities and energy e ciency in million-dollar Wade Park upgrade

Almost one million dollars worth of upgrades to improve amenities and boost energy e ciency at Wade Park have now been completed.

The $993,191 project was funded by the NSW Government’s Regional Sport Facility and included: female-friendly improvements to the toilets, showers and change rooms under the grandstand as well as upgrades to the referee room to provide areas for men and women; transforming the old canteen into a suitable storage space; the installation of a 30kw solar panel system and battery storage; replacing the field lighting with energy-e cient LED lighting to improve light quality and reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs; and the installation of three new energy-e cient hot water heaters.

Marking the finalisation of the Wade Park upgrades on Tuesday Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said these improvements would go a long way towards attracting and keeping players and o cials in their chosen sport.

“Wade Park is home to several rugby league, league tag and cricket teams, however the amenities previously only catered for male players. This refurbishment means the facilities are now also suitable for female players, which will allow more women’s

competitions to be held at Wade Park,” Cr Hamling said.

“All competitors will enjoy the benefits of these infrastructure improvements, which provide suitable and safe facilities for male and female players and o cials, not to mention all the teams that travel from far and wide to compete in Orange.”

Cr Hamling said the upgrades also bring the supporting infrastructure up to the standard expected by Cricket NSW and the NRL, making Wade Park a more attractive option for hosting top-level representative matches.

Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Committee Chair, Cr Tammy Greenhalgh, said the energy e ciency improvements mean Wade Park is now Council’s first net-zero facility.

“The addition of the 66KWh battery storage, will support the energy produced by the 30KWh solar system by powering the field lighting at night for training and night matches,” she said. “... which will not only save ratepayers money but reduce its impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions.”

The new LED lights also mean greater light quality at the ground for night matches, she added.

RURAL WOMEN’S GATHERINGS POSTPONED UNTIL NOVEMBER

The NSW Rural Women’s Gathering scheduled to take place in Orange on August 25-27 has been postponed until November.

Conflicting dates with other events was cited by organisers as a major consideration for the late postponement. In a “change of date” announcement on social media, organisers said: “We look forward to bringing you a bigger and brighter program. Grab your girlfriends, lock it in your diary and make Orange a weekend not to be missed.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Rural Women’s Gathering (known as “the Gathering” which first took place in Orange in 1993. The Gathering has been held in di erent locations throughout NSW since.

The Gathering will now be held at the Australian National Field Days site at Borenore on November 25-26.

On Friday, August 18, local veterans will mark the 50th anniversary of the end of our nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War with a service in Robertson Park. Hosted by the local Vietnam Veterans Association Sub Branch the service at the cenotaph will commence at 11am.

Vietnam veterans, National Servicemen, serving members and any veterans who wish to participate are requested to assemble near the CWA Hall at 10.30am and march to the cenotaph. Following the service there will be refreshments provided at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club, upstairs in the Greenhouse Pavilion.

Local visitors and guests are welcome to attend. Between 1962 and 1975, more than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam. It was the longest conflict Australians were involved in during the 20th Century, over 3,000 were wounded and 523 gave their lives.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the conflict a national commemoration service is being held at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade in Canberra. The service will be broadcast live across Australia by the ABC and streamed online.

FLOOD RECOVERY PROGRESSES SLOWLY, but more needs to be done, says Cabonne Mayor

After being displaced for almost nine months, long-time Eugowra resident Grace Katon has celebrated her 83rd birthday by moving back into her own home.

Grace is the first Central West flood victim to move out of one of the temporary housing pods installed in the wake of the catastrophic Eugowra floods of November last year.

While this is another milestone in the step towards recovery, Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty says there is still a long way to go.

“There is progress over in Eugowra, albeit slow, it is happening. The tradies are in there, and there is work being done, but there is a lot more work to be done, that’s for sure,” said Cr Beatty.

“We’ve still got people fighting insurance companies, we’ve still got people that have had insurance knocked back, and the road ahead for them is very di cult. And there’s some people who are just not insured and don’t have the finances to do their renovations or to repair their home. These are the issues we face and therefore, we are going to need a lot more financial assistance out in Eugowra, but also right across Cabonne.”

Grace and her dog Honey were able to live in the temporary housing pod while her home’s kitchen, bathroom and walls were repaired. She is one 88 households so far across the Cabonne, Forbes and Parkes Local Government Areas who have been

Long-time Eugowra resident Grace Katon was able to celebrate her 83rd birthday by moving back into her own home, nine months after the catastrophic Eugowra floods of November last year. While progress towards recovery is being made, Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty says there is still a long way to go.

given emergency shelter as part of the NSW Government’s free Pods on Private Property Program. Another 10 pods are in the final stages of fit-out and 130 pods in total are expected to be installed across the Central West by the end of August. The decommissioned pods will be used again in the area or across NSW as part of future disaster recovery e orts.

While the program has been beneficial, Cr Beatty is calling for an extra hand and took advantage of last week’s visit to Eugowra by NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces

Paul Scully and Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib, to put forward the need for Cabonne to be included in the Resilient Homes Fund.

“Part of that is a buyback package for homes that are really impacted in the floodways and others is to raise these homes out of harm’s way, and to build back with materials that are more flood-resistant,” Cr Beaty said

“During the ministers visit it was discussed, and I’ve asked them to go back and discuss this with the premier because it was

something we identified earlier before the election. We were working with the previous government with it, and now we need to work with this government with it.”

The Resilient Homes Fund has been developed by the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation to improve the resilience of homes in high-risk flood areas in the Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley, and Tweed local government areas, but has not stretched to Cabonne.

During his visit to Eugowra last week, Minister Jihad Dib said that he understands there are many challenges still facing the Central West, but assured people that the government is committed to supporting communities as they recover and rebuild.

A new Community Recovery O cer will soon be working with the Forbes Shire Council to work with community groups as well as disaster management and recovery stakeholders.

“We want to get a clear understanding of how infrastructure and reinstatement works are progressing and to hear from the community about how they are being supported, including those who have been displaced from homes,” he said.

“Disasters have long-lasting impacts and local Community Recovery O cers are one of the ways we can provide practical, on the ground help. By working with community groups and recovery agencies, they can help residents, farmers and businesses get back on their feet.”

Cadia’s Stringer Chain Telehandler’s recognised for excellence in safety

Cadia has been recognised as the winner of the Safety Excellence Award at this year’s NSW Minerals Council’s Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Awards for its work to make replacing failing stringer chains on the underground conveyor belt system safer and more e cient.

The challenge in procuring a compliant machine to replace failing Stringer Chains on underground conveyor belts got Cadia’s Fleet Strategy team thinking about how to modify existing machinery to safely perform the high-risk task. Key safety considerations included the system’s location on a steep grade with limited space, the potential for machine instability during drilling, limited work area, machine size constraints, and the high-risk nature of the work zone.

The first stage of the project involved designing and constructing a compliant machine with essential safety features, such as electronic crush protection, stability safety

interlocks and modifying the existing basket to meet requirements and prevent machine overloading.

The result is Cadia’s safer and more e cient Stringer Chain Telehandler.

Through consultation with Manitou and the Cadia East Fixed Plant Maintenance team, the new Stringer Chain Telehandler’s upgraded safety platform complies with relevant standards for using mobile elevated work platforms, resulting in immediate benefits for Cadia and o ering broader applications within the underground mining industry.

The success of the design has led to its consideration by one of our site

contractors, as well as the original equipment manufacturer, Manitou, including our custom-designed inclination system as a standard option.

Sharing the excitement of the award, a Cadia spokesperson said, “The new Stringer Chain Telehandler is the result of great collaboration between sites teams and the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to deliver a solution that meets our bespoke needs at Cadia. This project highlights our ability to innovate to find safer and more e cient solutions for complex safety challenges.”

Record-breaking Orange Eisteddfod in full swing

The City of Orange Eisteddfod is into its third week with a record number of entries across all categories.

More than 5,000 arts performance students from around the region will have taken to the stage in Orange by the time this year’s Eisteddfod comes to a close on September 1.

Competitors range in age from three years to mature age, but all here to showcase their craft in drama, dance and music. According to President Meaghan Cooper, many sections had over 30 entries, requiring them to split them in order to cope with the volume of performances.

Orange City Life photographer Cec Tilburg captured a few highlights from the group dance performances on Sunday, August 13.

“A wonderful outcome for our co unity”

Push for Palliative welcome expanded end-of-life care at Orange Hospital.

Orange’s Push for Palliative advocacy group has welcomed the announcement that Orange Hospital will soon have five designated beds for endof-life care in a specially designed unit.

Orange is one of five hospitals that will receive new and expanded units as part of the NSW Government’s $93 million investment in improving palliative care facilities throughout the state.

Orange Hospital currently has two designated end-of-life beds, largely thanks to the lobbying of local advocacy group

Push for Palliative (P4P). Founded following a public meeting in 2015, the group has tirelessly advocated for better Palliative care services for Orange and the surrounding districts.

Orange P4P president Jenny Hazelton said she was thrilled that their voices had finally been heard.

“We are also very pleased the NSW government has listened and responded in a timely manner since taking o ce to recognize that two designated beds in Orange is simply not enough considering the size of our population,” Jenny said.

“Our group is extremely appreciative that in the lead-up to this announcement

our group was involved in the consultative process and this is a wonderful outcome for our community.”

Jenny thanked NSW Health Minister Ryan Park following his announcement on August 4, adding that the input of Member for Orange Phil Donato over the last few years has been invaluable.

Push for Palliative currently funds and provides meals and other amenities for endof-life patients and their families at Orange Hospital.

Jenny said they are committed to assisting with the establishment of the additional beds in any way we can.

“We now need to be a little patient to enable the administrative and construction process to proceed,” she said.

“Our group remains committed to do whatever we can to support the establishment of the five designated beds in the hospital following Minister Park’s announcement.”

Jenny added that this support will be in tandem with their goal to see a stand-alone hospice built near the hospital that could provide end-of-life care, respite beds for families caring for loved ones at home, pain management, and a range of other support services and activities.

JAXSON DOWTON Work Experience

I always find great pleasure in hosting students for work experience and this week was a wonderful opportunity as I had the privilege of welcoming Jaxson Dowton, a Year 10 student from James Sheahan, to my electorate office. Throughout the week, Jaxson joined my team and actively engaged in various activities, including touring different areas within the electorate, participating in meetings, conversing with ministers and taking part in official functions. This experience provided him with a valuable and genuine understanding

of the responsibilities associated with being a Local Member of Parliament. Jaxson displayed a remarkable level of enthusiasm, maturity and exemplary manners. My team and I thoroughly enjoyed his presence. As he continues on his journey, I extend my best wishes to Jaxson. I am confident that he had a fulfilling and enjoyable week and I eagerly anticipate his visit to Parliament House later this year, where he will gain further insights into that aspect of government proceedings.

Ministers visit Electorate

It was a significant occasion to welcome two senior Ministers to the Orange Electorate last week, as they engaged with local councils and visited communities that had been affected by the floods of November 2022. Jihad Dib MP and Paul Scully MP dedicated two full days to an extensive tour, connecting with representatives and mayors from Orange, Cabonne, Parkes and Forbes, along with the Central West Joint Organisation of Councils. Their purpose was to engage in comprehensive discussions and actively listen to the input regarding flood recovery, mitigation strategies and preparedness measures.

Nonetheless, the journey towards recovery is far from complete. There are still struggling communities and individuals who find themselves residing in temporary accommodations such as pods and caravans. It remains of utmost importance that the Central West region remains on the forefront of consideration. The gratitude extends to both Ministers for their proactive presence, as they ventured out to witness firsthand the impacts and necessities of our communities. This genuine effort was deeply valued.

New piano makes a grand statement at the Con

After 18 months of anticipation, Orange Regional Conservatorium (ORC) is now finally in possession of its very own world-class Steinway and Sons grand piano.

The magnificent hand-crafted instrument was purchased thanks to $250,000 from the State Government, as part of their NSW Creative Capital grants.

The grant was announced back in December, 2021, but the piano is finally here and in prime position in the ORC concert hall.

Head of Keys David Shaw, and Projects and Programs Manager James Buchanan, were sent out to Melbourne to choose the oneof-a-kind piano. After exploring the range of options, David described the chosen piano as having “the most even tone”.

“One had a great bass but not as strong high register and the other vice versa, but the one we chose was the freshest o the boat from Germany and had a really nice even tone from bass to treble,” he said.

Steinways are classed as one of the world’s finest pianos, and the ORC hopes to attract performances of the same level.

“We’re putting in a world-class grand piano to draw world-class performances and touring artists, and giving our community a legacy that will live for a long time,” said ORC Director Donna Riles.

For Development Manager Bridget Kerr it’s the opportunity to o er visiting artists a high-quality instrument to complement their performance that excites her the most.

“To know we have a really high-quality

“Steinway and Sons are a handmade piano. They bend the wood with a certain machine, and it’s all done by hand. There’s something like 12,000 parts to it, it’s a piece of art itself. Christening the piano for its first-ever performance will be none other than Ensemble Q on Friday, August 25.

Presented in association with Musica Viva Australia, the show will consist of Paul Dean on clarinet; Natsuko Yoshimoto on violin; Trish Dean on cello; and Daniel de Borah on the brand-new piano. “Oh, it feels amazing,” Nick said. “Ultimately people drinking our cider is the thing that matters to us the most but, when we win awards, it really helps to get the word out for us. We’re in an area that’s got a great reputation for food and

drink and just showing that we’re part of it is brilliant.”

Its origin is interesting: “We were looking for something that really reflected the local fruit and Pink Lady apples are favourites for a lot of people,” he said. “Visitors to our cellar door constantly ask about Pink Lady apples as they see them in the orchards and in the stores around Orange. We wanted to put these apples ‘in the glass’.”

Released just nine months ago, Nick said the Pink Lady Apple Cider has become a popular choice at their cellar door. “And when they see it, they’re interested. But once they actually have it, they just go, ‘Wow!’ because that sweetness and sharpness combined is a great thing for cider!”

All the apples for the cider are sourced from two orchards

on the slopes of Mount Canobolas. “Our ciders are all made from fresh apples. No concentrates. And we really work with the growers to make sure we’ve got great fruit to do that,” Nick said, adding that there is growing interest in craft cider, which is good for the future of the local industry.

“I think there’s a huge amount of interest in quality stu made from local fruit and, yeah, we’re lucky with that.

“Cider is still much smaller than beer and wine. But yeah, I think it’s growing and it’s a great place to be!”

At the Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show, Small Acres Cyder were also awarded a Gold Medal for their 2021 Pommeau and a Silver Medal for their Heritage Blend.

Last week we welcomed two NSW Ministers to the storm and flood-hit areas of Eugowra, Molong and Cudal.

Jihad Dib is the Minister for Emergency Services, and Paul Scully is the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces. Member for Orange Phil Donato and I wanted to get the Ministers into our area because we want to see the same level of storm and flood support for the Central West that other parts of NSW have received.

It doesn’t seem right that an area that has been devastated as much as ours has not received equality in funding. I think they got a good sense of the devastation and the destruction, and how hard recovery has been.

During the visit, one highlight was

meeting up with Grace Katon who was turning 83! Grace is a Eugowra resident who was living in a pod, but whose house has now been renovated.

One of Grace’s unfulfilled wishes was to go on a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, so while we were inside doing the formalities, Eugowra-local Tim turned up with his Harley to take Grace on a birthday ride!

Grace also collects green garden ornament frogs. She had hundreds and many of them got washed away last November. Since then, the frog population has been slowly rebuilding. If you have any nice looking green frogs to spare, if you drop them at my office, they will find their way to Grace’s place very quickly and be much appreciated!

LACK OF DISASTER RELIEF RAISED IN PARLIAMENT

In Parliament recently, I again called for key recovery funding programs for our region that other disaster-hit areas are benefitting from.

Many months after being hit by storm, flood and fire disasters, residents of our region are being held back from moving on because they’re locked out of disaster recovery programs to help them get back on their feet.

Successive state governments have failed to activate this support.

I called on the NSW and Australian Governments to answer these questions:

WHY does the Northern Rivers area have access to the home buyback and retrofit scheme and not the storm and flood-hit areas of the Central West?

WHY is it that other Local Government Areas have access to the Community Assets Program to help rebuild their towns and villages - but councils in our region do not?

WHY hasn’t a grant program similar to the Northern Rivers Commercial Property – Return to Business Support Grant been announced for our storm and

flood-hit areas?

WHY is travelling on our bridges and roads still like a war zone?

The Nyrang Creek Bridge, and the road between Wellington and Dunedoo are still closed.

How can it be that in 2023, we are closing roads instead of fixing them?

WHY are residents of the Hill End region STILL excluded from the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants to help the area bounce back from the recent devastating bushfires?

It’s deeply shocking that these grants have still not been made available to our farmers.

There is a fundamental injustice and inequality going on here with respect to disaster assistance provided by the state and federal governments.

The people of Central Western NSW have been through more than their fair share of hardships in recent times.

Our residents pay their taxes just like everyone else, yet they’re being treated like second-class citizens.

This is as appalling as it is inexcusable.

It was great to host this year's brilliant bunch of TEN4TEN students at Parliament House recently!

Run by Regional Development Australia, the TEN4TEN program matches ten ambitious young leaders from the Central West with ten mentors from across the region.

During their visit to the house on the hill, the students took a behind-thescenes tour, discovering all the nooks and crannies of Parliament House.

It was great to chew the fat with the group over lunch, with the students and I having a very engaging chat about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

It was fantastic that the students got to sit in on Question Time and visit the Senate too, and were passing through the Members' Hall at just the right moment to see the unveiling of the official portrait of former PM Kevin Rudd!!

I hope you enjoed your time in Canberra!

Manildra's historic community-run Amusu Theatre is turning 100 this year!

What better way to usher in the centenary festivities than a country music spectacular. It was terrific to join the Manildra community and Aussie country music star Lyn Bowtell to kick off the birthday bash!

Thank you to all of the community members who've worked so hard to ensure the Amusu Theatre continues to thrive and prosper.

WHY IS THE VOICE NECESSARY?

It’s hard to believe, but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in our nation’s founding document. This wrong must be made right. The Voice provides that recognition in a meaningful way.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower life expectancy, higher suicide rates, higher infant mortality rates, and worse educational outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. The gap isn’t closing, and despite well-intentioned governments, the current approach isn’t working.

In the modern, prosperous Australia of 2023, how can this be acceptable?

We need to change it up. The Voice is about listening and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Australia.

BUT DON’T WE ALREADY HAVE INDIGENOUS PARLIAMENTARIANS?

We do, but like governments, individual parliamentarians come and go, and they represent parties. The Voice would be independent and be above partisan party politics. Having it in the Constitution provides independence, consistency, and continuity.

IS THE VOICE LEGALLY AND CONSTITUTIONALLY SOUND?

Yes. A host of constitutional law experts and organisations have given the Voice the tick of approval as being legally and constitutionally sound, including:

• Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French

• Former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne

• Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC

• Leading constitutional law professors

• The Solicitor General of Australia

• New South Wales Bar Association

• The Law Society of New South Wales

• The Law Council of Australia

• The University of Sydney Law School

• Flinders University Law school

• The University of New South Wales

• Adelaide Law School

• University of Queensland constitutional lawyers

• Gilbert & Tobin Lawyers

WILL THE VOICE HAVE THE POWER OF VETO OVER LEGISLATION?

No. Myth busted. There is no veto. This means it would have no power to overrule Parliament, and any advice it gives would be non-binding.

WILL THE VOICE BE A THIRD CHAMBER OF PARLIAMENT?

No. Myth Busted. The Voice can’t and won’t introduce bills or run programs. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament.

WILL THE VOICE “GUM UP” THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITH COURT CHALLENGES AND STOP BUDGETS, CHANGE ANZAC DAY, TAKE LAND, BAN FISHING, STOP NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE CONTRACTS OR CREATE A SEPARATE STATE?

to ban anything. These wild claims are ludicrous.

WHO WILL BE ON THE VOICE?

Members of the Voice will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and serve for a fixed period. It will include Indigenous Australians from every state and territory, the Torres Strait Islands and representatives from the regions and remote communities. It will be subject to the rules made for it by Parliament.

WHY CAN’T WE PUT THE RULES OF THE VOICE IN THE CONSTITUTION?

Because our Constitution provides the broad framework for governing our country and we leave it to our elected representatives via the Parliament to pass legislation about details such as rules.

For example, in 1901 the Constitution gave the Australian Government the power to set up a High Court and other courts. It wasn’t until 1903 that Parliament established the High Court through legislation. Then in

DOES

1975 the Parliament set up the Family Court through legislation. Another example is that in 1901 the Constitution gave the Commonwealth the power over currency but left it to the Parliament to work out things like what the notes are and what they look like. In 1910 a law about notes was passed. Banknotes finally got issued in 1913.

The Voice will be set up by the Parliament and subject to its rules.

WOULD THE VOICE STOP ME DIGGING A HOLE IN MY GARDEN OR ON MY FARM?

No. Another whacky myth busted. It’s an advisory body folks! The Voice would not be able to force the Parliament to do anything it doesn’t want to do. The veggie garden is quite safe.

No. Myth busted. The Voice does not give any group any special rights. It’s an advisory body that doesn’t give any rights to anyone. This has been confirmed by eminent constitutional lawyers and former High Court judges.

ISN’T THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS AGENCY (NIAA) THE SAME AS THE VOICE?

No. Not at all. Myth busted.

Unlike the proposed Voice, the NIAA is not independent of government, it’s part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Only 22% of its staff are Indigenous. It can be abolished at the stroke of a pen. It can’t give advice to the Parliament.

Oh and the NIAA doesn’t have a $30 billion budget (another myth busted there on the way through).

The Voice would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous Australians. WHAT IS THE VOICE? No. Myth busted. Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC has described claims the Voice would lead to endless court challenges and the “gumming up” of the wheels of government as “nonsense” and “too silly for words”. Make the Right Choice for your Investment Property Because its our Business

Do You want a Property Manager you can trust to manage your investment property, see what others have to say...

I've been renting a property managed by Alisha Staines and Ray White Townsend Real Estate for a few years now, and I couldn't be happier with their service. From the start, Alisha has been incredibly friendly, responsive, and accommodating, making the rental process smooth and stress-free. Whenever I've had questions or concerns, Alisha has been quick to address them and provide helpful solutions. She's also been great at keeping me informed about any upcoming inspections or maintenance work, so I always know what to expect. Ray White Townsend Real Estate as a whole has been equally fantastic. They have a great selection of rental properties, and their website is easy to navigate and use. The leasing process was straightforward, and the team was incredibly helpful and professional throughout. All in all, I highly recommend Alisha Staines and Ray White Townsend Real Estate to anyone looking for a great rental experience. They truly care about their clients and go above and beyond to provide exceptional service.

We have been renting through Ray White Townsend real-estate since 2017, in that time we have always had a great experience. They are always quick to help with any issues we may have. When our last rental went on the market Ana went above and beyond to help us find a new home suitable for our family. I would highly recommend Ana, Kathie and all the team!

Nothing is too much trouble for Amanda - answering all our questions, helping to find us a tenant for our rental and providing a wonderful professional service. Amanda is always available to speak to when needed. Amanda is very thorough and knowledgeable. We would have no hesitation in recommending Amanda and Ray White Townsend Real Estate.

The company is professionally run with customer-oriented goals. My property manager Analea Bevan always goes above and beyond to help with any “if there is “issues. I will definitely recommend them to anyone.

Alisha has always been quick to get back to me and has sorted any issues out for us incredibly fast in an incredibly polite and approachable manner. The house needed a new hot water heater (not desperately), and it was organized and installed within a week. Incredibly happy.

Give us a call at our Orange, Blayney or Molong Office to see how easy it is for you.

The benefits of mulch THE AVID GARDENER…

There is a hint of spring in the air! With all these sunny days of late things are already starting to move again in the garden and it won’t be long before we see Orange in full bloom. This week, Henrietta Hood from The Avid Gardener, runs through all the benefits of mulching your garden beds. One of the most valuable things you can do for your garden is to mulch, says Henrietta.

Mulching not only looks great in garden beds, it also suppresses weeds by blocking out sunlight. It also helps to retain moisture in the ground which means less watering, and it maintains more even soil temperatures (particularly important in our cool climate).

Our personal preference is to use organic sugar cane, lucerne or pea straw mulch (the latter two add extra nitrogen to the soil). It tends to break down beautifully over time putting more organic matter back into the soil, encouraging earthworms and microorganisms for happy and healthy plants.

Be generous with the amount of mulch you apply. At least 8-10cm in depth. It will need to be replaced periodically as it breaks down but this is a good thing. It means it is adding back to the soil creating a healthy and bio diverse environment for your garden.

WORLD CUP FEVER:

We are gripped with World Cup fever. And rightly so. As the tournament enters the final stages, we can certainly reflect on what has been a phenomenal tournament. The Matildas have been amazing and have risen to the challenge. That quarter final was epic! (Although at the time of writing we don’t know the result of the semi-final between us and England). I must admit that I am not a big fan of soccer, but I couldn’t help but get swept up in the drama of that game. I was yelling loudly, groaning deeply, calling the referee to make decisions like any die-hard fan would be. We all know that penalty shoot-outs are a cruel way to decide the outcome of a game, but there is something truly joyous when it comes o our way. I think back to the John Aloisi penalty in 2005 that sent the Socceroos to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. But this shootout was remarkable. The drama, the emotion, the ultimate result has cemented this Matildas side as one of the greats, and it feels like we are standing on the verge of something truly remarkable. There is another element that has made this World Cup special, and that is the crowds. The sell-out stadiums; the packed viewing areas; the record TV ratings. Even the talk of a public holiday that is reminiscent of Bob Hawke’s famous line after the Australian victory at the America’s Cup in 1983. This World Cup seems to have united us in more ways

than we perhaps thought. It has hit the pause button on a lot of the usual political chatter. It has given everyone something to talk about. It has brought us together, as this team of remarkable and talented women carry the hopes of our nation. We should rightly celebrate the achievements of the Matildas. To reach a World Cup semi-final is no easy feat. But do we give them the glory and worship that elevates this team to the status of demigod? As a Christian, my allegiance is ultimately to God and he is the one who receives the glory that he deserves for who He is and what He does. Psalm 115 opens with these words that help show this:

‘Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.’ It is good and right that we celebrate the achievements of the Matildas at this World Cup. I really hope that by the time of publication, we are gearing up for a blockbuster World Cup final where we have a real shot at claiming the ultimate victory in women’s football. As we get behind this team and celebrate with them as a nation, perhaps there can be a space to think about where truly glory lies and maybe even to reflect on the one who gives us all the good things we enjoy so that we might know where glory is truly found.

and phone number. Entries close 12 noon Tuesday.

Art display celebrates 175 years of public school education

Orange Public School students were treated to a morning tea at the Orange City Centre last week, to celebrate the launch of a school art exhibition to mark Education Week.

The display (located in Shop 1, opposite House) celebrated 175 years of public school education in NSW.

Given Orange Public’s long presence in the Colour City, it was fitting that the students put some of their school’s

history on display.

Mr Chris Sutton and the class of 5 Lilac, created some wonderful pencil drawings of the iconic OPS school building at the corner of Kite and Sale Streets, the foundation stone of which was laid by Sir Henry Parkes in October 1880.

The display also features a selection of artwork from di erent students throughout the school.

Rotary Orange Daybreak recently took the trek to Junee to o er their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the inmates and sta of the Junee Correctional Centre for their generosity and enormous contribution to the Eugowra Community Child Care Centre.

The Junee inmates had designed and constructed a range of new furniture for the Centre, which replaced what was lost and destroyed in the horror floods of 2022. Their talents, craftsmanship and labour provided much-needed assistance to the school in their time of great need.

SALT & PEPPER SQUID: An Aussie Classic with a European Connection

It doesn’t matter where you are in Australia, or the type of establishment you choose, you’ll be able to find some version of this delicious staple dish, from a local fish ‘n chip shop to an expensive city restaurant.

It is said that salt and pepper squid comes from China and the recipe originates from the southern Canton area. In the original version, starch was used instead of flour, and the squid was flavoured with ginger and chilli. The whole thing was fried in a lot of oil in a wok.

With the Italian migration in the ‘50s, squid – or calamari as we call it in Europe –started appearing in shops and restaurants and, not long after, Australians embraced this deep-fried dish more in their daily lives.

I personally connect massively with this dish! The more that I live and learn about the Aussie style of life and the way we think here, the more I connect dots between the Spanish culture and the Australian, realising how similar we are in a lot of aspects.

For example, did you know that in Madrid, where I’m from, one of the most important street food dishes is a bocadillo (sandwich) of deep-fried calamari? Yep… imagine a delicious salt ‘n pepper squid between a really good crispy piece of bread with a good dollop of aioli sauce. Yum, right?

It is one of those things you eat during the weekend when you go out with some friends for a ‘couple of beers’, and that I’m sure anyone who has visited the Spanish capital has tried in their holidays. It has it all in my opinion: it’s crispy, fatty, salty, garlicky. Add a touch of lemon squeeze, sit in the sun, close your eyes, and that is the moment you could easily be in my city.

Would you like to know a few tricks and tips to make a good salt and pepper squid at home?

OK, let’s start with your flour mix. There are many versions of this, but my advice is to try half plain flour with half cornflour.

Important: make sure you season this flour mix really well, because this would be the flavour of the result.

But Rubén should I use fresh or frozen squid? Well that is totally up to you, your cooking skills, and the amount of money you want to spend. Either way you’ll get a good result.

Tip 1. To tenderise the squid and remove some of the chewiness, you can add kiwi fruit juice/mashed for half an hour before cooking. The acidity of the fruit will help to break down the protein (after that wash it well under cold water). Store it in the fridge.

Tip 2. Take the squid out of the fridge 30 minutes before using it and pat it dry with a paper towel.

Tip 3. Cut the squid in half lengthwise and score it using a knife, creating a diamond pattern. This allows flavours to sink into the protein; it cooks evenly and also looks great.

(Optional tip 3: Do it Spanish style, just cutting rings of the squid. It will be easier and faster.)

Tip 4. Start coating your squid with the flour. Do it little by little, remembering that small batches are always better.

Tip 5. Get the right oil, like vegetables or canola to deep-fry the squid. Wait until it’s nice and hot (around 180 degrees).

Tip 6. Add the squid to the hot oil, always placing it from nearest you to away. Doing it like this means that if there was any splash, the hot oil won’t get you. Please use the right tools to flip it and grab it from the hot oil. After a couple of minutes and when it’s cooked, place it on a tray with kitchen paper to remove the excess oil.

Serving note: serve it Aussie style with a lemon wedge and some type of sauce on the side. Or, get a good baguette, a bit of aioli, and make yourself a Madrid-style calamari sambo.

THUMBS UP to Rebecca and Marlarka from Orange Dental Clinic. Your expertise and overall care with my two children’s (both under 5) first dental experience is one they still tell everyone they meet about weeks later. Thank you both for being exceptional in your field.

THUMBS DOWN to ABC Western Plains (who have been broadcasting to Orange and surrounds recently) for only allowing listeners to contribute to the broadcast by text only as no phone number is given. This, to me, is a form of discrimination. The ABC is the Emergency Broadcaster and should be open to all forms of contact.

THUMBS UP to Jess from Chunky and Sweet, every order of sugar cookies has been seamless and the cookies are to die for. Thank you for your creativity, you baking genius.

THUMBS DOWN to the lady with the golden retriever who did not clean up after her dog, while walking near the corner of Hill and Casey Street No one walking a dog has any excuse to not pick up their dog’s mess.

THUMBS UP to Trent at Peter Ball who helped an old lady whose car had broken down. He got her home and did a major repair to the car and all within three days. He was so nice and helpful, I couldn’t wish to have a nicer mechanic.

THUMBS UP to Orange City Life newspaper, which I discovered while passing through your beautiful city. A vibrant and vital local newspaper, bringing together the community. Congratulations to the team and also the advertisers who clearly see benefits.

THUMBS UP to Raku Izakaya restaurant, where we (Sydney people) had a world-class meal this week. Some excellent and unique twists on traditional and modern Japanese dining, the Wagyu steak with roast veggies in a Teriyaki butter glaze was to die for!

THUMBS DOWN to the latest Council rate notice: Can someone please explain why my latest Council rate notice has increased by 12 per cent when the CPI is at 6 per cent?

THUMBS UP to Orange Auto Electrics. After finding a fault with the electrics the day before a caravan trip, I rushed my vehicle down arriving as the crew were about to finish for the day. Without hesitation, I was given assistance and the problem was resolved in minutes. Weekend trip saved! Thank you! What a great business!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for the higher rates. Roads falling apart and you can’t even budget for the mess in Lord’s Place. Hang your heads in shame!

THUMBS UP to Starchem pharmacy for all the wonderful range of Father’s Day gifts. Love their variety of warm socks.

THUMBS UP to Cheeky Barista Cafe, we enjoyed our lunch and co ee, thank you.

THUMBS UP to Collins Booksellers for the great range of maps, especially for around our local areas.

THUMBS UP to Atash from JR Richards who helped me sort my bin problems. She was a whirlwind of action. Thank you.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Post O ce sta . Despite the current renovation challenges, they still provide e cient friendly customer service.

THUMBS UP to the very patient and helpful young lady in the O ceworks photo shop on August 8, your help was truly appreciated.

THUMBS DOWN to Albo wanting a public holiday for the Matilda’s, as a small business owner we can’t absorb any more! Fed up employer!

THUMBS UP to Hannah at Tarocash, for her excellent customer service and staying back an extra 45 mins to help with my purchase.

THUMBS DOWN to the people around Orange who throw rubbish out of their car windows or when walking around Orange streets… take it home and throw it in your bin, that’s what bins are for!

THUMBS UP to the volunteers of the Orange Eisteddfod Committee. We are so lucky to have such an incredible event in our city. Thank you!

THUMBS UP to U3A Orange. I have recently retired and really enjoying opportunities of learning and exploring di erent interests for such a minimal fee and meeting the nicest folks. Great place to meet new friends.

THUMBS UP to ECCO for showing the film Giants last Sunday at the Odeon 5. Not only was it an insightful movie but the realisation that if we don’t protect oldgrowth forests now there will be nothing left even in our lifetime.

THUMBS DOWN to the drivers who think the Northern Distributor is a race track. How I wish that the police would book these idiots.

TRIPLE THUMBS UP to the young guy working at Harris Farm whose quick reaction stopped that woman from stealing all that meat. Well done buddy!

CHAMPION BASKETBALL TEAM

These young basketball players from Orange Rural School had much to celebrate in June 1958 when they won the NSW under 15 years championship. They were undefeated throughout the carnival, which was held in Sydney. They were: Helen Keevil, Joan Simcock, Beverley Floyd, Gwen Whiley, Wendy Murray, Glory Pearson, Joan Perryman, Pam Murray, Barbara Corby and Dawn Moss.
