Making the most of the last ocial weekend of the summer, my family and I spent an enjoyable Sunday afternoon on the water; shing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. While on a paddle board, I was reminded of a young adventurer by the name of Tom Dunn.

I met Tom ve years ago while he was travelling the length of Australia’s longest river system — 3,750 kilometres along the Condamine, Darling, and Murray Rivers — on a stand-up paddleboard!

As you are reading this, Tom is in the middle of another remarkable adventure, one he had planned to undertake in 2020, but was forced to abandon when COVID shut state borders.

MENTAL, as he is calling it, is a 9,000-kilometre triathlon from Steep Point, WA, to Byron Bay. That works out to be a 6,700-kilometre cycle leg across three states, a 300-kilometre swimming leg down the Murray River, and then a 2,0000-kilometre run up the coast!

Tom is an amazingly positive young guy and he’s doing it all to raise $100,000 for the mental health organisation LIVIN and promote positive conversations around mental health. If you want to support Tom, follow him on his journey, or read about his other adventures, visit whattomhasdunn.com

The 100th Anniversary of the Orange hospital cafe is coming up this month and they are planning a special afternoon tea celebration on Sunday, March 12 at the Orange City Bowling Club. Over its history, this remarkable group of volunteers has raised more than $6.6 million for the hospital! Past and present volunteers who would like to join the centenary celebration are invited to call Christine Hannus on 0488 038 801.

As I write this it is the last day of February, so next week we will be able to let you know who of those nominated for our ‘Volunteer of the month’ segment will receive a $100 grocery voucher from Ashcroft’s IGA.

Until next week!

New heritage signage celebrates 100-year history of local power grid

“Though there was only a moderate attendance at the Town Hall corner on Monday afternoon, where the first tension pole was erected in connection with the proposed installation of electricity, the proceedings were none the less enthusiastic.”

So reported the Orange Leader in January 1923, and the same could be said of the ceremony held at the very same location on Friday, February 24 to mark 100 years since Orange’s first power pole was first erected.

Outside the old Town Hall at the corner of Byng and Anson Street on Friday, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerald Power, and the CEO of Essential Energy, John Cleland, unveiled a new heritage sign at the site of the first pole, which remarkably is still standing a century on.

“It’s always important to remember our history and the milestones that brought us to where we are today,” Cr Power said at Friday’s ceremony, attended by past and present electrical workers, council sta and members of the Orange and District Historical Society.

“We’ve come a long way since the days of the late 1800s when Orange’s city streets were illuminated by eighty gas-powered street lights,” he continued.

“In the early days, lamplighters would travel around 29 kilometres on horseback every evening to ignite the lamps, returning at

midnight to extinguish them.”

When the first pole went into the ground in Orange, there was no nationwide electricity grid, so the Council had to build its own electricity generation system and the local network of poles and wires, costing almost £39,000 or $3.6 million today.

The brick and iron powerhouse was located on the northeastern corner of Byng and Peisley streets and was built to cater to Orange’s population of 8,000, with provisions for the eventual supply to 40,000 people.

The timber power poles were sourced from the NSW north coast, and in January 1923 the Leader prophetically reported that: “The light poles are being laid in position, and, judging by their solidity, will last for a lifetime.”

CEO of Essential Energy, John Cleland said the pole is a valuable piece of local history and has stood witness to the remarkable journey the energy sector has been on over the last 100 years.

“When this pole was stood, as Gerald mentioned, all the electrons that it was involved with, that it helped distribute were

locally generated. In the decades since, the pole has seen all generation move away from Orange… to centrally located large-scale coalfired and gas generation,” Mr Cleland said.

“Of course what we see now is a return to the past, back to the future if you like, where we are seeing a return to a higher level of local generation,” he continued, referencing the Flyers Creek Wind Farm, which is nearing completion, and the ever-increasing amount of rooftop solar in Orange and across the country.

“We stand beneath and beside this pole today and it is a wonderful witness to the amazing journey the electricity sector has been on over the last hundred years and of course, the change we’ll see in the next two, five, 10, 15 years will be extraordinary in terms of that return to a much higher proportion of local generation and of course the emergence of a much higher portion of renewable and low carbon generation.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony on Friday, a photograph of the pole and the gathering surrounding it was taken, a recreation of a photograph taken in 1923.

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT BRINGS CHAMBER MUSIC TO CIVIC SQUARE

Cultured is a celebration of Orange’s love for the arts, says Orange Chamber Music Festival Director, Carmen Nieves, of the free community music, arts and heritage event happening in the Civic Square on Saturday, March 11.

First introduced at the Orange Chamber Music Festival in 2021, Cultured is a free family-friendly event that combines art, music, culture and heritage while making classical music accessible to people of all ages. The allday music program planned for March 11 will see local and visiting musicians and ensembles perform in spaces around the Orange Civic Square, starting off with the farmer’s markets in the North Court.

“Starting at 9am in the morning the NSW Police Brass band and then they will have a second ensemble called the NSW Police

Band Dixieland ensemble,” Carmen said.

Then the music moves to the library at 11am for a ‘Cushion Concert’ aimed to appeal to children and the young at heart.

The free performances then continue inside the museum and gallery, respectively.

“They will be playing in the space standing up, it’s not a sit-down concert,” Carmen said of the museum performance, which will feature Eliza Shephard (flutes) and Alicia Crossley (recorders).

“So we encourage people to come into the space and follow the musicians and move around the exhibition,” she said.

Orange’s own talented violinist Rachael Kwa will be performing in the gallery theatre, joined by German concert percussionist Elman Mecid.

The final performance of the day will be a musical-theatrical interactive performance of Camille Saint-Saens’ humorous musical suite Carnival of the Animals. The performance will see the Orange Regional Conservatorium chamber music academy partnered with local theatre company The Pinnacle Players, who will add narration and impersonations.

enjoy together, Carmen said.

“It’s going to be an open-air orchestral/ theatre performance, outside in the South Court and we’re hoping to have a lot of families coming and sitting on the stairs and kids will be able to run around,” she said.

“It is a joy to be able to provide the community with diverse free performances, with something for the whole family.”

Cultured is part of the four-day Orange Chamber Music Festival, March 9 to 12, supported by Orange City Council, Create NSW and the Orange Regional Arts Foundation. For more information and times visit ocmf.com.au

“Music… should be the right of all children to develop beautiful hearts and minds.”

PRINCIPALS GO BACK TO SCHOOL FOR MUSIC EDUCATION WORKSHOP

Local school principals were given a hands-on lesson on the value of musical education last week, with Orange Regional Conservatorium sta leading them through a morning of moving, drumming, singing, and music-making.

Presenting at a professional learning session for local school leaders, Director of the Orange Regional Conservatorium, Donna Riles and the Con’s music education specialist, Philippa Waters had the district’s school principals banging on djembe drums, blowing kazoos and tapping xylophones and tambourines as they demonstrated a variety of musical activities showing how accessible a curriculum music program can be for classroom teachers.

“After the interruptions that Covid delivered school music programs, it is encouraging to see that our principals are committed to delivering high-quality extra-curricular and syllabus music programs within Orange schools,” Donna said. Research in neuroscience has shown music can improve children’s executive brain functioning by seven IQ points, she said.

“And we know first-hand that music instruction from a young age leads to happier, healthier, smarter adults,” Donna said.

“Music education helps brain development, assists focus, builds confidence, allows self-expression, relieves stress... and is fun!”

The Conservatorium works closely with district schools to deliver high-quality individual and group music tuition, band and choir programs and professional development workshops for classroom teachers.

And it’s a relationship they want to see grow in the future, Phillipa said.

“We sincerely thank all our principals for diving wholeheartedly into exploring the metacognitive, therapeutic and magical value of music education in a child’s life,” she said. “Here’s hoping all our school leaders across Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne and Orange make specialised classroom music, instrumental tuition and co-curricular ensembles a priority in every school.”

“Music should not be a rich man’s subject,” added Donna, “it should be the right of all children to develop beautiful hearts and minds.”

“Because of our association with the NSW Police a lot of people believe we’re funded by the government, which just isn’t true,” Orange PCYC Club Manager, Jaime Wenban, said.

The club is a not-for-profit organisation that covers its cost largely thanks to generous donations from the public as well as money raised through their club programs such as gymnastics, gym and fitness and music, she said.

The PCYC StarJump Challenge is not an important fundraiser for the club, but a great way to get kids active, Jaime said.

“Our mission at the PCYC is to get kids active in life, so the StarJump challenge really aligns with that!”

A popular number of star jumps for the challenge is 3,000 which is 100 each day, but whatever the amount the most important thing is just to commit and get involved.

There is no minimum amount required for a donation, and they are tax deductible.

“We want people to get involved as much as they can — even if all you can give is a five-dollar donation – we’re happy with that,” Jaime said.

The Train Journey

At 9 years of age, I was filled with excitement and a little trepidation.

Mum was fussing around and had given me buckets of instructions. I had my ticket and a tenshilling note attached to my shirt pocket with a safety pin, my small port and a big packet of sandwiches. With an “All Aboard” and a whistle we were o . The sandwiches were beaut and lasted all the way to Parramatta. When we were somewhere along the line, I think it was Muswellbrook, we were shunted about with a lot of clanging noises as the North West Mail was being assembled and new passengers joined me. A lady and two young girls about my age were now in my carriage. As we took o I started to worry — before then I had been facing the engine and now I had my back to the engine I thought, “I’m going back to Central with no one to meet me.” The lady asked me my destination and when I told her she said,

“that’s where we are going, if you like you can come along with us if you wish.” She reminded me of Mum, all e ciency. That was the good part, but the prospects of spending an afternoon with two young girls — YUK. However, I could not have been more wrong. They were country kids like me and we got along famously.

The afternoon was spent learning the ‘Cat’s Cradle’, playing ‘Simon Says’ and ‘Eye Spy’. Their Mum dug out a packet of Happy Family cards and they asked her for a pair of knitting needles and a ball of wool and they taught me how to knit. I kept that enjoyable afternoon to myself. If my mates found out I’d been singing songs, playing cat’s cradle and learning to knit — what a terrible loss of face. The afternoon went by in a flash and before we realised it we were at our destination.

The next week went by in a blur for me, it was all go and excitement. Uncle had had a couple of good years and had bought a tractor; prior to that, all farming was done

with horses. Aunt arriving with smoko, a massive teapot covered with a tartan tea cosy and a big basket of scones, jam and cream. The evening meal had seven of us at the table: Uncle, Aunt, two station hands, and Aunt’s helper, a neighbour’s daughter who had recently left school. She was a gem, full of get-up-and-go and lots of fun. Aunt insisted on formality and that no one should go hungry. The meal consisted of soup, baked dinner and a big pudding — that is where my “saw tooth locust” appetite came in handy. After the meal we “men” retired to the verandah to comfortable squatters chairs, my next memory being Aunt waking me up with a “time to go to bed, Ned”.

Some wonderful memories still remain: the slapping noise of the big leather belt driving the cha cutter, sitting on a big horse-drawn wagon loaded with seed grain and fertiliser, loading down into the drill, the smell of furniture polish and mothballs in the house.

On my return journey, I travelled with Uncle

who was going to Sydney on business. The first part of the trip was on a goods train with two carriages attached to the rear. We shared the compartment with a Fettler who was going on holidays. After a while, the train pulled o to let a mail train through and our companion asked us if we would like a cuppa. He went to the engine driver and came back with a big black billy of water. Rummaging through his gear and coming up with an immerser, cord and socket he proceeded to remove a light bulb in the carriage and inserted the socket. Within a short time we had a big mug of strong black tea. We gave him top marks for his ingenuity. I was told by my old mate Tiger that if you go west the walk-about-come-back spirit will get you. He was dead right! Once you go west you always want to go back.

Regards Ned

Make a home that’s truly your own with The Interior Collective

An Orange local with 12 years of experience as a designer, Bec launched her new interior design business, The Interior Collective in December last year, opening two showrooms in Endsleigh Avenue and Lords Place.

The Interior Collective Team can help you with all aspects of interior design from concept through to delivery, whether it be space planning for a new build or renovation, lighting design, window furnishings, bespoke cabinetry, colour consults, custom furniture or soft furnishings.

“For example, window coverings are an especially big part of our work in Orange due to the weather, and we do everything from start to finish; from coming in for a consult, choosing your fabric, what the right

configuration is for your windows, doing the on-site measure, and then the installation, even motorisation.”

At The Interior Collective, Bec makes a point of keeping things local, using local trades and suppliers where possible, but with a strong focus on promoting Australian-made products.

“Our custom lounges and chair, we have Molmic, which is a gorgeous Australian brand. We have our own bed head range, so you can choose your fabric, shape and it can be whatever size you like. And for soft furnishings, cushions, we do that all within the company,” she said.

Upholstery is another area where The Interior Collective can help streamline the process for you. Simply choose the fabric and they can handle the rest, Bec said.

“We’ll get the fabric delivered to a local

upholsterer and he will come pick up the item and drop it back o — it’s the full service,” Bec said.

It is not only those perfect finishing touches that Bec can help you with. If you are building a new home or renovating, seeking the advice of an interior can save you from making costly mistakes.

“Having an interior designer look at a floor plan, as opposed to a builder or an architect, we look at very di erent things,” she said.

“We look at how to furnish it and furniture placement, where window coverings are going to sit and things like that.”

Your concept floor plan might include a wall of glass, Bec said as an example, but if you plan to hang curtains that also needs to be taken into consideration.

“A portion of that glass is going to be

redundant because of where the curtain stacks to, so we can save you money, by pulling the window back smaller to allow for a curtain,” she explained.

And when renovating familiar spaces, it can be very beneficial to have a fresh set of eyes look over your plans.

“A lot of the time, my client will say, ‘I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of that!’ When you’ve lived in a home for so long, you become very emotionally connected or attached and you aren’t able to see it in a di erent layout,” Bec said.

Ultimately, Bec can help ensure that the end result is a space that looks great and truly works for your lifestyle.

“We can help you with anything from as little as choosing a paint colour, right through to drawing your house floor plan and footprint, furnish it, style it — the whole works.”

Newcrest to trial advanced 4G and 5G mobile at Cadia for safer, smarter and more sustainable mines

Newcrest will trial advanced 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5G mobile technologies underground at Cadia to assess the potential of cellular delivery of data and video to support a smarter, safer and more sustainable mine.

In partnership with Ericsson and Telstra Purple, Newcrest will deploy a private 4G LTE and 5G trial network in its underground operations at Cadia in coming months. This announcement follows

previous engagements where the trio worked to improve communications coverage, performance and safety with private 4G LTE at its Lihir mine in Papua New Guinea, and more recently for surface operations at Cadia.

Speaking at the Sweden-Australia Sustainable Mining Summit in Sydney recently, Cadia’s General Manager Aaron Brannigan said modern mining is a data-driven business, with technology and digitalisation creating new levels of productivity and safety, greater e ciency and reduced environmental impact.

“In the ongoing quest for productivity,

Who loves a pat with their pet? Cats and dogs love a cuddle with their humans – a belly rub or a good scratch behind the ears will make your pet’s day!

But what happens if you suddenly find a lump or bump on your pet’s skin?

Discovering a lump on your pet can be scary - is it something to worry about? Only a few lumps are reason for serious concern, but it is important to get them checked promptly for a diagnosis and to prevent your pet any discomfort. Our experienced vets have seen countless lumps and bumps over the years, so will assess the size, shape and appearance of a lump and where it is located, before deciding if further testing is necessary.

Many lumps are harmless fatty tumours – pets can develop these as they age. A lump on your pet could be an abscess, a parasite, infection, an allergic reaction or a foreign body like a grass seed stuck in the skin. Cats can develop abscesses which appear as a painful lump under the fur – these might start after a scratch or bite from another cat, but can be hard to find since cats are good at hiding pain. A very small number of lumps in cats or dogs might be malignant.

This month at Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital, your pet

e ciency and safety, Newcrest must use every tool at our disposal to boost performance at site while continuing to ensure that everyone at our mines gets home safely at the end of the day,” Mr Brannigan said.

“With 4G and 5G mobile technologies potentially o ering better performance and capabilities than Wi-Fi, this trial will help Newcrest to assess its viability for greater coverage, capacity and functionality to support advanced underground automation, our Connected Worker strategy and future growth at Cadia.

“It’s an exciting time for Newcrest and for Australian mining, and this is a great practical example of how Australia’s biggest industry can leverage Australia’s position as a global 5G leader to further drive digitalisation in the mining sector and help develop a smart, safer and more sustainable mine.”

Is Heartworm in Orange? Yes! Your dog needs protection from this nasty parasite. Heartworm is passed on by the bite of an infected mosquito. Tiny larvae are injected into your dog’s skin and can grow into adult worms in the heart and lungs. It used to be found only in warmer parts of Australia, but new research has shown Heartworm is now in every state and in the Central West too. The parasite has been found in dogs and in foxes locally – just one bite from an infected mosquito puts your dog, in Orange, in danger.

Dogs can be protected from Heartworm by a convenient annual injection or by chews, tablets or “spot on” treatments. But its dangerous to start your dog on Heartworm protection without testing him or her for the parasite first. This month your dog’s heartworm test (worth over $100) is FREE when he or she starts on annual Heartworm protection injections. Research shows many Heartworm cases in dogs happen when their owner forgets to give a monthly treatment, so this wonderful offer gives your dog protection throughout the year. We will send you convenient reminders when it’s time for vaccinations, flea or worm treatments – we are here to help!

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent I CAN HELP

I check the time again, puzzling over the fact that our mornings have simultaneously gotten better and worse this year.

It’s week six and Miss Eight has only thrown two tantrums so far this term. She has seemingly resigned herself to the fact that brushing her teeth and eating breakfast are daily morning occurrences. But, this year Miss 14 has been leaving early to walk to school with friends. While the emotional toll of this is HUGE (that she prefers the company of her friends over me… which is all I’ve ever wanted for her… but maaaaaaaaaaaan it hurts!) not having her home to help wrangle the world’s most distractible child is hard too.

I glance over at Miss Eight, who is putting on a pair of pyjama pants under her school uniform because she needs additional pockets for her fidget toy collection. I explain, careful not to use my nagging tone, that I have things to do this morning and we really need to get out the door on time today.

“Oh Mum, I can help. I’m good at multitasking,” she says, a shocking claim from the child who struggles to complete even three simple tasks per morning in the space of two-and-a-half hours.

“Like, if you’re in the library and you need to read a book while doing your work, you can just kick it up,” she continues, demonstrating this by holding onto the edge of the dining table and heel-kicking my new Sally Hepworth up behind her, losing my favourite bookmark and my spot forever.

“...type your words on your computer..” She is now hammering at the edge of the table with fingertips that I suddenly notice are covered in multi-coloured nail stickers.

“...and then, when your book lands, you read a bit more until you need to type again and you kick it again,” she finishes the explanation, like this is the most obvious solution for time-poor people.

I’m torn. I want to get her out the door as quickly as possible, but worrying about seeing the school librarian at pick-up time, I ask just how many books she has kicked around in the library.

“Well, none.” I relax.

“So far, but library day is Thursday, I think, so… yes, I’ll try it then,” she says, drifting into deep thought with a worrying smile on her face.

“So, what else are you struggling with, Mum?”

The two immediate responses that come to mind are “life” and “getting out the door on time with an eight-yearold!” But I refrain and instead settle on something I know is in her wheelhouse.

“I need your advice on how to pitch an idea.”

Miss Eight looks at me blankly.

“That means I need to talk someone into saying ‘yes’ to my idea.”

Her eyes light up and I figure that I have to spend about six minutes pretending to listen to her advice before we leave.

“I’ll help on one condition, Mum; that we can have ice blocks for afternoon tea.” I agree, keen to get this over with.

“And done!” she declares.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I wanted an ice block, you were distracted, so you didn’t even notice that I talked you into saying ‘yes’ to MY idea. See, that’s how you do it,” she explains. “There’s only one pineapple left and I call dibs! You can have lime.”

I drive to school in stunned silence, while Miss Eight sings “If you’re happy and you know it” in the back seat in between enthusiastic self-congratulation. Back home, I rewrite my proposal with the focus now on how and why it will benefit them, slipping in an amended quote for a higher amount. It’s approved in 20 minutes.

Miss Eight is worth her weight in gold!

What is the most important lesson you’ve learnt in life?

Patience. Patience for myself.

What’s the secret to a long and happy marriage?

Ride – Richelle Savaro

This is my ‘33 Willys Coupe. It’s got a 302 Windsor motor. My Dad had it before I got it and it’s been in the family for over 20 years. He left it sitting in the shed for 16 years though, because he wanted to play with other ones, so I bought it o him and did it back up again. which took 18 months. I put the original motor back in it and got it up and running.

I’ve had this car for five years now and my family owns some too. We turn them into hot-rods. We don’t keep them original. So, we give them chops — lower them down, give them bigger tyres and bigger motors — everything like that.

RURAL

MATTERS Improve your health with physical activity

HEALTH

lives have become more sedentary. In Australia, 55% of adults and 70% of children aged 2 to 17 do not meet the physical activity guidelines. Engaging in regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health and wellbeing.

Benefits of physical activity

Regular physical activity has so many benefits on your physical, emotional, and mental health. It can reduce your risk of developing diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. In addition to disease prevention, regular physical activity can help you manage weight better; lower blood pressure; strengthen bones, muscles, and joints; increase energy levels; improve sleep quality and quantity; and help improve your mood and mental health.

How much exercise should I do?

For the best health benefits, adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity most days, preferably every day of the week. There are

several ways you can measure your activity intensity but one of the easiest is by using the talk test, if you can comfortably talk, but cannot sing, your activity is of moderate intensity.

How do I get started?

Small changes can have a big impact. Look for ways to integrate more physical activity into your daily life such as walking/cycling to work, walking kids to school, parking further away from your destination and walking the rest, incorporate exercise into your lunch break or try walking meetings.

If you’re keen to improve your fitness, it’s a good idea to start slowly and gradually increase your duration and intensity over time, this will help reduce the risk of injury.

Tips for staying motivated

Finding ways to enjoy physical activity is key to keeping motivated in the long term. Some tips for getting and staying motivated include:

•Choosing activities you enjoy,

•Exercising with a friend,

•Scheduling exercise into your diary or calendar,

• Trying multiple shorter sessions throughout the day, and

•Journaling your activity to help keep yourself accountable

If you have any concerns or questions about your health and physical activity, reach out to your GP, local physiotherapist, or exercise physiologist.

FEDERAL FUNDING GETS THE ORANGE MILE UP AND RUNNING

We’ve all heard of Roger Bannister - the first person in history to clock a sub-four minute mile. The second person ever was an Aussie - John Landy.

Almost 70 years later, runners will have a chance to crack the four-minute mile in the heart of Orange, and have their name printed in the Orange Running Festival record books for the new 1.6km course.

Elite middle-distance racers, running enthusiasts, athletic families and energetic kids will stride through Gosling Creek Reserve this Saturday, contesting the city’s Orange Mile.

The Orange Mile is jointly funded by Orange City Council and the previous Australian Government ($35,000) under the Building Better Regions Fund. This event will attract both local runners and racers from across the country, keen on lacing up in the colour city.

I’m looking forward to being part of the festivities.

Signup doesn’t close until 4pm Friday 3rd March so hurry up and join in!

OUR REGION’S RECOVERY NEEDS SUPPORT

The NSW and Australian Governments need to speed up delivery of vital disaster relief for the storm and flood-hit communities of the Cabonne Shire.

There are a number of programs available to flood devastated areas such as the Northern Rivers that have not been put in place for our own flood devastated communities.

Home Buy-Back Scheme

The NSW Government has just started the first round of voluntary home buy-backs for the floodhit communities of the NSW Northern Rivers.

The $700-million Resilient Homes Program is designed to enable around 2,000 buy-backs for the purchase of a homeowner’s house and land.

We have many homeowners in places like Eugowra, Molong and Canowindra who’d be very keen to participate in the scheme, but they can’t get answers about what’s going on.

Local Government Recovery Grants

Co-funded by the Australian and NSW Governments, grants of up to $2 million have been announced for the Northern Rivers region, but not for Cabonne. Our councils can’t get through the recovery without help. Why isn’t this support being made available here?

Community Assets Program

In mid-January, the Federal and NSW Governments announced the $70 million Community Assets Program. Under the program, local councils in flood-hit areas can apply for grants of up to $7.5 million to go towards the repair of flood-

damaged community infrastructure like parks, playgrounds, walkways, and libraries. This program should be made available to Cabonne. Why isn’t it?

State Rail Infrastructure Causing Flooding

The communities of Cabonne are also looking to the NSW Government to fix the state-owned infrastructure that is a major contributor to local flood events.

In Molong, the rail bridge over Molong Creek is causing water to back up. It needs to be raised or moved. There is also flood mitigation work along the creek which needs to be prioritised. Local residents have started a petition, but it shouldn’t have to come to that to get action. This issue is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

In Canowindra, the old rail line and rail bridge at the back of Gaskill Street is causing water to back up into town. It’s owned by the NSW Government. You could fix the problem in two hours with a couple of bulldozers but so far there’s been no action.

The smaller communities of the region are tired of picking up the pieces from these flood events when there are practical solutions that could be implemented now. We simply can’t go on like this. People’s lives are in limbo. They are hearing about these programs which are offering hope, and then they can’t get any clarity as to whether the programs will be rolled out in the Central West. We certainly don’t begrudge the Northern Rivers in having access to these programs – they have also experienced immense devastation. They need all the help they can get, but with Cabonne bearing the same level of destruction, we just want what’s fair - the same access to these programs.

It’s a long road to recovery for businesses like Molong Newsagency

RECOVERY IN CUDAL

Last week I stopped by Cudal Bowling Club to catch up with Amber, Greg, Kitty, and Daz to talk about the recovery and how Cudal has been travelling.

The rebuild and recovery is proving a long and difficult one in Cudal, as it is all over the Cabonne Shire.

I was in Cudal on the Monday after the storm and flood hit and I was amazed at how the community rallied together to get through those traumatic hours of chaos. Cudal has a mighty big heart.

The Cudal community can be very proud of what it achieved and the lives that were undoubtedly saved. It’s been an extraordinary effort that continues to this day.

Thank you to everyone who has played a role in getting Cudal through this difficult period. There’s still a lot of work to do but together, progress is being made.

TELSTRA CONNECTED COMMUNITIES GRANT PROGRAM

Telstra has announced the Connected Communities Grant Program, supporting Australia’s remote, rural, and regional communities with $600,000 to foster inclusion and resilience over the next three years.

In partnership with the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal, grants of up to $10,000 are available to not-for-profits to help them build resilient, sustainable, and liveable communities. If you know of a community group or not-for-profit organisation that could use a hand – the Connected Communities Grant Program might be for them!

The program has three themes:

• Resilient communities that are well prepared and socially connected, with the ability to renew and recover together when disaster strikes;

• Sustainable communities that are diverse and inclusive, through planning for the health, wellbeing and prosperity of their people and planet;

• Liveable communities that have digital capability, helping to equip people with the skills to live, learn and work in a digital society.

Funds will be available for new or existing not-for-profit programs to help them scale their impact to help more Australians in rural and regional areas become better connected.

Applications for the 2023 Telstra Connected Communities grant round will open at 9am on Wednesday 1st of March 2023 and will close at 5pm on Thursday 30th of March 2023. This first round will make $200,000 available for applications of up to $10,000 each. Successful grants will be announced in June 2023 and successful applicants will have 12 months to complete funded projects.

For more details, visit https://frrr.org.au/funding/place/telstra-connected-communities-program/ There is also a webinar for grantseekers on Monday 6 March from 12pm. To attend, visit https://events.humanitix.com/telstra-connected-communities-grantsprogram-2023-workshop.

HOT 4LOOR LINEUP

HITTING THE VIC STAGE THIS SATURDAY, MARCH 4

4 on the 4loor returns to the Victoria Hotel this Saturday, March 4, with a hot lineup that has a little something for everyone.

Orange’s monthly music showcase has been giving stage time to bands and artists of all genres since 1998 with a heavy emphasis on original music.

Every 4loor line-up is a musical smorgasbord, with everything from solo electronic artists to no-holds-barred heavy metal.

This Saturday, up-and-coming Sydney outfit Avalanche are bringing classic Aussie pub rock to the Vic.

The band is named after bassist and lead singer Steven Campbell’s father’s own band, the legendary 70s pub rock band Avalanche fronted by Adrian Campbell. Their brand new single, ‘Sweet Baby Brown Eyes’ is a cover of the cult Aussie rock classic recorded by Adrian Campbell back in the 70s. Not just a blistering no-holds-barred musical experience, the track is a fusion of contemporary rock power with rock history and lineage.

Alongside Avalanche on the March lineup are Bathurst singer/songwriter Harriet Fahey, new young Orange band Sporadic Bin Rats, and the smooth soundscapes of local electronic artist Implexive.

Catch 4 on the 4loor at the Victoria Hotel this Saturday, March 4 from 8.30pm til late!

HOME COOKING with RUBEN LOPEZ

My grandmother’s pisto:

Summer vegetables are the queens of the supermarket at the moment, check out the prices, they are the cheapest you’ll see for the whole year. In fact, if you have a veggie garden here in Orange NSW, you’ll have realised that your tomatoes, zucchinis, and capsicums are ready to pick.

That is why I always recommend you to buy and cook products that are in season and local. Not just because the flavours will be the best, but because it will be more economical for the family.

Today’s recipe is perhaps the most important recipe in my family: ‘pisto manchego’. A Spanish version of the French ratatouille, based on the traditional gastronomy and zero-waste food approach that I always talk about.

My grandmother, Emilia, taught me how to make this really easy and super versatile veggie stew that you’ll be able to use as a side dish, on toast with some eggs, in pastas, on pizzas as a topping, etc... you name it!

It is basically a vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free recipe that will WOW your family either cold or hot. The options are endless with this recipe, but today I’m going to share with you the easiest version of all. And it’s made using just two ingredients that are in season right now: tomatoes and capsicums.

If you google it, you’ll see dozens of very similar recipes around Spain and in other Mediterranean countries. In Catalonia, they

called it ‘samfaina’, in Mallorca ‘tombet’. All of them vary, adding eggplant or zucchini to it, but at the end of the day you’ll see that it’s absolutely the same concept. A vegetarian stew full of an excess of local veggies!

In La Mancha, where my family is from, I remember a time when one of my relatives came with bags and bags of tomatoes and capsicums from the farm. That was the moment to get creative in order to avoid any waste: some capsicums were hung to be sundried, some tomatoes were blended and put it in the freezer for future elaborations, of course we spent days eating delicious rustic tomato salads for lunch or dinner, and then, the hero of my family recipes: ‘Pisto’.

It didn’t matter when you arrived at my grandmother’s kitchen, there was always a jar of this delicious stew in the fridge. I’d cut a bit of rustic bread, add a piece of manchego cheese with a few spoons of pisto and at that moment I’d know I was eating at the best place in the world, my grandma’s!

This was the first recipe I learnt from her and I really hope you guys use it for all your excess tomatoes. Good luck!

INGREDIENTS:

- 1 kg capsicums, cut into strips and without seeds.

- 2 kg of tomatoes: 1 kg crushed and the other one into cubes.

- 125 ml of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

- 2 tablespoons of salt

- 2 tablespoons of sugar

- Black pepper (optional)

METHOD:

1. Wash and clean the capsicums, cut them into thin rings and remove the seeds.

2. Wash the tomatoes. Cut one kilogram into cubes. And with the help of a hand blender, crush the other kilogram until you get a sauce.

3. In a deep pot, heat the oil. When it is hot, add the peppers and fry over low heat, turning them with a wooden spoon so that they do not stick.

4. Add the tomatoes and bring them to a boil. Lower the heat, simmer and begin to reduce.

5. Season with salt, sugar and pepper (optional)

6. Reduce to desired consistency.

7. Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking

8. Empty into a bowl or container and put in the fridge to let it cool down.

9. When completely cold, cover it and leave in the fridge.

Note: Use it in the following two or three days. Serve it cold with a couple of olive oil-fried eggs and a piece of bread. If you make a big batch, divide into containers and freeze it. Enjoy!

For

nights and counting:

Ronald McDonald House Charities is on the lookout for CEOs, managers, board members and other business leaders to sign up for an immersive look at just what it takes to support families in their time of need.

Since Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Central West opened they have been able to provide 1,168 families with children receiving specialist or life-saving treatment in Orange Hospital with a total of 9,385 nights of free accommodation.

As well as free accommodation, they provide emergency meals for families, grocery items for self-catering, complimentary breakfasts, in-room toiletries and a gift bag of new toys, activities and books for their sick child in hospital.

All this is done thanks to donations and the amazing work of local volunteers who have contributed more than 88,408 hours to the house as part of a 24/7, 365-day-a-year roster.

The “CEO Walk in My Shoes” experience on March 23 and 24 is a chance for business leaders to experience first-hand how Ronald McDonald House Charities supports families from across the central and far west.

First held in 2022, participants found the inaugural CEO Walk in My Shoes personally rewarding.

“It was an absolutely amazing experience,” Chairman of the Parkes Chamber of Commerce and Director of Langlands Hanlon, Geo Rice, said.

Mr Rice took part last year and has already put up his hand for the 2023 event.

“For me it was such an eye-opener. I had no idea the RMHC Central West ran with minimal funding and relied so heavily on volunteers supporting a small sta , so this is why fundraising through the CEO Walk in my Shoes is so important for rural families,” Mr Rice said.

The immersive experience sees the CEO participants cooking and serving dinner and breakfast for families staying at the house. They are also guided through real-life scenarios to get a better understanding of what families go through while their child is receiving treatment in hospital.

CEO Walk In My Shoes 2023 will provide a unique insight into what it takes to run RMHC Central West in Orange, executive o cer Rebecca Walsh said.

“Everyone involved last year gave us wonderful feedback about how the

experience gave them a grassroots understanding of not only what it takes to run the Orange house on a day-to-day basis, but the challenges faced by families who find themselves having to rush to Orange for emergency treatment for their baby, child or adolescent,” Ms Walsh said.

The 2022 event raised su cient funds for 190 nights of accommodation and RMHC Central West is hoping to top that figure in 2023

To register for CEO Walk in My Shoes please call Executive O cer Rebecca Walsh for more information on 6363 1960 or go to the CEO Walk in My Shoes website, and click on Ronald McDonald House Charities Central West to register.

The funds raised through this event will go to directly support families who have a child at Orange Hospital.

REAL ESTATE AGENT IN ORANGE

It was a long difficult road in an awful market with a few additional curve balls thrown in for good measure. However, Chris’s experience shone through. He knows the market in Orange and surrounding areas very well and understood what the property needed and what it would sell for and priced the property according. He organised trades people to fix what was needed and get the property looking great. His photography expertise provided a much-needed boost to enhance the property’s outlook. He communicated with us regularly providing updates on the property and the interest in it. With great perseverance he found the right buyer and achieved above the asking price. Chris sold the property to us originally and continued his great service in selling property for us. Thanks for everything Chris the property market in Orange is in good hands, all the best for the future.

EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

Chris and his associate Margaret were just fantastic, holding our hand throughout the sales process. Level headed advice and a sound market appraisal had the property sold much earlier than I expected plus going all out in keeping the property looking its best throughout the entire sales period. Very highly recommended!!!!

Verified by RateMyAgent

Margaret provided was very helpful in buying our new home. As our initial point of contact she was exceptionally responsive, providing documentation and advice almost immediately. Throughout the viewings she demonstrated her commitment to the vendors and the property. Every question we asked about the property, she knew the answer to. The next time we saw Margaret she had followed up with resourcing additional information for us. Margaret was helpful and knowledgeable and we would recommend working with her to any prospective vendors or buyers.

WORKED TIRELESSLY UNTIL THE DEAL WAS DONE!

Chris worked through the day and long past the normal work hours you would expect to secure the deal for us, negotiating back and forth between the vendors and ourselves until the deal was done. He was clear in what was expected from us and what the vendor wanted so there was no misunderstanding at any time. He responded to our many queries and replied with all documents asked of him. While he was acting on behalf of the vendors he looked after us as buyers as well. A pleasure to work with.

Robin Hood sells for record $51 million price tag

Orange’s Robin Hood Hotel has set a new record sale price for a regional NSW pub, with a local syndicate of investors paying $51 million for the large venue.

The syndicate, led by local publicans Tim Ireson and Ben Cochrane, paid more than two-and-a-half times the $19 paid by the Marlow Hotel Group in late 2020.

And it’s almost double the previous record

paid for a regional hotel, which was $27 million for Wagga Wagga’s Thomas Blamey Tavern.

In the last two years, the Robin Hood has undergone substantial renovations with a brand new bistro and indoor kids playground, new beer gardens and additional car parking to cater for the increased demand.

And sitting on 32,700 square metres,

the site has significant potential for future subdivision and mixed-use redevelopment.

“Regional centres such as Orange benefited greatly through the pandemic years, and continue to draw the attention of astute capital investors,” selling agent HTL Property Director, Blake Edwards said

The record sale of the Robin Hood Hotel takes the national total of pub sales so far in

2023 to over $515 million, according to HTL Property.

“With robust revenue attraction being enjoyed, the imminency of greater legislative clarity in the near future, and continued major lender body support; the asset class firmly exists as a first choice investment option for both corporate and private vehicles nationally,” concluded HTL Property Managing Director, Andrew Jolli e.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

The biggest fear that retirees are facing is that they’ll run out of money.

The risk is very real. People are living longer and longer and that means more money is needed to fund a long retirement.

I sometimes hear people saying they won’t live ‘that long’. But they might! Plan for a long retirement and if you don’t happen to live that long, you won’t be here to have to worry about it. Better safe than sorry.

Not running out of money comes down to two things: building up a solid nest egg before retirement and then making sure you live within your means during retirement. But how do you do these things?

It comes down to getting control over your money, knowing what the options are and planning ahead, so that you can make informed decisions.

When it comes to your retirement and your retirement savings, there is so much that is within your control. There are also plenty of things that aren’t, but if you focus on the things you can control and put strategies in place to get the most out of what you have, then you’ll be well placed to give yourself the best retirement possible.

For many people, retirement is daunting. For some, it’s easier to take a head-in-the-sand approach. Let’s put you in a position where

you are the one steering in the direction your retirement will take you.

If you want to learn some of the things you can do to put yourself in the driver’s seat when it comes to getting the most out of your retirement savings, then I’m holding a FREE ‘Retire in Style’ seminar on Monday 13th March at 6.30 pm at the Orange Ex-Services Club. Get the facts, be empowered, do the best for you and your family. Simply scan the QR code and book yourself a seat, or give me a call on 0411 484 464.

If you’ve read this far then I hope to see you there!

Our house is once again inundated with sickness. This time it isn’t the flu. It’s not COVID. It is the dreaded gastro bug. Once again it is time to grab the mops and baton down the hatches as we see out this next storm. It has not been pretty. To make it all the more di cult, it is our small children who have succumbed to this virus. As you can imagine, it means that the ability to try and contain the germs is somewhat more di cult. As parents we are both exhausted from the constant wiping down, wiping up and disinfecting. We sleep with one ear open, waiting for the dreaded cry of, “Mum, it’s happened again.” Thankfully, we are enjoying a bit of warmer weather, which means we can stay on top of the copious amounts of laundry. But if I am honest with myself, I would say that it is getting to us. We have found this year has been filled with many false starts and sicknesses. Each week there seems to be something else that we have to deal with. Or something else we have to go and see a doctor about. It can be hard in these moments to find perspective. It is certainly easy to complain, but what are we really complaining about? I know there are many others who are having to deal with a lot more and the journey to recovery, if there is one, is certainly more than a couple of days. So is there place to finding

perspective in what we’re going through? I am reminded of one of the words of Psalm 121:8 which says: ‘the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.’ The words of this Psalm are a constant reminder to me that no matter what, the Lord is watching over me. No matter how down, overwhelmed, sick or worried I feel, I know that I am not alone and the Lord is watching over me. It is a truth that is a reminder to me through every season of life. How is this possible? It is because of Jesus and what he has done is bringing me into his family by his death and resurrection. It is this perspective that keeps me and my family going through the crazy whirlwind of parenting. When we are on our hands and knees mopping up vomit or being woken up in the middle of the night, we know that the Lord is watching over us. And even if things don’t really get any easier, or if something worse comes along, we know that we are not facing this on our own. So, perhaps there are opportunities for you to think about who watches over you. Or spaces to wonder about questions like, who is the one who sustains me when I’ve got nothing left to give? Maybe there is an opportunity to explore this more deeply, and as you do there may be answers that you did not first expect.

What sort of leader should I be?

At work, I am “acting up” – that is, standing in for a while to be the leader. This made me think, how can I be a good leader? I reflect on the other leaders around me. I have been fortunate with bosses; they generally have cared for me and my colleagues. However, I have also seen bad leaders who use their position to do some change which makes them look good to get the next job – while causing great upheaval to those under them.

I also reflect on my leader – Jesus Christ. Jesus was a visionary. He led from the front bringing his followers with him. His most immediate followers were often scared and confused. So, he spent a lot of e ort patiently training and encouraging them. Jesus was well known for his compassion. Even at the end of a tiring day, when others would have called it quits – he kept going and cared for those in need. Jesus once said that he ‘came not to be served but to serve’. Jesus is a leader worth following.

So I am inspired to be like Jesus and my good bosses before me. I will try to be a visionary servant.

BIG THUMBS UP to Cameron the courier from Australia Post who delivers all our online orders. He has amazing people skills, a great sense of humour, is e cient and is just a great all-round person.

THUMBS UP to North Orange Butchers! I asked for a minute steak. They brought out a whole rump and took a 500g slice o it, but only charged me for a minute steak!

THUMBS UP to Factory Espresso for making my daughter’s birthday extra special with a very kind gesture.

THUMBS DOWN to the very rude taxi driver who picked me up from the bottom rank. Your behaviour was terrible, and you were very rude. We should be paying for a taxi ride, not an attitude.

THUMBS UP to Emily at BCF for her excellent customer service.

THUMBS DOWN to the lady in units that keeps poisoning people’s plants. We all know who you are.

THUMBS UP to Nicholas at O ceworks, for being an extremely helpful and bubbly person.

THUMBS UP to the workers at the cemetery for keeping the grounds so nice and clean.

A MASSIVE THUMBS DOWN to the two women who decided to steal my wallet and use my bank card to purchase alcohol and smokes instead of handing it in after I dropped it near Kmart. You’re on CCTV and it’s now with the police.

THUMBS UP to the new owners and new chef at the Lucknow Tavern. We had a beautiful meal there on Friday night. Well done!

THUMBS UP to the Good Enough Parent segment of Orange City Life –I love it!

THUMBS DOWN to the bike riders who knocked over an 86-year-old lady walking in Nelson Park. There was no one else in the park at the time and they never had the manners to make sure she got home, or to ring anyone.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to the person walking their dog in Wakeford Street who will not pick up their dog’s droppings.

THUMBS UP to all the young Basketball boys and girls who attended the huge Basketball weekend in Gri th. You may not have come home with glory, but you represented Orange with great pride and sportsmanship. And a great big thumbs up to the coaches and parents who supported them.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for not cleaning the rubbish out of the creek near Mitre 10. It’s no wonder they got flooded.

THUMBS UP to Ella from Orange Aquatic Centre. I love watching you interact with the kids during lessons. It’s obvious you love kids and your job.
