It’s been great to have the warm weather return this week after having to pull a jumper out of the wardrobe on Friday evening! I did have a moment of dread that we might see an early end to the summer (it’s only just begun!) but here’s hoping for at least a few more weeks of warm sunshine.

On Monday, I attended the launch of a new campaign by Orange Push for Palliative to see a new 12-bed hospice built at Bloomeld. The hardworking volunteer advocacy group has identied a site not far from the Orange Hospital that would be ideal for a purpose-built hospice. It is a cause that we are happy to support and one that few could nd fault with. There are more details on the following page.

As I mentioned last week we are preparing to launch a new regular segment in OC Life to recognise local volunteers and community-minded people who make our city a better place to live, but we need your help! You can read more about that on page 5.

EDITOR’S
note Jonathan Roe

At a public launch on Monday, February 6, Orange Push for Palliative President Jenny Hazelton called on both state and Federal governments to fully fund a purpose-built stand-alone hospice on a greenfield site close to Orange Hospital.

“Our message is: it’s time we had a hospice. It is our turn. There is a great inequity of funding across rural NSW and metropolitan areas and it’s time things became a bit more equal and had a bit more spread,” Jenny said onsite at Bloomfield on Monday.

The group, founded following a public meeting in 2015, has spent many years advocating for better Palliative care services for Orange and the surrounding districts. Through their e orts, a two-bed dedicated unit was established in Orange Hospital, but it is simply not enough, Jenny said.

“The beds in the hospital only o er endof-life care, between three and seven days, and so that doesn’t include the whole of the palliative care journey,” she said.

“What we want to do is remove palliative care from an acute care hospital, because in the acute care, in hospitals, they are busy, there are buzzers, there’s noise, there’s

trolleys, there’s no sense of peace — even though we’ve tried to ensure that with the palliative care beds…

“[Somewhere] the patients can be with their family in a tranquil, peaceful environment and they can spend their precious time — at whatever stage of their palliative care journey — together without the hassle and the stress.”

The new push for a hospice in Orange comes after the NSW Government announced funding to double the palliative care bed capacity at Tamworth Hospital from six beds to 12.

“Tamworth has six dedicated beds already and now the Government has announced they are going to double that to twelve beds, but we haven’t heard what’s happening here,” Jenny said.

“...that’s $21 million for a freestanding, green build and that’s what we want. And why shouldn’t we share resources, get blueprints… so we don’t all reinvent the wheel when there’s services that need to be developed?

“We will be going to Tamworth and we will be talking to them and hopefully we will be able to share resources so it’s more equitable across the state.”

The preferred site identified by Orange Push for Palliative is a parcel of bushland located

south of the Bloomfield Oval, not far from Ronald McDonald House.

The tranquil setting and location close to hospital services make it ideal, Jenny said.

“It’s on Crown land… you see the beautiful gum trees, you’ll hear that it’s so quiet, you’ll hear the birds.

“Losing a loved one… if you’ve been through it, you will know that it is a rollercoaster and the type of care you get and the end can leave you feeling warm and peaceful or leave you having all sorts of negative, bad thoughts that often remain for a long period of time.

“There can be very di erent experiences and we want to make sure that people have the opportunity to have positive, and I know that sounds strange, but as positive an experience as it can be.”

Orange barrister, Bill Walsh, backed the push for a local hospice, telling of his family’s recent experience at St John of God Hospital in Perth, during the final days of life of his son, Todd Walsh.

“The treatment that he received in the hospice was just first class. Whereas the oncology ward was busy and noisy, down at the hospice it was tranquil and peaceful,” Bill said.

“It was indeed a very wonderful experience for us, his family, we are just so pleased that he had that opportunity to have the benefit of a hospice…

“I think it is very very important that we, as a local community here, push as hard as we can to have a facility such as they have at St John of God. We need a hospice, and it’s not just for the elderly, it is for young people like Todd, who was 40 years of age.”

Orange Push for Palliative has put in submissions to the relevant government ministers as well as NSW Premier Dominic Perrotett and has been contacting all candidates ahead of the NSW Government state election next month.

“We want this to be above politics; this is not a thing to play games with,” Jenny said, asking that people make their voices heard on the issue.

“We call on the people of Orange to join us now as we lobby state and federal governments to allocate appropriate funding similar to the recent announcement by the NSW Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor of the allocation of $21 million for a dedicated hospice in Tamworth.

“We want it. It is our turn; it is our time.”

Know someone who makes life in Orange better?

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Orange City Life has teamed up with Ashcroft’s IGA and their Let’s Make Better charity to give a small nod of appreciation to the community-minded people and volunteers who make Orange a better place to live.

Whether it’s being on one of the many sports committees in the city, a lifetime of charity work or just looking out for a neighbour, these small deeds often go unnoticed but they make a huge di erence in the lives of others and our community.

Orange City life is launching a regular ‘Volunteer of the month’ segment in our magazine and we have partnered with Ashcroft’s IGA to give one worthy recipient a $100 grocery voucher each month.

“I think it’s good for people to see good news stories and what other people are doing out there and maybe be inspired. I think people are unaware of what people actually do for others in the community,” Rochelle Ashcroft said.

Women’s National Cricket League action at Wade Park this weekend

NSW Breakers Vs ACT Meteors Friday and Sunday matches

Orange’s Wade Park will host some of the country’s best female cricketers this weekend

the NSW Breakers meet the ACT Meteors in two matches on Friday, February 10 and Sunday, February 12.

The two matches are part of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) one-day series.

Orange’s own Phoebe Litchfield plays for the NSW Breakers and is likely to return to the Wade Park pitch to represent her state this weekend.

Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Community Committee Chair,

ONE LUCKY BOY’S CRICKET DREAMS COMING TRUE

Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said it was great to see representative cricket matches being played at Wade Park.

“I’m thrilled Council can partner with Cricket NSW to bring this level of competition to regional areas and provide the opportunity for fans of the game to see Australia’s best female cricketers in action,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

Orange City Council has been enhancing facilities at Wade Park for some years to support local cricket and attract first-class cricket matches, most notably with the addition of the Carl Sharpe Indoor Cricket Centre in late 2020.

Improvements to grandstand seating and additions such as sight screens and

turf practice wickets followed. Work on replacing the field lighting and revamping the public toilets, changerooms and storage facilities is underway.

Representatives from Cricket NSW inspected Wade Park in January in preparation for the matches and were impressed with the venue.

“This is testament to the hard work of our grounds sta as well as Council’s commitment to building the reputation of Wade Park as the premier cricket venue in the Central West,” Cr Greenhalgh said. Play begins 10am on Friday, February 10 and 10am Sunday, February 12. Entry is free and the canteen will be open.

Charlie Banham has big dreams of playing professional cricket one day and this weekend he’s lucky enough to be getting up close to all the action of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) one-day match at Wade Park.

When the NSW Breakers meet the ACT Meteors on Friday, February 10, Charlie will be catching all the action from the commentator’s box.

“I think it will be an awesome time there!” says cricket tragic Charlie, who is a student at the Anson Street School.

It was Charlie’s school work experience week under the wing of Cricket NSW coach, Angus Norton, that saw him get the best seat in the house this weekend.

“It was quite enjoyable,” said Charlie, of his work at Orange’s main cricket facility. “I got taken on a tour of Wade Park – I was teaching others how to coach and how to use the bowling machine.”

Charlie, who has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), doesn’t see that as standing in the way of his dreams of being a professional cricketer. His only concern? The volume of fans and autographs he may have to deal with!

But for now, Charlie’s excited to enjoy his brush with fame this weekend and, of course, watching a good game of cricket with friends and family.

“Red hot” field of bowlers eyeing gold in Orange

Orange City Bowling Club’s iconic Golden Eagle Classic Pairs tournament has attracted unprecedented interest from some of the best lawn bowlers in the country.

Now in its 53rd year, the Golden Eagle tournament has long had a reputation for attracting strong competition, but this year the field is “red hot”, says tournament organiser, Lee Stintson.

A full complement of 42 teams will take to the greens on Tuesday, February 28 for the start of the tournament, which concludes Friday, March 3, says Lee, adding that all available places were filled just seven days after the tournament was advertised.

“It’s been incredible! We sent entries out far and wide for people to come and play and the response was fantastic,” says Lee.

“It was great to fill that up early and the quality of player coming this year is… yeah, it’s exceptional!”

Among those competing for a share in the $20,000 on o er this year are Australian representative bowlers Corey Wedlock, Ben Twist and Carl Healey — who were part of the five-man team that competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England.

Irish international and Commonwealth Games

silver medalist, Gary Kelly, will be taking part as well as Chris Smith, who has represented Tonga.

“We’ve got world champions, current Australian players, current internationals, plenty of players with state bowls experience from New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Victoria, ACT… so the field is red hot this year and whoever gets through and wins it, will have definitely have made their way through a pretty tough field,” says Lee, who believes it’s the most competitive line-up of bowlers he’s seen in his 25 years being involved in the Golden Eagle.

“Over its time, we’ve attracted some pretty big names, as we have again this year. I think those players realise the quality of greens that we have here at Orange City as well as the facilities in the club,” says Lee, who reckons spectators will be in for a treat over the four days of play.

“We’re getting here that week, the players who are right at the top of the sport, the ones that are on TV playing in those major events are going to be here in Orange that week and there’s plenty of local talent.. the better players in Orange are playing in the event,” he says.

The night before play begins on Monday, February 27, Orange City Bowling Club will host the Golden Eagle ‘Calcutta’ auction of competing teams.

Given the quality of bowlers attending, the bidding could be fierce, says Lee.

A new addition to the Golden Eagle this year is a gala sportsman’s dinner on Wednesday, March 1, featuring rugby league legend, Steve “Blocker” Roach as the guest speaker.

“He’ll be here with comedian Justin Karcher, doing interviews and there’ll be auction prizes, lucky door prizes, a two-course meal from the new caterers and a drinks package as well,” says Lee. “So it will be a nice meet-and-greet opportunity for people in our local club to meet with these top-line players. Also, a chance for us to recognise those sponsors and the contribution they make to the event.”

Orange City Bowling Club’s Sportsman Dinner will be held on Wednesday, March 1. Tickets are on sale now for $100 per person and can be purchased from reception.

“Fab 5” postie ride for sick kids

Five ‘fab’ friends are getting ready to pack their posties and tour the Central West, raising money to get sick kids the help they need.

The women’s only charity event, Never Late Fe-Mail Postie Bike Ride, starts on April 26, with all money raised going to Wings4kidz, a charity that supports sick children in regional NSW get transport to and from their medical appointments.

Team member, Joanne Westcott, said it’s a worthy cause, which is why the five friends decided to push themselves out of their comfort zones.

“I’ve got very good friends in Parkes, and their really good friends had a sick child, and they did a charity ride, and I thought I’m going to do that, then they said there was going to be a female one and I thought I’ve got to go in that,” Joanne said, although she’s quite honest about how little she knows about motorbikes.

“We’re definitely not bikie girls!” she admitted.

They’ve named themselves the “Fab 5” and the team aims to raise at least $5,000 with a return medical flight costing $1,000.

The riders will tour around the Central West, from Parkes, to Orange and then to Mudgee

over three days. Main roads will be avoided as they travel back, dirt roads.

“And postie bikes are apparently notoriously tricky!” team member Jane Elliott added. Events and experiences will be set up in the towns for them to enjoy, and they encourage locals to wave as they pass by.

“We’ll be meeting the children who have been on the flights in the di erent towns, so it will really put at the heart. You know, they’re doing really amazing things.”

While the ladies don’t consider themselves “bikie girls” they’re excited to try something new.

“I think just getting out and getting out of comfort zones will be exciting,” Joanne said.

“It’s a fantastic cause and it supports our district,” Jane added.

LOCAL DANCERS SHINE ON THE NATIONAL STAGE

Students from local dance school, Dance HQ, have returned to Orange with a spring in their step after some amazing results at the Showcase National Dance Championships. The largest dance event in the country, Showcase National Dance Championships attract entries from the top dance studios from across Australia and New Zealand — all competing for the title of Australia’s top studio.

Dance HQ took 40 students, ages 6-17, to the Gold Coast to attend the Championships held January 17-23.

“To attend this, we had to qualify at a smaller eisteddfod, which we were successful in securing a place for six group routines,” Dance HQ founder, Emily Goodwin said.

“This opportunity was important for us, not to win a place but to inspire our kids and expose them to something bigger.”

But Emily said they received some amazing

results, with their junior jazz group placing third, and senior jazz group finishing fifth overall.

“Our students also competed in solos where they also received incredible results!” Emily said.

“Some mentionable ones include: Laura Harrison, second overall in the junior division; Marley Braid, fifth overall in the junior division; and Eloise Harrison received fifth overall in the teen division — this basically means they received the top scores for their age group!

When not dancing, the team enjoyed exploring the Gold Coast beaches, theme parks and shopping centres, Emily said.

“This was such a rewarding experience for everyone who attended,” she said.

“It was definitely a highlight for our dancers and we look forward to seeing their newly ignited passion and drive this year!”

Donna Stedman lopped o almost 60 centimetres of her long locks on Friday, February 3, all to help raise money for local cancer patients.

It is a cause that’s close to Donna’s heart, having tragically lost her son Daniel, better known as “Blocker”, to the disease in 2020.

The ‘big chop’ took place at the Bloomfield Hall on Friday afternoon, with a fundraising barbecue and opportunity for spectators to donate to CanAssist Orange. There was even an option to buy the right to cut a “lock” of hair yourself.

“I hadn’t had it cut o at any length for 22 years,” Donna said, explaining that she had wanted to do something big to honour her son, Daniel.

The hair she said is being donated to a company in Victoria called ‘Real Fringe Hair Bands’ who provides hair bands with donated hair attached to cancer patients and people who su er from Alopecia.

“I can remember the atmosphere the first day, everyone was so excited. Orange was getting its own garden club,” recalled founding member Dulcie Gri th.

Until then, Orange’s garden lovers’ only option was to join the Molong Garden Club, but in 1992 the club was forced to close its books to new members due to growing numbers.

It was the late Jill Brough who decided that Orange could and should support a club of its own.

“Molong had a well-functioning garden club and it was only a small town,” continued Dulcie. “The ladies that startled the club — Jill Brough, Hazel Pearson and Jill Wade

— they used to go out to Molong and they thought this is ridiculous, we must get a club of our own in Orange — and that’s where it started.”

Seeking advice from Molong Garden Club founder, Mary Glasson, an advertisement was placed in the local newspaper and through the Caroole Nursery in Clinton Street, for a meeting to propose the formation of a local club.

A total of 52 people attended that first meeting in the Neighbourhood Centre, where Jill Brough was elected as President, Esther Giblin (Secretary), Gwen Wythes (Treasurer), Betty Wilson (Publicity O cer) and Loretta Blake (Tour Director). Committee

members included Fran Butler, Hazel Pearson and Pat Williams.

By August 1993, the club had 150 registered members.

“Jill Brough said at the first meeting, she was our first president and she said that it was going to be a friendly club — and it still is a friendly club,” said Dulcie

“Yes, everybody talks to everybody and we share lots of stories here,” said life member Barbara Hawke, who joined the club in its first few months.

As when it was founded, the Orange Garden Club continues to organise garden visits and tours around Australia and

internationally as well as local day trips and regularly hosting guest speakers.

“And over the years, we’ve done a lot of other activities raising funds for the Orange community. We built that arch at the entrance [to the botanic gardens] and we’ve donated trees to the gardens also chairs… we’ve donated to the orange hospital’s fairy garden,” said Barbara.

The Orange Garden Club still boast a 150-strong membership with 70–90 people attending their monthly meeting held on the first Friday of the month.

The club’s badge, designed by Fran Butler in 1993 remains the same to this very day –pressed flowers with the member’s name.

What makes your family special?

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

GOING GREEN WITHOUT THE GUILT

e have slowly been making more environmentally conscious choices. Since installing solar panels we have had to rethink our power usage. After a lifetime of using o -peak power, we are now trying to run the washing machine, dishwasher and cooking appliances during the morning or afternoon to utilise our solar power. We’d love our next car to be an electric vehicle and are currently in the process of buying an electric lawn mower. All of these have been easy choices that we’ve made with a happy, positive attitude.

But slowly, like all things in life, I’ve started to feel guilty about not doing more, or doing it “properly”.

This started on Monday afternoon when Miss Eight pulled out her lunchbox and told me she no longer wanted to take singleuse plastic to school, to save the turtles. Unfortunately, we don’t have a spectacular record of embracing sustainability in lunch boxes. Last year, we switched from yoghurt pouches to a reusable container filled with yoghurt, and then we got rid of plastic spoons and started sending metal spoons in. That was the last time I ever saw our teaspoons, and it’s the sole reason I’m currently stirring my co ee with a cake fork.

Now, her lunch box is almost completely plastic-free, save for the pretzels and pizza shapes. My problem is that I am yet to win the lotto, so like most parents, I can’t really a ord most groceries these days, particularly the bulk multipacks of chips/

Wpretzels/biscuits that cost $5 a box last year and today cost $8.50. So I buy the big packet, portion them into zip lock bags and throw one into her lunch box along with a sandwich, fruit and a capsicum (yoghurt is only eaten at home now).

So I finish my co ee, put my cup and cake fork into the dishwasher, (not laziness, it’s the better choice!) open a box of pizza shapes and pop a handful into a small container. Congratulating myself, I take several selfies for Instagram. Nailing it for once!

We head out the door and I pass my lovely neighbour who is walking his daughter to her second day of kindergarten. On the way home I see him again, this time walking home with his daughter. They pop into the house, and then he emerges ready to walk her back to school, but this time he has her backpack and he looks upset.

Darling neighbour, don’t be upset. I’ve taken Miss Eight to school without her backpack once, without her lunch box once and I’ve completely forgotten to take her to school, and driven to work with her still in the car twice. There’s so much pressure on parents today and it’s easy to succumb to it. Let the guilt go, and laugh about your stu -ups. I promise it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

I walk in the door and take one look at the box of pizza shapes and portion the rest into zip-lock bags. Because there’s a 100 per cent chance I’ll eat some for morning tea if I don’t. And until I buy more small containers later this week, this system works for us. Good enough!

Last week I enjoyed attending the High Tea launch of Orange Seniors Festival, which runs until February 12.

The festival is an opportunity to celebrate our seniors and thank them for their vitally important contribution to our communities in so many different ways. The festival offers a full program of free or discounted activities planned for seniors and their carers to enjoy, including high tea, guided walks, cooking demonstrations, music, dance and trivia, as well as a bus trip

to Canberra’s National Museum of Australia.

A highlight of the event will be the official launch of the Seniors Village Hub, whihch aims to increase wellness and reduce social isolation for older people in our community.

We had a great discussion about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. All over our region I have found a real willingness to engage and learn more about this historic moment for our country. Conversations like this are taking place all over Australia. Together we can do it!

SPRING HILL RECREATION GROUND WAR MEMORIAL

It was my pleasure to visit Spring Hill and see the amazing improvements. I’m proud that I was able to help secure vital federal funding to make it all happen.

The Spring Hill Recreation Ground is the sporting heart of Spring Hill, and it’s now beating a lot stronger following the many upgrades, including 3 phase power upgrade, planter boxes, picket fence, notice board, shelters, seating, benches, scoreboard, irrigation installation, oval upgrades, amenities and septic refurbishments.

There’s also major improvements to the War Memorial at Alf Read park to honour those who served our nation in uniform.

Congratulations to the Spring Hill Action Group (SHAG) and the Spring Hill community on a job well done. I look forward to more exciting developments.

CHARLIE RIDES FOR CHARITY

For 9-year-old Charlie Wenham from Molong, there’s nothing that quite beats a ride on his bike. So much so, that when he heard a radio ad for a cycling fundraiser to help sick kids, he begged his parents to sign him up!

This February, he’s pounding the pedals for a cause, with every kilometre he clocks raising money for the Make-AWish Foundation.

The young lad originally set out to ride 20km and

BILL WALSH HONOURED

raise $350 for the charity. Thanks to some amazing support, he’s raised more than $1,200 in the first few days!

Now, he’s doubled his ride, aiming to pedal 40km. What an absolute legend. Keep up the brilliant work, Charlie!

I was pleased to attend Orange District Court last week for the unveiling of a court room lectern honouring local barrister Bill Walsh, as well as a beautiful painting of the courthouse.

Bill was recognised for his lifetime commitment to upholding the law. He is a trailblazer for barristers working in the regions.

He started as a serving member of the NSW Police Force, and was called to the Bar in 1983, and has practised as a barrister since 1987 in various areas of the law and in the past 15 years has specialised in criminal defence work. He has acted as defence counsel in 400 jury trials before the District and Supreme Courts of New South Wales.

In 2016, Bill was appointed Barrister-in-Residence at the Centre for Law and Justice, Charles Sturt University with the title of Adjunct Associate Professor.

Congratulations Bill, on well deserved recognition for a lifetime of service to the law!

‘Squid a la riojana’

The wine region of Rioja in Northern Spain is widely known for the excellent wine that has been produced since Roman times. It was the first ever Denomination of Origin in Spain and with more than 500 vineyards, it produces some of the most desired wines in the world. In fact last year there was a Gran Reserva Rioja red named best in the world!

But the region of Rioja is also home to superb cuisine, with amazing earthy dishes full of local vegetables. In fact, you’ll find a lot of dishes named ‘a la riojana’ style: like potatoes a la riojana, cod a la riojana, or even squid a la riojana. This style of delicious sauces full of flavour and veggies is a regional cuisine worth exploring at home as it gives you a range of options that will wow your family and friends!

So, what is it? Technically, it is a base

of veggies made starting with a sofrito (garlic, onion, capsicums and tomatoes), a little bit of white wine reduction and some Spanish aromatics, cooked for a long time until everything is deliciously combined and ready for you to dip in a piece of crispy baguette.

By the way, if you don’t like squid, substitute some sliced potatoes and chorizo instead to make what is called ‘patatas a la riojana’.

Recipe: ‘Squid a la riojana’

2 squid tubes

1 onion, chopped small

3 garlic cloves, peel and chopped small

1 capsicum, chopped small

2 Tomatoes, grated

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

100 ml white wine

Salt

Black pepper

1 bay leaf

1 pinch sa ron

1 tsp sweet Pimentón

1 cup of water

To prepare the sauce:

1. In a cast-iron French oven, start by adding a little extra virgin olive oil and chopped garlic.

2. Add the chopped onion and cook at medium heat until soft and jamish looking (remember don’t be in a hurry with this process, it is the key to every single recipe).

3. Add the chopped capsicums and keep cooking until everything is soft. Add a bit of seasoning and the bay leaf.

4. Turn the heat up high and add the splash of white wine. Deglaze of the bottom of the pan and reduce well.

5. Turn to a medium heat and add the grated tomatoes, a pinch of local sa ron and a teaspoon of Spanish sweet pimentón. Combine well.

6. Add a glass of water. Put a piece of baking paper on top and the lid.

7. Keep it at a low heat or place it in the oven at 150 C for a couple of hours (until everything is super soft and delicious).

8. When the sauce is ready, pan-fry the squid and serve it on top with a good piece of crusty bread to dip in.

Enjoy!

Tips to prepare the squid:

1: Wash the squid under cold running water. Drain well.

2: Use a sharp knife and a chopping board and cut one side of the tube lengthways. Lay the tube flat, inside up (outside facing down). Clean it if necessary.

3: Score the tube in a diamond pattern (don’t cut all the way through). Then portion in two-fingers sized pieces. Store in a takeaway container adding a bit of olive oil between layers.

Cooking note: it is as simple as using a hot non-stick frypan, add a tiny bit of olive oil and desired seasoning and fry both sides until golden brown and delicious.

WADE PARK TO HOST WOMEN’S NATIONAL CRICKET LEAGUE MATCHES THIS WEEKEND

Head down to Wade Park this weekend to watch the some of the country’s best female cricketers battle it out in the Women’s National Cricket League. The NSW Breakers will take on the ACT Meteors from 10am on Friday 10 February and Sunday 12 February.

The WNCL is Australia’s women’s domestic one-day competition, comprised of seven state and territory teams. Orange’s own Phoebe Litchfield plays for the NSW Breakers and is likely to return to the Wade Park pitch to

represent the state next weekend.

Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Community Committee Chair, Cr Tammy Greenhalgh said it was great to see representative cricket matches being played at Wade Park.

“I’m thrilled Council can partner with Cricket NSW to bring this level of competition to regional areas and provide the opportunity for fans of the game to see Australia’s best female cricketers in action,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

Orange City Council has been

LITERACY PROGRAMS RETURN TO ORANGE CITY LIBRARY FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS

enhancing facilities at Wade Park for some years to support local cricket and attract first class cricket matches, most notably with the addition of the Carl Sharpe Indoor Cricket Centre in late 2020. Improvements to grandstand seating and additions such as sight screens and turf practice wickets followed. Work on replacing the field lighting and revamping the public toilets, changerooms and storage facilities is under way.

Representatives from Cricket NSW inspected Wade Park in January in preparation for the matches and were impressed with the venue. “This is testament to the hard work of our grounds staff as well as Council’s commitment to building the reputation of Wade Park as the premier cricket venue in the Central West,” Cr Greenhalgh said. Entry is free and the canteen will be open.

Family literacy programs have returned to Orange City Library as the new school term gets underway.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell said the library offered a range of free activities for parents and carers to enjoy with their babies and toddlers.

“These programs are a great way to give children a great start in life by helping develop language, literacy and numeracy skills from a young age,” Cr McDonell said.

Storytime is a one-hour session for preschool children and their carers to enjoy fun stories, songs, games and craft. Storytime is held at 11am from Tuesday to Thursday.

1,2 BOOKS is designed for older babies aged 1-2 years and their carers to read, sing and play to encourage language and literacy, fine motor skills and interaction with other children. 1,2 BOOKS is held at 10.15am on Monday and Tuesday.

Ten Minutes a Day is for children aged up to

18 months and uses nursery rhymes, action songs, fingerplays and stories to enhance language development, develop pre-literacy skills, stimulate imagination, and make reading with your child a part of your everyday routine. Ten Minutes a Day is held at 11am on Monday and 9.30am on Thursday.

Children aged 2-5 years can join Samantha Bartholomeuz from Orange Regional Conservatorium for Music for Little Ears, a morning of music designed to stimulate learning and literacy through classical music, singing, percussion, dancing and musical games. Music for Little Ears is held at 10am on Wednesday and 10.30am on Friday.

“These sessions are great fun for both children and their carers and a great way to socialise with other families at the same time,” Cr McDonell said.

To book your spot, contact Orange City Library on 6393 8132 or search for Central West Libraries on Eventbrite.

Entries open for the inaugural Spirek Art Prize

The Orange Art Society is calling for entries in its new annual art prize for figurative

The $1,000 Spirek Art Prize, is named for former Orange resident, artist and sculptor, Hank Spirek, who donated cash and artworks to the Orange Art Society prior to his departure from the Colour City.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Hank has been a working artist in five di erent countries over his long career. Well-known for his paintings of bird life, Hank’s favourite subject matter has always been the human form.

“Figurative drawing has always been important to me, and I had thought for some time to try and find a way to encourage that branch of art,” Hank said, explaining his hopes for the art prize.

Tired of seeing what he describes as an ‘expensive wallpaper’ sort of work, Hank hopes the annual prize might stir the ‘Orange art scene up a bit.’

There is a $1,000 prize pool for the inaugural Spirek Art Prize, with a $750 first prize and $250 runner-up.

Entries must be a depiction of the human form, but may be in any medium. Entry is open to everyone, for a $10 entry fee, and works must be delivered at artists’ expense to Orange Art Society by March 31.

All entries will be displayed for one month from April 9, 2023.

The winning entry will be decided by an independent judge, and their decision will be final.

For more information get in touch with the Orange Art Societyat orangeartsocietyinc@gmail.com, or you can phone David Mason on 0407 627 092 or Jodie Geach on 0410 699 478.

Silver Teams Day at Duntryleague

Golfers from Orange, Bathurst, Cowra, West Wyalong, Dubbo, Forbes, and Mudgee compete in the annual Silver Teams event at Duntryleague on Friday, February 3.

The ladies enjoyed a great day of golf played on a lush layout with some tricky pin placements and fast greens keeping the players on their toes.

Silver Teams is a stand-alone competition started by a group of five women —Norma Johnston, Heather Moore, Marg Suttor (Bathurst), Gai Gardiner and Bobbie Hawk (Dubbo) — for players from Western District Clubs.

The idea was to create a competition targeted for lower markers in the region with the lowest markers available to make up a team of eight with the best five scores to count. The Team Salver was donated in 1981. An Individual Salver was donated in 1989.

The ideals of the Silver Teams event are: experience for the longer silver markers, team spirit and good fellowship among players.

Now running for more than 40 years, Silver Teams is a competition that enables the region’s female golfers to challenge themselves and improve their skills in a high-level competition.

Duntryleague won the 2023 team event with a score of 111. The team consisted of Susan Fenwick, Jo Hunter, Sally Kay, Virginia Conran, Glenda Hodge, Margot Sullivan, Michelle Paul and Taua Holmes.

Runners up in the team event were the Dubbo team of Kim Robinson, Amanda Harris, Debbie Murray, Jan Gibson, Sue Button, Susan Orbell, Rosetta Bartlett and Chris Reardon.

The individual winner with an incredible score of 25 points was Susan Fenwick from Duntryleague. Runner-up was Jo Hunter also from Duntryleague with 24 points on a countback.

Final Results were: Duntryleague, 111; Dubbo 102, Bathurst 94, Wentworth 72, Mudgee 71, West Wyalong 68, Cowra 55 and Forbes 43.

LOLLI REDINI 48 SALE STREET, ORANGE

At a glimpse, 48 Sale Street is immediately recognisable as the celebrated hatted restaurant Lolli Redini. One of a pair of sidebyside Victorian era properties owned by the pioneering Hawke family, the address is a beacon of Orange history offered to astute investors and visionary business owners, or for future use as an elegant private residence.

Zoned B3 Commercial Core, allowing for a variety of uses, the brown brick cottage abounds in period charm with a bullnose verandah, turned timber posts, and a timber French door. Inside, the double hung sash windows with tinted glass, coloured leadlight glazing to the entrance door, and a marble fireplace are all charming hallmarks of the era.

Standing proud in the heart of the city’s restaurant precinct and just 150m from Summer Street and the CBD, the property was meticulously refurbished and established as Lolli Redini in 2001. Being sold as-is with a fully equipped commercial kitchen, “on premises” liquor licence, and furniture and fittings offered by negotiation, it’s now time for new custodians to take over the reins.

Alternatively, you could renovate and reconfigure with exciting potential for use as a family residence, two flats, medical centre, wellness centre, office space, or café to name a few (STCA).

Changing face of Orange CBD

From an ordinary country home 60 years ago to luxury second-floor apartment; a unique o ering from Williams Machin reflects the changing face of the Orange CBD.

illiams Machin are currently inviting o ers for the freestanding o ce building at 37 Sale Street, the site of their own business since the mid-1970s.

Current owner, Jim Maher, purchased the building from former Williams Machin principal David Williams in 2003. He is now looking to sell the 460 square metre property, but believes it is a unique site that presents a great opportunity for an

Winvestor or someone wanting to build a dream CBD apartment.

“I don’t think there are too many opportunities for something like this,” Jim said. “The zoning allows ‘shop top’ accommodation and that can be a full unit, all the way back on the 460 square metre block with the car parks underneath and access driveway up the side shared driveway.

“It has great potential,” continued Jim, who has had an artist prepare images to show just what could be possible.

“Take the top o this, and put another one upstairs and the views are pretty

good. A lot of sunlight up there, good comfortable living.”

It was only 60 years ago that the property at 37 Sale Street was redeveloped into a commercial premises. Up until then, it had been an ordinary residential home.

“In the 60s, the front was all developed up as a shop and then in the mid-70s that came to be the Williams Machin home,” Jim said.

“I’ve just presented it as an opportunity for someone... a nice, comfortable luxurystyle accommodation in the CBD area of Orange.”

And there’s plenty of enquiry for CBD living in Orange, according to Williams Machin licensee Tom Sheehan.

“Yeah, there is,” Tom said, pointing to the strong sales of properties in Kite and Byng Streets. “Just extraordinary, anywhere you can walk to CBD, stu has gone through the roof!

“And right here we’ve got nice Italian, we’ve got a bread shop, we’ve got the chemist, the supermarket on the corner here… I don’t think there’s too many opportunities for something like this in this area.”

It’s a changing world, but main-street retail is here to stay, says Gryllis

What to do about vacant main street shops is an issue being faced by communities the world over. But here in Orange, veteran real estate agent, Chris Gryllis, believes there are good things ahead in the local retail sector.

“The retailing world has, to a certain extent, been improving and there’s fewer vacancies now than there were, say, six months ago — and the enquiries are still

The impact of the pandemic is still being felt, he says, with some commercial premises remaining empty longer than expected and other businesses failing to compete with changing shopping habits in an online world, which only accelerated during the period of lockdown.

But there has been strong interest in retail premises these past few months, says Chris, who believes the ‘high street is here to stay, although it may look different than in years past.

a time every corner had a butcher’s shop and now they are in big supermarkets, so we live in a changing world,” says Chris.

“Having said all that I still think that personal service and belly-to-belly relationships, customer and proprietor of the business, is not old fashioned. It’s something that will stay with us forever.”

Other communities faced with long-term main street vacancies have proposed measures such as a ‘vacancy tax’ as a way to encourage landlords to keep their premises leased.

“You have to meet the market to an extent, but above all owners have to also present the premises in a better way. They have to spend some money to beautify them, to make them more inviting and thus we’ll find tenants,” says Chris.

“We have to remember that anybody who is leasing premises, he’s not there to make money for the owners only, he’s there to make money for himself.

It is very rare that an investment opportunity like this one in a country town arises. Set in the main street of Manildra, with great street frontage for passing foot traffic and easy customer parking out front, this building currently houses two successful businesses that are essential to the town. The larger of the two shop fronts currently houses a medical clinic that is leased to two separate long-term tenants who are very happy to stay on and an extra room that could be leased to another party. The butcher shop, in the smaller of the two shops, would be more than happy to sign a long-term 5 year lease with the new owner. The estimated returns on offer for an investment such as this cannot be ignored with a gross yield of 8.4%. It also has the added bonus of room to increase this by leasing the 3rd spare room in the medical centre and diversifying your income stream with up to 4 tenants. Inspections are possible by private appointment and savvy investors are encouraged to do their sums and consider this as a viable option.

ECCO host doco screening on legendary Franklin River protest

Orange Prostate Cancer Support Group News

Another year has passed and to welcome members, carers and all men who are suffering, or have suffered from, prostate cancer we invite you to our first meeting for 2023.

This will be a PCFA-sponsored (Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia) afternoon tea meeting at Eat Botanica café (located adjacent to the Botanical Gardens) at 2.30pm on Tuesday, February 21

We ask you to come along, catch up with fellow members and bring ideas for how we can continue to help members in 2023. Please RSVP Charlie on 63611830 by Friday, February 17.

Oliver Cassidy was not born in the summer of 1983, when his father, Michael, took to the waters of Tasmania’s Franklin River. Michael’s mission was to join up with protestors blockading the building of a dam that would change forever Tasmania’s last remaining wild river. After two weeks of paddling and surviving the wild river, through World Heritage-listed wilderness, Michael reached his destination.

Seven years after his father’s death, and having faced other deep personal challenges, Oliver set out to paddle the Franklin River himself. A journey that he knew he had to complete in full to survive.

The story of the paddle and footage of the original journey and the protests that echoed beyond Tasmania is the movie, Franklin.

A screening of Franklin is being hosted by Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange, (ECCO) at Odeon Cinemas on Saturday, February 25 at 7.30pm.

“The eight-year-long Franklin Campaign, led by Launceston doctor, Bob Brown, is the most significant environmental protest in Australia’s history,” said ECCO secretary, Nick King, “It led to a greater awareness of environmental issues and demonstrated that individuals, when they come together peacefully, can and do make a difference.

“It is also a film about courage to live one’s truth, to take on the elements and the healing and strength that can come from rising to challenges.”

Tickets for the only local screening of Franklin can be purchased online through FanForce. Links to the Fan-Force sales site can be found on the ECCO Orange Facebook page and website www.eccoorange.org.au

To avoid disappointment, would be film-goers are encouraged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible as there are a limited number available and they are selling fast.

LIFEandTIMES with ANGUS GIBB SHARING A MEAL:

Last weekend, our church shared dinner together for the first time this year. It is something we do on the first Sunday of every month. On what was a beautiful and warm late afternoon, we dragged out the tables and chairs and laid out the picnic rugs so we could enjoy the summer evening. It is always a great time together, and very much a ‘bring whatever’ a air so you can pile your plate with salads, sushi, pizza, lasagne, and sausages. But what makes these evenings so special? Something happens when you share a meal with someone. Food is the great equaliser. When you sit down for a meal with people, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, or where you are from. Around the table, we are all equal. Something we enjoy doing as a family is inviting people over for dinner. Around the table, we can talk openly. Around the table, we can share stories. We can laugh, cry, and hope together. Practising hospitality used to be something that happened all the time. I remember hearing about how my grandmother would always set an extra place at the table just in case someone needed a meal. When was the last time you shared a meal with someone? When was the last time you invited someone over for a meal? Often, we find that the stress of making sure the food is perfect or hoping that we have enough of everything or that

the house is tidy, is enough to turn us o from having people around for a meal. But that should not put us o opening our homes to others and sharing a meal. Despite the sometimes-stressful leadup, we always end the evening feeling encouraged by the time we have spent with people, hearing stories and learning more about them. When you read through the Gospels in the New Testament, Jesus seems to be always at a meal, leaving a meal or going to a meal. In fact, in Luke 7:34a it says:

‘The Son of Man came eating and drinking,’ which for the religious leaders at the time was something to complain about because they took issue with the fact that Jesus was eating with people they didn’t think deserved to be in his company. But why did Jesus make a big deal about sharing meals with people from all walks of life? He wanted to show who he was. He wanted to demonstrate that he cared for all people. That he came for all people. When we share a meal with others, we are in a way doing the same thing. Maybe there are people you know, friends, coworkers, neighbours, that you can invite around for a meal sometime. Organise a street party to hang out with your neighbours. This has been something we have done with our neighbours a few times a year and it is always a great time to catch up and hear how we’re all going. Even a simple gesture of inviting someone in for a cuppa goes a long way. And, if you do this, you may be surprised by what you learn.

CROSS purposes

Life and truth

WITH NICK MILHAM

I remember someone saying to me, “Life is such a DIY kind of thing!” They were trying to make an important decision. They were getting varying advice and were confused and worried about ‘doing the right thing’. Our choices are driven by what we think is important and the values we choose to live by, both of which depend on what our deep beliefs are. Lots of people often give us conflicting suggestions on priorities, values and truth. There are our families, friends, workmates, songs like Savage Garden’s ‘A rmation’, and influencers on the internet, but which (if any!) have got it right? Is there even right or wrong or best, or does it really not matter?

The God who made us says that our life choices do matter and not just for us and for now, but also to Him and for eternity. And He hasn’t left us floundering in the dark, but has given us a maker’s manual, the Bible, which reveals ultimate truth that is not just opinion. Base your choices on him and you will have life to the full. That’s what the Bible says (John 10:10).

THUMBS UP to the two men and bystanders who helped me at Lake Canobolas on the evening of Tuesday, January 31. Thank you.

THUMBS DOWN to people who ride overly loud motorbikes. No idea how much noise pollution you produce and how insecure you are.

THUMBS UP to all the happy, and always cheerful, sta at Leaf Café. This is the best place to have a co ee and catch up, and the sta are the best. Thanks, Leaf Café. Orange should have more people like this.

THUMBS UP to Dr Kate at Prince Street Medical Centre, for helping me through a tough time.

THUMBS DOWN to all those vehicle owners that use Orange main streets to show o their vehicle’s annoying ability to make as much exhaust noise as possible at all hours of day and night and at speeds above the legal limit.

THUMBS UP to Gong Thai. You clearly have the best food in town. It goes to show when an owner of another fast food establishment is eating take away from yours on a Friday night.

THUMBS DOWN to the local car wash that doesn’t provide a proper clean. What a waste of money, never even cleaned the brake dust o the wheels or the spider webs o the mirrors.

HUGE THUMBS UP to the nice person who found my wallet around Factory Espresso and handed it in to Orange Police. I took a gamble on the decision to not cancel my cards feeling that the right person would stumble across it and hand it in. Thank you whoever you are.

THUMBS UP to Max at O ceworks for organising and laminating a family tree dating back to the 1700’s. Max is always helpful, knowledgeable, polite, and professional.

THUMBS UP to the team at Pickle and Fig – we love your work!

THUMBS DOWN to the co ee shops and cafes that do not advertise the price of cakes and slices. Some customers might like a sweet treat, not a shock when the bill is received, or the evident disgust when they enquire as to the price of a cake or slice prior to ordering.

THUMBS DOWN to tradespersons who do not respond to texts or voicemails and do not answer their phones. A quick “not interested” would be appreciated.

THUMBS UP to all the reliable tradespersons who still exist.

THUMBS DOWN to the major grocery chains that sell products with red recycling packaging but have no facilities for recycling.

THUMBS UP to the lovely lady that was working at Orange Railway Station on Saturday, February 4. She was extremely helpful with my booking and everyone else that was there that morning. She had a lovely smile, and a wonderful personality, and nothing was a problem to her. It was so refreshing to see someone enjoying their job so much. The railways are very lucky to have someone like her.

THUMBS UP to the two ladies who work at OC Grounds in Orange City Centre. I think they must be the kindest ladies in Orange! I have watched them go out of their way to talk to people, listen to them, make people feel valued and liked and spread joy. Just wonderful!
