Retailer Mel is taking care of business by looking after staff — DAVID DIXON — “It’s hard to get good staff,” is the age-old refrain that is increasingly applying to local hospitality and retail as the unemployment rate effectively nears zero. Long-time local retailer Melissa (Mel) Gregory hasn’t seen the jobs market so open in three decades, and it’s meaning 60-hour weeks for the hard-working owner of “Bobbies” Clothing.

all left at the end of January,” she explains. The return of students to the rigours of academic life, she adds, has left her short-handed. “There’s myself, a full-time administrator, Jess, who does all my admin and website, and I just put a trainee on… and two juniors still at school. “I also have a casual, but she has trouble getting child care,” she says, referencing another worker shortage hitting the Colour City. Mel is currently putting in extra time herself rather than cutting back opening hours or shuttering at lunchtime, an old-style practice that many local retailers are adopting, but which is impossible for the wining and dining industries. “Just through my mutual friends, they’re talking about how challenging it is... but it seems to be affecting the hospitality sector more,” she says.

Old-fashioned values of honesty, fair dealing, and flexibility — and selecting people who see the job in the long-term — are the key to keeping valued staff contented in their work and who are not looking elsewhere, she believes.

“I’m working seven days a week, it’s not putting pressure on the business, it’s putting pressure on me!”

“This is my 30th year of trading, and no, I’ve never seen it so hard to get staff… I had three uni students, but they

“The first thing is, that you have to have a good work culture,” Mel believes.

Mel says that, with full employment in the district, small business operators need to take good care of the staff they already have.

Old-fashioned fair dealing is also essential in this new job-seekers’ paradise, she adds. “The other thing is integrity, if you say you are going to do something, then do it! “That means being fair, treating everyone the same, and not letting some people get away with things that you don’t for others.”

The current climate is also definitely not the time or place for the old-school tyrant boss, Mel argues.

“In simple terms, I can’t run this business on my own. If I look after my staff, my staff will look after the business.”

“I have emotional intelligence and am not going to scream and yell at my staff, especially not reprimanding staff in front of customers, it all comes down to respect.

from the Team at Peter Fisher We recently held our joint 50th Birthday official cake cutting and Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser. We would like to say thank you to everyone who came along and enjoyed some cake and a cuppa with us. We really appreciate the very generous donations made and are very pleased to say that we raised just over $3,000 for the Cancer Council. A contribution that will help fund vital research, prevention programs and help to support those impacted by cancer. A fantastic result and one only made possible by people’s generosity and support so again we thank you. We would also like to thank Aaron and his wonderful team at Café Latte for their time and efforts in supporting our event. We certainly couldn’t have done it without you! Café Latte not only provided a great venue but their involvement made everything so easy and their coffees are truly delicious. Aaron also generously donated $1 for every cup of coffee on the day which was very much appreciated. Thank you!

Congratulations to our major prize winner Cheryl Watson! We hope that you enjoy your dining experience at Printhie Wines and would love to hear about it after you’ve been.

As Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee this week, we thought we’d take a glance back 125 years ago to another Jubilee celebration in Orange. In 1897, Queen Victoria marked 60 years on the throne, her Diamond Jubilee, and celebrations were held throughout the British Empire. Here is how Bathurst's National Advocate (Wednesday 23 June 1897) reported on Orange’s Diamond Jubilee Commemorations. AT ORANGE. Orange, Monday. A religious service to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee was held in Holy Trinity Church yesterday. Prior to the commencement of the service, there was a procession of Protestant Sunday School children, marshalled by their teachers, and headed by the Town Band, from Robertson Park to the church. Over 500 children walked and the streets were crowded with sightseers. The church was crowded a few minutes after the doors were opened, and, although provision had been made for the crush, a large number were unable to find room, and had to go away disappointed. The service which was conducted by the vicar, Rev. J. Lintott Taylor, was most impressive. Mr.

A Royal Jubilee from days gone by…

Wilcher's orchestra assisted the choir. One of the hymns was composed specially for the occasion by the vicar, who also preached an appropriate sermon. The National Anthem, sung with great vigour, concluded the proceedings. Orange, Tuesday.

The picnic arranged for the children of the district took place today. In the morning there was a procession from the Town Hall to the Association Ground, in which over 1,000 children marched, also the fire brigade, M.U, Oddfellows, Foresters, and Orange Benefit Society. Mr. Newman, M.P., also took part. Arrived

at the ground, which was decorated with flags and greenery, short addresses were delivered by the Mayor (Mr. G. de V. Pilcher), Mr. King, P.M., and Mr. Newman, M.P. The latter gentleman announced that he had procured some medals for distribution in honour of the occasion. He then proceeded to hand them to the children, but there was such a terrific rush that it was deemed advisable to postpone this part of the business until later in the day, Mr. Newman stating, amidst loud cheering, that he had a thousand of them. The medals were subsequently distributed. The crowd of children on the ground increased every minute, until at midday it was estimated there were 2,000 in the circle. All were regaled at intervals, and all kinds of games were indulged in, and it was no fault of the committee if the youngsters did not enjoy themselves to their hearts' content. Scores of ladies and gentlemen did the necessary waiting and attendance on the juveniles, and not one was left uncared for. The demonstration was an unqualified success, and the governing body express themselves as highly pleased that everything passed off without a hitch. In the afternoon the ground was visited by numerous adults, and at one time there must have been 5,000 present.
