All star local cast to rock Rent

Hi friends! This week we launch our new website and you can read more about that in my Page 3 column. It’s all very exciting and I think you’ll like it. Last week I mentioned we’d be running a big promotion through Spring called the Photo News Spring Shopping Spree. It’s a big shopping promotion with $10,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. We’re currently inviting local businesses to be part of this unique promotion and would love to hear from any business interested in finding out how it all works. Businesses can participate in this 3 month promotion from as little as $462. Call our office on 6361 3575 to find out more.

We introduced another new supplement into Photo News last month aimed at 20 – 40 year olds. We called it our 20+ Magazine and the second issue will appear in next week’s Photo News. We’ve made further improvements since our first issue so I hope you like them. Photo News is also helping a group called Heart Kids promote their upcoming ball. Check their ad on Page 31 and then give some serious thought about going along. We regard Heart Kids as another great cause that deserves our support. Another new feature we’re introducing this week is a segment we will call Quiet Achievers. It’ll appear on our Business Page from time to time and introduce you to some of the great businesses in our area that are doing great things. Our first Quiet Achiever appears on page 26. And now for a few quick reminders about several things – • Call 6361 3575 to add names to our weekly Birthday File • You can now pick up copies of Photo News each week at Cafe Latte, the United Servo in Woodward Street as well as Cargo and Cudal general stores. • If you know someone or something that should appear in Photo News call us on 6361 3575 or email reception@ cwpn.com.au with the details. We’d love to hear from you.

Until next week, cheers and go well!  bob@cwpn.com.au

Show time: Pictured is Matt Davis who will play Mark Cohen, David Smyth who will play the role of philosophy professor and anarchist Tom Collins, and Troy Sargent as Angel Dumott Schunard in That Other Theatre Company’s production of Rent. By GRACE JOHNS If you’ve been wondering where some of Orange’s most talented singers and musicians have been hiding for the last few months then look no further than That Other Theatre Company’s rehearsal hall – because the all local cast of Rent have been whipping up a theatrical masterpiece! The story is about several impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York city’s Lower East side and is one many modern day Australians may relate to in one way or

another with the show commencing next weekend. This is the debut production for well known locals, Cecilia Rochelli and Robert Dunn’s new theatre company, and will see a cast of complete locals follow Jonathan Larson’s Emmy award winning rock musical. The musical compresses one year in the life of a family of friends into a few hours, but still manages to tell an intense tale of their struggle to survive in the modern world. Theatre and musical fans out there should expect an evening of edgy rock, rhythm and blues music based around the opera La bohème.

Photo News got a sneak peek at final rehearsals on the weekend and we were blown away by the talent of actors, singers and musicians on stage – and that was just a Sunday morning rehearsal! Tickets are on sale now for Rent and you better be quick because they’re going to go fast! The musical will be on Thursday, August 19, Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21 at 8pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2pm, all at the Orange Civic Theatre. Tickets are available through Ticketek at the Civic Theatre, by calling 6393 8111 or visiting www.ticketek.com.au.

Pipeline plans to move ahead By CHRIS BENNETTS A pLAN to secure Orange’s water supply for future generations was announced recently by Orange city council. The state and federal governments have pledged tens of millions of dollars towards building a pipeline to the Macquarie River, which is expected to deliver 1,800 mega litres of water to Suma park each year. The Federal Government has committed $20 million, the State Government $18.2 million and Orange City Council $8.8 million to fund the project. Orange Mayor John Davis, said it was the largest and most significant infrastructure project in the city’s 150 year history, and is expected to take two years to build. “The Council and the Federal and State governments are well aware of the challenges facing the city and have acted to address the issue. The Macquarie pipeline will be delivered to address critical shortages in the short term and provide capacity for a sustainable supply.” Cr Davis said. New South Wales Water Minister Phillip Costa flew into Orange to join Mayor Davis, Senator Steve Hutchins and Calare candidate Kevin Duffy for the announcement. Mayor Davis said a lot of work had gone into bringing this project forward.

Our next Dinner Club night is filling up quickly with about half the seats filled. It’s an International Night at Cafe Latte on Saturday September 4. Book through Cafe Latte on 6363 1855, cost is $45 per head.

Plan in the pipeline: NSW Water Minister Phillip Costa announces funding plans for a pipeline connecting Orange to the Macquarie River. Orange Mayor John Davis looks on. “Massive projects like this take a massive commitment and hard work. There are many people who made this project a reality,” The council will now start work on an environmental assessment of the project and plan to hold community consultation.

By BOB HOlland It’s been many months coming but I’m very pleased to announce that Central West Photo News now has its very own website at www.myphotonews.com.au Although what we now have is just Stage 1 in an ongoing process, our new website will open up exciting new opportunities for readers and advertisers alike. For example, you can now read our entire newspaper online each week, no matter where you are. You can also share any relevant news or photos that appear in Photo News with friends and family who live elsewhere. No matter where they live, simply by going to www.myphotonews.com.au they’ll be able to read what you’re reading. We’ll not only have the current issue online but also the previous four issues as well. No other local newspaper does this.

our focus will always be to make your Photo news experience better and better Our new website also provides opportunity for readers to send comments, give feedback or send contributions or photos to Photo News online, quickly and easily. We’ve also expanded our 3D Shopping Guide to include a designated section on our website. This is to increase the potential for our 3D Shopping Guide advertisers while providing readers with more information about some of the great Deals, Discounts and Discoveries that appear in the paper each week. We’ll also be adding a variety of coupon offers that you’ll be able to download, print and use at local businesses. Our 3D Shopping Guide is a feature that will give us an outstanding new and exclusive way of helping Photo News advertisers. We feel it provides outstanding potential for advertisers and one that will further set Photo News apart as innovators in the newspaper industry. Of course, there is still much more we can do with our website and in time and as resources allow we’ll constantly be adding new features and changing things for the better. Whatever we do our focus will always be to make your Photo News experience better and better. Newspapers websites are nothing new, in fact there’s not a lot new about traditional newspapers generally, about the only thing that is changing is they are becoming less and less “news” papers and more and more “views” papers. Despite this, Photo News is not your traditional newspaper and continues to lead the way with innovation and imagination on all fronts. Our website is just another example of this. What we have tried to do and will continue to do is to provide a website that is inviting, not boring– surprising, not predictable - useful, not ho hum. So…click onto www.myphotonews.com.au, check out what we have so far, and then use the feedback tab to tell us what you think. Whatever your view is now, be assured www. myphotonews.com.au will only get better.

Bathed in metal

Keepin’ it clean: Deprivation band members Lachlan Harrison, Ben Weber and Albie Bevan will be thrilling crowds at Saturday’s all ages Full Metal Lockdown; Supermax

By GRACE JOHNS Mothers, lock up your daughters, it’s time for metal! except don’t actually lock up your daughters, because they’re really going to want to go to RockUp’s Full Metal Lockdown; Supermax this weekend! the event, as with all rockUp shows, is an all ages, drug and alcohol free night of live music and good times. Four metal bands will be entertaining the crowd on saturday night, including three local bands and one sydney band.

headliners and local metal ‘superstars’ Deprivation have told the audience to expect a night of “Devastation, decimation and Deprivation” (in that order?), especially considering the band haven’t played a gig in orange for several months. “We like all ages events – it’s not often that the kids get to witness a hard rock metal show,” Deprivation told Photo News. Deprivation will be bringing along their friends from sydney, Recoil, who will also be playing at Metal Scarrs on Friday. RockUp Battle of the Bands grand finalists, Defaced, will

be hitting the stage as well as Misty’s Dancing Pixies, a synth metal band new to the orange scene, comprised of students from orange high school and Canobolas high school. this is RockUp’s first and possibly last metal event for 2010 so make sure you get there! Full Metal Lockdown; Supermax is on saturday, August 14 at the CWA hall, robertson Park and starts at 6pm. It’ll go until about 10pm and only costs $5. remember, it’s strictly drug and alcohol free and there will be no pass outs (that means once you’re in, if you leave, you’re not allowed back in).

ORANGE COuNCil NEws Orange City Council will have further discussions with the Coalition to secure a solid funding guarantee for the Macquarie Pipeline but today’s announcement falls well short of the State and Federal Government’s commitment. “Member for Calare John Cobb’s funding pledge for Lake Rowlands is good news for the region but until the Coalition matches the Federal Government’s commitment to the Macquarie Pipeline, Orange’s water security is uncertain,” Mayor John Davis said. Mayor Davis said Council had already undertaken a feasibility study. “The pipeline was identified in the $560,000 Centroc water security study. An assessment has since been undertaken by consultants MWH to examine this option in more detail. This included testing the viability of the project with due consideration for potential environmental impacts and detailing the estimated costs. This feasibility study found the proposal has merit,” Cr Davis said.

Get unearthed!

Don’t sit on the fence when it comes to God By Melanie Pearce Elections provide a lot of food for thought about decisionmaking. About 5% of Australian voters either choose not to, or can’t make up their minds about who they would like to represent them and instead cast an informal vote. Is it because we don’t like making decisions? Are we worried we will not be able to explain why we chose one candidate over another? Much the same can be said for people’s attitudes toward God. Are our lives too comfortable and we don’t want to make a decision? Are we worried we’ll be questioned and perhaps ridiculed about our stance? I suspect there are many fence sitters who want to make a decision. People who may pray to God in difficulty, who wonder at the miracle of birth, who are awestruck by nature’s beauty and its power, or who want their children to know about Jesus but have convinced themselves they’re too old to learn something new. Decision-making is hard, even when we’re just one of millions determining the outcome of a three-year parliamentary term. How much more important is it to make a decision that has personal and eternal outcomes?

Bletchington history old and new tHe reCent renovations of Bletchington Public school have uncovered a piece of education history, as well as making a new piece of history for the school. an old school bell that has been on the grounds of Bletchington Public school for some time has been moved into a more prominent position after its history was revealed. retired assistant principal, June Bennett, told Photo news that Bletchington opened its doors in 1957, but bells like this were put in around the Central West in the 1880s. it was apparent that this bell didn’t originally belong to Bletchington, and June has done some thorough research to determine that the bell started out its school

life at Lucknow Public school, which closed in 1971. the bell would have been used often at Lucknow, and on occasion at Bletchington. This fits in with the time frame of history in the Orange’s district, and the bell has now been placed in the Bletchington administration office with a plaque to commemorate where it came from. a new addition to Bletchington which is sure to make history is this beautiful crest that was donated to the school by their P&C to commemorate the opening of their new facilities. Bletchington officially opened their new buildings on tuesday.

Welcome Greg Jones Let’s aLL give a big welcome to new Orange resident, greg Jones. greg has moved to Orange from Canberra where he worked in telecommunications. He has taken up a job as a sales consultant at inland technology. Many people know inland technology as the Canon dealer in Orange, however its name has recently been changed as they now deal with other products such as Lexmark. Until 1991 Greg was a surface finisher in the air force and has lived in Canberra since then. His wife Joan and daughters Monique and Corinne, are still in Canberra currently, but greg plans on building a house in the Millthorpe area and then they will move and join him. greg said that the Orange temperature was very similar to Canberra, but the pace is definitely different. Welcome greg!

Jim Atkins! The champion horse-trainer from Toowoomba has passed on at the age of 94. In a training career of 75 years Jim Atkins had over 3500 winners including 13 group one triumphs. In his prime Jim had a training line-up of up to 55 horses and took out five Brisbane Metropolitan trainers’ premierships. Born in Grafton, New South Wales, Jim took up training at the age of 20 when his father died in 1936. His father Bill was a horse trainer and his death saw Jim take over the reins of the family business. Jim moved the operation to Brisbane to be closer to the racing industry before he spent time in army service during World War Two. In 1943 he walked his horses from Brisbane to Toowoomba and since then has become synonymous with Toowoomba training and racing. kookAburrAs! The Australian men’s hockey team has taken their third straight Champions Trophy. The Kookaburras dominated the tournament in Germany, winning against all their group opponents then smashing England four nil in the final. The Australian domination of the tournament was such that they were the only team with a positive goal difference by the end of the tournament. With the Commonwealth Games in the offering, the Kookaburras are well placed for Gold. All blAcks! There’s nothing so likely to put an end to an All Blacks winning streak than a World Cup but, at this moment, the Big Black Humm V of world rugby is firing on all cylinders. They’re hosting it, they are the form side and they have the wood on both their main southern hemisphere rivals – can they be stopped? I kinda doubt it. VVs lAxmAn! Very Very Special a few times against us, VVS has again pulled out some of the magic he is capable of in the second test of the three test series against Sri Lanka. Struggling with back spasms, Laxman needed Vihrender Sehwag as a runner for the second half of his innings but, still managed to get India to their 257 run target to draw the series. With Murali making his farewell and now this game, it was momentous cricket in Sri Lanka, a classic showdown. Will PoWer! Australian IndyCar driver Will Power has equalled a record by taking his seventh pole position of the season by being fastest in qualifying on the winding Mid-Ohio track in Lexington, Ohio. 54 points up in the Championship, Power is looking the goods to take the overall title. He already has the road course championship and the Mario Andretti Trophy.

Jeers for: sAunA contests! Lunatics from cold climates have developed a competition over the years to see who can hack the hottest sauna for the longest. Well, they’ve finally gone too far: the finals in Finland ended with the Russian contestant dead and the Finnish challenger hospitalised with severe burns. It is believed the sauna was cranked up to 110 degrees Celsius and Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy lasted six minutes before he was dragged out dead and “the world champion” Timo Kaukonen of Finland was taken to hospital. stuArt broAd! The English “pace” man chucked the ball at Pakistani keeper Zulqarnain in frustration on the third day of the test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The ball struck the Pakistan batsman in the shoulder and Broad offered only a perfunctory apology. Broad had got Zulqarnain for a duck and was clearly piqued by the fact the Pakistanis had the temerity not to collapse again in the second innings. Broad is facing the possibility of a one match ban whereas Zulqarnain went on to make a gutsy 88. John buchAnAn! Never the most likeable, he really is stretching the friendship by heading to England to introduce his mission statement and tsunami of statistics approach to the England and Ireland cricket team in the lead-up to the Ashes. I’m sure Warney is sharpening up his tongue in preparation for this series; he was never a great fan of Buchanan’s approach to the game. cAnterbury-bAnkstoWn bulldogs! Meekly gave up their finals chances against the Knights in Newcastle. They took 70 minutes to get on the board and the Knights were dominant across the park. The Doggies have the talent and more waiting in the wings as their Premier League and NYC teams are flying high but, they’ve got to be disappointed in this season’s efforts. WAllAbies! A reluctant jeer: A much better effort against the All Blacks though still not enough. That’s nine on the trot, and that is a nightmare run. It is time to drag that monkey off our back and give it a bit of a touch up. Clearly stung by his jeer in this column last week, Coach Deans was seen belting out the national anthem with conspicuous vigour prior to the match. bledisloe ref! “Crouch ... touch ...... pause........ engage!”, then take some time out of the game to give a little tutorial on packing a scrum to 16 of the blokes who, given they are international level Rugby Union forwards, presumably need it the least in the world, then: “Crouch ... touch ...... pause........ engage!” ad infinitum. At one scrum in the second half, prior to the hit, a voice piped up from the Kiwi second row: “Aw get on with ut!” seems it wasn’t just me! I’m a firm believer in the idea that the best refereeing occurs when you don’t notice the referee, that bloke was all over the game.

Hip hip hooray for horses! Words and pictures by CHRIS BENNETTS

Orange riding for the disabled recently held a party to celebrate the horses’ birthday! a number of kids gathered at the Clifton grove site to ride horses, eat great party food and sing a great version of ‘Happy Birthday’, which the horses seemed to appreciate! The day also acted as an open day for the centre, which provides people with a disability the opportunity to ride and enjoy all the activities connected with horse riding. The horses and ponies were certainly spoilt on their birthday, being fed carrots, getting patted and groomed and generally receiving plenty of birthday attention!

Members of the Cowra rda also came along to help with the festivities. Orange riding for the disabled’s founder, reg golding, was pleased with the day telling us “its unique for the kids, they really love coming out here and being involved with the horses. We mount around 3000 kids a year and they all get a kick out of it. it’s something we are very proud of”. Senior Coach Barbara edge said she is proud of the group of young riders “Our disabled children are amazing really in the way they overcome difficulties, i would like the general public to become aware of it and also get more people involved.” Three cheers to the horses and also all those involved with the Orange rda!

Teaching parents: Gus Villablanca, Graham McLennan, Brett McLeod, Glenn Reid, Pat Farrelly and Angie Phinn at a recent meeting Focus on the Family to introduce their program to Orange A pArent is the greatest influence on a child’s life, which is why it’s so important for parents to show their kids good values through their own behaviour. An organisation called Focus on the Family Australia (FFA) is trying to educate parents on these topics, and they’re coming to the Central West with their ‘How to Drug Proof Your Kids’ program. The program was developed in Australia in 1999 and is all about teaching teens as well as their parents about alcohol and drug use and abuse and the effects of drugs on an adolescent’s brain.

FFA CEO, Brett McLeod, visited Orange recently and is trying to spread the word to get schools and community groups involved in this program, which talks a lot about how kids observe their parents behaviours and base their own behaviours on this. Getting involved in the program means that FFA trained course deliverers will come to your school or group and spend the day talking to teenagers about drug and alcohol use and abuse, and then in the evening they will have a starter seminar with the teenager’s parents. The first seminar involves helping parents connect with their children so they can talk to them about

drugs and alcohol. If parents are keen after this first session they can come back for more sessions. The program has been used in schools all over Sydney but this is the first time it’s come over the Blue Mountains. It is filled with credible facts researched by Deakin University, and Brett McLeod says it is a great way for parents to learn how to do the best job they can in raising their kids. If you would like to get your school or community group involved in How to Drug Proof Your Kids then visit the FFA website at www. families.org.au or call Josie on 1300 300 361.

International success for Curves! By CHRIS BENNETTS A mAssive pAt on the bAck this week goes to Curves of Orange for being the official winner of the 12th Annual Curves International Food Drive! Curves are the world’s largest fitness franchise, and were pleased to announce that Orange won the Drive with a very impressive total of 2,185 kilos of food. All food collected will benefit The Salvation Army and Animals in Need. Curves Orange is planning to donate the winning prize money to charity, namely the “South Sudan

Educates Girls” organisation which is dedicated to the rebuilding of Sudan and primarily, to the education of young girls. Orange Curves franchise manager Val Myott could not be happier with the effort “Our members have generous hearts so it’s no surprise to me that they rallied behind the food drive, we set a goal of collecting 2,000 kilograms of food and we met that goal! I am really proud of our ladies.” “Curves and our members are delighted to help our community; the Food Drive is an excellent program that fits perfectly with the Curves philosophy:

promoting the health of the whole woman. The opportunity for our members to give back to the Orange community promotes the spirit of giving.” The Food Drive was incredibly successful all over the world with an amazing 237,878 kilos of food collected. Australia was the winning country overall, with 81,553 kilograms of food closely followed by the Netherlands and the UK. Curves Orange would like to thank everyone who contributed to the food drive efforts this year, and for putting Orange on the international stage! Congratulations to all involved!

FEEDBACK Dear Editor I just wanted to say a huge thanks to the organisers behind the Lachlan Valley Steam Trains that departed Orange on the weekend as part of Frost Fest. We took two very excited little boys on the first train leaving Saturday and then we went back twice to stand beside the rails and watch it steam by. The driver made sure he tooted the whistle and the boys loved it! What an awesome sight it was. We will definitely be going on the next one! Regards, Nina

LAUGH BREAK

During one “generation gap” quarrel with his parents, young Michael cried, “I want excitement, adventure, money, and beautiful women. I’ll never find it here at home, so I’m leaving. Don’t try and stop me!” With that, he headed toward the door. His father rose and followed close behind. “Didn’t you hear what I said? I don’t want you to try and stop me.” “Who’s trying to stop you?” replied his father. “If you wait a minute, I’ll go with you.” **** Recently the first draft of the Book of Genesis was discovered. It begins: “In the beginning the world was without form, and void. And God said, ‘Let there be light.’ And God separated the light from the dark. And did two loads of

Delivering community spirit By CHRIS BENNETTS If you have ever thought about volunteering some time to assist the local community, orange food Services can help you, help others. orange food services run a number of programs that help and serve the people of orange, including Meals on Wheels, accompanying elderly citizens on shopping trips, and a community restaurant program which takes clients to different restaurants or cafes every fortnight. anyone who has spare time and enjoys meeting new people can volunteer for a range of rewarding services. Local volunteer Catherine Quick joined the Meals on Wheels team after answering an ad in the paper calling for volunteers. “The best part of being involved with Meals on Wheels is meeting all the

clients and having a quick chat. You often find out interesting things about our town and its history” Catherine said. Catherine also involves local school children in the service. Brook Tilston is a young student from Bletchington Public School who joins Catherine once a month. “I like doing Meals on Wheels because it helps the community and it is a fun thing to do” Brook said. Deputy principle of Bletchington Public School, Ian Jones, said students learn valuable lessons by being involved “It’s a wonderful way for the kids to link with the community outside the Bletchington family. The children develop a sense of community involvement.” There are 750 Meals on Wheels organisations throughout australia, involving 80,000 volunteers and serving 50,000 clients. anyone wishing to get involved can contact orange food Services on 63938968

Higher Learning North of the Northern Distributor lies the Orange campus of Charles Sturt University. Charles Sturt Uni might be out-ofsight and out-of-mind to many people in Orange but the Orange Campus is very much a part of the community and an increasingly important and well-resourced part of Charles Sturt University’s network of campuses.

C

harles Sturt University has campuses in Orange, Bathurst, Wagga Wagga, Parramatta, Canberra, Dubbo, Goulburn, Albury-Wodonga and Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Its prolific Distance Education programmes reach even further. Charles Sturt University seeks to act as one large University with many campuses and the distance education courses mean people can study from anywhere with an internet connection. Distance education is booming in Australia offering people the chance to study from home making University education considerably less disruptive to students’ lives. The picturesque Orange campus is nestled in rolling hills and bushland between Leeds Parade and the Ophir Road north of Orange. Recent additions of architecturally-striking buildings dot the campus at Orange but, there are still traces of more humble beginnings too. Established in 1973 as an Ag College, I spoke to CSU Media Officer Holly Manning about those early days: ”there were only about 13 students to start with. It was a College back then, Orange Agricultural College. Started out as just men and then it grew, added a secretarial course so, there were women as well. Most of them actually met and married each other here and now they are sending their children here.” “We have Agricultural Business Management, that is the course that has remained from that time. Since then we really have become the health hub with Dentistry, Physio, Pharmacy, Clinical Sciences and Nursing is offered here, Distance Ed, as well. So, we are really focusing on the health aspect.” CSU Orange is primarily a science campus yet carries an array of courses from Agricultural and Wine Sciences, Veterinary Science, Environmental Science, and Exercise Science to Allied Health, Business, Education, and Theology. The other Charles Sturt University campuses offer just as broad a variety of courses. The viticulture operations at CSU Orange are long established with vines throughout the campus and a growing trophy cabinet of wine medals. Grapes from the Orange Campus go to CSU winery in Wagga Wagga where they are made into Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Shiraz. There is already a cellar door operation at the Wagga Wagga Campus and plans for one in Orange. The new Dentistry building is one of the aforementioned new architectural additions and is a stateof-the-art training facility, now offering dental services to the people of the local region. Holly says: “There is a dental clinic so people can actually ring up and book an appointment. We have two professional dentists here and the students are just next

week coming on board to help out. They’ll be cleaning. They are in second year, and by their fourth year they’ll doing the serious big stuff with a dentist right beside them, of course. It’s open to everyone, the general public. It is a really good system to have in place I think, to have a public service and be part of education.” CSU Dental and Oral Health Clinics at Orange and Wagga Wagga are now taking patients. Call 1300 278 642 for more information or to make an appointment. It is also hoped that CSU Clinics will soon be operational in Albury, Bathurst and Dubbo. I asked Holly why students should choose to study at CSU Orange, she says: “I think the best thing about this campus is the fact that it is so small and you get to know so many more people than just the people you are sitting next to in a lecture theatre. You get to

know your Academics really well and just get to meet a really diverse group of students, and the fresh air, the country, the feeling of the country.” There is room for 275 students in the on-campus residences with priority going to first-year students. Second year and onwards students generally find group accommodation in town. Holly says: “We’ve got a range of accommodations from relatively cheap all the way up to the new accommodation which is still not expensive, but the great thing about the accommodation is that there are different styles, from a boarding style to little village units and, it is just a great way for kids to get to know each other really well.” “The newer accommodations are terrific; they’ve got flat screen TVs, huge fridges and lots of room and some of them have their own shower facilities and en-suite facilities. Some people find that quite impor-

tant and if their parents are willing to pay, then that’s great!” says Holly. “We really want to contribute to the local community and so do the students do, they work in pharmacies and the like in town. They all work, and students boost the rental market in Orange too. Because the courses are so practical, hands-on and vocationally oriented, I think that means employers are aware that CSU kids can hit the ground running and they can start from day one knowing what they’ve got to do because they have got those practical skills and common sense behind them. I think that is the thing that CSU gives.” The Orange Campus of Charles Sturt University operates a policy of “Every Day is Open Day” so, if you are interested in learning more about Orange’s University, feel welcome to make a visit to the campus off Leeds Parade, just north of the Northern Distributor.

School’s

with Paul Tierney

Little Kids are Amazing! Primary school kids floor me sometimes. As a person who only teaches ‘big kids’ in the secondary, I marvel at some of the achievements by primary school students, not to mention the admiration and envy I have for the tolerance shown by primary school teachers. At our cross country carnival last term, I watched a 9 year old boy run his 2km course so fast that I reckon he would have beaten most adults – he ended up making it to the state level and coming 7th. He’s fairly oblivious as to his talents, and takes it all in his stride, which makes it even better, I reckon. Listening to Primary schools kids debating and doing public speaking nowadays is really inspiring. Back in the ‘olden’ days, we’d all rote-learn our speeches, not understanding half of it, and then regurgitate it all (without taking a breath). The wonders of Google and the like mean that most upper primary kids are extremely literate and eloquent when it comes to public speaking, not to mention confident and buzzwordsavvy. Many of them could look you in the eye and sell you a block of flats in Tassie, no kidding. Everyone would have to agree that the primary kids would run rings around most of us when it comes to technology. Navigating their way around websites, using mobile phones for texting and Twittering, downloading music onto iPods, connecting set-top boxes and digital TVs – they can do it all in half the time we take. This is really scary. Last week, a bunch of our primary kids displayed their ‘Scientia’ experiments in the library. This was an exhibition of scientific research done by the students in all sorts of areas of science. On display were findings about density and gravity, water conservation, shine and rough on cricket balls, ideal growing conditions for plants and seeds, air resistance and windmills, what cola really does to your insides, keeping kids focused in the classroom using music, and the list goes on. It was a remarkable display, but the best part was that the kids knew everything about their own experiments, it wasn’t a setup. They rattled off statistics about pressure, weather conditions, optimum temperatures, control situations, independent variables, hypotheses, results and conclusions. It was waaaaay too much stuff to have just rote-learnt. Phew, I was exhausted from just listening to these kids, and like the cross country runner above – it was all just in a day’s work for them. Yep, young kids are amazing, and the ‘gap’ between what they know and what I know is closing every single day. There is one thing I’m still ahead of them in though, and it’s something that they’ll never catch me on. On the radio at the moment, it’s “80s month”, and I’m absolutely whipping them in the guess-thesong-contest we have in the car each day! Hmmm … I wonder if it could be 80s month every month?

Burralgang Aboriginal Dance Group Every Thursday at Glenroi Community Centre, between 4 and 5pm during school term, a wonderful Aboriginal youth program takes place. The Burralgang Aboriginal dance group has been running for about three years, and 15 months ago the Orange City Council came on board to sponsor the female only, free program. Teacher for the group is Fluer Magick who hopes to start a male Aboriginal dance group in the future as well. So far this is the only program of its kind in Orange and covers a range of Aboriginal dances, such as Wiradjuri and other Contemporary Aboriginal dances. The group has become quite popular at local community functions and the girls tell me that they love performing in front of an audience. Each week there are three awards presented at the end of the class, ‘Dancer of the week’, ‘Participator of the week’ and ‘Most respectful of the week’. Young Katie says “I like the people that come to dancing and I love learning about my culture”. Teagan thinks “It’s a great opportunity for girls to get together and learn traditional dances that have been passed on down through the generations”. Angelique loves performing to an audience; Michelle and Nakita love making new friends; Maddison loves learning new dances and Sylvia likes Fluer, because she is really really nice and a really good teacher. It was lovely to see the girls enjoying their time together and that dancing was not the only lessons being taught. Any young lady interested in learning traditional Aboriginal dance and joining the group can do so by going along to the Glenroi Community Centre on Thursdays between 4 and 5pm. Joeys blitz garden win for environment Recent awarding to St Joseph’s Primary School, Blayney of the School Yard Blitz competition is the latest win for the environment at this ecologically-friendly school. The 120-pupil school will receive $5000 in plants and associated supplies for a special planting day on Friday, August 20. Sponsored by Cadia Mines, 15 mine workers will also be on hand to help setup the new garden and vegetable beds. “We want to get the parents and grandparents to come along, there’ll be a barbecue lunch and it will be a great way to promote our school,” Principal Gerard Davies said. “Each class will have its own vegetable

garden and will plant vegetables on the day. Each class also has its own vegetable mascot and have made up names for their workgroups like, ‘Popstar Potatoes’ and ‘Trouble-shooting Turnips’,” Mr Davies said. “We’ll also be planting some things that the children love to eat, such as strawberries” he said. The award is only the latest recognition for the environmental work at St Joseph’s. Food grown in the vegetable garden will be sold at the school canteen. The school worm farms will also be used to provide additional nutrients to the vegetable gardens. Water tanks will supply the necessary water requirements for the plants.

New surface for netball

Blayney Shire Council will resurface three of the courts at the Stillingfleet Netball Complex with $85,000 allocated for the upgrade. A decision had not yet been made on the type of surface with the tenders to suggest the best surface for the local climate.

Ph: 6361 3575 reception@ cwpn.com.au

The planting and nurturing of the garden, as well as providing practical lessons in life for the pupils, also provides genuine academic benefits, he believes. “This culture of sustainable living also provides many other wonderful learning opportunities for students in areas of numeracy, literacy, science and technology. It helps them put stuff they’re doing in class in context.” Caring for the environment is now a central learning issue at the school, which will be reinforced by the day. “The focus of the day will not only involve the beautification of the school but will reinforce the concepts of sustainable living and recycling to reduce our carbon footprint.” As part of the project, Mr Davies said pupils will be given a tomato plant to take home and look after during the Christmas school holidays. As well as a fully-functioning worm farm, the school also harvests rain water from the school roofs to use in the toilets and in watering the school gardens. “We also got a $50,000 grant from the Government and $40,000 from the BER (Building the Education revolution fund) for sustainable energy,” he said. This money was to install a series of solar panels at the school to generate up to 9.9 kilowatts of energy to cut the school’s electricity bill: “Anymore, and we’d have to licence as a power plant,” Mr Davies said. While everyone argues about how to save the environment and reduce greenhouse gases, St Joseph’s School is getting on with the job.

Design a Postcard competition Entries should be an original painting, drawing, or collage on the theme: “What does Cabonne mean to me?”

Two departments at Blayney IGA recently won their sections at the IGA Retailer of the Year awards on the Gold Coast recently.

Students who live in Cabonne are invited to enter a “Design a Postcard” competition for their local area.

Prizes will be $50 plus a certificate for first place, $25 plus a certificate for second place, and $15 and a certificate for third place in each category.

National win for Blayney IGA

Council plans to complete the upgrade in September–October with the three oldest, most dilapidated courts to receive the upgrades.

Cash prizes will be awarded by a judging panel in categories covering Preschool, Infants, Primary, and Secondary school.

Entries Close on October 29 and winners will be announced on November 16. Entry forms are available at Council offices, local libraries, and at: www.cabonne. nsw.gov.au. For more information, contact Stephanie Giumelli on 6392 3217 or email: council@cabonne.nsw.gov.au

The awards were judged on individual sections of each store with Blayney coming up trumps in the produce and general merchandise departments. It was the store’s first wins at the national level though they have previously picked up awards at regional and State level. The wining departments were judged on their products, presentation, standards and customer service.

Keep those dogs off streets!

The Blayney store recently underwent a $600,000 refurbishment with a new bakery and deli so as to remain competitive with the major chains that they directly compete against.

This follows complaints about the number of aggressive dogs threatening residents in the town. Blayney Shire Council’s ranger is on-call on the weekends and can be reached by phoning the council.

The store employs about 26 full-time and 120 casual staff and is one the major employers in the town.

Blayney Council has urged residents concerned about aggressive dogs roaming Blayney to contact Council’s ranger and report any unsupervised dogs.

The ranger works Monday–Friday from 7:30–5pm and regularly patrols Blayney’s streets. Owners of stray dogs are issued with warnings for first offences, $50 fines for second offences, and $100 fines for third offences. Dog owners were urged by Council to secure their dogs in their yard or keep them on leashes.

The finest hotel in the country By JOHN MILLER

The hoTel Canobolas represented the finest hotel in country NSW when it opened in 1939, with splendid accommodation and fine dining, as well as the customary bars and other hotel facilities, all run by professional staff. This photo shows a large dining room at the hotel all decked out with fine cutlery and crockery as well as flowers and finely-dressed waitresses in preparation for a function. The hotel was officially opened by Mayor Dr Wally Matthews on Wednesday, March 2, 1939 with special

guests being Sir Mark Sheldon, of the Tooheys company, which had built and operated the hotel. The Orange Leader newspaper stated after the occasion: “When Sir Mark Sheldon was a young man he built some castles in the air and often dreamed of the day when one of them materialised in Orange. That dream came true on Wednesday when the new Hotel Canobolas, which cost over 100,000 pounds, was officially opened. “Sir Mark invited almost 300 men and women to share his pride and happiness, and the big lounge where the ball took place was crowded.

“Sir Mark said, ‘In various quarters there has been criticism against the building of a hotel the size of the Hotel Canobolas in a country town. I and fellow directors of the firm believe that Orange is one of the coming cities of Australia and we have backed up that belief by putting a vast sum of money into this enterprise’. “Sir Mark told how he was a sonin-law of Thomas Dalton and how the friendship between the firm and the Dalton family had benefited both. ‘The Dalton family made this town but since then private enterprise has done very little’.”

Working as a secretary at an international airport, my sister had an office adjacent to where security temporarily holds suspects. One day security officers were questioning a man when they were suddenly called away on another emergency. To the horror of my sister and her colleagues, the man was left alone in the unlocked room. After a few minutes, the door opened, and he began to walk out. Summoning up her courage, one of the secretaries barked, “Get back in there, and don’t come out until you’re told!” The man scuttled back inside and slammed the door. When the security people returned, the woman reported what had happened. Without a word, an officer walked into the room and released one very frightened telephone repairman. **** A retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in nursing homes and hospitals went to one local hospital in Brooklyn and took his portable keyboard along. He told some jokes and sang some funny songs at patients’ bedsides. When he finished he said, in farewell, “I hope you get better.” One elderly gentleman replied, “I hope you get better, too.”

McGregor & Wright Sarah McGregor and Brad Wright from Orange were married at the historic St Jude’s Church in Bowral on April 24, 2010; the same church the bride’s Parents and Grandparents were married in years earlier. Sarah is the eldest daughter of Terry and Terri McGregor of Bowral, and Brad is the only son of Jim and Lyn Wright of Orange. Sarah and Brad met while working at WIN Television in Orange in 2003, Sarah as a journalist and Brad as a cameraman, and have since travelled overseas for a year for Brad to play cricket, and to travel throughout Europe. Not long after they returned from overseas, Brad asked Sarah’s father if he could marry her, the night before Sarah’s parents were due to go skydiving. Luckily, Terry said yes, and a week later during dinner one night at his parent’s place Brad proposed to Sarah. Attending Sarah on her wedding day was her sister, Maid of Honour Kate McGregor, and Bridesmaids Nicola Searle, her childhood friend, and Brodie Wright, the Groom’s sister. Brad was attended by his Best Man Adam Roweth, and Groomsmen John Gander and Trent Colley - all childhood friends. Following the ceremony, a reception for 124 guests was held at Centennial Vineyards in Bowral with guests travelling from as far as London to attend the celebrations. The couple honeymooned in Hawaii for two weeks, and have made their home in Orange. PHOTOGRAPHY BY SETH BUCHANAN. sethbuchanan.com.au

Hey hey Everyone, Been doing a little practice this week and touching up and adding things to my website - wwww.jasonbelmonte.com - it’s looking pretty cool (if I don’t say so myself ). I am always willing to hear suggestions though to make it better. Check it out and email me at belmo@jasonbelmonte.com with any ideas you have. I had a rather quiet week really, which I love. I’ve seen a few good flicks, one in particular was 'Inception' - WOW awesome movie. Hit the boxing ring with Bobby, played squash and caught up with friends and family. I’ve also come to realise that TIVO might be the greatest invention ever. Even better than the wheel :) For those who don’t know what TIVO is, it’s a system that records TV for you. But its so much more than that. It’s main purpose though is to record one show during the day. Judge Judy. Is there a better day time trashy TV show? I'm not sure, but I do know that I love it. I know it’s not cool, but every time she yells at the defendant "be quiet you stupid man" makes me laugh! One last thing anyone interested in following my career a little closer, you can find more about me and my bowling at either - www.facebook.com/belmofanpage - OR - Twitter me a Jbelmo - Till next week - Be good - Cheers Belmo
