Thank you to our Sponsors:

It’s nice to have the sun streaming in through my office window as I write this on Tuesday afternoon — most welcome after some of the weather on the weekend!

I had a visit from two American friends of mine, along with their children, who I hadn’t seen in person for 18 years! I’d met them both at university in Sydney, where they’d come for a semester abroad. Some friends and I went over to their wedding a couple years after and it was nice to reconnect and recall some fun times from our youth. It was also a great opportunity to get out and see a few things around the district that I hadn’t got to before like The Falls waterfalls out past Clifton Grove, which were looking spectacular on Saturday morning. But the “view” from the top of Mount Canobolas was much less enjoyable given the icy rain, mist and intense wind gusts when we hit the summit! It was wild! Quite different to the cold, but mild weather a little lower in elevation!

We apologise to our readers for any confusion about last week’s television guide, or should we say last month’s television guide. The TV guide is put together and supplied to us from outside this office and we ended up getting sent the wrong one. It slipped past us as we went to print, but we have reprimanded the appropriate person and they are very sorry. We’ve double-checked this issue and will endeavour to ensure it won’t happen again!

Nerida Cuddy bound for UK tour: How COVID connected this Canowindra folk singer with audiences in Cornwell and beyond

hen the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 saw lockdown orders put in place all around the world it was a crushing blow for the live entertainment industry. Overnight, musicians and other performers were left without the means of earning a living.

But, for Canowindra singer/songwriter Nerida Cuddy, the lockdowns had an unexpected and positive effect on her career, connecting her with new audiences and has led to her embarking on a tour to the UK.

“Covid was actually, for me, a time of opening a lot of doors,” Nerida said, although adds that it was all very unexpected.

During lockdowns in 2020, Nerida

Wbegan making videos of her music for her Facebook page but then stumbled on an online group where other folk musicians were sharing their music.

“I uploaded something to that not realising that it was UK-based and people really responded positively!” Nerida said.

“They were all locked down for a lot longer than we were in Australia and I filmed most of the songs out in beautiful locations, like canola fields, or lookouts, or by the sides of rivers.

“I think they really loved how the songs are so deeply immersed in the Australian landscape and how it’s different to their own and it invited them into my world in a really sort of evocative way, I guess.”

Nerida soon found herself being invited to contribute to virtual concerts on YouTube and to join folk clubs in the UK in places like Cornwall and Bristol, and in other

countries. For the past two-and-a-half years, she has been a part of this online community, performing almost weekly for new fans all over the world.

But in two weeks’ time, she will be switching off her laptop and leaving our shores to perform live at festivals and clubs around the UK.

“I’m starting up in Scotland where I’ve done YouTube concerts for this folk club during their lockdown and then I’ll be mostly based in Bristol, but getting to Cornwell and to a couple of other clubs and festivals during that time,” she said.

“I’m excited to meet these friends in person… some of them have walked with me through hard things like when my Mum was dying, they were actually really good friends on the other side of the world. So what I’m really looking forward to is just sitting in their lounge rooms and hanging

out in person.”

Nerida’s also hoping this UK tour won’t be her last.

“I’m also going to a folk festival where a lot of festival organisers go and my friends are going to introduce me to them so that hopefully I can line up a more expansive tour next time,” she said.

“My whole career has been as an isolated musician, living in a small country town and bringing up three kids, so it’s been really fun and amazing that, from my little studio in Canowindra, I’ve been able to perform on the other side of the world. That’s pretty fun, hey!”

Before Nerida departs for the British Isles you can see her perform this weekend at Millthorpe’s Acoustic Sunday on July 16 at Club Millthorpe. Book your tickets at www.stickytickets.com.au/48FYG but get in quick!

Full steam ahead for Lachlan Valley Railway!

It was a big weekend for heritage train enthusiasts with Lachlan Valley Railway’s veteran steam locomotive 3237 running three days of shuttle rides from the Orange Railway Station.

The 130-year-old locomotive had relocated to its new permanent home at the Orange East Fork depot back in May, but this weekend was the first time the locomotive had carried paying passengers since undergoing an extensive six-year-long renovation.

Unfortunately, the old engine did develop a small mechanical issue on Saturday morning, which meant the ALCO diesel electric 4464 was brought into service to keep shuttles moving on schedule.

But it did little to dampen the enthusiasm of train lovers.

“I think all trains were almost at capacity,” Lachlan Valley Railway (LVR) Chairman Ross Jackson said.

“Unfortunately, we did have a bit of a problem on Saturday morning… when they’re 130 years old there’s not much you can do and most of the time when you

have to fix something it’s not something that’s fixed quickly — It’s a credit to the maintenance guys for getting it done in such time!”

The 3237 locomotive made an additional Sunday afternoon run to give those who really wanted to ride with the steam engine another opportunity.

“I want to thank the Orange people for their support for the runs,” Ross said. “It didn’t run all to plan but everyone was really accepting of that and I also want to thank the volunteers that made the day happen.”

But this is certainly not going to be the last opportunity locals will get to experience the historic steam locomotive in action, Ross said.

“We’re hoping for once a month through the winter… pretty much March through to November that’s your steam season,” he said.

“We want to do more lunch and dinner trains, so take punters to a destination… and we will look to head up towards Dubbo and out further west from there.”

YEAR 11 2024 APPLICATIONS FOR NEW STUDENTS

CLOSE Thursday 27 July 2023

Application packs for new students are available from the Administration office, or from the information evening. We are taking applications for all other years.

Lachlan Valley Railway’s move to Orange has been more than a decade-long process. It began when the branch line to their Cowra depot was closed in 2009, cutting them o from the rail network.

Volunteers have since put in countless hours to restore the Orange East Fork depot, but there is still a lot to be done. In particular, Ross said they really need money to build a new shed over the roundhouse and another to store their rolling stock

“The depot needs a lot of work. The guys are working on that locomotive without sheds and that, as you can imagine in the Orange climate, can be problematic at times,” Ross said

The LVR is continuously looking for funding sources but is excited to be up and running in Orange.

“The LVR’s basically made Orange its home and we want to work with the businesses of Orange,” Ross said.

“If there’s anything that our trains can supplement like festivals and other events that happen in and outside of Orange, we certainly want to be involved.”

Orange’s case to become the federal capital of Australia

On January 1, 1901, the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania joined together to form the new Commonwealth of Australia.

igh on the agenda for the new federal parliament was choosing an appropriate site for a federal district to build an appropriate capital city for the young nation. There had been much debate already between the colonies –now states – as to where the capital should be located and conditions had been set in the Constitution: The capital site had to be in NSW, but at least 100 miles (160 kilometres) from Sydney. Scores of sites were proposed for the new territory and the merits of each were debated by politicians and in the press. Dalgety, on the banks of the Snowy River was an early front-runner and the nearby town of Bombala was also considered, as was Albury.

But the NSW representatives weren’t in favour of the capital being located that far south and they pushed strongly for regions closer to Sydney.

One of their leading candidates was Orange.

A local campaign to build a federal capital at Orange had begun in February 1899, with the support of a number of prominent citizens including the wealthy merchant and pastoralist James Dalton. Over the next few years, Orange Federal Capital League worked hard to make the case for “Canobolas,” but in October 1908 it was confirmed that the Yass – Canberra site was to be our nation’s capital.

Looking through the National Library of Australia’s online archive, Trove, Orange City Life came across a booklet produced by the Orange Federal Capital League making a case for Canobolas being “the ideal site for the Federal Capital of Australia.”

The booklet begins by pointing out the suitability of our city’s geographical location and the existing railway connection to Sydney, Melbourne, and the other state capitals.

As for the ability to feed a new city, “the district is

favoured by exceptional conditions… and its ability to support a large population from its own resources is unquestionable.”

The booklet even includes a list showing the volumes of produce exported from the district to add weight to their case.

And the climate, soils and rainfall of the district surpass all the proposed sites, the League states emphatically.

“Orange has already a perfect and over-abundant supply of water… su cient for double the present population of Orange.” The population then was about 5,000.

“The healthiness of the district is proverbial, “ the booklet continues, “and medical gentlemen highly recommend it as a health resort.

“The locally-born persons are famous for longevity. Orange is frequently quoted as one of the healthiest places in Australia all the year round.

“It enjoys complete immunity from fogs, and air is always

bracing a light.”

The League points out that when it comes to constructing the new capital, building materials such as basalt, trachyte, marble, granite, limestone, brick clays and flag stones “exist in the district in practically inexhaustible quantities, and in the most convenient positions.”

Under the heading “Special Advantages” the League is e usive in its praises of “the beautiful undulating country, diversified and picturesque in character.” Their proposed building site “has an easterly and northerly aspect, its contour and surroundings are all that can be desired.”

The booklet includes a number of photographs highlighting the beauty of the district.

“No other proposed site can compare with CANOBOLAS in regard to these special advantages,” it concludes, “and it is confidently believed by the Orange Federal Capital League that the claims and qualifications of the district to be selected as the Site for the Federal Capital are superior to those of any other available site.”

Why Relying on Motivation Always Lets You Down

e live in a world where health gurus, fitness experts, influencers and life coaches expect us to use fear as motivational fuel.

“If you don’t get out and crush those goals, you’re going to waste your life,” they warn.

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day!”  This kind of talk works for very few people for several reasons. Firstly, when we’re not in any immediate danger, we are not primarily motivated by fear – we’re driven by habit. Secondly, we don’t all have the same time available to us. My friend, who works full-time, is a single mother and cares for a disabled son has far less free time than I do, regardless of there being 24 hours in a day.

Most importantly, motivation can fade – it’s unreliable. I agree with behaviourists who say that motivation follows action. When you get yourself to take action, even when you aren’t initially motivated to do so, you will find that your motivation automatically increases over time.

On that basis, when we have a goal we want to meet, we need to completely

Wforget about motivating ourselves: it’s simply not a useful way to achieve goals. Instead, we need to implement what I’ve coined as ACCT: Acceptance, Cut-it-down, Consistency, and Thoughts (who doesn’t love a handy acronym?). I’ll explain each point briefly below.

Acceptance

Acceptance is about working from exactly where we are. If a person wants to get fit but hasn’t done a push-up or walked a flight of stairs in a year, starting with the Arnold Schwarzenegger workout isn’t going to be sustainable.

Acceptance also means accepting your limitations (including time) and working within them. It’s also about focusing less on what you can’t do, and shifting your focus on what you can do.

Cut It Down

Instead of setting yourself a mammoth feat, you can look at your goal, break it down into smaller chunks, then work on turning those small chunks into habits. Focusing on building habits is important because when life gets tough – and it always does – we don’t rise to our goals, we fall to our habits.

If we go back to the gym example, focusing on incrementally building new habits might look like this: “I go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after work. I’m only obliged to stay for 10 minutes.” Or it could look like this: “I am doing 10 squats every night before I have a shower.”

Once the behaviour becomes habitual, then you can focus on building up the time and even add new habits. One thing to remember when you’re incrementally building new habits is to only focus on the step in front of you.

Consistency

Building a new tiny habit, which should be our objective when we’re trying to change something in our lives, requires consistency. However, when I speak about consistency, I’m not talking about an all-or-nothing approach.

“Never miss twice” is a concept that James Clear wrote about in his book, ‘Atomic Habits’, and one that I say to my clients (and myself!) a lot. It simply means to avoid the second mistake rather than giving up because of the first.

Thoughts

That nagging, worrying, self-deprecating voice in your head just wants to keep you safe, but neuroscience research shows that it can create shame. Shame actually shuts down the decision-making centre of our brains, leading us to make poorer choices.

We can get out of the shame spiral by listening to our thoughts and practising selfcompassion. This means rather than fearing or fighting the critical inner voice, we listen to it, then gently shift the narrative.

As an example, your inner dialogue could say, “This is pointless, I’m spending so little time on this, I’m never going to reach my goal.” To which you might respond: “I’m just focusing on building this habit for now. Life always changes, new possibilities open up. I’ll focus on the next step later.”

Summing it up

Motivation can’t be the main focus when trying to create lasting change, because it is unreliable. Instead, focus on incremental habit change. Be realistic about your starting point, implement your plans with consistency and self-compassion, and be proud of yourself for moving towards your goal.

WHAT’S HAPPENING @ CADIA

Cadia Community Update

The health and safety of people is not a negotiable for Cadia, and we are committed to conducting our mining activities in a responsible and sustainable manner, ensuring the protection of the environment and the wellbeing of local communities.

We are proud to have been part of the Cadia District for the past 25 years and appreciate that the success of our operations is intrinsically linked to the prosperity of the communities in which we operate.

A 12-month particulate characterisation study, undertaken by the Australian Government’s Australian Nuclear Science Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and commissioned in collaboration with the local community, found that mining operations at Cadia have made a relatively small contribution to regional air quality. The findings in the ANSTO report are consistent with Cadia’s record of operating in accordance with its Project Approval air quality impact assessment criteria. The study also highlighted metals of concern recently identified by the community, such as lead, nickel, selenium and chromium, were not significant drivers of the soil fingerprint. In addition, the study

found those metals occurred at very low levels in the PM2.5 fraction and were not in exceedance of any national standard.

A copy of the ANSTO report is available on the Cadia website.

EPA Update

Following a direction from the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in mid-June, Cadia continues to work on reducing emissions from the mine’s ventilation rise. In addition to the actions already underway, Cadia took action to reduce known sources of dust in the underground operation as an initial step towards meeting the EPA’s requirements. To ensure these measures were safe and e ective, our site team, tasked with underground dust mitigation, immediately developed and implemented a revised operating plan for the underground mine. This will allow Cadia to reduce dust emissions

GrannyFlatArrangements

while working towards the planned commissioning of additional interim dust filtration units on an accelerated timeframe. Various measures above and beyond those already in progress include:

• the installation of additional dust sprays and spray curtains,

• re-configuration of dust extraction systems,

• further monitoring of vent rise emissions,

• installation of additional dust sampling instrumentation in the underground mine,

• monitoring of surface and underground dust sampling instruments,

• identification of further acceleration of the additional dust filtration units currently on order and

• proposals for alternative sampling locations, including robust sampling methodology and instrumentation specifications.

The latest air quality monitoring report submitted to the EPA on Wednesday 5 July shows that Cadia is operating in compliance with the regulatory requirements.

Next Steps

The completion of the ANSTO study is just one part of our response to addressing concerns raised by both the local community and the NSW Environment Protection Authority. In the coming weeks, Cadia will receive results from a further two independent studies to provide us and the community with a clearer picture of the situation and how to proceed in the best interests of the community’s health and wellbeing.

SAGE Environmental is conducting a human health risk assessment, which will incorporate the results of more than 145 water test results sampled from the community over March and April, while a lead isotope study carried out by the University of South Australia will assist with identifying the source of any lead contamination.

As always, Cadia will continue to keep the community updated. Any community member with questions or concerns can contact Cadia directly via the Community Hotline on 1800 063 043.

Mem ies wi Ned

Ned’s Memorable Goosebump Moments

May I share with you some of the most memorable of what I call my “Goosebump” moments.

Driving through a savage thunderstorm in the mountains back of Kosciusko one night with my Wagner tape playing, constant claps of thunder echoed from the mountain sides, shaking the earth, with lightning reflected in the low boiling clouds. Through the rain-spotted windscreen I could see streaming down through the storm the Valkyries on their big white war horses, golden hair flowing from under their burnished helmets, screaming

and shrieking as they galloped past to gather up the souls of fallen warriors and carry them up to Valhalla.

Later that night, pulling o into a layby for a spell and a drink from my thermos of co ee, I smelled the wet earth and eucalypts. But the unbelievable stillness and calm of the night really struck me… the only sounds being the faint soft music from the radio and the distant rumble of thunder from the passing storm.

Another time was on Tambo Plain at sunrise and way-away to the east at the edge of the world, bars of gold, silver and pink… the sun just peeping over the horizon, lighting the tops of towering thunderheads of a stormfront coming in from the west. To make the morning perfect

Grieg’s “Morning” was playing on the radio. Which sort of put me in mind of my favourite poem by Arthur Hugh Clough:

“Not by eastern windows only, When daylight comes, comes in the light, In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly, But westward, look, the land is bright.”

Often simple moments are very memorable, such as paddling along in the wee small hours west of Walgett and picking up loud and clear a Queensland radio station playing one after another all my favourite country and western tunes.

Or the weird roaring and whistling sound of a Morning Glory cloud formation rolling through the trees at Escott in the Gulf.

From goosebumps to speedbumps, I have recently taken possession of a new

walker. It has all-wheel drive, and a V95 turbo-charged motor (me). My lovely wife is giving me some essential accessories: a four-note klaxon horn and a stubby holder. Boy, oh boy, is it fast – from seated to shu e in one-and-a-half minutes flat!

Did I ever tell you of the old duchess who, having lived a dull and regulated life, decided to do something rash? She took o all her clothes and did a streak through an old retired o cers’ club. One old colonel remarked to his companion: “Good heavens, wasn’t that the duchess? To which his companion replied: “By Jove, I think it was. Did you notice what she was wearing?” To which the colonel said: “I’m not sure, but it needed ironing!”

WHAT IS THE VOICE?

In late 2023, Australians will have their say in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The Voice would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous Australians.

The Voice would be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament, it’s advice would be non-binding and it would not have a veto power.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring that they are consulted on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs. It’s about long overdue constitutional recognition, and Closing the Gap.

The finest legal minds in the country have declared the Voice to be constitutionally sound. Eminent constitutional barrister Bret Walker SC has stated that the suggestion that the Voice will gum up the workings of governemnt is ‘too silly for words’.

To find out more about the Voice, come to one of the upcoming information sessions.

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE?

It was interesting to hear that federal Nationals’ leader David Littleproud has been in Eugowra and Molong this month.

The storms and floods hit the Cabonne Shire and Wellington on the 13th and 14th of November 2022. It’s now almost 8 months later.

For the party that says it represents the people of regional Australia, that’s an extraordinarily long time.

While I welcome him to our electorate, the question has to be asked why it has taken almost eight months for him to visit our disaster-hit communities to express his concern.

No wonder people are cynical about the major parties. They turn up, announce that they’re here to win the seat back and then go for photo opportunities eight months after the disaster hit. That’s called only showing up when they want your vote.

I suspect that for a lot of residents still picking up the pieces from this traumatic time, his visit will be a case of way too little, way too late.

LOCAL ART EXHIBITION

This week there were some amazing wooden artworks and sculptures on display at the Orange City Bowling Club!

The fantastic art exhibition was the work of Professor John Gilroy, Australia’s leading Aboriginal disability scholar, who decided to present his latest research findings through art.

He teamed up with the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council and Orange Aboriginal Medical Service to see the stunning works exhibited in town. The exhibition, titled ‘People’s Experience of the

NDIS’ aimed to get people talking about what it can be like to engage with disability support services. Well done to all involved!

FAREWELL HENRY HOSWELL

I was deeply saddened to learn that Eugowra legend Henry Hoswell has passed away.

Henry was a wonderful man who loved his family and the Eugowra community.

Henry showed extreme courage during Eugowra’s darkest day when he was trapped inside his floating house.

His service to our country included working as an Australian Federal Police Officer, and also with the State Emergency Service.

A big country music fan, Henry also had a great sense of fun. When he joined Neil Gill and I on stage in Eugowra at our country music sing-a-long,

he was dressed all in black - just like Johnny Cash! It was a privilege to have known him.

My sincere condolences to Henry’s family, friends, and the residents of Eugowra.

THE GIANTS – SPECIAL SCREENING ON AUGUST 5

THE GIANTS explores the intertwined fates of trees and humans in this cinematic portrait of environmental folk hero, gay icon, and co-founder of The Greens, Bob Brown.

From a seedling to forest elder THE GIANTS interweaves Bob’s story with the life cycle of the ancient trees he is fighting for. The hidden life of the forest is brought to life by cameras rigged high in the tree canopy, immersive point cloud animation generated from 3D tree scans, and thought-provoking insights by the likes of scientists David Suzuki, Merlin Sheldrake and David Lindenmayer.

Drawing on Bob’s lifetime of activism, from the Franklin to the Tarkine, THE GIANTS ignites an urgent conversation about the right of the Forest to exist and challenges the audience to write the next chapter.

Hosted by ECCO, Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange, this one-o demand screening of THE GIANTS is coming to Orange’s Odeon 5 Cinema, 3.30pm on Saturday, August 5.

Tickets for this special local screening event must be purchased through www.Fan-Force.com. Being a demand screening, enough seats must be sold by July 26 to ensure the screening goes ahead.

More details are available on the ECCO Facebook page and website.

A wartime cricket controversy that had local sports talking

Given the controversial Ashes dismissal of Jonny Bairstow that’s been dominating the news and even had Prime Ministers giving their two cents, we were reminded of this little piece we’d stumbled up (just two weeks ago serendipitously) from the Orange Leader nearly 80 years ago. Then, as now, there had been another dismissal given in England that was well within the rules, but debate raged as to whether it was really “cricket.” The Leader’s cricket columnist “Silly Point” was, unwillingly it seems, forced to pen the following.

CURIOUS ORANGE CRICKETERS Handled Ball—Out!

From the Orange Leader, Monday 23 July 1945, page 2

An Orange and district cricketer of mature years and much cricket experience, also possessing a more than a local reputation for consistently good all-round performances, disturbed me in my winter quarters (writes “Silly Point”). Looking really perplexed and generally perturbed where usually all is quite cool, calm and collected, he “bowled” viciously at me with: “What about this handling the ball and being given out for it? They all do it in Orange; have done so for years. Think it will come into vogue here next season ?” Due to this disturbing intrusion of my seasonal somnolence, I was not keen about things cricket, and suggested that the somewhat alarming alarmist should go, speedily, away and inter his head until the advent of cricket—and cricket weather. A cold, biting wind was operating at full Arctic blast when this semi-demented summer soul jumped in on me. Having become definitely, and especially physically, icy, I snapped: “Nothing wrong about that. It’s in the rules. If you handle the ball, when in play, without permission from your opponents, you must be given out if they appeal for ‘handling the ball.’ Go away.

Shut the door on the way out.” “Yes, but

they often do this in Orange and district competition games— seems to be quite an accepted thing—and nothing is done about it. What I mean is, there have been no appeals on the frequent occasions when a batsman has picked up the pill and tossed it back to the bowler, Can’t you say something?”

“Yes, go a long way away.” He went, very grudgingly, but his mumblings remained and annoyed me so much that I did a rush around.

You all know the little “sensation” in a cricket encounter in England recently, when “Gubby” Allen (former English Test captain) was given out for handling the ball, whereas Roper, the Australian bowler, had really appealed for a decision regarding what he considered was a temporary dislodgement of a bail, which would have been equivalent to bowling Allen. The “ump” gave Allen, who had picked up the ball and shot it back to Roper, out for having thus handled the ball, obviously it was an unfortunate misunderstanding, but the fact that this most uncommon decision was given, and published really awakened cricketers before their time. Hence my upset, and these snap comments from a trio well known to all local cricketers.

GEO TICKNER: “Handling the ball in the way

Allen apparently did is a frequent occurrence in Orange cricket, but I have never known an appeal, though it would be just as well for the young players to remember that they can be given out, on appeal, for doing this. I have, as you know, been playing cricket for more years than I am keen to look back upon, all over the West, but not once has an appeal been made when a batsman has come up the wicket slightly, picked the ball up and returned it to the chap who has been trying his hardest to get him out. Just an act of sporting courtesy. But, as I say, when doing this you are leaving yourself open to —well, what happened to Allen. That was, I think, a bit of a mistake, but if the umpire was of the opinion that the appeal was for handling the ball, which Allen obviously did, he had to abide by the rules and raise the finger. Much safer to pat the ball back with the bat—unless you ask permission of your “enemies” to toss it back by hand.”

“Big Bill” DEWHURST: Just the same as Geo. Tickner; these two old timers have played a lot of cricket together. Bill added: “More than 40 years of cricket, against all sorts and conditions, very good and some very indi erent, but cannot recall an appeal on the lines indicated in the Allen incident. I often pick the ball up and throw it back to the bowler. But you may have noticed that I always get the consent of the other chaps. Safest plan is to push the ball back along the wicket with the bat: don’t leave yourself open to any ‘happening’ then. The rule governing the point gave the umpire no option when he considered the appeal by Roper was handling the ball. Perhaps, in future -and the point now having been raised and limelighted—It would be just as well for young Orange players who seem very prone to leave their crease and pick the ball up, to close down on this practice; unless they get permission. You never know it may put over in Orange next season now that the ‘big chaps’ have advertised the business. To appeal may be according to the rules laid down by

headquarters, but—well I wouldn’t ask an umpire to do it. Has an un-cricket flavour.”

And “Big Bill” GAGIE: “Over 20 years of cricket, with a bit of Sydney first grade stu ; cannot remember an appeal for handling the ball a la Allen. No doubt about there being a misunderstanding —Roper would not have tried to get Gubby out for tossing the ball back to him— but the fact remains that the danger is lurking and can be used by an unscrupulous opponent out for ‘blood’ at all costs In Orange last season I saw many batsmen come along the wicket, pick up the pill and throw it back to the bowler, without seeking or asking permission. It was taken for granted that there was no danger of an appeal which, if made, must have been given against the batsman. Wouldn’t be cricket, of course— definitely against a real cricketer’s idea of sportsmanship—but you see what can happen. Personally, I always seek permission before doing the courtesy act. And I would perhaps be advisable for the experienced players to make this a rule in future. You never know, and nothing to lose by seeking acquiescence for your assistance to the fielding side - or using the bat instead of the hands. If you must carry on a recognised practice without penalty.”

You all can absorb those opinions. Am returning to my warm corner in an old cricket pavilion for a few more weeks. Cricket talk this weather? Ugh!

*Sir George Oswald Browning “Gubby” Allen was a fast bowler in the infamous 1932-33 English touring team, in what is forever known as the “Bodyline Series.” However, Allen refused to use bodyline tactics, which won him the approval of Australian cricket fans.

FIVE MINUTES WITH:

The Cicada Club

The Cicada Club have been getting audiences from all over the Central West up and jiving along to their timeless tracks since they formed twelve months ago. The band is made up of: Tam Wilson on the washboard; Kenneth Smith on the ukulele, harmonica and kazoo; Anne Hulak on the flute, mandolin, piano accordion and clarinet; Alex Hulak entertains on the double bass and Robert Cleary plays the guitar and vocals are covered by all band members.

I love the band name! How did you come up with it?

Ken, our ukulele player, made it up applying for a gig before the band was even formed.

Great! And, how would you describe your music?

We do roaring tunes from the 1920’s and

swinging originals, dancing numbers from the prohibition period, vaudeville to take you back in time, tunes to cheer you in tumultuous times and songs to make you get off your doggone caboose and do the lindy hop!

What musicians have inspired your band and if you could open for any Australian artist, who would it be?

New Orleans street bands, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Pokey Lafarge, Mic Conway, Memphis Jug Band, CW Stoneking and loads more. If we could open for any Australian artist it would be C.W Stoneking.

What drew you to the music industry?

Our love of music and our desire to make others happy by listening and dancing to our songs.

What’s next for your band?

We are on the cusp of recording some originals. We’ll be doing a lot more gigs out of Orange, Dubbo, Blue Mountains, Bathurst just to name a few.

Do you prefer to listen to music, or create it?

We all love to listen to music but creating it is another level of fun.

What advice would you give to other bands starting out?

Practice, don’t take it too seriously, have fun! Get confident and stick at it, go play at a JAM Orange open mic and meet fellow minded people.

What is your favourite venue to play at? Anywhere that we can create our vibe and take you back in time and drift away.

What was the most memorable show you ever played?

We have loved all our gigs, but our most memorable venue would have to be playing at The Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival in The Baroque Room. It suits us to a tee! The festival is a fun vibe across the bars in Katoomba.

What advice would you give to other bands starting out?

Practice, don’t take it too seriously, have fun!! Get confident and stick at it, go play at a JAM Orange open mic and meet fellow minded people.

Follow The Cicada Club on Facebook and Instagram or see them live at the Birdie Noshery on Thursday, July 20 from 6.30pm.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

PASSIONFRUIT WRINKLES

Like all of you, I read Ruben’s inspiration; cooking column every week and adore his recipes. The one that really struck home for me recently was his lunchbox ideas; partly because our kids go to school together and are friends, partly because Miss Nine had a lovely afternoon at their place recently and came home in awe of their kitchen, but mostly because my vibrant youngest daughter has stopped complaining about food lately.

I don’t know if this is just her getting older, or she’s just distracted with her plans of world domination and beach holidays, but she hasn’t called the Kids Helpline to report me over the amount of carrots on her plate for weeks.

So, these holidays I’ve been serving fruit for morning tea, salad for lunch, and vegetable platters for afternoon tea and with dinner. So far I’ve managed to not post any photo collages to Instagram, but it’s hard! For once I’ve got it together and there needs to be evidence of this.

Miss Nine’s favourite fruit is whichever is most expensive. Right now, she’s really into tropical fruits and declares mandarins inedible. While choosing a passionfruit, her sister helpfully pointed out that the smooth ones might look nice, but the wrinkled ones are sweeter. Miss Nine holds up each of the passionfruit next to my eyes. “What are you doing?” I ask.

“Comparing wrinkles” she replies sweetly with a big grin. I smile too, because she’s about to head away with her grandparents for a week at the beach, and I’ll miss her. I send my mother-in-law a quick text about passionfruit, and try to stay brave in the face of Miss Nine’s harsh honesty.

My phone buzzes with their reply: “lol! I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong but she’s always perfect for us.”

Miss Nine pops her head around the corner and asks what Grandma has messaged. “She said to remind you to pack your harmonica,” I say.

“Oh yeah, great idea!” she says, rummaging through the toy box. “And I should put it in my backpack so I can play my sick tunes on the drive? How long is it again?” I let her know it’s about five hours.

“Oh. in that case should I take my disco karaoke too?” I can’t bring myself to say yes to that, so instead I ask the question all parents dread in the holidays. “Are you ready to come into work with me for the morning?”

Miss Nine calls out for her sister and grabs the apology/ bribery brownies we baked for morning tea. Our first stop is a local retail business I write for, and both of the girls produce pocket/tooth fairy money and go wild. After a quick chat and my eternal gratitude for a generous staff discount, we head into the Orange City Life office.

This is Miss Nine’s favourite activity, because in real life we keep her anonymous, but in this beautiful newsroom she “exists to be adored” (her words, not mine). After handing over morning tea that Miss Nine claims to have baked (in reality she got bored one minute in and left Miss 14 to do it), she explains to everyone that she’s off to the beach tomorrow, and she’s looking forward to the jumping pillow the most.

“I’m just going to lie there, and make the other kids do all the work and bounce me around,” she explains.

“You’ve got slaves everywhere, do you?” I ask.

“Well not yet, obviously. I’ll have to enslave them when I get there,” she says.

I have no doubt she will. For a moment I feel guilty about what I’m unleashing on the other holidaymakers and her grandparents, but then I snap back to reality and smile in anticipation of a week without parental responsibility…

The other day I went to cook at a customer’s house and, cleaning the kitchen up at the end of the family meal, I saw their young kid, aged 13, start making a dessert in a mug. I won’t use his surname for privacy, but his parents allowed me to use his name: CJay.

The story goes like this:

“Would you like to try my Oreo Mug Cake?” CJay asked me while stirring all the ingredients vigorously in a mug.

“Oh thank you very much, you are very kind, but you don’t have to do that,” I replied.

“Of course I do!” CJay said. “You cooked dinner for us, so this is what I can do for you!”

I was absolutely stoked, obviously.

Not only did I try his delicious microwave Oreo Mug Cake in the microwave, but I felt so privileged to meet this 13-year-old kid with such amazing manners and empathy I decided it was something worth celebrating and showcasing publicly!

So this is it CJay, thank you very much for showing me that there’s hope for the future generations of this country. Please never stop being humble my friend!

So as I promised him, here is the recipe for the famous CJay’s mug cake — you are going to love it! This is a great activity for you and the kids to do together this school holidays.

Ingredients:

4 Oreos mushed (+1 whole one)

1/4 cup milk

1 tbsp sugar

1 tbsp flour

1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cocoa powder

Method:

1. In a mug mix together the 4 Oreos, and the rest of the ingredients — milk, sugar, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder — until well combined (‘smash it all together’, was how CJay put it)

2. Add the last whole Oreo in the centre, dunk it and cover completely.

3. Microwave for 1 minute or so.

4. Put it out of the microwave (be aware it is hot).

5. For extra love, add a scoop of your desired ice cream. I served mine with a little bit of mandarin sorbet from Spilt Milk. Delicious!

Happy holidays, Enjoy!

Don’t become a statistic.

Lean how to keep you and your money safe at End of Financial Year with Orange Credit Union.

Scam statistics published by ACCC Scamwatch reveal that $248,1055,802 has been lost by Australians to scams and fraud so far in 2023.

Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, creating believable scenarios that can be hard to detect. Unfortunately, all age groups and demographics are susceptible being a victim of a scam, it is no longer our older or less tech-savvy members of the community.

Orange Credit Union has compiled information on the scams customers have experienced, specifically targeting End of Financial Year:

Phishing emails, SMS and phone calls

Fraudsters are taking advantage of Australians who are submitting tax returns or waiting for the outcome of an

assessment. These scammers pretend to be from a government department and often request bank details or MyGov logins in order to process your tax return. The ATO will never threaten you with arrest, demand immediate payment of a tax debt or fine, or cancel or suspend your Tax File Number.

Online buying and selling

With an increase in businesses having EOFY sales, online shopping becomes a prime target for scammers. This spans across websites, marketplaces and buy swap and sell community forums. People pay for items which do not exist and are never sent. Specific items targeted are cars, puppies and fish/fish tanks. Ask for multiple photos of the product and compare the product to other similar ones available through retail or legitimate channels. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Many scam circumstances require customers to provide personal information to a scammer, whether it be remote access to a device, a password, and a user name or identification information. Never provide your personal information or make payments to callers over the phone and do not click on any links or attachments unless you’re sure of where they came from. The best line of defence is YOU.

Anyone who has provided their banking details to a scammer should contact their bank or financial institution immediately. Unfortunately in many situations, money lost due to a scam may not be recoverable.

Team Orange Credit Union are passionate about protecting the local community. Talk to us on 6362 4466 or go to www.orangecu.com.au/stay-safe to learn more.

At last, the recommended 20-year-old testing program for prostate cancer is being reviewed. Unlike breast cancer, prostate cancer cannot be self-diagnosed. Under the present recommendations to GPs, testing – which is a simple blood test – should not be carried out before 50, and ends at 75 years (unless there is a family history of prostate cancer). This

is completely out of date with today’s standards and treatments. Our group has had members as young as 38, and what do the 75-year-olds do… just disappear?

Let us hope the new guidelines look after all men.

Unlike several groups, we are not holding a Christmas in July, but at our July meeting we will be having hot soup, and we have some new informative videos from Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia on the latest treatment and assistance for prostate su erers to view.

Our meetings are open to everyone. You may have a friend or family member a ected?

Come along and learn how it a ects others… remember one in five men are a ected by prostate cancer. Further information: Ray 6362-5257 or Charlie 6361-1830.

WHAT IS THE BIBLE ANYWAY?

The word ‘bible’ is used to describe any book that is authoritative in its field – the ‘go-to book’ that describes the fundamentals. The idea is based on the Christian bible. However, what is the bible anyway?

The word ‘bible’ means books (from the Greek ‘ta biblia’), since the bible is a collection of 66 smaller books. The books are varied, written in three different languages. They include history, songs, poems, and letters; written over a large timespan. All the parts together show God’s gradually revealed plan to rescue people, whom he created but who also rejected him. The climax of the story is the birth, life, death and then resurrection of Jesus. Jesus is both divine and a man. The tension between God’s justice and mercy that is present throughout the story is resolved when Jesus accepts the punishment mankind deserves. Justice is served in the same moment that rescue is offered to all. The bible is the best-selling publication of all time. It has inspired many other works. To find out more for yourself, I encourage you to start with the climax by reading the book of the bible called ‘Luke’.

THUMBS UP to the guy at Ticketek who was selling the Taylor Swift tickets. He was flying through the queue at amazing speed and finding amazing tickets for everyone.

THUMBS UP to Bek and Bek (B1 and B2) at the head of the Swifty tickets line, who kept everyone in order, entertained and laughing, and brought a texta so people could go for toilet breaks.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Orange Lions Club and their handling of the time capsule and distribution of the contents, so well organised. We were collected and home in just 15 minutes and we didn’t have the ticket. Big job very well handled. Congratulations to all involved.

THUMBS DOWN to those wishing to ban the advertising of chocolate biscuits. How about banning gambling and alcohol ads first? I would suggest their use causes far more family problems than a few choccy biscuits.

THUMBS UP to Cooper R. at Hungry Jacks, who is a personable, professional, and e cient young man who always has a smile.

THUMBS UP to all the wonderful people for opening doors, putting petrol in the car, and o ering their service to carry things for elderly people.

THUMBS UP to the former Orange City Council Mayors and Councillors who had the foresight to approve the planting of so many trees in Orange. The spectacular autumn colours that we delight in today give testimony to Orange being called the “Colour City.”

THUMBS UP to all the early childhood educators who worked tirelessly through COVID and continue to work with major sta shortages. Unfortunately, your education, experience and knowledge has rarely been valued by government. Your dedication to early education is inspiring.

THUMBS DOWN to the hoons, hooning up Molong Road and Woodward Street in the early hours of every morning. People need to get sleep before work. This is beyond a bad joke.

THUMBS DOWN to dog owners who constantly leave their pet’s faeces on paths around Cook Park and throughout the park as well.

THUMBS UP to Doctor Kwa and the team. I now have a pain-free right shoulder and a big thank you to the nurses and doctors in the Recovery Ward at Orange Base Hospital.

HUGE THUMBS UP to Mark Burns and his retirement as greenkeeper at Orange City Bowling Club. You put so much time and e ort into your work which showed around the club and all the remarks about “the best greens this side of the mountains” from bowlers and guests. You were a true gentleman to all sta and members and always there to help anyone that needed it. We wish you nothing but the best for you and hope you don’t get bored as never saw you taking it easy turning up virtually seven days a week to maintain the grounds and greens for something like 50 years wasn’t it? Put your feet up, do some travel and have some time with your other half, from Sue and Rhonda.
