Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

So I’ve returned to the office refreshed this week after a quick 1200-kilometre lap through western NSW on the weekend, travelling from the Lachlan to the Darling River. For those of us who grew up under the big skies of the western plains, there is something comforting in the wide open spaces, the grey floodplains and the red sandhills! Even the air feels different! On my travels, I played tourist in Cobar for the first time in many years and commend their excellent museum to anyone passing through. Also, the moving miner’s memorial, and the rather remarkable Sound Chapel, a truly unique art/music installation on a rocky hill on the outskirts of town.

Sadly, I had limited time to spend, but I will be turning my gaze west again soon.

So apparently our “Find Pinny” competition was a little challenging this last week, judging by the number of people who phoned or dropped by insisting that “Pinny” was not to be found. We assure you he was there and you can look for yourself on the bottom of page 19 if you have our last issue to hand. Well done to the eagle-eyed readers who did spot him there on our entertainment page and good luck to you all this week.

Due to a few last-minute demands on our space, we have had to leave out our Orange Property Market open house guide from the magazine. Apologies, but did you know it is available every week on our website? Just visit www.orangecitylife. com.au/real-estate for your comprehensive guide to the local property market. You’ll even find it there on Wednesday afternoons before OCL hits the newsstands.

Until next week!

Warm welcome as the Governor of NSW tours region

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, the Governor of New South Wales, received a warm welcome in Orange last week, while she toured the region with Mr Dennis Wilson. Her Excellency visited Orange, Eugowra, Canowindra, Millthorpe, and Cowra.

Starting with the NSW SES Orange City Unit Training Evening with local members, Her Excellency and entourage met with the zone commander and deputy zone commander for NSW SES western zone. This was followed the next day by Her Excellency and Mr Wilson’s visit to Wangarang Industries, where they were shown around by CEO of Wangarang Kevin McGuire. Wangarang put on quite the show for the visiting Vice-Regal

couple, all busy with arts and crafts, games, and eager to demonstrate their jobs in the production room.

Louise Ann Hawkey, from Wangarang Industries, told the Governor how she had skipped swim training to be there for her visit. Her Excellency took such a liking to Ms Hawkey’s story and passion for swimming, she presented her with a Governor’s Medallion.

The Governor’s tour continued to Nashdale Public School and the Life Education NSW Mobile Learning Centre, the NSW DPI Orange Agricultural Institute, Charles Sturt University, then onwards to Eugowra. Here she heard about the various flood recovery activities, and stopped into the

Canowindra CWA branch and Blayney for afternoon tea.

On Friday night, the Governor and Mr Wilson joined the community in celebrations at the opening of the Millthorpe Fire Fair, before resting up for the 79th anniversary of the Cowra Prisoner of War Breakout Commemoration events on Saturday morning.

The commemoration ceremony was held at the Australian and Japanese war cemeteries in Cowra. Also in attendance were the Japanese ambassador His Excellency Kazuhiro Suzuki, Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack, NSW Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke, and other dignitaries.

COMMEMORATING THE END OF THE VIETNAM WAR 50 YEARS ON

Australians will mark the 50th anniversary of the end of our nation’s involvement in the Vietnam War with services and memorials throughout the country on August 18.

Between 1962 and 1975, more than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam. It was the longest conflict Australians were involved in during the 20th Century, over 3,000 were wounded and 523 gave their lives.

On Vietnam Veterans’ Day, August 18 2023, a national commemoration service will be held at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade in Canberra.

The service will be broadcast live across Australia by the ABC and streamed online.

In Orange, the local Vietnam Veterans Association Sub Branch are hosting their own commemoration service at Robinson Park.

Vietnam veterans, National Servicemen, serving members and any veterans who wish to participate are

AROUND THE REGION

requested to assemble near the CWA Hall at 10.30am on Friday, August 18 and march to the cenotaph, where the local service will commence at 11am. Following the service there will be refreshments provided at the Orange Ex-Services Club, upstairs in the Greenhouse Pavilion. Local visitors and guests are welcome to attend.

2023 BANJO PATERSON WRITING AWARDS WINNERS

Sydney-based poet Jonathan Cant’s emotive and powerful reflection on the experiences of war has earned him top honours at the 2023 Banjo Paterson Writing Awards.

Announced at the Orange Readers and Writers Festival, held at the Hotel Canobolas on Saturday morning, Orange’s now three-decade-old writing awards attracted entries from all over Australia Winner of the Contemporary Poetry section, Jonathan Cant, is a writer, poet, and musician whose work has been Longlisted for the 2023 Fish Poetry Prize and the Flying Islands Poetry Manuscript Prize. He has also been commended in the W. B. Yeats Poetry Prize, and in the South Coast Writers Centre Awards.

Jonathan’s winning poem, Thunderstorm at Newton Boyd, was hailed by judges for its emotive depth and precise use of language.

“Your poem has emotive depth that is gained by many reads,” Judge Deborah Smith wrote in her comments. “Each time I read your poem I was struck by something new as well as being immersed in the familiar. A poem that allows the reader to reflect and consider our past and future is very powerful.”

The winner of the Short Story section was Cowra’s Timothy Guy, for Anna, a story about two young children who encounter the bushranger Ben Hall.

The judge, John Willing PSM said the story “captured the reader from the outset and continued with a frisson of excitement to entertain until the end.”

The winner in the Children’s section was Kaitlyn Rutledge, of Woodstock, for Blood runs faster than water — a study of personal trauma for a character trapped in a hospital.

The Children’s second prize went to Ebony Inman of Mullion Creek for We’re gonna be okay, while the third prize was won by Jenna Poore of Bendena Gardens, with The Journey through the Gibson Desert.

HOW I GET MY KICKS:

Dave Stelling, strongman competitor

“Strongman was something that was always calling me from a little kid,” he says. “Seeing things like guys doing the log on TV, my uncle would be watching The World’s Strongest Man, or the crazy things you see on the news sometimes, guys pulling trucks, that sort of thing… I thought, wow that’s really cool, I want to give it a go!”

strongman events.

“Strong man training was a bit of a left-hand turn for me. It has always been something that’s been of interest… but in my last year of football, during preseason I broke my foot, which was pretty frustrating,” says Days.

Forced to sit on the sidelines, he started taking strength training more seriously and finally decided it was something he wanted to pursue.

“Probably mid-2020, I bit the bullet and bought my first ‘log’ and then the rest is history!”

Seeking the assistance of Sydney-based coach Andrew Rajeevran, Dave entered his first competition in December 2021.

“My best mate Tom Boog and I, we did our first comp together and we ended up coming third!” he says.

“It’s slowly growing,” he says. “And highland games are getting to be a bit more popular in Australia, which strongman takes a lot from as well like you stone lifting, you’re throwing events.

“So it’s getting there slowly, but surely… In the central west, there’s not much out this way. Dubbo has had a new strongman gym open up, but even they’re sort of finding their feet. If you want to find a popular scene, you’re probably looking at Western Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and then you’re going to Victoria where most of the events in Australia are held.”

Dave is now keeping busy in his backyard gym training for his next event: the NSW Strongest in October.

“I’d love to get an event win,” says Dave, although he adds that his main goal is to not “zero” or fail a lift in any events on the day.

Strongman, or strength athletics, is a sport that tests competitors’ strength and endurance in a series of varied events.Unlike other strength sports, you’ll find strongman competitors lifting, pushing or pulling equipment not usually seen in a gym, like stones, logs — even a car!

It’s all part of the appeal, says Dave.

It was while playing rugby league during his school years that Dave was first introduced to strength training, something he’s kept up ever since and even made a career out of as an exercise physiologist.

But it was a preseason injury that became the catalyst for him taking off the football boots and entering the world of competitive

“My first individual comp… it was a bit of a wake-up call! But yeah, it let me know what the standard is at that next tier up, what the expectation is.”

Strongman is a sport that has grown in popularity in recent years alongside other fitness and stretch competitions such as CrossFit Games and powerlifting.

But it is still a very niche activity, says Dave.

“There are a few events that probably sit well with me, but a few might be a bit touch and go... I should be fairly competitive throughout the day,” he continues.

“An event win there would be massive! But my long-term goals? I’d love to get a few international events under my belt. If, in a few years’ time, I can get to that level it would be really cool.”

ANCIENT TRADITIONS REBORN AT WINTER FIRE FESTIVAL

ith pagan and atavistic origins, fire festivals have had a long history of whimsical nights, dancing, and folk music. The celebration of light and fire has tended to centre on the end of summer and initial steps into the onset of long, dark nights. But – despite it creeping towards the end of winter – this is exactly the atmosphere you can expect and experience at the Orange Winter Fire Festival.

Five years on from its humble beginnings, the Orange Winter Fire Festival has found its niche in providing an alternative, fun, arts and cultural escape, with a nod to our local producers.

This year’s festival kicked o last Friday, with its signature event in Millthorpe

Wproviding a hearty energy throughout the village.

Orange 360’s general manager Ned Sweetapple says the festival is becoming a feature event for Orange, with a combination of performance and music with the region’s great wine and produce sector.

“We want to bring our arts and culture, and heritage to the table as much as our food and wine is, and o er a very wellrounded festival,” Ned explained.

“We are really working towards having it as a bit of a fun; alternative; whimsical; magical, and a bit serious event. It’s not about performance and all those sorts of things, but about creating a warp out of cold. That tends to be the take on some of the events that people have created, some of the shenanigans we’ll see throughout the festival.”

Sticking to the theme is the team at Small Acres Cyder, who are back with their Wassail event. Traditionally, the orchard wassail refers to the ancient custom of visiting orchards, reciting incantations, and singing to the trees in order to encourage healthy harvest for the next season. Owner Nick Geoghegan said they wanted to have a bit of fun and welcome patrons to participate in something a bit out of the ordinary.

“It goes back centuries, a ritual, festival kind of event. And it’s all about preparing the orchard for the following year. We’ll bang pots to scare away evil spirits, sing songs, and sprinkle cider on the apple trees,” Nick said.

While he hasn’t attended a wassail in the UK where they are traditionally held, he has certainly heard all about them.

“I’m from Ireland, and they don’t do them

there,” he said. “But I read so much about them, and it’s a really cidery thing to do. I just thought it’d be awesome to do and the Orange Winter Fire Festival was a perfect match.”

A traditional fire festival wouldn’t be complete without live music, so keep your ears pricked throughout the region.

Tonight (August 10) you can catch Handpicked (featuring some of Orange’s most prominent rock musicians including Kyle Manning; Luke Ferguson; Dave Egan, and Travis New) singing about how we didn’t start the fire, the girl that’s on fire, and even the ring of fire.

As we welcome in the last weekend of the Orange Winter Fire Festival, we hope the weather gods do the region justice and let the rain hold o until after the bonfires are smouldering.

Record passenger numbers through Orange airport

A record number of passengers has come through Orange Regional Airport in the last year, and council says it has a lot to do with a rise in tourism.

A report at last week’s council meeting outlined that 8071 passengers used the airport in June this year, compared with 7308 in June 2022. This brings the total figure in the last financial year up to 91,552 passengers. More than 10,000 greater than the previous record of 79,240 in 2018-19.

Orange City Council Chair of the

Infrastructure Committee and Airport Committee Jack Evans says that Orange has continued to grow as a tourist destination during these last few years.

“We’ve seen people from the east coast really get the taste for the region. And with our three airlines operating out of the airport, it’s made Orange really accessible to areas that have already had the taste, and they’ve really just jumped on that,” Cr Evans explained.

Qantas, REX, and Linked Airways all operate out of Orange Regional Airport, and include three capital cities in their

destinations: Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Cr Evans told Orange City Life that a lot of investment is going into the airport, in hopes to attract even more travellers, and set a good example for the region.

“We’ve got a lot of investment going out there, we’re getting a second aircraft refueling station, new LED lights, the sta out there have really worked hard to make it a great representation for our city,” he said.

“We’ve done a bit of work on the road getting out there, we got a decent sized

grant from the state government just prior to the election to fix up some of the road.”

But next on the agenda is encouraging airlines to consider linking Orange with other regional destinations, says Mr Evans.

“The location we are working on at the minute is Newcastle, and trying to work on some numbers and statistics to get an Orange-Newcastle link opened up. Obviously it’s a nice drive, but to have the convenience of a flight would be really good.”

Orange might just be the next hot spot for regional air travel.

WINTER FIRE FESTIVAL STARTS WITH A BANG!

The 2023 Orange Region Winter Fire Festival got underway on Friday, August 4 with an evening of food, wine, beer, and live music in the historic village of Millthorpe!

Pym Street was a hive of activity for the Millthorpe Fire Fair which closed the evening with a spectacular fireworks display.

CROSS purposes Set or reset?

WITH SUELLEN MILHAM

The cruise control on my car has two settings – ‘set’ or ‘reset’. It has taken me a while to work these out. It seemed to me that ‘reset’ would give me the opportunity to begin again, choose a new speed, but it doesn’t. Reset takes me back to the speed I was previously doing. I need to hit ‘set’ if I want there to be a new start. Argh!

Sometimes this same confusion overflows into life choices. Making a decision to change may actually be like hitting the ‘reset’ button and plunge us back to the same old patterns or behaviours when we thought we could change. God says we have hearts of stone when we ignore him. Hard and impenetrable stone that makes it impossible for us to live as He created us unless our hearts are set on a totally new course. It is Jesus Christ who can change our heart’s set point. He is the di erence between resetting and getting set for eternity. One man who died for the sins of the world, bringing heart change, from stone to new life.

HORSES’ BIRTHDAY OPEN DAY AT RIDING FOR THE DISABLED ORANGE

It was a big day out at the Riding for the Disabled Orange (RDA) centre at Clifton Grove last Wednesday as local children and their parents celebrated the Horses’ Birthday, traditionally held on August 1 each year.

The young riders celebrated with a birthday cake after treating their mounts to a tasty carrot for their special day.

The Open Day was also an opportunity for parents and friends to come along to see a demonstration of the children’s riding skills, and for potential new volunteers to come and get familiar with the work of the RDA team.

COMMUNITY SLEEPOUT TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS OF HOMELESSNESS

Orange City Council staff and local teens from the Orange Youth Hub are getting ready to take part in the annual Vinnies Community Sleep Out.

The St Vincent de Paul Society will hold the sleepout on Friday night, 25 August, at Orange Uniting Church, 217 Anson Street. By sleeping rough for a night, the team aims to raise awareness and muchneeded funds to assist Vinnies in providing support to those in our community who

need it the most. All funds raised will go to the Orange Vinnies Van.

The fundraising goal is $10,000.

Orange City Council Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell, encouraged members of the community to support the team by making a donation, or consider joining the sleepout and raising much needed funds in the fight against homelessness.

“There are more than 122,000

Australians experiencing homelessness. Homelessness shows itself in many ways, affecting individuals and families from all walks of life. Whether it’s people couchsurfing for safety or individuals grappling with mental health concerns, this event sheds light on the diverse nature of this crisis,” Cr McDonell said.

“I encourage everyone to show their support and encourage their friends, colleagues and or family members to

contribute.

“The sleepout not only fosters awareness but also helps us to understand the issues faced by those experiencing homelessness daily. It is an opportunity to connect with the reality that so many endure.

Thisweek, the parliamentary inquiry into the response of insurers to recent natural disasters was formalised in the Australian Parliament.

I am glad that the experiences of our storm and flood-hit residents, who faced horrific torrents of water only to be hung out to dry by their insurance companies, will be heard.

Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones confirmed this in Question Time, saying that it was through visiting our region, and listening to the stories of our disaster-hit residents and business owners, that made him see that a broader scope for the inquiry was needed.

This inquiry must be a pivotal moment in the way insurers deal with disasterhit policyholders. Their cruelty, in denying claim after claim in our devastated communities, must be brought to light. Change needs to come from this.

It’s interesting that just as I have been pushing for this inquiry the Insurance Council of Australia has hired consulting firm Deloitte do its own “review”.

They are apparently in Cabonne over the next couple of days. The Deloitte review is totally separate from the parliamentary inquiry and the two should not be confused.

People are obviously free to make up their own minds but I’m not having anything to do with the Insurance Council of Australia/Deloitte review. To me it’s the big end of town reviewing the big end of town. And I don’t represent the big end of town.

If I thought their review would result in anything meaningful to help our storm and flood hit residents I would support it. But it looks to me like a box ticking exercise for the insurance industry. How about less conversation and more action on approving claims.

I’m hoping to get the actual parliamentary inquiry out to our areas to take evidence soon.

Iwas honoured to represent our area at the Garma Festival 2023. It was a privilege to be a part of it, and I sure did learn a lot.

The Garma Festival is Australia’s largest Indigenous gathering. It’s a four day celebration of Yolngu life held in remote north east Arnhem Land.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Aussie screen icon Jack Thompson. We spoke about his close connection to the Territory and the Yolngu people and how he helped fight against the NT

We also talked Breaker Morant. Jack played soldier/solicitor Major James Thomas (a tragic figure whose life was never the same after the Morant trial) and I thought his portrayal did the Major justice.

Andrew with Jack Thompson Congratulations Phoebe!

WHY IS THE VOICE NECESSARY?

It’s hard to believe, but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in our nation’s founding document. This wrong must be made right. The Voice provides that recognition in a meaningful way.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower life expectancy, higher suicide rates, higher infant mortality rates, and worse educational outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. The gap isn’t closing, and despite well-intentioned governments, the current approach isn’t working.

In the modern, prosperous Australia of 2023, how can this be acceptable?

We need to change it up. The Voice is about listening and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Australia.

BUT DON’T WE ALREADY HAVE INDIGENOUS PARLIAMENTARIANS?

We do, but like governments, individual parliamentarians come and go, and they represent parties. The Voice would be independent and be above partisan party politics. Having it in the Constitution provides independence, consistency, and continuity.

IS THE VOICE LEGALLY AND CONSTITUTIONALLY SOUND?

Yes. A host of constitutional law experts and organisations have given the Voice the tick of approval as being legally and constitutionally sound, including:

• Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French

• Former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne

• Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC

• Leading constitutional law professors

• The Solicitor General of Australia

• New South Wales Bar Association

• The Law Society of New South Wales

• The Law Council of Australia

• The University of Sydney Law School

• Flinders University Law school

• The University of New South Wales

• Adelaide Law School

• University of Queensland constitutional lawyers

• Gilbert & Tobin Lawyers

WILL THE VOICE “GUM UP” THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITH COURT CHALLENGES AND STOP BUDGETS, CHANGE ANZAC DAY, TAKE LAND, BAN FISHING, STOP NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE CONTRACTS OR CREATE A SEPARATE STATE? No.

WILL THE VOICE HAVE THE POWER OF VETO OVER LEGISLATION?

Myth busted. There is no veto. This means it would have no power to overrule Parliament, and any advice it gives would be non-binding.

WILL THE VOICE BE A THIRD CHAMBER OF PARLIAMENT?

No. Myth Busted. The Voice can’t and won’t introduce bills or run programs. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament.

are ludicrous.

WHO WILL BE ON THE VOICE?

Members of the Voice will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and serve for a fixed period. It will include Indigenous Australians from every state and territory, the Torres Strait Islands and representatives from the regions and remote communities. It will be subject to the rules made for it by Parliament.

WHY CAN’T WE PUT THE RULES OF THE VOICE IN THE CONSTITUTION?

Because our Constitution provides the broad framework for governing our country and we leave it to our elected representatives via the Parliament to pass legislation about details such as rules.

For example, in 1901 the Constitution gave the Australian Government the power to set up a High Court and other courts. It wasn’t until 1903 that Parliament established the High Court through legislation. Then in 1975 the Parliament set up the Family

Court through legislation. Another example is that in 1901 the Constitution gave the Commonwealth the power over currency but left it to the Parliament to work out things like what the notes are and what they look like. In 1910 a law about notes was passed. Banknotes finally got issued in 1913.

The Voice will be set up by the Parliament and subject to its rules.

DOES THE VOICE GIVE ANYONE SPECIAL RIGHTS?

No. Myth busted. The Voice does not give any group any special rights. It’s an advisory body that doesn’t give any rights to anyone. This has been confirmed by eminent constitutional lawyers and former High Court judges.

ISN’T THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS AGENCY (NIAA) THE SAME AS

THE VOICE?

No. Not at all. Myth busted.

Unlike the proposed Voice, the NIAA is not independent of government, it’s part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Only 22% of its staff are Indigenous. It can be abolished at the stroke of a pen. It can’t give advice to the Parliament.

Oh and the NIAA doesn’t have a $30 billion budget (another myth busted there on the way through).

WOULD THE VOICE STOP ME DIGGING A HOLE IN MY GARDEN OR ON MY FARM?

able to force the Parliament to do anything it doesn’t want to do. The vegie garden is quite safe.

I’M SAYING YES!

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

OLD

One of my oldest friends spent last week in Orange after starting a new and mostly remote role with her work. She flew in Tuesday afternoon and came for dinner that night. Both girls were excited to see her, although it’s been years since the last time we were all together. They were also very confused by the dinner situation…

“Oooooh fancy guest time! What are we having for dinner?” asks Miss Nine, hoping to hear my plans for a three-course meal with elaborate dessert. “Um, lasagne,” I say to a bitterly disappointed child. She does love lasagne by the way, but was hoping for something requiring cloth napkins and maybe a tiramisu.

“Shall we mop?” asks Miss 14, and I hug her tightly for being a 14-year-old who is thoughtful, kind and so, so helpful.

But then I laugh as I explain that Amanda and I lived together for years, she has three kids of her own and it’s Tuesday and I worked all day.

“There are some people you just don’t have to mop for,” I say with a shrug.

But, you know what the best thing is about seeing an old friend? It’s that you feel so, so young with them. Before I was defined by marriage, motherhood and career I used to be Emily. And don’t get me wrong, I love my life now, but ‘Once Upon a Time’ Amanda and I were 18, living in the nurse’s quarters at Camden Hospital while at Uni (we paid $32 rent a week for our entire degrees, in case you need a reminder of how terrible things are for young people these days).

We drove cars bought for less than $1200, that we paid for working weekends at a nursing home. We wore boob tubes, planned to marry Heath Ledger and the only thing we spent money on was Midori Splices at endless Spiderbait, Superjesus, Magic Dirt, Something for Kate, Jebediah and Whitlams concerts with our friends Jo, Carmen, Kate and Erin.

Similarly, our husbands were trade apprentices together, and I met Hubby when Amanda’s boyfriendat-the-time (they’ve now been married for 19 years) brought him home to our shared post-uni beach flat. Miss Nine planned to “get dirt” on me and produced a list of questions to ask about my past. She tried being cute, she tried bribery and she tried flattery. But Amanda refused to reveal anything, delivering a truth that Miss Nine had never heard before: “I’m team Emily.”

And so, I’ve spent the last week listening to the best music of 1998 (as the kids complain that I still somehow know every word of The Superjesus’ album Rock Music but forget their names daily. “No I don’t, Miss 14,” I say to an annoyed Miss Nine) while hanging out with one of the few people who knows all of my secrets and loves me anyway.

It’s been the best week I’ve had in ages, and such a nice break from ‘Mum’.

“But Muuuuuuum,” Miss Nine complains. “Make her tell about you!”

“You know who else’s secrets she knows?” I ask my stubborn child. “Dad’s...”

Jamón: The taste of a Spanish

One of you asked me what is the di erence between all the types of Spanish jamón, our word for ham? (By the way, it is pronounced with a strong “HAH” plus emphasis on the second syllable “MON”.) Well, it is a big topic for me, so I’ll try to summarise it as short and clear as I can.

Basically, there are two main types of jamón: we have Jamón Serrano and Jamón Ibérico. But hold on one second Rubén… we’re talking about prosciutto, right? No. I’m talking about Spanish-cured pigs that cannot be confused with Italian breeds and ways of feeding them.

Spanish Jamón Serrano is the most common one you may have heard of, the one that can be found all over the world, even here in town! However, the star of Spanish Jamón is the Iberian one, a must-try product for those who love the world of gastronomy.

OK, so the first thing to learn about Jamon is what part of the animal we are talking about? We need to di erentiate the front legs of the animal, called paletilla from the back legs called pata. Obviously, the back legs have better quality meat and, for that reason, they will always be better and more expensive.

So Rubén, what´s the real di erence between Jamón Serrano and Iberico then?

Well, Jamón Serrano comes from white pigs. These are pigs that are raised on farms and fed on cereals. The curing time of the legs of Jamón Serrano in salt can go from 10 to 12 months (called Bodega), 12 to 15 months (called Reserva) and more than 15 months (called Gran Reserva).

And then we have Jamón ibérico, which comes from the Iberian pig, a native and unique animal from the Iberian Peninsula. Depending on the percentage of Iberian breed that the pig has, and the food it receives, there are di erent types of Jamón Iberico as well.

There are four grades of Jamón Iberico, categorised primarily by the diet of the pigs. The curing process remains the same, but the length for which they are aged will di er, with the lower grade hams receiving little more than a year of hanging and the very best up to four years. If you ever go to Spain, you´ll see that all those di erences are easily explained with the labels of quality: white label being the lower grade, moving up to the green label, red label and finally black label.

So the important thing to learn today is that the back leg of a Jamón Iberico with the black label is the

Rolls Royce of cured meats. No one will argue that! If you ever try that, it would be an experience that you won’t forget easily, because these pigs are freerange and eat a lot of acorns and elements of their natural ecosystem, which impacts the meat directly, giving them a unique nutty, delicious marbling with an evocative flavour.

Do you know how to slice jamón properly? Well, this is the key di erence between Spain and Australia. The legs of jamón must be sliced lengthwise in order to fully appreciate the quality of the meat. The slices must be small pieces, as thin as you can, so the temperature of your own tongue makes it melt in your mouth. Did you know that there is a profession called maestros jamoneros? Well, these crazy talented guys are able to cut the whole leg in front of you with pieces that are symmetrical, creating beautiful patterns on a plate.

The next question is, where can we get jamón in Orange? Well, luckily in every supermarket in town you will be able to find Jamón Serrano.

And most importantly, how should we eat it? Well, there are hundreds of recipes in Spanish gastronomy. But today I’m going to share the dish that makes me salivate every single time. No kidding, I love this supereasy combo, above other elaborations that are more complicated.

I’m talking about the homemade bocadillo de jamón, which literally means a ham sandwich. A favourite for many, many people regardless of age, background, social status, etc. Make a delicious crispy bocadillo of jamón with extra virgin olive oil and grated tomato for your family and they will be in heaven.

But how special can a jamón sandwich be, you may be wondering? Well give it a try yourself! This is a very easy recipe that doesn’t really need a list of ingredients. Buy a freshly baked and crispy baguette, grate delicious ripened tomatoes, add locally made extra virgin olive oil, and finish up with thin slices of jamón! You‘ll love it!

Did you know this combo is how we start our day in Spain? That‘s right, this is one of our favourite brekkies. Add to it a freshly squeezed orange juice and you could be right now in Spanish summer ready to go to the beach.

Emerging local artist Caz Mackenzie is on her way

It was after having her first child, says Caz Mackenzie, that she realised she needed to do something 'just for me'.

Looking for a creative outlet, Caz took some 1-on-1 painting lessons with her friend Nicky, an art teacher and now owner of the art supply store, The Little Art Nook.

And that was it; Caz was hooked! Continually looking to learn and grow, Caz has been developing her own 'style' over the last five years.

Her new exhibition 'On My Way' is an expression of the landscape near and far; as well as her creative journey to becoming an artist.

Caz loves to paint vibrant and contemporary landscapes in acrylic and watercolour. Often adding bright and happy colours to her paintings.

Inspiration for her art often comes from momentary glimpses out a car window on a

Sunday drive in the country with her husband and two children; which evokes memories of her own childhood.

She is often seen with her mini portable watercolour kit, painting and sketching whenever possible. She loves the rolling hills, clouds, vast open skies, and sunsets of rural Australia.

Her art is uncomplicated and something beautiful for viewers to enjoy, perhaps sparking their own memories and imagination.

Caz is the Orange Art Society’s August feature artist. All are welcome to attend the o cial opening of her exhibition 'On My Way' at Orange Art Society gallery on Sunday, August 13, from 2–4 pm. Scan the QR code to RSVP

That gallery is located in the Cultural Centre, with access from the Woolworths Carpark opposite Harris Farm.

‘On My Way’ will remain on display in the gallery until September 8.

Original bank chambers (currently a gallery) which still houses the functioning bank vault Multiple living spaces, a functional kitchen and breakfast room

Independent owners’ accommodation which has its own bedroom, lounge, and bathroom.

Four large and grand bedrooms (three of which have ensuites and the king room has a large modern bathroom adjacent)

18* foot high ceilings, original fireplaces, and three have access to the spacious veranda with views of the breath taking gardens.

Set on a total 1985*sqm of land over 3 separate titles the art studio, cottage, and framing studio. The cottage is self contained with two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge, kitchenette, and climate control options. The historic former stables have been converted into a reknowned art studio, and the modern framing studio already has a bathroom and other provisions in place so that it can easily be converted into extra accommodation.

WE NEEDVolunteers

ORANGE PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

At our July meeting we viewed a video of the newest radiation treatment for prostate cancer being practised in major hospitals across NSW. It is remarkable the advances that have been made in a very short time. With the prostate nurse Lindy Ostini in attendance, we were able to have a discussion on radiation treatment here in Orange and we were surprised that the treatment available in Orange is equal to that shown, as Orange Hospital has updated its equipment and the specialists speaking in the video visit Orange hospital to perform the procedures.

We may now have all the latest diagnostic and treatment available in Orange BUT if men do not get tested the death rate from prostate cancer will rise from the current 10 deaths a day across Australia. The latest figures show that 24,217 men were diagnosed in 2022. One in five men are a ected by prostate cancer.

To all families, if the male in your household is 50 or over or there is a history of prostate cancer in the family, please encourage him to ask his GP for a simple blood test.

If you would like to learn more, you are welcome to attend our meetings and have a chat or call Ray 6362-5257; Charlie 6361-1830; or call the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia 1800-22-00-99.

BIRTHDAYS

I don’t know what it is about this time of the year, but in my immediate and extended family, there are a whole string of birthdays. We have something like a dozen birthdays all falling within the period running from early June to early August. Each year we are shocked at the amount. As my extended family continues to grow, we will no doubt be squeezing more and more birthdays into the calendar at this time of the year. Our middle child celebrated a birthday this week. The look of joy on his face as he opened his presents was something we will treasure for a long time. Celebrating birthdays is a special moment in our lives. My wife and I have been reflecting this week on the birthdays we celebrated when we were growing up. I still remember with fondness the pirate ship my dad (a retired art teacher and artist) made. Or throwing water balloons at a lifesized Roman Centurion after my friends and I drank some ‘magic potion’ (which was just red cordial) at my Asterix birthday party through to the elation of staying up for a whole night with my mates on my fifteenth birthday, only to su er the consequences on the hockey field the next day. Birthdays are special. Besides the fun of celebrating and being thankful for surviving another orbit around the sun, there is also the joy of stopping and reflecting on what you have learnt, how you have changed, what it is that has shaped you more as a person over the past twelve months. It is a strange part of our lives that we

cannot escape. As we get older, the joy and excitement we once had when we celebrated our birthday is now replaced with a sense of dread, groans and another visit to the GP. Maybe we will start to lie about our age like the character Fran Fine in the 90s sitcom The Nanny who says her age is 29 throughout all six seasons. As I continue to grow older and say goodbye to my youth and think about the road ahead I am reminded about how The Bible speaks about age and growing older. In Proverbs 16:31, it says this: ‘Gray hair is a crown of splendour; it is attained in the way of righteousness.’ What does this mean? It means that we should not despair or even despise our birthdays when they roll around. Rather, as we continue to grow older, we can think about all that we know, all we have learnt, but also what we can give and pass onto those who are younger. But there is something else hinted at in these verses when it speaks of a crown. It is a fleeting glance at what becomes even clearer later in The Bible, where Jesus speaks about the crown of life that is the image of one who has chosen what is wise in their life – putting their faith in Jesus. That is something that each of us must consider as we walk through life. Perhaps if you are celebrating a birthday this week –firstly, happy birthday – you might like to pause and think about life in light of eternity.

THUMBS DOWN to every business that doesn’t accept cash. Cash is legal tender. When will people realise that this is bringing us closer to a society where every move you make is tracked?

THUMBS UP to Hudson from Windoor for the great care and service in the design and supply of replica windows for a very old building. Thumbs Up also to Colin Devine for the installation of those same windows. Two highly skilled, professional and reliable gentlemen.

THUMBS UP to Country Fruit Distributors in McNamara Lane. Excellent service, high quality produce and extra care in carrying the box to the car.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Orange Auto Glass for friendly, fast and e cient customer service and booking vehicles for repair. Recommend this locally owned and operated business.

THUMBS DOWN to the person in the silver Hilux who did a shocking park outside Mad Hatters, put on their hazards, and proceeded to go order their co ee.

THUMBS UP to Liam, one of the lifeguards at the pool, who was so polite to me whilst making my co ee — and made a very good co ee as well I might add. Good to see!

A BIG THUMBS UP and thank you to the good Samaritan who handed in my phone at North Orange Woolworths on August 2. It was very much appreciated! You don’t realise how much we rely on our phones until you don’t have them. Thanks again!

THUMBS DOWN to the delivery driver who shoved my parcel in my tiny mailbox, rather than the designated safe area.

THUMBS UP to the beautiful young girls who stopped to care for me after my car accident at the corner of Lords Place and Prince Street on July 5. Sorry it’s taken so long. I got a fractured sternum, but on the mend now. Thank you all!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council and those responsible for the ugly retaining wall on the far side of Lake Canobolas. Wasted opportunity to make the sand area/beach bigger but now appears narrower and smaller thanks to the ugly wall.

THUMBS UP to everyone involved in the Ultimate Rock Crawling event held near Molong at the end of July. The location and camping area was great. The event was really well organised and the facilities catered well for all people – young and old, 4x4 enthusiasts, and people new to the sport. Such a great event for the whole region. Hopefully the first year of many more to come!

THUMBS

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for closing o Shiralee Road, putting in a detour via Racecourse Road and Pinnacle Road then doing road works on Racecourse Road and Pinnacle Road with the red light system. No happy residents up here!

THUMBS UP to the ladies and gents who helped me when I had a fall in the Kmart car park recently, and also to the paramedics who came to my aid. We appreciate your help. It shows that there are still good people in the world.

THUMBS UP to Richie Rich, an estimator at Taberners Windows and Doors, a true gentleman. He is so lovely he could be a priest!

THUMBS UP to Amanda and her team at Millthorpe Pharmacy for providing extraordinary customer service and care to patients and clients. We are so lucky to have such wonderful people supporting and taking care of us in our local community.

THUMBS UP to the recycling service employee who assisted my elderly neighbour with their garbage bins. A small part of your day that means so much!

TIME WARP with ORANGE

AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A party to remember

This family gathering was in honour of Alice McGlashan of North Street, Orange, who celebrated her 89th birthday in June 1959. Alice’s late husband Archibald was a well-known railway worker in the district. Alice reared a family of four daughters and ten sons, and had 64 grandchildren, 112 great-grandchildren and 20 greatgreat-grandchildren. The two boys in the photo, Noel and Steven, were greatgreat-grandchildren.
