Mineral Springs, Apache Women Warrior & Mixed-Media to Craft New Archetypes by Majio ozen is a local legend at Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs in Northern New Mexico. She was an Apache woman who rode as a warrior with Geronimo, personally recognized as a significant threat to the U.S. Cavalry. Lozen, seer and shaman, broke all traditional boundaries of gender in the 1800s. This area has historically attracted extraordinary genius, both artists and writers, who in the spirit of Lozen expand archetypes that had been embodied for centuries. Ojo Caliente has unique sulfur-free mineral waters of lithium, iron, soda and arsenic, frequented first by Native Americans. Last year a small group of us ventured to this area for a seven-day retreat exploring the traditional archetypes of the four cardinal directions: visionary, warrior, teacher and healer. We explored these through mixed media materials: sand painting, mask and rattle making, small figures, painting and personal ritual in four directions from Ojo to the Red Cliffs of El Rito, to the Rio Grande Gorge near Taos, to Plaza Blanca where Georgia O’Keeffe painted and to the aspen forest near Tres Piedras. Each of us fashioned our personal archetypal center with variations key to the artist/shaman/magician. Although we spent four days in wild and diverse country, our home base was the luxurious spa of Ojo Caliente, where we used the hot springs each day for meditation,

integration and rejuvenation. The three worlds of shamanic cosmology is a way to understand this enchanting land where boundaries are more permeable inviting personal and collective transformation. In this cosmology construct there are three worlds, the under or lower world, of which we are most unaware but is in constant play in our lives—the unconscious. The upper world relates to the powers beyond us crossing time and space—our super consciousness or higher self. And the middle world, which is reality as we know it, what we live in from day to day—our waking consciousness. We are living in a time when longstanding archetypes need to be understood in a broader context. Typically we are so grounded in the middle world that little else exists, even though this is only onethird of the picture. In this land of the warrior woman, Lozen, worlds overlap— yielding vision, inspiration and healing through conscious and creative interaction. This place, even as it is curative, teeters on the edge of a vertical plunge into both the lower world and upper world. Locals recognize this unadvertised invitation into the depths of relationship to one’s self, to each other and to the collective. You can join us on our next adventure Sept. 26th through Oct. 2nd staying at Ojo with the intent to use creative expressions to understand more personally our governing archetypes, which impact our middle world. No experience in the visual arts is necessary, just a willingness to play. Writers are most welcome. Contact Majio for registration: anavami@cruzio. com, www.anavamicenter.com. Dr. Randy Baker

h

Interview with Dr. Randy Baker and Pattie Mills of Connection Magazine n Dr. Baker, please tell us some about your practice and background: I am a holistic Family Physician. I grew up in the Chicago area. I was fascinated by biology and earned a degree in Biology from Stanford University. I attended the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where I also completed my residency in Family Practice. After completing my medical training, I could have moved anywhere and chose the Santa Cruz area as the ideal place to settle. I started my practice, the Pacific Center for Integral Health in Soquel in 1988. I then completed a four-year postgraduate program at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy. I am a founding diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. n Do you have a par ticular focus in your practice? As a Family Doctor, I am qualified to treat everyone from newborns to the elderly, but I seem to attract people who are chronically ill and have been to many other doctors who either cannot find the cause of their problems or can find the problem but don’t have effective treatments to offer. I, thus, see many patients with problems like chronic fatigue, chronic pain, food and chemical sensitivities, gastrointestinal disorders and autoimmune conditions. But, I also see many people who are in good general health who are interested in maintaining optimal health and preventing disease. Of course, it is easier to prevent illness than wait until one is ill and then treat. n What modalities do you utilize? I utilize virtually every healing modality to various degrees, but there is a method to how I use them. When I work with people, I focus on three main areas. The first is identifying the underlying causes of illness. These causes are many and varied, but basically all

Dr. Randy Baker health problems are caused by the interplay of stress and our genetics. Stress includes both emotional stress and physiological stressors. Common physiological stressors include environmental toxins (heavy metals, molds, pesticides etc.), microbes and electromagnetic fields. While removing such stressors as much as possible is essential to health, it is also necessary to provide the body with optimal nutrition via diet and supplements. The tricky part is that one person may need a lot more of a given nutrient than another person, so it is important to determine individual needs. Also, it is important to give nutrients that each individual can digest, absorb and transport to the parts of our bodies that need them. Even if one removes stressors and provides optimal nutrition, people often will not heal from chronic problems unless the energetic component of health is addressed. Our bodies are not just physical and chemical mechanisms; there is a flow of energy that moves throughout our bodies. In chronic health problems that energy flow is disrupted. Modalities that balance body energetics, such as homeopathy, Chinese medicine or Ayurvedic medicine, are usually essential parts of a comprehensive healing process. Within the realm of Energy Medicine, I specialize in Classical Homeopathy, which is my favorite of all healing modalities. I have seen homeopathy cure many conditions considered incurable by conventional medicine.

When all of these aspects are addressed, even the most intractable and serious health problems can be healed (though it should also be noted that sometimes no matter what we do, some conditions will not be healed; I believe fate/karma is also a significant factor in our lives and health). n Have you found any conditions to be especially prevalent in the Santa Cruz area? Chronic Lyme disease with co-infections like Babesia and Bartonella is very common in our community. It can cause almost any set of symptoms, but the most common symptoms are fatigue, aches and pains that move around and a variety of neurological symptoms like poor memory and concentration as well as anxiety and depression. Most who have it do not know it, as most doctors do not know how to recognize and diagnose it. Another common issue is symptoms related to mold exposure, which can again manifest with a wide variety of symptoms and, again, many with mold toxicity are unaware they have been exposed. n How is a v isit with you different than a v isit with a conventional doctor? One of the main differences is the amount of time I spend. The average medical visit in the U.S. is 10-20 minutes. I generally spend an hour with patients and up to three hours with new patients. I try to get to know my patients in depth, educate them about health, and involve them in treatment decisions. I do offer conventional pharmaceutical treatment when appropriate—but prefer to use herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathy and mind-body techniques as well as diet and lifestyle changes. By trying to understand my patients issues in depth and addressing the underlying causes of their problems, I do my best to help them to heal rather than treat symptoms superficially. n You are known in some circles for being Jer-

Can you tell us about that? I was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and like many, was very concerned about Jerry’s health, so it was a dream come true when I met Jerry through mutual friends and became his family doctor in early 1990. I did my very best to help him and we had some great successes, particularly in the summer of 1992 when I helped him to stop using drugs and stop smoking. And, through diet and exercise, he lost 60 pounds. Unfortunately, when he resumed touring he fell back into some unhealthy habits. While I wish he was still with us, I’m happy that at the time he died—Jerry was making a sincere effort to become healthy again. ďż˝ The website http://www. HealthTap.com has named you Top Holistic Medical Practitioner in the Nation. Please Tell us about that. That is a great honor but probably sounds more impressive than it is. HealthTap is a website where doctors volunteer their time to answer medical questions submitted from people all over the world. Over 75,000 doctors participate. I enjoy helping the patients who submit questions. And, other doctors can see and comment upon the answers—which is a one of the reasons I participate there, so I can share knowledge with my fellow physicians. I have been voted ‘Top Holistic Medical Practitioner’ 7 of the 8 times that it has been awarded (the other time I came in second), but this competition is only amongst the doctors who participate on Health Tap and there are many superb Holistic Doctors who are not on HealthTap, as well, of course!. I am most honored that my fellow HealthTap physicians have voted me as the leading expert amongst them in the nation on: Lyme 'LVHDVH 6XSSOHPHQWV 9LWDPLQ 'HĂ€ciency, Vitamins D, C and B12, Vegetarian Diet and Herbal Supplements and as the second-leading expert in Homeopathy. Being a single parent to my 12- and 15-year-old daughters while maintaining my practice is still very challenging, but I now have much more time and energy to devote to caring for my patients. ďż˝ How can people learn more about you and your practice? I enjoy sharing information on health with as many people as possible. For several years I wrote a regular column for The Connection Magazine (and, I hope to resume this). Those old columns can be found at http://www.drrandy.org, a website that needs some updating but still has useful information (as well as on the archived Connection Magazines. I have a blog with more recent essays at www.drrandybaker.com. And, I have a Facebook page “Randy Baker MDâ€? where I share and comment on health related topics. If you scroll down on that one, you can see my ‘Herb of the Week, columns that I did for about a year, four years ago, which I think that many of you might enjoy. ďż˝ Thank you Dr. Randy Baker for your time and especially for being such an Outstanding Doctor, Naturopath, and so much more!

A Letter to the Elecromagnetically Sensitive by Sylvia Skefich, D.C.

T

his letter is to the electromagnetically sensitive, whether you know that you are or not. I have a sign hanging in my treatment space, asking people to power down (not just to silence) one’s phone at the office. But, it is common that people still do not power down. When I ask them if their phone is on, they are happy to oblige me in turning it off, however, they are quizzical about my having “felt” the cell phone being on. They assume the signs are about the “noise” being a bother. Because I can feel the sensations, I can help tether out the meaning of some sensations which may have been a mystery to you. Dear You, and You, and You, I’m just writing to let you know what some of the symptoms are from being electromagnetically sensitive. As someone who is very electromagnetically sensitive myself, I can describe the symptoms from experience. Also, being that I am a Chiropractor who works with people every day, I get to hear the experiences of others who recognize their electromagnetic sensitivity. Firstly, I want to explain what I’m even talking about—in the event that you have never heard of, thought about or considered this problem. (Yet, you still may be electromagnetically sensitive.) What it means to be electromagnetically sensitive is to have adverse sensations or symptoms from being in the proximity of electromagnetic radiation like a cell phone, a cell tower, a smart meter or even the WiFi in your home. Some people can even feel the fields of power lines and large banks of appliances (such as at larger grocery stores). Cell Phone Conversations: The sensation that I get when I’m on the cell phone starts with nothing, but as the exposure continues through conversation, there begins to be a “cotton” feeling on the side of the head where the cell phone is held. I also get anxious. If the conversation continues, a building pressure that verges on pain happens. Then, a sudden “topping off” of pain will occur, almost like the head filled up with as much as it could take, then actual sharp “pain” begins. Cell Phone Proximity Exp osure: When I am in the proximity of cell phones that are just powered up, but not actively in use, this is what I feel. … At first I won’t feel anything for 10 to 20 minutes. Then I will start to feel distracted and it will become hard to focus, but no other sensation will be present. As the exposure continues, then my heart may start to jump and skip beats (at least it feels that way). Or, I may not have the heart sensations at all, and instead I may get fleeting pains like sheets of paper that run through my head at infrequent intervals. Or, I may feel a gradual squeezing pain that can, at worst, progress to a vice like series of brief squeezes that are fairly severe. I would guess that the variety of sensations has to do with the variety of frequencies that the different devices put out. Another odd sensation from being in the proximity (as is a few feet) from a cell phone is a crackling noises in my head. It sounds like when sinuses pop and crackle, however, it is not in the location of the sinuses where I hear it.

CHIROPRACTIC CORNER Interestingly, I had a patient who had the exact symptoms that finally went away only when he moved away from using a Samsung brand phone and got another brand. I have noticed that all my adverse sensations are worse with Samsung. Smart Meters: Smart meters, to me, feel like a pressure or buzz, if I were just to walk up to one. I can’t always feel them just by waking up to them, but I do seem to be really affected by them at certain times. Because some of my experiences are a one-time experience in a given location, I am not sure if the pressure feeling is from higher powered “hub” smart meters, or if I just happened by when the meter was signaling strongest. Although PG&E will tell you that Smart Meters emit signal only a total of 45 seconds per day, the meters actually can be measured to emit signal blips every 2-3 minutes. Who knows what these frequent signals are doing. PG&E does not acknowledge the ongoing signals when I called them up. When I am in the proximity of a Smart Meter for a more prolonged time, my vision will have a shuddering effect. This sensation is notable in low light when looking at vertical things like a door jam. There is just a subtle visual shudder. Also, I can “hear” Smart Meters at times. I know that it is not truly an audial thing, but my brain translates some electromagnetic emission as sound. It sounds like a repeating crescendo of tapping. It is impossible to make sense of the rhythm. It is a non-sensical tapping that rolls in waves. It is my guess that this causation happens when the meters are being calibrated. I used to hear it when the meters were first installed outside my condo at the time. I still hear it infrequently at localized times that last for hours, though my closest Smart Meter is at the neighbor’s house, and I don’t have all the condo meters around. If I am “in the line” of transmission from my neighbor’s Smart Meter for a prolonged time, like reading on the couch, I may begin to feel a pressure and buzzy sensation in my head. Power Lines: High-powered power lines are the worst for me. These are the lines that run from metal towers in sequence, often through open space. If I were to go for a walk along a path near such power lines (like 50-70 yards away), my head would feel a sharp, vice-like pain. It is unbearable, and I won’t do that anymore. I can even feel high-powered power lines from long distances—if in an open space. Cars: The electromagnetic radiation that is in cars includes the blue tooth coming from the steering wheel controls, and from the consul, if the consul is Sirius satellite radio enabled (even if you never subscribed to the service). I have not taken a ride in an electric car, but would suspect the fields in such a car would be

strong. What to do? This is a new problem. The solutions are not clear cut. There are a number of “shielding” possibilities, ranging from bed canopies to screens that go on Smart Meters. There are also devices that disturb the frequencies of the device, diluting the waveforms so to speak. I have actually found these products, such as “orgonite,” to be very useful, even though I was very skeptical about them working at all. Other devices I have tried—ranging from expensive ones that claim to clear whole households and neighborhoods to necklace or beetles that you put on your phone—have not worked at all for me. This is not to condone or dismiss any particular product, because some products can be described similarly but may be different, and I have not tried them all. Of course, to “minimize” exposure would be paramount. The accumulated assault on the cells is what I understand to be the problem in such exposures. You can have your Smart Meter removed. You can power down your cell phone when not in use. You can turn off the Blue

Tooth function on your phone or put it in airplane mode. Use an earbud when on the phone. My next step is to try an airtube earbud with no wires. I have found that diet is important too. If I had been eating more sugar, then I will be feeling the reactions more so. This, I believe, is an issue with the inflammatory nature of sugar compounding the electromagnetic effects on the tissues. I have also found that homeopathic drops formulated for radiation problems are helpful in softening the adverse sensations by quite a bit. I hope this letter has brought clarity to some of your mystifying experiences, or helped to make sense of why some people have strong positions on trying not to be exposed. I might just suggest, in closing, to never stop looking for solutions to your ails. Once the causation is identified, then the solution is not too far away. Mandated Vaccines Will Be A Toxic Reality Of A Clinton Administration

by March Against Monsanto

I

f Hillary Clinton is elected president of the United States, there will be a national mandatory vaccine program. It is painfully evident with her selection for vice president and the mention of some nefarious players in the mandated vaccine battle that the former secretary likely intends to appoint to her cabinet. For starters, the potential future vice president Tim Kaine is a huge shill for the pharmaceutical industry. He has collected tens of thousands of dollars in “campaign contributions” and signed heinous laws in favor of his Big Pharma friends—like that one time he signed a law mandating the HPV vaccine for 6th gr ade girls in Virginia. I wonder if the Virginia HPV mandate had anything to do with Kaine’s buddies at Merck and the announcement to “invest $57‌million to expand the role its

Opinion

Elkton facility plays in producing Gardasil, Merck’s cervical cancer vaccine.” (Source) “It’s critical that Merck has sufficient production capacity to meet growing worldwide demand for its medicines and vaccines,” said Dr. Charles Vencill, plant manager. “We appreciate the ongoing support of the Kaine administration and local

officials to make this additional e x p a n s i o n possible.” In other alarming news this week, Hillary made mention of her desire to work specifically with Rep. Frederika Wilson. This is terribly concerning considering this is the very woman who introduced the national version of California’s SB277. Mandated vaccines for all! “The health and safety of children must be our top priority. Children who are not vaccinated put themselves and others in danger of acquiring and spreading preventable diseases. That is why I introduced the Vaccinate All Children Act because requiring vaccinations for students will save lives and protect future generations,” said Rep. Wilson. People need to realize that laws are being implemented in states all over this country that will deny our kids the right to attend a daycare or a public school unless they are current on the CDC’s vaccine schedule. The current schedule requires the administration of 69 doses of 16 vaccines by the time a child reaches 18 years. (Source) However, there are 271 new vaccines in the pipeline. The 271 vaccines in development “span a wide array of diseases, and employ exciting new scientific strategies and technologies. These potential vaccines—all in human clinical trials or under review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—include 137 for infectious diseases, 99 for cancer, 15 for allergies and 10 for neurological disorders.” (Source) The writings on the wall, folks. And if you think this impending reality doesn’t affect you or a loved one, think again. Here are a few possibilities to ponder in regards to a national vaccine mandate: If you are a government employee, you will not be able to work unless you are current on the CDC’s vaccine schedule. Collecting social security, unemployment or disability? Yeah, you won’t be able to cash those unless your immunizations are up to date. Our children will not be allowed to attend schools, daycares or play on sports teams unless they have all their boosters. Senior citizens will be denied medications unless they have received all required immunizations.

Vaccine Mandates In Light Of Corruption And Data Falsification Wouldn’t it be lovely if our elected officials were putting as much effort into the CDC whistleblower scandal as they are in obliterating our personal medical freedoms? The CDC has been caught redhanded lying, falsifying unfavorable research and omitting damaging evidence. Their lies have singlehandedly given rise to the surging autism epidemic in this country. Instead of pursuing a congressional investigation and subpoenaing Dr. William Thompson, the fools representing us in D.C. are too busy trampling our rights and passing legislation to force toxic syringes into the bodies of our children. Why isn’t Frederika Wilson more concerned about the recent admission that the CDC omitted evidence proving a link between the MMR vaccine and autism? There is a more than an 340% increased risk of autism development specifically for black, male babies under the age of 3 who received the MMR in accordance with the CDC’s timetable for the shot. You would think that Wilson, who is a black female, would be using her power to investigate serious allegations against the CDC instead of forcing legislation through that stands to harm more children. A Hillary presidency would be disastrous for health. If you are a one-issue voter, make this your issue. Mandated vaccines are slowly becoming a reality for this nation and our children will be the collateral damage in the wake of pharmaceutical warfare. Research the various toxic and extremely questionable vaccine ingredients. For example, Polysorbate 80 causes infertility with certainty and is an ingredient in most vaccines. Are you comfortable knowing your developing child is likely being robbed of their ability to have a family of their own all in the name of immunity from diseases that have been irrelevant for decades? (The infertility rate in this country is staggering, with 1 in 6 couples affected.) A vote for Hillary is a vote against children, their fertility and their futures. Our children deserve so much more than a Hitler-inspired eugenics regime which will be just one of the toxic legacies of a Clinton presidency. Teenage Posture and Spinal Health by Evelyn von Nottbeck, RMT Good posture generally means when the head is effortlessly balanced on the spine. The curves in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar areas are visually apparent, and together they form a slight S shape when viewed from the side. Poor posture typically refers to any deviation from this appearance, and in most cases the head will be found forward of the body and the shoulders may be hunched. Deviations to good posture often begin in the teenage years. Head-forward posture sends a strong and sustained signal to the back muscles that the person is falling forward. Therefore the back muscles undergo continuous strain as they effort to keep the person erect. Eventually a state of chronic fatigue develops, which in turn leads to pain, weakness, and a continuous cycle begins. Teenagers generally do not pay much attention to their posture. When heavy backpacks are added, the results of poor postural tendencies can be compounded. The average kid carries up to 20% of their body weight in a backpack (and some sources put this estimate higher). Since some schools no longer offer lockers, many kids keep their packs with them for most of the day. Some may carry them on one shoulder and hoist them up from the ground multiple times per day. In order to carry a heavy pack, a child must lean forward to counter-balance the weight on their backs, creating chronic strain in the back muscles. Also,

contributes significantly to life’s woes. The financial toll alone can be staggering in trying to remedy a challenging dental situation. Plus, sometimes techniques, technology, and a sufficient number of master dentists do not exist to remedy poor oral health. A shortage of skilled personnel to deliver dental care has already developed with policy makers in various state legislatures currently attempting to solve the issue by creating lower tiered dental professionals with lesser training. This will be hotly debated and contested throughout the country as the dental profession negotiates with society’s policy makers. Perhaps the most significant effect of poor dental health is the overall impact it has on whole body health. When I have the opportunity to examine an extremely ill person in my office, I virtually always see a history of poor dental health. Sometimes the patient’s mouth has been restored and sometimes not. In other words, the patients are ill, and some need more dental

shoulders are hunched up and forward to counter the weight leading to pain and headaches. Furthermore, the straps push down and create issues in the shoulder and neck muscles. Tension builds on the front of the body in order to counter the weight, and can lead to compression of the chest cavity. Some kids have developed painful issues involving the sternum and lungs. There are certain backpacks available to help with the distribution of weight. The best kinds to purchase have not only thick shoulder straps but also a hip belt. Also, to put the heavier weight close to the body is better. The backpacks on wheels are smart too. Unfortunately, a lot of students consider these backpacks “uncool” and do not want to use them. It’s good when teachers have textbooks which get sent home to stay for the school year. Additionally, online access to books is a helpful alternative as well. Talking with our teenagers about this subject is important. Studies have shown that teenagers who have back pain often grow in to adults with back pain. Bringing awareness to their posture, with the knowledge that posture is a dynamic state is a good place to start. For postural assessments, corrective bodywork, and specific exercise recommendations, contact Evelyn von Nottbeck at the office of Sylvia Skefich, Doctor of Chiropractic, (831) 475-1995. 920 41st Ave., Suite G, Santa Cruz, CA 95062. www.Vital-You.com “Like” Sylvia Skefich’s professional page for special offer notices. treatment to eliminate pain, infection, or decay, while others merely only need their teeth cleaned and gum tissue evaluated. Although those patients who technically do not need any restorative treatment because their mouth is decay free and all of their crowns and bridges and root canalled teeth appear healthy on radiographs, they still have significant medical issues—unless, however, as I have observed…they are leading a very healthy lifestyle which includes routine physical exercise, observations I will discuss in future articles. Dr. David Biles is accepting new patients interested in a comprehensive dental approach that detoxifies mouths and restores health. Dr. Biles brings a unique awareness to healing from a lifetime of personal experience, study, and work in many disciplines, including dentistry, medicine, physical education, human research in exercise physiology, and nutrition. For us to continue this exploration I feel we must examine the word god. I have heard statements throughout my life such as: “God is good, God is loveâ€? and “God is everything.â€? Let’s create a common understanding for the use of the word “godâ€? so we can explore the nine practices. What may be important is to ask what our beliefs about God are. Furthermore, it is wise to probe for the source of these beliefs and utilize critical thinking in their examination. Beliefs that we receive from others or from books may not live strongly within us and thus may

not survive the tests of time and circumstance. Beliefs that become knowing come as a result of direct experience that lasts a lifetime and carries us through the most challenging situations. Personal experience cannot be stolen, argued or debated as it lives within the self and is stored in the body in addition to the brain. to it. The incorporation of patience in training may come from a harsh life lesson, or it can be a gentle effect of understanding the path a seed takes to becoming a flower. It is the lost years that have taught me this new way of thinking and training, and the gratitude I have is immeasurable. I will never be a victim of urgency again. The quality of patience is not easily defined, and cannot be measured in trophies or belts. The most obvious signs are the acceptance of healing time by knowing the degree and extent of the conditions; creating a program where the outcome will bring the body back to an equal or better state; and having Joy in the process. Not easy. Since electing to forgo surgery until I had investigated and exhausted all other options, I came upon this treasure that I would have never found otherwise–something so simple, yet profound, that has brought me to a stronger, better, and more efficient performance, both on and off the mat. The road to mastery can be long and ridden with obstacles; yet, every step can be fulfilling when the martial artist carries the wisdom that: patience on the mat, and in life, is waiting for that instant when balance and timing are in harmony with intent and power comes from a source greater than will and force alone. Patience is climbing to the crest of the wave and letting it carry you; patience is flow, it is breath, it is compassion: it is the strength that comes from trusting nature’s laws, willing to wait for the opportunities that come with this secret power. gramme can develop to reach wider audiences locally and internationally. “I can confidently state that this was the most influential and consequential workshop of my teaching career to date. It is my hope to promulgate this sort of an emotional curriculum in a secondary educational model, and

this workshop provided the tools and orientation for doing so.” —Adrienne Miller, USA (high school teacher) The Seven Steps to Awakening Knowledge, Strength and Compassion is a practical teaching framework for awakening the hearts and minds of children, youth and adults, which has grown organically from over 20 years of working with children aged 3-10 years old. Starting with the question “What do I really want?” the philosophy and methodologies of the Seven Steps are designed to generate insights into the nature of the external world, our own internal world (psychology) and the interconnectedness of the two, in a way that will naturally support the process of developing positive qualities and of learning how to lead a happier and more meaningful life.

Tools and resources supplied within The Seven Steps include:

• Dialogue, simple questioning and logical reasoning • Reflection and mindfulness • Interactive games and art projects • The creation of a nurturing educational environment The Seven Steps is a recognized FDCW programme developed by Creating Compassionate Cultures (CCC), an organization which operates internationally from its base in California, USA. Be Natural Music’s After School Program

Described by the teacher herself, Sarah Newman:

I

n Be Natural Music’s “Music Exploration” after school program, we sing and play a variety of music from children’s songs to current pop songs and different cultural songs. So, naturally, we are building literacy and social studies skills in a fun musical way Children play color-coded hand bells and pianos that make learning to read music fun and easy. Words and music notations are displayed on large poster boards with corresponding color coding. The bells are sorted into chord triads, so that

each group can play when directed and the whole class participates in playing the chords while singing the melody. On piano days, the color-coded pianos reinforce the learning of music notation and melodies. The colorcoded pianos also reinforce students’ understanding of Chords, Harmony and Melody and how it applies to when we play the hand bells and sing. Alternatively, rhythm instruments and clap counts are used.

Videos of a variety of songs can support children’s understanding of the cultural relevance of the musical selections. The goal is for students to feel confident in their voice and in basic music knowledge, vocabulary and have fun! We start with easy songs (nursery rhymes) we all know and learn the chord progressions, melodies and lyrics to these and new songs. Learning music on piano is a great way to start and makes understanding chords and melodies and reading music easier because of the way it is visual. We also explore ways of using the voice creatively with positive

intention. We explore how sound affects water (cymatics) and how intention effects water as shown by Dr. Masaru Emoto. We sing water songs

from different cultures with loving intension and then give this water to our studio plants. One of my favorite

songs we sing is the garden song made popular by Pete Seeger. Besides teaching the After School Music Program, I also teach private music lessons on piano and saxophone as well as teaching songwriting at Be Natural Music’s summer camp for the last 4 years and I LOVE it! In the last two years, I have enjoyed creating this fun, new and easy color-coded way of teaching music reading and theory using ‘kids play’, hand bells and color-coded, numbered, and note-labeled pianos. I enjoyed teaching music using this system in the last two years at Tara Redwood, Aromas Elementary and Oasis Charter. And, I keep improving and expanding my curriculum. What a great experience teaching grades Kinder through 6th! This class will build students’ confidence in their voice and in themselves, in a fun musical group setting. It will prepare students to learn other instruments as they get older, too. Sarah Newman graduated from UCSC in 2009 with a BA in Community Studies, and a minor in Jazz . Her primary instrument is the saxophone, and she started playing at age 9 at Aromas Elementary. Sarah also has 10 years of experience studying Herbology and coaching people on nutrition and certification in Sound Healing at Globe institute. The SHIFT and the Ascension of Humanity . . . ! by Jeff Street Guest writer for Wake Up World ook around. The great shift in the consciousness of humanity has hit critical mass and passed the point of no return. It’s been building slowly but surely, and now it’s about to kick into high gear. The next decade or so will be a period of enormous change and perhaps more than a little turbulence. Think of this as the process of humanity going into labor as it begins to birth a new earth reality. In this article, I offer what I consider the six keys to smoothly and successfully making the shift to the New Earth and becoming a charter member of a wonderful new era of humanity. Before diving into the practical advice that I have to offer, I’ll briefly explore the shift that is underway. As always, my articles are simply my perspective that I offer in the spirit of discovery and empowerment. Take what resonates for you, and leave the rest behind.

L

The Shift and the Ascent of Humanity The Earth and our entire solar system is being bathed in powerful cosmic energy causing the base frequency of the planet and everything on it to ascend. The Earth has transitioned from the 3rd to the 4th dimension, and it continues to slowly shift upward (check out The Multidimensional Universe to learn more about

frequency and dimensionality). This energy is triggering awakenings and shifts in consciousness of people all over the world. As our consciousness shifts to higher perspectives, we are taking our first baby steps towards transcending this realm of duality and separation. Even though the collective consciousness of humanity is ascending, many remain locked in 3D consciousness. This level of consciousness focuses on differences, separation, and limitation, and expresses as fear, self-serving and controlling behaviors, and us-against-them dog-eat-dog mentalities. The ultimate result of which is the creation of a world characterized by competition, conflict, and suffering. Those that can break free from 3D consciousness will have the pleasure of experiencing the birth and growth of a wonderful new era of humanity—one characterized by cooperation, harmony, peace, and prosperity for all. The key to participating in the new earth reality is to attain and maintain heightened levels of consciousness.

What to Expect During the Transition Period You can expect the next decade or two to be a period of unprecedented revelations and change. Many startling and even disturbing revelations and disclosures will unfold. These revelations will include the economic and geopolitical manipulations and fraud of the

global banking syndicate, the UFO/ ET presence and secrecy and related hidden technologies, and the suppression of free energy technology and other important technologies, and more. Many may be shocked and angered by what they learn. There may be some turbulence as the foundation of peoples’ beliefs are shaken to the core, and the winds of change start to rock our existing institutions and systems. How extensive this turbulence will be is impossible to predict, but one thing is for sure—your state of consciousness determines whether, and to what extent, you get entangled in it.

Two Worlds, One Playing Field Contrary to what some people believe about the trans-dimensional shift of earth from 3D to 4D, those who remain in 3D consciousness do not disappear from our 4D earth reality. We all remain visible to each other, and we will all appear to be on the same playing field. Despite appearances, it will be more like two separate worlds coexisting in the same space. Third density consciousness will play out, and this will be witnessed by those of us that have moved beyond 3D consciousness as the fall of the old world and its mentalities. Those that remain stuck in 3D consciousness won’t just witness this fall they will directly experience it and some of its associated unpleasantness. At

the same time, those that have transcended 3D consciousness will be experiencing the birthing of a wonderful new world and the worst of any unpleasantness will pass them by.

The 6 Keys to Successfully Making the Shift Many of us are well on our way to transcending 3D consciousness and have released many outmoded and limiting beliefs, buried negative emotions, and fears — others still have some work to do. In the challenging times ahead, there are some potential stumbling blocks that may trip some of us up and cause some backsliding. Here are six things that you can do to help avoid these stumbling blocks and stay on track to becoming a charter member of the New Earth. Release Your Emotional Baggage: Every soul who chose to have human experience knew that the separation from their divine source that the Earth game entailed would lead to some painful emotional experiences. To cope with it, many of us have deeply buried lots of emotional pain—pain that we have accumulated not only in this life but many others. An integral part of the awakening process and shift of consciousness that is sweeping across humanity, is the surfacing of our deeply buried emotions. This surfacing of emotions, although painful and disturbing at times, gives us the opportunity to address and release the emotions, as

Those that can break free from 3D consciousness will have the pleasure of experiencing the birth and growth of a wonderful new era of humanity—one characterized by cooperation, harmony, peace, and prosperity for all. The key to participating in the new earth reality is to attain and maintain heightened levels of consciousness.

well as forgive all those involved, including ourselves. These buried emotions are low frequency (negative) energies trapped within the energy field of your body. As the base frequency of earth—and everything on it —increases, these stuck emotions keep you tightly anchored to 3rd density earth reality, and will continue to adversely affect your physical health. If not addressed they will ultimately lead to your expiration from the Earth game. Another problem related to unreleased emotional baggage is that it will trigger the manifestation of increased adversity into your life. Because of the heightened base frequencies of everything in our reality, manifestation is quickening. Now, more than ever, any pent up negative emotional energy is a potent manifestation force that will draw adversity into your life. We can see this adversity happening every day. All of our emotional baggage is surfacing and releasing, giving the appearance that the world is worsening rather than improving. It’s a good sign, however, because once it’s all cleared, the state of our lives and the world will start improving and become far more harmonious. Ultimately, you won’t complete the shift to 4th density earth without releasing all your emotional baggage. You simply cannot stay with the new earth if you do not release all your emotional baggage. It is lower frequency energy that will keep you

anchored in 3rd density. Here’s a great article by world famous spiritual author, Deepak Chopra, on how to release your past and return to love and present moment focus. Or, consider reading this book, The Emotion Code: How to Release Your Trapped Emotions, before Dr. Bradley Nelson. Maintain the Sacred Neutral: Remember the importance of sacred neutrality. Find a way to not be drawn into the negativity that is rampant on our world. There are plenty of people whose awareness has not expanded yet that are still living in fear and negativity. Worse yet, our fear and negativity is being encouraged by a few with a very self-serving agenda. There is a small elite group of people lurking in the shadowy parts of our government, corporations, and the military/ industrial complex that want to maintain their power and control at all costs. Try not to get drawn into the confusion, mayhem, and nonsense that may ensue as the old begins to crumble. Stay grounded and detached from the chaos as you watch the drama play out, while you continue to be a living example of a new level of awareness. Do not be drawn into the fray and drama of those that do not want to let go of the old ways and the old world. Do not be drawn into the drama of those well-meaning people who are outraged by disturbing revelations, or the actions of others who allow themselves to become embroiled in the drama. This is their choice. Stay on your higher path. Stay centered in your heightened consciousness and keep the drama at bay. Stay out of the fray and focus your energy on maintaining your heightened perspective. Focus your energy

#2

on being a shining example of the new consciousness. Focus your energy on demonstrating this through your enterprises and in your local communities. Do whatever you can, however small, to contribute to creating the new paradigm wherever you are—in your enterprises, your communities, in your families. No matter what happens, strive to stay neutral and calm—be the “eye in the center of the hurricane” as the world storms around you. Make every effort not to engage in the drama, even if terrible things happen. Doing so only gives energy to and makes it worse. Remain centered in your higher perspective, principles, and ideals. Avoid the temptation to judge or condemn those embroiled in the drama, on either side, as good or bad, regardless of whether their actions seem justified or not. Judgment and condemnation never serve to heal these situations; they can only ever sustain them or make them worse. Be a living example of sacred neutrality, calmness, positivity, nonjudgment, and love in the face of the storm. Your example will be an immense help to all those that are struggling with and getting drawn into fear and negativity. Humbly and quietly share from your heart your perspective on the bigger picture if anyone asks how are you maintaining such calmness, such stability, such a positive outlook. This will be of great service to the world in the times ahead. Strive to keep this all in perspective. Remember that this is a journey and adventure that your soul chose. Even if you don’t remember why right now, there certainly was a reason why you chose it; why we all chose it. The challenges we are facing can be seen as unexpected chaos and lead to feelings of despair, or they can

be viewed as the anticipated and needed catalysts for our individual and collective spiritual growth, which leads to feelings of joy as we attain new levels of understanding and awareness. Send Unconditional Love and Forgiveness to Everyone Involved: As we begin to witness the fall of the old world and the mayhem that may ensue as 3D consciousness plays out, it is imperative that we send everyone involved unconditional love and forgiveness. Send it to innocent bystanders, send it to those you may view as unenlightened that allowed themselves to get caught up in it, and even send it to those that you may view as self-serving or dark, that may have been the instigators. As you observe the world in conflict and violence, remind yourself of your core principles and values. Rather than reacting with judgment and condemnation, consciously choose to respond with love and forgiveness. Forgive everyone involved and send as much healing love as you can to them. Do it in any way you know how, any way that resonates with you, but do it. Unconditional forgiveness and love is the secret sauce that holds the power to heal the entire world! Jesus knew it, Martin Luther King Jr. knew it, the Buddha knew it, and we know it. Accept that the Old Will Fall and Focus on Creating the New: We are birthing a new world, a new paradigm. As a part of this process, much of the old will fall. But, what will sprout up in its place are the very things we are creating from the grass roots up right now. Don’t be too concerned with the fall of the old. The old must wither and die to make room for the new. Like the plants that grow in

The Importance of Being “Awe Inspired”

by Dr Michael Murray ur emotional state has great influence over the degree of inflammation we may suffer from. Feeling “awe inspired” has been found to be the most powerful emotion in fighting inflammation.

O

Introduction The field of positive psychology is providing valuable insights on exactly how our emotions influence our physiology. One of our body functions that is very closely tied to our emotional experiences is the functioning of our immune system. Our emotional state not only influences how well we are protected from infection, but also the degree of inflammation that we may suffer from. Two new studies have found that the most powerful emotion in fighting inflammation is the feeling of awe.

Background Data While there have been a lot of studies on the impact of emotions on physical health, in general, these emotions are most often all lumped

From page 21 your garden; when fall comes, they wither and die, and then rot in the ground—but they enrich the soil. They must pass to make room for the new growth of spring. In the spring, the seedling sprouts anew. We are the seedlings—the seeds of the new world are being sown by us. Focus on the wonderful garden we are going to create together; the new paradigm we are birthing. If the seeds that fell spent all their energy on trying to stop their parents from withering and dying, they might very well exhaust themselves and be unable to sprout the next spring. Maintain the Highest Vision of a Smooth and Effective Shift: Even though the transitional period is likely to include some turbulence, its extent is by no means set in stone. Do not fall into

n most emergency situations, it’s best to get to an emergency clinic as soon as possible. But if your pet is choking, her life is in immediate danger and she might not make it to a clinic. In this case, taking matters into your own hands could save your pet’s life. Choking is most common among dogs (though it may also happen in cats). If you have a dog, in particular, I suggest you become familiar with how to perform the Heimlich maneuver. It’s relatively simple and could save your pet’s life. Once the object is cleared

From page 22 strongly correlated with lower levels of IL-6; however, awe was the strongest predictor of low IL-6 levels. The takeaway message from these studies is that it stresses the importance of fostering feelings of awe, in our lives, to positively influence the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Commentary O.K., let me answer the question “How do I experience more awe in my life?” Well, first of all, awe is often linked to feelings of social connectedness and social exploration. So from a practical perspective, the first step is to become more socially engaged. This goal is especially important if you are older or dealing with depression, because these situations often lead to social isolation. Here are some recommendations to become more socially engaged: • Get connected online. Using email, the Internet, and Web-based social networks

from your pet’s airway, get him to your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately. Another tool you can learn now to potentially save your pet’s life in an emergency is CPR. The American Red Cross offers classes in many areas that allow you to receive hands-on training with an animal mannequin. Hopefully you’ll never need to use the tips provided in this article, but the truth is that no one ever expects an emergency. Taking 20 minutes now to get prepared can make all the difference if the unexpected happens. such as Facebook or Twitter can make a big difference in helping people feel more connected. • Encourage positive relationships. A person is never too old to learn how to be a better friend, parent, mentor, or better listener. Personal development is a never-ending process. • Join a club or church. In today’s world, there are always opportunities to find places to socialize that are positive and healthful. • There is perhaps no greater opportunity to feel connected than by finding a way to volunteer time and energy towards a greater good. It is perhaps the most powerful way of connecting to people outside of our deepest personal relationships. The health benefits of increased socialization are significant. Many of these benefits may be related to fighting inflammation and studies indicate that people who feel connected and have strong social relationships

have lower levels of inflammatory markers in their blood. Next, I would ask the question “What inspires you and causes you to feel awe?” What research shows is that something as simple as listening to music, walking in nature, or being creative can have a positive impact on health. These effects may be related to feelings of awe. For me, the things that really make me say “wow” are research studies like this one above. I am constantly reading studies that create an awe-inspired appreciation of the wonder of nature or the way in which our body and mind function. Of course, just looking around at nature or the stars is pretty awe inspiring to me. My message to you is to find something that you can enjoy on a daily basis that makes you feel awe. Magnesium. This mineral is required to keep myelin—the insulation of brain cells—healthy. It also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which promotes the growth of new neurons and healthy connections among brain cells. A deficiency in magnesium can lead to depression, anxiety, symptoms of ADHD, insomnia and fatigue. Vitamin B-12. This vitamin, which often is deficient as we age, helps makes neurotransmitters that are key to mood and memory. Vitamin E. This potent antioxidant vitamin protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain—including DHA. Vitamin E–rich foods, but not supplements, are linked to the prevention of clinical depression as well as slower progression of Alzheimer’s disease. One reason may be that most supplements contain only alpha-tocopherol, while other vitamin E compounds, particularly tocotrienols, play important roles in brain function. Dietary fiber. A high-fiber diet supports healthy gut bacteria (the gut “microbiome”), which growing evidence suggests is key for mental health. Once Dr. Ramsey’s team identified the key nutrients, they used the USDA nutrient database to identify foods that packed the highest nutrient concentration into the fewest calories. That’s the Brain Food Scale. BOOSTING YOUR MOOD AT THE SUPERMARKET According to the Brain Food Scale, the best brain foods are mostly plant-based, but seafood, wild game and even some organ meats make the top of the list, too… Leafy greens such as kale, mustard greens and collard greens Bell peppers such as red, green and orange Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage Berries such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries Nuts such as pecans, walnuts, almonds and cashews Bivalves such as oysters, clams and mussels Crustaceans such as crab, lobster and shrimp Fish such as sardines, salmon and fish roe Organ meats such as liver, poultry giblets and heart Game and wild meat such as bison, elk and duck Eating these nutrient-dense foods is likely to help prevent and treat mental illness. Page 27

by Drew Ramsay ere’s a startling statistic—studies show that people who consume a healthy diet are 40% to 50% less likely to develop depression. What are the absolutely best nutrients—and most nutrient-packed foods—to protect your brain from depression and other ailments? Eat Complete author Drew Ramsey, MD, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an expert on nutrition and the brain, went on a scholarly quest to find out. The good news is that what protects mood also protects against dementia and other brain-related conditions. “We used depression in our research because that’s where all the data is,” explained Dr. Ramsey, “but depression can be considered a proxy for brain health.” So he developed a “Brain Food Scale” and presented his early findings to a packed crowd at the American Psychiatric Association’s 2016 annual meeting. He is preparing the scale for submission to an academic journal, but he has agreed to share its essential elements with Bottom Line readers here. “The brain is the biggest asset we have,” said Dr. Ramsey, “so we should be selecting foods that specifically nourish the brain.” Here’s how to build the healthiest brain possible—starting in your kitchen. NUTRIENTS BRAINS NEED MOST Dr. Ramsey and his colleagues scoured the scientific literature, including epidemiological studies and clinical trials, and identified these key nutrients as the most important… • Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. There are two major ones. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) creates hormones called “neuroprotectins and resolvins” that combat brain inflammation, which is implicated in the development of depression (as well as dementia). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) protects the cardiovascular system, important for a healthy brain. Zinc. This mineral plays a major role in the development of new brain cells and can boost the efficacy of antidepressant medications. Folate. Also known as vitamin B-9, folate is needed for good moods and a healthy brain. It helps produce defensin-1, a molecule that protects the brain and increases the concentration of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that’s crucial to memory and cognition. Iron. This essential element is a crucial cofactor in the synthesis of mood-regulating neurotransmitters including dopamine and serotonin.

Page 26 “When we treat someone with depression, our real goal is to prevent that person from ever getting depressed again,” said Dr. Ramsey. EVERYDAY BRAIN FOODS Not into eating beef heart? Having a little trouble stocking up on elk? Dr. Ramsey gets it, and he doesn’t expect everyone to eat only from the top of the Brain Food Scale. When it comes to meat, for example, wild game may not be widely available, but grass-fed beef, which is higher in omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally raised beef, is stocked in most supermarkets—and may be independently associated with protection from depression. Other foods that didn’t make it to the top of the Brain Food Scale but that still are very good for the brain include eggs (iron, zinc), beans (fiber, magnesium, iron) and fruits and vegetables of all colors (fiber, antioxidants). Plus, small quantities of dark chocolate,

which “gives you a little dopamine rush,” Dr. Ramsey said. Dopamine, he explains, is a neurotransmitter that provides a feeling of reward. To make it super simple, Dr. Ramsey has coined a rhyme to catch everyday brain foods… Seafood, greens/Nuts and beans.— And a little dark chocolate.

I yanked on that starter cord maybe a thousand times with no success, said one prayer to the angels, and voila! What a lesson! I could almost imagine a group of angels sitting around just waiting for me to ask them for help, perhaps having this conversation, “Any asking yet?” “No, he’s still pulling on that cord, trying to do it himself.” “How many hours has it been now, in Earth time?” “Hey, wait. He’s asking us for help. Finally! Okay, who wants to bless that motor?” I sincerely hope I can, once and for all, learn the joy of asking for help, from people, from angels—from those I can and can not see. I hope I can remember how much joy it gives others to help me. And, I hope I can remember that problem size doesn’t matter, that I can feel my dependence

by The Wilen Sisters ould you like to try a simple oneingredient natural facial that a beautiful star swears by? Here’s what it is… Actress and beauty authority Arlene Dahl shared her favorite facial mask with us. Beat two egg yolks, and apply them to your clean face, forehead and neck, carefully avoiding the sensitive area around your eyes. Leave it on for 20 minutes as you relax on a slant board with your feet about 30 degrees higher than your head. If you don’t have a slant board, improvise. Lie on your bed with pillows under your feet. Do not talk while relaxing—the egg yolk will crack, peel and fall off before it gets to do its work. At the end of 20 minutes, gently wash your face with lukewarm water and pat it dry. Your skin will be tightened and toned. Do this at least once a week.

remains makeup free for at least six to eight hours. Also, try to apply the mask right after you’ve taken a bath or shower or after you’ve gently steamed your face so that your pores are open and ready for a healthy treat.

We met Arlene Dahl several years ago at a TV studio. The lights were as bright as could be, and we stood right next to her. Not only was Ms. Dahl gracious and lovely, this senior citizen was truly beautiful and had flawless skin…a good reason to get out the egg yolks!

by Jon Rappoport “Let’s see, Mr. Reporter. You received an undercover recording of a medical researcher confessing his crimes. You posted the recording and wrote about it. You’re the one who is guilty of a crime. Next case!” “Wait, Your Honor! That recording is vital information for the public. It shows that a vaccine considered to be safe actually causes brain damage in children.” “No. It shows you violated the law by posting the recording. It was illegally made, and you aided and abetted and forwarded that crime. As I said, next case!”

specifically seeks to protect “healthcare providers” from “exposure” via “undercover recordings” documenting their crimes. Certainly, by stretching the definitions a bit, the CDC, for whom Thompson works, and Thompson himself, could be considered such healthcare providers. Lawyers could argue that position until the cows come home and hang up a case in various courts for years— while an injunction prohibiting the screening of Vaxxed remains in force. Nick Cahill, at the Courthouse News Service, reports

Buckle up.

The shocking film Vaxxed (http://VaxxedTheMovie.com) is drawing audiences all over the country. It details the confessions of a CDC researcher, William Thompson, who states that he and his colleagues buried data in a key study on the MMR vaccine. In the study, the vaccine was given a free pass, with assurances that it didn’t increase the risk of autism in children—when, in fact, the data showed it did increase that risk. The key moments in Vaxxed are audio recordings of CDC researcher Thompson confessing his sins. But wait. Now we have a bill, AB 1671, up before the California legislature. If it passes, it could make it a crime to screen Vaxxed or even write an article about it. T h o s e recordings of Thompson could be labeled “undercover,” and “illegal,” and therefore make them the target of AB 1671. F u r t h e rmore, AB 1671

aters in California. As bizarre as it seems, AB 1671 isn’t just targeting people who make the undercover recordings. Its focus is on reporters who receive those recordings and then use them, post them, and write about them. This lunatic attack on free speech coordinates tightly with the infamous 2015 California law, SB277, which made vaccinating California school children mandatory. Vaxxed certainly raises ominous questions about that law—and now the government of California is considering the addition of a new law that could ban Vaxxed.

DON’T EVEN REPORT VACCINE CRIMES.

on AB 1671 (“Abortion Clinic Sting Videos Sprout FreeSpeech Battle”, Thursday, August 11, 2016): “The bill would criminalize publishing undercover video footage of ‘health care providers’ and subject third parties, including journalists, to penalties for reporting and distributing the illegally recorded footage.” [My comment: It appears criminal penalties could be applied to anyone who posts the videos and comments on them, online. Not just reporters. And surely, audio recordings, as well as videos, would be banned.] Cahill continues: “Under AB 1671, a journalist receiving and posting footage from an anonymous source could be punished by the state as well as be opened up to potential civil lawsuits. Whistleblowers would not be exempt from the proposal either, regardless of how they obtained the illegal footage.” In the case of Vaxxed, the film makers received or obtained the recordings of CDC researcher Thompson and used them to make their case: Thompson was confessing to crimes he and colleagues committed at the CDC. But if AB 1671 passes, releasing those recordings and commenting on them, in a film, could be considered a crime, punishable by fine, jail—and the film makers could also be open to lawsuits. And of course, Vaxxed could be banned from all the-

“Your kids must get vaccinated, and don’t report vaccine crimes and vaccine damage, when the knowledge of that damage comes from ‘undercover recordings’.” That’s quite stunning, when you think about it. The California Gestapo is trying to expand its reach. Do you really think all this effort is coming from some genuine concern for “protecting the children?” If so, you’re badly mistaken. This is about naked suppression of the truth, big profits for vaccine manufacturers, and neurological damage in kids. If you don’t think so, see Vaxxed. While you can. Dear Reader, Editor’s Note: A similar such letter was sent to one woman who would no longer read this magazine [due to one particular feature/article] in it, even though she had been a Reader for many years. This was the response sent to her [several minor changes]. This seemed like good info for everyone. As you may know, we (Pattie & Thom) have published Connection Magazine for 24 years. During that time, we have been front and center in both educating you about the many health challenges we face from toxic corporate products and empowering you to act effectively against the governmental policies that attempt to force these products on us. In the late ‘90’s, we joined with some of you to stop the state mandated fluoridation of our drinking water. Thus began a 2-year campaign, with Connection Magazine leading the charge to educate our community about how toxic fluoride was, how many worldclass scientists and 1st-world countries opposed it, and how this

Lively Letters

agenda to fluoridate was driven by a profit-hungry chemical industry that would otherwise have to pay to store this toxic waste product. This campaign and the subsequent successful initiative we mounted—to call for a public vote before any fluoridation began—is the reason no one in Santa Cruz County is drinking fluoridated water today! Hopefully, you’re also aware that Connection Magazine began educating about the dangers of GMO foods, in 1995, many years before there were any local, state, or national efforts to label GMO’s, and once these movements began, Connection Magazine was the only local publication to regularly support these efforts. Long before smart meters were installed on our homes, Connection Magazine regularly published articles about the health issues caused by exposure to the EMF radiation emitted by cell towers & cell phones. We were also the only media to keep you informed in the late ‘90’s about the small cadre of activists who actively lobbied both the city and county to create regulations for the siting of cell towers in order to keep them away from neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals. I want to also mention our many months of reporting on citizen efforts to stop the state-mandated aerial spraying to “eradicate” the

light brown apple moth in 2007. While many were sickened during the 2 days of low-flying airplanes spraying us with an untested, uncertified chemical, the mainstream media reported these injuries as the result of over-active imaginations, and even made fun of those injured. Not Connection Magazine, however, where these injuries were reported as legitimate, and the logical result of being exposed to poison. The quick growth of this movement to “Stop the Spray” ultimately led to its cancellation. When the EPA later denied this chemical certification, as it was unsafe to spray on people, you didn’t read that in the Sentinel, Good Times, or other local rag, but you did read about it in Connection Magazine. We’ve also been active for many years in informing readers about the dangers of vaccines. When opposition to SB277, the mandatory vaccine bill for children, began to build, which local media did their turn to in order to reach out to the larger community? That’s right: Connection Magazine where we continue to publish news of this movement. Finally, for those of you who welcome the reform of marijuana laws, I‘ll remind you that for over a decade now Connection Magazine has committed at least one page each month to ongoing education about the health benefits of can-

nabis, as well as informing readers about the continuing successes of the reform movement throughout the U.S. . We have received mixed reviews for our article on the Presidential candidates in our May Issue. In responding to the critical feedback, we can only point out that given our long history of reporting on the many health issues listed above, many of which are the direct result of policies created by our elected representatives, it is only logical that we would focus on what the candidates’ stances are on these issues. And, it takes quite a bit of “due diligence” to find out what some of these stances are, since they are not covered by the mainstream media, which finds no dangers in fluoridation, pesticide spraying of urban populations, GMO’s, mandatory vaccines, nor EMF radiation. We apologize if your disapproval of this one article has resulted in your no longer wanting to read Connection Magazine and the many other great issues we cover. True, LifeLong Learners (as so many of Connection Magazine readers are) are encouraged to read all you can, including this well-researched paper. We can’t please all the people, all the time. My Go-To Salad After Heavy Eating & Big Meals! Food Babe’s Lentil Detox Salad by Vani Hari

fter heavy eating or big meals, I like making a big batch of this lentil detox salad. When I posted the ingredients to this salad on Instagram the feedback was incredible! So many of you made it and loved it. Now, I’ve documented it here so you can refer back to this recipe over and over again! If you haven’t tried it, it is a must! I call it a “detox salad” because it contains a very detoxifying herb called cilantro. There’s actually no lettuce in this salad—the cilantro makes up all the greens. Cilantro can help the body rid itself of heavy metals, reduce water weight, is a cancer fighter and can improve memory with its brain protecting vitamins and minerals. It’s an herb I like to incorporate in juices, in soups, and especially salads like this one. This is also a salad you can enjoy warm or make ahead of time and store in the fridge for a few days—just remember to chop the avocado later right before serving. Note: If don’t want to use cilantro, try arugula, parsley or kale instead.

but it left sellers even more confused. Were dispensaries allowed to profit? The guy who wrote the law, late state Sen. John Vasconcellos, said sure. Others, including former L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, said medical weed had to be a nonprofit enterprise. The rules and enforcement issues weren’t fully worked out until last year, when Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act. Meanwhile, cities including Los Angeles struggled to keep a lid on hundreds of new dispensaries opening during the period of regulatory chaos. By 2010, years of problems policing and monitoring medical sales had taken a toll on the credibility of propot activists. It became clear that if pot legalization was going to attract majority support in California, any ballot initiative was going to have to be about more than the freedom to get high. It was going to have to delve into the details about how this was all going to work. And proponents were going to have to step up their political game. Page 39 They did.

by Dennis Romero alifornians first threatened to legalize recreational marijuana by ballot initiative in 1972. It failed 66% to 33%. We tried again in 2010. It was voted down 53% to 46%. Now we’re back at it. This time, though Proposition 64 looks like a sure thing. Polls show support for legalization in general at 55%, and 60% among likely voters. What’s so different this time around? Ye s , demographics and attitudes have shifted here, like everywhere. But you also have to understand what went wrong back in 2010. At the time, California—the state that pioneered pot for the people— seemed poised to become the first state to legalize recreational marijuana, but the cause was unexpectedly hurt by the state’s convoluted history with medical marijuana. When medical marijuana was legalized here by ballot initiative in 1996, it was ground-breaking—but the law itself left many unanswered questions: How would pot be sold to patients? How would the state regulate those sales? State legislation, SB 420, tried to sort that out,

Page 38 Six years ago, Proposition 19 was a one-man-band of an initiative run by Oakland cannabis entrepreneur Richard Lee. Today’s effort, Proposition 64, by contrast, is so professional it scares some old-school marijuana activists. Even some pro-marijuana groups are uncomfortable with how the measure is written to appeal to law-and-order voters. For instance, Proposition 64 would have the state establish a Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regul at i on in th e Department of Consumer Affairs to police t h e i n d u s t r y. Taxes of 15% at the cash register would pay for that agency and benefit police. The law also allows cities like Los Angeles to continue to limit or ban dispensaries, recreational or not. “It's 60% legalization,” Ellen Komp, deputy director of California NORML, has said. The authors of Proposition 64 have thought through the details this time. But that might be just the right amount for California voters. The Yes on 64 campaign has been endorsed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California NAACP. It is so sophisticated that it has a Latino outreach arm. Amid threats last year that rival marijuana groups might put competing measures on the ballot in November, Yes on 64 cleared the field and got most pro-pot soldiers to fall in line. It has raised nearly $8.5 million, including $2.5 million from former Facebook President Sean Parker. Voters may, for the first time, see pro-legalization campaign advertisements. The opposition, meanwhile, has raised only $163,370, and its campaign is relying on old scare-tactic arguments: Legalization will expose more teens to marijuana, bring pot stores to every corner, or allow pot ads on TV. The No on 64 crowd also asserts the initiative is a scheme to allow Parker and his ilk to create Big

Tobacco-style pot companies. It’s true the measure would allow vertically integrated enterprises—from the farm to the pot shop—but not before 2023. And large producers would not be allowed to merge, according to the Drug Policy Alliance’s reading of the ballot language. The authors of Proposition 64 have thought through the details this time. It wasn’t just California’s pot activists that learned from the loss in 2010. Stephen Gutwillig, then the state director of Drug Policy Alliance, said in 2010 that Proposition 19 “moved marijuana legalization into the mainstream of American politics.” Indeed, it set the stage for Colorado to legalize recreational weed in 2012. Oregon, Washington and Alaska followed. That moved the spotlight off California for a few years, but also gave voters here a picture of what orderly legalization could look like. Once Proposition 64 passes, expect things to move quickly. California is the nation’s No. 1 cannabis producer, and there’s already a pot economy here. Just last summer, the state Board of Equalization estimated that there were 935 medical pot dispensaries already operating in the city of Los Angeles. That’s more than twice the number (440) of licensed recreational shops in the entire state of Colorado. California’s ready to lead the green rush again. Dennis Romero is a staff writer for the L.A. Weekly who has been covering marijuana laws since 2009.
