LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

RESCUE YOUR RETIREMENT Are you a retiree or nearing retirement?

I

f so, you’ve spent your entire working life hoping to get to this point… the point in your life when you can afford to stop working. And what’s happening around the world right now is the perfect catalyst to make sure you are doing everything you can to ensure your money is going to last the distance.

(Or perhaps you know someone in that boat?)

right time frame. Money can be assigned for short-term, medium-term and long-term

Next up is diversification. We all know the saying ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’

There are a few key things to get right when it comes to managing your retirement savings. It’s important to have your money in low-fee products. When we look under the hood, people are often gobsmacked by just how much they are paying in fees on their retirement savings and how much they can save by switching to a new provider (or using the lower-cost options already available to them). How you have your money invested, known as asset allocation, is of huge importance in retirement. Let me start by stressing that you don’t have to have all your money invested the same way. This simple fact is something that is often not understood by many people, and once they do understand this, then the decisionmaking process becomes a lot clearer. When it comes to how you invest your retirement savings, the key is to invest the right money in the right investments for the

greatest fear for retirees is running out of money. It might sound obvious, but not running out of money simply boils down to living within your means. But we don’t know what we don’t know, and for many retirees they can find themselves in a situation where they are spending too much and are on the path to running out of money. In some cases, people can afford to spend more and are depriving themselves of a better lifestyle, for fear of running out of money. That’s where doing financial modelling based on reasonable assumptions can empower retirees to spend a sustainable amount of money each year. The list of things above are the things that are critical to financial success in retirement. Get those things right and it becomes a lot easier to pass the ‘sleep at night test’ throughout retirement.

needs and then invested accordingly. A sound investment strategy based on some logic and reason, gives retirement savings the ability to deal with the ups and downs which will inevitably occur.

and when it comes to your retirement savings, diversification is the ultimate riskmanagement tool. It is actually very simple to implement!

I’m seeing people every week who need help with these strategies to plan for retirement and are seeking out independent advice. If you’d like to have a chat to see what you can to rescue your retirement, please get in touch.

The last thing to point out is that the

“Get your hands dirty” URGES EX-MAYOR REG

I

— JONATHAN ROE — t’s Australia’s largest community tree-planting event and, this National Tree Day — Sunday, July 31 — Orange City Council is hoping to see 800 new natives planted at Lake Canobolas.

“Have not missed a planting day in decades,” former Orange mayor and gardening enthusiast, Reg Kidd was spotted commenting on social media this past week as he urged more locals to get involved. Reg’s involvement in tree planting goes back decades, originally joining a group called “Men of Trees” after returning to Orange from university.

“This is before Landcare, and they started a chapter here in Orange… I have always been involved with what used to be called ‘Arbour Day’ and, then down the track, and became ‘Planet Ark Day’, then ‘National Tree Day’ — different names, but the same concept,” said Reg. As a councillor and then mayor, Reg continued his involvement. He said it is particularly satisfying to look back and see the tangible difference their past tree-planting efforts have made. “We’ve done planting at various parks through Glenroi, out at the Lake, the back of

Bloomfield, the back of the function centre on Bathurst Road,” Reg said.

...Having copped his fair share of criticism about what the Council should and shouldn’t do in the past, Reg said Sunday’s community planting is a way concerned locals can actually make a tangible difference...

“One that I still enjoy driving past is on Burrendong Way, the Robin Hood Hotel, just as you go past that, you will see all those beautiful natives that follow a sort of drain right through there. “That was one of the planting days and I always remember that because they’ve all done so well! There was nothing then; dead-flat paddock, pub… nothing.” Having copped his fair share of criticism about what the Council should and shouldn’t do in the past, Reg said Sunday’s community planting is a way concerned locals can actually make a tangible difference for the future.

“And even if you only plant three, four, five trees — it all helps! And it gives a good sense of community and a good sense of ownership. It makes you feel good. It’s good therapy and it’s something you can go back to later when you’re older and think, I helped plant those trees!”

“I’m a ‘talk the talk, walk the walk’ sort of person. I don’t tell other people what to do, unless I go out and do it myself,” Reg said.

Orange’s National Tree Day community planting event will be held from 10am–1pm Sunday, July 31, at Lake Canobolas in the open space on the western side of the amenities blocks. Everyone is welcome.

“A lot of people who say we should have this and we should have that; there is this great opportunity to get involved and do something and they are not there.”

“Come and get your hands dirty!” Reg implored.

Every little bit helps, Reg said, whether you can spare one hour or half a day.

“Come and get your hands dirty!” Implores former mayor Reg Kidd, as he tries to drum up numbers for the National Tree Day community “I think it is nice to take someone with you; an planting event at Lake Canobolas on Sunday, July elderly aunt or whatever it may be… my grandkids, 31. Reg is pictured here at Council tree-planting day I don’t know how many times I had them there, but back in 2018. I always thought it was really important, when they were young, to get out with me for a few hours Reg Kidd reckons he’s not missed a tree planting day in decades. planting trees,” Reg said.

Flashing amber at new crossings means “stop” Flashing amber-orange lights and enhanced warning signs have been placed by Orange City Council at the two new pedestrian crossings in Byng Street and Lords Place. Support poles, solar panels, and power boxes containing modified car batteries, were installed by contractors last Friday to warn drivers of the new crossings. Despite a series of near misses at both crossings and with many local drivers apparently unaware or unconcerned about the right-of-way of shoppers, tourists, school children and staff from local businesses on the crossings, a Council spokesperson said that the lights and enhanced signage were always intended to be installed as part of the project. Installation of the two crossings is part of Orange Council’s $15 million FutureCity

initiative to help make the central business district a more pedestrianfriendly, walkable precinct. Other features of the plan, include upgrades of McNamara Street and Lords Place, street art such as the golden spheres tracking the now-subterranean course of Blackman’s Creek, and painted doors and windows, sometimes known as trompe-l’œil, on various walls and streets around Orange. Council’s website describes FutureCity’s aims as: “to grow professional and community foot traffic during the week, and visitor and community foot traffic on the weekends. “FutureCity has come up with ways to redesign traffic and people movements (freight, passenger, cyclist and pedestrian) to ensure people can move around the city easily on foot, bikes and cars.”

Ian Gillings with his rebuilt Grand Western Lodge: “I just fell in love with the bones of the building.”

Millthorpe’s grand, old

I

Lodge’s new makeover

an Gillings has managed the financing of projects from sports stadiums to power stations and everything in between. Nothing, however, prepared him for his “retirement project”, Millthorpe’s Grand Western Lodge! Pouring “hundreds of thousands” into its refurbishment, his two-year journey is almost over with the famous old building to be soon opened as accommodation. Visually dominating the quaint tourism destination’s tiny CBD, it has been vacant for a decade following the closure of a hostel that ran for nearly 25 years in the two-storey former hotel. Seeing a for sale sign on a passing visit to the town in 2020, Ian had no idea how long the work would go on. “I’m a financial consultant for the infrastructure industry; I worked on some major projects, Olympic stadiums, Olympic villages, power stations, wind farms,” Ian said. “But this has been way harder. By that, I mean, more challenging in different

— DAVID DIXON —

ways; there’s been so much compliance, things I wouldn’t have thought of,” he said. The Lodge was built 121 years ago as prestigious hotel accommodation during the golden age of rail, mostly for those attending the then-popular ploughing demonstrations and competitions. In 1987, the building was converted into a licensed boarding house for people with disabilities for which it operated until being shut down in 2011. “Adrian had it for about 20 years. Before then, it was a private house, pre-1964, it was a Castlemaine-Toohey’s Hotel,” Ian said. “I drove past, and a sign said, ‘Open for Inspection’ and I just fell in love with the bones of the building,” he explained. Although empty for a decade, the Lodge was still, eerily, fully furnished with the beds, cupboards, dressers, and chairs of the now-departed residents, as if waiting for their return. “There was lots of brown furniture. The beds were still all made up with multi-

42

coloured bedspreads, lovely crisp, white sheets, soaps, and towels. “The owner was still very proud of the building, it was like a snapshot of another time. The old kitchen, I’ve estimated, had served 1.1 million meals… breakfast, lunch and dinner, morning and afternoon teas, and supper,” Ian said. Stripping back the fully-furnished old boarding-house during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, proved only to be first stage of the remake. “Because of COVID, there was no market for second-hand brown furniture, so most went to the tip, or the store at the tip to recycle, or whatever. “We filled 10 massive skips, there were carpets, beds, electricals, bedside stands… we kept the 1863 Dusseldorf piano because it was too heavy to get in the skip, which was good in the end. More than 400 hours was spent rebuilding it,” Ian said proudly. One pleasant surprise, however, was the building’s structural integrity. “When we stripped it all back to the

ORANGE CITY LIFE | JULY 28 — AUGUST 3, 2022

bones, there was not a crack in the walls anywhere. “Structurally, it’s magnificent, triplebrick on the outside and double-brick on the inside, it’s as solid as a large ship.” The building’s famous three-sided, 180-degree first-floor veranda, however, was another story, with builder’s braces for years propping up much of the rotten flooring and uprights. “The biggest thing was the front balcony, it had all to be pretty much replaced, we even had to get new wrought-iron casts made of the lattice. “We also put in all new electricals, plumbing, carpet, and fittings but kept the ‘conduit as feature’ conduits.” The building’s imposing and elegant brick-built façade featuring iconic keyhole windows, pictorial leadlight glazing, and central stuccoed parapet bearing the hotel’s name, have all been retained. “In many ways, it’s been a bit of a nightmare. Not so much the work, but the compliance, but I never regretted taking it on,” Ian concluded.
