KINGSBOROUGH BEACON Building a Brighter Future!

A monthly philanthropy newsletter from the Office of Institutional Advancement | September 2023

WELCOME Full Circle: A Message from Dr. Nancy Lee Sánchez-Badillo I am proud to introduce the Kingsborough Beacon, the inaugural newsletter from the Office of Institutional Advancement, focusing on the power of philanthropy here at KCC. In the months to come, expect to see compelling stories from generous scholarship donors, standout alumni, remarkable student scholars, announcements for major events, key initiatives and much more! As the recently appointed Vice-President of Institutional Advancement at Kingsborough Community College, I am most proud of returning to the place where my journey began and my dreams first blossomed. The concept of “It takes a Village” was ingrained in me by the professors, tutors, fellow classmates, and administrators who came together to ensure KCC was a welcoming and supportive oasis. A place where I would be challenged to think critically, and remain an engaged citizen of the campus and my community. The lessons I learned from Kingsborough have stayed with me during the last 28 years, and each step in my career has been propelled by the investment this remarkable college made in me. It is an honor to come “full circle” in my Kingsborough journey! In the 2023-24 academic year, I look forward to engaging with the entire college community, the borough of Brooklyn, the city and state of New York, corporations, private and public institutions and anyone interested in the diversity and talent that reside in this gem by the sea. It will be my mission to define and meet the needs of Kingsborough students, faculty, staff, its leadership and the campus as a whole. The Kingsborough Beacon will also be a two-way street; the advancement team and I want to hear from you! Whether you are a generous donor, valued faculty, committed staff member, or another proud Kingsborough alum like me, we encourage you to share your story of what Kingsborough means to you and why you support the College. I hope you continue to read Kingsborough Beacon in the months to come, and I also hope to see you at our Seaside Splash Fundraising Gala on June 6, 2024 to celebrate our 60th Anniversary! Sincerely, Nancy Lee Sánchez-Badillo, Ed.D. Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Kingsborough is 60! 60th Anniversary Celebrations began with Founders Day on September 12 From an indoor celebration event honoring the founding fathers to outdoor festivities, including food, games and a delectable birthday cake, Founders Day was an incredible success! Those in attendance learned about the founding of Kingsborough Community College, witnessed receipts of various proclamations from public officials and culminated with celebrating the college's 60th birthday. Special thank you to NYS Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, NYS Senator Roxanne Persaud, NYS Assemblyman Michael Novakhov and Brooklyn Community Board 15 Chair Theresa Scavo!

Scholarship of the Month Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation Student Emergency Grant Fund For the past seven years, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation has generously supported an emergency grant fund at Kingsborough Community College. The Petrie grant is intended for KCC students who are facing dire, short-term financial emergencies that threaten their ability to continue their studies. Examples of emergencies include, but are not limited to: • Loss of job by student or family member • Fire, flooding or other natural disaster affecting living quarters • Theft of computer, textbooks or other academic equipment • Medical bills for uninsured or uncovered events • Eyeglasses or essential dental work • Travel for death of immediate family member • Homelessness or impending homelessness due to loss of housing or temporary inability to pay rent/mortgage • Loss of child care • Need for season-appropriate clothing, or clothing necessary for work or job interview • On-campus food services for student and immediate family members • Transportation fees and fares to school or medical appointments Thanks to the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation’s generosity, nearly 300 talented and hardworking KCC students have received the financial lifelines they needed to overcome emergencies that would have otherwise forced them to drop out of school through no fault of their own. Students may apply HERE. Interested in starting your own scholarship? Contact Daniel La Noue, Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving, at 718.368.6540 or daniel.lanoue@kbcc.cuny.edu.
