A LE T T E R FROM T H E PR E S I D E NT

Dear Friends of Kingsborough:

People give to people, not to causes. It’s hard to imagine a better cause than giving to support educational opportunities for all. More than 16,000 full- and part-time students come to Kingsborough each year—many the first in their families to attend college, many new to our country, and many new to our way of life. Often, they are financially unprepared for the challenge of seeking an education. With more than 70 percent of these students receiving financial aid, 60 percent of our students coming from homes with annual incomes of less than $20K, the Kingsborough Community College Foundation is a vital lifeline for many of them, and is often the resource through which your generosity is shared to meet a need. Yet, they seek their piece of the American dream as they train for jobs, earn transfer credits, or enhance professional skills. Through your generosity, you ensure that our students have the very best chances of success, which we see through their determination and commitment to their studies, very often balancing other challenges of family, work, and other responsibilities. With a committed faculty and staff to serve our 16,000-plus students annually, plus an additional 22,000 in continuing education and workforce development programs, the breadth of work at KCC is vast. We all work collectively to make sure that our students’ time here at Kingsborough results in a path toward continued education or directly to the workforce. The complexity of it all is sometimes difficult to fully comprehend. What you, as our friends and supporters understand, however, is the significance of how doing something extraordinary for others can result in far greater rewards and accomplishments for those on the receiving end. You are the ones who touch their hearts and will inspire them to forge ahead in spite of the challenges because they know that Kingsborough and its team of supporters will not let them down.

Every gift made to the KCC Foundation celebrates these special-and for some-very personal connections. This one-time biennial report, which covers FY2015 and FY2016 shows the inspired giving and increasing generosity of you, our friends, to whom we are infinitely grateful. This year and every year, we thank you for all you do to support Kingsborough’s vital educational mission and our amazing students. Your support is changing the world—one heart, one job, and one higher education degree at a time. We look forward to strengthing our partnerships with you and to the continued sharing of news and successes of our students.

Innovative AssistMe® App Aids in Student Retention

S

ixty percent of KCC students come from households with incomes below $20K. Often, they are working part-time if they are working at all, taking care of their families, and as a result have difficulty making ends meet. Many of our students are immigrants, or are the first in their families to attend college; for a large number of students, English is their second language.

Too often, some of our students are forced to drop out before actually taking courses in their majors, because they have exhausted their financial aid taking remedial courses. Fifty percent of our students leave because they owe tuition, and an additional 25 percent leave due to loss of financial aid. Based on financial hardships, many leave before they can graduate, and others opt to enter the workforce, often at lower wages because they lack a degree. KCC data indicated that students left for reasons other than academics, so we convened a series of focus groups to gain a better understanding. The top four reasons included: tuition; the cost of textbooks; transportation, and access to food for themselves and their families. The challenge was to find a way of connecting them to the appropriate resources so they could stay in school.

KCC developed the AssistMe® app, a unique technological intervention tool, and the first of its kind within the City University of New York system. This innovative student-initiated app— downloadable to smartphones, also accessible by computer—allows students to communicate directly with a KCC staff person who connects them to the appropriate campus resources. Buttons on the AssistMe® app include Tuition Assistance, Textbook Assistance, Transportation, Food, Counseling and Wellness, and Childcare, among others. Students can request specific assistance by providing a brief description of their concern or need. In addition to these tangible, financial assistance options, students can also receive academic support, as well as counseling and wellness support, and be provided with appropriate childcare, housing, and residency referrals to additional resources as needed. The App facilitates access to immersion classes such as developmental math—with which the majority of students struggled—allowing them to take advantage of intensive math boot camp classes before financial aid was impacted, so they could enter their majors without worrying about losing their financial aid. The app would track the students’ use from fall entry through their graduation to see whether the interventions, or focused academic advisement interventions had an impact on their continued enrollment and subsequent completion.

Kingsborough selected as an expansion site for CUNY Fatherhood Academy

K

ingsborough Community College was selected as an expansion site for the CUNY Fatherhood Academy (CFA) in 2015. A grant gave Kingsborough the added capacity to help approximately 40 young fathers in the CFA, prepare for, and enroll in college, and/or training programs.

The Office of the Mayor and the Center for Economic Opportunity provided an additional $1 million to the two sites through the Mayor’s Young Men’s Initiative (YMI). Kingsborough’s extensive experience with similar programs and populations, its strong program model, and a commitment to providing significant leveraged resources contributed to its selection as an expansion site.

development, college readiness, and career exploration and preparation among unemployed and underemployed fathers. The program also provides referrals to many on-campus resources including the Men’s Resource Center, Single Stop, Career Services, and the Child Development Center. Participants, who are recruited through KCC’s relationship with community-based organizations, may receive benefits screening, money management resources, legal assistance, and childcare, as well as health and nutritional information. CEWD KCC’s Fatherhood Academy and the two other CUNY expansion sites are funded by the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City’s federally funded Social Innovation grant. A total funding of $2.1 million in 2015 aimed to serve more than 200 fathers over a year at three CFA sites.

CFA, a program of the NYC YMI, is a free, 16-week high school equivalency and college preparatory program for resident New York City fathers who range in age from 18 to 28, and 18 to 30 respectively. The CFA program, housed in the KCC’s Center for Economic and Workforce Development (CEWD), promotes responsible parenting, personal growth and

John Wallace Visits Kingsborough; Shoots Hoops with President Herzek Former New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors forward, and Syracuse star player John Wallace visited Kingsborough’s Athletics Department pep rally at the start of the season, and delivered a motivational message to the men’s and women’s basketball teams ahead of the season opener games. Wallace’s visit generated excitement when he took the court to shoot around with President Herzek and the coaching staff. He later addressed the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and shared some of his experiences as a studentathlete and NBA player, providing advice on commitment, determination, and the importance of maintaining high grades. “Anytime someone who inspires others comes for a visit, we are all better just because of their presence,” said KCC Athletics Director Damani Thomas. “John’s visit was a definite boost to our student athletes and the program; we welcome him anytime.” One key point to Wallace’s message revolved around his work ethic and discipline. The former McDonald’s AllAmerican, who was a sociology major, emphasized the importance of being able to juggle basketball and academics, while also adjusting to fatherhood at age 19. “Coming from a single parent home, living in public housing with no father figure around, all the odds were against me,” said Wallace. “But I knew that I had to be responsible for me and my family, and it was up to me to make sure that I would succeed; so there could be no slacking off. Once you make a commitment to practicing 10 hours a day, you stick to it; if it requires 10 hours of studying a day, then that’s what you do.” KINGSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE | ANNUAL REPORT 2015/2016

CO L L EG E H I G HLIGHTS All Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars have financial need, excellent academic accomplishments, leadership skills, awards, extraordinary service to others and perseverance in the face of adversity. The Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides up to $40,000 a year for up to three years of study at a four-year school, is the largest private scholarship for students transferring from two-year community colleges to four-year baccalaureate institutions in the country.

Kate Maziarz

Najlaa Bouras

Kingsborough Community College students continue to win Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships Kingsborough Community College students increasingly win Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. Kingsborough’s pride grows each year as we extend our list of Jack Kent Cook Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship winners. With Najlaa Bouras ‘15 and Kate Maziarz ‘16, this brings the tally of Jack Kent Cook scholarship winners to four in three years. Moroccan-born Najlaa Bouras graduated with an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences and attended Smith College. However, she later transferred to Columbia University to earn a bachelor’s degree in American Government and Politics. Najlas who speaks four languages was a 2015 Dean’s List and Honors program student, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and active in the Student World Assembly and the Criminal Justice Club. She also

participated in the Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria. Polish-born Kate Maziarz completed her degree requirements at Kingsborough earlier, but stayed on at KCC to work on her research. Currently enrolled at Mount Holyoke College, Kate plans to earn a Ph.D. in polymer chemistry. Kate’s interest in chemistry was ironically sparked by a near fatal accident as a child, when her mother mixed bleach and other liquids to create a cleaning fluid, and Kate thinking the colorful mixture was a juice, drank some of the mixture and was hospitalized. When she recovered in the hospital her curiosity about the chemical mixture aroused her interest in chemistry. The scholar has presented her work, solo, at a conference in Belgium - the only undergraduate student to do so. It was a proud moment for Kate, as the judges, unaware that she was a community college student with less than two years of college experience, inquired about her research as though she was a senior college student. Kate was an Honors student and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors society.

Kingsborough Student Michelle Yedin Participates in White House’s First “College Reporter Day” Michelle Yedin ’16 former editor-inchief of Kingsborough’s Scepter (student newspaper), had the experience of a lifetime, as one of 50 students selected nationwide to participate in the White House’s first “College Reporter Day” in 2016. Michelle, a journalism degree graduate, was the only CUNY student, and one of only three community college students selected to attend. The student reporters began their day in the James Brady Press Briefing Room, before visiting the Eisenhower Executive Offices to meet with several Obama administration staffers, including former Education Secretary John King, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative Executive Director Eric Waldo, and members of the press corps. Bo and Sunny, the Obamas’ Portuguese water dogs, greeted the students during a break. The students met with White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest who answered their many questions. Kingsborough Earns Achieving the Dream Leader College Distinction Kingsborough Community College was the only City University of New York school, as well as the only New York state community college in 2015 to earn Leader College distinction—a national designation awarded to community colleges that commit to improving student success and closing student achievement gaps. In receiving this honor, KCC showed how data could inform policy and practice to help community college students achieve their goals, resulting in improved skills, better employability, and economic growth for families and communities.

Michelle Yedin

OB/GYN, the recipient of the 2015 KCC Retirees Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship, has decided to become a political reporter, and eventually a news anchor, following her White House experience. Now enrolled at George Washington University, Ms. Yedin said, “Had I not gone to KCC, I don’t know what opportunities would have come my way.” Adding, “I went to the White House; I interviewed Senator Charles Schumer; I went to a Bernie Sanders rally, and I took part in the National Model United Nations.”

Kingsborough successfully expanded its Learning Communities and developmental Math workshops, and implemented STEM initiatives and equity programs. Achieving the Dream’s philosophy of thoughtful assessment and evidence-based decision-making is consistent with KCC’s practices and priorities, and has been instrumental in the successful implementation of these programs. Leader Colleges work to increase student completion and close achievement gaps. By working collaboratively with Achieving the Dream coaches, colleges can systemically change the way they operate. They can also implement key student supports that align with their overall policies and institutional systems, such as college readiness programs, mandatory new student orientation, student-success courses, developmental course redesign, curriculum redesign, and intensive, individualized advising.

Leader College designation is granted for three-year cycles after which institutions must undergo a recertification process to maintain.

Kingsborough Receives Reaccreditation Status from Middle States Commission on Higher Education Led by Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Richard Fox, the college completed a decennial SelfStudy, meeting all requirements for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Along with Self-Study Co-Chairs, Prof. Janine Graziano and Prof. Loretta Taras, VP Fox led a Steering Committee, including faculty and college administrators, that produced a candid study examining the college’s strengths as well as its opportunities for improvement. This comprehensive analysis of the college’s programs and practices was based on fourteen standards determined by MSCHE. The Self-Study was then reviewed by a team of external peer educators. KCC hosted a three-day visit by the peer evaluation team in April, 2016. Chief of Staff Dr. Tasheka Sutton-Young coordinated the complex logistics necessary to successfully host the evaluation team visit. The visiting team’s report reflected KCC’s commitment to student learning and success as well as to effective practices regarding governance, faculty and administration, assessment, and resource allocation. The Middle States Commission reaffirmed Kingsborough’s accreditation in June 2016.

KINGSBOROUGH SUPPORTERS The Kingsborough community extends beyond our campus borders. We have a responsibility to the borough of Brooklyn, and we are proud of the role we are playing in its revitalization. A gift to the Kingsborough Community College Foundation, Inc. – a charitable 501(c)(3) organization that exists solely to benefit Kingsborough – will fund scholarships and support faculty and curriculum development. But it supports more than an institution: it supports a community. We are pleased to recognize the following donors, whose gifts have helped many Kingsborough students realize their dreams.

Membership in the giving society allows one to play an important role in the financial well-being of Kingsborough and to make a powerful statement about his/her commitment to our mission of providing an affordable, high-quality, transformational education to its students.

“The 1963 Society” recognizes donors who make an annual leadership-level gift at one of the giving society levels

Society members enjoy a number of benefits, including invitations to members-only events and special college communications. For all levels, membership is determined by gifts in a fiscal year, which spans July 1 to June 30. Membership benefits increase according to the size of one’s gift. Thank you to the following members of “The 1963 Society” for so generously supporting our students during the period covered in this report:
