Take the stage at Orange Eisteddfod

from the

with Bob Holland

Hi friends!

What a fascinating week it’s been! The election has become farcical, our dam runneth over and at last we can get back into our gardens, there’s talk of another major match fixing scandal in international cricket, Hoges has been confined to Australia through tax avoidance issues and so it goes on. It’s all happening as they say. It’s the same here at Photo News. We are just so busy with so many things happening at the moment it isn’t funny. Good but not funny.

Picture by CHRIS BENNETTS The Orange eisTeddfOd is currently running with a host of talent performing entertaining acts from a range of disciplines. The eisteddfod is in its 31st year of running and has grown from a small event that ran over ten days to the massive five week gala event we see today. some of the categories include Vocal & instrumental, dance, speech, drama, and school Choirs. The eisteddfod will conclude with a grand concert on the 18th september which will feature scholarship winners and popular acts. The Orange eisteddfod is on at the Civic theatre, and tickets for shows are available at Ticketek. The organisers of the eisteddfod wish to thank the sponsors and volunteers who work tirelessly to make the event run smoothly.

We haven’t made a song and dance about it but would you believe that this issue of Photo News signifies three years in Orange. That’s right...it’s our 3rd Birthday today. Quite a milestone but would you believe we’ve been so busy that it just crept up on us. We virtually forgot it was our birthday. I talked it around with my staff and we’ve decided to wait until our 5th Birthday then do something BIG. Sounds like a plan to me. This week also see’s our Spring Shopping Spree kick off. It’ll run right through Spring and we’ll be giving away $10,000 worth of prizes between now and December 2. Details will appear in Photo News each week. Today (September 2) is also the start of something quite unique, a new radio Shopping Show on Radio 2EL 1089AM and we’re the sponsors. Each Thursday between 1 and 1.30pm myself and Tony Wright from 2EL will present half an hour of shopping deals, discounts and discoveries. I think it could be a lot of fun for us and very beneficial to local businesses and shoppers alike. Tune in today at 1 o’clock for the first show. Our new website is starting to come into play much more as we continue to improve it and we’re also helping the Rotary Club of Orange Calare launch a new local Vocational and Community Awards program. And next week the September issue of our popular Fifty Plus Extra will appear in Photo News, something for everyone to look forward to, not just those over 50.

Until next week, cheers and go well!  bob@cwpn.com.au

Feels like...

3

By BoB Holland One of things that intrigues me in life is the way we sometimes accept things without even thinking whether they are feasible or not. For example, how often have we heard scientists claim a discovery dates back 5 or 10 million years? Crikey, do we really think they could be anywhere near that accurate with such claims when most of us have enough trouble wrapping our minds around life in the 2010 years we know about. Chances are they could be a million or more years out and we wouldn’t know it, yet we seem to accept such claims as credible. Funny isn’t it? Here’s another one. We often hear a weather report say something like the temperature is 5.2 degrees but it feels like 1.8 degrees. Does anyone else wonder how they arrive at the ‘feels like’ temperature and why they say it at all? Call me strange if you like but I find that quite curious and wonder what the point is. The temperature is either this or that or it’s not. If we’re going to apply a ‘feels like’ approach to how we view the weather, one wonders what next? If we ever get to the stage where important decisions are made on what circumstances ‘feel like’ rather than reality, it could be concerning. Sounds silly now but think about it.

PICTURE: CENTRAL WEST PHOTO NEWS/CHRIS BENNETTS

we respond to things according to how we feel not how they actually are

This week’s Page 3 Girl is Kimberly Belmonte; she is busy at the moment with preparations for her store opening! I am.... part owner of ‘Belle Armoire’ Boutique (opening soon!) My dream career is... I’m doing it right now! Many people don’t know that I...once went on ‘Wheel of Fortune’ When I was young I wanted to... be an actress My favourite book, movie and song are... The Persimmon Tree, Moulin Rouge,

and anything by the Beatles The last time I laughed so much I cried was... when Bec was giving my email address over the phone and mispronounced a certain word! My idea of the perfect date is… a picnic on a sunny day with a delicious cheese plate It annoys me when... I lose at board games I love it when...Aria (my baby) does something new for the first time and is so proud of herself I’m really scared of... failure In the movie of my life I would be played by... Audrey, if she was still around

My wife and I were discussing how our business is travelling at the moment and this idea of ‘feels like’ came up. In reality, it’s going quite well but sometimes it doesn’t ‘feel like’ it is. That’s a lot like life isn’t it? Take the economy, we don’t know for sure how we’re really travelling but we respond to what we feel is happening. Those who feel things are bad hold back on their spending whilst those who think things are OK go along business as usual. In our personal circumstances too we tend to respond to things according to how we feel not how they actually are. Another common ‘feeling’ we experience is when someone says something bad about us. Whether it’s true or not, we often let this dominate our thoughts more than we should. It’s a known fact that if a hundred people say you’re a good person and just one says you’re not, that one person’s comment is the one you’ll dwell on. So if there’s a lesson in all this, maybe it’s this. Next time you’re feeling ordinary about anything, ask yourself if what you’re feeling is something real or something imagined and then move on accordingly. And by the way, I emailed the weather bureau asking how they determine ‘feels like’ temperatures. Their answer was short and sweet but hardly helpful, quote “a combination of the heat index and wind chill factor”.

Call for crutches! We want your crutches: Rhiannon Walls with some of the ‘crutch-a-thon’ participants.

By CHRIS BENNETTS Three Orange yOuTh groups have developed a unique way to raise money and collect crutches for a medical mission in the southwest province of China. They will be holding a ‘Crutch-a-thon’ at the Canobolas rural Technology high School hall on September 10, which will involve using collected crutches to complete laps of the basketball court. Organiser of the event, rhiannon Walls, said the fund raiser will be beneficial in a number of ways “The event has a threefold purpose; we want people to return any un-used crutches they may have lying around, we will

then send those crutches along with the money raised to ‘Bless China’ which is a medical mission in the southwest province of yunnan, China.” ‘Bless China’ provides physical therapy and prosthetic limbs at no charge to the poorest patients in China. “There is a great need for this kind of support in China, they have lots of accidents both in the workplace and on the roads, and they don’t have Oh and S like we do.” rhiannon explained. roughly 35 kids are busy collecting sponsorship for the crutch-a-thon, with donations being given for every lap or kilometre they complete. “The crutch-a-thon will start at 6pm and go for five

hours, so they will be able to cover a bit of distance in that time!” “We also want to raise the kid’s awareness about those who are less fortunate than themselves.” rhiannon is hoping it will become an annual event “Hopefully it will become the great Orange crutch– muster” she laughed. “There are roughly 500 pairs of crutches missing in the region and we are aiming to retrieve about 100 pairs of these for our crutch-a-thon.” you can drop any crutches you have lying around into ‘On the Move Physiotherapy’ at 97 Byng Street, weekdays between 9am and 4pm.

Leadership with a difference By Bruce Bennett By the time this goes to print democracy will have once again imposed its authority. We will have a new government and we will have put that new government in power. We rule and we think it’s great. Winston Churchill was a little more dubious—he reckoned “the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.” But however imperfect democracy may be it is pretty obvious why it is so highly valued. It is because political systems like monarchies and dictatorships are often characterised by the abuse of political power. Human power has a sad history of abuse even among those democratically elected. “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (Lord Acton). All this makes Jesus stand out as unique. There is no one like him. He demonstrated extraordinary power over every part of life, even life itself. Yet at the moment that this was most obvious (after raising a dead man to life), he used his power to serve us, not use us. He died that we might be forgiven and rose from the dead so that we could too. Read about it in the Bible in John chapters 18–21. It’s absolutely amazing!

11. The ball will include several auctions of memorabilia and tickets are still available for it through the Orange Ex-Services Club. Another fundraising event will be Coffee Club’s Cuppa for kids on Thursday, September 9, where if you buy a hot drink between 10am and 12pm, a dollar from each sale will go to Heart kids. Coffee Club will be all decorated on the day so make sure you head in to buy a drink and support this very worthy cause. Donation tins will also be available around the cafe. The severity of CHD can range from a hole in the heart to a highly complex combination of conditions, so don’t forget to donate to help fund research into heart disease. The funds that are raised in the Central West will continue to support Heart Kids in regional areas, so this cause is definitely very close to home!

DID You knoW that six babies each day in Australia are diagnosed with heart disease? That means about 1 in 100 babies are born with heart disease. There are literally hundreds of children in the Central West with a heart defect, yet it remains as one of the lesser known diseases. The organisation ‘Heart kids’ are trying to do something about this by aiming to raise awareness and funds to support families who have a child with heart disease, reduce the incidence of Childhood Heart Disease (CHD) and decrease the mortality rates for CHD. During September there will be several events going on in orange as part of ‘Have a Cuppa for kids’, including a Tiny Tickers Ball on Saturday, September

This one’s not quite a piece of cake! LocaL cake DecoraTor, Vanessa Wardle, has recently achieved the highest accolade for cake decorating in NSW by taking out the ‘Guild Gold’ – the best exhibit over all classes at the cake art challenge 2010 competition in Sydney. By the look of this cake that she decorated, we can understand why! The cake art challenge is a bi-annual contest held by The cake Decorator’s Guild of NSW. It’s a highly competitive and intense competition with cake decoration artists from all over NSW showing off their finely honed skills in 24 classes of competition! The win was a surprise for Vanessa, who has only been cake decorating for three years, as the winners usually have countless years of experience in the field. Vanessa also won the Bridal elegance Section which involved a two-tiered, elegantly modern wedding cake that had to include hand piped royal icing lace work. Vanessa’s stunning work of art was a black and white fondant covered cake featuring an elegant bouquet of white phalaenopsis orchids, highlighted with tiny black berries and silver and lime green leaves. It was encircled with piped filigree lace shards standing 19cm tall and studded with hand-made black disco diamonds. (That’s right; absolutely everything in this cake is made with cake decorating ingredients by Vanessa!) Vanessa’s tenacity combined with her technical and artistic skill, together with her aim to always ‘do her best,’ shone through in this top level competition. “I’m lucky because not many people find their passion,” Vanessa said. “The first roses I made looked like bunched up cabbages! To win this award is a huge honour!” Well done Vanessa, what a spectacular achievement!

A masterpiece: Orange resident Vanessa Wardle’s cake which recently took out the best exhibit at the Cake Art Challenge 2010 competition in Sydney

If you are wondering what the new road markings around town are, they are called ‘Dragons teeth’ and they are here to warn you. The Triangular road markings will be painted at the start of each school zone in NSW over the next two years. ‘Dragon’s Teeth’ further increase the visibility of school zones for motorists and provide a constant reinforcement to slow down to 40 km/h around schools between 8am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm till 4pm. ‘Dragon’s teeth’ are already used internationally and will be rolled out at all of NSW’s 10,000 school zones by the end of 2011.

Suma Park Dam finally reached the big 100% last week and Photo News caught this snap of Mayor John Davis and Cr Chris Gryllis at Suma Park about an hour after the water had started flowing over the dam wall. John Davis was all smiles about the dam levels that have been his main concern over the past few years. “It’s absolutely fantastic – this is unbelievable,” John said. “This is what we’ve wanted, the flow of water is fantastic. The city has been affected in a very negative way because of our water crisis in the past.” The mood changed on Friday, however, after a continuing down pour of rain saw water pouring over the dam wall at great speeds – putting surrounding properties on high alert of flooding. Luckily, over the weekend the rain eased and the water levels lowered, however more rain is expected so services are staying on high alert! Orange City Council is continuing its plans on developing the Macquarie Pipeline, and the mayor says it is still a priority.

Photo News Blood Donor Challenge! If you didn’t catch the feature on the new Blood Donor Centre last week then listen up! Photo News is holding a Blood Donor Challenge and we’re urging businesses to join in for the chance to win a $2,000 ad package in our paper! We want businesses to rally their staff, friends, customers and family to donate blood at the Orange Blood Donor Centre and the business that donates the most blood in September will get this great prize. All you have to do is register with the blood bank on 13 14 95 and they’ll explain what each business needs to do. When you’re registered you can start rounding up donors, who will all donate for your business. Photo News has already set an example with six of their staff donating blood, including four first timers! The challenge ends at the end of the month so make sure you get to the Donor Centre as soon as possible. One lucky donor from the winning business will also win a dinner for two at the fabulous Harrison’s Restaurant in Orange – now that’ll get your blood supplies flowing! Give the Blood Donor Centre a call on 13 14 95 to get started today.

Orange’s

Beauty Queen By CHRIS BENNETTS Local lady Bec Thurston has reached the final 6 in the ‘Mrs Australia Quest’ pageant, which is a prestigious competition for married women. Bec decided to enter the competition to become an ambassador for married women and also help raise money for Ovarian Cancer. “I saw a story about it on ‘Today/Tonight’, so I did some research on the internet and I just decided to have a go” Bec told Photo News. “It’s a pageant for married women, so it focuses more on family issues and things that may affect married women. The competition also raises money for Ovarian Cancer, which is one of the reasons I decided to enter.” Bec will travel to Sydney next month for a gala dinner, where the winner of the Australian title will be announced. “If I end up winning Mrs Australia I will have to travel to Korea to compete against all the other winners from different countries for the ‘Mrs World’ title.” “I’ve had to do essays and photos, I’ve had to tell them a lot about myself which has been pretty full on” Bec said. Bec is asking the people of Orange to help her secure the title by going to www.mrsaustraliaquest.com.au and voting for her. Voting costs a small donation, with the money going towards Ovarian Cancer awareness. So come on Orange, let’s get behind Bec and help her win the title of Mrs Australia!

Nominate now: Mark Murphy, Fay Layton and Graeme Eggleston from the Rotary Club of Orange Calare want you to nominate local heroes for their Vocational Community Awards Picture by GRACE JOHNS Do you know someone in the local community that is a bit of an ‘unsung hero’? Someone who works hard at what they do without expecting much recognition? Well the Rotary Club of orange Calare (RCooC) want to hear from you, because they’re looking for nominations for their new RCooC Vocational Community Awards! The awards cover seven different categories, each in an area where you might find one of these great locals; community service, pride of workmanship, volunteer, high school student,

TAFE student, university student and the prestigious ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ award. Paul Harris was the founder of the world’s first service club – The Rotary Club of Chicago in February 1905. He wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of his youth. Rotarians pool their resources to help communities in need. The dedication to this ideal is best expressed in his motto ‘Service Above Self’. Rotarians in Australia continue to recognise service above self and it is with that theme that

the very prestigious ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ award will be selected. The person you want to nominate doesn’t have to be a Rotarian, but they do have to fit the bill of someone who works hard to help their community whether it’s in their business, school or by volunteering. Nominations for these awards are available on the RCooC website www.orangerotary. com.au or by contacting Graeme Eggleston on 0428 270 447 or on geg88281@bigpond.net.au. Nominations close on october 12 so make sure you get in quick.

Mobile meals: Volunteers Lloyd and Gwen Coulter, Judy Haines, Miriam Gilkes, Oscar Lovick, Cody Rainer and Sheryl Jenkins from Orange City Council getting ready to do their Meals on Wheels delivery on Meals on Wheels Day

Commending our volunteers By GRACE JOHNS This week’s Pat on the Back goes to all of those volunteers out there that deliver food as part of the Meals on Wheels service. Meals on Wheels have probably provided around 300,000 meals to Orange residents since they began in 1963, and all thanks to the help of local volunteers.

Last Wednesday, August 25 was Meals on Wheels Day – an event held to commend the continuous support of volunteers who work for Meals on Wheels and deliver meals to the elderly and less mobile every day. Not only does this mean that the elderly can stay independent and living in their own homes, but it also provides them with social contact. Local volunteer, Gwen Coulter, has been

volunteering for 40 years with Meals on Wheels in the Orange and Bathurst area and she says she loves the work. Meals on Wheels are always looking for more volunteers to add to their weekly roster, so if you’re interested in getting involved contact the Council. Volunteers work on a roster, usually doing deliveries one day per week. Well done to everyone!

Good vision is essential for driving, playing sports and fulfilling work and school tasks which is why it’s so important that children, teens and parents incorporate regular eye examinations into their general health regime,” Leesa says. “Regular eye examinations can lead to early detection of conditions and diseases. If eye health is monitored throughout life, there is an increased likelihood that vision loss due to macular degeneration, amblyopia (lazy eye) and glaucoma can be prevented.” “Parents should be confident that their children’s eye health is the best it can be,” Leesa says.

Words and portrait by Donna Stedman

“It’s hard to beat the best of the best” Sometimes I get to photograph a piece of machinery that leaves me wordless; the pure awesomeness is .........as my hubby says “fully sick” and this divine creation falls into that category. John Grum is a lucky man indeed being the owner of this 2006 Custom made Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle Fat Boy. He has made one of his dreams come true when he purchased “Hindmarsh” (nickname for the bike) brand spanking new four years ago from Sydney. The name “Hindmarsh” came about due to the custom paint design which reminded John of the Eels player. Riding “Hindmarsh” is a very special treat for John, who usually only gets him out of the shed to clean and admire him. Since ownership John has only clocked up 1800k’s. John’s pride and joy is certainly something to be proud of and I am totally smitten that I got to photograph this fully sick Harley to share with our Photo News family.

Words and portrait by Chris Bennetts

Climbing the ladder to success The world of telecommunications is constantly changing and Darren Smith has been at the forefront of a lot of these changes in the 22 years he has worked for Telstra. It is a career that has seen him grow from a trainee linesman to the General Manager of Telstra Country Wide for Western NSW.

P

hoto News talked to Darren about his career progression and what it takes to climb the company ladder. “I started in 1988 basically as a labourer and I was trained as what was called a ‘linesman’ in Sydney. I then went through all the Telstra training to become a technician and that took about four to five years. “I then worked in Sydney for a while around the Northern Beaches; I was living on the Central Coast at the time so I had to travel to Sydney every day. I was one of those guys on the freeway every day.” Darren finally got a transfer to the coast and was able to work where he lived. “I was able to get a transfer to where I lived in Woy Woy. I thought that was going to be the ‘be all and end all’, but I quickly realised that was not what I wanted to do, so I started going for more jobs.”

“Music and arts groups can also apply for these grants, and they can do so by visiting www.ideasforgood.com.au/taf.” Darren looks back fondly on his days as a technician and believes it has given him a great overview of the company. “As a technician I did a lot of install and maintenance, which involved crawling under houses. I don’t miss that at all! Dealing with dogs and cats under houses was always a bit of a nightmare! I’m happy doing what I’m doing now, although that background knowledge in the network comes in handy all the time. Being the AGM I get people calling me directly with service type issues, so I know where to go and who to talk to in regards to getting things fixed quickly within the business.” Darren is also becoming accustomed to a country way of life; “Since I’ve been here I’ve recognised the value of community and I think communities out here are a lot closer

“Darren looks back fondly on his days as a technician and believes it has given him a great overview of the company” Darren applied for a team leader position with Telstra, a job that is usually allocated to more senior team members, but at just 23 years of age Darren secured the role and held the position for the next 5 years. His next move was in 2003 when he transferred into Telstra Country Wide, where he has been ever since. “I was with Telstra Country Wide in Newcastle in a Sales and Marketing role, it was then that I applied for the AGM position here in Orange just over 12 months ago.” A working day for Darren differs greatly from his technician beginnings. “I deal with the media a lot these days, helping to raise Telstra’s profile and continuing the great community work that we do; for example, recently 27 sporting clubs across Western NSW were successful in gaining grants as part of the ‘Telstra Assistance Fund’. Both Orange CYMS Juniors and Seniors received grants of $1000 from Telstra, which they used to get goalpost protectors and water drums.”

M M M assage on

than say, Sydney. I find that people are friendly out here and they take the time to say hello which is always nice.” Darren offers this advice to anybody wishing to climb the corporate ladder “You’ve got to be ambitious to move forward in your career, you’ve just got to work hard and grab the opportunities as they come. I’ve been fortunate to have been able to build my career over time and a lot of the time people would say ‘I’m mad’ because I’ve had to move away from where I live to further my career. When I was in Woy Woy for example, the team leader job was on the other side of Newcastle, so it was a good hour and a half drive every day, so I’ve always been prepared to chase it and move to wherever the job may be... and it’s exactly the case here.” “I think that would be a key bit of advice, be prepared to make sacrifices and work really hard to achieve.”

Darren Smith, General Manager of Telstra country Wide Western NSW.

Calling all indie/alternative/ roCk/pop/folk musiC lovers!

w i t h li t t l e g

Okay. So metal is fine. If you like it... that’s cool. I’m not dissin’ you. Full respect. But today I wanna talk to all the non metal/hardcore/screamo/emo fans out there and say... WHERE ARE YOU? And more importantly – why aren’t you playing music? I like live music but I haven’t seen a gig in town in a few months that doesn’t involve the thrashing of someone’s vocal chords. Yes – we do have some local DJs that do some wonderful things to make us part-ay, but oh, how I long to hear the sound of an acoustic guitar strummed melodically to a lovely, poetic voice. Or the ‘awwww yeeeaaahhhh!’ of a rocker with his drainpipe jeans and quiffy hair. And WHERE are the harmonica, banjo and accordion in the Orange music scene?! I ask you that! If you’re reading this nodding in agreement with me then I say to you: turn to your friends and say ‘hey, we could start a band!’ I don’t care if you do covers; I don’t care if you’re crap. Just please. Someone. Play. Different. Music. I would take up this task for myself, but I think it would actually be a duty to the citizens of Orange that I don’t join a band. But what about the rest of you? I know you have skills! I want to hear them! It’s not necessarily the music itself that is important in this case, it’s more how the music will filter through the crevices of Orange and ignite in the hearts of indie and alternative kids, and next thing they’ll be crawling from their dingy basements and showing up to gigs wearing their vintage cardigans and docs and a new music scene will be born! A new, chilled out, happy, creative centre of goodness! If you do have a band, email me on grace@ cwpn.com.au. I beg of you.

THE WATER IS BACK! Let all garden lovers rejoice! The recent rains, the change back to level two water restrictions and with Spring now upon us , we all have the perfect opportunity to get out into our gardens and do all those things we’ve missed doing for so long. The Colour City is set to become just that again, the way we know it looks at its best, the way we’d all love to see it again, blooming with colour and character. Here at Photo News, we’re encouraging all keen gardeners to take up the challenge and get back to enjoying your gardens the way you like to. If we do a good job over the coming weeks, come November the fruit of our efforts will be there for all to see, something to look forward to. To help you get started, we’ve put together this small feature which includes some great offers from local garden specialists and a few quick tips that we hope you find helpful. Enjoy!

QUICK TIPS With the ground so wet at the moment, it’s an excellent time to mulch. Mulching will help keep the moisture in the soil for longer. Mitre 10 and Thomson’s Garden Centre both have great deals on Sugar Cane Mulch at the moment. The recent weather and conditions also sees us with the perfect time to remove weeds or lay new turf. The moist ground lends itself to making both these chores easier and timely. To save water, think about a do it yourself dripper system around your garden beds. Done right, you’ll use less water and the water will go where it’s most needed. If you’re planning to remove or replace shrubs or plants, now’s a good time to dig them out while the ground is so moist. It’ll be a lot harder to do this as the ground dries out. Now is also a good time to spread gypsum on those areas of your lawn or garden that have become hard and compacted because of the drought. Gypsum will help break down the soil to absorb water better. It could also be a good time to aerate your lawn. Plants, trees and shrubs are now starting to bud up for Spring, so it’s also the time to spray them for bugs and diseases. Ask your garden centre for help in choosing the right products. The grass will be shooting up very soon and it will be time to get out the mower. Be prepared by getting your mower serviced before the rush starts. Also, sharpen your gardening tools including your edging spade so you’ll be ready to get straight into it when the time is right. The sooner you get your garden sorted the sooner you’ll reap the benefits of your efforts.

For many years this building in Sale Street served as the Orange Infants School and today continues to serve the community as the Orange Cultural Centre. The infants school was part of the Orange Rural School, which became Orange Public School with children ‘graduating’ to the ‘big school’ along the street after completing their first few years of schooling. Government schooling at this site

finished at the end of the school year in 1966 with a new school constructed at the corner of Anson and Torpy streets. In 1966 the Department of Education accepted a tender of 117,000 pounds from Kell & Rigby to construct the new school comprising of 10 classrooms, offices and ablutions block as well as a dental clinic on a site facing Moulder Street. Term one in 1967 saw more than 400 children start at the new Orange Infants School. President of the school’s Mothers

Club Mrs G Alston stated at the time that one of the most welcome additions would be the installation of electrical heating which would replace the outdated pot-belly stove heating of the previous school. When vacated the Sale Street premises became the cultural centre and in subsequent years has been the home of a number of community and cultural groups. The centre is in a busy spot being between the entrance and exit of a central Orange car park. The trees on the left and right of the photo are still there.

School’s

with Paul Tierney

It’s about the kids, it’s not about us. Working in the education industry and having 3 kids of my own means I’ve been exposed to a fair share of what is often called ‘nasty parent syndrome’ in my time. This past week, I have seen both ends of the parent spectrum – the delightful, and the not-sodelightful, with one incident straight out of the ‘just when you think you’ve seen everything’ category. I travelled down to Sydney last week to cheer on and take photos of our primary school kids in a representative athletics carnival. Leaving the sleety conditions of Orange to bathe in sunshine had everyone in a good mood. The kids from all of the different schools were running, jumping and throwing out of their skins, and the cheering was loud and enthusiastic. I love athletics carnivals, and the smile on the faces of the kids, whether they come first, in the middle, or just finish is amazing. The biggest cheers of the day are always saved for the relays. Everyone else has finished their events and has moved back to the stands, and the cheering is more organised, louder and intense than it has been for the whole day. From time to time, things go wrong, and in this case one boy from a Sydney school ran out of his lane and in front of another boy from another school as he was handing his baton on. He was 9 years old, a genuine accident, no ‘harm’ done. But get this, a mum (I kid you not), hopped over the grandstand barrier, ran down onto the track, and started chastising the boy from the other school for blocking her child’s lane. The boy was 9, he’d run his heart out, just like all of the boys, and now this strange lady was yelling at him. Thank heavens the officials came over and sternly spoke to the raving mum. I wonder if the mum regrets making this heatof-the-moment decision, or if she still believes she was right? Hmmm … On the flip side, Eisteddfod week saw me enter the Orange Conservatorium for a rare visit. Cute little kids with piano books under their arms swarmed everywhere. Adjudicators in squeaky shoes ruled the day, and mums and dads looked more nervous than their charges. But EVERY child who played got hearty applause from the entire audience. Some missed a note or two, but no-one cared, they still got a big clap. While getting a medallion was still the aim, the thrill of performing in front of an audience was the recipe for the day, and everyone was special. The mums, dads, and grandparents lapped it up, and everyone left with a smile. Maybe we should get the crazy mum from athletics to come and sit in the conservatorium, and make her clap sedately for a day or two. Maybe then she’d realise it’s not all about her.

Someone painted the stripes on.

It used to be white and the zoo keeper wanted it to have stripes.

Because it was rubbing all over some dead grass.

It was born with stripes, and someone helped it.

Two training institutions are inviting you to take advantage of certain services performed by their students at greatly reduced prices. Remedial massages for $25, free haircuts and other low priced hair and beauty treatments are available. Look for the ads for The International Beauty Institute and the Advanced Massage College in this issue for the details.

I went to the launch on a new local beer at Totally Local recently and part of the spread they put on included some of their wild prawns. Boy they looked good and didn’t the guests hoe into them. I’ll be honest though, I was dieting so I restrained myself but there is no doubting that they were something special and next time I get the opportunity, look out!

Harvey World Travel is putting on a Gap Night this Monday especially for those people around 18 or 19 who are thinking of a trip overseas before heading off to Uni. Check their ad in this issue and then book your place to hear what they have to say. Sounds interesting!

Local Council Manager in New Zealand study A study tour to New Zealand this week has been awarded to the Executive Manager of the Wellington Blayney Cabonne Strategic Alliance of Councils.

Donna Galvin has been awarded the 10day study tour by the Local Government Managers Association (NSW) as part of its international exchange program. Mrs Galvin will research alliances, collaborations and shared service arrangements between a number of New Zealand councils. She will also attend the Society of Local Government Managers’ annual conference

in Queenstown from September 5–7 before visiting three council consortiums in Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and the Manawatu-Wanganui group, who all operate shared services and business unit models. “While New Zealand Local Government provides the same core services we do in Australia, it went through a significant reform period in the early 2000s and there are now some innovative ways that councils are working collectively and still maintaining their autonomy,” Mrs Galvin said. “I particularly want to study the sustainability of their arrangements.” Following her visit, Mrs Galvin will provide reports on her findings to the

Quick>> >>NewS Events funding offered in Cabonne

Community events and festivals in Cabonne Shire have been offered funding to help run their events. Cabonne Council is seeking applications for its Events Assistance Program and is offering a range of grants of up to $5000. The aim is to encourage a calendar of events offering visitors and residents a range of tourism, sporting and arts activities. The main criteria for events include: increase the number of visitors to Cabonne; extend visitors’ length of stay; and attract visitors during off-peak or shoulder periods. Not for profit organisations, incorporated associations and registered businesses are eligible to apply. The Council is offering assistance in two funding rounds, the first closing on September 17 and the second on March 18, 2011. Funding assistance guidelines and application forms can be obtained by calling 6392 3252 or from Council’s website: www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au/development.

She will also host a New Zealand Local Government manager who will be undertaking a study tour of Australia. “It will be a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the innovations and efficiencies achieved by the WBC Alliance which incorporates Wellington, Blayney and Cabonne Councils and Central Tablelands Water,” Mrs Galvin said. WBC Chairman Kevin Duffy

congratulated Mrs Galvin and said her research into Local Government in New Zealand would be invaluable. “The Strategic Alliance has been at the forefront of Local Government reform in NSW and Mrs Galvin’s findings will help guide its future direction,” Mr Duffy said. “I am particularly proud that her outstanding work with the Alliance has received such high recognition from the Local Government Managers Association.”

Tove and the love of paper Tove Brown loves everything about paper. “I love the textures, the colours, the feel, and all the things you can do with it,” she said. “I have a range of papers, hand-made paper, screen-printed paper, handmade artists’ paper.” Tove started “The Paper Workshop” in Millthorpe recently and is holding her first exhibition on Friday, September 10. “I sell handmade paper, books, albums.

It’s also a studio where I make things to order. The studio is based around handmade books, albums, cards, that sort of thing,” she said. Tove’s first exhibition titled “My Kitchen Table” also features three other local artists, Sandra Jakeman, Freya Blackwood, and Prue Hawke. The exhibition and sale will run for two months. The Paper Workshop is at 16 Victoria St, Millthorpe, ph 6366 3521.

Trunkey Public School’s world record attempt

Students from Trunkey Public School recently took part in a world record interactive weather report attempt. The school took part with more than 261 other schools across Australia in the Guinness World Record attempt. The pupils measured the temperature in their playground at midday for “The Big Report” which The Weather Channel hoped would be the world’s largest interactive weather report.

Showman’s shop finds permanent home There’s a reason that Blayney’s new Bargain Market looks like a bazaar at the local show, that’s what it is! Owner Leo Nitto started the shop for his daughter Kirsty to fill in the down times for his Nittos Amusements show rides business. “I’ve been doing the shows for 30-years; amusement rides, jumping castles, merry-go-rounds even The Bucking Wombat!” he said. “I set the shop up for Kirsty. I wanted something for the quiet times when the shows aren’t on and we can still do stuff,” he said. For Kirsty, the opportunity to run her own small business after leaving school was too good to refuse. “It’s a good shop, you learn new skills every day,” she said. The shop is an eclectic mix of kids’ toys, clothes, second-hand books, kitchenware, prams, and exrental videos and DVDs. This unique mix reflects the varied background of much of the material. “I know what sells, I buy from shops that are closing

down, that sort of thing,” Leo said. “I got the prams from a pram shop that shut down… the ex-hire videos came with the shelving from a video shop in Newcastle…I got the clothing off the internet, and I buy from wholesalers in Sydney,” he explained. Located next to the Laundromat in Ogilvy St, the Bargain Mart offers a unique service; they’ll wash your clothes for you! “We sell dishwashing liquid, that sort of stuff for the Laundromat,” Leo explains. “We even run a laundry service. If people want to leave washing here, we’ll wash and dry it for a small fee,” he said. Leo is keen to expand the store next door with a section selling children’s bikes and toy cars. The shop window is even lined with hundreds of figurines for sale to add to the spectacle. Ever the showman, he laughs: “You’ve got to put on a bit of a show to get the people in. We even do showbags.”

The constant wet grounds, as well as replenishing dams throughout the region, have also led to a number of trees loosening their roots and falling over.

Garden Ramble races against wet winter As the song says, it’s been a long, cold, lonely, winter in the Central Tablelands with below average temperatures and seemingly constant rain. Temperatures for August particularly were three to four degrees below the seasonal average with seemingly no respite from the rainy weather. Sporting cancellations were also common as sporting fields remained waterlogged. The constant wet grounds, as well as replenishing dams throughout the region, have also led to a number of trees loosening their roots and falling over. But spring is now with us, with early bloomers like the Cootamundra Wattle already starting to flower. The good rains should lead to a bumper spring for both farmers and gardeners in the villages around Orange. The Millthorpe Garden Ramble, set down for the Long Weekend, Saturday October 2 and Sunday October 3, is in a race against the clock to get their gardens ready for the hundreds of visitors who traditionally attend this wonderful weekend. For more information on the Garden Ramble, call Gwen Webster on 6366 3411.

Brock Walker Officiating a sporting fixture can be a high pressured job, but 15 year old rugby league referee Brock Walker enjoys being in the hot seat. Brock decided to pursue refereeing after playing a few seasons “I enjoyed the role the referee played in the game, so I wanted to have a go.” The next step for Brock was attending a referee training course run by the Group 10 Referees’ Association. Since

then he has not looked back. Brock referees junior matches on the weekend for the Bloomfield Rugby League Club and he gets a taste of senior action when he touch line referees for the senior Group 10 competition. The chance to be a role model is one of the main reasons Brock enjoys refereeing. “I am inspired to help out the little kids, I want to help them learn and enjoy the game”. He also credits his referee colleagues

for helping him achieve success at just 15 years of age. “All the referees I work with are nice blokes and easy to get along with. They are very helpful to me at such a young age.” Brock has lofty goals for his passion, with dreams of making it to the big time “I would like to take refereeing further; I want to end up on the international stage refereeing the NRL.” Good luck with your refereeing career Brock!

REALLY? DARLING

I believe my little daughter wants a pair of glasses. I don’t know why she does. Perhaps glasses are now “cool” to have in school? But though she sees just fine, she still says she needs glasses. I took her to the eye doctor just to check it out though. She was asked to read the bottom row of letters on the eye chart. She said, “All right, I can see the ‘O’ and the ‘P’ and the ‘T,’ but not the ‘N’ and the ‘Z.’”

WHAT IS SHE REALLY SAYING? A young man in college called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just met the girl of his dreams. Now what should he do? His mother had an idea: “Why don’t you send her flowers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a home-cooked meal?” He thought this was a great strategy, and a week later, the girl came to dinner. His mother called the next day to see how things had gone. “I was totally humiliated,” he moaned. “She insisted on washing the dishes.” “What’s wrong with that?” asked his mother. “We hadn’t started eating yet.”

BLESS YOU CHILD.. Yeah right!

A grandfather and granddaugher were sitting and talking when the young girl asked, “Did God make you, Grandpa?” “Yes, God made me,” the grandfather answered. A few minutes later, the little girl asked him, “Did God make me too?” “Yes, He did,” the older man answered. For a few minutes, the little girl seemed to be studying her grandpa, as well as her own reflection in the mirror, while her grandfather wondered what was running through her mind. At last she spoke up. “You know, Grandpa,” she said, “God’s doing a lot better job lately.”

On Tour with Belmo www.jasonbelmonte.com.au

Hey Hey Everyone, This week I gave a helping hand in setting up Kimberly's and Bec's new boutique “ Belle Armoire” means beautiful wardrobe in French. Painting, sanding, fixing and carrying all sorts of things into the store. It’s really shaping up and whilst there isn’t going to be any items for me to wear (although I think I’d look great in one of the dresses the girls showed me) the cloths look beautiful. Ladies this shop is all about beautiful, feminine and different fashion for women and they also cater for the little ones too - Very exciting. “ Belle Armoire” 215 Lords Place, Orange - OPENING SOON As for me, I have just over a week left in town before I fly to Korea and Japan, I'll be doing demonstrations of Storms equipment, coaching and then finishing off with a Korean pro event. I haven’t done as much practice as I would of liked, so the this week I will be working hard on the lanes making sure I’m ready. It’s a long way to fly to bowl horrible, so I plan to make sure I’m prepared. Will keep you up to date while I’m over there. Be good - Cheers Jason
