ANNUAL REPORT
is dropping out of high school. In this report, you will learn how Kingsborough is building new pathways to college by taking our classes, workshops, and services into our neighborhoods, thanks to collaborations with schools and community-based organizations. In the months ahead, I hope to engage public libraries in this initiative, and I plan to host Community Nights to reach out to more schools and nonprofits so we can expand this highly effective network.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends of Kingsborough: I am delighted to share our 2018 annual report with you. This fall, I was honored to become Kingsborough’s seventh president. Although new to this campus, I am a longtime member of the CUNY family, most recently as provost and a senior vice president at Bronx Community College, and earlier as an administrator and faculty member at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. I’ve spent my first few months here exploring the campus, surprising students and staff alike by wandering into labs, classrooms, and offices. I’m on a mission to meet everyone! Kingsborough is Brooklyn’s only community college, and what an inspiring community it is, with a strong academic tradition, culture of service, and unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our students’ exciting achievements and dynamic innovations by our faculty and staff continue to attract national attention, which is why the Aspen Institute for Community College Excellence has once again identified Kingsborough as a top 10 finalist competing for their $1 million award. While we are proud of this accolade, our top priority is student success. For many young people in our community, the first roadblock
You will discover in these pages the many ways that our faculty, staff, and students are creating, serving, and strengthening community, both on and off campus. Kingsborough is committed to civic engagement – in fact, we were one of the first community colleges to make it a requirement for graduation. We recognize that it is our responsibility to care for each other – at our college, in our own neighborhoods, and around the world. This commitment to civic responsibility speaks to my heart. As a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village, I have helped build homes and hope for families in Africa, Asia, and South America for the past 12 years. As president of this college, I want to lead by example, and that means in the months and years to come, you will find me working and serving community alongside our remarkable students and dedicated staff. Over one million students have studied at Kingsborough since we opened our doors in 1963. Our faculty, students, and alumni are changing lives and making a difference every day in fields like health care, teaching, law enforcement, technology, and science. We are able to further that work due to the generosity of the many individuals, foundations, and corporations listed in this publication who have invested in the future of our students. Together, we make Brooklyn an even better place to live, work, and learn. On behalf of the community of Kingsborough, I thank you for your continued support.

To Your Health Kingsborough is training hundreds of employees for New York’s fastest-growing job market: health care. This sector employs 1 out of 7 workers. Over 60% are allied health workers – medical professionals who are not doctors, dentists, or nurses. Statewide, jobs in allied health are expected to increase by 13.1% between 2014-2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our graduates work in their communities every day to prevent, diagnose, and treat injuries and illnesses.
Prof. Richard Fruscione trains students on how to maintain a sterile environment.
UNSUNG HEROES OF THE OPERATING ROOM: Training Surgical Technologists
W
hen Richard Fruscione talks about surgical technology, his enthusiasm is infectious – which is ironic, since he’s talking about fighting infections. “When well-trained surgical technologists are in the operating room, infection rates are lower,” says Fruscione, the program director. “That means patients are safer and health costs are lower. That’s how we make an impact on our community.” Surgical technologists prepare patients and equipment for surgery and assist with procedures. 4
Picture that person in scrubs holding the correct instrument as the surgeon says: “Scalpel!” That’s the unsung hero of the operating room, Fruscione says. “Infections can be life-threatening. Our job is to minimize that risk. We make a difference every day – with every surgery and every patient.” Students train in classrooms and perform mock surgeries in simulation labs, where they learn how to maintain sterile conditions under the watchful eyes of experienced faculty. “In class, we talk about

repetition, discipline, order, and anticipation,” Fruscione explains. “We need to understand, prepare, and handle thousands of instruments. We have to anticipate everything the surgeon will do.” Recent graduates had 100% pass rates on the national certification exam and 85% are employed. “When you’re in the operating room, when the lights go on overhead and you are standing next to the surgeon -- there’s nothing like it,” Fruscione says. “The intimacy of that teamwork is amazing.”
DOING WHAT YOU LOVE CAN HEAL YOU: Recreation & Recreational Therapy Tasha loved playing her double bass throughout high school, but her first try at college ended on a sour note. She dropped out and entered the workforce. “Then I got hit by a car when I was 25. Surviving that accident gave me a new perspective,” she recalls. During recovery, Tasha tapped back into her creativity. “I wrote, I painted, I composed songs, and I created and bound books. I made the arts part of my healing process. I saw that doing what you love can heal you,” she says. That experience ultimately led her to study recreational therapy at Kingsborough. Recreational therapy promotes health and wellness through leisure activities like yoga, adapted sports, cooking, crafts, gardening, art, and music. Recreational therapists work with people coping with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and outpatient clinics. Kingsborough also offers a recreation major, training students for leadership in parks and recreation, YMCAs, as well as community and senior centers.
Professor Mary Lou Fierle notes the growing synergy between the two fields as recreation venues become more accessible and inclusive, and offer more therapeutic programming. “Play makes everyone feel better, physically and emotionally,” says Fierle. “When you enjoy what you’re doing, that’s motivating.”
Prof. Mary Lou Fierle and students, including Tasha (far right), combine an alphabet game with movement in a recreational therapy class.
COUNSELORS ON THE FRONTLINES OF AN EPIDEMIC: Chemical Dependency & Substance Abuse Counselors trained at Kingsborough are working on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic – the worst drug crisis in American history, according to public health officials. Between 2012-2016, deaths related to prescription opioids nearly doubled in New York; heroin deaths more than doubled, and deaths related to synthetic opioids (especially fentanyl) increased ten-fold. Kingsborough is the only New York City-based community college to offer a two-year degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling, as well as a certificate program in Substance Abuse Counseling. “Our training prepares students for so many career opportunities,” says Dr. Monica Joseph, program director. “They can work in hospitals and schools and human resource departments. They can work in prevention and outreach. Many will work in the criminal justice system and in non-profits.” Training begins with the nature of addiction, and how chemicals affect the brain and body. Students then learn how to interact with clients, develop individual and group counseling skills, and discuss legal and
ethical issues relevant to the field. Each student also completes two internships at state-licensed, community-based programs. “Many classroom discussions focus heavily on concerns related to the opioid epidemic, including the stigma associated with addiction and the impact this is having on families and neighborhoods,” Dr. Joseph notes. “Our students are eager to go back to their communities so they can make a difference where it matters the most.”

FULL CIRCLE: Kingsborough Alum Directs Physical Therapist Assistant Program Dr. Michael Mattia was a high school student in Brooklyn when he tumbled into his career. “I injured my knee playing football,” he recalls with a chuckle. “Nobody wants that. But then I received physical therapy, and I realized this would be an excellent career for me.” He graduated Kingsborough’s Pre-Physical Therapy Program, earning an Associate of Science with honors in 1978. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, a Master of Science in PT from LIU Brooklyn, and ultimately a Doctor of Physical Therapy at Temple University. For over 38 years, Dr. Mattia has been a dynamic member of Brooklyn’s health care community, and recently ended a four-year term as president of the New York Physical Therapy Association, which has 7,000 members. In spring 2017, he returned to Kingsborough to direct the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. “I’ve come full circle, and it’s very gratifying,” Dr. Mattia says. KCC’s PTA program prepares students to assist with physical therapy for patients recovering from conditions that affect movement and function like stroke, bone fractures, and back pain. In state-of-the-art simulation labs, students operate critical equipment used for therapeutic exercises, monitoring vital signs and assessing body mechanics, and practice the hands-on skills necessary to perform their roles. Students also complete two clinical rotations in hospitals, rehab centers, or other professional settings. On average, over 80% of Kingsborough graduates pass their national board exams on the first try, making them eligible to work in any state – but nearly all are working in New York City. “Our students are very prepared to enter the health care workforce upon completion of our program. We have 100% employment of our graduates who seek employment,” Dr. Mattia says. “That’s the best testament to the quality of our program.”

Helping New Yorkers Tackle
A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE M ore than 150 industryrecognized health coaches are helping Brooklyn residents to keep fit and stay well, thanks to an innovative training program developed by Kingsborough in collaboration with a network of community hospitals, allied health organizations, and the local health care union. Doctors often advise people with chronic diseases to change their behaviors so they can be healthier, but that’s easier said than done. “Health coaches are trained to help people make lifestyle changes that are realistic and sustainable,” says Dr. Jose Eduardo Nanin, KCC community health professor and Kingsborough’s coordinator of Community Health Workforce Initiatives. “We try to empower people to meet their own wellness goals.” Demand for health coaches is growing, spurred by federal and state efforts to reduce health care costs for Medicaid patients as well as the general population. People who successfully manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes are much less likely to visit hospitals and emergency rooms.
supervisors observe and assess classroom activities, including role playing. “Health coaches motivate patients by listening to their needs,” says Nancy Nemorin, KCC health education instructor. Nemorin co-wrote the health coach training curriculum with Audrey Lum, chief clinical officer at Union Health Center, a nationally recognized patient-centered medical home in New York City, funded by NYC Small Business Services with support from the Petrie Foundation. Nemorin explains that health coaches “don’t tell people what to do – we meet them where they are.” The certificate program was created in part as a response to New York’s $6-billion commitment over a 5-year period to improve health care for Medicaid patients and reduce avoidable hospital visits by at least 25%. Each trainee who completes the 90-hour certificate program through
Kingsborough Continuing Education can take the course as a nonmatriculated student, earning 6 credits that are transferable and appear on a transcript. This supports Kingsborough’s long-term strategy to build stackable credit-bearing models for incumbent health care workers to receive the associate of science degree in community health and advance their careers. Kingsborough’s key partners in this training initiative include the New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare; Local 1199SEIU; and Community Care of Brooklyn, a health care delivery system for Brooklyn’s Medicaid population managed by Maimonides Medical Center. “Our training program helps the community in two ways,” Nanin says. “We’re meeting a demand for trained health coaches, and we’re also providing a great opportunity for people in our own communities to get better jobs and earn higher salaries.”
To meet this emerging need in the workforce, Kingsborough worked with partners in the field to launch the Health Coach certificate program in summer 2016. The program retrains incumbent health care workers, such as medical assistants, for enhanced careers and prepares newly hired health coaches to excel. The curriculum focuses on new models of care, communication and patient engagement techniques, and cultural competency, in addition to coursework on wellness through chronic disease prevention and treatment. It also includes a practicum where

Nurturing Young Fathers

eynaldo loved to draw and dreamed of studying graphic design, but “I’d been out of school for six years, and I had two baby girls to support,” he recalls. “I was nervous at first. I didn’t know if college would work for me. Then I found out about the Fatherhood Academy at Kingsborough.” The CUNY Fatherhood Academy is free for fathers who are under 30 and unemployed, or underemployed. The Academy offers two programs – one prepares young fathers for the state high school equivalency (HSE) exam, while the College Prep track focuses on college readiness. By providing education, mentoring, and career guidance, the Academy supports young fathers as they work to improve their financial and family stability. Alissa Levine, community outreach programs manager at Kingsborough’s Office of Continuing Education, says many fathers “feel the Academy might be their last chance to get their HSE/TASC and go on to college.” Fathers meet three days a week for 16 weeks, taking academic classes in the morning and parenting workshops in the afternoon. “It’s like boot camp, but with really supportive staff,” Levine says. The Academy offers transportation and food assistance. Gift cards and stipends reward high attendance. Rey praises his teachers and gives the parenting workshops high marks, too: “You add to your skills – how to handle tantrums, how to communicate better when your kids get older.” Fathers say one of the best things about Kingsborough’s Academy is that they are treated like college students, with full use of campus facilities. “You get comfortable on campus. Now college seems possible,” notes Rey. When program graduates apply for college or vocational training, the Academy covers their application fees. In 2018, Rey enrolled as a graphic design student at Kingsborough: “When I told my girls, ‘Daddy’s going to college,’ one of them said, ‘I want to be an artist just like you!’ ”
In Service to THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED
N
elson was at Camp Lejeune when he started preparing for his transition from U.S. Marine to New York college student. “I had my target, I had my objective, I did my research, and I still had a lot of questions,” the 11-year veteran recalls, chuckling. He was relieved to have all those questions answered by staff at Kingsborough’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs (MAVA). “We talked, we emailed. They told me everything,” Nelson said. “By the time I got to campus, I had numbers, I had names, and I had points of contact. It was all set up. I appreciated that. I’m a Marine, I served 11 years. Military life is all about order. That mindset doesn’t end when you take off the uniform.” MAVA serves active military, veterans and their dependents, spouses, and survivor populations by connecting students and prospective students to state and federal educational benefits as well as a wealth of on-campus resources, including tutoring, career counseling and internships. MAVA also helps students create community through activities, events, and
constant communication. Students also enjoy MAVA’s veterans lounge – a comfortable place to do homework, socialize, or relax between classes. Scores of veterans contact MAVA each month. Many stop the office to chat with staff because “making this transition isn’t easy, and a little encouragement goes a long way,” says Tara Yarczower, MAVA’s director. “I’m deeply moved by the stories these students share with me. Some have suffered deep losses that leave you wondering where they get the courage to keep going. I couldn’t ask for a better group of students to work with, and I am so proud of all they accomplish.” Nelson started classes in March and he plans to apply for Kingsborough’s highly competitive Physical Therapist Assistant program. He’s proud to have a 4.0 GPA and is quick to credit MAVA staff for their support. College life is like tag, he says – when the game gets crazy, you go back to base: “With MAVA, I’ve always got a base…and someone’s always there to point me back in the right direction.”

A Return on Investment
K
ingsborough’s accounting majors are vying for the chance to do other people’s tax returns – for free. They are volunteering for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA’s mission is to provide free tax-return help for people with low incomes, limited English skills, and/or disabilities. Lecturer Cesar Castope (pictured left) trains students to be IRS-certified volunteers, so they can assist eligible community residents. This year, VITA volunteers also helped fellow students through the College’s Single Stop office.
Students don’t receive college credit for this program, but they benefit from free tax-preparation training and over 40 hours of work experience. “VITA can be a stepping-stone to a paid position,” Castope notes. “This seminar was so popular, we had to bring extra chairs in the classroom.” VITA volunteers also enjoy serving their community. After leaving China at age 18 and moving here alone, Jenny found it hard to adjust – until she enrolled at Kingsborough. When she heard about VITA in her accounting club, Jenny instantly volunteered. “I felt very proud to help,” she says. “I could engage with people and help solve their problems. Their appreciation and smiles were the best reward.”
Enriching the Student Experience
K
ingsborough students see the diversity of Brooklyn reflected in each other. Representing 142 national backgrounds and speaking 73 languages, they are citizens of the world, training to work in a globalized society. Now the College is creating a lively new hub for intercultural programs and activities that connect students to each other and to our community.
Conveniently located near the main cafeteria, the hub also makes vital student services available on a walkin basis – from academic and career counseling to financial aid and nutrition. “We are up and running, and there’s so much enthusiasm for our programs,” says Helen-Margaret Nasser, SU&IC director. “As the center expands, we’ll be able to do even more.”
In November 2017, State Senator Roxanne Persaud and Interim President Peter Cohen cut the ribbon to our new Engaged Kingsborough Hub and Garden Plaza, completing the first phase of our new Student Union & Intercultural Center (SU&IC). The project was supported in part by a $600,000 grant from Albany, secured by Senator Persaud. This year’s intercultural programs included “Encounters,” a series of talks by faculty and community members that ranged from a professor’s experiences in North Korea to a local resident’s role in liberating Dachau as a Jewish American soldier during World War II. Students have also sampled healthy foods at cooking demonstrations and “shopped” at a pop-up boutique offering free professional clothing perfectly suited for internship and job interviews at the hub. 10

Now in Your Neighborhood
D
ropout rates are climbing at Brooklyn’s underserved high schools, leading to higher unemployment and lower wages for young adults in our community. Kingsborough is working to reverse that trend by taking support services directly to young people in the neighborhoods where they live – a successful strategy developed through the College’s innovative coalition of communitybased organizations and schools. Kingsborough: Now in Your Neighborhood makes a wide range of resources available off campus including admissions information, financial aid workshops for parents, college preparation and mentoring. “This is exactly the kind of work we need to be doing in the community, beyond the college walls,” says Brian Mitra, dean of student affairs. In spring 2017, Mitra was tasked with reaching out to community groups and schools to help tackle the dropout crisis and create more pathways to college enrollment. His first call was to Good Shepherd Services, an organization that has helped New York City schools reduce their overall dropout rate by 50% over the past decade. Mitra and Rachel Forsyth, senior division director for Good Shepherd, agreed that Brooklyn’s dropout rates are still too high, and many teens who do graduate don’t enroll in college or drop out. “We looked for new ways to make the transition to college easier,” Mitra said. Their first step was to offer Kingborough’s Career & Life Planning class in neighborhood venues through Good Shepherd’s
LifeLink program. Students assess their interests and aptitudes, research careers, create resumes, and take part in a mock interview, says Marisa Joseph, director of career services. “When students come in the door, they have no idea what they want to do,” she says. “It’s so rewarding when you see that lightbulb go on, and they start setting goals for their education and careers.” Students receive one credit for the course if they enroll at Kingsborough; the College and Good Shepherd help with the CUNY application process. The LifeLink-Kingsborough connection convinced student Brian G. to try college this year. After graduating from an alternative high school in 2016, he says, “I never thought about college. I wasn’t motivated.” Now he’s studying criminal justice at Kingsborough, hoping to become a detective. Kingsborough and Good Shepherd expanded their initiative this year by creating the Brooklyn
Opportunity Network (BKON), a growing coalition of community organizations, colleges, and schools working together on persistence, retention, college completion, and student success. One of BKON’s first achievements was to secure space in Kingsborough’s College Success Center. Now each member organization has a case manager on campus, helping students succeed. This is crucial, Forsyth says: “Students have one place where they can reliably meet with counselors.” BKON members include Good Shepherd Services, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, Olympus Academy, Achievement First High School, Center for Family Life, and Red Hook Initiative. “We truly listen to each other about the obstacles our students face, and strive to design a better system of supports,” Forsyth says. “It’s been an exhilarating process.”

President’s Faculty Innovation Awards | 2017-2018 The President’s Faculty Innovation Awards serve as seed funding for transformative projects, especially collaborative projects that further the strategic priorities of the College, which can be successfully scaled. This year’s winners focused on use and assessment of culturally responsive teaching strategies, aligned with the College’s focus on equity and student success; innovative and collaborative projects that engage external partners (e.g., business community, other educational institutions, non-profit organizations); and implementation and assessment of high impact practices, such as learning communities, faculty mentored research, and community engagement. Kingsborough Supporters The Kingsborough community extends beyond our campus borders. We have a responsibility to the borough of Brooklyn, and we are proud of the role we are playing in its revitalization. A gift to the Kingsborough Community College Foundation, Inc. – a charitable 501(c)3 organization that exists solely to benefit Kingsborough – will fund scholarships and support faculty and curriculum development. But it supports more than an institution: it supports a community. We are pleased to recognize the following donors, whose gifts have helped many Kingsborough students realize their dreams. The 1963 Society recognizes donors who make an annual leadership-level gift at one of the giving society levels. Membership in the giving society allows donors to play an important role in the financial well-being of Kingsborough and to make a powerful statement and commitment to our mission of providing an affordable, high quality, transformational education to its students. Society members enjoy a number of benefits, including invitations to members-only events and special college communications. For all levels, membership is determined by gifts in a fiscal year, which spans July 1 to June 30. Membership benefits increase according to the size of one’s gift.
