fuchsia doesn’t check her calendar to see when it’s time to bloom. When conditions are right, the flowers just pop out in bursts of magenta and white, sending a colorful signal to birds and bees that her sweetsweet nectar is ready to sip. But conditions change, along with the earth’s climate. If the timing’s not right, and the fuchsia misses her environmental cues, pollinators will find something else to eat, if they can. And the fuchsia’s chance to reproduce flies away to the beat of hummingbird wings. The study of life-cycle events like these is called phenology, and is the focus of Juliet Oshiro’s work as a grad student at UC Santa Cruz’s department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Each month, Oshiro enlists “citizen scientists” to walk the garden paths of UCSC’s Arboretum and check in on the fuchsia and other plants for ongoing studies on climate change. The next workshop is June 4. Arboretum admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children (6 to 17 years old). If you’re under 6, or are a UCSC student or arboretum member, the whole day’s a freebie. “A lot of plants and animals will time their life-cycle events with environmental cues,” said Oshiro, whose field work includes studies in out-of-the-way natural settings in Santa Cruz County. “It’s like nature’s calendar – like when in the year

do buffalo migrate, or bird’s eggs hatch, or plants bloom.” At her workshops, attendees will visit the arboretum’s California native gardens and look for plants committing acts of nature, such growing buds or losing leaves. They’ll also learn to properly record this data and upload their findings to the USA National Phenology Network database, where real scientists in white lab coats and thick glasses can use it to further their research on climate change. “What I want people to get out of these workshops is to be able to collect data on their own,” Oshiro said. “I hope to show people that it’s really easy to collect this data. If you have a cherry tree in your backyard, you can observe your cherry tree and contribute to the database.” White lab coats are optional, but a hat,

sunglasses and walking shoes will come in handy. Citizen scientists are provided with data sheets and instructions. The phenology network makes its data available to scientists, resource managers and members of the public who are making decisions about adapting to changing climates and environments. The network’s database currently tracks phenology data on a thousand species. If you’d like to keep track on your own, you’ll get to pick and choose which of those species to monitor. Oshiro, who admits she has a black thumb when it comes to gardening, nevertheless loves plants. She even keeps a container garden in her tiny secondstory apartment. Her dissertation field work takes her to “ecologically important” sites in Scotts Valley, Watsonville, Boulder Creek and UCSC Arboretum

Santa Cruz, where she observes how the characteristics of plants contribute to their response to climate change. The basis of her research is adding to data collected by local naturalist Randall Morgan, who conducted phenology surveys during the 1990s in the same areas and placed his findings in the The Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History on campus. Data Oshiro downloads from local weather stations shows that night time temperatures in the county have risen about 1 degree Celsius since the 1980s. “If you combine all species, the plant-blooming times in general are earlier now than they were in the 1990s. They’re shifting earlier, and I suspect that’s because the climate is getting warmer – and so the spring is coming earlier,” she said. “Some plants respond to climate change by delaying the life cycle, too, so it really depends on the species. I’m trying to figure out why that might be.” The June 4 walk takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Meet at picnic tables in the South African Garden, UC Santa Cruz Arboretum, 1156 High St., Santa Cruz. Dowsing & Metaphysics Conference

D

owsing is more than simply

searching and finding water. Dowsing is a technique that allows one to access a consciousness greater than the conscious mind. The universal consciousness holds all sorts of knowledge that dowsing enables us to make use of. When one learns how to dowse, that skill can open a person to knowledge beyond the five senses, hence dowsing can be very much a part of the world of metaphysics. With a little bit of instruction and practice everyone can learn to be a good dowser. The dowsing techniques are a gateway to knowledge, energy and subjects that may not be obvious to the conscious mind. When one learns to find water and really does get the kinesthetic feel for the water accurately, then that skill can be applied to areas like: locating oil, finding lost objects, gardening, farming, energy healing and clearing, decision making, checking quality of everyday food and supplements and answers to all kinds of personal questions. Many dowsers learn how to map or chart dowse as a part of the learned skill. They learn how to locate water on a map and then divert that water energetically on the map to the best location for use. It validates as real on the property. If a dowser can do that, then just imagine what else dowsing can be used for. Come to the West Coast Conference and find out! The Conference this year will include presentations on sacred sites (and the energies that make them sacred), angels, spirit guides, devas, fairies and nature spirits. There are two presenters on animal communication. There are specialists on herbs and herbal oils and essences. Aura photographs and readings, radionics and chakra balancing will be available. Several will speak on pendulum divining and manifesting your heart’s desire. Earth energy scholars will speak on sacred geometry, labyrinths, sacred land space, landscape design and crystals. There are also presentations on Feng Shui, numerology, ghosts busting, finding lost objects, pets or people, healing plants and trees, earth acupuncture and earth energies. Orb photography, even energetic gardening are topics that are on tap from a very talented field of presenters who love what they do and who travel from as far away as Georgia, Great Britain and Hawaii to share their knowledge. Many speakers are energy workers as well, who do energetic repairs to body and mind; some will

There are special presentations or entertainment each night, followed by a hosted hospitality with beverages and light snacks. Susan Collins will speak on “Awakening the Dowsing Spirit.” Susan is a former President of the Canadian Society of Dowsers, an internationally recognized speaker on dowsing and is a fulltime management consultant and professional dowser who has spoken about dowsing to audiences from Japan to Scotland and Saudi Arabia on the many forms that dowsing takes (we do a lot more than just find water)! The setting for the convention is absolutely breathtaking: a beautiful campus adjacent to a redwood forest, with a full view of the Pacific Ocean from nearly every point. Activity outside of the seminars focuses on a beautiful, tree-lined hillside plaza where speakers and vendors spend time one-on-one with attendees, set up their booths after sessions, and where one-of-a kind labyrinths are drawn for the simple pleasure of walking them. Did you know UCSC has many

spectacular. Founded in 1980, we are celebrating our 36th year. All but the first two conferences (which were held in San Diego) have been held at UC Santa Cruz. The location is filled with majestic redwoods and old oaks. Two streams of water crossing beneath the site provide water dowsing practice for beginners and others, and add a happy, healing energy to the conference. Meals are held in the dining hall. On-site living is in one and twobedroom dormitory apartments. Room and board is available on campus and can be reserved at the same time as you register. And, yes, learn how to dowse for water (and oil, and natural gas, and gold, and…). If you’ve never dowsed before and want to learn, the conference offers a full-day workshop where you will learn to use pendulums, “L” rods and “Y” rods. You will learn to find water and buried objects with all of the tools and then go on a field trip where there is water to be found. You can learn chart dowsing, using a pendulum to get answers to questions, and how to ask questions the “right way.” You may arrive not knowing anyone at all, and leave certain that you’ve “found your peeps.” The convention has been dubbed a “summer camp for metaphysical types” and rightly so. CHIROPRACTIC CORNER

The Cranio-Sacral Revealer?

by Sylvia Skefich, D.C.

“W

hy…?,” people ask, when they have an ache or a pain. If it hurts, people want to know the cause so they can avoid making it worse. Interestingly, the muscles have recorded the injuries. Whether a one-time blunt-force accident, or a chronic overuse syndrome… these and other stress patterns are recorded in the tissues and can be revealed with Cranio-Sacral Technique. Then, any number of techniques, including Cranio-Sacral can be used to restore the tissues and joints to a better way. Let’s say a woman comes in to the office with wrist pain. I position her in a comfortable seated position, and I hold her whole arm, down to the wrist in the most neutral position possible. I let the tone of her muscles guide me as I hold her upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand joints in the positions of least tension. As I hold her arm and wrist, I find that the most neutral positioning to my feel has the woman’s wrist cocked backwards. As I assist that positioning, the arm slowly moves like a gentle dance move. I find that her elbow now needs to straightened out to “follow” the least stressful position to the elbow with the wrist being cocked back. To me, it feels like the woman is making the motions. To the woman, it feels like I am doing the positioning. Eventually, the woman is sitting with her arm in an outstretched position, elbow slightly bent, and wrist coked back rather severely. I report: “Your arm has gone into a position like you are bracing for a fall.” The woman might acknowledge a recent or an old but serious fall on the arm. In the meanwhile, I am holding her arm in this position and using

micro-motions to open up the space in the hand bones and forearm, using the bones as my levers. By the end, we have released a trauma that was registered in the tissues, and maybe even in the emotional body as well, and the woman feels better. Let’s say, the next day I have a man with a similar wrist complaint, and I ask him to lie on his back. I hold his hand, wrist, and forearm on a pillow across my lap. Let’s say, a neutral feel in positioning requires that I assist the forearm to turn inwards, pronating. As I allow that motion, I can feel the elbow lock up. I use the long bones of the forearm as a lever to open up some space, gently. I may even use trigger point therapy on the muscles near the elbow to speed up the process. The pronation of the wrist continues, and the fact that the forearm keeps pronating is upsetting the wrist alignment. I ask the man if he keyboards a lot (suspecting a common activity of excess pronation). He says, “No,” but explains how the wrist hurts more when he winds rope at his job (demonstrating pronation repetitions). Now we know why his wrist problem is there, and after the cranio-sacral alignment session, I can give him exercises to balance the excess of his work activity, and supports specific to his injury. Cranio-Sacral is the technique of sleuthing out physical patterns of restriction and misalignment in the soft tissues and joints and can be used alone, or with other techniques to regain balance and strength again.

by Christopher Love inter feels like it is holding on longer than usual this year. I am wondering, as I put on an extra layer of clothes this morning, how the weather is connected to the collective experience of humans, if at all. In my own personal life, 2015 contained a vast array of powerful experiences, and having a mellow start to 2016, meaning cooler weather and lots of rain, has been beneficial to my integration process. I utilize the Winter months to prepare for the coming year and the warmth, which usually signifies a plethora of activities. I am especially grateful for the water, in the form of rain, that has blessed our region and for the days I have spent listening to it fall on my bamboo roof. In this article series, I have explained that there are four distinct paths, called margas, which make up the yogic system for healthful living, loving and awakening. The Four Margas are: Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Karma Yoga. If you do not know what these are, please revisit Part I of this series. We also outlined, in Part II, that there are eight disciplines, called digvalaya, that form the foundation of the yogic path: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Bhakti Yoga is concerned with the development of loving kindness and compassion through devotion and surrender. Although it is one of the Four Margas, it is also part of the Eight Digvalaya, specifically showing up in the second discipline called Niyama. Niyama is the discipline that has to do with developing a deep sense of peace and contentment. To accomplish this, the practitioner utilizes practices having to do with self-discipline, self-study and devotion. What is important to note is that, Yoga is an integrated system. If followed as a whole path, the practitioner will find elements of the Four

W

Margas intertwined throughout all of it’s Disciplines. Still yet, there is sometimes confusion or debate as to which path of Yoga is best to follow. For example, there are those who argue that Jana Yoga is more important because it assists the practitioner in cultivating the highest intellectual understanding. However, critics of Jana Yoga will say that practitioners of this Yoga often increase their personal ego along with their spiritual knowledge, and that this can be a major stumbling block to their development. I believe that the Four Margas are not meant to be stand alone paths, rather, each is a pillar that makes the foundation to a structure, that is designed to create wholeness in the experience of the practitioner. Human bei n g s ex hibit a vast array of temperaments. For this reason, I believe that there is not a “cookie cutter tradition, religion or system that fits all the people all the time. I do believe that taking on a holistic approach to understanding ones existence is crucial to finding, purpose, peace, contentment and the experience of unconditional love. Taking into consideration all the different temperaments and individual personalities in our human world, I feel it is important for each individual to find the path and practices that fit well and support the continuation of practice throughout one’s lifetime. In the pursuit of happiness, we must take a deep look at who we are, where we are coming from and how we behave on the world stage. What we experience in life is often a reflection of our inner landscape. It is of benefit to know ourselves and have practices that support us to remain conscious and peaceful. Please join me for the continuation of this discourse on Yoga next month. Christopher Love is a writer, educator and meditation instructor who welcomes correspondence: Love@DevotionalLiving.org

passage of this bill forever. Don’t allow history to judge you as the man who opened Dr. Pan(Dora’s) box when the first cases of vaccine related injuries or deaths materialize on a grand scale. Letter to Gov. Brown Continued from Page 15 it with a strong message. Medical science is not perfect; never has been and never will. As long as risk exists, freedom of choice must also, otherwise citizens are reduced to being mere property of the state. The campaign to force mandated vaccinations has been funded by financially interested parties, but the decision to let this become law of the land beyond California may very well rest with you, Governor Brown. While I would not question the sincerity of Dr. Pan, one of the bill’s architects, I would suggest that the mere introduction of this bill by a physician on behalf of medicine, and his specialty, pediatrics, in particular is a clear conflict of interest. In times past, the Fourth estate would have recognized such a conflict and ferretted it out, as some have on the Internet, including financial ties to pharmaceutical firms that have championed Dr. Pan’s political career. The facts are what they are. Accusations of cronyism will haunt

What it takes!

I

by Prof. Chris Smith t is within these times of incessant transformation that it is imperative to find community among our brethren. That the virtues for which I am about to expand upon become invaluable. For what does it take to truly reach a goal? To stand tall on the mountain and look over the countless accomplishments, both large and small, which have brought you to this peak. There was a time when I was faced with a most formidable challenge. I knew what had to be done. I could see clearly the vision ahead of me. Yet I needed a guiding set of principles,a mantra. When diluted to its core essence, what were the absolutes needed to reach the tallest pinnacle? Integrity came first. Without peace in my heart and soul, the mission would become clouded. Perseverance, that all too rare commodity, would be a must, for it was a very tall mountain

indeed. Of course, as a life long martial artist, I knew I would need discipline. The

iron-clad, steadfast , don’t take your eye off the ball kind of discipline. From these three distinct attributes of integrity , perseverance and discipline, the International Jiu Sool Do federation was manifested. As a parent rears his children with the morals and guiding principles that he/she feels are pertinent to a proper upbringing, I too guided our federation. I’m not sure why it delights me so to see the fruition of these principles. For surely an acorn will grow to be an oak tree. Many students have come and gone, just as there are many acorns on the forest floor. The rare few take root, for the environment in which they fell was conducive to their full promise. We respectfully refer to them as Black Belts. Prof. Chris Smith is the only Black Belt in Santa Cruz county to be awarded his Black Belt directly from a member of the world famous Gracie family. Fitness & Sports

Five Ways Athletes can Benefit from Massage Therapy by Beau Jansen, CORE ProElite Trainer, Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab he sound of clinking 45 pound plates, the faint ring that vibrates from a barbell as it clatters to the ground, and the shrill screech of a WOD clock that tells you to pick it back up all can make the silence that fills a massage therapy room seem like nothing but just a quiet and pleasant break from the important part of getting fit. However, massage therapy can accelerate the recovery process. The accrued stress that is put on the body during heavy weight training sessions, endurance training, and the repetition of movement in competitive sporting events can be diminished, balanced out and healed by healing powers of bodywork, when combined with proper rest and nutrition.

T

Here are five ways athletes can benefit from massage therapy: 1. Speed Muscular Recovery

Massage reduces post-workout tissue inflammation. This is the body’s natural response to the accumulated tissue damage that comes as a result of intense training sessions. Inflammation reduces the rate of recovery and puts the body at risk of injury from overtraining. Massage naturally increases the cell’s production of mitochondria which produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which in turn increases recovery time and aids in muscular function and energy levels.

2. Increase Circulation The manual manipulation of the body that occurs during a massage actually increases circulation. The improved blood flow occurs as a result of dilated blood vessels that allow a

greater volume of blood to pass through them. The increased cardiovascular efficiency aids in the transport of oxygen to the cells and the removal of waste and various toxins from the cell. This basically means, healthier cells, healthier body, healthier you!

3. Promote Relaxation

The de-stressing factor that accompanies the experience of a massage can improve focus and concentration later in the day. The parasympathetic relaxation response also helps in combating catabolism, the

body’s natural metabolic stress-response, which over greater durations of time inhibits protein synthesis and healthy hormonal function. Being in a constant catabolic state also means you are not in a state of anabolism, the metabolic condition that pro-

motes recovery and muscle growth, which allows you to get back training faster!

4. Reduce Pain

A major cause of pain in the human body comes as a result of inflammation which we already know massage reduces. Another way that massage helps reduce pain in the body comes as a product of the cardiovascular response it elicits, that not only helps to detoxify the cells but also releases endorphins. Endorphins are Endogenous Morphine which are produced by the central nervous system and the pituitary gland and are the key component in “runner’s high. Endorphins decrease stress, which can keep the body in an anabolic state as-well as acting as powerful organic pain relievers.

5. Increase Flexibility

Adequate range of motion is required to maximize strength, speed and efficiency. Each sport requires a healthy range of motion in each muscle and joint, not only to be efficient and effective but also just to prevent injury. A massage session can lengthen the muscle and increase total body flexibility in just one visit. This can prevent future injury as well as reducing the pain of former injuries, allowing the athlete to get back on the field, back in the gym, or back on the trail faster and with more confidence.

Light and Life — Brian’s

B

by Dr. Maureen Rozenn rian is a wonderful, polite, markedly intelligent 6 yearold boy. Brian struggled with pronouncing words that contained the letter “L.” For example, “light” became “night” and “life” sounded like “knife.” Brian was set to go to a speech therapist, but his dad thought perhaps acupuncture and Oriental medicine could help. He felt there may be a physical reason why Brian‘s tongue couldn‘t quite make “L” sounds. While speech therapy was helpful, perhaps Brian could get better results with an East-West approach. Just like an adult, I took Brian‘s full medical history and performed an exam during his first visit. I often do not use acupuncture with kids, relying on acupressure and heat therapy instead. But, Brian was intrigued. On his first visit, he opted to try a few pediatric needles. When I do acupuncture with kids, I use a quick in-out style so that if there is any discomfort, the needle is gone by the time it registers. We called the acupuncture points “mosquito bites.” Brian was very brave and received 5 mosquito bites on his first visit. I spoke with Brian‘s dad later that night. He said that Brian was so excited he was running in place! After our first visit, while walking to

Story

the car, Brian started saying, “life, life, life, life.” Brian was delighted to say, “la, la, la” and “light” over the phone to me. It was one of the most gratifying moments of my career. Brian‘s dad now gently presses prescribed acupressure points every night, which are geared towards enhancing tongue flexibility and jaw alignment. The continuation of Brian‘s treatment at home has been an important component of Brian‘s success. Brian‘s vocabulary now regularly includes words like “light” and “life,” in addition to words that used to be tricky like “rock” and “right.” After seeing Brian a handful of times, I released him from care pending a reevaluation from his speech therapist. Brian‘s care included Acupuncture, Essential Oil Therapy, Acupressure and Heat Therapy. For more information on these techniques, visit our website! Dr. Maureen Rozenn, LAC, DAOM, FABORM is a general practitioner of acupuncture and Oriental medicine who directs a clinic in downtown Santa Cruz, California. Dr. Rozenn specializes in Women’s Health, Pain Management and Fertility Enhancement for men and women. For more information, visit www.AcupunctureSantaCruz.net.

The certification by The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) recognizes Notre Dame’s successful creation of a Certified Wildlife Habitat through its on-campus Garden Wildlife Program, and celebrates the efforts of Notre Dame’s students to create a garden space that improves habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife by natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young. “We are so excited to have another passionate wildlife gardener join us and create a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Over the last 40 years, nearly 200,000 garden-

herbal hit list. Maybe there really is a cherry on top.

Gout

The first early gout study took sixty-two years to be replicated. A modern study of 633 gout sufferers found that eating cherries reduced the risk of having a gout attack by 35% and that supplementing a cherry extract reduced the risk by an even more impressive 45% [2]. After waiting over half a century, the next study took only one year to follow. This study gave gout sufferers a cherry juice concentrate (1tbsp=4560 cherries) while they continued to take their medication. In the first part of the study, more than 50% of the cherry group were attack free at 60 days and could cut back on their meds. In the second, attacks were reduced by 50% in half the people taking cherry juice for four months or longer [3].

Soon it would be discovered that cherries could do more than prevent attacks of gout. In truly surprising research, cherries, it turned out, treated insomnia. The first evidence came from a double-blind study of fifteen healthy, elderly people with insomnia. Their average age was 71.6 years. For two weeks, they drank either two 8 ounce servings of Montmorency tart cherry juice and apple juice or a similar looking placebo drink. Though at the end of the study, the people still had insomnia, those who drank the cherry juice had moderately improved sleep. They experienced significant improve-

ment on the Insomnia Severity Index, on how long it took them to fall asleep, on how often they woke up and on total sleeping time [4]. A second study found out how tart cherries treated insomnia. This double-blind study gave twenty healthy men and women 30mL of tart Montmorency cherry juice concentrate in 200mL of water twice a day for seven days. The dose was equivalent to approximately 90-100 tart cherries. Compared to a placebo fruit drink, the tart cherry juice significantly increased melatonin by about 16%. Cherries, it turned out, were improving sleep because they were a natural source of the sleep hormone melatonin. Compared to a placebo, the cherry group significantly increased the time spent in bed, had a significant 34 minutes m o r e sleep per night and a significant 5-6% increase in the time in bed spent sleeping. The people on the cherry juice also spent significantly less time napping [5]. An earlier study had also found that Jerte Valley cherries increased melatonin and improved sleep [6]. Later, a fourth study would also find that, compared to placebo, a cherry product improved sleep efficiency, time taken to fall asleep, number of awakenings and total sleep time and that it increased melatonin [7]. Surprisingly, then, in a novel

use of cherries, there is evidence that they improve sleep because they are a natural source of melatonin.

Exercise

In the same year the studies began to appear on insomnia, studies began to appear that demonstrated benefits for cherries for exercise. According to double-blind research on 54 healthy runners, when 355 mL of tart cherry juice was taken twice a day for seven days prior to a long distance run and again on the day of the race, the runners had significantly smaller increases in muscle pain than runners given a placebo cherry drink [8]. Subsequent studies would show that cherries improved the free radical damage and inflammation that resulted from exercise. In the first, twenty recreational marathon runners drank either cherry juice or a placebo for five days prior to a race and continued drinking it until two days after the race. Strength recovery was significantly faster in the cherry group. Furthermore, inflammation was significantly reduced and total antioxidant status was significantly greater in the cherry group [9]. A subsequent double-blind study would give either 30 mL Montmorency cherry concentrate (equivalent to about 90- 110 whole cherries) or a placebo in 100mL water twice a day

for a week to sixteen healthy male cyclists. Blood samples were taken after the cyclists completed high intensity exercise. Markers of free radical damage and inflammation were again significantly better in the cherry group [10]. Although exercise is good for every aspect of health, prolonged exercise can suppress immunity. Because of this immune suppression, prolonged exercise is associated with increased respiratory infections. So, researchers tried giving twenty recreational marathon run-

ners either tart Montmorency cherry juice or a placebo, starting five days before they ran their marathon and continuing until two days after they were finished. The dose of cherry juice was 236mL of fresh-pressed Montmorency tart cherry combined with apple (equal to 50-60 cherries) twice a day; the placebo was the same amount of a sugar-free fruit flavoured drink that looked like cherry juice. As in the earlier studies, the cherry juice significantly reduced inflammation after the race. C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation, increased significantly less in the cherry juice group. Importantly in this study, both the number and the severity of upper respiratory tract symptoms (URTS) were significantly worse in the placebo group. Only the placebo group suffered more URTS after the race: while 50% of the runners who took the placebo had URTS at 24 and 48 hours after the race, not one of the runners who drank the cherry juice did [11].

High Blood Pressure

The most recent study on cherries has discovered yet another benefit. Cherries benefit blood pressure. The just published study was a double-blind study of fifteen men with early high blood pressure: that is, they had either systolic blood pressure of 130 mmHg or higher, diastolic blood pressure of 80 mmHg or higher, or both. They were given a single 60mL dose of concentrated Montmorency tart cherry juice, which is equivalent to about 180 cherries, diluted in water or a fruit flavoured placebo drink. Their blood pressure was measured five times over the next eight hours after this single administration of cherry juice. Systolic blood pressure was significantly lower for three hours after drinking the tart cherry drink compared to the placebo. The greatest reduction in systolic blood pressure was 7 mmHg two hours after drinking the cherry juice. The lower readings occurred when levels of tart cherry polyphenols (antioxidant flavonoids) were increased, suggesting that the blood pressure benefit may be due to the polyphenols [12]. With at least a dozen studies in the past half dozen years showing that tart cherry lowers uric acid and prevents painful gout attacks, raises melatonin and promotes sleep, re-

Feng Shui Tips for Your Front Door

D

Megan Montero id you k n o w that your home is a being and your front door is its mouth? In Feng Shui, we call the front door the mouth of chi. The mouth is where all the nourishment of life comes in to keep the building/body healthy. This nourishing chi, or life force energy, helps to keep our whole lives healthy, happy and prosperous. A front door that is welcoming and easy to locate is an invitation for opportunities, healthy chi and success.

Evaluate Your Front Door

Take a walk down your street and notice your first impressions of your home and front door. Is the front door easy to find? Is the path to it clear and easy to get to? Does your entrance uplift you and invite you in? If you experience a moment of confusion as to where the front door is, the Chi may have a hard time finding you along with the opportunities of life.

3 Feng Shui Tips for Your Front Door Welcome Opportunities and a Healthy Flow of Chi into your Home and Life. Clear the path to your front door and clear the area around it. Remove anything blocking the door from the inside (tables/shoes/coats). Obstacles in your path will

welcoming and attractive environment. Invite the Chi to your door and uplift the entrance by using movement, sound, color, and healthy plants.

Movement and Sound

The movement and sound created by a wind chime or a water fountain will attract the chi to your front door. Water represents the flow of money so make sure the water in your fountain is flowing towards your front door and not away from it. A wind chime is only helpful if you like the sound of it. Metal wind chimes are the most effective.

Color and Plants

Painting your front door

an attractive color is an effective way to make your door stand out. Red is an auspicious color and good for attracting chi, but only if you like it. Plants in colorful pots surrounding the door attract healthy energy but not if they are crowding the area around the door. A path lined with colorful flowers and colorful flags (movement) are good ways to attract the chi. Yo u d o not have to do all these things, just enough to bring a smile to your face. The priority is to use solutions that lift your chi and enhance the whole building. Work to create front door enhancements that will make you feel welcome and at home. “A ngels on the R oad”

It was a son, perhaps in his forties, and his elderly father. They listened to our sad story and agreed to take us to the airport. The son told us he doubted we would make it in time for the flight, but the father said, “Let’s give it a try,” and off we went. We told them how grateful we were and the son said, “I’ve learned that all of life is meant to be lived in gratitude. Gratitude is the key to a good life.” When asked if we could pay them, the father said that the best payment would be to “pay it forward” and help someone else. The town of Paia, which is normally very congested with traffic, was totally clear and we sailed right through what can take an extra half hour. The son knew of a short cut that was just completed. He miraculously got us to the airport one minute before the 40 minute deadline. The Hawaiians told us to run and we took off. The gate agents took our bags and again told us to hurry as fast as we could. We were the last people on the plane, sweating and out of breath, but we made it. Our children were thrilled and surprised! As I sat in my seat and closed my eyes, I distinctly heard my inner voice quietly say, “Trust Me, I

To get the most out of work and life, you may want to consider hiring a coach. These days, coaching is no longer only the prerogative of elite executives. Many businesses and countless professionals are discovering the dynamite potential of sitting down with a skilled professional. Coaching allows you to identify what you truly value, and helps to crystallize your next steps. Your coach is committed to your agenda, and gently holds you accountable to focus on your priorities. Acting as a confidential sounding board, your coach is your ally for moving forward effectively.

You can hire a coach on your own, or your company might spring for getting you a coach. Performance and results often skyrocket through coaching. Many firms these days recognize that coaching of key employees maximizes business results. When you do what matters, you feel fulfilled and on track with life. to freedom. They have adopted a no cage policy for animals in a time where humans are being caged at unprecedented rates around the world - ironically mostly in America - the land of the free. On the road to Indian independence many of Gandhi’s followers were met with armed forces bent on stopping their quest. When peace was persistent the armed forces were stopped in shame - some even fled scared. Martin Luther King and many others showed similar success. For a time John Lennon was considered an enemy of the United States. Peace proclaimers are considered dangerous and are commonly killed by bullets - but they are hardly silenced. This is why our project has nothing to do with acting from fear. Rather, we are preparing for a future that is sustainable. Building and living in humane communities in peace is the only sustainable path. We choose to live in La La land. Light easily illuminates and cuts through darkness, yet no amount of darkness can ever dim the light. Aaron Carvajal is the Founder of Future of the Free and Under the Dome. by Aaron Carvajal any folks ask if our self sustainable dome project is to prepare for coming doom and gloom. There is a growing fear of what many call a societal breakdown which necessitates armed protection. Online and all around social media there is evidence of a growing interest in owning and learning to use firearms. Many call this a necessary evil, and proclaim we should get armed, be realistic - and quit living in La La Land. We believe the term ‘necessary evil’ is a pervasive oxymoron that in due time will no longer be an acceptable excuse for perpetuating violence. In the spirit of sustainability we choose peace as our protection rather than arms. Here is why. Everyone remembers learning of the forming of the Union from the original 13 colonies. We memorized the names of generals and dates of the bloody clashes with the natives. Most believe that there was no way to live in peace on the same land. We rarely hear about the peace in Pennsylvania where the non violent Quakers had no incidents of murder or rape living amongst the natives. It was not until the Union formed and the military established itself in Pennsylvania that killings began. Some Quakers then died - but only three that

temala, El Salvador, and Honduras all had civil wars followed by decades of violence and social unrest. This subsequently led to generations of lost boys who now form the deadliest gangs in these countries where more than a dozen murders occur daily in the cities. On August 16-18, 2015 there were 125 murders in just 3 days in El Salvador. This has led to an estimated 66,000 kids fleeing for their life in the last 2 years. Neighboring Costa Rica also had a civil war, but then officially abolished its military in 1948. What followed was peace ever since and the emergence of a safe haven in Central America. This goodwill seems to have grown as Costa Rica recently decided to close public zoos in the spirit of honoring an animal’s right

his article is going to shine some critically explosive light on a bio-tech corporation that has had a destructively unavoidable impact on the entire planet. I have been doing community based activism work and have been living in Santa Cruz, California, of the most ecologically and organicminded cities in the United States, where sadly, Monsanto’s products are harming it’s world renowned natural beauty. This corporation started as a synthetic chemical lab that manufactured deadly bio-weapons such as Agent Orange, which was used so widely in Vietnam that it still causes birth defects to this day, 50 years after the war. This corporation fed lies to governments and farmers all over the world for decades, promising to be the solution to feed the world and bring hope to overwhelming population growth. This corporation infiltrated our food supply in the United States, in our grocery stores and school lunches, to the extent that every person in this country has inevitably ingested their transgenic and chemicallytreated products. This corporation has oppressed farmers in third world nations with their genetically modified seeds and pesticides, forcing these products into their economies to the point where they either used these poisonous methods or lost their family farms. This corporation continues to poison our air and our environment with it’s synthetic pesticides like Roundup, which has finally been recently labeled in California as a cancer causing agent in accordance with Proposition 65.

This corporation is Monsanto.

I decided to finally write a brief, comprehensive review of my knowledge, experience, and understanding of the critical situation that our planet is in today because of Monsanto. There are research papers, books, documentaries, government warnings, FDA documents available from the Freedom of Information Act, and many other means of references regarding Monsanto’s unethical history. These resources are widely available, easy to find, and wellknown by millions. The popularity numbers from social media like Facebook can prove one facet of the general public’s view on Monsanto. If you were to type in “Monsanto Company,” it’s main page has 128,304 “likes.” It’s highly unlikely that this is even the first page that comes up when you type “Monsanto” in the search bar. You’ll probably see

the more popular group sites, such as “March Against Monsanto” with 1,075,777 “likes,” or “Millions Against Monsanto,” with 888,781 “likes.” There is no doubt that once people see the proof (which, like I mentioned, is prevailing), no one wants their food supply or farms poisoned and to be unavoidably exposed to transgenetically mutated organisms that have no safety assurance of their long term affects on the environment and human bodies. Here is my imperative question for the public: what has Santa Cruz, with a reputation for being an eco-progressive city, done to promote awareness or ban Roundup or GMO’s? Richmond, CA has completely banned all use of Roundup and it’s main ingredient, glyphosate. According to the Organic Consumer’s Association, Santa Cruz joined Trinity, Marin and Mendocino counties in banning GMO crops back in 2006. My pressing question to the public and city officials is, what has the county done to implement this ban? If GMO’s are in fact banned here, than why is glyphosate still on our shelves so the public can spray it without restriction, regulation, or an understanding of the danger it poses to every living thing? The general public should be widely aware that GMO’s and Roundup are tools of Monsanto’s death peddling agenda that is decimating our environment and our health. Since Roundup has been around for decades, sold in many types of stores, and has never had a health warning label like it is supposed to, the general public has no idea how dangerous it is. It is considered to be a legacy chemical, which means it does not break down easily in the environment and can persist for very long, destroying the nutrients of and remaining in the soil. It’s not even useful for keeping weeds away since super weeds that become resistant to the chemical eventually grow in the area it is sprayed. Despite this fact, the county of Santa Cruz still allows it to be sprayed on the sides of our roads to attempt to kill acacia tree stumps. It’s also sprayed in our levees and rivers to clear the channels of vegetation. Yes, a cancer causing chemical that persists in the environment is literally being sprayed in the amount of gallons into our water and environment. You can view the most recent integrative pesticide management report here: http://tinyurl.com/zgak35r There are very viable alternatives to these dangerous pesticides. The county could create more jobs by

Page 30 ♥ Connection Magazine ♥ www.ConnectionMagz.com ♥ Facebook.com/ConnectionOnline ♥ June 2016

hiring people to manually remove the vegetation that will inevitably clog the channels whether Roundup is sprayed or not and remove the stumps with machinery. There is no easy way out of altering our natural environment for the conveniences of humanity. Overtime, the community will end up paying much more for these chemical methods of plant removal with increased cost for the pesticides to remove the super weeds they breed and most importantly with the deterioration of their heath as well as the health of our ecosystem.

So what is the general public to do when governments don’t take the GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) out of our food supply, when the farmers and even our neighbors don’t stop spraying Roundup, and when the obvious effects of climate change and environmental destruction are prevalent? Well, I am just a single mom, raising a 6 and 4 year old in a confusing world where food has to be constantly scrutinized and laws backed by Big Pharma (one of Monsanto’s proud partners) have been taking away the rights of parents to determine what medical interventions are truly appropriate for their children. With more devotion to my learning process, with every book, statistic, study and personal story I read and every documentary I encounter, I have to powerfully fight the overwhelming feelings of devastation and not be crushed by the atrocities that my children and their peers will inevitably have the responsibility of facing if my generation cannot. Besides being a single mom, I have been studying Traditional Chinese Medicine for 4 years and will be graduating soon with a Master’s degree. It has been the most rewarding and confidence-building process of my life and I am very honored to be able to offer holistic, natural prospects to life-long health for the many patients that I have seen. I am so lucky to have the skills and knowledge of holistic medicine to treat my own children and to be able to accommodate their natural growth process, nourish their creativity, and embrace their individual needs. With all this in mind, what could someone as busy, yet empowered as

I am, possibly do to contribute to the organic well-being of the planet, my children’s future, and the place we are living in now? I started addressing this nagging concern of mine by creating a “March Against Monsanto Santa Cruz” Facebook group. I also am organizing a March Against Monsanto event that will take place in downtown Santa Cruz on May 21st, 2016, as a part of a collective, worldwide movement that is happening in several countries. In addition to this group and event, I started an online petition to take Roundup off the shelves in local stores. Roundup has no regulations to where it is sprayed or even who buys it. Basically, anyone can purchase this cancer causing substance and spray it anywhere. This needs to be addressed. You can help by signing the petition here: http://tinyurl. com/zheljxk. Santa Cruz, California is a cultural mecca of the world, and when our culture makes conscious-driven moves like taking Roundup off our shelves and marching against oppressive food nazis, it will impact many other places. I may be a little of an idealist for having so much faith in the projects that I take on. I may get some scrutiny, but so far I have received nothing but wonderful support and encouragement from my community. One of my biggest motivations for these projects is to inspire more people, from those with more of a social influence to those who think their voices would never be heard, to create their own projects aimed at making their communities more conscious, healthy places.

All Rice is not Equal!

I

by Vani Hari, the Food Babe love rice! I also love combining cooked food with raw food to make a very nutritious meal. This Asian Citrus Rice Salad does just that and is a delicious dish to make for lunch on the go or for a summer bbq. All the flavors of oranges, ginger, tamari and vinegar go so well together — YUM! Brown basmati rice is perfect in this recipe because it hasn’t been stripped of its bran and germ (like white rice) where most of the nutrients are, and it still has a light and fluffy texture. Brown rice is one of the richest sources of manganese, a trace mineral that fights free radicals in the body. Along with the orange slices and green bell peppers, this salad is also high in vitamin C, an important antioxidant that helps prevent DNA damage.

Choose your rice carefully…

When choosing brands of rice, it is a good idea to contact the companies that you buy rice products from and ask them if they test for arsenic. Arsenic is a carcinogen that is prevalent in rice products, including some brands of brown rice. California grown rice has been shown to contain lower amounts of arsenic than rice grown in other parts of the country. I really like Lundberg Organic which is grown in CA and Alter Eco because they do regular testing and publish their results. If you don’t want to use

brown rice in this recipe, wild rice or quinoa would be equally delicious!

by Candace Stuart-Findlay ’d like to draw our attention to something that I have recently noticed, and ask for your assistance to shift it. Immediately after Donald Trump won his last state primary race, I felt a significant uptick in 3rd/4th dimensional fear frequency. I first objectively observed the experience to see if it was solely of my own transmission. I determined it was global, not personal. However, unless we are aware that the fear frequency level increase is global, and not personal, we can easily personalize the feeling experience and begin unconsciously looping and cocreating with it… therefore expanding fearfulness. Here is my two-part assistance request… First, let’s please be aware of what energy frequencies we are transmitting and

receiving, Joy/ L o v e or fear/ anger? Notice Candace where Stuart-Findlay our focus is, are we talking about being afraid, hopeless, angry? Or are we noticing all the joyful beauty around us, and speaking with gratitude? If the focus is primarily upon fear-based feelings and thoughts, let’s please immediately shift back to the Joy/Love frequency. This is simple to do using the Divine Heart Coherence™ Technique that I have shared in this column numerous times. Second, let’s in Unity place our focus and joyful feelings upon solutions, compassion, and joyful outcomes that are for the Highest and Greatest Good. Remember, a basic quantum physics rule is what-

ever we focus upon expands. So, by collectively focusing upon the Joy/Love/ Unity feeling we will cocreate space for peaceful, respectful solutions and outcomes to manifest. We are all One. When I embrace Joy/Love, it ripples through all Consciousness, the same way it does when you choose Joy/Love. And… thus WE create the Shift! How powerful we collectively are when we individually shift our focus from fear to Love…from anger to Joy! Together WE create the Shift! I invite you to share your experiences with our readers, please reach out to me through my web site. Candace Stuart-Findlay is an Author, Speaker, Now Thought Educator and Transformation Facilitator. THUMBNAIL MOVIE REVIEWS

By Karin Leonard & Daniel Robin ach month, we select our favorite or otherwise important films to be featured on this page. We rate them, subjectively, on a scale from 1 (worthless) to 5 (awesome) in terms of their entertainment and message. We leave the plot details and storytelling to the filmmakers and instead attempt to characterize, highlight strengths and hint at purpose. Reach us at movies@innerevolution.com. Enjoy!

A l i c e T h ro u g h t h e Looking Glass

With Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway Entertainment: 3.5 Message: 4 The majority of critics must be mad as hatters. This amazing and completely absurd sequel to the 2010Alice in Wonderland delivers quite an existential ride, again, for the first time. Turning over direction from Tim Burton to James Bobin (Da Ali G Show, and Muppets) was a good move, as was using the same screenwriter. Even more “phantasmagorical” than the last, it works if … you can free yourself from sensibility, at least for awhile. All the elements are there, but purists will consider the “true” story lost. But seriously, jumping through wall mirrors is no way for a young lady to escape her problems. Generously applying this new form of “madtech” to

Karin Leonard & Daniel Robin believing in yourself makes the tale quite relevant, about sticking to principles, lasting friendships and female emancipation (updating the 1865 original). The crazy genius of Johnny Depp just gets crazier. Carter’s Red Queen is delightfully weird and creepy. This visual feast and special effects orgy includes some questionable c o s t u m e d e s i g n s . Lots of fun, red hair! A fairly long ordeal, at least never boring, ironically centers on time itself, and almost makes it stand still for awhile. Despite the over-the-top CGI effects, there’s somehow still humor and heart (1 hr 53 min.)

Put “Music Connection” and your band’s name in the subject line. start to finish, fabulous performances by Clooney and Roberts and powerfully directed by Jody Foster, this drama takes on the big game of Wall Street, corruption, and the hot contemporary topic of tension between rich, poor and behind-the-scenes securities fraud in an up-closeand-personal, visceral fashion. Yes, there are plot holes and plausibility stretches, as well as shortcuts taken for the sake of brevity and on-screen tension, but the entertainment and pertinence for our times is undeniable. Which States Will Legalize Marijuana In 2016?

Posted by Johnny Green, July 29, 2014 olorado and Washington State legalized marijuana in 2012. If all goes well, Oregon, Alaska, and Washington D.C. will also legalize marijuana in 2014. Assuming that happens, which states will legalize marijuana during the 2016 Election? Many states are already ramping up efforts for 2016, and there’s a chance that some states might even legalize between now and 2016 via their legislatures. Below are the states that I feel have a great shot at 2016. Arizona California Connecticut Delaware Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Missouri Montana Nevada New Hampshire New Mexico New York Rhode Island Vermont The states listed above either have strong campaigns already working on the ground (and $), or are located in the North East part of the country where legalization via the legislature is most likely to happen in my opinion. I’m not trying to guarantee that all of the states listed above will succeed, but if asked which states I’d bet on, those would be them.

C

What the legalization models will look like in each state is up in the air, but I think those states have the best shot at legalizing marijuana by the end of 2016 in one form or another. Missouri might seem like a long shot to some people, but I work very closely with their campaign, and it’s one of the strongest campaigns I’ve ever seen. If that campaign team was in most other states, those states would make this list too. There are other states that have a good shot, like Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, and perhaps Minnesota, but I think those states are still farther away than the states listed above. Other states, especially Idaho, will have to wait until marijuana is legalized at the federal level before someone can smoke marijuana within state borders without fear of prosecution. I would predict that federal marijuana legalization will happen in 2017/2018, and no later than 2020. I used to predict a date that was much farther out, but the winds of change are much stronger these days, and picking up momentum. Johnny Green is a marijuana activist from Oregon.
