What a glorious weekend it was in Orange! I had friends come out to visit from Sydney and it was great to get out and show them Orange at its best. It was nice too to have an extended break with the public holiday on Monday, but it was a rude shock to be back in the office on Tuesday with just hours to put this magazine all together. As always our little team somehow pulled it all together in time.

On that, we’re actually on the lookout for another writer/ photographer to join us here at OC Life. If you think you’re the person for us, please get in touch.

We hope you enjoy this little weekly offering of ours.

Thank you to our Sponsors:

Lessons learned in a life behind the lens

“I’ve had a fairly long and varied career, but it’s one that I’ve really enjoyed,” says local photographer Robert Bruce, whose professional career behind the lens spans nearly four decades.

It was Robert’s Scottish father, Ian, who inspired his interest in photography. He had been photographing his own life since his university days at Cambridge in the ‘20s.

In 1927, Ian Bruce followed a friend to Australia and went jackarooing, eventually purchasing his own rural property “Adair” west of Orange, where Robert grew up.

“Dad had kept photographing his life and to this day, we have four beautiful albums all with black and white photos,” recalls Robert, who began taking his own photographs while at boarding school.

“I got a little Kodak Duaflex camera when I was in Sydney and I used to take a few

photos around the school and that was the beginning I suppose,” says Robert.

Like his father, Robert also went jackarooing, heading out into western Queensland around Blackhall for two years, and like his father, Robert always had a camera with him.

When he set o on a ten-month trip across the European mainland and the British Isles, his adventures were all captured on film.

But it was only in 1984 when the decision was made to sell the family property that Robert decided to seriously pursue his interest in photography.

“In those days, there were two professional photographers in Orange,” recalls Robert.

“We bought a house in Summer Street and I turned one of the rooms into a dark room and started doing families and weddings.”

And over the next 40 years, Robert would go on to photograph nearly 600 weddings.

“I’ve photographed weddings in cathedrals and under trees in paddocks and they’re all good fun and I enjoyed it,” he says.

“And I used to do the wedding receptions; a lot of photographers didn’t, but I found that you got just as interesting shots afterwards when people are a bit more relaxed.”

Photographing rural properties has also been a significant part of Robert’s

career and it has taken him to South Australia and Victoria, all over NSW and as far north as Bundaberg in Queensland.

“This was in the days when the rural properties all did big glossy brochures, but that’s all gone. It’s all digital brochures now and, of course, drones, we would use helicopters or planes with a door o ,” he recalls.

Film is another passion of Robert’s. It was through his love of film and involvement in the Orange Film Society that he found himself the o cial photographer for the Sydney Film Festival for 12 years.

“It was a lovely experience; the Sydney Film Festival was amazing,” says Robert, who would take photos of actors and directors at Q&A sessions and parties throughout the festival, catching movies in between.

In 2008, Robert took a bucket-list holiday, spending eight days photographing wildlife in the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

“It was just the most wonderful experience… there were hippos and elephants, and lions and Leopards — just the most extraordinary mixture of animals!”

On his return to Orange, Robert approached the Orange Regional Gallery and they held an exhibition of about 80 stunning prints from his journey.

But for Robert, there is one career highlight that stands out above the rest and it’s one that has left a lasting impression.

In 1987, Robert was asked to accompany the influential Australian photographer Max Dupain while he was working in Orange.

It was this experience with Dupain that really taught him about using light and shadow, says Robert. And also the importance of planning, anticipating and then waiting for just the right moment.

“Max would move to an area where he knew he’d get a good photograph. It was fascinating watching him work. He would wait for the moment. He wouldn’t just sort of shoot it all,” recalls Robert.

“I was a bit like a sponge. I’d only been doing photography for four years, but it all came in and it stayed with me and I think it’s been a great help with everything, whether it be rural property or weddings or whatever.

“Getting to know where to stand…. you’ve got to anticipate what’s happening. You’ve got to be aware. Looking all the time for photos and I guess Max’s sort of sitting on my shoulder somewhere, saying, ‘There must be a photo… Oh, look. Hang on. Wait till this gets over there and click there’s something. It was a thread that went right through my photography to this day.”

It’s now been several years since Robert last photographed a wedding, but he says has been enjoying his recent “stress-free” assignments photographing gardens for the Dubbo-based Regional Lifestyle Magazine.

“I’ve had a fairly long and varied career but it’s one that I’ve really enjoyed… mainly because it’s been has been very varied,” he says

“I’ve never made a huge fortune out of photography, I don’t know whether anyone does these days, but it’s more the satisfaction as much as anything else, I think. And, you know, seeing your work put up somewhere.”

Robert is also looking forward to passing on some of the knowledge he’s accrued to a new photographer in the family.

“I’ve got a grandson at Riverview who wants to do photography next year, so I’m going to try and help him learn a few things quickly the way I did over many, many years,” says Robert.

“He’s a lovely young bloke and he just loves light and using light properly, so that’ll be fun!”

Sky Stories brings together ancient knowledge and modern science

Humans across the globe have been staring at the night sky in wonder for millennia.

Throughout recorded and unrecorded history the stars have inspired stories, been used to tell time and to guide us from place to place.

On Friday, October 13, Charles Sturt University is hosting a special community event, bringing together two di erent traditions of interpreting the night sky.

“It’s called ‘Sky Stories’ and it’s a community observation night, so a meeting of Aboriginal sky stories – what do they mean in Aboriginal culture, in Aboriginal law — and western science,” Dr Cesidio Parissi, one of the originators of the event, said.

Sky Stories is a family-friendly event that gives star-lovers of all ages the opportunity to explore celestial bodies through powerful telescopes

“We have local amateur astronomers who come and

help,” Dr Parissi said. “There’ll be probably six or seven telescopes set up and amateur astronomers with each telescope. People can ask them questions and have a look at whatever’s up there in the sky — the moon, the stars, the planets, maybe the moons of certain planets.

“And we will have a speaker who will talk about the sky stories, the Aboriginal knowledge gained from the sky, and how that related to the people and how they did work on the land, “ he continued.

“So we have sky stories being told from an Aboriginal point of view and looking at the sky from a Western science point of view, so both Aboriginal science and Western science.”

Sky Stories was first run in 2017, but this will be the first held since 2019. Covid lockdowns saw the event cancelled in 2020 and 2021, and a storm stopped the event going ahead in 2022.

Already around 300 people have booked for the free

event at the Charles Sturt University Campus.

“Another aspect of it is to invite the community to get to know our campus,” Dr Parissi said. “So linking us up here on the hill to the wider community. Come on and have a fun night with the family.”

The Sky Stories Community Observation Night 2023 will be held from 6–8pm Friday, October 13 at the Charles Sturt University’s Orange Campus.

The event is free and there will be a barbecue and bush tucker available. All you need is to bring a blanket or chair and maybe a jumper.

To help with catering people are asked to register their interest here:

DON’T RISK DIVIDING AUSTRALIANS

Dear Resident,

Our country faces real challenges, including the rising cost of living. Other important issues include national security, crime, housing, energy, infrastructure, education, health and mental health.

The upcoming referendum is also very important.

It is not simply about recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution. That could be done without tying it to a risky Voice.

This Voice proposal would be the biggest change to our Constitution in history. Enshrining in our Constitution a body for one group of Australians means permanently dividing us.

This Voice covers all areas of “Executive Government”. No issue would be beyond its reach.

It risks legal challenges. The High Court would ultimately determine its powers. Some Voice supporters are upfront in saying that this will be a first step to reparations and compensation and other radical changes.

It’s a big decision. However, the Government won’t provide basic details. We don’t know how its members would be chosen or how it would operate.

Australians are being asked to vote before these details are worked out. Once it is in the Constitution, it would be permanent. This decision affects all Australians.

If you don’t know, say no.

Regards,

FREE COOKING CLASSES

helping families to eat healthier and tastier on the cheap

A collaboration between two local chefs, FoodCare Orange and Mission Australia is helping local families eat better and healthier all without blowing the budget.

Food relief charity FoodCare has been helping feed locals experiencing financial hardship for the past ten years. Four days a week, they open the doors of their March Street supermarket o ering people the chance to grab a range of fresh and frozen foods, and household items for free or at a discounted rate.

But with the rising cost of living, there has been a huge increase in people seeking their help, says volunteer Sue Clarke.

“The numbers coming through the door have increased enormously. Earlier in the year we were seeing about 360 a month, we’re up now over 800 a month,” says Sue.

“Because there’s so many people experiencing hardship, we’re just trying to find ways that we can help them along.”

Teaming up with local chef and regular Orange City Life contributor Ruben Lopez

Mesa and former foods technologist and chef Alison Karbowiak, FoodCare has begun o ering free cooking classes to their customers, recognising that many people have limited skills in the kitchen and simply don’t know how they can make delicious, healthy meals that won’t break the bank.

“A healthy diet is actually cheaper than the normal diet that we eat with the high level of discretionary foods and fast foods,” says Alison, who is currently undertaking a Masters in Nutrition.

“It’s actually cheaper to eat a healthy diet, but people’s perception is that it’s not, that fruit and veggies are really expensive.”

For a lot of people, it’s simply not knowing what to do, not having those skills in the kitchen that’s stopping them from cooking cheap, tasty meals at home, says Alison,

“So if we can give people those skills then it accesses this amazing selection of fruit and veg which is then cheaper for them, it saves them money and the health outcomes are enormous.”

And at FoodCare, spending the minimum of eight dollars on products from their shelves means customers can get free bread, fruit and vegetables, added Sue.

The first of three planned cooking workshops took place on September 12 at the Marang Gunya Community Centre, with a focus on making the most of leftover bread. The next workshop on October 10 will look at di erent ways to use eggs: crumbing chicken schnitzel, two omelette options and making aioli from scratch.

“I guess our starting point was there’s always bread at FoodCare, so here’s a few ideas of what you can do with it,” says Alison.

“And eggs are really, really cheap protein and the options are endless. It just opens up a world of people for people to adapt to suit their flavours and tastes and it’s quick cooking as well.

The recipes and techniques taught in the cooking classes use products from the FoodCare supermarket and are made with everyday kitchen equipment. Mission Australia has come on board to fund the

program and it is hoped it will continue in 2024.

“If we can make people cook at home, that’s a win,” says Ruben.

“We work really hard to try and make fresh produce available. What this is doing is enabling them to see how easy it can be to make a healthy meal and something that’s really simple.”

Regular readers of Orange City Life will be familiar with Ruben’s zero-waste approach to cooking but he particularly has a passion for making cooking a part of day-to-day family life.

It is something he is excited to be able to share with others in these classes.

“I think the most exciting thing for me is about motivating as well to just have fun,” he says. “Understand that it’s quite fun to cook for your family, for your partner or whatever and embrace that moment, which is very important for us as human beings just to connect through food. That’s what I feel I loved the most.”

Supercars super fans get face-to-face with Peter Brock Trophy ahead of Sunday’s big race

Cars have hit the fabled Mount Panorama track today ahead of the 60th anniversary running of the Repco Bathurst 1000 this Sunday, October 8.

But last Thursday, local Supercars fans had the opportunity of a lifetime, getting face-toface with the iconic Peter Brock Trophy at a Repco Supercars Championship fan event in the Orange Civic Southcourt.

The famed trophy – awarded to the winners of the Bathurst 1000 – spent the weeks leading up to the big race going from town to town across NSW and the ACT.

Considered the greatest prize in Australian motorsport, the coveted silverware drew the local fans, who turned out to get their picture with the trophy, check out the Gen3 Supercar on display and take part in competitions to win a range of Bathurst-specific prizes.

Life-long Supercars fan Nathan Simpson was super excited after he won tickets to Sunday’s race.

The 161-lap Repco Bathurst 1000 gets underway at 11.15am this Sunday, October 8.

It was an honour to attend the unveiling of a new war memorial at Orange Cemetery this week.

The war memorial commemorates 17 World War One veterans of Orange who had no known grave or were laid to rest in unmarkable graves.

Now, their service and sacrifice will be recognised and remembered forevermore, with their names proudly inscribed on the newly established and consecrated memorial.

Thank you to researcher Sharon Jameson, the City of Orange RSL Sub-Branch, and Orange City Council for ensuring that whether they lie on foreign shores or in our own city, we will never forget the men and women who have served our nation in uniform and all that they have done for us. Lest We Forget.

PM’S VISIT NEEDS TO BE BACKED BY ACTION

In Parliament recently, I asked the Prime Minister if he would visit our disaster-hit region again and also bring the Premier with him.

The cold hard truth is that we have had nowhere near the same access to disaster funding that regions like the Northern Rivers of NSW have had. We don’t begrudge anyone any support, we simply ask for the same fair and equitable treatment.

The previous NSW Liberals and Nationals Government had four and a half months to activate this funding but failed to do so. Campaigning for a NSW election was given priority over our local residents. The current NSW Government has similarly failed to deliver this vitally-needed support.

I’m very pleased that the Prime Minister has agreed to visit and invite the Premier as well, and I again call upon equality in disaster funding without delay. Visits are important but they need to be backed up by action. Our residents should not be treated as second-class citizens.

On a more positive note, during the recent visit to our area by the NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, I asked the Minister whether he would re-assess the decision made by the previous NSW government not to deliver the $75,00 Special Disaster Grants to the Hill-End region.

It would appear that the issue is now being re-examined and reviewed, so fingers crossed for a positive result for the fire-hit Hill End district farmers.

NATIONAL POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY

Last Friday was National Police

It was a day to pause and remember the fallen officers who have served our communities with kindness, dedication and courage.

We honoured and remembered all officers who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

Thank you to the committed men and

What is the Voice?

On the 14th of October this year, Australians will be asked to have their say in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The Voice would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous Australians.

Why is the Voice necessary?

It’s hard to believe, but

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in our nation’s founding document. This wrong must be made right. The Voice provides that recognition in a meaningful way.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower

Will the Voice have the power of veto over legislation?

No. Myth busted. There is no veto. This means it would have no power to overrule Parliament, and any advice it gives would be non-binding.

Will the Voice be a third chamber of Parliament?

life expectancy, higher suicide rates, higher infant mortality rates, and worse educational outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. The gap isn’t closing, and despite well-intentioned governments, the current approach isn’t working.

In the modern, prosperous Australia of 2023, how can this be acceptable?

We need to change it up. The Voice is about listening and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Australia.

But don’t we already have Indigenous Parliamentarians?

We do, but like governments, individual parliamentarians come and go, and they represent parties. The Voice would be independent and be above partisan party politics. Having it in the Constitution provides independence, consistency, and continuity.

Is the Voice legally and Constitutionally sound?

Yes. A host of constitutional law experts and organisations have given the Voice the tick of approval as being legally and constitutionally sound, including:

• Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French

• Former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne

• Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC

• Leading constitutional law professors

• The Solicitor General of Australia

• New South Wales Bar Association

• The Law Society of New South Wales

• The Law Council of Australia

• The University of Sydney Law School

• Flinders University Law school

• The University of New South Wales

• Adelaide Law School

• University of Queensland constitutional lawyers

• Gilbert & Tobin Lawyers

Will the Voice “gum up” the Federal Government with court challenges and stop budgets, change Anzac Day, take land, ban fishing, stop nuclear-powered submarine contracts or create a seperate state?

No. Myth Busted. The Voice can’t and won’t introduce bills or run programs. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament.

No. Myth busted. Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC has described claims the Voice would lead to endless court challenges and the “gumming up” of the wheels of government as “nonsense” and “too silly for words”. It’s an advisory body that will be subject to the rules Parliament makes for it. It won’t have the power to ban anything. These wild claims are ludicrous.

Who will be on the Voice?

Members of the Voice will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and serve for a fixed period. It will include Indigenous Australians from every state and territory, the Torres Strait Islands and representatives from the regions and remote communities. It will be subject to the rules made for it by Parliament.

Would the Voice stop me digging a hole in my garden or on my farm?

No. Another whacky myth busted. It’s an advisory body folks! The Voice would not be able to force the Parliament to do anything it doesn’t want to do. The veggie garden is quite safe.

I’m Maddy Young from Orange, and I’m supporting an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Isn’t the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) the same as the Voice?

No. Not at all. Myth busted.

Unlike the proposed Voice, the NIAA is not independent of government, it’s part of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Only 22% of its staff are Indigenous. It can be abolished at the stroke of a pen. It can’t give advice to the Parliament.

Oh and the NIAA doesn’t have a $30 billion budget (another myth busted there on the way through).

Does the Voice give anyone special rights?

No. Myth busted. The Voice does not give any group any special rights. It’s an advisory body that doesn’t give any rights to anyone. This has been confirmed by eminent constitutional lawyers and former High Court judges.

Why can’t we put the rules of the Voice in the Constitution?

Because our Constitution provides the broad framework for governing our country and we leave it to our elected representatives via the Parliament to pass legislation about details such as rules.

For example, in 1901 the Constitution gave the Australian Government the power to set up a High Court and other courts. It wasn’t until 1903 that Parliament established the High Court through legislation. Then in 1975 the Parliament set up the Family Court through legislation.

Another example is that in 1901 the Constitution gave the Commonwealth the power over currency but left it to the Parliament to work out things like what the notes are and what they look like. In 1910 a law about notes was passed. Banknotes finally got issued in 1913.

The Voice will be set up by the Parliament and subject to its rules.

HISTORY TALKING with HELEN MCANULTY

Influence

From the 6th Century BC, philosophy was used to make some sense out of the world in a non-religious way, and has continued to influence Western culture ever since.

Plato was a philosopher of Ancient Greece and the founder of the first academy of higher learning in the Western world. Others have since appeared with philosophies and religions to shape our lives and our thinking.

Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Gandhi, Einstein and many more have shared their thoughts and knowledge to guide our lives.

The Oral History group did not quite reach the heights of Plato’s thinking, but it did attempt to recall the people who had an influence on the direction of their own long lives.

Dick had given the question a lot of thought and decided that, “There were a lot of people who had an influence on me all through my life, at different stages and they were all helpful for the most part. I remember teachers at school who impressed me, although a few didn’t. It was my flying instructor who shared his knowledge and experiences who stayed on my mind.”

Bruce’s father had been killed in the war and so his childhood was touched

by the sadness of that loss. “When I was 18 I worked for a childless couple who owned a dairy farm and they really made me one of the family,” he told us. “They taught me that there was much more to farming than working with your hands. He showed me how to handle the finances of the farm, fostered my interest in classical music and taught me all about carpentry. He made a big impression on me.”

“Bob Weir was a farmer and beekeeper at Glen Innes,” said John, who was the Manager of the Agricultural Research Station in his professional life. “Bob had an extraordinary appreciation of the Australian bush and I was lucky that he shared some of his knowledge with me when I spent time with him checking bee sites. He also had a commitment to family and community which certainly made him an important figure in my life.”

“The man who influenced my life had flown Halifax bombers during the war,” said Tim. He had a block of land near my parents’ property and although he had had a hard time when he was young, his philosophy and his joy of just being alive had a great effect on my young life.”

Keith had an unusual story to tell. “I think my handicap was the greatest influence on my life because, from

when I was an infant, I had sight in only one eye. Although my ambition was to be either a fireman or a policeman, my lack of vision ruled out those careers as well as a lot of others. I ended up being a successful farmer.”

When Rosemary told us that she had had five children under five, we gave a collective sigh of admiration. “I felt overwhelmed and fenced in,” she said and we nodded with understanding.” Then I met a professor from New Zealand who told me, rather to my horror, that I could be doing so much more with my children. How could I possibly do more, I wondered? In the end we formed a family education group where I learned a lot by observing my children at play and becoming much more aware of them and what was motivating them. It made all the difference.”

“It was a World War 1 Army chaplain who had been at the Somme who made a difference in my life”, said Reg. “We were a bunch of scallywags and he formed us into a group, took us to festivals and began a choir. I was breaking in horses at this time and I would ride into choir practice.”

Pat was also introduced to a choir by a teacher. “She gave me an interest in singing and music which has lasted all my life,” she told us.

“I grew up with a boy who used to stay with my grandmother in Mudgee for school holidays,” said Elma. “Over the years we went our own way and lost touch but were later reunited. His kindness and care for others left a lasting impression on me. He started the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross and his name was Ted Noffs. He was my first cousin.”

Lynne, who had a long career in nursing, had great respect for the matron at her hospital and also for a teacher who introduced her to woodwork which she has enjoyed ever since.

“I was working on a property north of Nyngan after having only farmed around Orange,” said Jeff. “It was an eye-opener to me as the country out there is so vast and sparse and I was helped by a mate who had been there all his life. He certainly made a difference to the way I saw it.”

When the question was put to Dot her reply was, “Where do I start? I’ve met so many good people in my life and have gained strength from all of them. I think the main thing is to look for the good in people and you’ll mostly learn something.”

Which I think is a very wise summing up.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

Is Your Retirement At Risk?

If you are nearing retirement or are possibly already there, then this is a must-read!

There is a period before and after retirement called the retirement risk zone… it’s a dangerous place.

It is typically considered to be the 5 years either side of retirement. This decade is when most people’s retirement savings reach their peak and start being accessed.

Often people work hard to squirrel away as much as possible in their last few years of working life. Then, once they retire, they gradually draw down on their retirement savings to fund their lifestyle.

It’s in the retirement risk zone where, if not planned for, unexpected events could derail your retirement. If there is a sharemarket crash, an emergency or an unexpected life event, the results could

be something that cause so much damage they can’t be recovered from financially.

And given the uncertainty in the world at the moment, that’s why we are talking about this right now.

That’s because it’s worse having a bad performing year when you have more money than when you have less.

As retirement savings go down over time, because they are being used to fund retirement, a bad performing year a long way into retirement will have a much smaller impact. At that point, the balance impacted is lower and there are also not as many years left to fund. It’s a similar situation a long way out from retirement, in that there are plenty of years for recovery before the money needs to be accessed.

In recent times we we’ve seen war break out in Ukraine, inflation spike, interest rates start going up and falls

in sharemarkets around the world (but then recovery). Are your retirement savings prepared to deal with things going forward? If you’re in the retirement risk zone or approaching it, don’t waste another minute… let’s get on top of things now, before you find yourself exposed!

Unfortunately, if things go badly during the retirement risk zone years, the potential fixes are often things people would rather avoid! It may mean having to delay retirement and work longer, live on less in retirement and therefore have a lesser lifestyle, or have to invest in more risky assets to try and make up the shortfall. None of these are ideal.

There are di erent ways to approach the retirement risk zone. Adjustments can be made to how retirement savings are invested in the lead up to retirement, money can be saved and invested into more conservative assets to build up a

stockpile or it could be a combination of these.

Whichever way you look at it, approaching retirement and then retiring is not something you want to do without a plan to navigate the retirement risk zone. You’ll have worked too hard to want to leave your entire retirement exposed. These are not things that need to be feared, they just need to be managed and you may only get one shot at it. Don’t leave your retirement to chance, steer clear of danger and retire on purpose! Don’t be alarmed, but now’s the time to get alert.

Smart financial decisions often come from having a sensible and well thought out financial plan. And if you need help with a plan, then let’s have a chat.

Battle for the Wood Duck returns to Spring Hill!

Old boys around the region are pulling on their socks and limbering up for the year’s most anticipated rugby match, the Barry Winnell Give Me Change for Kids Charity Fundraiser.

The (usually) annual charity match sees players from the Orange Emulators, Bathurst Old Bulls, and Spring Hill Wood Ducks meet in a friendly clash at the Spring Hill Recreation Ground.

It all came about over a beer at the Spring Hill pub, says Emulator Clive Walker.

“We were calling in there because we play a ‘golden oldies’ rugby game in Carcoar and we usually stop in at Spring Hill and have an evening meal on the way home,” explains Clive. ”And Barry said, ‘We should do something like that here.’ We were just going to do it as a game and it was his idea to do it for Give Me Five for Kids.”

With the passing of Barry Winnell in September 2019, the match was renamed and a unique wooden trophy crafted in his honour.

“One of our guys has made the ‘Wood Duck Trophy’ which we play for and it’s got an emu and a wood duck on it,” says Clive,

the wood duck being the animal mascot of Sprill Hill sporting teams.

The old boys will take to the field at 1pm on Sunday, October 15, but there is a whole day of fun planned at the Spring Hill Recreation Ground

“This year it’s going to have multiple games… we’ve hopefully got two under twelve sides and we hope to have a girls' match,” says Clive. “So it's a whole day, non-stop happening out there… We’ve got a lot of prizes donated but this year, one of the guys in the aero club has donated a joy flight around Orange as our major ra e prize.”

A bus will be leaving the Orange Emus ground at 10am Sunday October 15 for anyone who wants to head out for the day. Gates open at 10am with a gold coin or small note required for entry. Food and refreshments are available all day.

If you feel like taking part, bring your boots and shorts and have a run! Anyone aged over 35 is welcome to get in on the action. Just get in touch with Clive on 0429637298 and let him know you’re up for a game.

See you at the Spring Hill Recreation Ground on October 15!

Improving safety, health and wellbeing for Australian farmers

AgHealth Australia is a leading academic unit of the University of Sydney within the School of Rural Health in Dubbo investigating injuries and deaths occurring on farms across Australia. For over 30 years AgHealth has been leading research on Australian farms.

How do we help?

We work with partners such as Farmsafe Australia to ensure that the research we conduct is turned into practical programs to assist farmers, their workers, families and rural communities. This has led to the development of programs of work that in conjunction with industry and relevant organisations, has contributed to major reductions in the burden of injury and poor health in rural Australia.

What are our services?

Our projects that bring health and wellbeing to farmers include:

• AgrAbility Australia provides resources for farmers with disabilities. Join the peer support network on our website. Mental health and wellbeing for the farming community includes information for managing pressures on your farm.

• Managing Farm Safety is a training program that delivers the essential skills and knowledge to implement a risk management approach to farm health and safety.

• On-farm health and safety auditing services. Audits start the process of identifying gaps and assist in working

towards meeting health and safety requirements. Our auditors are fully accredited with experience and expertise in conducting farm health and safety audits across a wide range of commodity sectors.

Translating research into practice

Our most recent research found that an average of 6.5 deaths per year are from animal-related injuries, the majority being horses and cattle. Men and people aged 60 and over were also more likely to die from animal-related injuries.

Through this research, we can recommend

a range of approaches to maximise safety outcomes such as reducing risk through using alternative vehicles rather than a horse, and engineering controls such as improved cattle yard design to minimise potential contact between handlers and stock. Other outcomes include increasing competency and training to work with these potentially dangerous animals including handling, recognition of behavioural and danger signs and mechanisms to avoid, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets and chest guards.

WORK SET TO GET UNDERWAY ON GLENROI OVAL SKATE PARK

YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL AT WORK

The delivery of 600 tonnes of soil last week marks the beginning of work on the new skate park at Glenroi Oval.

The soil has come from the Clergate Road works and will be used to form the basis of the Glenroi skate park. A construction site will be established and fencing installed within the next couple of weeks. Contractors Haley Constructions are expected to begin earthworks in mid-October.

Orange City Council Sport and Recreation Policy Committee Chair, Cr Tammy Greenhalgh is looking forward to seeing the project get under way.

“This will be a great facility for skaters from the Glenroi area and across Orange, with a different design to the one at the John Lomas Skate Park,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“A new skate park will be a valuable addition to the facilities at the oval and provide an important boost for the people who use this community space.”

Work is expected to take about three months to complete, weather permitting.

The skate park features two skating zones: a streetscape-style area with mini ramps that will

People who have moved to Orange in the past year or so are welcome to attend the event, which will be held from 11am to 1pm at the Orange Botanic Gardens Function Centre.

The event is free to attend and family-friendly, with lawn games and children’s activities planned.

Cr Power welcomes new residents to the supportive Orange community.

“This event gives everyone the opportunity to meet other new residents and representatives from local hobby and sporting clubs, volunteer groups and support networks,” Cr Power said.

“People who move to the Central West are often looking for a community to belong to, and this is really something that Orange has to offer. This casual gettogether is the chance for people to hear about local

It was designed by landscape architects Enlocus following online and in-person consultation with the community and local skaters in June.

The $440,000 stage 1 is funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund ($242,000), Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Valley Operations ($110,000) and Orange City Council ($88,000).

Cadia General Manager, Mick Dewar, welcomed the commencement of work on the skate park.

“The new skate park was identified by the community as a key initiative in the upgrade of the Glenroi Oval Master Plan and it is exciting to see work starting this week.

“The new facility will provide a valuable recreational outlet for youth in the local community and we are glad to support the project through our Cadia Legacy Fund.”

An expanded skate park was included in the Glenroi Oval Master Plan, which was adopted by Orange City Council in 2020 for the enhancement and development of the area.

The second stage will be constructed when funding becomes available.

“It can be hard for people to relocate somewhere; it is important to have human connections, and this event might be the start of beautiful new friendships.”

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

Saving daylight

Like all people who have the privilege of working 9-5, I love daylight savings. Hubby who gets up for work at 4.45am isn’t as much of a fan, but even he loves the long afternoons and the warm sunny evenings of summer. Getting home in daylight and having time outside is so cup-filling after a dark, cold Orange winter.

Daylight savings is especially wonderful when you no longer have toddlers and babies on a sleep schedule. Yet again I’m thankful to be raising older children now after a decade in the under-fives trenches. My days of taping aluminium foil to windows and setting fake clocks while crying from sleep exhaustion are behind me. If you are still there, please know that this too shall end.

I gather up my ex-babies and announce long weekend plans that start with a “family breakfast adventure that we’ve never experienced before”.

“Is it one of those breakfast bu ets? Like they have in fancy restaurants in the city?” asks Miss 14, clearly displaying the childhood trauma that comes from owning a caravan and having holidays only in caravan parks. With pauper breakfast consisting of toast, cooked on a campfire, eaten while dreaming of fivestar vacations.

“Are we going – gasp! – HUNTING?” asks Miss Nine, clearly displaying the childhood trauma that comes from the time I told her we had to run into town to get duck for our soba noodle soup, and I took her to IGA with my purse, instead of Cook Park with spears. Disappointingly for Miss Nine (who brings her best sword, just in case), we head out to Whitney’s at The Remington (and her last bit of hope dissipates when we miss the Gosling Creek turn-o ) to enjoy their breakfast bu et. However, she very quickly realises that the pot full of sausages is a magical receptacle that never runs out. After toast, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, potatoes, yoghurt, fruit, granola, juice, tofu and porridge (that she made the poor kitchen sta fetch her brown sugar for), Miss Nine declares it “most funnest, best breakfast of my life!” She pauses before adding, “I mean, until I get to go actual hunting.”

Adventure number two involves a lovely surprise for hubby, who is booked into an afternoon golf comp. A wonderful surprise, where I called to book a golf cart for him, and enlisted two mini-helpers to help drive him around, much to his “delight”. I chose to pull the “work” card, and settled in at the bar with a cocktail and my laptop. I very quickly realise this is a million times better than my usual working-from-home scenario and wonder if I can just hang out here on Fridays. My writing will begin very eloquently and paint a vivid picture of spring blossoms against a green and blue backdrop of the beautiful Duntryleague course. Before slowly becoming a raucous tale of vodka, mixers and a failed attempt at tipsy putting…

Our Friday ends, with the rest of Orange, in Robertson Park for the night markets. This is our favourite night of the year and the sole reason we live walking distance to the CBD. We arrive early and immediately run into friends, as is the way. Wine in hand, we are treated to a spectacular sunset/perfect spring evening as we make our way around the stalls and soak up the last of the daylight, safe in the knowledge that next week we’ll have an hour more. A gorgeous day of Orange perfection!

Last weekend I was very happy to attend the beautiful Orange Crop Swap that takes place on the last Saturday of the month. If you like spending time in your garden and have plenty of excess produce to share, this group of people, run by Cecile Knowles, may be your community!

There were heaps of Spring goodies on o er, but there was one product that stood out above all the others: rhubarb.

But then I heard a few people talking about it. Is rhubarb a fruit or a vegetable? How do you cook it? At that moment I knew I had to help you all here.

First, let me resolve the original question! Botanically, rhubarb is a vegetable and we grow it for its edible stalk (or petiole as it is called). However, I’ve realised a lot of people think about it as a fruit due to its use in desserts like a pie, compotes, crumbles, etc.

Would you like to learn something cool about it? Rhubarb means ‘barbarian root’ and comes from the Greek rha barbaron. It was first imported from China as a medicinal plant and it wasn’t until the 18th century that we started using it as food. Mainly, because sugar became more widely available in that century.

Good news for new gardeners in town? Rhubarb is longlived and our weather is perfect for it (hooray!). It’s actually one of the most perennial of all vegetables. Plants can live for 60 years or more! Just remember to keep removing the outer stalks, leaving the centre to keep growing back. By the way, rhubarb leaves are a little bit poisonous for consumption. Please, don’t use them.

In my apprentice years, I came across di erent cooks with di erent theories about what to do with rhubarb. Should I peel it first, or should I not? Well, allow me to help you here so you can feel confident about it.

The first thing you need to think about is what would you like to do with it. I personally love to make a compote for a pie or a tart, blend it for spring and summer juices, stew it for awesome granola and yoghurt desserts, and dehydrate it to make natural “rolls ups”.

But, one preparation I love is to try and achieve the perfect garnish of the brightest red stalk perfectly cooked so that it can be used in desserts. It requires a little bit of technique, but it is ABSOLUTELY the best!

I learned it from one of my mentors, Chef Toby King at The Nun’s Pool in Cronulla NSW. I love to share it because, in my opinion, it is the best way to fully respect and enjoy this vegetable. I have used this recipe in fine-dining restaurants and in cafes and it always surprises people.

Ok? What method of cooking are we talking about Ruben?

I call it “The double-lid method”. Yep, I’m making the name up. But I’m doing so in order for you to understand what is happening and why the “two lids” are so important.

The perfect rhubarb stalks!

Step 1 Remove the leaves of rhubarb. Wash well under running water, don’t dry it. Place it on top of a chopping board and cut equal pieces of rhubarb. Take your time, it is important to get equal pieces, of the same length. Please don’t peel it!

Step 2 Turn the oven on to 160 degrees. Meanwhile, get a baking tray, and add a piece of baking paper at the bottom. Using a bowl, place the semi-wet rhubarb in it and add sugar, coating all the pieces.

Step 3 Place the sugar-coated pieces of rhubarb on the tray systematically, as if they were soldiers. All side by side, avoid placing them one on top of each other. Optional: You can add a bit of grated citrus, juice or even a bit of cinnamon, but I recommend keeping it simple at first. Just water a sugar.

Step 4 Get another piece of baking paper and cut it long enough to cover the entire tray. Make sure it is well tucked in at all the corners and sides of the pan. THIS IS YOUR FIRST LID!

Step 5 Get a long piece of foil and place it on top. Make sure all the sides and corners are well-covered so there is no evaporation of moisture. THIS IS YOUR 2ND LID!

Note: For the more savvy home cooks, this is a way of baking plus steaming at the same time! You can use this same technique to make anything soft!

Step 6 Place it in the oven. How long do I leave it for, Ruben? Well, that is going to depend on the thickness of the stalk. I recommend checking after about 5 or 10 minutes. You can pull it out and open a corner, carefully due to the steam, and check if the pieces are fully cooked or not by using a small knife. If not, return it to the oven for another 5 minutes making sure you cover all the corners of the foil lid very well.

Extra note: Always check the biggest pieces with a knife. If these are ready, the others are too. What happens if you overcook them and they get completely mushy? Don’t stress. Just blend it and you will have a beautiful compote.

Connecting the community to break the stigma

Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) along with partners invites community members and professionals to the 2023 Suicide Prevention Forum in Orange.

WNSW Primary Heath Network (WNSW PHN) invite community members and those with an interest in suicide prevention to come together on Tuesday, October 12 for the WNSW PHN Suicide Prevention Forum. The forum aims to encourage conversations, break the stigma and collaborate and learn about the future of suicide prevention in western NSW.

Suicide prevention is everybody’s business. However, all too often, people in marginalised or economically disadvantaged groups or those living in rural and remote areas find it di cult to access timely, appropriate and relevant support. Recent times have also brought on many challenges including recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, record-breaking and devastating floods in the region, and more recently the cost of living crisis, there has never been a better time to get the conversation going.

WNSW PHN aims to create a space for people to connect with each other. Bringing together approximately 300 healthcare professionals, community members with an interest in suicide prevention, a number of presenters from service providers, the Western NSW Local Health District and keynote speaker and MC, Dr Norman Swan, from ABC RN’s The Health Report, the day is an opportunity to share the latest knowledge and information, hear stories of lived experience and collaborate together to identify gaps and discuss solutions.

This event is free for all attendees however spots are strictly limited. Catering will be provided on the day.

Tickets are available by searching for “WNSW PHN Suicide Prevention Forum 2023” at www.123tix.com.au or scan the QR code.

DOUBLE THUMBS UP to the Molong Express and OC Life. Both local newspapers are focused on the community with local news, concerns and social goings-on. Both teams work so hard each week to bring the papers to us. Thank you very much.

THUMBS UP to obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Dhivya Thangavel at Highlands Healthcare. A great asset to Orange.

A comfort that lasts

WITH EBONY INMAN

What do you think of when you hear comfort?

For me, my mind immediately goes to my bed, blankets, pillows. Or maybe a cup of tea and a book. The problem with this type of comfort is that you will always have to leave it. How amazing would it be if there was a type of comfort that you didn’t have to leave? This comfort follows you to work or school and it is with you in the tough times and the easy times. This is the comfort of God.

In The Bible, God is described as “the God of all comfort, who comforts us in our troubles, so that we can comfort those in trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from Him.” He comforts us through the promises He makes in The Bible. He tells us that He will not abandon us and that he is our refuge and strength in times of trouble. We can lean on him and have comfort in the knowledge that he is in control and knows our struggles, and that he has reserved a place for us in heaven. That’s the comfort that lasts longer than a book and a cup of tea.

THUMBS UP to Tony, Dot and sta at the Lucknow Tavern/ Jones & Smith distillery. Great venue and great service and meals at our recent birthday lunch for our 35 guests. Highly recommended. Thumbs Up also to Tessa for an amazing birthday cake.

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for their quick action on removing some highly o ensive gra ti in Somerset Parkreported one day, gone the next morning. Well done!

THUMBS DOWN to those complaining about parking in Lords Place. There is a large car park literally at the end of the street. If this were Sydney, we would be glad for parking so close!

A MASSIVE THUMBS UP to all the people who donated timber, tools and unloved Furniture to the Orange Men’s Shed in Lucknow. Most of us being “old school” we love to repair items of furniture and make toys and other things. So if you have any good timber, tools or items you don’t want any more, please think of us.

THUMBS UP to Juanita, you’re a fantastic cook! And you’re also great at your day job.

BIG THUMBS UP and a big thank you to Ambos Izzy and Michael for the help and care they provided to my wife recently prior to transporting her to the base hospital.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to a young electrical business owner. This electrician although previously having done some jobs for us (at a hefty price), decided that business is so good that he need not honour another appointment or return our calls in this regard. Loyal customers are not hard to find, responsible and well-mannered electricians by all accounts are!!
