Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

A new week and new challenges to face. Besides the inevitable juggle between work and the ever-increasing load of children’s activities and other commitments, we had Covid hit our workplace with half the office working out of home this past week. We have a small staff and a strict deadline, but despite what gets thrown at us we seem to manage to get OC Life into the stands each week!

It’s been impossible not to notice just how much the cost of the weekly grocery bill has risen of late. Each week it seems there is one product or another in the trolley that costs just a little more than last week - and it certainly all adds up.

Speaking with our local food relief charity FoodCare, they say it’s really putting the pressure on more and more family budgets and there’s been an increase in people coming through their doors. FoodCare is a charity that relies on local donations, so if you can afford to give them a hand it would be really appreciated by those that really need it. You can read more from FoodCare on page 5.

Congratulations to the winners of our School of Rock ticket giveaway. Orange Theatre Company’s production of the much-loved comedy musical School of Rock opens this Friday, May 12, and five of our lucky readers have each won a double pass to opening night. If you missed out there’s still plenty of time to catch the show, which runs until Sunday, May 21.

And finally, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there!

Increase in postie dog attacks following COVID pet

boom

Australia Post has released data showing that the number of posties attacked, harassed or chased by dogs is increasing significantly.

There were an alarming 1,885 incidents involving dogs and posties between July 2022 and March 2023, already surpassing the 1,587 incidents recorded during the full 2021/22 financial year.

Australia Post has attributed some of this increase to the over a million additional dogs (a fifth of all pet dogs) brought into Australian households between 2019-2021, including during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Australia Post is urging people to make sure their dogs are safely secured at home.

“We’re seeing increased instances of our posties sustaining injuries by either falling off their vehicles while trying to avoid unrestrained dogs or getting physically

attacked by dogs jumping up and biting them,” Australia Post Executive General Manager People and Culture, Susan Davies said.

“We want our team to be able to safely deliver to all Australians, so urge dog owners to please secure their dogs in the backyard or indoors.”

New traffic arrangements as southern feeder construction begins

New traffic arrangements are now in place as the work steps up to build the next stage of Orange’s southern feeder road.

With work about to begin on a new roundabout at the intersection of Park and Shiralee Roads, detours are now in place. Vehicle access is allowed east-west through the intersection along Park Road, but the north-south route is closed to all traffic.

Access to Park Road is available via Cecil Road, while residents and businesses located south of the Park/Shiralee Road intersection, including visitors to the Philip Shaw Winery will have to use Pinnacle Road.

Vehicles can not turn onto Park Road from Shiralee Road either north or south of the intersection.

Ribbons, Rides & Ring Events: New exhibition celebrates history of our local shows

A new exhibition opening at Orange Regional Museum on Saturday, May 13, explores the history of agricultural shows across our region. The exhibition features photographs sourced from local show societies, historical societies and state and national collections.

And includes the oldest medal in the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Heritage Collection, a selection of showbags dating from the 1950s to the early 2000s, and a century-old carousel horse that was used at the Orange Show.

Ribbons, Rides & Ring Events: Agricultural Shows in the Central West opens Saturday, May 13 and will be on display until October 15.

To curb the mass closure of bank branches in the bush, Member for Calare Andrew Gee is calling for the legislation of minimum service obligations for the banking sector in regional Australia.

The call follows ANZ Bank announcing a record profit surge of 23 per cent to $3.8 billion in its latest half. The National Australia Bank too has recorded a 17 per cent jump in its six-month cash profit to $4.07 billion.

Despite these astronomical profits, last month about a dozen bank branches in regional Australia were axedincluding ANZ branches at Lithgow, Mudgee and Parkes, Mr Gee said.

“Enough is enough. With the big banks showing no sign of slowing their retreat from regional Australia, the

government must look at legislating minimum service obligations for banks – to stop the banks abandoning the bush,” he said.

“Across our region, the Cabonne Shire no longer has a single stand-alone bank branch.

Blayney, Molong, Portland, Cowra and Canowindra are struggling after branches ceased operating, while people in Gulgong, Wellington and Oberon are trying to make do with reduced service hours.

“Legislating minimum service obligations for banks would ensure that people living in regional areas have equality of access to banking services with their city cousins by requiring banks to provide in-person services in country areas.” Mr Gee concluded.

Council childcare facilities fitted with defibs

Orange City Council has installed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at all of its childcare facilities.

AEDs have been fitted at the Courallie Park, Spring Street and Yarrawong preschool and early education centres, Occasional Care Cottage in Kite Street and Out of School Hours Care at Calare and Orange public schools, at a cost of $1,800 each.

All of Orange City Council’s educators have first aid certificates and have been trained in the use of AEDs and performing CPR, however, the AEDs are designed to be used by anyone in an emergency situation.

New murals designed for the John Lomas Skate Park will help guide younger riders who are learning how to skate.

Local artists Sonny Day and Joel Cameron from TOTEM Skateboarding came up with the designs for the new murals after a consultation session with local skaters.

The design features a series of snakes that act as visual cues to show riders the best paths (or lines) to use through the skate park. Different colours in the design have been used to create specific lines for beginner skaters to safely build up confidence. Intermediate and advanced skaters will follow the different shades of green, which leads them into more challenging moves.

The skate park upgrade is funded by $70,000 from the NSW Government’s Graffiti Management Grants.

The main area of the skate park will be closed for the painting project from Monday, May 15, to Friday, May 26, weather permitting.

Orange City Council will hold an open day at the Community Services Centre, Giyalang Ganya, on Friday, May 12 to celebrate Neighbourhood Centre Week.

Members of the public are invited to meet the team and discover the range of community services available such as aged care, disability support, youth services, road safety, migrant support, community development and children’s services.

Visitors to the open day can browse information stands about each service, win a prize in a game of bingo and enjoy a free barbecue, snacks, tea and coffee.

The Open Day will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Community Services Centre, Giyalang Ganya, 286 Lords Place.

FoodCare seeing growing need as cost of living pressure bites

“The need has grown incredibly; definitely this year,” says Foodcare Orange volunteer coordinator Anne Hopwood.

It has now been 10 years since a group of local agencies got together to form the food relief charity FoodCare, which provides those experiencing financial hardship with a range of fresh and frozen foods, and household items for free or at a discounted rate.

Operating first out of the Glenroi Community Centre, FoodCare was able to relocate to its own premises in March Street in 2019, where they have set up a small “supermarket” where people can shop for what they need and help their budget go further.

But as anyone shopping for groceries recently would know, prices of numerous basic goods have skyrocketed and it is really putting pressure on local families, says Anne. “We are just seeing more people coming and saying they’re doing it hard, they haven’t got much money… You don’t get much for ten dollars now, so it’s all much harder for people,” she says.

Previously open for four shopping sessions a week — on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday mornings and Thursday afternoons — FoodCare Orange is now opening Friday mornings to make sure those that need it can purchase food and household basics to get by.

“As I said, our numbers have just skyrocketed recently,” says Anne. “In a week, we would probably have 150 to 160 people, and that’s only within nine hours [that FoodCare is open] that they’re coming through.”

Those shopping at FoodCare must spend a minimum of eight dollars, but then on top of their purchases, they can get free bread and free fresh vegetables.

“Veggies are so expensive, so that’s our way of helping people more and we were only able to do that because of the amount of financial donations people have given us over the last year,” Anne explains.

“Shopping at FoodCare — We’ve done the sums and it’s really just about half of what you would do in a supermarket. Of course,

you can’t get everything here, but what we like to think is that you can get the basics and enough for a couple of meals.”

To stock their store, FoodCare makes regular orders of goods and groceries through the national hunger relief charity Foodbank Australia. They also purchase meat, milk and eggs locally, but much of what’s on their shelves comes through generous donations from locals.

When speaking with Orange City Life last week, FoodCare received a donation from Courallie Park Preschool, who had organised a food drive while teaching their children about the Islamic observance of Ramadan and the principle of Sadaqah, of “voluntary charity”.

“We did this over one month because Ramadan goes for 30 days, and our children just put in something every week, so it was really good,” says educator Louise Delarue. Courallie Parks, Louise says, is now speaking with FoodCare Orange to see how they can help more in the future.

“It’s a very generous community. Christmas

time is really fantastic, people just come in and hand us a check,” says Anne.

“Plus home gardeners grow veggies and when they’ve got a bit of a glut they’ll come in and say have some tomatoes or zucchinis or whatever and we would love to expand that side and get more people actually growing veggies for us.”

But now, more than ever, Anne says they could really use a little extra if people can spare it.

“If somebody wants to help us, we’d appreciate a bag of groceries, or if you’re a big gardener, we’d love your produce…any fruit and veggies are just fantastic,” she says. FoodCare Orange, 142 March Street, is now open every Tuesday to Friday morning from 10.30am to 1pm and Thursday afternoons from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Community Centre returns to Orange Uniting Church A

warm and welcoming community centre has reopened at the Orange Uniting Church offering a safe place for people to relax, socialise, and maybe even enjoy a little light refreshment.

The community centre, now located within the church in Anson Street, opened on Monday, May 1 with church members, local service providers and Member for Orange Phil Donato present for the occasion.

The church-run community centre is essentially a reopening of that formerly operated from the building by Fusion Central West, which closed after the Christian youth and community development organisation relocated in 2021.

Orange Uniting Church pastor Joshua Bleyerveen is passionate about building community and is happy to see the reopening of what he considered to be a vital service.

“The heart of our mission here is how can we join in with what’s happening in the community and have the community discover the life of the church,” he said.

“We’re really about community centres, and hot meals and looking after emergency needs. We’re relationship-first. It’s about deep

relational engagement, getting to know people – people feeling seen and heard, and us being responsive.

“Sometimes we’re not experts,” Joshua continued, “but we’re in touch with other services that can help.”

Perhaps happiest of all is congregation member, Colin Kearle, for whom the Fusionrun community centre was a life-changing experience, giving him the opportunity to gain workplace skills, connections and, most importantly, a sense of belonging.

“I absolutely broke down when Fusion closed down,” Colin said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to be doing what I am today.”

Colin had pushed for the opening of this new community centre, which hopes will see others reap the benefits he has.

“I hope that we’ll grow, we need to grow,” Colin said. “This is a family to me, it’s unreal.”

“This is a big day for all of us… well, especially for me!”

The Orange Uniting Church community centre is open every Monday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm. For more information about the Community Centre contact Orange Uniting Church on 63625788.

The making of a sporting legacy

There was a buzz of excitement at Cadia recently with a very special visit from an Australian sporting icon. This year’s 2023 Melbourne Cup trophy will be made from gold mined at Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations.

Coined as the horse race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup is an integral part of Australian sporting tradition with the Victorian Racing Club undertaking a tender process every year to appoint a mining company to source the gold for its extraordinary 18 carat gold trophy.

Produced and refined locally near Sydney, each element of the 1.65-kilogram trophy is meticulously handcrafted over 250 hours with

every curve, every angle, every dimension within 1/10 of a millimeter of the original design. Each of the three handles represents the owner, trainer, and jockey - and this design has remained the same for an entire century.

The Cup paid homage to its ancestral home 1.4 kilometres underground at Cadia with colleagues taking the chance to see and hold the famous trophy.

As part of a national tour, the Cup is set to return to Orange later this year offering locals the chance to learn more about the history of the Cup and its connection to Newcrest, as it tours around Australia before making its way to Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne for the main event on Tuesday 3 November 2023.

Winter Olympian inspiring local kids to unleash their full potential

Riding a small sled down a frozen track at 130 kilometres per hour while lying face down and head-first is not a sport for everyone, but it’s one that’s seen Australian Olympic skeleton athlete Nick Timmings make his mark on the world stage.

In Orange last week, Nick was touring local schools, sharing his own journey from Perth to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and inspiring kids to find their passion and work hard to achieve their goals whether it be on the sporting field or in the classroom.

This was the first school tour in NSW for Western Australian, Nick who visited

students at Bletchington Public School, Anson Street School and Canowindra High School as part of the ‘Olympics Unleashed’ program.

Nick said it is all about trying to inspire kids to unleash their full potential, by sharing his open personal journey and the lessons he has had to learn along the way.

“I think sometimes athletes get put on a bit of a pedestal, and going to these schools and chatting to these kids makes them realise that we’re just normal people,” Nick said.

“We also came from humble beginnings, and have just worked hard to get to the Olympic level – it just lets the kids know that if they work hard enough, and are dedicated enough, they can achieve the same sort of things… it’s not like we all came from privilege – we just worked hard to get to where we are.”

Nick was a relative latecomer to the sport of skeletoning, starting out in 2012 at age 20. But with a background in soccer and athletics, Nick quickly made a name for himself on the competitive circuit.

A decade later, Nick successfully qualified

for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where he recorded a Personal Best time of 1:01.78 and finished 25th overall on combined times.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to get to that level and represent Australia,” Nick humbly said of his Olympic status.

And Nick’s future in the sport looks bright, bringing home a silver medal from the Open Asian Championships held in PyeongChang, South Korea, in March. He is already hard at work and back in training, getting ready for the return of the competition season in November.

Meet our Volunteer of the Month –Michelle Stevenson

Over the past few months, Orange City Life and Ashcroft’s IGA have been shining a light on some of the amazing volunteers who freely give their time to make life a little better for others in our city.

This month, we meet Orange Senior Citizen’s Association volunteer, Michelle Stevenson, who spends three days a week in the Orange Seniors Village Hub kitchen cooking up lunch for elderly locals, giving them a tasty meal and a social outing to look forward to.

“I only joined in August last year, and I’m very humbled to be singled out,” Michelle said.

Retired and also doing some foster caring, Michelle got involved with the seniors’ lunch after a little prodding from Orange Seniors Village Hub Project

Leader, Sam Vennard.

“I know Sam through hockey and she said there are things to do down here and so I went, ‘Okay’ — she knows the ones to get!” Michelle said.

“I’m not the greatest cook in the world but I thought it was just something different.”

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Michelle and other volunteers prepare lunch for local seniors. The idea is to provide a social outing to help reduce social isolation and possibly spark new friendships for our community’s most vulnerable.

“We like them to let us know that they’re coming, but they can just walk in if they want to… we try to do meals that will stretch,” she said.

“We have a few people who come down and play scramble in the morning and then stay for lunch. It’s just mainly trying to get older people out of their houses, to come down and start mixing.

“It’s good. There’s a wide variety of people out there to meet. I’ve met a lot of great people over lunch — and it’s a small world sometimes — people with interesting stories of their lives and it’s a very good mix of people.”

Do you know someone who goes out of their way to make life better in our community?

It could be a friend, neighbour, colleague, committee member or co-worker — we want to hear from you!

To nominate a person you deem worthy for our Volunteer of the Month, send us their contact information along with details of their good deed, and they will be in the running to be rewarded with a $100 gift voucher from Ashcroft’s IGA.

Help mums and bubs in need this Mother’s Day

As the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on family budgets, a group of local volunteers have put the call out for 6,000 nappies to make sure mums in need have enough to keep their little ones clean, healthy and happy.

The ‘Mother’s Day Collective’ is an annual Mother’s Day drive for donations of new and leftover disposable nappies which will be redistributed to families in crisis. Now in its 10th year, it is an initiative of The Nappy Collective, an Australian not-for-profit that focuses solely on collecting disposable nappies and distributing them to families in crisis.

Chloe Garlick stumbled across the work of the Nappy Collective after having her first child last year. She said it was the thought of families missing out on such an important necessity that inspired her to get involved.

“I just couldn’t imagine as a mum, or a parent not being able to change my child often enough or wondering if we had enough nappies to get through the week.

So, thinking other parents might not have a choice really drove me to try and start this,” Chloe said.

Chloe started out as a “crew” volunteer, helping where she could. Finding herself delivering donated nappies outside of Orange, Chloe stepped up to become the regional leader for the Nappy Collective in the central west and has been the driving force behind the return of local collection points — many that dropped off due to the challenges COVID brought these last few years.

Chloe works with local service providers and other community partners to help distribute the donated nappies to vulnerable families.

“We asked them how many vulnerable families they see and whether they have a need for nappies and pretty much all of them said, Yes, absolutely!” she said.

“Most of them rely on donations from the public, so it’s not always a sure thing. And they said they see lots of families with young kids, and families who are struggling to find nappies, so the need was there.”

This Mothers Day Collective, May 8-21, Chloe and her crew of volunteers have put the word out that 6,000 nappies are needed!

It could be any loose disposable nappies left over from a packet, or your own child

has outgrown, or donations of new packets of nappies – all are needed and very much appreciated! Simply drop any nappies you can afford to give at collection points around Orange, including: Rise Early Learning, Seymour Street Early Learning, The Pinnacle Physiotherapy Clinic, Early Years Music School (located at The Church of Christ, Orange), Chaos and Karma, and Ashcroft’s SUPA IGA.

While the annual Mother’s Day Collective is a way to push for donations and get the word out about the work of the Nappy Collective, donations are needed all year round, Chloe said.

And it would not be possible to do what they do without volunteers, she added, encouraging people who might be interested in helping out to get in touch.

“It can be as little as an hour a month,” Chloe said. “And we’re also targeting people with different skill sets – everyone’s diverse skill range really helps to drive these campaigns.”

LEST WE FORGET

Thank you to everyone who attended an ANZAC Day service or paused to remember and reflect in their own way on the enormous sacrifice that our servicemen and women have made for our country through the generations.

The men and women who’ve served Australia never asked for much in return. One thing they did ask is that we remember them. That sacred duty of remembrance is the responsibility of all Australians. It currently rests with us, and we will, in turn, pass it to future generations.

From Gallipoli and the Western Front to Tobruk, Kokoda, Kapyong in Korea, Long Tan, Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, and countless other places, Australians have served our nation in uniform with pride and distinction.

This year I attended the dawn service at Bathurst, and then services at Wallerawang and Lithgow. Later in the afternoon, I visited the Orange ExServices Club for a quick game of twoup, but I didn’t have much luck this year!

I then attended The Retreat service at Orange Cenotaph. Trumpeter Derek

Two-up after at the Ex-Services

Johns and the Australian Air Force Cadets 329 Squadron drew formalities to a close on a full day of remembrance for Orange and our region.

Our sincere appreciation to all RSL Sub Branches, veterans’ organisations and community groups who organised services of remembrance. It is vitally important to our local communities and country, and we really appreciate the effort and that made ANZAC Day 2023 such a special one across the Central West.

ANNUAL CWA CONFERENCE

It was wonderful to join many amazing Country Women’s Association members from across NSW at its 101st AGM held in Bathurst!

The organisation brings together women from all walks of life who are incredibly passionate about making their country communities the best they can be, and who push for the best and brightest outcomes for the bush.

The contribution the CWA makes to bettering the bush is massive.

The CWA is definitely more than just scones (although they’re

pretty good at making them, too!)

It was an honour to attend this year’s conference, and to see it held in our region. It celebrated the group’s achievements over the past year, and discussed its priorities in education, health, environment, transport and telecommunications for the coming 12 months.

THE VOICE INFO SESSION

It was fantastic to join many members of the Orange community last week at an information session on the Voice to Parliament.

The Orange Region Voice Working Group put together a wonderful presentation which really helped explain where the Voice has come from, and what it hopes to achieve.

With the referendum on the horizon, it was great to have this opportunity to listen and learn more about the Voice and what it means for our region and for our nation.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

All the moments

There are a few things that I just KNOW. I don’t look good with a fringe. The maximum number of pizza shapes I can fit in my mouth stacked together is five. And all moments, no matter how good or bad, will end eventually. This last fact was driven home to me last week, because, gastro. You see, having someone waterboard you with vomit every sixteen minutes as you stay awake for 43 hours straight might be referred to as “torture” or a “war crime” in military circles. But parents refer to this as simply a “weekend”, you know, the superrelaxing two days at home with your kids between each block of five days at work. But still, the spewing stopped… just in time for the coldest day of the year so far complete with sleet and snow. The perfect weather for washing seven sets of bedding — and all of your towels. But it stopped. We all collapsed in an exhausted heap and by Monday everyone was fine.

Parenting is just a collection of moments. The good as well as the bad. The best and worst bit of it all is that none of these moments last. You will recover from the birth. The sleepless nights don’t last forever. You won’t always be struggling to get milk into a tiny baby. But that’s only because that tiny baby isn’t yours for very long.

You’ll cradle your baby in your arms as gently as possible, holding them close enough to sniff their hair. Screaming and kicking two-year-olds will be dragged away from playgrounds, tucked under an arm and marched home. You’ll half drag/ half carry their damn scooter behind you. Four-year-olds, exhausted from preschool, will tuck their head into your neck and fall asleep against your chest before you reach the car. Hold them. Tight. Because one day you’ll carry them on your hip, place them on the ground and never pick them up again.

The toddler tantrums stop, but so too do the super snuggly toddler cuddles. The never-ending task of making school lunches ends. Abruptly. Because one day, your three-year-old who loves ham and cheese triangle sandwiches will be nine. And they will make their own lunch, thank you very much!

The kindergartener who held onto your hand with all their might to cross a busy road won’t even walk next to you by the end of primary school. Soon enough they’ll ride a bike, get a license and wave goodbye as they drive into the sunset. You’ll wave back, with heart-bursting pride. Then glance down at your empty palm, where those chubby fingers once grasped.

Miss Eight has been the hilarious storyteller of our family since she could talk and at dinner launches into the details of her latest playground battle over colourful rocks. She concludes with the disappointing intervention by a teacher, “…and by then Mr C had tooken all the rocks away.”

‘Tooken’ was her word for taken, and one of the very last words she learned to correctly pronounce. So much so that it still slips into conversation occasionally. Tonight I’m instantly transported back in time six years, to a dinner with a two-yearold in a booster seat talking about having something confiscated at daycare as her eight-year-old big sister comforts her.

I open my mouth to reminisce about this with everyone, but the conversation has already moved on. The moment has passed, now and six years ago.

I take a deep breath and allow myself one last second to time travel back into the now and smile, ready to embrace whatever the next moment is.

Make a “Chick Flick” date with mum this Mothers Day weekend

hether you’re a mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt or grandmother, this Mother’s Day weekend Central West Disc Golf invites you to check out what’s one of the most inclusive, addictive, low-cost, fun and fastest-growing sports in the world.

The Central West Chick Flick 2023 — this Saturday May 13 — is the brainchild of Molong local, Sharon Costa, who reckons the accessible and social nature of disc golf is a great way to bring

Wwomen together for a fun day of highly addictive sport.

“Saturday will see ladies and girls from across the Central West of NSW and as far afield as Sydney and Canberra, getting together in Molong for a fun, social and engaging day of one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the world,” said Sharon, who is the tournament director for Central West Chick Flick 2023

“Disc golf has exploded in popularity in recent years because it is accessible to everyone and has a relaxed social

aspect to it which brings many into the sport.”

Sharon said it is estimated that disc golf is now played by 3-4 million people worldwide, and Australia now boasts over 100 dedicated disc golf courses.

“With one of the best in the country right here in Molong!” she added.

The Central West Chick Flick 2023 is a one-day, female-only, beginner-friendly event and it doesn’t matter whether you are an expert or absolute beginner to expert, Sharon said.

“There will be discs to borrow for those that don’t have any of their own already,” she added.

Central West Chick Flick 2023 takes place this Saturday, May 13, at the Molong Disc Golf Course (located within the grounds of Molong Golf Course), Euchareena Road, Molong.

Registration opens from 8am with a player meeting at 9am. Cost is $10 a round, which includes a light lunch and souvenir gift for all players.

Check out Central West Disc Golf on Facebook for more details.

Orange Winter Jazz Festival returns this King’s Birthday Long Weekend

The Orange Winter Jazz Festival returns for a second year this King’s Birthday Long Weekend, with a packed program of performers spanning the broad church of jazz.

Featuring Australia’s best-known jazz artists alongside leading local and emerging artists from Orange and the Central West, the three-day festival, June 9–11, will be staged across several CBD venues including the Orange Regional Conservatorium, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, the Uniting Church Hall, Lord Anson and Royal Hotel.

After a successful first outing in 2022, the not-for-profit SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) and JAM Orange are excited to be back with a big winter line-up of music in Orange this June.

“It’s a weekend of blues, roots and jazz. Although the name is ‘jazz festival’ it’s a lot

more broad than that,” CEO and Executive Producer at SIMA Amy Curl said.

“Harry James Angus from Cat Empire will be one of our headlining acts; many people will know him. The Necks are a hugely popular cult band in the jazz and improvised music scene – they’re huge obviously.

“Some other people who may or may not be familiar to lots of people but are incredible artists are Moussa Diakite – he’s a Malian and blues legend, and he’ll be joining us for our opening party,” Amy continued.

“And Karen Lee Andrews, of course, is such a rising star of the blues scene.”

Another highlight, she said, will be Kenyan singer Lisa Oduor-Noah who will really open people’s eyes to what jazz music can be.

“She’s a Berkeley-trained jazz singer who lived in the States for some time but she’s now based in Nairobi. She does this beautiful

neo-soul act and I think she’ll be really popular for people who might not usually think jazz is for them,” Amy said.

“Jazz is more a state of mind rather than a music genre, and I think this festival will really open people’s minds to what their perception of jazz might be,” she said, adding that they are really hoping to build on the success of the 2022 festival.

“We had a wonderful, exceptional response from artists and audiences, both local and out of region, and it was very clear to us in the first year that this is just such a wonderful place to do an event like this.”

The 2023 festival line-up also includes the popular Wellington-based Tin Roof Big Band and local favourites Felix Albert and the Gentlemanly Two, Matt Arthur, Pat O’Donnell, and The Cicada Club.

“We’re focused on bringing the best

Australian Jazz to the festival, but to provide a platform for the best jazz, blues and roots from the central west is also a really important part,” Amy said.

And, in slight a change from last year’s arrangements, there will be tickets available to single performances, which means you don’t have to commit to a whole weekend of live music.

“But the general tickets really allow you to come and go where you like over the weekend,” Amy said.

But you can also head down to the Royal Hotel, who will again host a free ‘Live and Local’ stage featuring up-and-coming artists, local heroes and school bands. Head to owjf.com.au for tickets and further festival information.

The hills of the Central West will come alive with the sounds of the Sydney Symphony performing at the Orange Civic Theatre this June.

The Orchestra are no strangers to the region, their history of performing in Orange dates back to their first-ever regional tour in 1938! In fact, this year marks 85 years of them taking music outside Sydney.

This concert on June 2 will feature three memorable favourites: Beethoven’s First Symphony, Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite and the Oboe Concerto by Richard Strauss – featuring the Orchestra’s celebrated Principal Oboe Diana Doherty as soloist – showcasing the full power and emotional range of the Orchestra.

With Beethoven’s first symphony, he launched music into a bold new era. More than 200 years later it still packs a punch, and in the hands of the Sydney Symphony, you will feel its full impact.

The Magic of The Symphony

Edvard Grieg is best known for his epic ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, and although his Holberg Suite is on a smaller scale every moment is bursting with life.

Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto was one of the last major works he composed, and it is full of nostalgia and affection. But despite the romantic tone it demands great virtuosity and presents a serious challenge to the soloist.

Two-time ARIA Award-nominated Doherty has performed this concerto countless times, first encountering it more than 40 years ago. She describes it as “a real endurance test”.

“It has taken me a long time to really feel that it’s all internalised. But now I can perform it so that I am simply communicating the music and the meaning – not having to think, ‘Here I slow down, and here I play soft, and here…’,” says Doherty with a laugh.

Life experience, too, has given her a different

perspective on the work.

“In a really good work there’s always more you can discover,” Doherty says. “There is always something more that you can bring to it just from having different life experiences. You then can see something in a slightly different way.”

And of course, there is the extraordinary experience of performing as a soloist with a full symphony orchestra at your back, and the unique alchemy that occurs in every new performance. That’s what keeps Doherty’s enthusiasm for performing alive, and why what makes each performance unique.

“You can have a plan about performing a piece, but no two concerts are ever going to be the same,” she says. “Each performance of it is a kind of a magic that happens in the moment with that constellation of players and the audience.”

Now it is Orange’s turn to experience that magic...

Even after a 14-year career as a medium and energy healer, Simon Hay readily admits he’s not what you might typically expect a medium to be.

Born in New Zealand, Simon played representative rugby as a teen, leaving school to work on dairy and sheep farms across the North Island of New Zealand.

At age twenty-two, Simon relocated to Australia and worked as a plumber, until an out-of-body meditation experience, he says awoke something inside him.

“By default I’m in a spiritual industry, or what people think is New Age, or alternative, but I’m none of those things,” Simon says with a laugh.

“I have a farming background. I used to be a plumber. I just have a unique skill set,” he continues. “I really enjoy having sceptics in the audience – I like surprising people.”

On Saturday, May 20, Simon is returning to Orange to showcase some of this skill set, giving a demonstration of

psychic mediumship at the Orange City Bowling Club.

The session will involve live readings with people from the audience and a ‘Q and A’ where Simon is happy to answer questions about his career, and spirit and energy healing.

This will be Simon’s fourth visit to Orange and he says he’s built up a strong following in our city.

“At the event I’m going to be talking to spirits. I’ll be able to share a lot of names, stories, information – whatever the spirit is aware of,” Simon says.

“There’s often a lot of tears — and a lot of laughter! I like encouraging people. I just see amazing things in them, and like talking them up.”

See Simon Hay live at the Orange City Bowling Club on Saturday, May 20. Arrive to be seated by 7:15pm. This is a show suitable only for those 16 years and over. Purchase your tickets at www.ocbc.org.au

4 on the 4loor celebrates 24 year of live, local original music!

Orange’s live music institution 4 on the 4loor celebrated its quartercentenary milestone at the Victoria Hotel on Saturday, May 6.

Live on stage for the 4loor’s 25th-anniversary show were: girls on aake, Sam Bucca, Bec, Ado!, Amber, and The Kenny Feather Band.

Over its 25-year history there have been 316 shows and more than 1,260 performances at the 4loor. The monthly band showcase was the vision of Jon Carter, who saw the need for giving local bands the opportunity to play original music.

Twenty-five years on and Jon is still the driving force behind the 4loor, which will return to the Vic on June 3 with Clinton Hoy, Fireball Sally, Simple Stone and Running with Knives.

Beef Cheeks Rock!

If there is something that really excites me it’s eating warming winter meat dishes with a spoon. I find that there is something really sexy about seeing a beautiful piece of beef falling apart just by applying a little bit of pressure without the need for a knife.

As I’ve said before, I grew up in a very humble family where secondary cuts of meat were the way to go. I was reading the other day that one million people – including one in seven children – are living below the poverty line in New South Wales. That very day, I received a message through Instagram from a reader asking me what type of cut of meat was the ‘best’ for a large family.

I was immediately taken back to memories of the beautiful stews and braises my mum used to make with cheap pieces of protein. I know that a lot of readers are used to barbecuing cuts of beef, lamb or pork. However, I’d like to demystify the stigma of what is known as ‘second-class cuts’ of meat. Now more than ever we have to see the value in these cuts of proteins. Trust me, they are the way to offer our kids a nutritional diet, without putting a big hole in our pockets. Remember that the ‘second-class cuts’

of meats have much more intramuscular fat, or marbling, that makes it extremely tender and flavourful when cooked. They are absolutely delicious and perfect for an autumn and winter dinner! As a kid, I was always fascinated by the texture of the meat, the richness of the sauce and the complexity of all the slow cooked flavours. And it is not just a home cooking favourite of mine. When I worked at the two-hatted restaurant, MoVida, in Sydney I can assure you that ‘carrilleras with PX’ (pork cheeks) was one of the best sellers, proving that humble produce can be the hero in a trendy city restaurant.

Go to your butcher and ask for secondclass pieces of meat, slow cook them with love, use the leftovers for some pasta inspirations, freeze them for other nights, etc.. You’ll see how using these types of protein will start reducing your shopping budget.

INGREDIENTS

4 x 200g beef cheeks, remove excess fat and sinew

1½ tbsp plain flour

Splash of extra virgin olive oil

1 cup of red wine

1 large red onion, diced

2 garlic cloves, crushed

2 large carrots, peeled, diced

2 capsicums, diced

700ml passata

2 cups (500ml) beef stock

2 bay leaves

2 thyme sprigs

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 180ºC. Pat beef dry with a paper towel. Add flour and seasoning on a plate and toss to coat them lightly.

2. Heat half the oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish over medium heat. Cook beef for 3-4 minutes, in batches, until browned. Set beef aside on a plate.

3. Add the remaining oil to the casserole and cook onion, garlic, carrot and capsicum for a few minutes until caramelised and soft. Add the glass of wine and reduce it very well!

4. Add the passata, stock, bay leaves and thyme. Bring to the boil and return the beef to the dish.

5. Remove from heat, cover the surface with a ‘cartouche’ , a rounded piece of baking paper and cover with a lid.

6. Cook in the oven for 2½ hours to 3 hours, or until tender. Season to taste, remove and discard bay leaves and thyme stalks. Remove the beef cheeks and blend all the veggies to get an awesome sauce (pass it through a sieve to get a restaurant-quality result)

7. Serve beef cheeks with some pan-fried vegetables or mashed potatoes.

CHEF’S TIPS

1. Beef cheeks could be substituted with other second-class cuts.

2. Sweet potato mash or garlic white rice is a healthy and delicious option to serve with beef cheeks.

3. This recipe is ideal for freezing

With expansive rural views, the beautiful modern fourbedroom homestead epitomises sophisticated country style. Impeccably finished, this spacious family home is sure to tick most of your boxes.

The perfect entertainer, the home’s airy open living spaces and well-appointed modern kitchen flow seamlessly out to the alfresco dining area, which overlooks a stunning and wellmaintained garden.

All four bedrooms include built-in robes and the master has a generous ensuite. The home also includes an additional storage room, a study, spacious laundry, and an attached double garage.

If you’re after relaxed country living, this is a property worth your consideration.

“It’s a near-new home, only five to six years old and quite a spacious home, with room to boot with the five acres there,” Elders Emms Mooney property and livestock sales agent, Ben Redfern said.

“You are only a stone’s throw from Orange, but you’ve got space that you can’t afford in Orange.”

The five acres are split into two large paddocks and along with the homestead, the property has animal shelters for horse lovers, a large machinery shed, four 28,000-litre rainwater tanks and an equipped bore.

“You can get out of town, off a house block and have a little more space with room for a pony, or for the kids to ride a motorbike and still only be a 15-minute drive back into town,” Ben said.

“A near-new house on a spacious block where you’ve got room to grow, enjoy the village living and be close to Orange without the price tag.”

This magnificent property at 111 Spring Hill Road, Spring Hill, is bound to be popular, so if you think it’s the change of lifestyle you are looking for, get in quick and don’t miss out.

The Avid Gardener’s… Top 10 garden jobs for late autumn

Passionate local gardeners Henrietta Hood and Peta Swift, co-founders of The Avid Gardener, have kindly agreed to share a little regular gardening advice with our readers. This week, Henrietta gives us her list of the Top 10 jobs worth tackling in the garden this autumn.

THE EDIBLE GARDEN

Plant the following seedlings in your veggie patch for a bumper winter crop: Brassicas (kale, cauliflower and broccoli); Broad beans and peas; Carrots and beetroot.

DIVIDE EVERGREEN PERENNIALS

Now is the time to dig up and divide those evergreen perennials (Bearded irises, catmint, lambs ears, achillea, etc.) and fill any bare spots in the garden. Or pot them up and give them away to family and friends.

TRIM HEDGES

Encourage thicker growth by trimming your

hedges regularly. But hold off in winter when frosts are prevalent to prevent the browning of foliage.

WEED THE GARDEN

Whoever said, “A job done properly only needs doing once” clearly wasn’t a gardener! Weeds are inevitable. They can, however, be minimised and it is a job worth doing again and again as removing weeds reduces competition for nutrients and helps your plants to thrive.

MULCH, MULCH, MULCH!

Tuck your plants up for winter with a lovely organic sugarcane blanket. Mulch keeps soil temperatures warmer, reduces weed competition, encourages microbial activity and also breaks down to create organic matter your plants will love. Apply a thick layer of at least 8cm and top up again in spring.

CLEAN AND OIL TOOLS

On the cooler days, it’s time to get your tools ready for winter pruning. Clean with soapy water and a scouring brush to remove any lingering pathogens. Oil moving parts.

PROPAGATE!

Nature is incredibly giving and I think one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Almost everything in the garden can be propagated or will self-seed. Don’t let them go to waste, share with family, friends and your community.

COMPOST FALLEN LEAVES

Create your own nutrient gold by composting leaves. The perfect addition to your veggie patch.

FEED YOUR GARDEN

It’s time to feed your garden. We are fans of Yates dynamic lifter. It’s an organic slowrelease fertiliser that stinks to high heaven,

but your plants will love you for it! Spread it like you’re feeding chickens.

LAWN MAINTENANCE

With the weather cooling it’s time to raise your mower blades, leave your lawn at a higher length, and mow less often to encourage deeper root systems. Aerate and feed for a luscious green lawn in spring.

I was one of the estimated 18.8 million people who tuned in to watch the coronation of King Charles III last Saturday evening. It was incredible to see the crown jewels being used for their actual purpose. I remember seeing them from behind the glass box when I was 12 years old and we visited the Tower of London where they are housed. As each item was brought forward to the King, I was amazed that they were actually handling these priceless objects. To then see his rich, golden, purple and jewelencrusted crown placed on his head, I found myself being moved as I witnessed such a significant moment in the history of Britain. Regardless of where you sit within the monarchist-republican debate here in Australia, the coronation of the King was a momentous occasion. It showed us that the traditions of the monarchy still carry a great deal of meaning for so many. The ceremony itself was incredibly rich in imagery. Apart from the actual crowning, there were two moments of the ceremony that moved me, but for two different reasons. The first was early in the service when King Charles III was presented with a Bible from the current leader of the Church of Scotland. As he did, he said the words: ‘Receive this book, the most valuable thing that this world affords.’ To hear such a clear proclamation of the worth and value of the Bible in the context of a King’s coronation in our current cultural moment was deeply powerful. It may have even

produced an involuntary ‘Amen!’ from me in my lounge room. The second part of the coronation that I reacted to, was the anointing of the King behind a screen. The act of anointing is the idea of setting apart someone for a particular service. It is deeply rooted in the Old Testament practice of anointing kings. But doing it behind a screen so that people were unable to see what was going on just made me sad. Not because we didn’t get to see the famous gold spoon, but because of what it communicated. It communicated a message that said the sacred is to be hidden from the world. This goes completely against the message of Christianity. Because the key moment of the crucifixion of Jesus, was the Temple curtain being torn from top to bottom as Jesus dies (Mark 15:37-38). This symbolised that, because of Jesus, we have access to God. The sacred is not to be hidden from the world. All have been revealed. But what does all this mean for us and our life and times? As I reflect on this question, I think that it shows us how deeply ingrained Christianity is in our Western culture, whether we like to acknowledge it or not. It may seem like mere tradition, but each ceremonial act carried with it deep meaning. In a world where society is moving at a rapid pace and where we seem to be in a constant state of flux and change, the coronation ceremony, and the amount of global interest in this significant historical event, has shown us that perhaps we don’t mind the tradition after all.

A great game

This week’s photo shows part of the large crowd which cheered CYMS on to a win over Emmco in the first-grade rugby league match at Wade Park on Sunday 18 May 1958.

CYMS won the match 18-5, despite being one man short.

Play was very even and scoring did not start until after 30 minutes of play, but gradually CYMS gained the upper hand. Tries were scored by E Haydon, T Commins, J Hennessy and T Hunt.

A HEARTY THUMBS UP and congratulations to all those connected to My Tech Mate. They rectified my problem in record time with smiling faces and commitment beyond belief! They restored my confidence in the young workers of today. Well done team and may you continue to grow and prosper!

THUMBS DOWN to the Hyundai Getz driver with broken indicators. Get your lights fixed because no one knows you’re turning.

THUMBS DOWN to the people who park their cars on the front lawn of the Orange Health Services. Some are parked close to a large fire hydrant which could be considered a major risk impeding fire services in an emergency. Not a good look at all and surely walking a few extra steps won’t do you any harm.

THUMBS DOWN to people who turn right out of North Orange McDonalds and drive on the wrong side of the road, just because they’re too lazy to go around the block.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to the lovely lady who found my wallet and handed it in at the police station on Wednesday, April 19. I am truly grateful for your kind actions. May good things come your way.

THUMBS UP and thank you to the young crew who were working at KFC on Thursday, May 4. Even though you were obviously very busy, the service was friendly and efficient. Well done all!

THUMBS UP to Kate Jones @ One Nineteen. The staff is always friendly and efficient and able to take a joke. Food and coffee are good too!

A New Creation

Many things in life never stay the same. The old disappears to be replaced by the new – fashions, leaders, cars and whatever else we want to add. The Bible tells us that even the heavens will ‘vanish like smoke’ and the earth will ‘wear out like a garment’ (Isaiah 51:6) and God will ‘roll them up like a robe’ (Hebrews 1:12).

God made a beautiful world - in the beginning - but it has been marred by the effects of sin. Now it is waiting to be restored and liberated and one day there will be a new Heaven and Earth, which I am looking forward to.

The Bible also says that people can become a new creation when they invite Christ into their lives (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is possible because of His death and resurrection and because God is unchanging and His faithfulness is unwavering and His salvation lasts forever. We can be thankful that God is Sovereign over the universe and when He does bring in a new heaven and earth, it will no longer be crippled by all that is vile. It will be a place where God’s people will delight in all His goodness.

THUMBS UP to our local Foodcare. They have great customer service, and they’re very friendly to their customers as well. Plus, you walk in and out. Well done Foodcare Orange.
