Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

I know I’ve said it a few times before that I’m often surprised we get this magazine together by our Tuesday deadline each week, but this week was… dicult. Multiple sta out for multiple days sick, an above-average workload and then a minor medical emergency requiring a child to be taken to the emergency ward hours just before deadline… but here we are again.

Congratulations to Phil Donato who has been reelected to represent Orange in the NSW Legislative Assembly. Orange electors certainly must think he is doing something right as he has increased his vote at every election and received almost 55 per cent of the rst preference on Saturday.

Easter and the school holidays are almost upon us! In this issue, you will nd a few ideas of how you can keep the kids entertained over the coming weeks. And we’ve even got a few giveaways including two family passes to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie at Odeon5, mini-golf passes thanks to Orange City Bowling Club and a colouring-in competition to win a basket of Easter eggs. Look inside for all the details!

Until next week!

DONATO ‘HUMBLED AND HONOURED AND PRIVILEGED’ TO BE RE-ELECTED ORANGE MP

ith about 75 per cent of the vote counted at time of publication, Mr Donato was the clear winner at the polls receiving just under 55 per cent of the primary vote. And in the two-candidate preferred count, Mr Donato had received 73.1 per cent of the vote to Nationals candidate Tony Milleto’s 26.9 per cent.

First elected at a by-election in 2016 and then comfortably re-elected at the 2019 NSW State Elections, Saturday’s contest was the first for Mr Donato since resigning from the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party and running as an independent.

Mr Donato said that it was a very satisfying result and that he was extremely humbled and honoured to be given the privilege to continue to represent this area for the next four years.

“It is really, really satisfying,” Mr Donato said, “and just goes to show that the style and approach in which I do things, the community is happy with. So I get some confidence out of that and that will continue

Wgoing forward.”

Without the financial backing of a party, Mr Donato ran a bare-bones grass-roots campaign, enlisting the help of family, friends and supporters during the campaign and on election day.

“We had a great team of volunteers and my staff here do a great job in the office and have been working with me for the last six or seven years since I’ve been elected and my family as well,” Mr Donato said.

“We had to organise everything ourselves, run it all ourselves, completely self-funded it myself, didn’t receive any financial or political donations at all.

“My wife, for the last six or seven weeks, was coordinating all the volunteers and rostering, all that sort of stuff… we had great support from the community as well. People came out, put their hands up, wanting to volunteer, man booths, help out as pre-poll, scrutineer.. which, you know, you can’t do without that. That’s really important.”

While Mr Donato said he expected to see a swing against the Liberal National Government at this election, even he was surprised by the result.

“A lot of people didn’t pick it. Even people from Labor, who I know, didn’t pick it was going to be as big as that or strong as that,” he said.

“I think people have had a gutful of the major parties to be honest… just the nepotism, cronyism, people have a gutful of ‘jobs for the boys’ or ‘jobs for your mates’ and so I think that leaves a level of resentment and dissatisfaction with voters and cynicism, I suppose towards a lot of the major parties.”

While the exact shape of the new Labor Government is still to be seen, Mr Donato said he has offered his congratulations to Premier Chris Minns and he looks forward to working with Labor and his crossbench colleagues in the coming four years.

“I’ve known Chris since I’ve been elected. I’ve always had a very good relationship with Chris and he’s indicated to me that their door’s always open,” Mr Donato said.

“And you know, he knows that numbers are tight and it’s in his interest to look after members of the crossbench as best they possibly can. So I think that puts us here in Orange in a very strong position going forward.”

30 years on, Rural Women’s Gathering comes back to where it all began

Women from across regional, rural and remote NSW will descend on Orange for the 30th annual Rural Women’s Gathering in August.

Hosted at Australian National Field Days, with support from the NSW Government and Rural Women’s Network, this year’s event is a return to the past in a sense as it was Orange that hosted the very first Rural Women’s Gathering in 1993.

Marg Carroll OAM, Ronnie Hazleton and Audrey Hardman OAM were all instrumental in establishing that initial gathering. Speaking with Orange City Life at the Field Days site recently, the three women were surprised but pleased to see that what they started all those years

ago continues to be of benefit to rural women.

“Ronnie and I were health workers coming back from a Victorian ‘Women on Farms’ gathering and we had this great idea, didn’t we; we thought we could do that here in New South Wales,” recalled Marg, who was the first coordinator of the NSW Rural Women’s Network.

“It was a tough thing to do then, just the two of us putting together a team.. and Audrey was part of the team obviously, and women from around the region, di erent women, and one bloke,” continued Marg, referring to former mayor Reg Kidd, is also co-chair of the 2023 event.

The demand for the initial gathering was so great, Marg said that they ended up having to cap numbers at 400 and turn another 150 people away.

“We got to 350 and the Orange Ag College was getting very jittery. Then we go to 400 and they said, ‘we just can’t feed or house any more than 400!’” Marg said.

For rural women to be able to gather and share their experiences and learn from each other was a powerful thing and it is just as important today as it was 30 years ago, she said.

“People were su ering: drought, death and depression — the dreaded ‘d’s’. So for people to come to something like the Gathering was just a revelation,” Marg said, pleased that other women have continued the legacy they began 30 years ago..

This year’s Gathering will be held in Orange at the Australian National Field Days Site, Borenore, August 25–27.

The theme for this year’s event is “30 years, still going strong and getting stronger”, a reference to the original theme “Surviving and thriving.”

100 new air-cons and counting!

Trades volunteer group

‘Fridgy’s 4 Eugowra’ hit 100-unit milestone after three-month slog

“It’s been a pretty mammoth threemonth project I can tell you!” says Bathurst TAFE teacher and Refrigeration and airconditioning mechanic, David Conyers.

In the aftermath of the flash flooding that devastated Eugowra, David was in the town assisting Rotary volunteers with a coolroom, struggling in the heat, when a local asked if he also happened to fix air-conditioners.

“And I made the mistake of saying yes!” jokes David, who was happy to help, but wasn’t expecting what saying ‘yes’ would lead to.

“I fixed his air-conditioner and then he started giving me a list of other people that were a ected,” explains.

Seeing that there was a much greater need for skills like his in the community, David formed a group ‘Fridgy’s for Eugowra’ and started calling on his contacts in the

industry to see what could be done for the people of the small township.

The response has been incredible, says David, with the volunteer group recently installing their 100th air-conditioning unit in the town — all free of charge.

“I’ve been in the trade 50 years, so I’ve got a lot of contacts. I just started speaking to donors, sponsors and people who wanted to help us out,” says David.

The Rotary District 9705 donated $45,000 to buy air-conditioners and others from Bathurst and Cowra and elsewhere have also thrown their support behind the project.

“So an incredible response as far as kindness and donations,” says David. “And it’s not just the air conditioning; people have donated whole kitchens and I’ve sent five kitchens up there… I towed every one of

them up there in a car trailer, brand-new fridges, I reckon Bathurst has given me $100,000 worth of equipment.”

But he says total donations, including the time given by more than 30 tradespeople would probably exceed $300,000.

“I reckon it will be 1000 hours by the time I finish,” says David, who has another 20 installations lined up, but is still open to helping others who need it.

“Being an elderly population a lot of people aren’t on social media, so I’m still driving around seeing air-conditioners that have been underwater that I haven’t even known about,” he says.

“So I’m stopping now and knocking on doors to see if people are aware of what we are trying to do for them. I’m still hoping to find people who need help so if there’s somebody out there that still needs

help we’ve still got systems available to help them.”

But it’s not just the Eugowra locals that are benefiting from the ‘Fridgy’ volunteers. David has been putting his TAFE apprentices to work, recycling the copper from water-damaged air-conditioners which is going to support another great cause.

“You can imagine how much scrap copper there is in 120 air-conditioners! So we bring them back, the apprentices at TAFE pull them apart for me, and the scrap copper guy comes, takes all the copper and deposits the money into an account where we’re raising money to build a trade school in Uganda.

“So one people’s woes – what’s happened to them in Eugowra – is somebody else’s joy in that we’re able to build a trade school for an orphanage in Uganda.”

CEO Walk in My Shoes left profound impact on five local business leaders

Business leaders from Orange and the central west left Orange’s Ronald McDonald house on Friday, March 24 with fresh perspectives on the work done to keep families together during di cult times.

Amy van de Ven, Katie Baddock, Simone Townsend, Jacob Cass and David Thompson spent 24 hours at Ronald McDonald House as part of an immersive experience called CEO Walk in My Shoes, which involved connecting with families and preparing meals for them after a long day at the hospital visiting their child.

For Jacob Cass, Parkes local and Centre Manager at Country Universities Centres, the experience brought back emotional memories of three previous stays, during a high-risk pregnancy, then the emergency birth of the couple’s second child, and later

for a paediatric visit with his son.

“It was absolutely a life-saving experience to know that when you came across you had somewhere to stay, you had volunteers to talk to, people understood and you’re so close to the hospital,” Jacob said.

“It was really a shining light, in an otherwise bleak situation for us – that’s why I’m here really.”

Simone Townsend, CEO of Kenny Spring Solicitors, actively fundraises for Ronald McDonald House through her business and when she heard about this fundraiser she knew she had to get involved.

Simone too feels a personal connection to the charity after her friends spent 222 days at Ronald McDonald House in Sydney, with their daughter su ering from leukaemia.

“Ronald McDonald House, for them, has been a home. Having meals cooked, and

a safe place to stay – they couldn’t have managed as well as she has if they didn’t have that kind of support,” Simone said.

Katie Baddock, owner of local Groundstone Cafe, got involved after an emotional conversation with a family dining in her cafe. They opened up about their child’s health issues and the separation the family was experiencing.

“That’s what made me look up Ronald McDonald House initially, and then I saw this experience,” Katie said, surprised at the comfort and homey vibe of the charity house.

“I didn’t have any certain expectations, but it was so nice to see how much of a home it is. It doesn’t really feel like a service – it doesn’t feel like you’re walking in a hospital, or a medical centre – it feels like you could be in someone’s lounge room or someone’s toy room. It really feels like a home away from home.”

Amy Van de Ven, owner of Quest Orange had her own experience at Ronald McDonald House as a child when her sister was unwell. Later, she helped families in need through the Quest apartments when the coronavirus pandemic a ected the charity.

“From that moment, I really realised the impact of what families have to go through,” Amy said.

“It’s important to know just how much work they do here and it’s amazing the work they do, and the way they make families feel.”

If you would like to support the work of Ronald McDonald House Central West just search online for “CEO Walk in My Shoes” and follow the links to donate.

All funds stay in Orange to provide free accommodation, meals and services for families at a time when they are struggling to deal with the reality of having a seriously ill child.

EMERGING ARTISTS ON DISPLAY AT ORANGE REGIONAL GALLERY

The exceptional talents of two emerging artists are currently on display at the Orange Regional Gallery.

Ooffically opened on Friday, March 24, the two exhibitions are Sandon GibbsO’Neill: Burruguu and Sophie Lampert: Anon.

The latest exhibition from acclaimed local artist Sandon Gibbs-O’Neill features a stunning series of paintings developed in collaboration with his grandfather, Tex Skuthorpe, a renowned Nhunggaburra artist from Nhunggal country in north-western NSW.

The title Burruguu means ‘time of creation’ in Nhunggal language. Through Burruguu, Sandon aims to pay homage to his cultural heritage and share it with the world through his art.

The Sophie Lampert: Anon exhibition is the second time a young and emerging artist has been given an opportunity to stage a show as part of ‘The Seed’ program — a partnership between Orange Regional Gallery and the National Art School (NAS) that gives newly graduated artists the chance to have their first solo art show in a public place.

“Both artists offer unique perspectives that celebrate diversity and inclusion through their art,” Orange Mayor, Councillor Jason Hamling said.

“Sophie’s soft sculptures celebrate the lives of remarkable women who had unique jobs in history. She uses pretty beads, shiny sequins, and soft velvet to make her sculptures look like they come from another world.”

“Sandon’s Burruguu paintings are inspired by traditional stories and paintings and offer a powerful reflection of the cultural richness of our community.” The exhibitions officially opened Friday, March 14 and will be on display until May 7, 2023.

Gentle, pain-free wax removal that will have you smiling ear to ear

Blocked ears? Let Heather Grainger help you get relief with her mobile micro-suction ear cleaning service, Ear 2 Ear, next visiting Orange on April 3–5.

Heather said.

Heather, a registered nurse of more than four decade’s experience, has been conducting micro-suction ear cleanings for the past six years after discovering the many advantages of the method for herself.

She founded Ear 2 Ear in October 2022, so that she could bring a mobile earcleaning service to rural areas that may not have access to this unique, safe method of ear cleaning and foreign body removal.

“It’s different to syringing where they syringe the ear wax out of the ears with water,” Heather said.

“I use a very fine glass tube, that that’s

connected to portable suction machine and so I actually suck the ear wax out. It’s very gentle, very pain-free, and very safe. It’s so much better.”

Wax build-ups can lead to physical discomfort, loss of hearing, poor performance of hearing aids, and possible ear infections, Heather said.

Many people find syringing unpleasant, but micro-suction is gentle and can be used on children as young as five.

“It’s very common for children to develop ear wax problems and then have blocked ears. Or people that use earplugs and earbuds, they are pushing the wax into their ears if they produce a lot of wax,”

“And elderly people with hearing aids; I always say if you have problems with your hearing aids, think wax because hearing aids need an open ear canal to work properly.”

She said people often think it’s their hearing aids that are playing up and spend a lot of money looking for a problem that is not there.

“But then when I look in their ear I find they are completely blocked with ear wax because every time they put in hearing aids it pushes that ear wax further into the ear canal,” Heather explained.

“So I take the wax out, put the hearing aids in and usually they have a big smile on their face because they can hear again!” Micro-suction is also used for the removal of other items that get lodged in the ear canal, such as insects, grass, lint, cotton buds and more.

The procedure is simple and straightforward. Heather will sit you in a chair, look into your ears with a magnifying headset and then essentially gently vacuum the ear wax.

Based in Tasmania, Heather is now offering a regular visiting service at the Anson Medical Centre, 298 Anson Street, Orange. Her next visit will April 3-5.

Brooke Cooper Hair Design

Experienced local hairdresser, Brooke Cooper, has opened a brand-new salon at 55a March Street where she is o ering a full range of hair services for all the family.

Recently returning to Orange from Mudgee, Brooke is loving being back in the town where she learnt her trade.

“Yeah it’s been good, it’s really nice to see familiar faces,” Brooke said. “I moved to Mudgee for just under two years and just moved back, so I just really want to let people know that I’m back and I’m welcoming former and new clients.”

Brooke has been a hairdresser for the past 17 years and said it is something she just always wanted to do.

“I’ve worked in a couple of salons in town and I have had my own business here as well,” Brooke said.

“I still love doing it as much now as I did when I first started. It’s nice when you have a part in making other people feel good.”

Brooke uses Keune hair products in her salon and stocks a range of shampoos, conditioners and other products for sale.

“I’ve used several brands of products and, for me, nothing else really compares,” she said.

“I think their colour products give the best

result, the best grey coverage, vibrancy, levels of lift, levels of deposit.

“And their products too are really nice. Often you find a brand that you like their colours, but their product range isn’t that great; I haven’t found anything in this range that I think is not good enough.”

Brooke is available for all hair services: men’s, Women’s and children’s cuts; perms; blow waves; foils; and balayage

HIPPY’s play-based fun empowers parents and builds curious ‘school-ready’ kids

As any parent will tell you, children do not come with a set of instructions, but for the past 50 HIPPY has been empowering parents around the world with the skills and confidence to take responsibility for their own children’s learning.

HIPPY, the Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters, has been operating in Australia since 1998 and in Orange since 2014. The free two-year, home-based early childhood learning and parenting program is based on the simple, but powerful idea: that parents are their children’s first teachers, so giving parents the tools and knowledge they need to support their child’s early learning will have a huge impact on their development and school experience.

“We’ve had a lot of research done on HIPPY

and they’ve found that children come to school with a lot more confidence and a lot more literacy and numeracy skills,” Orange HIPPY Coordinator, Sally Thomas said.

An early childhood teacher, Sally has been involved with HIPPY in Orange since 2014 and said it’s not only the children that benefit.

“This is really about empowering parents, giving that knowledge to parents, giving them confidence too,” she explained.

“Parents are the best advocates for their children, they know their children, they’re going to be the ones who support their children, so if you give them that early childhood knowledge — developmental knowledge — they’re on equal standing with the teacher talking the language as well.”

HIPPY program participants received fortnightly packs of workbooks and play

activities for children and their parents or carers to work through in their own time. Each activity is designed to relate to children’s developmental goals, such as language, social-emotional development, cognitive development and creativity.

“In each activity, the parent is told why we’re doing that activity,” Sally explained, adding that the ‘HIPPY Box’ given to parents includes all the resources they need.

“It’s designed to make it as easy as possible, so if you see your child floating around for five minutes, just grab the ‘HIPPY Box’ and say, ‘Let’s do an activity together’ and the parent is reassured that everything is there in the box, ready to go.”

The workbooks include instructions for each task as well as a script for parents to talk about each activity with their child. The idea is to give parents ideas and the confidence

to continue their child’s learning anywhere at any time.

But one of the strengths of HIPPY is that it employs parents who’ve been through the program as mentors to work alongside new parents and share their own knowledge and first-hand experience.

Hippy Orange is one of 100 HIPPY sites around Australia. The Brotherhood of St Laurence holds the licence to operate HIPPY in Australia and the program is fully funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services.

Hippy Orange is currently open for new enrollments for local children starting school in 2025.

To find out more, contact Sally Thomas on 63912400 or 0429653475, or email sally. thomas@livebetter.or.au

The Hay Bale Art Challenge sees sculptures primarily made out of hay using a variety of artistic resources such as paint, cardboard, fabric, wood,

Last week we experienced the once-adecade event known as the “appliance suicide pact”. This is when everything is going swimmingly until you suddenly lose multiple appliances in the one pay cycle…

It started with the loss of our dishwasher after years of honourable, MVP service. Devastating. But our children are old enough to take over washing up duties for a few days. Miss Eight is unimpressed and accuses us of literal torture. She doesn’t quite believe that we had to wash up every night when we were eight.

The next day the water tank pump quits leaving us to manually water the greenhouse. And then my laptop suddenly dies, midway through writing a complicated grant obviously. This should have all been fine, because I’d planned ahead for this 19 years ago when I married an electrician. However, he’s away for the week so I do what I do best: panic.

Miss 14 tries to explain to me that all our Google accounts are linked, so I can use any device in the house and carry on my research and grant writing easily. I demand she shows me this witchcraft, which results in her bringing up my incredibly shameful Google search history and explaining that she can, in fact, see this at any time.

“For example” she begins, “your last three Google searches were about how to access

the KFC secret menu.”

Shaking with fear about the secrets she’s bound to spill, I nod as though I knew this all along. She reads out loud:

“What is that sound in my backyard?”

“What is that noisy sound in my backyard?”

“What is that chirpy croaking noisy sound in my backyard?”

“Are frogs as slimy as they look?”

“Do frogs make good pets?”

“How many frogs can I keep as pets in NSW?”

“How to get a frog licence in NSW?”

“How to make a fake frog licence in NSW, I have a laminator?”

“Oh Mum… Shall I keep going?” asks Miss Narc, her false superiority only barely concealing her irrational fear of frogs.

“Which cupboard is the laminator in?” asks Miss Eight, keen to raise an army of frogs to do her bidding.

I send them both o to water the vegetables in the greenhouse and send a quick message to the friend group chat that gets me through the day. Less than 5 minutes later,

my beautiful best friend has arranged a loan computer for me and announces she’ll drop it o after work! She also asks if we’re okay for dinner, and I let her know about my biggest achievement for the week: discovering the KFC secret menu!

Once she arrives, we debrief over co ee as the kids watch TV and I’m once again so incredibly grateful for the friends we have in Orange. I wouldn’t have made it this far without them.

After she leaves, following 1700 “goodbye huggles” from Miss Eight, I call for an end to screen time as I now fear for the longevity of the TV and PlayStation. The kids reluctantly switch o their Netflix garbage in the lounge room, leaving me in peace.

I do a quick vacuum (it still works) and take a brief moment to pause and enjoy the quiet, clean house. This must be how “put together” mums feel regularly.

I fold the final basket of washing and head to my bedroom to put it away.

It’s here I find Miss Eight watching Netflix in my bed and see Miss 14 on TikTok in hers. I ignore this and simply put the washing down and retreat back to the quiet living space to read my book. But first I google “how to breed and sell frogs from your bathtub” just to mess with Miss 14 a bit.

HAY DRIVE FOR FIRE-HIT FARMERS

Local residents and farmers in the Hill End-region are picking up the pieces following the devastating Alpha Road Tambaroora bushfire.

It’s been a month since a lightning strike sparked a ferocious blaze which razed 18,000 hectares of farmland, destroyed 6 homes, and killed hundreds of livestock.

The bushfire was the worst blaze in NSW since the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires.

During the height of the blaze, I worked with the Cullen Bullen RFS, Clarence/Dargan Bushfire Brigade, Oberon Headquarters and the Wattle Flat-Sofala Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade - just some of the crews who worked tirelessly in dangerous conditions and rugged country to contain the blaze.

A massive thank you to all of the RFS crews and brigades who supported our region during the disaster.

Local landholders also braved the bushfire, fearless in their efforts to protect their land and assist nearby properties to get through. Legendary.

The call continues for donations of hay, grain or cash to support farmers whose once green paddocks are now black, and whose stores of feed have been destroyed.

It was heartwarming to be in Hargraves as semitrailer loads of hay were delivered to in-need farmers, thanks to a very generous $19,000 donation by Bathurst RSL Club. An extremely generous local family in Orange has also donated 200 bales.

If you would like to donate to help buy some for farmers, this is how you can do it:

If you’d like to learn more about the ‘YES’ campaign to secure an Indigenous Voice to parliament, an information night will soon be held in our region.

This will be a great opportunity to learn about the national YES campaign, have all of your question answered, and to hear about local community efforts to achieve a YES vote in the upcoming referendum.

Where: Conference Rooms 1 & 2 at Bathurst Memorial Centre, 105 William St, Bathurst.

When: 5pm-6:30 pm on Tuesday 4th April To register, visit: https://events.humanitix.com/ together-yes-community-information-session-or-bathurst/tickets

Once funds are received, the Lions Disaster Relief Co-ordinator, Anne Jones from the Geurie Lions Club, will organise the hay.

If you can spare any hay, please call Penny on 0417 629 708 who will liaise with local farmers in need.

Fortunately, the bushfires have finally been declared a disaster which is a good start as it unlocks some urgently required assistance measures. While these assistance measures will help, affected farmers are still unable to access the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants to support residents and farmers to recover from the impacts of the fires.

Recently I asked the Prime Minister in Question Time about when we can expect to see a full suite of disaster support become available - including the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants.

The Prime Minister said that the NSW Government (through the Premier) would have to request the Special Disaster Grants and they haven’t yet. He went on to say that if he did receive a request, it will be prioritised.

You can see the full question and answer on my Facebook page.

NSW ELECTION WRAP UP

As the dust on the NSW elections settled, I congratulate all of the candidates and members from our region who were elected to the NSW Parliament in the recent state election.

Elections are very tough on candidates and families and I sincerely hope they all get a break over the coming weeks.

While the government has changed, for me, the fundamental mission of making life better for the people of our regional communities remains the same. I will work constructively where I can with the new NSW Government but won’t hesitate to call them out when action is needed.

They need to start with disaster support for our region including home buy backs, local government support and flood mitigation works in the devastated Cabonne Shire plus a full suite of assistance for the Hill End area, including the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants for farmers.

For the Coalition it’s all about rebuilding.

The National Party’s return of 11 seats in this state

election is a historic low – unprecedented in the post-World War Two era. It’s the fewest seats since 1947.

As I have said previously, I grew up in a National Party family and I’ll never forget when, as a student, I heard former Nationals leader Ian Sinclair give a speech in person. It really made an impression on me. It gives me no joy to say it, but those heady days seem a world away. It just isn’t the party it used to be.

And while the counting is still continuing at the time of writing, the Liberal Party has its own issues to deal with. A return of 25 to 28 seats would mean that, while not hitting historic lows, the challenge is to regain momentum and go forward, not back in four years. Governments work best with effective oppositions.

Politics is changing and so are the regions. The lesson for all of the major parties is clear. If you want to win government, you need regional seats. Ignore the regions at your peril.

ORANGE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VISITS PARLIAMENT HOUSE!

It was fantastic to welcome Eleazar, Hannah, Ryan and Mrs Childs from Orange Christian School to Parliament last week!

As legal studies students, they were eager to learn about what Question Time looks like, the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and what happens if you cross the floor. I hope you had a great time in Canberra!

BATTLE FOR DIXONS LONG POINT CROSSING CONTINUES

the recent bushfires.

At the moment it takes about two hours and 20 minutes to drive between the two, but the most direct route is via Dixons Long Point. With no bridge, the only way across the river is a dangerous drive straight through the water. For many months of the year it is impassable - even for 4WDs.

An improved road and crossing at Dixons Long Point would drastically reduce the travel time between Orange and Mudgee. It would provide access to vehicles all year round, withstand flood events and improve connectivity between the Central West and Hunter Valley regions, which would drive economic growth and tourism in the area. We could have used it during

Substantial funding had been committed under the Roads of Strategic Importance program by the previous government. Geotech work had been carried out, and the project was even put out to tender. Together, with local Indigenous groups, we cooperatively and respectfully worked through cultural heritage concerns and addressed them to find a way forward, and there was still $27.8 million in fully allocated funding sitting there in that kitty to get the project moving. Where is it now? Why can’t any of it be used?

I urge the government to back this game-changing project for our region. Get behind Dixons Long Point! You can see the question and the PM’s response on my Facebook page.

Australian first lights up the lanes at Orange Tenpin Bowl

It’s the first of its kind ever installed in Australia: a unique, customised LED screen stretching the full width of the 16 lanes at Orange Ten Pin Bowl.

Installed by Belgium-based Bowling Media over this past weekend, the massive screen or “digital media wall” can display custom animations and videos across its full breadth, smaller personal messages for a particular lane, video clips, or even the footy!

“It's pretty endless what you can do with it,” Orange Tenpin Bowl owner Marisa Belmonte said.

“Basically, it's like a massive big tv screen I suppose – It’s quite impressive. You could be bowling and watching football or sporting events. You could do launches for businesses. We can sell advertising space if we want. We can market our own upcoming events

“And then, with our competition play, we can actually put the stats up there for a tournament, you know, who is leading and this is what he or she's been doing — it's amazing!”

Designed and built specifically for bowling centres, the digital media wall is actually composed of thousands of individual LED lights, each operating as a pixel in the giant “screen” with images and videos appearing clear and seamless to viewers at the end of the lane.

“We’re the 92nd centre in the world to have it and the first one in Australia," Marisa said, explaining that it was her son, professional bowler Jason Belmonte (winner of 31 PBA titles and a record 15 majors) who first came across the technology last year in the United States.

‘He said, this is incredible; we have to get this in orange. So he spoke to us, organised a deal with the company and it's been an eight-month process,” she said.

“We have always wanted to do things to make sure that our community here in Orange have the very best that our industry can offer and we're pretty proud of our centre and we want our locals to be proud of this centre, of this facility.

“So it's a really nice thing to know that we are bringing technology to the forefront here in our city in country NSW – It's pretty cool!”

Orange may be the first with the new technology in Australia, but already other bowling centres have been in touch to find out more about it.

“We had a couple come from Bundaberg. They travelled down specifically to see it and to speak to the developers and the owners of the company and they're very, very interested in this,” Marisa said.

“They can just see that there's so much potential there.. and we've had about three others contact us and say, ‘What do you think of it? Put us in contact with them’.”

HOME COOKING

Calaspa a rice on paella

Did you know that Spain has 17 regions subdivided into 50 provinces?

That’s why I always talk about the diversity of our cuisine, the di erent products you can find from the North to the South, the di erent methods of cooking based on the type of environment they come from, and the historical importance due to the civilisations that have inhabited that region.

You’ll always see me trying to showcase the diversity of Spanish food and the di erent techniques we have that make our gastronomy so unique. However, there is ONE question people keep asking me and want to know about here in Australia: how to make paella! So, as we are celebrating Orange Food Week 2023, allow me to put it on the record today.

First things first, they are three di erent types of recipes with rice in Spain: ‘Caldosos’ are brothy recipes usually with delicious seafood (remember you’ll see a lot of liquid with your rice); ‘melosos’ — creamy looking recipes due to the starch (conceptually like a risotto); and finally those recipes called ‘arroz seco’, which literally means ‘dry rice’. Now when I say ‘dry’ that doesn’t mean a lack of flavour, it just means there is no liquid between the grains of rice. ‘Paella Valenciana’ is one of these recipes.

Secondly, we have to talk about the type of rice we use. In the East of Spain, we have three di erent rice-growing regions that have a ‘D.O.’, a stamp of quality that the European Union gives you saying that those products are unique to a region and of really good quality. You’ll find them in Catalunya, in Valencia and in Murcia.

For those who don’t know much about rice let me clarify that size matters! In Aussie supermarkets, you’ll see long-grain (jasmine, basmati, etc) and medium-grain (arborio). And just in some, you’ll be able to find Spanish varieties like bomba or Calasparra. But they are not the only ones, in fact, there are others like Bahia, Senia, and Albufera that are really well-known and used in Spain.

I’ve been able to find Bomba and Calasparra varieties here in town. And

with those in your kitchen, you’ll be able to achieve amazing Spanish recipes full of flavour and texture. Please make sure when you buy it that they have the ‘D.O.’ sticker on the front telling you that it is a ‘Denomination of Origin’ product.

Why is it important to use the right type of rice for Spanish recipes? Because they absorb more liquid which means more flavour in your dishes. For example: one cup of long-grain rice will absorb two cups of hot liquid; one cup of medium-grain rice will absorb two-and-a-half cups of hot liquid; but one cup of Calasparra rice can absorb four-and-a-half cups of hot liquid! That’s why I always recommend using the right ingredient for the right recipe.

Now, I’d like to clarify some basics about the recipe we are going to be doing today.

First of all, the word ‘Paella’ is a Valencian word that means ‘pan’. That’s why you’ll see today that I’m sharing with you a ‘Calasparra rice on paella’. Guess what?

Not everything made on this cooking utensil can be called a paella. And it is not me who says so; it’s the regulatory organisations that are trying to define and highlight the importance of these recipes in the Valencian region as an “Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest”.

Finally, let me talk to you about the rice we are going to use today, Calasparra rice.

It comes from the fresh mountain waters around the town of Calasparra in Murcia, Southeastern Spain. This type of rice takes 30 per cent longer to mature because it is grown in cool flowing water. This makes it a denser, more absorbent grain as result, and it is perfect for absorbing the flavoursome broths for your dishes.

Believe me, once you start using it at home, you won’t go back to any other type. It’s absolutely delicious!

INGREDIENTS

200 ml extra virgin olive oil

1/2 chicken, broken down

1/2 Rabbit, broken down (if you can’t get it, substitute it with chicken).

200g flat green beans

100g butter beans

3 garlic cloves

1 tsp Spanish pimentón (sweet paprika)

1 Pinch of local sa ron

2 fresh tomatoes, grated.

400g Calasparra rice

2L boiling water/stock

Salt to taste

METHOD

1. Place the olive oil in the paella pan on high heat.

2. Once the oil starts smoking, add the chicken and cook it until you get a golden-brown colour and then remove it.

3. Add the rabbit and cook it until you get a golden-brown colour and remove it.

4. Reduce the heat and add the flat green beans and butter beans, cook for 5 minutes and set aside.

5. On low heat, cook the garlic for a minute or so.

6. Add the pimentón. Stir constantly to avoid the pimentón getting stuck to the bottom and burning.

7. Add the sa ron and keep stirring for 30 seconds.

8. Add the grated tomato and cook it with the spices and garlic until it gets brown.

9. Add the chicken, rabbit, flat beans, and butter beans and mix them together.

10. Add the rice and mix it all together.

11. Add the boiling water/stock.

12. Spread out the rice evenly (make sure everything is under the liquid). And from this point do not touch it.

13. Cook it for 18 minutes: 9 minutes on low heat and 9 minutes on high heat at the end to get the “socarrat” (crispy bottom).

14. You can finish it o by placing a couple of pieces of rosemary on top.

15. Let it rest for 5 minutes!

Orange Property MARKET Great lifestyle and extra income for $750k 170 Farnham Road Stuart Town, NSW Looking for a rural lifestyle but think it’s out of reach? This 208-acre property just minutes from the centre of Stuart Town offers privacy, productive grazing land and a charming recently renovated two-bedroom cottage all for just $750,000.

“Where can you buy 200 acres with a house on it for $750,000?” asks selling agent Scott Munro of LJ Hooker Orange.

“For mine, it’s a no-brainer. If you’re to buy a house in orange for $750,000. it would be an ordinary 1970s house. Here, we have a 200-acre paddock with a nice renovated little house on it, very well fenced, two dams and a creek running through for 750 or near o er!”

The 208 acres is productive grazing land, says Scott, that

would provide a good source of extra income.

“It’s good grazing country, hardly any trees, you should be able to earn your 25 to 30 grand a year out of cattle on this block,” he says.

“It’s a good opportunity for somebody to get into a bit of rural stu … If you’re first-time purchasers and you’ve both got a good job and a deposit, this house would be a fantastic first home if you wanted land.”

Lightly timbered and undulating, the property 170 Farnham Road Stuart Town, is well-fenced, divided into five paddocks and watered by two dams and frontage to Boduldura Creek.

The neat and tidy cottage is well maintained and tastefully renovated, with two good-sized bedrooms plus a third space that can be used as an o ce or study.

The property also includes 4,000 gallons of rainwater storage, a steel-framed 6m x 6m garage/workshop with concrete floor and a 4m x 4m skillion roof at the rear of the property o ering plenty of space for a boat, caravan or extra vehicles.

“Two minutes drive to the centre of Stuart town, half an hour to Wellington, 40 minutes to Orange, you’ve got a little school in Stuart Town, you’ve got a pub, you’ve got all your necessities,” says Scott.

“It’s a lovely little property. For mine, it’s a no-brainer.” For more information call Scott Munro at LJ Hooker Orange on 0428 650 675.

Let’s embrace the change of season!

Tips for keeping cosy indoors this autumn

Autumn is a special time of year to live in Orange. We’re spoiled with the beautiful leaves changing colour and the perfect cooler days as we ease into winter.

We generally spend more time inside during autumn and winter and there are lots of simple ways to create a cosy home you’ll enjoy being in.

Interior designer Jessica Serbutt from Cedar Lilly Orange has put together a handful of great ideas to get you started.

Front Door and Entryway: An autumnal wreath on the front door makes a welcoming entrance for you and your guests There are lots of easy tutorials online to make your own.

Living Room: Update your cushions to warmer textures and tones. Switch out lightweight throws for warmer wool throws or cashmere throws for the ultimate luxury. Use floor or table lamps rather than overhead lights for a softer mood.

Bedroom: It’s time to add a heavier doona or add warmer layers to your bed. A scented candle on your bedside table creates a space you really want to curl up in.

Kitchen: Plant some winter herbs in pots by a window for those delicious slow-cooked meals. A few new linen tea towels may inspire you to cook more!

A pot of fresh tea, Chai or hot chocolate is a great alternative on those evenings you’re not enjoying a glass of local red.

We all know the Orange can get cold, so let’s embrace the change of season! Cedar

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

FREE EVENT: Finances in your 50s – MONDAY

1 MAY

If you’re in your 50s, then you’ve likely already been working for decades. But that means you haven’t got all that long to go between now and retirement.

It’s worth pausing for a moment to ponder just how much income has passed through your hands. Do you feel you have enough to show for it?

Before you start beating yourself up, consider that for most of us, much of our working lives are spent doing two things – trying to pay o a mortgage and raising a family. Both of those things cost a lot of money and it can mean there isn’t a lot of cash left over to be doing other things like creating wealth.

Your 50s is usually the chance to really put your foot on the accelerator. Some of the

things which have chewed up so much of your income in previous decades start to become less of a financial burden. On top of that, you can start to see the finish line when it comes to your working life, and that can be a huge motivator to start preparing for the next phase of life.

In one sense, deciding you want to take action is the easy part. Knowing what to do and actually doing it are the hard parts. Things like superannuation and investing can be confusing and overwhelming, let alone trying to work out how much you will need for retirement and how to set up your finances up for this.

I’m an independent financial adviser because I want to help as many people as possible get past the fear and negative emotions that often hold them back from making decisions with

clarity and certainty. Too many people put their longer-term financial planning in the too-hard basket and decide to deal with it later.

If you want to learn more about what you can be doing in your 50s to put yourself in the strongest position for a financially secure retirement, then I’m holding a FREE ‘Finances in Your 50s’ seminar on Monday 1st May at 6.30 pm at the Orange Ex-Services Club. Get the facts, be empowered, and make the most of every dollar you earn between now and when you want to stop working.

Simply scan the QR code and book yourself a seat or give me a call on 0411 484 464.

If you’ve read this far then I hope to see you there!

If you’d like to fi nd out more about how INDEPENDENT fi nancial advice could help you manage cash fl ow, pay off the mortgage faster, get the most out of super and invest wisely, then get in touch on 0411 484 464 or head to wealthtrain.com.au. This advice may not be suitable to you because it contains general advice which does not take into consideration any of your personal circumstances. HISTORY TALKING with HELEN McANULTY

Days of Special Deliveries

The grocer’s man generally knew his customers and was familiar with their kitchens and the needs of the household.

He would often help go through your cupboards and remind you of what you had to replace and deliver the whole box at your door the next day.

Children loved to meet the baker with his basket of warm, delicious crusty bread and often little fingers had dug a hole in the middle of the loaf before it reached home.

But it was the iceman who seemed to give the most delight to the small fry.

muscular, dressed in an old singlet and shorts held together by a leather where he kept a knife, and he wore short leather boots,” she said.

When Bob Dylan protested in the 1960s that “times” were “a-changing”, he summed up the feelings of a generation.

Despite the Great Depression and World War 2, social moves and the practicalities of day-to-day living had remained fairly static over a long period, but halfway through the 20th Century, and mostly due to new inventions, mass production, and increased world trade, those old ways were about to change dramatically.

So dramatically in fact, that when I recently experienced the rather unnerving ordeal of fully automated grocery shopping, I sought to calm myself by looking at a photo of the main street taken in the late 1920s.

The tranquillity and peace reminded me that, in those days, life seemed to be considerably more serene.

Few families could afford a car, let alone two, and with many women at home for most of the day, the delivery man played a very important role in the smooth running of the community.

TIME WARP with

The milkman was mostly a very athletic fellow, who kept fit running with the milk in the early morning, quite often jumping over fences on the way.

People left the billy out, together with the money (which rarely seemed to be stolen) on the front doorstep.

You could tell that dawn was near when the clip-clop of the horse’s hooves came down the silent street.

One of our Group remembered the milkman using a horse and cart with a little low platform at the back.

“The horse knew when to stop at each house and the milkman would yodel his arrival,” he told us.

“He had big stainless steel containers in the back of the cart from which he drew the milk to pour into the billies.”

The greengrocer came with his horse and cart filled with a beautiful array of fruit and vegetables, together with a set of scales.

The butcher also had scales in his “cutting cart” where you could choose what you wanted and have it cut on the spot.

There didn’t seem to be much fuss about refrigeration or flies in “those days”.

ORANGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Today it seems unthinkable that we could exist without the fridge and freezer in our kitchens, and the long rows of frozen foods in the supermarkets, but back then most people made do with a “drip safe” and later an ice chest.

“We had a drip safe under the lucerne tree in the shade,” said another of our Group.

“It was covered with hessian which was kept wet by a dripping tray on the top.”

“My family owned an ice chest which was a wooden cabinet lined with enamel with a compartment at the top for ice,” said Jean.

“Underneath was a drip tray which would sometimes inconveniently overflow if no one remembered to empty it.”

The most important person, of course, was the iceman.

“We started at 5am to deliver the ice by horse and cart,” said Mick.

“People would leave the back door open and the money on the kitchen table for us to collect. We’d put two tonne of ice on the cart and deliver it in blocks all over the town.”

Gloria had vivid memories of the iceman when she was a child.

“He was very energetic, tanned and

“He always had a hessian bag over his shoulder on which he carried the huge block of ice.

Children loved to follow the iceman’s cart to see if any ice dropped off.

There were others too, who added excitement and colour to life in “those days”. Does anyone remember the man who drove around in his cart calling “clothes props”?

Who even remembers that clothes props were forked sticks that lifted the lines of washing away from the dirt before the days of Hills hoists?

The “night man” was scarcely mentioned in polite conversation but back in the days of unsewered backyard toilets, he was an absolute necessity, coming in the dark so stealthily and silently, to collect and replace the containers of “night soil” as we euphemistically called them.

Looking back at that time, the suburbs and country towns seem to have been full of life and activity, of warmth and neighbourliness, quite remote from the cold robotic world which threatens us today.

Colourful service station

These five children and their dog were determined to win prizes in the Total Service Station colouring in competition when it opened in September 1958. The competition was organised to celebrate the opening of the service station in Bathurst Road under the management of F E Ardill. First prize in two age groups was a tennis racquet and second prize a fiveguinea open order.

THE robus NOTES

March meeting saw the end of a successful PROBUS year and a confident beginning to 2023.

The Annual General Meeting was held and new o cers elected are: President, Ronald “Chuck” Frame; Vice president, David Cuming; Secretary, Phil Nokes; Treasurer, David Cuming; Programs, John Read; Tours, John Langford; PR Keith Rawsthorne.

At our February meeting, we were privileged to have Guest Speaker, Ray Fuller talk of his passion for Porsche cars and the incredible life and feats of Dr Ferdinand Porsche. He not only founded the Porsche car but also was General manager of Volkswagen GmbH, and worked in Germany, UK and France.

Ray began life in Narrabri but soon moved to Sydney and studied Mechanical Engineering, which became his life’s work.

In March, we heard from former Orange Mayor, Reg Kidd about his interesting life in local politics, teaching and consulting.

He gained a Commonwealth Scholarship and went to Sydney where he obtained his Dip Ed and an MA in Education. He gained Diplomas in Agriculture and Management and became Regional Head Teacher at TAFE. He is best known for his career in local politics, being elected to Council as a long-serving Councillor and then Mayor for several terms. Reg also did a Rotary Group Study Exchange tour of India.

Guest speaker on Wednesday, April 5 will be Ruth Edwards speaking on her research on the major historical citizens of Orange. (Unfortunately, Raymond Haynes who was to speak on his career in Astro Physics has been taken ill and can’t address us; get well Raymond).

The trip to Bathurst Railway Museum is set for May 14; meet at Orange Railway Station at 9.30 and carpool for transport. Entry is $10, (concession) and morning tea and lunch are available at the museum or the nearby pub.

Our next tour is on Wednesday, June 14 to Dubbo to see the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Old Dubbo Gaol if time allows. Cost will be $55 or less if we can fill the bus – invite your friends!

Annual fee remains at $50 and is due April 1. We are investigating the purchase of an EFTPOS machine to make it more convenient to pay fees and tours etc.

So, come and enjoy the FRIENDSHIP, FUN and FELLOWSHIP of Probus. Next meeting, April 4, 10am, at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club.

Thought of the day: “I want to be 18 again and ruin my life di erently; I have more exciting ideas now…”

The results are in. We have a new government here in NSW. The events of last Saturday have meant that we are entering a new season of political change. It was interesting following the election this time around. To be honest, it did not really feel like an election. I noticed the signs. I briefly read about each of our local candidates, but for someone who normally gets caught up in the moment with an election, this year it felt di erent. I did not even tune into Anthony Green to listen to him weave his analytical magic. And, if I was asked right now to give the name of our new premier, it may be a struggle. It has been interesting reading and following the local commentary on this state election and I think the reflections have been accurate. We have not seemed to care as much about it this time around. I have wondered what has led to this sense of apathy or disengagement. Despite our potential lack of engagement in this year’s state election, there is something special that happened that I wonder if we have taken for granted. When you came to vote, there were no armed guards. There was no one making sure that you voted for a particular person or party. The Australian Electoral Commission delivered its results fairly. There was no sense of rigging. There were no riots breaking out. The now ex-premier gave a wonderfully humble and gracious concession speech. It all happened with a sense of decency

and good order with a sausage sandwich on the side. While for some, the results did not go the way they would have desired, you cannot fault the process. What an incredible blessing and privilege it is to be in a nation that values the political process. We should never take this for granted. While we may slip into a sense of disengagement and apathy at times, we would do well to not let this become the norm. But as we adjust to a new government and the dust settles from the campaign and the reality of what promises will or will not be enacted, each of us have a responsibility to respect our leaders. This is something that the Bible spends some time doing. In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he writes: ‘Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God’ (Romans 13:1). For the church in Rome, they were a marginalised group who had to live under the authority of Caesar. Paul would have had no idea of the modern democratic state where the people genuinely elect their leaders. Yet despite this, he urges people to be subject to the authorities placed over them. This principle is applicable for us today as we seek to live out our lives under a new government. As we do this, let each one of us be respectful to our leaders and appreciate the blessings of the country we live in.

NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE

With Lee Cook

Now that La Niña is o cially finished and the country is drying out, it seems we are going to have a lot more fires and the smoke that goes with them. Fire is a frequent topic in the Bible. In Jesus’ time, a large garbage tip near Jerusalem was called Gehenna (which we now call “hell”). Jesus frequently warned people about ending up in hell – which is what happens when God, who is a just judge, gives evil people what they deserve.

But where do we draw the line on what is evil? Most people would agree that Genghis Khan (40 million deaths), Hitler (30 million), Mao Tse Tung (30 million) were definitely evil. Sadly, all of us share the same thinking that rejects God and prioritises ourselves. So we are all liable to God’s judgment. For us, the Bible is not primarily a message of judgment, but a message of hope and forgiveness because of the death and resurrection of Jesus. For all those who trust that Jesus died on their behalf, the promise is not one of fire but of the quenching river of life. If that’s not you, then you should find out more.

THUMBS UP to Bunnings in Orange. Upon a visit, I dropped my wallet. Thank you to all who helped in the recovery. You are all great.

ANOTHER BIG THUMBS DOWN to the dog walker in Wakeford Street who will not pick up their dog’s poop.

MANY THUMBS UP I must thank Dr. Geo Chu and his team for virtually saving my life when I was admitted with serious kidney trouble. Their care and the nursing sta at Orange Base have my undying gratitude.

A BIG THUMBS UP to Naomi and her colleagues at Spotlight Despatch Dept who helped me in a time of need. Fantastic personality and very thoughtful.

THUMBS UP to the member of the public who helped the SES when the bridge on the corner of Spring Street and Jilba Street got flooded.

THUMBS UP to Karen at Village Bakery for endeavouring to get my wallet full of cash back to me at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon on what must have been a long day.

THUMBS UP to Joel and Zac and the man I assume is their father for changing the tyre for a lady in the Summer Centre car park.

THUMBS DOWN to the inconsiderate driver of the red car who bumped their door on my car and left a red paint dent on my vehicle in Bathurst recently. Next time be more careful around other people’s cars when opening your door!

A BIG THUMBS UP to Orange Health Service, from the kitchen sta right up to the doctors. They did an amazing job. One happy patient.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Laverty Pathology in Millthorpe. Debbie always makes you feel relaxed and greets everyone as a friend with a huge smile, she is gentle and you hardly know you have had a blood test. Also the Minties and Fantails she shares with everyone.

A BIG THUMBS UP to George from the Orange Cellars. You have done a great job over the years and you will be missed. Good luck with all your future plans. Job well done.

THUMBS DOWN to those motorists who treat our 50km zone in Cargo as a speedway. No thought is given to kids who use and cross the busy road.

THUMBS UP to The Good Enough Parent, Emily Thompson. I absolutely love reading your column each week. FYI, Cafe Connect in Prince Street has indoor play equipment and room for prams.

THUMBS UP and sincere congratulations to Jason Belmonte on his recent win at the Tournament of Champions in Ohio, USA. Just goes to show that if you keep trying anything is possible. Well done to Jason on coming back from behind to scoop us the title.

A MASSIVE THUMBS DOWN to the rude person who reversed into my parked car in McNamara Lane on Friday afternoon, while I was sitting in my car. Surprisingly and thankfully there was no damage, not that you would know, because you rudely drove o leaving the scene. Own your mistakes, don’t run away from them
