Wenty golfers get first walk-through of new multi-million dollar clubhouse

entworth Golf Club members got their first look at the new multimillion dollar clubhouse and it’s fair to say they’re impressed!

Last Wednesday, July 26, dozens of golfers took up the invitation to have a walk-through of the building site and you could feel the excitement in the air.

It has now been four years since fire destroyed the former clubhouse and golfers have had to make do with temporary facilities since. Taking in the stunning views over the Wentworth course, Golf Committee President Lee Pickett was thrilled to finally see the new building taking shape.

“From the bottom looking up, it’s big. But from the top looking down, it’s just magnificent!” Lee said.

“Just look at the magnificent view that everybody’s going to get across that 18th hole... I can’t wait, really! To have a clubhouse back, It’s just so exciting because it completes the round.”

WIt was hoped that the new $20 million-plus building would be ready by Christmas 2023, but the construction was delayed when it was discovered that the site was sitting on solid rock forcing changes to the structural plan of the foundations. Rain and supply issues cause further delays, but if all goes well the new Wentworth Golf Club should be open around Easter 2024.

Orange Ex-Services’ Club CEO Nathan White said it’s great to have the opportunity to show their members the progress that’s being made at the site.

“In this instance, we put it out to all our golfing members and then, closer to Christmas, we’ll probably look to do it again when the walls are up and there’s a bit more of a roof happening, and we’ll put it out there to the general public a bit more,” he said.

Once complete, Nathan said it will be an impressive venue unlike anything else in Orange.

“This view, looking north over the 18th green and the fairways!” he said. “As you walk through the front door, you’re looking out these floor-toceiling windows and the outlook is going to blow people away!”

Golden career of Orange City greenkeeper Mark Byrnes

“I started here in 1972,” says Orange City Bowling Club’s long-serving greenkeeper, Mark Byrnes, who has finally decided to hang up the tools after a career spanning five decades.

“It was 50 years and seven months actually, but who’s counting?” says Mark, who remembers interviewing for the apprentice job at the club upon finishing Year 10 at the former De La Salle College.

“They said, ‘yes’, but [the current apprentice] was not leaving until November. So, I went back to school for x amount of months, then finished school on the 31st of October and started here on the first of November, 1972. I finished school on Wednesday and was here on Thursday,” recalls Mark.

“I did my apprenticeship here, then became an assistant here and then, obviously, I got the greenkeeper’s job

here…. A lot of the bowlers thought I was a bit young, but we had a president by the name of Dave Brown, who thought, ‘Well, give him a go. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out.’ And 50 years later, it worked out!”

Over these past 50 years, Mark has seen plenty of changes at the club and on the greens themselves.

“I think I’ve trained… I think it’s about 11 apprentices — and 11 secretary managers!” he adds.

“But the club’s been very good to me. I’ve always got on well with committees and presidents... It has been good in the last 20 years, the presidents and the committee would come out and say, ‘Mark, is there anything you need?’ They wouldn’t say, ‘Mark, do that, do that…’

“And we’ve done a lot of changes out

here. Changed a lot of grasses over, di erent varieties from bench to cooches to Tifs and finally to the artificial… They’ve spent money out here!”

The money spent and Mark’s e orts have certainly been appreciated by hundreds, if not thousands, of bowlers over the years.

“I’ve had a very good career here. It’s been very good,” says Mark, who just felt now was the right time to retire.

“I think you just know. I’ll be 68 next month, so it’s just time to move on. I’ve had my time here. I’ve got five grandchildren and my wife and two boys. It was time,” he says.

“Greenkeeping, it’s seven days a week. A lot of people don’t realise that you’re here seven days a week and you’re doing 4550 hours a week and seven days and you don’t get your full run of holidays.”

Since finishing up at the Club four weeks ago, Mark has been enjoying his time away from the greens.

While he has no immediate plans, Mark is very sure of what he won’t be doing with his retirement.

“I won’t be taking up golf and I won’t be taking up bowls,” he says with conviction. “I’ll just stick to my bikes.”

Mark does have a few travel destinations in mind and strangely there seems to be a “grass” theme...

“I’d like to go to Japan for the gardens. I’d like to go back to New Zealand and over to England… maybe for some sporting events over there: The Ashes, I’d like to go to Wimbledon and also I’d like to go to Augusta.”

Enjoy your retirement. Mark!

NEW DOWNTOWN DIGS FOR DONATO GOVERNOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES VISITS ORANGE

Member for Orange Phil Donato has left his former Byng Street o ces and set up shop in Lords Place.

The new o ces at 194a Lords Place have far greater space, with multiple meeting rooms and better accessibility for wheelchair users.

The move had been coming for several years, Phil said, but as the o ce is a parliamentary asset it had taken time to find suitable premises that met all the right criteria.

“Apparently our old o ce was the second-smallest parliamentary electorate o ce that they had across the state,” Phil said.

“It took a long time to find something suitable, that ticked all the boxes... We’re still waiting on a few bits of furniture and bits and pieces, but overall it’s a pretty nice o ce and our door is open!”

Much of the day-to-day work of an MP involves handling requests for assistance from local people, trying to solve these problems or advocating on their behalf.

You never know what is going to walk through your door each day, Phil said.

“It’s a fairly wide and varied role and we’ve had some pretty serious matters come through the door that have been very sensitive and confidential all the way through to really sort of minor type of matters,” he said

“It’s really anything that’s impacting on the constituents that they feel that they need assistance with or advice or guidance that we can represent them or listen to them, meet with them, try and sort out their issues or their problems.

“Whether it’s roads, whether it’s local government, whether it’s health, education, transport… any state government-related issue.

“We can’t fix everyone’s problem, I never say I can, but at least I can be a sounding board, listen to people, see what we can do to help them. We certainly will try and we’ve had some good results and good outcomes over the years.”

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, and Mr Dennis Wilson are in Orange today (Thursday, August 3) and will tour the region over the next two days.

The Governor and Mr Wilson will be visiting Eugowra, Canowindra, and Millthorpe before concluding their trip in Cowra on Saturday, where the Governor will attend events commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Cowra Breakout.

Today in Orange, the Governor and Mr Wilson are scheduled to meet sta , volunteers, and clients of The Orchard domestic violence refuge, hear from members of Orange City Council, and visit Wangarang Industries. They will also engage with sta and students at Nashdale Public School, along with facilitators of the Life Education NSW Mobile Learning Centre, tour the Agricultural Institute, and visit the Aboriginal Medical Service and Charles Sturt University, where they will attend a reception held in conjunction with Education Week.

In Eugowra, the Governor and Mr Wilson will meet with the Eugowra Flood Recovery Committee and tour areas impacted by the 2022 floods.

In Canowindra, they will visit the Age of Fishes Museum and meet with members of the Canowindra Branch of the CWA.

On Friday night, the Governor and Mr Wilson will attend the Millthorpe Fire Fair.

Winter Fire Festival set to burn bright Millthorpe Fire Fair gets things started this Friday!

The 2023 Orange Region Winter Fire Festival gets underway this Friday, August 4 with an evening of food, wine, beer, live music and fireworks in the village of Millthorpe!

The Millthorpe Fire Fair is the opening event for what is the biggest Winter Fire Festival program to date, with more than 30 separate events around the region between August 4-13. This year’s festival features fireside cook-ups, live music performances, film screenings, author panels, and quirky bonfire events harking back to ancient rituals.

It is a festival that’s only going to get bigger, says Orange360 general manager Ned Sweetapple, who is excited about the future of the event.

Founded in 2018, the Fire Festival is the smaller of the four seasonal festivals in the Orange region, winter traditionally being a slower period for tourists to the district.

But Ned believes the festival has so much potential to grow and sees it developing its own unique identity and becoming a real drawcard for the region.

“We know at Orange360 and across the region, we know how events and festivals really boost interest in the region and boost visitor numbers to the region. August is one of our slowest months in terms of visitors… So this festival has really got great potential to grow,” she said.

“And it provides the platform in which we can start to incorporate our other, what we call ‘destination pillars’, beyond food and wine, bringing the arts and culture and heritage to the fore as well.

“That’s where we’re looking to be able to grow the Fire Festival to incorporate art and culture and heritage as well as our traditional strong suits, which are food and wine.”

For everything creative in the Colour City there’s

The Little Art Nook

Local artist and art supply store owner, Nicky Macqueen, is on a mission to inspire and encourage the next generation of artists here in the Colour City. Whether you are a working professional, enthusiastic amateur or taking up art for the first time, at The Little Art Nook you will find everything you need to bring your vision to life.

The Little Art Nook first opened in Orange in April last year, but has since found a new home in the Orange Arcade. It all came about because Nicky was having difficulty sourcing the quality art supplies she needed for her own work.

“It was very difficult as an artist myself to find the supplies I wanted, so I thought I’d bring them to Orange,” Nicky said.

Raised in Orange, Nicky graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from what was then

known as the College of Fine Arts (COFA), Sydney in 2007. She then left our shores to explore the world and exhibited her art in New York, London, Barcelona and Paris.

As an artist who works with printing and mixed media, it was those supplies in particular, Nicky was having trouble finding locally, but The Little Art Nook caters for all artists no matter what their preferred medium.

“Printmaking stuff was hard to find, and just a good range of like paints,” Nicky said.

“So here you’ll find quality acrylic paints, oils, watercolours, all the papers… We also stock a lot of vinyl products for crafters that have cutting machines like the Cricuts. Beads for jewellery making. We’ve got a bit of everything, really and if people are looking for particular things, I can try and source it for them.”

The Little Art Nook also has a wide range of children’s craft supplies, with lots of pom-

poms, feathers, pipe-cleaners and the like, as well as activity and painting packs. For those, young or old, who are wanting to grow their artistic talents, Nicky runs weekly art classes throughout the school term.

“On Monday afternoons it’s the five to eight-year-olds and then Tuesday it’s nine to 12-year-olds, and we do holiday classes as well in school holidays,” Nicky said.

“We do a range of things, a range of mediums from acrylic paint to watercolours, oils, pastels, mixed media and drawing as well. I try to teach a range across the term so that they’re learning new techniques and tips.”

On Thursday nights, Nicky also teaches a hand-building pottery class for adults and is also available for one-on-one instruction, group classes, or Saturday party bookings — just give her a call!

LEGACY CENTENARY TORCH RELAY ARRIVES IN ORANGE

On Saturday, July 29, the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay made its way through the streets of Orange to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the organisation dedicated to helping the widows and children of our nation’s veterans.

The six-month Legacy Centenary Torch Relay started out in Pozières, France on April 23. It has since travelled to Menin Gate, Belgium, London, and around Australia. The relay will finish at the founding home of Legacy in Melbourne on October 13.

In Orange, local torchbearers braved cool, damp conditions as they carried the flame to Robertson Park for the lighting of a ceremonial cauldron. For more information on the relay or to find out how you can support Legacy, visit www.legacytorchrelay.com.au

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS

Think FAST for signs of stroke

Next week is National Stroke Week (August 7-13) and the National Stroke Foundation is encouraging the community to fight stroke together. Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers. Each day, over 100 Australians have a stroke. Regional Australians are 17% more likely to suffer stroke than those living in major cities.

What is a stroke?

Stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain either becomes suddenly blocked (ischaemic stroke) or ruptures and bleeds (haemorrhagic stroke). Stroke can cause part of the brain to die, leading to problems with speech, thinking, movement and communication. Stroke is often fatal or can cause significant disability.

Who is at risk?

Stroke can happen to anyone at any age but high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and an irregular heartbeat like atrial fibrillation, increases the risk of stroke.

Think F.A.S.T.

Think F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke:

Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms Can they lift both arms?

Speech is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

Time is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.

A stroke is always a medical emergency.

If you think someone may be suffering a stroke, call 000 immediately.

Other signs of a stroke may include weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding, dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall, sudden loss or decrease in vision, severe headache, or difficulty swallowing.

Signs of stroke may disappear within a short time, even within a few minutes. When this happens, it may be a transient ischaemic attack (TIA). After a TIA, your risk of stroke

is higher. A TIA is a warning that you may have a stroke and gives an opportunity to prevent this from happening.

Prevention

More than 80% of strokes can be prevented. The first step to preventing a stroke is a check-up with your GP who can assess your personal and family history along with blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rhythm and risk of diabetes. You can also reduce your own risk of stroke by staying active, eating well, reducing alcohol, and quitting smoking.

If you have any concerns or questions about your stroke risk, reach out to your GP and remember to Think F.A.S.T. and Act

Does your best friend have bad breath?!

Imagine how your mouth would feel and smell if you never brushed your teeth!

Imagine having a bad toothache but not being able to tell anyone. Dental disease affects as many as 8 out of 10 pets – it’s often hidden, but can have serious effects on the overall health of your pet. Dogs, cats and rabbits need regular dental check ups to look for signs of dental disease, and save them from the pain of bad teeth.

Just like humans, our pets are vulnerable to gum disease and problems with teeth. This leads to bad breath, pain, loss of teeth, trouble feeding and affects your pet’s entire health. Alarmingly, 80% of dogs suffer from some form of dental disease by the age of 3! There are links between pet dental disease, and pet kidney and heart disease. So if we can pick up on dental disease early, we can prevent further damage to your pet’s teeth and health.

Your pet will benefit from a regular dental check up. This month, your cat, dog or rabbit can have a FREE dental check up with one of our friendly vet nurses. If your pet needs treatment, an anaesthetic plus IV fluids are given, allowing the vet to do a full assessment and probing to evaluate teeth and

gums. After checking for gingivitis, the vet can then remove tartar with a special ultrasonic scaler without causing any stress to your pet. If dental disease has developed, the tooth and roots can be checked with our state of the art digital Xray system.

Feeding your pet a good quality diet can make a big difference. We stock several pet foods for dogs and cats which are formulated to support your pet’s dental health and work to reduce plaque, stains and tartar build up. Reducing plaque reduces bad breath too. Rabbits have teeth which continue to growthey need good quality hay, fresh grass and a high fibre diet to keep their teeth in great shape.

Ask the team about which Dental pet food is best for your pet!

Try rewarding your dog or cat with dental treats which help to clean teeth as your pet enjoys chewing. Delicate Care dental treats for dogs or Greenies

Feline for cats will be a delicious snack. We have a well stocked reception area where you can buy quality pet foods for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as other pet supplies. Most important, you’ll find friendly personal advice for all aspects of your pet’s welfare.

It was fantastic to attend the Young Leaders of the Central West Summit recently!

Now in its second year, the event gives student leadership teams from across the region the opportunity to connect and collaborate on issues that matter to them. It’s a great way for these future leaders to share ideas, explore solutions, and be inspired to be the best leaders they can be!

This year’s summit was hosted by Kinross Wolaroi School’s Prefect Team, taking the reins from James Sheahan students who founded the event last year. A big congratulations to Fin Shephard, Elle McGufficke and Annie Dedman for putting together a cracking event this year!

It was great to officially open the summit, and meet many students who are shooting for the stars! Our future is in very safe hands!

It was also wonderful to catch up with Charlotte, my TEN4TEN mentee this year!

Run by Regional Development Australia, the TEN4TEN program links the next generation of young leaders with mentors from across the region.

Next week the TEN4TEN group will be visiting Australian Parliament House in Canberra. I’m looking forward to giving the group a behindthe-scenes look at Capital Hill!

As the torch made its way from the Botanic Gardens to Robertson Park, we reflected on the promise that was made 100 years ago in the trenches of the Western Front. The promise made by a soldier to his dying friend to look after his family. The promise which sparked Legacy, an organisation which, to this day, provides care and support to veterans’ families.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay was launched in Pozières, France on April 23. In the three months since, the torch has travelled to Menin Gate, Belgium, London, Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory,

Queensland and northern NSW.

It was an honour to see the Legacy Torch, held strongly in the hands of local war widows, veterans and legatees, travel through our region on a 50,000km journey, through 100 stops, to Legacy Clubs across Australia.

75 years ago the Legacy Club of Orange was established, with the club currently looking after 224 widows and 2 children.

As Minister for Veterans Affairs I was delighted to announce funding for the relay. The relay flame is a reminder that the work of Legacy in caring for our veterans and their families never ceases. We are very grateful for Legacy’s vital work.

For more information on the relay or to find out how you can support Legacy, visit www.legacytorchrelay.com.au.

Iwelcome the visit to our region recently by NSW Minister Kate Washington to discuss a state/ federal funding package for disaster-hit communities. It is important for her to see what our residents are going through.

Any injection of funding into our devastated region is a positive development.

However, the $9.1 million will go towards multiple disaster-hit areas, so it will be spread pretty thin. More funding is needed for our area, and we will be pushing for it.

While I wasn’t invited to be part of this state and federal funding announcement, one question I would have asked the state government is when will the same assistance measures, that have been announced for the Northern Rivers area of NSW, be announced for our region?

For example, why does the Lismore area have access to the home buy-back scheme and not the storm and flood-hit areas of the Central West? Why is it that

other Local Government Areas have access to the Community Assets Program to help rebuild their towns and villages but councils in our region do not?

There is a fundamental injustice and inequality going on here with respect to storm and flood assistance provided by the state and federal governments. The NSW Government can activate this assistance immediately. The question has to be asked, why they haven’t done so? The previous NSW Government failed to act and so too has the new one. Our residents pay their taxes just like everyone else in the state, and they are right to expect that they will receive equal treatment and an equal level of support.

The cold hard truth is our region is being ripped off and is being given second class treatment.

I call on the NSW Government to activate the same level of disaster assistance for our region that other communities in NSW have received. On the double. Without delay.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

Women who retired in 2016 had an average super balance of $157,000 while men had $271,000. As you can see, women retired with an average of close to $120,000 less in their super than men. That’s massive!

Critically though, both genders typically fall short of the target of $545,000 for a “comfortable” retirement and both usually have to rely heavily on the age pension for income in retirement. Unfortunately, this means their lifestyles are significantly reduced compared to when they were working.

Become a Super Woman!

the better the results will be. And as you can see, it’s all the more important that women take charge of their super.

The inequality in super between men and women is unfair, but it can also diminish a woman’s financial independence in retirement. The implications are huge for single or separated women, however, there are also enormous implications for a couple. Not to mention that women tend to live longer than men and therefore actually need more money to finance their retirement years.

The causes of the gap are reasonably clear as women tend to have broken employment due to having children (with some women spending a significant amount of time in the unpaid role of a stay-at-home mum) and there continues to be a persistent gender pay gap.

Running out of money in retirement is usually at the top of people’s financial fears. Even if you’re nearing retirement age, it’s not too late to optimise your super, however the sooner you can start focusing on your super

Perhaps the biggest mistake people make is treating their super as something they only need to think about when they retire. By then it’s too late. How your superannuation is invested during your working years is one of the most important financial decisions you will ever make. But with so much jargon and so many rules and regulations, it’s easy to put super in the ‘too-hard basket’. I certainly understand that retirement might not be your top priority right now as with three young kids of my own and a wife who has been a stay-at-home mum for almost 14 years, I know life gets busy! However, when it comes to saving for retirement, combining smart strategies with time will pave the way to bridging the super gap. The gap won’t close without action!

So, don’t get angry about women being worse o , get even by learning more about super and the steps you can take to bridge the gap as much possible. Get smart about this now and your future self will be patting your current self on the back as you relax enjoying a cocktail on a beautiful holiday each year in retirement.

Super is a mystery to most people. It doesn’t get taught at school, most workplaces don’t help their employees understand it and so most of us are going through life unsure of what to do.

Let’s make your super matter and let’s make sure it works hard so that you reap the full benefits!

Cheers, Daniel

August Jewellers:

quality, hand-made jewellery to last a lifetime

August Jewellers’ Con Steenkamp can bring your vision to life, creating stunning pieces of one-of-a-kind jewellery that will last a lifetime.

“I find the idea a little exciting; to make something out of nothing,” says Con, as to what it was that drew him to the jewellery trade.

“To start with a bit of gold, melt it down and form something out of it, create something out of nothing… Being able to speak to a customer, draw something, put down stones on clay and then just make that dream, that’s basically it.”

A master jeweller with more than 35 years of experience, Con can design and create custom jewellery, repurpose or repair cherished pieces, basically anything — and

all from his workshop in the heart of the Orange CBD.

“Everything except engraving, because that’s completely another line of work,” adds Con. “But I can make basically anything, so rings, brooches, pendants… I’ve made little figurines, animal figurines… any jewellery you see in a shop, I can make.

Con has been working as a jeweller in Orange for the past eight years, but it was only last month that he and his wife Carin took the leap and opened their own storefront.

August Jewellers is located in the Centrepoint Arcade, where you can watch Con at work creating each masterpiece through the store’s front window.

“People come in with an idea or they’ve got old jewellery at home that they don’t wear anymore and they bring that in and I design something out of that,” says Con, who takes great pride in the pieces he

makes for people.

“I like giving quality to people, so I spend time on my work,” he says. “Nowadays you don’t get manufacturing jewellers anymore and most of what you see in shops is all cast.

“But a hand-made ring will last much longer than a cast ring. A casting, the claws can break off and things like that, but handmade rings don’t, they last a lifetime.”

And for those people who don’t like the idea of sending their jewellery to Sydney or Melbourne for repair, at August Jewellers it never leaves the premises.

“If you want me to make something or repair something, it doesn’t go out of the shop. It doesn’t go to other cities. Everything is made here,” says Con.

August Jewellers is a diamond and gem dealer providing custom-made jewellery remodelling and repairs right here in Orange.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY CRAIG!

CROSS purposes

A sure bet WITH OLIVER THOMPSON

With the recent parliamentary inquiry about the harm caused by online gambling, it’s impossible to tune into the news or read the paper without encountering commentary on the topic. Particularly as Australia’s gambling losses are the highest globally, estimated at $25B annually, with far-reaching financial, emotional, and family-related consequences. Thankfully most Australians realise the danger of gambling, however, we’ve also turned against taking perceived risks like religion. We question religion’s reliability, instead seeking assurances in tangible but temporary things. Luckily, betting on Jesus is 100% reliable, 0% risk. In John’s Gospel, Jesus says: “The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgement to the Son…“, and “...anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgement.” So, if Jesus is our judge and has spared from judgement those who believe his words, instead taking on himself their punishment, then Jesus’ promises prove reliable. By dying on the cross Jesus shows his love by protecting us from his judgement so there’s no reasonable doubt about his promises being fulfilled. Throwing in your lot with Jesus is a sure winner: Eternal life with him, free from death and sin.

NGO FLOOD RECOVERY PROGRAM

Many months after the floodwaters have receded the ongoing need for support in our flood-ravaged communities is being often being delivered through NGOs and volunteerrun community organisations. Last week Minister Kate Washington MP visited Molong and meet with locals to hear their experiences. The Minister announced a $9.1 million joint Commonwealth and State Government funded grant funding package for Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) to help fund their continued support to flood-impacted communities to rebuild following the floods which began in August-September 2022. The grants will provide a range of support, including staffing costs, to meet increased demand for help, operational costs, and funding to help people remain safe during recovery. INNER WHEEL CLUB OF ORANGE

I was honoured to be invited to the Inner Wheel Club of Orange Minhi Changeover at Orange Ex Services Club and help celebrate their 10th birthday. Inner Wheel is a worldwide movement for women that meet and fundraise for important projects that help disadvantaged people and communities right across the world. Orange Inner Wheel Minhi are always looking for new women to join their group, it truly is an extraordinary group doing amazing things. They meet once a month at the Robinhood Hotel. I would also like to welcome the incoming President Melissah Quinn to the role and thank outgoing President Jayne Williams and her committee for their work over the last year.

Did you know…

In the Orange LGA alone there are currently between 250300 manufacturing businesses employing thousands of locals. I was privileged to attend a special meeting of local Orange based manufacturers to hear from Lisa Emerson, Modern Manufacturing Commissioner for NSW and Michael Sharpe, Chairman for the AUKUS Forum. We discussed the role of manufacturing in this state and potential future opportunities. I was briefed by the industry about some of their challenges and opportunities to network, grow and collaborate. There are some exciting prospects in the pipeline. I am confident after hearing from both these guest speakers about the opportunity for growth in manufacturing. Made in Australia has a world class reputation although don’t you think Made in NSW sounds even better!

RECORD BREAKERS

Miss Nine approaches the car door at pick-up time, clutching multiple drink bottles to her chest and absolutely beaming with pride.

“Guess what?” she says as she climbs in. “I left three drink bottles behind at school last week. My teacher says it’s a new record! I can’t WAIT to see what other records I can break.” She leans back thoughtfully and asks how many sticks I have in my handbag…

“Maybe you could bring home both spare jumpers that are probably hanging on the back of your chair before that becomes an expensive record,” I suggest, but she lets me know both were “lost” at some point last term.

Not for the first time, I consider sewing an AirTag into her one remaining jumper.

Once home, I ask her to empty her bag onto the table. If there are any Guinness world record people reading this, she had 23 sticks, 18 rocks, four empty tiny teddy packets and, concerningly, two notes from school. One of these notes was about dance costumes and, alarmingly, I now have less than 15 hours to find her black tights! We jump back in the car and make a desperate dash into the terrifying “Arena of Danger” that is the Orange City Centre at 3.30pm on a Tuesday.

“I’m NOT buying doughnuts,” I announce preemptively.

Some 48 exhausting minutes later we reemerge; battered, but not beaten, with tights (and doughnuts) in hand. We make a quick stop at Woolworths because I’ve given up all intentions of cooking, but we need bread for toasties. Unfortunately, this is where it all goes downhill: when Little Miss Matildas Fan spots the “Matildas coin” promotion.

Let me walk you through this particular form of torture, I mean wonderfully patriotic fun activity, step by step.

Step 1) Your child spots the “ask for a Matildas coin in your change when you pay with cash” sign as you pay $38 by card for cheese, bread and apples.

Step 2) Withdraw $20 cash, while carefully avoiding a glance at your remaining bank balance.

Step 3) Buy a single chocolate Freddo with the cash, ensuring you receive a $1 coin in change.

Step 4) Request a special “Matildas coin” to be included in your change.

Step 5) Be informed that the checkout person is “out of coins”.

Step 6) Beg them to get a supervisor to run to another register and swap coins over because your daughter is an absolutely wild Matildas fan and this will mean the absolute world to her.

Step 7) Give the coin to Miss Nine who loses it somewhere on the drive home.

“I DON’T KNOW WHERE IT WENT! IT MIGHT HAVE GONE OUT THE WINDOW OKAY???”

Step 8) Eat Freddo.

Home, with dance tights but not much sanity left, I vent on social media about my day. This is met by a beautiful offer from a friend to give Miss Nine the coin she received. I thank her, but wonder if this means Miss Nine won’t learn a lesson from this. She helpfully points out that she’s unlikely to learn anything either way.

I hand Miss Nine a one-dollar coin to swap for the special one tomorrow and she loses it before she leaves the living room. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. “Don’t worry Mum,” Miss Nine says, patting my arm kindly. “I know where Dad keeps his swear jar. Plus, I bet I broke the record of how quickly you can lose a dollar twice in one afternoon!”

HOME COOKING with RUBEN LOPEZ MESA

A most misunderstood getable

One of the biggest things I’ve heard is: ‘I hate brussels sprouts!’ and ‘When I was a kid I disliked the smell of them being boiled.’ Does that statement ring a bell to you? Did you have the same problem with this delicious vegetable? Let me tell you something… you actually like Brussels sprouts, but don’t know it yet.

I’m going to give you the reason because you’ve been thinking all this time you don’t like them. The method of cooking that was applied to them when you were a kid was incorrect. Yep! As easy as that.

Let’s all agree that boiling brussels sprouts is a ‘no-no’. The chemical reaction (same with other vegetables like cauliflower) will put you off straight away. Besides that it will lose a lot of nutritional value and heaps of crunch and flavour. So once we agree to NEVER boil veggies like this, let’s talk about other options to introduce this super healthy green vegetable in our diets.

Please remember brussels sprouts are high in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a really important nutritious addition to your daily meals. They may also come with added health benefits, including decreased inflammation and improved immune system health.

A reader the other day asked me: ‘How can I introduce brussels sprouts in my kids’ diets?’ The answer is simpler than you imagine: serve them raw.

‘Raw?’ you may be thinking. Yes, use it as if it was a mini cabbage, making delicious salads with it. The tip is to remove the bottom, put one-byone the leaves and cut them really fine (julienne) along with red cabbage, carrots, etc, making a delicious coleslaw.

Serving suggestions: use brussel sprouts coleslaw as a filling for a healthy salmon wrap (like the one in the picture). You’ll be adding five to six vegetable servings to your kids’ lunch or dinner.

If you would like to be a bit more adventurous, you can pickle them, ferment them (making kimchi), roast them, fry them, etc. In fact, if you can burn them, or caramelise them as chefs say, you’ll have an amazing side dish or entreé to surprise your family and friends.

Burnt brussels sprouts with bacon was one of my favourite customer’s dishes in a restaurant in Sydney. They get nutty, salty and… yummm!

Do yourself a favour and give them a try – you will discover one of the most economical and delicious veggies ever. @atableof10

Held by one family for the past 15 years, the complex is currently grossing $44,460 per annum, with long-term tenants in place. This complex is only now being o ered for sale purely to refocus investment funds and the owner’s portfolio.

Unit 1 has been updated with a new kitchen, new floor coverings and a split-system airconditioner. Units 2 and 3 are in good order and, with reasonable renovations, income will only increase dramatically.

Inspection is strictly by appointment only.

LIFEandTIMES with

ANGUS GIBB

It may seem like an obvious statement, but each day is filled with moments. Moments that make you stop. Moments that take your breath away. Moments that fill you with joy. Moments that change your life completely… we could even say that our lives are defined or shaped by a single moment. A moment where our world was completely revolutionised or a moment where, all of a sudden, we saw something for the first time and nothing has been the same since. Have you ever stopped to consider the moments that have shaped your life? For me I can think of a handful. The moment I knew that I wanted to marry my wife. The birth of each of my children. The moment when I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Each of these moments have made me who I am. It is a strange, perhaps emotional, or maybe even an uncomfortable experience, to stop and consider the moments that have made you who you are today. But as you do, there is a great opportunity for reflection. What is it about these moments that changed you? What was it about that situation that made that moment so significant? How do I keep on moving forward in light of that particular moment? There is perhaps one moment that is coming for all of us, and it may come when we least expect it. And that is the moment when our own lives will come to an end.

Over the years, as I have had the great privilege of sitting with people who are entering the final stages of life, or helped families say their goodbyes at funerals, amid the grief there is always a sense of either the moment came too soon, or at just the right time. It is a strange part of our lives, and one that we do not often enjoy reflecting on. But it is the moment that we will each face when our time in this life comes to an end. When it comes, we may be given the opportunity to reflect back on our lives, we may not. As I reflect on this as a Christian, I am reminded of a moment that the Bible speaks about. In fact, these are some of the most comforting words that I hold dear. They are what the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52: ‘Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.’ For you, that may sound strange, or you may think it’s just a bit ridiculous. For me however, as I think about what moments shape who I am, it is this hope of life that keeps me going. That – at this moment when life comes to an end – for the one who knows and trusts in Jesus, it is actually the greatest moment of all. Not because life has ended, but because in that moment, life truly begins.

If we could visit heaven on this saddest day Maybe for a moment Our pain would go away

We’d put our arms around her and whisper words so true that living life without her is so hard to do

We cannot bring these last years back, when we would sit and talk together

But loving thoughts and memories will stay with us forever. We think of her every day...

Loved and sadly missed Mum and Family

If roses grow in heaven, Lord pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Mother’s arms, and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her I love and miss her, and when she turns to smile.

Place a kiss upon her cheek, and hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day. But there’s an ache within my heart, that will never go away.

Forever

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for deciding to close the Aquatic Centre at 4pm on weekends. This is discrimination against yearly pass holders who have seen lane availability decrease (again), while pass prices increase.

THUMBS UP to Dementia Australia for the four-day workshop they held in Orange recently. The presenters were fantastic and provided great resources for those diagnosed with dementia or information for carers. Well done to the Orange City Bowling Club who hosted the event.

THUMBS UP to the young lady at Orange City Library who assisted me to scan my documents and upload them. She’s really helpful and a great asset to the library.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for not cleaning out gutters around Orange. Just look at Albert Street.

A MASSIVE THUMBS DOWN to supermarkets that have only ONE employee on a checkout for the whole store.

THUMBS UP to Dance HQ for the wonderful way they treated their students during the recent dance eisteddfods in Dubbo and Wellington. The students came away winners in every way.

BIG THUMBS UP to Jessie, the only checkout person working on Friday afternoon. She was polite and e cient despite the long line of customers. You’re a real asset!

BIG THUMBS UP to Orange Petbarn. Sta are always friendly and helpful. It’s a pleasure to shop there.

THUMBS UP and thank you to Greg, the delivery and installation guru from Betta Electrical.

THUMBS UP to the taxi driver who took us home from Orange Railway Station. He thoughtfully stayed in our driveway, with car headlights on, until we were safely up the steps and inside the house.

THUMBS DOWN to the security guard at one of the local shopping centres who pulled me up for driving too fast on my mobility scooter. Having admitted I was in the wrong and wanting to move on with my day, he then proceeded to be rude and insinuate I had no need for the scooter and questioned my being handicapped.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to financial institutions who charged $5 to count the coins from a child’s money box with no prior notification that a cost would be incurred. Then the total of the amount counted was not available till the next day.

THUMBS UP to the lovely man who put the polystyrene on my balcony, thank you so very much.

THUMBS UP to Orange Family Dental. I rang them Monday morning after a weekend of pain and they rang me back within 30 minutes and arranged an appointment. Within four hours the problem was solved with care and attention, then followed by two phone calls to check everything was okay. Thank you again.

THUMBS UP to Jase and Leanne at Great Western Auto Wreckers on Forest Road. You guys could not have been more helpful and literally got me out of a pickle when I’d lost my “wheels”. This paramedic is so appreciative, thank you once again!

THUMBS UP to the team at Imagine Daycare, Orange. Our boys love going there everyday and we are so appreciative of the hard work and the “extra mile” the sta go to make it an amazing education experience for our children.

HUGE THUMBS UP to Bailey that works the self check outs at Coles on a Sunday you young man are an absolute asset to the company. Always smiling and extremely helpful. Thank you!

THUMBS UP to Tim at Terry White for his personable and expert care and advice.
