by Kelsey Hill Recent events, like this year’s unusual general election, make it clear that the present is a unique historical moment in this country. More than ever, people are standing up to demand systematic change — calling for governance that moves away from “business as usual and toward a sustainable and more inclusive future for everyone. From Black Lives Matter and their stance against institutional racism, to the Native American protests in North Dakota fighting to preserve the Standing Rock Sioux’s ancestral land from the dangers of fracking, people who have been historically silenced are demanding to be heard. Drew Glover, 30, is currently running for a seat on the Santa Cruz city council with these ideals in mind. The local activist and nonprofit CEO has been endorsed by the group “Santa Cruz for Bernie along with three other progressive candidates, Chris Krohn, Steve

Schnaar, and Sandy Brown. This slate, coined “Brand New Council, aims to continue the momentum ignited by Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign and fill the open four council seats this November. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, Glover believes

Drew Glover his experience as a working class, mixed race child gives him a unique, and much needed, perspective to bring to city politics. “I know what it’s like to have a family that lives paycheck to paycheck, always worrying about housing, money and food security, Glover states. “I know what it is like to feel frus-

trated by the local political process and the feeling of being ignored, belittled or second guessed by those in power. This is why he has brought together a large grassroots campaign — full of people from all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles — to get a broader voice represented in the Santa Cruz city council. The tenets of his platform focus on sustainability, housing, and transportation, and has signed on to the progressive platform compiled by “Santa Cruz for Bernie. Santa Cruz is an icon of progressivism, and it is not immune to the country’s demand for widespread change and grassroots initiatives. These remarkable times we live in have incited many people to take up the call to change their own communities, and Drew Glover is an example of that bottom-up approach to local politics.

Vote-by-mail begins Oct. 10 and election day is Nov. 8.

Mandatory Vaccination in CA: Let’s School a Federal Judge

by Jon Rappoport I’ll repeat myself a bit here, in case you missed my last article. Then I’ll get into something else, something dangerous that a Federal Judge knows nothing about… Federal Judge Dana Sabraw is overseeing a lawsuit against mandatory vaccination in California. So far, Sabraw has denied a petition to suspend mandatory vaccination for school children while the case moves forward. He believes tradition and history are on the side of forced vaccinations. That’s because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Or he’s just making it up out of thin air. As the LA Times reports: “U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw in San Diego wrote that state Legislatures have ‘a long history of requiring children to be vaccinated as a condition to school enrollment, and for as many years, both state and federal courts have upheld those requirements against constitutional challenge’.”

I don’t see how Judge Sabraw’s opinion could be more ridiculous. Why? Because ‘the long history’ he refers to is quite different.

as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) deaths. These represent about 10 to 15% of the total number of SIDS deaths occurring annually in the U.S.A. (between 8,000 and 10,000

Judge Sabraw: here’s something you didn’t know about the DPT shot… The states have always upheld exemptions from vaccination on several grounds: medical waiver, religious objection, philosophical objection. Hello? THAT’S the tradition. SB277, the new CA law, goes against the tradition, to say the very least. SB277 breaks new ground in allowing the state to operate as a medical fascist

DTP shot—diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough). Let’s give Judge Sabraw a history lesson. You know: actual history. Buckle up. “Assistant Secretary of Health Edward Brandt, Jr., MD, testifying before the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, rounded… figures off to 9,000 cases of convulsions, 9,000 cases of collapse, and 17,000 cases of high-pitched screaming for a total of 35,000 acute neurological reactions occurring within forty-eight hours of a DPT shot among America’s children every year.” (DPT: A Shot in the Dark, by Harris L. Coulter and Barbara Loe Fischer, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich) “… Based on the only U.S. findings on adverse DPT reactions, an FDA-financed study at the University of California, Los Angeles, one out of every 350 children will have a convulsion; one in 180 children will experience high-pitched screaming; and one in 66 will have a fever of 105 degrees or more [all signs of acute and very serious neurological reaction].” (Jennifer Hyman, Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, New York, special supplement on DPT, dated April, 1987) “A study undertaken in 1979 at the University of California, Los Angeles, under the sponsorship of the Food and Drug Administration, and which has been confirmed by other studies, indicates that in the U.S.A. approximately 1,000 infants die annually as a direct result of DPT vaccinations, and these are classified

depending on which statistics are used).” (Leon Chaitow, Vaccination and Immunization, CW Daniel Company Limited, Saffron Walden, Essex, England, 1987) “…in 1970/71, there were more than 33,000 cases of pertussis with 41 fatal cases among the very well immunized British child population; whereas in 1974/75, with a declining rate of vaccination, a pertussis epidemic caused only 25,000 cases with 25 fatalities.” (Wolfgang Ehrengut, Lancet, Feb. 18, 1978, p. 370) “… Barker and Pichichero, in a prospective study of 1232 children in Denver, Colorado, found after DTP that only 7% of those vaccinated were free from untoward reactions, which included pyrexia (53%), acute behavioral changes (82%), prolonged screaming (13%), and listlessness, anorexia and vomiting. 71% of those receiving second injections of DTP experienced two or more of the reactions monitored.” (Lancet, May 28, 1983, p. 1217) “Publications by the World Health Organization show that diphtheria is steadily declining in most European countries, including those in which there has been no immunization. The decline began long before vaccination was developed. There is certainly no guarantee that vaccination will protect a child against the disease; in fact, over 30,000 cases of diphtheria have been recorded in the United Kingdom in fully immunized children.” (Leon Chaitow, Vaccination and Immunization, p. 58) “Pertussis (whooping

cough) immunization is controversial, as the side effects have received a great deal of publicity. The counter claim is that the effectiveness and protection offered by the procedure far outweigh the possible ill effects… annual deaths, per million children, from this disease over the period from 1900 to the mid-nineteen seventies, shows that from a high point of just under 900 deaths per million children (under age 15) in 1905, the decline has been consistent and dramatic. There had been a lowering of mortality rates of approximately 80% by the time immunization was introduced on a mass scale, in the mid-nineteen fifties. The decline has continued, albeit at a slower rate, ever since. No credit can be given to vaccination for the major part of the decline since it was not in use.” (Chaitow, Vaccination and Immunization, p. 63) Again, the DPT shot will be required and mandatory in California for school children. It helps to know history, especially since major media refuse to touch the truth with a ten-foot pole. Shoot your child up with the DPT vaccine? Go along to get along? Bury your head in the sand? Martial Spirit: To Go Deeper, Go Deeper S by Ted Mancuso ome people call it “rooting. Some call it “centering. Others just “sinking. In almost every martial art, we have the concept of dropping, centering and sinking. A good martial artist must “have legs. People sense that there is a personal component to this search for stability. For instance, when they join our studio, hoping to learn some secrets of the practice, in response to the question, “What are you seeking? they often will answer, “grounding, pertaining to their whole life, believing that martial studies is a form of therapy. There is something to this goal, but it is not approached in just one manner. There are many ways to practice, and each martial art displays its own unique flavor. In Tai Chi, we stand like a post, promoting a general relaxation, as we turn our listening inward. Another approach found in Baji practices “bear steps, a heavy shambling of weight from one side to the other, going right through your legs and into the ground. A martial approach such as this may start as an exercise, but it is common for it to develop into a personal exploration. For instance, among the many things we learn is that sinking requires relaxation. Oh, I know, you’ve worked out, been to your trainer, re-

laxed with a latte; but when you stand, you are all by yourself, just you and your tensions. You surprise yourself with all the hidden hot spots. This is a meditation with a feedback loop. As you feel everything sinking

Ted Mancuso in your body, you also feel whatever resistance your body is mustering. You realize that there is an “internal aspect to even the most physical exercise, and only your inward glance rectifies the rebellion. A martial game called Push Hands raises a new face of rooting practice, something like a tea party version of Sumo wrestling where two people engage, trying to uproot the opponent from his or her spot. The point is not so much to push my partner, as to sense and redirect his intention. He begins to contemplate a push, for instance, and a slight movement on my part

discourages and neutralizes such a possibility. It is easy to see that the more deeply you can sense yourself, the more deeply you can sense information from others. True, there are many ways to self-connect, to “love yourself firstâ€? as some gurus might suggest. But most of these people telling you to visualize peacocks in the rainbow and some such are all conveniently missing once you’ve bought their book, watched their DVD or throw some coin into the collection plate. Why is the practice of rooting so important? Because it is a practice. And practices of this depth have an element of self-correction in them. This is a practice where repetition counts and you are not wandering around abandoned. To go deep is to find strength, but even more importantly, to see that which is substantial in your character, regardless of what you believe today or think tomorrow.

Root, and gain gravitas.Â

practice is in five parts and includes

uttering God’s name in prayer, spiritual lessons, stories and interpretations, devotional chanting and singing and lastly, closing prayers that include prayers for the peace and well being of all. Such a practice, regularly maintained, brings a person closer to his or her faith and provides a strong foundation to maintain ones faith throughout the day. Practice #3: Smaranam is the constant remembrance of God’s presence. In this practice we begin through an intellectual understanding that God and all of creation are not separate. Taking this to heart will change the practitioner’s outlook on life as it becomes difficult to take things for granted or act out of i n t eg r i t y when we remember God is everywhere and in all things. When we experience this understanding as truth, how we act, how we use the resources around us and how we treat others becomes exemplary of how we love God. Practice #4: Pada Sevanam is showing our devotion through serving God. This is a type of service that few actually accomplish. This type of serving must be selfless in nature. This means that we do it out of our love for God only, without any thought gain, return or benefit to ourselves. Imagine everyone in your town or village engaging selfless service! These four practices alone, along with the eight disciplines of Bhakti Yoga are game changing elements for anyone who wishes to become more loving, kind, compassionate and closer to God. Let’s resume next month with Practice #5. Until then, keep practicing at being the best human you can be. by Christopher Love uality is the foundation of dichotomy. This is more apparent to me than ever before as I look around my world today. When I tune in with human kind I feel a sense of polarization; opposing opposites are so apparent to me. We pray for peace, wear shirts with smiley faces and display peace signs on bumpers. We also sue our neighbors, bomb civilian populations to secure oil fields and even trample people to death to be the first to get a new television. I believe that the nine practices of Bhakti Yoga, practiced daily have the power to change the polarization I see in our world and assist us in creating a much more unified field of consciousness. Last month we explored the word god and set some precedent in it’s use and meaning. The nine practices are not specific to a particular belief in a particular god. Whatever your spiritual orientation of choice is, these practices can serve you to live more closely to your understanding of God and be authentic in your outward expression of your faith. When I use the word god, hence forth, please reference your own connection with God. Practice #1: Shravanam is listening to spiritual stories. This can be fulfilled by hearing stories told by ministers, elders, brahmans, medicine people and even common folk who have inspirational stories to share. You can also read stories that are inspiring and this includes scripture reading. Stories give us real life people and circumstances to connect with and help us relate spiritual concepts and integrate them into our lives. Practice # 2: Kirtana is a specific set of practices that happen in succession that can be adapted to most any spiritual tradition. Some elements of kirtana can be found in most traditional religions. The

or 10 years, Common Vision has been planting school orchards in Sacramento food deserts. This week, Common Vision is excited to be adding 4 new orchards to the 17 we already sustain for school children all over the Sacramento Area. But we desperately need your help. Unlike other Common Vision orchards in Ventura, Richmond, and other cities throughout CA, our Sacramento programs do not have a dedicated funding stream and these orchards are in jeopardy. We need YOUR help to make sure our children can keep receiving tons of fruit right on their school campus.

We’ve always been the type to do things a little different. Over the next 10 days, we will be planting new orchards at 4 Sacramento schools and we are inviting you to literally join us and hundreds of kids, in real time via livestream as we connect our food, ourselves and the natural world. We need your help NOW. With programs scheduled for this week, we’re asking you to help us to #KeepCalmAndPlantOn by supporting fruit tree orchards and Sacramento School children with your donation.

ABOUT COMMON VISION

Formed in 2005, Common Vision is creating a Healthy and Just Society by growing fruit tree orchards in low-income schools. Over the past 10 years, we’ve planted more than 6,000 fruit trees throughout California and built a reputation for improving the lives of students and teachers.

N o t only do Common Vision orchards produce 150,000 lbs of organic fruit every year (so far), they are also living classrooms where kids learn about environmental science, climate change, nutrition, and teamwork. We envision a world where sustainable agricultural provides all people with access to high quality and culturally appropriate foods; a world where agriculture is a tool for reversing climate change and supporting social equity. “From professional tree care services including irrigation and soil management to strong educational programming, the staff and volunteers from Common Vision are making a huge impact on school environments in California.â€? — Kate Casale, Youth Development Specialist, Alameda County 2IĂ€FH RI (GXcation “Common Vision’s long-term relationships with schools, partners, and volunteers proves their dedication to improving access to fresh food for today’s children and ability to scale up as opportunities arise.â€? - Jodi /HYLQH :ULJKW ([HFXWLYH DQG )RXQGLQJ 'LUHFWRU (DUWKURRWV “I believe wholeheartedly that the work they are doing in school gardens is positively shaping the way future generations will think about how food is grown, how this impacts their health, and how we can care for and preserve our planet’s resources.â€? .HOOL %DUUDP *DUGHQ (GXFDWLRQ 6SHFLDOLVW :DVKLQJWRQ (OHPHQtary School. by Melissa Ott & David Shaw When you envision Santa Cruz County in five, ten, or twenty years into the future, what do you see? If your ideal vision includes more land cultivated for farming and experiential learning around food, nature connection, social justice, and community building, you’re not alone. Santa Cruz County will soon be home to more educational farms and gardens, thanks to Santa Cruz Permaculture, a new local organization based that provides community development, land stewardship, ho-

listic education, and eco-social design services for a thriving, just and sustainable world. Permaculture is an ethically based whole-systems design approach that uses concepts, principles, and methods derived from ecosystems, indigenous peoples, and other time-tested systems to create human settlements and institutions. It’s also been called “saving the planet while throwing a better party”— and you’re invited! With a vision to create a network of land-based living and learning communities throughout the county over the coming years, Santa Cruz Permaculture is currently offering six-month permaculture design courses that take place on select weekends, starting in October and April each year. The course includes 110 hours of hands-on activities, field trips, and presentations, with an option to enroll in the full course or choose specific weekends to participate. The second six-month course of 2016 begins Saturday, October 8,

Editor’s Note:

David Shaw’s work and education regarding Permaculture is outstanding. Couple this Article with the HEIRLOOM SEED Article by Gina Locatelli and Allen Morgan and one will receive an enlightening view of Permaculture in the Northern Hemisphere. Check out what is going on in the Southern Hemisphere with Permaculture on page 22. And, then in the Southern Hemispere, the THEME will be regarding another farm and the lastest update on what is going on with ‘The Seeds’, etc. Our help from the Northern Hemisphere is needed now to help the world and the Southern Hemisphere. Tune in, take action and make a ‘much needed’ difference. Thank you! and registration is available online. Upon successful completion of the Permaculture Design Certificate, graduates will be able to: assess the sustainability of current design systems and practices; define permaculture ethics and the principles of sustainability; employ natural patterns as a design tool in a wide variety of contexts; understand basic soil ecology and implement composting methods; design simple water harvesting systems, from home to broadacre scale; define and design “guilds” or constructed plant communities; understand local food issues and the importance of localization; translate ecological principles to a variety of social, economic, and educational settings; employ best practices for starting and sustaining intentional communities and Ecovillages; and apply permaculture methods to educational curriculum design and the creation of school garden programs. This course is the first step in providing more permaculture design education to people in Santa Cruz so that those who want to create a network of community farms and gardens in the county can come together with the skills necessary to make it happen. David Shaw founded Santa Cruz Permaculture in February 2016 with this vision that is inspired by the experiential agroecology education that has been taking place since 1967 through the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture, as well as his studies of Ecovillages and Intentional Communities worldwide. The CASFS Apprenticeship program

is a six-month, hands-on intensive course that provides practical training in small-scale farming and organic gardening, while exploring how we can shift the food system to better support social, economic, and environmental justice. Shaw was an apprentice at CASFS from 2005-2006 and has been teaching at UCSC since 2004, where he founded the Kresge College Common Ground Center in 2012. “We want to support people in using permaculture to add value to their lives, whether it’s creating a backyard food forest, water catchment system, regenerative business, natural building, or full-blown sustainable community,” he says. “We want to do in the Santa Cruz community what people have been doing at the UCSC Farm for fifty years, and also move beyond the garden to

create regenerative designs for our homes, public places, and bio-region as a whole. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we draw from the immense toolkit of permaculture practices, and collaborate.” Shaw has brought together a unique team of guides and learning

partners for Santa Cruz Permaculture, all of whom you can read about on the website, that represents a broad range of experiences in natural building, ecological restoration, inter-generational learning, placemaking, bird language, grass-fed animal raising, soil building, agroforestry, water conservation, farm and wilderness skills, conversational leadership, ethnobotany, and much

more. With different folks teaching each session, the course as a whole provides a variety of opportunities to engage with the four strategic priorities of Santa Cruz Permaculture: Nature Connection, Cultural Competence, Cultural Creativity, and Personal Empowerment. In today’s world, we could all use more of these priorities in our lives. Each day on this planet, our actions grow and strengthen the roots of the future. If you’re seeking skills and experiences to foster ecological and social connectivity and justice in our local and global communities for today and the future, sign up for the permaculture design course with Santa Cruz Permaculture. It launches October 8, 2016, and you can sign up for all six months of experiential learning or even just one session. If you’re reading this after October 8, the next course begins in April 2017 and registration is currently available. Learn more, register for the course, sign up for the e-newsletter, and be part of creating a more just and sustainable future at SantaCruzPermaculture.com.

Are You a Partner for Sacred Land Farm in Vilcabamba, Ecuador?

“Your land told me to invite people to come to the farm intending to give…and the land will gift them with just what they need.” Thus said our farm partner, Martine Sweeney from Santa Cruz, several months ago on her last visit here. We decided to take her remarkable advice, because we ourselves had come to the farm intending to give. As a result, we have found deep peace and joy here. We hereby invite you to our farm intending to give. Serendipity being what it is, Pattie and Thom, Publishers of Connection Magazine, met us on the internet, fell in love with the story of the farm and invited us to be featured in this Center Theme— just when we decided to reach out for partners. So, let us introduce ourselves. We are Walter Moora and Susan Davis Moora and we design partnerships relevant to your own ‘life’s paths’. What is Sacred Land Farm (FincaSagrada.com)? We are

in Vilcabamba, Ecuador Our inspiration is the indigenous saying of the Americas that “neither the people of the North nor the South will thrive until the Condor and the Eagle fly as one.”

manifesting an intercultural, biodynamic, self-supporting farm community over which the Condor and the Eagle fly as one.

What Do You Mean That Your Land Gave Martine A Message?

Initially, we didn’t really know why we bought the farm 6 years ago…we just felt we had to do so. By seeking oneness with the land, we gradually discovered that it was remarkable land indeed. It is 50 minutes from our home in the storied village of Vilcabamba in the southern mountains of Ecuador and it had been untended for a long time. We began creating a biodynamic farm out of the overgrown pastures and bringing cows, goats, burros, horses, bees and fish onto the farm. We raised more and more of our own food and developed trusting relationships with our Ecuadorian neighbors. A young man from the nearby village of Tumianuma, Cristian Ojeda, became our partner and family member. A Canadian woman homeopath vis-

ited for a day, fell in love with our impenetrable fique forest and told us the land told her to tend it. We invited her to move in and she created a “Magical Forest” there, with frequent visitors. Then, when Martine came to visit and first stepped on the land three years ago, she told us that mythical children from Vedic times came running to her, skipping and laughing. They told her how this land had been the home of a Vedic temple and mystery school and that these energy centers needed to be re-opened. She was able to walk the land with us and show us exactly where the sacred sites were. Since then, a psychic from Hawaii told us the same thing from there!

Honoring our Sacred Sites

This changed our understanding dramatically and since then, we have sought to honor the four sacred sites on the farm. We have also serendipitously met elders of the Four Nations of La Sierra Nevada (“the Kogi”) through a global network called The Fountain. This network, created by Jyoti Prevott (founder of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers), is one of 40 innovation networks in sustainability which Susan has served over 40 years (see KINSinnovation.org). The Fountain’s mission is that “we are restoring a global economy of reciprocity, inspired by nature and the sacred.”

The Kogi told the members of The Fountain that the sacred sites of our farm were important to reopen because the spiritual center of Earth was now moving from the Himalayas to the Andes. They asked that The Fountain members meet here—and, that is just what they did two years ago. Since then, we have located the original indigenous people of our valley, the Palta tribe, with whom we are now developing relationships.

How We Farm

We are creating a self-sustaining farm eco-system where we grow most of our own food. We farm Biodynamically and follow Permaculture Principles. Although our farm has a twelve hundred acre mountain, which we hope to reforest, we mainly use the bottom twelve acres of irrigated pastures, orchards, gardens and some forest. Walter brings to the farm his 40 years of biodynamic experience on four continents and Cristian brings the local knowledge of plants and animals and how things are done in Ecuador. As Walter and Cristian teach our interns how to steward Earth, Susan guides them on finding their destiny paths, which is her area of expertise.

The Farm Buildings and Capacity

For The Fountain meeting, we somehow managed to host almost 30 people on our farm, however, we are not a retreat facility. We have two adobe cabins, made from an adobe mine on our farm, with a compost toilet and an outdoor kitchen and shower. We have two big walk-in tents, tree houses and

Page 20 ♥ Connection Magazine ♥ www.ConnectionMagz.com ♥ Facebook.com/ConnectionOnline ♥ October 2016

an earth-bag house, also with an outdoor kitchen and a shower. Then, to accommodate an intentional community, we built a large house and community center, with two large bedrooms and a secondfloor bunk-room. The community center’s living room can host 30 people on chairs in a circle for “KINS” meetings.

Our Invitation to Partners

We offer internships for one month and more as described at FincaSagrada.com. And, now, we have reached a mature point and are

A Home for KINS Networks

The farm is also becoming a home for these KINS network meetings, such as the meeting for The Fountain. This December, about 20 people from around the world will be joining us for a week, exploring various innovations from some half-dozen different KINS networks. Please join in solidarity with the Human Family to unite in this Global Action by coordinating this peaceful action on October 22-making ‘Mandalas of Seeds’ in your most public plaza. Invite the press & publish widely on social media. Currently, there is a proposed law before the national congress of Ecuador that would modify the existing constitutional law which prohibits Genetically Modified Seed (GMOs). Ecuador inspired the world with its protection of nature’s rights and prohibition of GMO’s in it’s constitution in 2008. That makes it one of the most GMO-free countries in the world. Please join in our peaceful global action to protect this national ban on GMOs. This new law, currently being considered by the EC national congress, would make all seed illegal that is not “certified seed”. Under the guise of “protecting biodiversity” and “improving genetics”, this law would dismantle the GMO prohibition. We believe that the Government does not need to control what nature already manages very well. Condor and Eagle dance together Zia Parker “Seeds have a greater sense of humor and bravery than humans. They obey long, long drawn-out plans, plans beyond the mind of men, that come down written inside the seeds, by their having to adapt to every kind of ice age, drought, wind, climatic cycles, the impacts of ice-tailed comets, deep serpentine primordial strata of earlier underground seas, cloudbursts, hurricanes, and more; mutating together and obeying the roll of the dice of the knee bones of the Grand Female of chaos whose womb’s offspring is Time.” “The people knew that not only were they dependent on the generosity of animals and plants that regularly died to sustain them but that their own life cycles were relegated thereby to the same rules as followed by plants.” Martin Prechtel “The Unlikely Peace at Cuchumaquic”

Why Do We Hold Onto Clutter?

by Megan Montero hy do we hold onto clutter? Why is it so difficult to let it go? The answer is fear. Fear we will need it in the future. Fear that we are less than without it. Fear of making a mistake. Fear that we will loose the memory attached to it, even though it stays tucked away, never to be seen again. Fear that we will miss it when it’s gone.

These are fears about the past and the future. What about the present? How do you feel right now about your X,Y’s and Z’s? Honoring your present moment feelings about your belongings, or about anything, is liberating. This is honoring yourself. Honoring your feelings, no matter how uncomfortable, ultimately always feels better than resisting them. Fear takes over and keeps us from being present with our true self and from living joyful lives. Fear is a natural emotion that has gotten out of control in our society, it’s an epidemic. Fear is the emotion associated with the water element and the mind. Fear in balance protects us and springs us into action when

fear of fear. This fear is your mind taking over your life, masking your heart voice. The heart knows and the mind hesitates; you can put your mind in service to your heart. We all have a mind that likes to take over the show and we all have a wise heart who patiently waits for the mind to quiet down. Joy is the emotion associated with heart, love and the element of fire. Love and the guidance of heart transform our lives; they antidote to the mind. While clutter clearing, feel and acknowledge your fear and ask your heart, “Does this make my heart sing? Is this truly useful to me and serving a positive purpose in my life?” When you choose to keep only the

things that bring you joy and serve a positive purpose, you will transform your life. It’s not about ‘getting rid of things’, but about taking the time to decide what you truly want to keep and cherishing the things that bring you joy. When we have more than we love and use, the too much combined with things that don’t bring joy, waters down the specialness of the things you actually cherish. When we let those things go, we are able to appreciate and enjoy what we have kept because their essence and sparkle isn’t being cluttered by the other things. Our home is a mirror that reflects the energies of our belongings back to us. Surrounding ourselves with the things that reflect our joy, along with the cherished useful things that keep our lives going, is a positive affirmation for a happier and healthier life. Fear and doubt will always be there, it’s what we do with the fear. Successful, happy people feel the fear and do it anyway. Ask your heart what it feels and transform your life with love. Bayer-Monsanto: A “Marriage Made in Hell”? By Ty Bollinger

Monsanto has agreed to be sold to Bayer for $56.5 billion − a deal worth a total of $66 billion when Monsanto’s debt is taken into account. The combined company would be the world’s largest seller of both seeds and agrichemicals. Monsanto, arguably the most loathed GMO company on the face of the earth, has been the subject of heated discussions for decades, especially in recent days as their top-selling product (RoundUp) contains glyphosate, which has been linked to cancer, autism, and respiratory sickness. Monsanto has lobbied widely and even filed lawsuits to prohibit labeling of GMO products and bury the World Health Organization’s report listing glyphosate as a probable carcinogen. If Monsanto joins forces with Bayer (one of the most hated Big Pharma companies in the world), the resulting “marriage made in hell” would be a drug-seed-pesticide company that controls almost 1/3 of the world’s seed market and almost ¼ of the pesticide market. Many would argue that this would equate to a monopoly. More on that topic later in the article. But this would not be the first time Monsanto and Bayer have teamed up. During the Vietnam War, both firms were involved in the development of Agent Orange. And both firms are currently involved in the GMO market today. Speaking of GMOs, I was watching Fox News Channel a couple of days ago and the “expert” being interviewed said that this was necessary in order to feed the world and that GMO foods are the only solution. WRONG! Apparently said “expert” is unfamiliar with the recent research, specifically the IAASTD Report, which is the most comprehensive report on the future of food and agriculture (sponsored by the World Bank and the UN, written by over 400 scientists and endorsed by 59 countries). In this report, they did not endorse GMOs as a solution to world hunger. In addition, genetic engineering has not significantly increased U.S. crop yields, according to the USDA and controlled comparative studies. As a matter of fact, many GMOs have lower yields than nonGMO crops. Did I mention that GMO crops have been linked to cancer and have numerous potential health risks?

Let’s look at the sordid history of both of these companies…

A Brief History of BAYER • Founded in Barmen, Germany in 1863 by Friedrich Bayer and his partner,

Johann Friedrich Weskott. • During World War 1, Bayer turned its attention to the manufacture of chemical weapons including chlorine gas. • In 1925, Bayer, BASF, and Hoechst merged to form the massive German conglomerate Interessengemeinschaft Farben (IG Farben) which was the single biggest donor to Hitler’s election campaign. • IG Farben built the concentration camps at Auschwitz to supply slave labor for the nearby IG Farben plant (also known as IG Auschwitz). Hitler eventually used these same camps in his megalomaniacal attempt to exterminate the Jewish race. • In 1941, Otto Armbrust, the IG Farben board member responsible for IG Farben’s Auschwitz project, told his colleagues, “our new friendship with the SS is a blessing. We have determined all measures integrating the concentration camps to benefit our company.” • A subsidiary of IG Farben manufactured and supplied Zyklon B to the SS. This poisonous cyanide-based pesticide, on which IG Farben held the patent, was used during the Holocaust to annihilate more than 1,000,000 people in the concentration/extermination camps. IG Farben also supplied the SS with the Methanol used to burn the corpses. • In 1946, the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal concluded that without IG Farben the Second World War would simply not have been possible. • At Nuremberg, Fritz ter Meer (an executive of IG Farben) was convicted of slavery, mass murder, and crimes against humanity. After serving 5 years in prison, he became Chairman of the Board at Bayer in 1956, a position which he held for almost a decade. • In 1962, just fifteen years after they were convicted in the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal, Bayer, BASF and Hoechst were again the architects of the next major human rights offence when they established the Codex Alimentarius Commission. • In the mid-1980s, Bayer was one of the companies which sold a product called Factor VIII concentrate to treat hemophilia. Factor VIII turned out to be infected with HIV. After learning that the product was contaminated, in order to save money, Bayer continued selling this infected product to Asia and Latin America even though a safe product was available. Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, who investigated the scandal, commented, “These are the most incriminating internal pharmaceutical industry documents I

have ever seen.” • In the 1990s, the federal government launched an investigation on Bayer’s unethical billing practices on Medicaid program and the Department of Justice found Bayer guilty of fraud. Bayer had to pay $14 Million to settle charges of causing inflated Medicaid claims. • Yaz (approved by FDA in 2006) and Yasmin (2001) were revolutionary birth control pills that use a synthetic hormone called drospirenone (DSP). Yaz or Yasmin have led to hundreds of deaths in young and healthy women. • The drug Trasylol was banned in 2006 after it contributed to thousands of deaths in patients every single month for over a decade. After a 2006 study showed widespread deaths associated with Trasylol, it took FDA and Bayer almost two years to take the drug off of the market. Later on it was revealed that Bayer had buried evidence of Trasylol’s severe side effects. • In 2008, the German Coalition against Bayer brought a charge against the Bayer Board of Management, with the public prosecutor in Freiburg accusing Bayer of contributing to the mass death of bees all over the world through its aggressive pesticide marketing. Since then, the bee debacle has only grown worse, with thousands of hives collapsing after poisoning by the pesticide clothianidin, producing a worldwide crisis. MONSANTO’S Poisonous Past

• Monsanto was founded in 1901 in St. Louis, Missouri, by John Francis Queeny, a 30-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry. Its first product was the artificial sweetener Saccharin, which Monsanto sold to the Coca-Cola Company. • In the 1920s, Monsanto Chemical Company was founded and incorporated the town of Monsanto, later renamed Sauget, Illinois. For years, the Monsanto plant in Sauget was the nation’s largest producer of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which were banned in the 1970s. PCBs are potent carcinogens and have been implicated in reproductive, developmental and immune system disorders. According to thousands of pages of released Monsanto documents (many of them emblazoned with warnings such as “CONFIDENTIAL: Read and Destroy”), they knew about the PCB dangers from early on, but decided to conceal what they knew. One Monsanto memo explains their justification: “We can’t afford to lose one dollar of business.” • During World War II, Monsanto played a significant role in the Manhattan Project to develop the atom bomb. • In 1944, Monsanto began manufacturing DDT, which was banned in 1972. • Following World War II, Monsanto championed the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture, and began manufacturing the herbicide 2,4,5-T, which

contains dioxin. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military initiated an herbicidal warfare program using Agent Orange (a mixture of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D and had very high concentrations of dioxin) as a defoliant. Monsanto and Dow Chemical were the two largest producers of Agent Orange, which has been linked to cancer and birth defects. According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000

tic River in Connecticut. • In the mid-1990s, Monsanto developed their controversial cattle drug, recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST), which is produced through a genetically engineered E. coli bacteria. • During the same time period, Monsanto was ranked 5th among U.S. corporations in EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory, having discharged 37 million pounds of toxic chemicals into the air, land, water and underground. Monsanto

deaths and disabilities, plus 500,000 children born with birth defects, leading to calls for Monsanto to be prosecuted for war crimes. Internal Monsanto memos show that Monsanto knew of the problems of dioxin contamination of Agent Orange when it sold it to the U.S. government for use in Vietnam. • In 1973, Monsanto developed and patented the glyphosate molecule and began manufacturing Roundup. In 2015, the World Health Organization declared glyphosate to be a probable carcinogen. Despite this fact, Roundup is still marketed as “safe.” • In 1982, Monsanto genetically modified a plant cell for the first time. • In the mid-1980s, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame’s clouded past, including a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it “might induce brain tumors.” The aspartame business became a separate Monsanto subsidiary, the NutraSweet Company. • In the late-1980s and early1990s, Monsanto spent almost $500,000 to defeat Proposition 65 (California’s anti-toxics initiative which prohibited the discharge of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects into drinking water supplies) and Proposition 128 (California’s pesticide regulation initiative that would have phased out Monsanto’s product alachlor, which is linked to cancer). During the same time period, Monsanto also conducted the first field tests of genetically engineered (GMO) crops. • In 1991, Monsanto was fined $1.2 million for trying to conceal discharge of contaminated waste water into the Mys-

was ordered to pay $41.1 million to a waste management company in Texas due to concerns over hazardous waste dumping. • In 1996, Monsanto introduced “Roundup Ready Soybeans” and “BT Cotton” then in 1998 “Roundup Ready Corn” was introduced. • By 2007, Monsanto’s GMO seeds accounted for over 90% of the world’s supply. • In 2010, former Monsanto lobbyist Michael R. Taylor was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety at the FDA (the fox is guarding the henhouse). • Since 2012, Monsanto has spent more than $25 million to fight state ballot initiatives to label GMOs and millions more to lobby Congress against mandatory GMO labeling. Thanks to this website for much of the above information.

Bayer Monsanto Union: A Dark and Dangerous Threat

The above bullet points about Bayer and Monsanto are merely the tip of the iceberg. I could have written an entire book detailing the unscrupulous activities that these companies have engaged in over the past century. But I think you get the point. This “hidden” history of Bayer and Monsanto indicates that both of these companies have consistently been involved with malevolent endeavors that wreaked havoc on humanity and caused sickness, pain, and death on a massive scale. These companies are like a cancer eating away at the physical fabric of our world. If these two companies join forces, the dark and dangerous synergy and malignant power will metastasize and be so great that, figuratively speaking, the universe might explode! To use a Lord of

the Rings analogy, it would be like Sauron acquiring the One Ring. Will this merger actually happen? It’s hard to say. Thankfully, there are anti-trust laws in place that will force the entire deal to undergo tremendous scrutiny and lengthy regulatory processes in the USA as well as the EU. “This merger is not a slam dunk,” said Diana Moss, president of the American Antitrust Institute. Also, a legal opinion written by two former Department of Justice officials (Antitrust Division) argues that the merger would violate the Clayton Act and would also be in direct violation of a 2008 court order. A Bayer-Monsanto merger certainly threatens the world food supply with domination by GMOs and destructive, carcinogenic agrochemicals. Thanks primarily to the anti-GMO and “Millions Against Monsanto” movements, the behemoth biotech bully is on the ropes. Perhaps Monsanto thinks that if it changes its name, that we will forget its poisonous past. Think again Monsanto. On October 14-16, Monsanto’s crimes against humanity will be exposed at the Monsanto Tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands. Remember, all it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. We must stick together and help educate our neighbors in order to continue the good fight together… for our children and every future generation to come. Perhaps it’s time to put Bayer and Big Pharma on trial as well and build an even bigger worldwide unified assembly. Maybe we could call it “Billions Against Big Pharma and Bayer-Monsanto.” Please share this important news story with friends and family and together let’s all take action to stop this merger. Ty Bollinger is a happily married husband, the father of four wonderful children, devoted Christian, best-selling author, medical researcher, talk radio host, health freedom advocate, former competitive bodybuilder and also a certified public accountant. After losing several family members to cancer (including his mother and father), Ty refused to accept the notion that chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery were the most effective treatments available for cancer patients. He began a quest to learn all he possibly could about alternative cancer treatments and the medical industry. Ty has now made it his life mission to share the most remarkable discovery he made on his quest: the vast majority of all diseases (including cancer) can be easily prevented and even cured without drugs or surgery.Ty speaks frequently to health groups, at seminars, expos, conferences, churches, and is a regular guest on multiple radio shows and writes for numerous magazines and websites. Speaking from personal experience and extensive research, Ty has touched the hearts and changed the lives of thousands of people around the world.

tered. They can very easily jump over the barriers and escape death, but a dolphin understands well the power of “one for all and all for one.” Some may say that this is weakness, which is why they are so easily killed. Surely humans are gods on earth who rule above and apart from all other crea-

the D r e

without destroying each other or earth’s natural systems. Our darkest human atrocities took root with the introduction of what we call civilization. Where has this understanding led us? With the continuous and growing poisoning of the world and subjugation of humans, it seems like an overstanding is now needed instead of understanding. To change our future we must take a wider angle and go beyond the layline to work from a place of complete intuitive comprehension of our relationship to each other. Overstanding means coming from a place that is above the ideologies most now consider to be the real world. This old understanding has all but made our planet a wasteland physically and spiritually. We don’t suggest going back to grass huts and running around naked. But we have the technology and the ability to communicate and create like never before. Instead of allowing and accepting being enslaved and poisoned, we could collectively decide to form our own future. You just might be the hundredth monkey. by Aaron Carvajal Human beings share a common trait with community centered animals like the dolphins, elephants, wolves, lions, monkeys and others. Many studies have shown how small numbers can influence large populations. Some question the Hundredth Monkey Effect, but other studies and simple observation show us the influence a small group can have on the whole of society. Many know this from the science of quantum entanglement or from original intuition. Many find it uncomfortable to accept that they indeed have an influence and thus a responsibility. It is much easier to blame someone or something else for the state of the planet and population. Trump or Hillary? Dolphins are considered to be the longest living intelligent creatures on Earth, having reigned for approximately 35 million years before humans beings entered the scene. Many believe they are far more intelligent than humans, pointing to an extra portion of their brain that is enlarged. It seems from many studies that although each dolphin is very much an individual with it’s unique personality, they ultimately do not differentiate themselves from their group pod. This is how they are so easily rounded up into a cove and slaugh-

tures. Our strength comes from individual power, brute force, and our competitive nature. Anyone who doesn’t believe this will get plowed over by the reality of the world. This default perception of reality is part of an obsolete script that has a horrific track record. The majority of what we learn from our history class is the war, racism, and chaos of past times. We are taught that our laws, civilization, and money are our only saviors from our violent natural instincts. It’s a dog eat dog world. This way of educating the future generation does not account for the thousand of years before we became sheep. How about the peoples of past who survived thousands of years

s millions of monarch butterflies begin their fall migration, this beautiful creature needs our help.

Add your name: Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the monarch butterfly by declaring it a threatened species.

Since 1990, monarch populations have crashed, with nearly 1 billion of the butterflies dying. 1

The decline isn’t due to natural causes. The Washington Post called it “nothing short of a massacre.”

How so? Pollutiondriven climate change is part of the problem. But we’re also allowing the destruction of the monarchs’ habitat through the rapid acceleration in use of Monsanto’s toxic Roundup and Roundup Ready crops.

We’re endangering the existence of one of our most beautiful creatures in order to serve the interests of one of the world’s most powerful corporations, and for what? So it can sell massive amounts of toxic

herbicides? No part of that makes sense.

As the monarchs begin their 3,000-mile fall migration, we need to make sure this migration isn’t their last.

That’s why we’re calling on the U.S. Fish and Wildl i f e Service to declare the monarch butterfly a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Will you add your n a m e?

Ye s , I ’ll sign the petition.

If we succeed, we’ll give the monarchs more than a fighting chance. When it comes to preventing extinction, the Endangered Species Act has a 99% success rate. But we have to act now.

Together, we will raise awareness of the monarchs’ plight and take action that can save them.

Thanks, as always, for making it all possible.

Yours,

Dan Jacobson

Katalina Hoehn The newest member of the ASEA family is Renu Advanced, a complete skin care system that repairs, rebuilds and restores your skin to its natural radiance. For a brief overview: http:// katalina.teamasea. com/newsite/products/renuadvanced. aspx. With over 20 years in the skin care industry, my focus has always been holistic, healing and repairing the skin with the healthiest, most effective ingredients possible. “Do no harm” has become my philosophy. The skin can regenerate and rebuild the way nature intended. With a society focused on the quick fix it wasn’t always easy to get my message across. Now however, individuals are understanding the benefits of caring for their skin with natural remedies. There is always a price to pay when you opt for the quick repairs such as botox, fillers and lasers. Why put toxins in your skin and remove your skins protective barrier when you now have a system that can repair your skin returning it to its youthful glow as well as tighten tone and firm. ASEA has taken the best of science and nature

to create RENU Advanced. Your cells provide the “fingerprint” for your natural beauty. Youthful cells renew much quicker than aging cells. Active cellular communication is key for renewal of healthy and beautiful skin. Without key

redox signaling molecules skin cells can’t communicate. This inter cellular communication is vital to recharging, repairing and restoring the skin naturally. The RENU Advanced system consist of Gentle Refining Cleanser, Ultra Replenishing Moisturizer, Intensive Redox Serum and the Renu 28 Revitalizing Redox Gel. The cleanser tones, balances the skin while supporting healthy cell renewal, the moisturizer enhances skin elasticity and firmness, reduces appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and protects the skin’s natural barrier while providing probiotics and oxygen to the skin. This works beautifully on all skin types.

I personally have never experienced a serum like Intensive Redox. It performs within minutes to eliminate fine lines, puffiness and wrinkles. One of the hardest areas to improve—the eye area— is dramatic, eliminating “crows feet” and dark circles. Hyper pigmentation often created by sun damage, and melasma are two of the more challenging conditions to correct, now repair is possible. Redox Serum will repair this damaged skin over time giving the cells what they need to restore healthy pigment to the skin. Renu 28 Revitalizing Face and Body gel can be used anywhere on your body you see signs of aging, sources of pain and discomfort giving your cells the repair tools necessary. The Flavors of Music

F

by Meghann Finn lavors of food and flavors of music parallel each other quite well. When I prepare my meals, I use a variety of spices because I enjoy spicy vegetarian food. I am aware, however, that this flavor may not agree with everyone’s taste. The same holds true for our taste for music. Why do we love music so much? A new study suggests it is because listening to music releases dopamine, the same chemical associated with food, drugs and sex. The results suggest why music, which has no obvious survival value, is so significant across human society. The study is from The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital — The Neuro at McGill University. It was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience. I hope that my local music highlights make you want to get out there and shake a leg. Dear Reader, Editor’s Note: A similar such letter was sent to one woman who would no longer read this magazine [due to one particular feature/article] in it, even though she had been a Reader for many years. This was the response sent to her [several minor changes]. This seemed like good info for everyone. As you may know, we (Pattie & Thom) have published Connection Magazine for 24 years. During that time, we have been front and center in both educating you about the many health challenges we face from toxic corporate products and empowering you to act effectively against the governmental policies that attempt to force these products on us. In the late ‘90’s, we joined with some of you to stop the state mandated fluoridation of our drinking water. Thus began a 2-year campaign, with Connection Magazine leading the charge to educate our community about how toxic fluoride was, how many worldclass scientists and 1st-world countries opposed it, and how this

Lively Letters

agenda to fluoridate was driven by a profit-hungry chemical industry that would otherwise have to pay to store this toxic waste product. This campaign and the subsequent successful initiative we mounted—to call for a public vote before any fluoridation began—is the reason no one in Santa Cruz County is drinking fluoridated water today! Hopefully, you’re also aware that Connection Magazine began educating about the dangers of GMO foods, in 1995, many years before there were any local, state, or national efforts to label GMO’s, and once these movements began, Connection Magazine was the only local publication to regularly support these efforts. Long before smart meters were installed on our homes, Connection Magazine regularly published articles about the health issues caused by exposure to the EMF radiation emitted by cell towers & cell phones. We were also the only media to keep you informed in the late ‘90’s about the small cadre of activists who actively lobbied both the city and county to create regulations for the siting of cell towers in order to keep them away from neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals. I want to also mention our many months of reporting on citizen efforts to stop the state-mandated aerial spraying to “eradicate” the

light brown apple moth in 2007. While many were sickened during the 2 days of low-flying airplanes spraying us with an untested, uncertified chemical, the mainstream media reported these injuries as the result of over-active imaginations, and even made fun of those injured. Not Connection Magazine, however, where these injuries were reported as legitimate, and the logical result of being exposed to poison. The quick growth of this movement to “Stop the Spray” ultimately led to its cancellation. When the EPA later denied this chemical certification, as it was unsafe to spray on people, you didn’t read that in the Sentinel, Good Times, or other local rag, but you did read about it in Connection Magazine. We’ve also been active for many years in informing readers about the dangers of vaccines. When opposition to SB277, the mandatory vaccine bill for children, began to build, which local media did their turn to in order to reach out to the larger community? That’s right: Connection Magazine where we continue to publish news of this movement. Finally, for those of you who welcome the reform of marijuana laws, I‘ll remind you that for over a decade now Connection Magazine has committed at least one page each month to ongoing education about the health benefits of can-

nabis, as well as informing readers about the continuing successes of the reform movement throughout the U.S. . We have received mixed reviews for our article on the Presidential candidates in our May Issue. In responding to the critical feedback, we can only point out that given our long history of reporting on the many health issues listed above, many of which are the direct result of policies created by our elected representatives, it is only logical that we would focus on what the candidates’ stances are on these issues. And, it takes quite a bit of “due diligence” to find out what some of these stances are, since they are not covered by the mainstream media, which finds no dangers in fluoridation, pesticide spraying of urban populations, GMO’s, mandatory vaccines, nor EMF radiation. We apologize if your disapproval of this one article has resulted in your no longer wanting to read Connection Magazine and the many other great issues we cover. True, LifeLong Learners (as so many of Connection Magazine readers are) are encouraged to read all you can, including this well-researched paper. We can’t please all the people, all the time. Hopefully, you can find it in your heart to give credit to Connection Magazine for consistently informing you about the many serious issues we face, as well as empowering you to act effectively to protect the health and well-being of yourself, your family, and your friends. 8 Reasons Why Californians Should Vote NO on Prop. 64 –

Written by dragonfly de la luz Length Severely Edited by Theodora Kerry (full article w/ links to initiative text @ https://voteknowprop64. blogspot.com/) roponents of Prop. 64 are saying the initiative would end the drug war, free up cops and courts to focus on true crime, and even let imprisoned pot POWs go free. But a deeper look reveals that Prop. 64 will not do what it claims. Using the text of the initiative itself, this article looks at some of the misconceptions about Prop. 64. 1) MYTH: PROP. 64 WILL BRING TAX REVENUE TO FUND SCHOOLS, HEALTH CARE, INFRASTRUCTURE FACT: NO TAX REVENUE WILL GO TO GENERAL FUND UNDER PROP. 64 Contrary to popular assumption, Prop. 64 states that NONE of the tax revenue from recreational cannabis will go to the General Fund. Instead, all tax revenue would go into the California Marijuana Tax Fund – an enormous slush fund designated solely to financing the massive bureaucracy that Prop. 64 would create. Not only does this create a system ripe for corruption and cronyism, since only Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, expected to head this recreational weed bureau, and his appointees would have the power to decide who receives those millions, but it is in stark contrast to what’s happening in other states that

P

The Adult Marijuana Use Act

have recreational cannabis. 2) MYTH: PROP. 64 LEGALIZES HOME GROWS FOR ALL FACT: FEW COULD LEGALLY GROW UNDER PROP. 64 Prop. 64 allows cities and counties to ban all but indoor cultivation. In fact, since 75 percent of local governments already have, or are considering bans, the majority of Californians will only have the option to grow indoors. While proponents claim the initiative will legalize home grows of six plants or less, what they neglect to mention is that the freedom to grow outdoors would apply only to residents of a few localities; that number is per residence, not per person; it would be legal only under highly restrictive conditions; and if you break the rules, you could go to jail for 6 months or prison up to 4 years. Practically speaking, having a home grow would be extremely difficult for most residents. And this is intentional: Since Prop. 64 was written not to decriminalize cannabis, but to legalize a recreational commercial cannabis industry, its goal is to get as many people as possible to buy cannabis. And the easiest way to do that is to make it nearly impossible for them to grow their own. 3) MYTH: PROP. 64 WILL PROTECT SMALL FARMERS FACT: PROP. 64 WILL DECI-

of

2016

FACT: PROP. 64 CREATES NEW CRIMES FOR TEENS/YOUNG ADULTS While California is making significant gains reducing cannabis arrests, Prop. 64 ironically creates new crimes that don’t exist today, and calls for jail time for a host of harmless offenses – including possessing more than an ounce (6 months in jail and/or a $500 fine). Even sharing any amount of cannabis would be a crime punishable by jail for teens and young adults aged 18-20 – even though it is not a crime today. Young people in this age group – which includes most college students – will face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for simply sharing a joint together. Adults 21 and over who pass a joint to another college-age adult under 21 face the same steep penalty. In both cases, if they have certain prior convictions, under Prop. 64 they could be sentenced to state prison time, not county jail, for two, three or four years. Currently, sharing any amount of cannabis under an ounce with other adults under 21 is a mere infraction in California, punishable by a $100 fine. If Prop. 64 passes, this activity would become a criminal offense, elevated to misdemeanor status statewide, thus making young offenders ineligible for federal student aid. 6) MYTH: PROP. 64 WILL BE IRREVOCABLE BY LEGISLATURE FACT: PROP. 64 LETS LEGISLATURE ALTER IT AT WILL Typically, voter initiatives cannot be amended except by another voter initiative—it’s the legal equivalent of “power to the people.” However, by giving legislators authority to change this initiative, Prop. 64 makes it a “power to the legislature” initiative, which can be changed at their whim, without voter approval or consent. 7) MYTH: PROP. 64 PROTECTS

Page 39

Page 38 ♥ Connection Magazine ♥ www.ConnectionMagz.com ♥ Facebook.com/ConnectionOnline ♥ October 2016

MATE SMALL FARMERS While Prop. 64 claims that it “protects small farmers” by including “anti-monopoly provisions”, this only applies to the first 5 years of legalization. After that time, millionaire Weedmaps founder Justin Hartfield – the second largest investor in Prop. 64 after Sean Parker – intends to turn the current farm-to-table cannabis model into Big Tobacco. The mom-and-pop cultivators that have been the backbone of the industry for generations would be priced out of competition in short order. Hezekiah Allen, a Humboldtbased spokesperson for the California Growers Association, believes this could “result in a catastrophic economic collapse for huge swathes of California.” Small farmers will barely have enough time to build a brand before the mega-grows with unlimited plant numbers overtake the industry and undercut them out of existence. This is a corporate cannabis coup. 4) MYTH: PROP. 64 IS NECESSARY TO REDUCE DRUG ARRESTS FACT: PROP. 47 HAS ALREADY MADE PROP. 64 OBSOLETE Thanks to Prop. 47, passed in 2014, simple possession of almost all drugs has been reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. As a result, California is drastically reducing drug arrests and the prison population across the state. In Los Angeles, home to the nation’s largest jail system, drug arrests fell one-third in just the first year of its passage. Nearly 10,000 inmates will be eligible for resentencing, and “more than 4,300 state prisoners have already been resentenced and then released.” And felony cannabis arrests dropped a full one-third last year, which NORML says is credited to Prop. 47. 5) MYTH: PROP. 64 CREATES NO NEW CRIMES

8 Reasons Why Californians Should Vote NO on Prop. 64 –

The Adult Marijuana Use Act Page 38

PATIENTS’ RIGHTS FACT: PROP. 64 LETS LOCALITIES DECIDE MMJ PATIENTS’ RIGHTS Today, some 2 million patients enjoy the right to grow as much cannabis as they require – literally an unlimited amount, as upheld by the Supreme Court in the People v. Kelly ruling—for any condition “for which marijuana provides relief.” And under California law as it is written today, anyone can become a patient, and no one has to lie to do it. Under Prop. 64, however, “unlimited” would drop to six (6) plants, which is nowhere near enough to treat many of the most serious ailments. The initiative would further limit patients’ access by actually making it more difficult to get a doctor’s recommendation. Whereas under current law, a patient needs nothing more than an oral or written recommendation to obtain and grow cannabis, under Prop. 64, patients would be required to pay up to $100 annually for an ID card that currently is not required by law [Section 11362.755 (b)]. Surprisingly, for more proof that Prop. 64 will impact medical cannabis, one need look no farther than page one of the initiative, where in Section 2B it is written in black and white: Prop. 64 “will consolidate and streamline regulation and taxation for both nonmedical and medical marijuana.” If you think that merging the two systems would have no negative impact on patients, we now have a clear example of what would happen under a consolidated market. It comes from Washington State. 8) MYTH: WHAT HAPPENED IN WASHINGTON WON’T HAPPEN HERE FACT: PROP. 64 COULD END MEDICAL CANNABIS INDUSTRY AS WE KNOW IT As of July 1 in Washington state, all medical dispensaries have been shuttered, and patients must now buy their medicine from recreational outlets at a bank-breaking 46 percent tax increase, on top of the overall higher price of recreational cannabis. During the state’s campaign for recreational cannabis in 2012, patients were told by proponents of Initiative 502 that Washington’s medical cannabis program would be left intact. But the initiative contained a rare provision that allows legislators to alter it at their whim. Just six months after the first recreational pot shop opened, the legislature introduced a measure to end the state’s 15 year old MMJ program, close all medical

of

2016

dispensaries and drastically limit how much patients could grow and possess, in a deliberate move to force patients into the heavily-taxed recreational system. This is destined to be repeated in California because Prop. 64 will replace, repeal and supersede Prop. 215. It is important to note that Prop. 215 is a voter initiative. And under state law, there is only one way a voter initiative can be changed, and that is with another voter initiative. Since Prop. 64 is also a voter initiative, and purports to regulate and tax “both nonmedical and medical marijuana” (Section 2B), Prop. 64 will unquestionably repeal Prop. 215. L i k e Wa s h i n g ton’s initiative, it also gives the legislature the same power to alter the initiative. In Washington, lawmakers decided to use that power to increase tax revenue by nixing the MMJ program. In California, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom has similar plans. In a recent interview with Mother Jones, Newsom makes clear not only his expectation that the two markets will become one, but that the reasons for this are entirely based on increasing potential tax revenue.

CONCLUSION

Above all, the goal of any recreational initiative should be to simply stop arresting people for cannabis— which California has already achieved to great success. We don’t need another initiative to ‘grant’ us rights we already have. Is ending prohibition necessarily dependent upon implementing a massive, unwieldy corporate cartel and regulatory scheme, when California has already relaxed its pot laws to the point of virtual non-existence? Dragonfly de la Luz, renowned ganja critic, is one of the earliest cannabis journalists. An activist for the liberation of cannabis her entire adult life, Dragonfly actively supports thoughtful, progressive legalization measures and actively opposes those that would corporatize cannabis for the benefit of the few. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Education on Medical Marijuana, the Journal for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), and many others. Her full article contains several more reasons to vote NO on Prop. 64, each with links to the initiative text and supporting opinions. For the sake of all those, especially patients, who choose marijuana over the state-sanctioned toxic options, please read it @ https:// voteknowprop64.blogspot.com/). The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 24. Don’t miss it!!!
