Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

It’s absolutely bucketing down rain and hail as I write this on Tuesday afternoon and more than one lightning bolt has had us jumping in our seats.

A bumper issue of Orange City Life in your hands today and once again our small team here has surprised even ourselves that we pulled all this together in time.

The annual Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival is in full swing and there’s a lot more to come including the National Bush Poetry Performance Championship, which gets underway at the Orange Ex Services’ Club today (Thursday, February 23).

It’s a chance to see 16 of the country’s best performance poets in action and well worth a look.

I stopped by the Ex-Services’ club last Friday where representatives from the club industry held a fundraising luncheon that raised $200,000 for victims of last year’s terrible floods. Things are slowly improving in Eugowra, but there is still so much to be done and many people are a long way from returning to their homes.

Congratulations to Amorette Zielinski, the recipient of the 2023 Orange Woman of the Year Award. Amorette is the founder and director of the online support network, Central West Mums and organiser of the annual Mumfest Central West conference and Central West Mummy Awards. You can read more on page 7. Until next week!

CLUB INDUSTRY FUNDRAISER MAKES $200,000 FOR CENTRAL WEST FLOOD VICTIMS

Members of the club industry came from around the state to the Orange Ex-Services’ Club on Friday for a fundraising lunch that raised $200,000 for victims of the devastating floods in 2022.

The Unite & Raise For the Central West Flood appeal luncheon was inspired by a similar event held in support of the 2020 bushfires.

“It’s our industry united together. so we have a mix of metro clubs, regional clubs, trade manufacturers, local vineyards, food supplies — everyone’s come together to try and raise as much money as we can for the central west NSW floods,” said Tarnequa Smart of Smart Exposure, organisers of the event.

“My Mum’s actually from Parkes, so for us, it was a bit close to home; it really touched us so we wanted to give back.

“We’re quite blessed in our industry, and it’s some way that we can try and make other people’s lives a bit better when

they’re going through the worst part of their life.”

The Unite and Raise event raised close to $200,000 through a mixture of live and silent auctions and generous donations.

Speaking at the event on Friday was ex-Eugowra local Andrew Barnes, who on seeing the devastating situation of his family and friends began telling their stories to the world.

“I’m a cameraman, I’ve worked in media for years, my wife’s a journalist, so I just could see how I could help in different ways and probably how other people could,” Andrew said.

“So I wrote stories about the people, about what happened, how they’d literally got away with their lives and kicked off a lot

of fundraising.”

Andrew is on a mission to raise half a million dollars for the Eugowra community and on Friday, he was joined on stage by long-time Eugowra local, Mavis Cross, as he appealed for people to open their wallets.

Mavis, who has lived in Eugowra for 65 years, is lucky to be alive today.

“It was scary,” Mavis said, recalling her terrifying ordeal. “I was hanging on to the back gate. it was up to my armpits in seconds… and I was screaming ‘help me’ and the neighbour came from the other corner and said, ‘I’ve got you Mavis’.”

Other neighbours came to Mavis’ aid and it took four men to fight the current and get her to safety.

“It comes back to me. I can hear the

noise, the water hitting the tin fences.. it just ripped them out of the ground! Unbelievable!”

At one point, a home that had been washed off its piers was floating towards Mavis and her rescuers and was only halted by a tree in its path.

Mavis is now back living in her home, but she is among the lucky ones in Eugowra.

“The town… there’s a lot to do and people’s homes, around me three or four are gone!” Mavis said.

But the support that continues to be shown to the Eugowra community is truly heartwarming, she said.

“It is amazing, I can’t believe it. people have been so generous and it comes from everywhere.”

Top-level bowls expected as Golden Eagle gets underway Tuesday

Orange City Bowling Club’s iconic Golden Eagle Classic Pairs tournament gets underway on Tuesday, February 28, with some of the best bowlers in the world today competing for a share in the $20,000 prize pool.

Now in its 53rd year, the 2023 Golden Eagle tournament has attracted one of the strongest fields of bowling talent in the

competition’s history, with world champions and national champions among the 84 competitors stepping onto the greens next week.

“We’ve got world champions, current Australian players, current internationals, plenty of players with state bowls experience from New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Victoria, ACT… so the field is red hot this year and whoever gets through and wins it, will have

Pro poets take to the stage as Banjo fest rolls on

It has already been a big week for lovers of bush poetry, but now it is time for the best poetry performers in the country to battle it out for bragging rights and the title of Australian Bush Poetry Champion.

The Banjo Paterson

Australian Poetry Festival rolls on after a packed weekend of events. There was a full house at Molong’s Freemasons Hotel on Saturday night for the Poetry Brawl, Organising Committee Chair and Rotary Club of Orange member, Len Banks, said.

And poetry lovers flocked in numbers to the Sunday brunch at Yeoval’s More than a Poet Museum and the afternoon tour at the historic home of Banjo’s grandparents, Boree Nyrang.

“There’s plenty of visitors in town,” Len said. “And I know there’s quite a few poets who’ve come for the whole week.

“So we’re really pleased to see people spending the week in Orange and enjoying,

not only the poetry, but the rest of the district and the getting out of the villages too.”

Kicking o Thursday morning, February 23 and finishing Friday afternoon, February 24, is one of the major highlights of the festival, the Australian Bush Poets Association’s National Championships. This highly entertaining and competitive event, held at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club sees poets recite poems in four categories: an original humorous, an original serious, a contemporary poem (post-1950), and a traditional (pre-1950) poem.

It’s a rare opportunity to see so many great poets perform at the one venue, Organising Committee Chair and Rotary Club of Orange member, Len Banks, said.

“There were at least four previous national champion poets out at Yeoval on Sunday

that I recognised and plenty of other entertainers,” Len said.

“So I think the standard will be high, and I encourage people to come along and watch. I think it’ll be a very good event.”

On Thursday night, February 23, The Lord Anson Hotel is hosting a fun competition where you can recite one of your favourite Banjo poems, or a spoof thereof.

Then on Friday, February 24, it’s time for the raconteurs to ‘hold court’ at the Metropolitan Hotel at the yarn spinning competition — a new addition to the festival. Stories have a five-minute time limit and can be on any topic, as long as it’s family-friendly.

On Saturday, February 25, Len said there has been a slight change to the program,

with both the Youth and Open Poetry Competitions being held in the morning at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.

The poetry then heads to Cargo Inn on Saturday night where poets can compete for the inaugural Cargo Cup and cash prizes.

There will be more bush poetry at Rotary’s community market day in the Northcourt on Sunday, February 26, and then the festival wraps up for another year with music and poetry at sunset on the deck at Strawhouse Wines.

“That will need booking, but bookings are filling up pretty quickly!” Len advised. For the full program of events, times, locations and ticket information visit: www.orange360.com.au

Community-building mum named Orange Local Woman of the Year

When Amorette Zielinski moved to Orange in 2013 with her husband, young son, and pregnant with her second child, she found it an isolating experience.

Seeing a need to connect and support other mothers like herself, Amorette created a Facebook group, Central West Mums, that has since grown into an important online resource for thousands of local mums, and a community where they can feel supported and connected.

“The communities of the Orange electorate are filled with many amazing women, who do so much for the benefit of their community,” said Member for Orange Philip Donato MP in Robertson Park on Tuesday, February 21, as he o cially presented Amorette with the 2023 Woman of the Year Award.

“It’s never an easy job in identifying just one amazing woman from literally hundreds of superwomen across the electorate, but this year one local stood out.

“Her goal was to strengthen community connection, and with thousands of local mums having organically joined and participated with one another on this

support network, it’s safe to say Ami has well and truly succeeded.”

From the online platform, Amorette has gone on to launch the popular in-person events, Mumfest Central West and the Central West Mummy Awards, Mr Donato said.

“Amorette’s online resource was a godsend for locals during the socially isolating restrictions during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, no doubt keeping many local mums sane in an otherwise anxious period,” he said.

“I congratulate Ami on her amazing achievement, and for the selfless and ongoing devotion in supporting hundreds of families across the communities of the Central West.”

Receiving the award, Amorette said she felt incredibly humbled and grateful to be surrounded by so many women who help make a positive impact on our community.

“I only hoped, really, that our community would be maybe 100 members or so, as I keep being reminded, and now

we have been able to bring several thousand together to feel supported and connected,” Amorette said.

“Mums are moving to the area and feeling very concerned and nervous

about asking how they can meet people and finding out that they’re absolutely inundated [with] this oozing of friendliness… to help them settle in and o er to meet with them.

“As a mum or a parent, carer, you know, you feel like you’ve got so many challenges to manage and juggle, and sometimes you just need to feel that you’ve got other people to bounce o , to talk to, to ask for their advice and we continue to do that on our online platform.”

Mr Donato said he would be accompanying Amorette to the NSW Women of the Year Awards event in Sydney on March 9.

Premie-born Eddie now running to help o ers like him

When he was born at just 34-weeks’ gestation, Eddie Bettinzoli could not even breathe for himself. But on March 5, the now fighting-fit 8-year-old is tackling the Orange Running Festival 5-kilometre race, all to raise money to help kids like him.

For parents Mark and Rach Bettinzoli, having what had been a normal pregnancy suddenly escalated to an emergency premature birth was a terrifying ordeal.

“Rach was in hospital, and I got a phone call that morning at 6:30 to rush to there,” Mark said, “and they immediately performed an emergency caesarean section at 34-weeks’ gestation where they found that Rach’s placenta had ruptured.”

As is typical with babies of this gestation, baby Eddie’s lungs were not fully developed so he was mechanically ventilated and airlifted from Orange to Liverpool Hospital where he received specialist care.

“Rach was not able to travel, so our new family was separated for the first couple of days which was tough,” Mark said.

“I was able to hold Eddie occasionally and I know it was hard for Rach to not be there.”

When Eddie was well enough, the Special Care Nursery team at Orange Base Hospital arranged for him to be brought back to

Orange where he met mum for the first time.

Eight years later, Eddie and his family are keen to make a di erence in the lives others in the same situation and will be lacing up their running shoes to fundraise for the charity Running for Premature Babies at the Orange Running Festival, March 4–5.

Eddie and Mark are taking on the 5-kilometre race, while Eddie’s sister Addison and Rach will be running the Community Mile. Mark will also be running in the half marathon.

Mark and Eddie’s e orts to raise funds for premature babies have touched the hearts of many in their community. They hope to inspire others to make a di erence and join them in helping raise funds for lifesaving neonatal equipment, giving premature babies born here in Orange a better chance of survival.

Running for Premature Babies Foundation was founded by Sophie Smith OAM in after she and her late husband Ash lost their

prematurely born triplets to complications following their birth in 2006. The charity has since raised over $5 million, providing over 100 pieces of life-saving neonatal equipment to hospitals in need all over Australia, and directly benefiting thousands of sick and premature babies.

“It gives me great comfort knowing that my little triplets’ legacy is helping give so many other babies a better chance of survival. I’m so grateful to Mark, Eddie, and their family and to the thousands of people who are lacing up their joggers to ensure we can continue to make a di erence to neonatal care in Australia,” Ms Smith said.

If you’d like to support Mark and Eddie on their running and fundraising journey for Running for Premature Babies, follow the link to his fundraising page: https://www. runningforprematurebabies.com/fundraisers/markbettinzoli

The real value of independent local knowledge

Graduating from the University of New England in 1992, Andrew has more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of town planning. He spent the first ten years of his career as a town planner with Orange City Council before moving into the private sector in 2001, where he was the director of a large local firm for more than a decade.

Founding Saunders Property in July 2022, Andrew brings his 30 years of experience, expertise and local knowledge to the new venture.

Whether it is a truly independent valuation you need or planning advice for developments big or small, Andrew can help you get the outcome you seek.

“Being independent is really important on the valuation side of things,” Andrew said.

“It might be a Family Law matter, or it

could be a Stamp Duty or Capital Gains matter and you might get three or four interested parties that have totally different views, but we’re independent, we read the data and make an interpretation based on market trends and market evidence.”

Andrew is a highly experienced valuer of all types of property from residential to commercial, hobby farms to large broadacre farming enterprises.

“We can do rental assessments for commercial property and do large broadacre farms out in the Lachlan catchment and further west… residential heritage, classic brick veneers, vacant land, It’s pretty diverse,” he said.

Strong local knowledge paired with good data is key to delivering a quality valuation, Andrew said.

“We’ve got access to property data to assist with property detail, recent sales data from agents and title transfer data sources. So we can search a whole range

of components to basically compare apples with apples,” he said.

“A heritage house in the centre of Orange is a totally different market to say a property at Clifton Grove or a property of Cowra or Lithgow. So each market is different and we spend the time looking at the evidence.”

Andrew has more than 30 years’ experience preparing development applications and has worked on planning proposals for private developers and builders involving subdivisions, commercial change of use, rural and horticultural enterprises and tourism projects.

“So my main clients are builders and developers, but also mums and dads — a whole range of people that want to do something with their land,” Andrew said.

“It could be a granny flat up the back, a multi-storey commercial site, or you could be changing your commercial property from an office to a restaurant; there’s legislation and requirements, parking and fire safety,

signage and heritage.

“I’m doing a rural subdivision where there’s water catchment and environmental issues, and I did a service station at Wellington, which had problems with the RMS, in terms of exits and traffic safety.

“In each case, my role is to get a good interpretation of the legislation, see what the potential is for property, and get a good result for the client.”

While it’s not every day you’ll have the need to call on Saunders Property and Town Planning Services, when you do, Andrew has the local knowledge and expertise that will ensure you get the best outcome.

“Reach out. I’m really a down-to-earth person and someone that will listen to what your needs are and find a solution for you,” Andrew said, “whether it’s a valuation outcome or whether it’s an approval, maximising development yield or potential — come and see me.”

Country Club Women excited to be back on their green

Following a two-and-a-half year shutdown, the renovated Country Club finally reopened to patrons back in June 2022.

And while the club’s bowlers have been aching to get back on their own green, the rain and cold weather that lasted into spring meant the grass bowling green has taken time to get back into playable form.

But last Thursday, February 16, the ladies stepped out to play on their Bloomfield bowling green for the first time in more than three years.

The OESC women’s bowls team formed some eight years ago and with their green

back, they are eager to welcome new team members to come and join in. There are no age restrictions and everyone, no matter your ability is welcome, club vice president Trish Wilson explained.

“Even if you can’t play, we have coaches who can teach you, bowls you can use,” Trish said.

Game days are held Thursday mornings and the ladies meet at 9am for a 9:30am start, with the option of lunch at the Country Club afterwards for any ladies interested. Coaching days are held every Tuesday.

And there’s opportunities to attend tournaments throughout the year, an exciting

moment for some of the team’s more competitive members and a great day to travel and enjoy a day in another town.

“We travel to Canowindra, Parkes, Forbes, Cowra, Manildra, Millthorpe — we do a lot of travel,” Trish said.

If you’d like to join the team, you can contact Trish Wilson 0400 379 294 or Elaine Connor on 0418 675 090. Alternatively, you can search OESC Country Club Women’s Bowls on Facebook.

“It’s a wonderful club,” said public relations o cer, Denise Leahy. It’s enjoyable and a fun to get away!”

What is it?

An eligible first home buyer, property up to $1,500,000, may elect to opt-in to the Property Tax System (lesser annual property tax payments) as opposed to an upfront Transfer Duty (stamp duty) payment.

The annual payments are payable by the firsthome buyer as long as they own the property.

Existing Transfer Duty (Stamp Duty) exemptions and concessions apply for first home buyers on property purchases up to $800,000.00.

NB. After the election to opt-in is made you cannot change it.

Eligibility

Must be an individual. (not a company or a trust)

Must be over 18 years.

At least one buyer must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. You or your spouse cannot have owned property in Australia before OR have claimed any previous first home buyer concessions.

Must commence to build new home within 2 years of settlement and complete building within 5 years and then reside in it for 6 months. The land cannot be used for any other purpose during this time.

Other considerations

Transition periods may apply. (contact your solicitor or Revenue (NSW)

Calculation

Owner-Occupier: $400 plus 0.3 per cent of the land value.

“It’s fantastic to be able to acknowledge people in our community who are doing such amazing work and a lot of it goes unnoticed,” Mr Donato said.

“Most of them are very humble and modest and aren’t really doing it for the recognition, but as a local member it’s important to recognise people in your local community who are going above and beyond, and doing things for the betterment of their community, or sport, or organisation.”

Individual award recipients included: Alf Cantrell who is the co-owner and curator of the Banjo Paterson Museum in Yeoval; Faith Green, who at 16 years of age impressed the state with her sporting achievements with the Australian Quarter Horse Youth Team Squad; Bill Kelly (OAM), an integral part of the Orange Liquor Accord, Bill aided the development of the Orange Regional Gallery and Library, and volunteers for St Vincent De Paul and within his Catholic community; Debbie Longmore whose work in pathology has made an important contribution to the community, and who fought for a “trauma esky” to enable onthe-spot blood transfusions rather than just at hospitals; Emma Sinclair, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer twice and still works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness of the disease; Donna Stanley whose work with Aboriginal health has aided many locals, especially those struggling with mental health issues, and Michelle Stevenson for her achievements in the NSW Hockey team, and endless hours of volunteering and dedication to the sport.

Special Community Service awards were given to Sister Mary Trainor for her lifetime of service to her community and Christine Hannus for her outstanding contributions to the community.

Brian Cullinane, Paul Hevers and Robert Nash were presented with Justice of the Peace Awards, for their many years of service to the community.

Beau Baddock, Richard Learmonth and Sonny Day accepted an award on behalf of the Golf Humans, organisers of the Longest Day golfing fundraiser for cancer research.

Christine Hannus and Tracy Wilkinson of the Orange Hospital Auxiliary also accepted an award recognising the tireless e orts of the group to support our local hospital.

Presenting the awards Mr Donato said he said he gets a lot of personal satisfaction from being able to showcase the people in our community who do such amazing work.

MISS

EIGHT’S KITCHEN NIGHTMARES

It’s been a rough week. Miss Eight caught a cold, which triggered asthma and she’s been very unwell. As a result, none of us have slept.

On Sunday morning she bounded out of bed, maybe 98 per cent better, but full of steroid-induced energy and announced she’s going to be a chef and needs an assistant.

We only have ourselves to blame, but honestly, we were just too tired to understand what that would mean. I mean, as parents, we were just happy and relieved that she was feeling better… But really, we should know better than this by now. But, as she strolled into our room, her blonde hair in pigtails, wearing a sparkly unicorn shirt and her father’s apron that’s so big she’s had to tie it at the front, she is the the absolute epitome of cuteness. Still, we haven’t completely lost our senses and start to express reservations about her idea, but like so many dictators before her, she somehow gaslights us into feeling guilty for having any suspicions that this kitchen foray will end badly. (Spoiler alert, it does). Smiling sweetly she explains that she’s going to cook pancakes for us. Now she’s never cooked them before due to an uncanny ability to disappear on Sunday mornings when her Dad and sister are in the kitchen cooking up a storm, but reappearing somehow just as the first pancake is plated on the table.

“I need an assistant! I’ll be the cook obviously,” she informs us. “But I might need some help with measuring and stu . I’ve been watching a cooking show that’s given me a great idea!”

O to the kitchen she goes, and Hubby foolishly announces that he’ll help, disorientated by her adorableness I guess. He starts gathering flour and milk and makes the mistake of slipping into “bossy dad” mode by telling Miss Eight to grab a frypan. Oh, honey, today marks your dethroning. I guess it was only a matter of time… She whips around with wide eyes, “EXCUSE ME, WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO

THE CHEF?” she shouts into his face. He turns to me, a look of confusion on his face.

“That cooking show she’s been watching, “I begin, taking a sip of my co ee and moving back to a safe distance. “You know, while I stayed at home with her all week? And you went to your air-conditioned o ce that doesn’t have any sick children in it?”

Hubby continues to look puzzled.

“Kitchen Nightmares. She’s Gordon Ramsay today.”

Miss Eight interrupts, barking at him to get a wooden spoon out of the drawer and pass it to her.

Knowing full well that she wouldn’t miss an opportunity to use the blender and that the wooden spoon is most likely only to hit him with, I leave them to it and take my co ee outside.

Setting up my laptop to watch Netflix in peace for 15 minutes, I immediately see that Miss 14 has hit me with our family’s favourite way to torture each other – messing up the algorithms.

It’s a more subtle torment than any of Miss Eight’s methods (and I’d just like to take this moment to assure everyone that she’s never been hit by us, she was just born wild. The first time I ever took the girls to a toy store and let them choose a present was five years ago. Miss 14 was eight at the time and bought herself a snuggly unicorn toy. Miss Eight was three and bought herself a slingshot. So she could “hunt.”)

My screen shows a stunningly confused “suggested for you” display of anime titles, Barbie dream house and recycling documentaries. Peals of laughter break out behind me where Miss 14 has been watching gleefully.

“Gotcha,” she says.

“Owww!” Hubby whimpers from inside.

“PAY ATTENTION!” Miss Gordon Ramsay shouts.

I pop my headphones on and check in on Barbie. Sunday mornings are beautiful.

Post Office Life Recalled

Well, not quite unsung.

Some years ago I talked to a group of people who used to work in the Post O ce and certainly remembered “the old bush life and all its ways” with a ection and pride.

Richard Gilchrist, John Jones, Robert Selwood and Colin O’Brien all joined the Post O ce in Orange in the 1950s and worked in the district until they retired.

During their combined careers they became skilled in almost every area that the Post O ce covered and there was little they didn’t know about the problems and advantages of their work.

John remembered digging trenches and laying the concrete conduits for the new exchange behind Kelly’s Hotel in 1955. He went on to insulate poles and to fix faulty lines between Orange and Stuart Town.

John was known as a “linie”.

Early lines were all overhead with open wires on wooden cross arms.

The underground cables were laid a little over a metre underground.

When Richard came to Orange in 1957, he was a trainee in his second year on a sta of 30.

“Orange was the best station to come to, because it had the latest equipment,” he told me.

As a trainee I did everything from insulation, maintaining exchanges and looking after lines which went from Orange to Broken Hill and Sydney.

Later we went underground with coaxial

cable from Orange to Melbourne through Wagga.

We were the ‘techies’ and we looked after the ends of the equipment and maintained the exchanges.”

“There were only 15 lines then and if you had a fault in the 1960s we were generally able to fix it that day,” said Robert Selwood.

The winter weather in Orange often a ected the lines.

John remembered a snowstorm along the Molong Road where there was a hedge of pine trees.

The snow froze in the following frost and “brought down everything,” said John.

“There were sparks flying out of the hedges and some of the trees came down bringing the lines with them.”

Colin O’Brien was a “postie” and trained in Sydney.

When he came to Sydney in 1957 he worked on the telegraph transmission and went out into the field.

“When we communicated we had to use morse code,” he said.

“It was like a foreign language and we all

had to know it. We were the last in NSW to do that training.”

Col also delivered telegrams which, with the advent of modern communication, no longer exist.

These messages were sent in Morse Code and translated into words to be delivered on paper by the telegram boy.

“We divided them into groupscongratulations, birthday wishes, news of death and urgent telegrams.”

During the world wars many of the dreaded telegrams were delivered to families telling of the death of a serviceman, and the telegram boys hated having to deliver them.

“Dogs were the enemy of the boy on a bike,” said Col.

“I had some other close shaves with disaster too,” he added.

“I went up the back of a meat wagon once and ended up among the carcasses.”

Richard explained that, with the manual exchange, it was sometimes necessary for subscribers to be on a party line, which meant that it was shared by as many as 10 people.

“There were di erent rings for each person and everyone had a special code.”

This didn’t stop some from listening to other people’s conversations though. In the days before the internet it was great entertainment!

But subscribers could hear the click of other peoples’ phones as they picked up the receiver and had a good idea of the eavesdropper.

“One man was caught out,” Robert told us. “When the conversation was about to end and the caller said goodnight, he also added “ And goodnight Arch,” and Arch replied “Goodnight” before he could help himself.”

It also had its advantages, because the telephonist could allow several people to speak with each other which was specially helpful when discussing the progress of a fire or flood.

As with that other great institution, the Railways, the Post O ce was a family a air – sons and daughters often followed their parents and stayed in the job until retirement.

Col summed it up.

“For a long time we were one big family— with great fellowship and camaraderie. Gradually things changed and we were split in two, like the railway. That’s when the feeling of community and working together was lost.”

Those old times are certainly not forgotten, especially by people living in remote areas and for whom the telephone was the only link to the outside world.

NGURANG-GU YALBALINYA PROGRAM EMPOWERS OUR YOUTH

t was great to visit the wonderful students and teachers who are part of the Ngurang-gu Yalbalinya program at Lake Canobolas in Orange.

The Australian-first learning program helps young men knuckle down on their maths and literacy skills, and reconnect with their culture.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, joined the visit which launched a week of action on the Voice.

Over the coming days, weeks and months, there are going to be plenty of opportunities to learn about the Voice and what it means for Indigenous communities across our region.

This is a pivotal moment in Australia’s history, and I would urge everyone in our area to find out more about it (there will be plenty of local opportunities coming up) and support giving our first Australians this long overdue recognition and voice. Together we can do it.

VISIT TO CANOBOLAS RURAL TECH HIGH SCHOOL

During the week I was also delighted to stop in to Canobolas Rural Technology High School and chat to many amazing students, teachers and mentors.

It was great to learn about the brilliant programs and initiatives that the students are encouraged to get involved in, like the Clontarf Academy and the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA). The future of Australia is in safe hands with these bright young people.

WORLD CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS COME TO OUR REGION

Thestars of world athletics descended on our region for the World Cross Country Championships. It was great to see our region host a major international sporting event - this time in Bathurst!

This was the first World Athletics Series event to be held in Australia in 25 years.

In fact, this was the first time the Cross Country Championships were held in

Australia, and only the second time they were held in Oceania, following the 1988 edition in Auckland, New Zealand.

It was bronze for the Aussies in the mixed relay with all of our athletes doing our country proud!

Benjamin Limo, Kenya’s 5000m world champion in Helsinki in 2005 was loving his stay in our region and Australia’s own Linden Hall (Tokyo Olympic finalist with a PB) was very generous with her time, chatting to her many fans who were undoubtedly inspired by her presence in our area.

Congratulations to all the athletes and everyone who made the Championships such an outstanding success, including the hundreds of hardworking volunteers!

COUNCIL AT WORK

COUNCIL ASKS PUBLIC FOR OPINION ON ORANGE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND DRAFT CONCEPT DESIGN

Orange City Council is asking for the community’s opinion on a draft concept design for upgrades to the Orange Adventure Playground in a second round of consultation.

The playground was built 20 years ago, however it is showing signs of deterioration, while community demand for an upgraded facility has increased. The project has received $1.25 million from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions fund.

Council’s Sport and Recreation Community Committee Chair, Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said the first round of consultation was held in November last year to ask playground users and members of the community what improvements they would like to see made at the playground.

“More than 200 people completed an online survey and a further 67 people shared their ideas on Council’s YourSay

Orange site, while about 150 people participated in a face-to-face consultation day at the playground,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“The top six elements requested

were slides and climbing equipment, trampolines, water play, a bike and scooter track, swings, and activities for bigger kids, while a flying fox, sandpit and half-courts were also popular.”

Based on the community’s feedback, consultants from Civille Pty Ltd have developed a draft concept design.

The plan locates the play areas, seating, barbecues and open lawn areas across the site. It doesn’t prescribe the exact type or location of each individual piece of play equipment, which will be determined in later stages.

“At this stage we want your feedback on the layout and what each of the spaces might include before going to the next level of detail. The plan is still a draft and won’t be finalised until we hear back from the community about what they think of the concept design,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

Visit the YourSay Orange website to view details of the draft concept design, complete a survey and share your ideas at yoursay.orange.nsw.gov.au.

A public consultation day will be held at the playground from 10am-2pm on Saturday 4 March for playground users to provide face-to-face feedback.

WASTE DISPOSAL TRENDS REVEALED IN EFFORT TO DIVERT RESOURCES FROM LANDFILL

A recent audit of Orange City Council’s kerbside bin service has found more than a third of the waste in residents’ red bins is organic waste that could be kept out of landfill.

Regional waste management group NetWaste recently studied multiple loads of Orange’s red, yellow and greenlidded bins and found 37 per cent of items in the redlidded general waste bin was organic material that could be composted or placed in the green-lidded bin, while a further 20 per cent was recyclable material that should be placed in the yellow-lidded bin.

Orange Deputy Mayor Gerald Power said the audit was important to provide Council with a snapshot of the community’s current disposal trends and common contaminants found in each bin.

“By correctly using the three kerbside bins available in Orange, we can reduce waste and help the environment,” Cr Power said.

Orange’s waste generation had increased from an average of 11.68kg per person in 2021 to 12.47kg per person in 2022.

Eighty-eight per cent of material in the yellow-lidded

recycling bin was found to be acceptable, however, bagged garbage, soft plastics and non-recyclable plastics were the most common contaminants discovered.

The audit found the majority of the material in the green-lidded Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) bin was garden waste, with food waste accounting for only 5 per cent of the bin’s contents. Material placed in plastic or compostable bags was the most common contaminant.

“I’m encouraged with the findings that the residents who choose to use their yellow and green lidded bins are largely getting it right by keeping most contaminants out,” Cr Power said.

“On the other hand, it’s clear we still have a long way to go with encouraging some residents who still put all their waste in their red bin without sorting out the organic and recyclable waste that could be put to better use.

“Diverting food and garden waste away from landfill reduces the production of greenhouse gases, as well as saving valuable landfill space.”

For more information on Orange City Council’s kerbside bin service, visit the website to view the 2023 Residential Waste Services Guide.

Orange is well-known for its magnificent gardens, heritage parks, tree-lined streets the superb autumn display that has seen us labelled the ‘Colour City’.

New Kite Street dentist finds life’s good here in Orange

“My family came to Orange for a one-day trip and we liked it and then luckily I got a place here to work,” said Dr Shilpa, who has recently joined the team at Kite Street Dental as an Associate Dentist.

“When we came, we really liked how beautiful Orange is, I loved the climate and everything — It is very easy to commute anywhere, easy to get groceries, to pick up our son. It made the decision to move easy,” she said.

Orange also won the hearts of her extended family, Dr Shilpa said, with her in-laws also now looking to make the move from Sydney to Orange.

“Everyone liked it here and they pushed me, saying, ‘You should apply somewhere here.’ And so I got a job here! When we are all settled here, my in-laws will be moving to us because they also like Orange… so everyone will be shifting here!”

Dr Shilpa brings a wealth of experience to the Kite Street Dental practice. Having

completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Bfuhs University in India) in 2009, she continued her passion for studies and spent a further three years attaining a Masters in Endodontics (root canal specialist).

“I am still a general dentist here, but I have the expertise of three years more in root canal specialisation. So challenging cases of root canals, any complex kind of calcified canals, blocked canals, if there is loss of tooth structure… these are things that I am more a specialist in,” Dr Shilpa said, adding that she spent a further five years working as a root canal specialist at a teaching hospital.

Relocating to Australia, she got her Australian dental registration certification in 2022 and is thrilled to be practising and making a new life here in Orange with her husband and six-year-old son.

“It is very beautiful and I like all the nature and the weather. It is very easy to get around, we like it here!”

It took just a weekend visit for Dr Shilpa Walia to decide that Orange was where she wanted to call home.

The aim of this circle is to provide a safe space, a brave space which is nurturing and supportive.

The circle is a judgement free zone- a space to be yourself and connect with like minded women. A Women’s circle offers much needed relief from the 9-5 “Hustle” our society values so deeply.

The circle is open to the community of Orange for Women who value connection, friendship, and laughter.

Stunning Rosedale Farm Estate available on Airbnb for exclusive Easter getaway

Design lovers will have the chance to enjoy the ultimate Easter escape to Orange, with an exclusive Airbnb stay at interior and lifestyle stylist Steve Cordony’s idyllic Rosedale Farm estate.

Dating back to 1877, Rosedale Farm is a beautifully restored estate located just 7 kilometres from Orange.

And on February 27, Steve is opening up this stunning property for a four-night stay for up to 14 guests, from Thursday 6 April to Monday 10 April for just $25 per night.

Rosedale Farm’s main homestead features six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a formal dining room, lounge, library and kitchen. The homestead and two farm stays are positioned amongst the estate’s

lavish, lushly landscaped gardens.

Every guestroom at Rosedale Farm has been individually designed by Steve in his signature contemporary European style, layered with an Italian farmhouse sensibility, creating a uniquely luxurious accommodation in the heart of the countryside.

As one of Australia’s leading interior and lifestyle stylists, Steve is passionate about design as a means of bringing people together to create memories with loved ones.

His renovation journey of Rosedale Farm amassed a significant online following, with many Aussies inspired by the impeccable attention to detail, subtle nods to the property’s heritage, and mix of both contemporary and antique furnishings.

“I created Rosedale Farm with the goal

of turning this incredible historic property into a one-of-a-kind destination for guests to connect and create memories in,” Steve said, adding that Rosedale Farm is filled with special touches that will delight guests.

“I am thrilled to partner with Airbnb on hosting an unforgettable four-night stay this Easter.”

Up to 14 guests will be able to holiday at Rosedale Farm for an exclusive four-night stay for only $25 AUD* per night.

This unforgettable country getaway is open for bookings on Monday, February 27 at 9am from airbnb.com.au/ stevecordony and can be booked on a first come first serve basis.

The two Rosedale farm stays will then be available to book ongoing from mairbnb.com.au/stevecordony.

Fresh, new indie film production company, The Story Mill are bringing their award-winning new Aussie comedy, ‘Evicted!’ to Odeon 5 on Wednesday, March 8.

The one-night screening event is part of a tour that will have the film crew travelling to 14 towns.

Evicted follows four young housemates on their race against time to find a home in Sydney. The four housemates must navigate finding their new house, while also tackling job hunting, side hustles and dating. Relatable, right?

Evicted has received critically acclaimed reviews and received the audience choice award at the Sydney Film Festival 2022.

Story Mill Producer, Sophie Saville describes the film as a modern-day The Castle, for millennials, as well as the intriguing mix between Pulp Fiction and Muriel’s Wedding “It’s like Pulp Fiction without the violence,” explained the

film’s writer and director, Rowan Devereux.

“But first and foremost, it’s a comedy that touches on the rental crisis, and some harder topics. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. It’ll change your life!”

And While the film is set in Sydney, there is a little piece of regional New South Wales in the film, Sophie explained.

Keen-eyed local viewers may even spot a few recognisable locations as the final scene of the film was shot right here in Orange, she said.

After the movie screens at Odeon, audience members have the opportunity to take part in a Q and A session with cast members, writers, and producers.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from www.odeon5.com.au/movie/evictedmod

You can find out more about the film by visiting evictedthemovie.com or search for “Evicted the movies on Facebook and Instagram.

Screening this Saturday at the Odeon 5 cinema, Franklin tells the story of the most significant environmental protest in Australia’s history.

Oliver Cassidy was not born when his father, took to the waters of Tasmania’s Franklin River on a mission to join protestors blockading the building of a dam on what was the last remaining wild river.

Seven years after his father’s death, and having faced other deep personal challenges, Oliver set out to paddle the Franklin River himself. The story of the paddle and footage of the original journey and the protests that echoed beyond Tasmania is the movie, Franklin

Björn Again bringing ABBA’s biggest hits and

70s glam to Orange this Friday

ABBA fans get excited as Björn Again brings ABBA’s timeless hits to the Orange Civic Theatre stage in a sing-along, dancealong extravaganza this Friday, February 24.

Björn Again performs all the biggest and best ABBA hits in a highly-entertaining world-class show that is fun for all ages and nationalities. Critically acclaimed, and endorsed by ABBA, it’s been praised by the world’s biggest rock stars and adored by fans worldwide.

Björn Again were established in Melbourne Australia in 1988 and have since performed over 7000 concerts in over 120 countries worldwide.

Björn Again is widely regarded as the most successful tribute band of all time and is even credited with starting the tribute band genre.

Sydney pub rock band, Avalanche, are bringing their good-time rock ‘n’ roll sound to Orange, making their 4 on the 4loor debut this March.

Avalanche are joining Harriet Fahey, Sporadic Bin Rats and Implexive on the 4 on the 4loor at the Victoria Hotel on Saturday, March 4, and will be promoting their brand-new single, ‘Sweet Baby Brown Eyes’.

The four-piece band, formed by husband and wife duo, Steven (lead singer) and Veronica Campbell (lead guitarist), started out in an old steel factory in 2018. The duo were then joined by Ryan Roma on drums and Arthur Davis on rhythm guitar.

From humble beginnings, Avalanche have gone on to support acts such as Buckcherry, Fozzy, Kingswood and The Poor. They also played one of the headlining spots at Thrashville Festival in September 2022 and headlined their first international festival, Rocktober Fest, last October.

Their music videos have generated over 260,000 views on YouTube and Facebook, and they continue

selling out shows across Australia.

“We just play good-time rock and roll – the sort of stuff you’d hear at a pub, so pub rock, classic rock,” lead singer Steven explained.

“It’s all about having a good time, a bit of fun and trying to have a bit of a party!”

The band are looking forward to hitting the Vic Hotel stage on March 4 and the opportunity to explore what Orange has to offer.

“We’ve been trying to get out a bit more and do more regional communities instead of just playing in the city all the time,” Steven said.

“I’m a bit of a country boy, so I’m looking forward to getting out of the city for a bit!”

See Avalanche at 4 on the 4loor on Saturday, March 4 at the Victoria Hotel.

Banjo Paterson Scale Rally weekend

The Banjo Paterson Scale Rally has been held in February at the Orange Model Aircraft Club’s Borenore site for over 30 years, attracting pilots and planes from a wide area.

A SMALL CLUB WITH A LONG HISTORY

The Orange Model Aircraft Club has a long history and is one of the longest-running in existence in Australia, says club president/treasure Norm Barnes.

Founded in 1929, Orange Model Aircraft Club is now in its 94th year of operation serving aero modellers in the Central Western area of New South Wales. The club has been running continuously, without a break, to the present day. The flying field has been at a few different sites over the years, but the club has been flying at the Borenore Field Day site since 2004,

“Membership has fluctuated over the years as interest in the hobby has waned,” says Norm. “However, we currently have a membership hovering around 30 with the average age around 70 years. Here you will find people who talk your languagefriendly people with a wealth of knowledge and experience, always ready to pass it on and share the experience of model flying with you.”

With the current interest in drones at the moment, Norm said the club is the perfect site for those that wish to fly in a safe manner as it is a registered field with CASA.

Members travel from outside the Orange area to attend social flying days, usually held each Sunday from 10.30am and new members are always welcome, he said.

Orange Model Aircraft Club hosts two main events during the year: The Alan Brown Memorial Old Timers Event, a full weekend of flying models that pre-date World War 2; and the Banjo Paterson Scale Rally held every February for over 30 years.

Pilots travel from all over the country to attend these events, Norm said, adding that it’s thanks to the teamwork of their small but passionate and dedicated membership, that sees visiting clubs compliment them on the condition of the flying field.

For anyone interested in the hobby, Norm said these days most model kits come almost ready-to-fly, and foam electrics are also gaining popularity.

“So different from when you would buy a box of wood, then plan to cut and build it in preparation to fly!” he said.

A not-for-profit club, Norm said they provide a safe flying site for social flying and thanks to a recent Community Building Partnership grant they have upgraded their facilities.

“Anyone wishing to learn to fly planes or drones can come along to the Borenore flying field on Escort way on a Sunday,” he said.

“We have a number of Model Aircraft Association of Australia qualified instructors, who are fully insured and are ready and willing to teach you to fly radio-controlled models.”

White wine steamed mussels

My Dad’s side of the family comes from Galicia, in the north west of Spain, where you can find some of the best seafood and wine in the world. If you ever go there, you’ll be able to discover one of the most expensive seafood in the market, called goose barnacles, as well as the economical and traditional mussels.

We absolutely love mussels! There are so many ways of cooking them, but today I’m going to show you one of the easiest: steamed mussels! It is as simple as putting them in a pot with a bit of liquid and flavours, covering them with the lid and let them steam in the evaporating liquid. As easy as that!

Of course, the more quality you use with the flavours added, the better! My advice? Use our own region’s awesome local garlic and onion, cook them well and choose a great white wine that you like to drink (I’d personally use an Albariño wine, a Spanish grape, or one of the many local amazing whites), add aromatics like bay leaves, grated tomatoes, etc, reduce well, and serve straight away to your family.

From a health point of view, you should know that mussels are a clean and nutritious source of protein! They are a great source of omega-3, zinc and iron, and are sustainably farmed with no

INGREDIENTS:

- 1kg mussels

- Splash of extra virgin olive oil

- 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

- 1 onion, finely chopped

- 1 Bay leaf

- 1 glass of local white wine

- 2 fresh tomatoes, grated

negative impact on the environment. Don’t be scared of them, trust me! Remember to buy mussels that look and smell fresh, with closed shells. You can press together the shells if any are open and if the shell doesn’t close, the mussel is dead and should be discarded (also toss any with broken shells). You can even buy them now in vacuum packs that will make your shopping process and carrying them home much more convenient.

In my opinion, mussels are one of those seafood items that are super easy to cook at home.

And it allows you to use your hands, dipping crusty bread in the sauce and getting messy, one of the best parts about eating something delicious!

Have fun with them! Enjoy!

- Salt to taste (be aware the mussels will already be salty)

OPTIONAL: a small piece of chilli for a little bit of heat.

STEPS:

1. Add a splash of extra virgin olive oil and add the chopped garlic. Stir until it changes colour.

2. Add the onion on medium heat and cook gently and until soft. Add the bay leaf, turn the heat up and add the glass of wine.

3. Reduce the white wine well, and then add the grated tomatoes (and the chilli if you like the heat).

4. Add the mussels all at once and cover with a lid.

5. After 10 to 15 minutes all your mussels will be opened. Stir if necessary.

6. Serve it with a good piece of crusty bread or with some garlic pasta to toss through.

NOTE: If you have leftover sauce when you finish, strain it and freeze it. It will be an amazing base for future elaborations!

2023 Fair Dinkum Men’s Retreat

Fair Dinkum is about men sharing each other’s narrative with Christ, who strengthens us. When we know each other’s narrative, we pray for each other, we extend a helping hand, we sacrifice for each other – that’s how humans are designed to learn and love.

Uncover the past of the historic Collits’ Inn with Christine Stewart

Discover the surprises and mysteries found in restoring the historic 1823 Collits’ Inn at Orange City Library this Saturday, February 25.

Presented by Orange and District Historical Society, Christine Stewart will be talking about her book Collits’ Inn: Uncovering the past.

When Christine Stewart and her husband Russell bought the Inn in 1998 it was severely run down and almost on the point of collapse – its history forgotten, distorted or dispersed.

Over the next four years, Christine researched, recorded and collated the building’s history and painstakingly restored the inn and its outbuildings, saving them from being destroyed completely.

Local students starting their studies financially stress-free

Located at the foot of Mount York, in Hartley Vale, just on the western side of the Blue Mountains, the Inn was built by Pierce Collits, an ex-convict in 1823.

All travellers crossing the Blue Mountains had to come down the notoriously dangerous Cox’s Pass, past the inn, on their

way to the settlement of Bathurst and other lands to the west. It is one of Australia’s earliest surviving buildings and is rich in history.

Christine’s book details the many surprises uncovered during the restoration, such as Collits’ Inn Operetta, an early nearby cemetery, a story of murder, many beautiful linoleums and the discovery of two strange mediaeval customs.

On Saturday afternoon, Christine will be speaking both about the restoration and the writing of the book, thirteen years after selling it.

Meet Christine Stewart, author of Collits’ Inn Uncovering the past at Orange City Library this Saturday, February 25, from 2–4pm. Bookings via Eventbrite or call 6393 8132.

Continuing your education after school seems like a great idea, but the reality is it’s quite often too expensive to fathom. Travel costs, tools, often an expensive relocation and the dreaded hundred-dollar textbooks that have to be up to date because heaven forbid a sentence or two may have changed.

It’s why, for the past 30 years, the Country Education Foundation (CEF) has been extending a helping hand to try and close the gap that exists between country and city students looking to further their education, whether they are undertaking an apprenticeship or training to be a medical doctor.

CEF Orange and District is supporting a record 29 students in 2023, with the successful scholarship applicants recently attending a presentation night at the Orange Botanical Gardens.

CEF support comes in the form of financial grants that can be used for

accommodation, tools, textbooks — any required to help them in their studies. As well as financial support students are also paired with a “buddy” – a committee member that the student can reach out to, meet up with for a chat and share their experiences with.

“What I love is the passion that they come in with,” said long-time member of CEF, Lyndall Harrison, who currently has three buddies.

“It gives you great faith in the youth of today. They’re just wonderful,” Lyndall continued proudly.

“It’s pretty amazing where our students are going, and a lot of them are the first in their families to do tertiary education along any line.”

A not-for-profit organisation CEF relies on donations to be able to support students through their tertiary education. For more information or to make donations visit www.cef.org.au

This week marks an anniversary. It is certainly not an anniversary that is worth celebrating, but it is one that is worth remembering. This week, on the 24th of February, it will have been one year since the Russian army launched its attack on Ukraine. As we all watched the horror unleashed and the theatre of war return to Europe, there was a sense of disbelief that Vladimir Putin would embark on this war. As the scenes of destruction filled our newsfeeds and TVs there was a sense of helplessness in the air as we wondered what we could do to help. As the war rolled on and the destruction mounted, I know I found myself asking how long this would last. As we saw the mass exodus of families fleeing Ukraine and looking for a new life there was a wonderful and welcoming spirit among many who sought to open their arms to help those in need. One example of this that has stuck with me, was of the many prams that were left on railway platforms in Poland for fleeing families to use. It captured so poignantly, the spirit of solidarity and love towards those that had lost everything. There have been beautiful stories from our own community too of people being able to accept refugees and lend a helping hand. But the fact remains that there seems to be no end in sight to the bloodshed and violence as the machines of war continue to turn. So how can

we appropriately reflect on twelve months of war? What tools do we each have that we can use to help us continue to show our support, solidarity, and care towards those who have lost everything in the face of carnage? Where can all those who have lost everything find hope and comfort in the face of loss? The Bible gives answers to these questions over and over again as it shows that hope and answers can be found in the God of the Bible. For example, in Psalm 17:6-7, it says this: ‘I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer. Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.’

In the face of loss, of evil and dislocation from home, the words of this Psalm o er comfort and hope. For all of us as we reflect on all that has occurred in Ukraine this past year, perhaps there is an opportunity for us to think and reflect on where or who we call on in our times of distress. As we mark with a sense of sadness and despair over the war in Ukraine, perhaps we can take a moment to ask, or even pray to God that he would show who he is and bring and work to bring an end to this conflict.

THE POWER TO FORGIVE

You might remember the story of Daniel and Leila Abdallah… who very publicly chose to forgive the drunk driver who killed three of their six children and their niece (Oatlands, February 1, 2020). Three more children, including another daughter, were seriously wounded. This family chose forgiveness – not in their own strength, but in the strength that they find in their relationship with Jesus.

The Abdallahs have always remained firm in explaining how they have been able to forgive. “Forgiveness at that time, I believe, came from the Holy Spirit,” said Leila Abdallah. Is there something or someone you think you can’t forgive in your life? You may be right. On your own, it may well be impossible. However, there is hope!

The Abdallahs had received forgiveness themselves. Psalm103, verse 12, says: “As far as the East is from the West, so far has He (God) removed our transgressions from us.”

That hope is found in the person of Jesus – his Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us when we trust in him. Maybe you know someone who knows Jesus – why not ask them how Jesus helps them to forgive?

THUMBS UP to the Gnoo Blas Car Club for allowing the Orange Prostate Group to hold an information stand at their recent car show. The day was a huge success and we were extremely pleased to learn that the men not only looked after their beautiful cars but not their health. We were delighted to find so many men had had a blood test for prostate cancer and were willing to talk about their experiences. This was a huge change over previous years when men would not even know what we were talking about. Thank you to all the men who spoke so openly about prostate cancer and made our group very happy that our information days over the years have had an e ect.

THUMBS UP to Cooper at BCF for his outstanding customer service when we were buying a fishing rod for our daughter. Your enthusiasm and willingness to really help us were just fantastic. Great work!

THUMBS UP to Brock at Bunnings, for excellent customer service and willingness to help with our recent outdoor furniture purchase. Very happy customer!

THUMBS UP to Ben Lander at Landers Music for his endless support of musicians in Orange and the live music scene. We appreciate you.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to the sta at Quality Care Disability Services for being able to accommodate my son in their respite house with only two hours’ notice due to my recent emergency hospitalisation. They provided top-notch care during his stay, which we had to extend twice. Their care and support are definitely quality. Thank you Quality Care Disability Services!

THUMBS DOWN to the animal shelter in Orange that turned away a litter of tiny kittens that were found dumped. Isn’t that the entire point of the shelter?

A MASSIVE THUMBS UP to Central West Mowers and Heating for doing a super job with my mower and dropping it o bang on time on a Friday afternoon. Great service and friendly sta .

THUMBS UP to Mrs Pullbrook for a great start to the year, with her new class at Orange East Public School!

A HUGE THUMBS UP to the people who put on the car, bike, and truck show at Jack Brabham Oval on Saturday. It was a great show for Orange. Keep it going!

THUMBS DOWN to people who play extremely loud music (day or night) at home without consideration for neighbours who are shift workers/work from home/have little kids to get to sleep. A little consideration for others goes a long way.

DOUBLE THUMBS UP to Cherry Nails for your excellent, friendly, caring service.

THUMBS UP to Mike and the TaiChi group for your support and concern when I felt faint during our Monday class. Thumbs up to Chris and Ann from Uniting Care for your action and patience while we waited for the ambulance. Thumbs up to the ambos for their friendly and professional treatment and care. Thank you all! We are so blessed to live in this wonderful Orange community!

THUMBS DOWN to the Council who put in rear-to-the-kerb parking but do not put marked spaces to stop the people who can’t park from preventing three other cars from parking.

THUMBS DOWN to a local bus line, leaving kids abandoned when the bus is behind schedule, and they miss their connecting buses. When the issue was raised with management after several instances in a week, they are not addressing the concerns of the parents or accept that there might be a problem. Bring Back Kev!

THUMBS UP to Orange Vet Hospital for the care the sta (particularly Hermione and Hannah) showed me. I recently had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanise my lovely cat. The sta could not have been more considerate and caring at such a di cult time. Much appreciated.

Giants from the garden

How’s this for a couple of giant cabbages! These two monsters, displayed by OPR (Orange Producers Rural Co-operative) employee Elizabeth Doyle, were harvested in February 1958 by home gardener Norm Bowen of Bletchington Street. In a time of drought, the only water they received was what fell from the sky, which was precious little. The larger one, on the right, weighed 25 pounds and measured three feet three inches, while the ‘smaller’ one weighed 23 pounds.

“Feelings”, that’s a crucial element we need to keep in mind when loving and caring for people in the twilight of their life, and especially those who for one reason or another, now face life alone.

Am I right, or wrong, in saying that?

For me personally, that’s what I’ve come to realise, but only after now finding myself very much among this group. How I got here is not important, what is important, is what am I going to do about it? And if so, what CAN I do about it? Of course the answer to that is as in every situation, there’s ALWAYS things we can do to improve (almost) anything. All it takes is for one person to have the necessary passion and desire to fully work a problem, and then see it through. I hope I’m one of those people.

Let me now briefly share what I’ve learned over the last twelve months, and then what I’m doing to try and make a difference in the lives of older people, based on what I’ve discovered.

Loneliness is no fun!

If you look deep into the eyes of people who live alone, you’ll often see that there is a difference in them, sort of a deep-rooted touch of sadness. To those looking on, it probably won’t be obvious, and most no doubt, put on a good front, but since joining that group, I see it, probably because I now have a much better appreciation of how they may be feeling. I describe it like now having two halves to my life, one half being a massive void in my life, the other being a massive excitement about what I can still do to make a difference. Living between the two halves is not easy, at least not for me at this early stage of my new circumstances.

Living on your own brings with it a lot of emotions and feelings, and many more responsibilities, quite different from those when you have someone close to you to share life with. One has to be much more disciplined in many areas, with looking after oneself properly a main priority. If my experience can be used as a guide, I’ve noticed that everyone is different and each has to find their own way of dealing with whatever circumstances they face. There’s no one method fits all, or so it seems to me.

There’s obviously much more to

it than just this, but here’s not the place to go into that. What I will say however, is the challenge that I want to help address is in that area of “feelings” I mentioned. Put simply, I’m of the belief that anything that can be done, ANYTHING AT ALL, no matter how small, that can help older people feel better, more loved and appreciated, well that’s a step in the right direction, and that’s the area of service where I want to put

my energies from here on.

There are many ways this can be achieved and some of them are mentioned in a new magazine that I’m involved with called Seniors Happy Life. This magazine sets out to help those in the twilight years of their life to fill in time, be entertained, reflect on happy times, provide incentives for engaging in conversation with others and much

more. Seniors Happy Life contains 100per cent Enjoyment and is just the starting point in my quest to improve the quality of life for older people, and not just locally but right across Australia. If you have a heart for older people, please cheer me on, and help me spread the word about Seniors Happy Life magazine! Let’s see if we really CAN do better for those among us that we affectionately call Seniors.
