You will also see in this issue a new feature for family announcements, congratulations and birthday messages. If you would like to contribute to this in a future issue, see the details on page 3. We also bring you news from sports and schools in the area, well done to GCSE and A Level students who received their grades during the holiday. On page 9 you can see the results of the Community Garden Competition and congratulations to the winner of the Meadowhall vouchers. There is also a new section for a local “Business in Focus”. We have many successful businesses in the area and this

month we feature Oakapple Designs Ltd - if you would like your business or venture to be a future Business in Focus, just give us a call or email julie@kpwcdt.co.uk. We also have to say a very sad goodbye to “Our History” section of the newsletter. John Tanner, Project Manager, will close the doors to the History Project at the end of November and no doubt you will read more on page 13. If you have any messages for John about his time spent on the History Project then please let us have them and we will print them in the next issue. Call us on 01909 773348 or email julie@kpwcdt.co.uk. It’s now time to sit back, relax and enjoy Issue 18. The photo on the front cover was taken overlooking the regenerated Kiveton Colliery Site. It shows John Tanner displaying his grandad’s lamp presented on his retirement and we managed to keep the cover a surprise from John until publication!

n the last weeks of the summer holidays you might have noticed dozens of local youngsters playing sport and taking part in exciting activities such as StreetDance up on the Recreation Ground. This was just the first part of a major sports programme which is taking place throughout the year, organised by the Development Trust working closely with ActiveRegen South Yorkshire. The programme will provide sports activities through all the summer holidays but also much more. There will be an after-schools club (at all the local schools), evening sessions and lots of other activities. The sports programme includes coaching

training and FA qualifications for young adults. All this is great for young people, who have been giving us excellent feedback, as it improves their health, gives them something to do in the holidays and evenings and allows them to develop new skills and confidence. On behalf of everyone in Kiveton Park and Wales, the Development Trust would like to thank those who have provided the funding for the sports programme: National Lottery Awards for All, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, Local Network Fund and the Trusthouse Foundation.

awarded us a grant which will contribute towards the replacement of the football posts down at the Old Colliery Offices. Brand new posts will be appearing in a few weeks, thanks to the Football Foundation, a grant provided by Wales Parish Council and money raised by the Development Trust.

Redroad Music

S

pectacular growth in performing and media arts has the potential to offer a new set of tools for young people’s development. However, it requires special efforts to create appropriate access models for young people. Redroad Music work alongside young people’s centres and projects as well other partner organisations to help meet the needs of young people in Rotherham. This summer has been a busy time for Redroad, we have worked with partners to offer a variety of stimulating projects that have benefited young people.

Redroad FM, the community

radio station for South Rotherham is aiming to be on FM radio from Monday 15th October to Sunday 11th November 2007. It is radio that everyone can get involved in to have their say, broadcast local information and even do your own radio show! The last radio broadcast was in March and involved young people from local schools, colleges and youth centres, the local history group and forestry commission, an enterprise show, children’s stories and music including local live bands and DJ’s, reggae, soul and jazz amongst other varied programmes. An exciting element to Redroad FM is the range of parent and child shows, that were really popular!

Already youth centres across the South Area are getting involved with Radio plays as part of Self Confidence Through Drama accreditation on the theme of drinking, Harthill Youth Centre is looking to air their views as part of a youth forum. Dinnington Youth Centre are creating a jingle to publicise their Youth Café. Kiveton Park have had the idea of creating an on-going radio play to rival ‘The Archers’ but based around the exciting characters that live in the local area! Aston Youth Centre is looking to broadcast interviews about Local Democracy Week (15th – 21st October). Other community groups and individuals are getting involved too. No experience is necessary.

Redroad Drama and Dance

Finally, Vicky Storey our drama and dance tutor played Dr Larousse (our loving grandma Marie-Albertine) in the Cast Offs Youth Theatre production Snowflake. Vicky also co-directed the play and gave support to staff and young people involved with the performance.

Vicky has been with Redroad since the beginning of last summer and chose to spend her gap year with us. She is now returning back to further study at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama to undertake a Masters in Applied Drama. I am sure if anyone has met Vicky, they will know she will be missed by staff, young people and many others in our local area. On a positive note though, we send our best regards to Vicky and wish her success in her studies and future career.

Redroad Youth Band t Developmen

If you would like to get in touch with the station with your ideas please call 01909 771754 or email kirsty.veitch-sorsby@rotherham.gov.uk. Redroad FM has applied to OFCOM for a full time 5 year licence! They will find out if the licence has been granted during September . This project is supported by the Rural Target Fund of the Objective 1 Programme for South Yorkshire. Part-financed by the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund of the European Union and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Yorkshire Rural Community Council manages the Rural Target Fund.

Going On what’s Community Garden Over 120 children entered our garden competition in June and, as you might expect, we had some amazing designs and really interesting ideas from Kiveton Park and Wales school children. We don’t think we’ll be able to put crocodiles in the garden, as one adventurous designer planned, but we do have some great ideas from young people that we will incorporate. It was very difficult to choose just one winner so we decided to give 4 runner-up prizes: 1st prize £20 Meadowhall voucher Rebecca Longstaff Age 7 Chocolates go to: Alana Smith Age 5 Emre Buyukmizmilli Age 6 Anthony Percy Age 8 Jasmine Revitt Age 6 There has also been a great response from the grown ups in terms of the orders for dedicated bricks. Over seventy people

have already ordered bricks to be dedicated to family or friends. Some of the pavement bricks will form a pathway through the garden to a gazebo. The bottom half of the gazebo will be built with dedicated bricks, forming a lasting memorial. Although a large number of dedications are for miners who are no longer with us, there are also lots of bricks ordered for people who are getting married, having a special birthday, passed an important exam etc. Order forms will be sent in October to all those that have expressed an interest so that they can choose the exact wording for their paver or brick. We are still taking orders so if you would like a dedicated brick, please let us know. Many thanks to all who have offered to help on the project and as soon as arrangements are made we will contact you in due course. If you would still like to offer your services, or make an order, please contact us on 01909 773348.

I hope you’ll agree that our volunteers have achieved a great deal. During the course of the last year they’ve: created the website and CD-Roms you can see below; put together a special archive collection of 350 documents and 2,000 photographs; recorded more than 100 hours of interviews; broadcast the ‘History Show’; been visited by more than 350 school children who have learnt about the pits; turned the pit offices into a heritage museum for a week; created a travelling collection of objects

and memorabilia; written and republished more than twenty books about different aspects of this area’s history; and finally, but certainly not least, local historians have really got the History Society up and running.

I’d like to pass my personal thanks to all who have been involved in the History Project, and to everyone at the Pit Offices and in the village who have been so supportive. It’s been a real privilege to work here, we’ve had some great experiences and I look forward to seeing you soon!

KivetonWalesHistory on CD-Rom

www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk

We’re creating a CD-Rom version of KivetonWalesHistory, 250 copies of which will be distributed around the village (free of charge).

Towards the start of this project we launched www.kivetonparkandwaleshistoryproject.org.uk to give people an idea about what we’re doing. You can still visit this site but remember that it’s only a sample!

Many will go to local schools, the youth centre and library, but we also have 125 CD-Roms to distribute to the community. The CD-Rom gives you access to most parts of KivetonWalesHistory without having to go on the internet. If you’d like a free KivetonWalesHistory CD-Rom call 01909 773348. If over subscribed, priority will be given to those without internet access, with dial-up or low-speed internet access or who can’t easily get to the library, where our website and www.ancestry.co.uk can now be explored free of charge.

We originally planned to update that site as the year went on but decided instead to create a brand new website behind the scenes. This is now taking shape at www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk, but you won’t be able to access the site until December. This new site includes: History Galleries Photo Archives People’s Museum Project Photos Oral History Archive Documentaries Downloadable Books and Pamphlets Family Histories History Forum History Society News and Events

The Kiveton Park and Wales Collection at Rotherham Borough Archives We‘ve assembled a very large collection of documents, maps and photographs about the history of Kiveton Park and Wales. Some of these have been rescued from garages, lofts, cellars, dustbins and skips. We’re now ready to pass these to Rotherham Archives, where they will be kept under the best conditions in a special collection, as Principal Archivist Sarah Wickham explains:

“Ever since 1880 Rotherham Borough Archives and Local Studies have ensured the continuing preservation of unique and irreplaceable material for the future. We collect, preserve and provide access to documents covering all aspects of life within the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. We can help you to trace your family history, discover the history of your village or house, find out how your local area looked in the past and much more... We now look after around 3km worth of items, with the oldest document dating from 1293 and the most recent from 2007! As well as safeguarding these items for the future, we make sure that people from across the Borough - and also across the world! - are able to use them for their research. Depositing documents with the service has a number of advantages for the

14

depositor. First, the knowledge the items will be used and treasured by people interested in the stories that they tell, and will be shared with others (of course, if the contents are sensitive they may be “closed” at the depositor’s request for a period of time to protect living people). Also, the confidence that precious items will be stored in specially controlled and secure conditions to prevent deterioration and ensure that they last into the future. More information may be obtained by telephoning 01709 823 616 or accessing our webpages at http://www. rotherham.gov.uk/graphics/Learning/ Archives/. Remember, if you don’t have email or internet access at home it’s available free in Kiveton Park Community Library.” Sarah Wickham, Principal Officer Rotherham Borough Archives and Local Studies
