has been making up for lost time and since my last up-date we have been doing some “day trips” to other branches in the deanery. It was lovely to see friends whom we have not able to see, over the last 2 years.

In March we welcomed Kathryn Bliss, who has produced a cookery book to help people on low incomes. This cookery book will be very useful to all in these tough times.

In April it was our branch’s turn to run the MU coffee morning at Sheffield Cathedral. This is always the first Friday of the month at 10am till noon. All welcome to go along for coffee and a scone.

In April we went to Ryecroft MU for a Pie and Pea lunch and in July we went to Bramley MU for a Cream Tea. Both of these events raised money for an MU charity that sends families away for a holiday. We celebrated the Platinum Jubilee, by hosting on a cream scone event, after the morning service.

Music Tots and we have welcomed many new members to the group. We meet on Thursday mornings between 10 am and 11am at St Johns Rooms. Come along for a sing song.

Although there is no meeting in August and in September we are visiting Winthorpe Gardens at Wickersley. Our next meeting with a guest speaker is Wednesday 11th October at 10:45, all are welcome to come at St Johns Church, Wales and meet the group.

Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club

Are so happy to announce that their brand new training area is now finally open!

The Kiveton Park Miners Welfare scheme received £29,994 from Viridor Credits and the Landfill Communities Fund - to replace the previous net area at KPCCC. Our practice area had become unsafe to use and was beyond repair.

KPCCC official, Richard Grainger, is delighted with the new facility. He writes, ‘We highlighted the practice area as one of the key areas of improvement for during the winter of 2021 and it is a massive boost for the club to finally have such a great new facility that will mean all of our members will be able to practice safely and continue to develop their game. We hope this new facility, alongside other significant club developments, will attract new players of all ages to KPCCC’

KPCCC would like to thank the guys at Durant Cricket for a great job with the new practice area installation.

It is with great sadness that we recently learned of the passing of Redroad radios Trevor Grosset. Trevor was a former Trustee of the Community Development trust and a familiar face around the Old Colliery Offices when Redroad was based there. Trevor was a huge personality with an infectious laugh and who was dedicated to his community work. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Kiveton infants sports day

Everyone was extremely positive about the venue and the three sports day events that we held at the Kiveton Community sports park were very successful. It was very generous of the community development trust to allow us to use the space, and we were all very grateful. You couldn’t have been more accommodating or looked after us better.

Our sports coach commented that the space was perfect and that the facilities were so much better than those we have at school where the grass is extremely uneven, space is limited and there is no spectator area..

“Best sports day ever”

Parents were positive and clearly impressed. There were lots of comments such as ‘wow it’s great in here’ ‘look at the space!’ More than one said that it had been the best sports day they had ever attended, and some said that it would be great for the school to have more access to the pitch. Many commented how good it was of you to give us use of the pitch.

“It felt like the Olympics”

The children also had a great time. One said that he had always wanted to go in the pitch but never been allowed. Others said that it was

easy to run on and they didn’t trip up (the school field is full of holes and bumps.) One child said that it felt like being at the Olympics. Lots of children asked if they could go again.

We have one child in a wheelchair. The look on her face as she competed said it all. Her wheelchair can’t be safely pushed on the grass at school as it is so uneven. Up until visiting your site, she has only ever done the throwing events. On the 4G surface she competed in every race. It was very special for both her and her family.

Summer Update

During the summer months we have been busy supporting the numerous events taking place in the area. We attended the brilliant Jubilee Celebration events organised by Wales parish Council in June and attended the Carnival organised by Wales High School in July. It’s brilliant to see the community come together in this way and we were glad to be taking party.

We have been busy supporting local groups and initiatives as we do every year through our community grants fund. We have given a substantial amount of funding to Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club this year to assist them in making improvements to their pavilion and wider facilities. We are supportive of the Clubs’ ongoing work to improve the facilities and encourage greater participation

We have also funded the following groups with their activity over the past year or so: Kiveton Park Meadows Primary, Wales Parish Bowling Club, Kiveton Park Football Club, Wales Community Panto Players and Kiveton Park and Wales Community Development Trust.

We are always on the lookout for local community groups that we haven’t funded before or haven’t for a while. Please get in touch if you are one and we will see what we can do support you this year.

Don’t forget our drop-in advice surgeries 1st and 2nd Saturday of every month in Kiveton Park Library 10am11am.

With 40 walks of varying lenght and thought to be the largest canal focusd walking festival in the country, the fourth Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival will run from 10th to 18th September.

You can find everything on the Trust’s website – just search for Chesterfield Canal Trust. The walks must be booked in advance either online or by ringing 01246 477569. All are free except those that involve a boat trip.

46 mile long canal has parts that are as attractive as any in the country. This extensive programme covers many popular areas. Some walks will take you through lovely countryside, others have special interest such as architecture and steam trains; one includes a visit to a football stadium. Most of the walks end near a café or a pub. Most are easily accessible by public transport.

No Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival would be complete without the very popular Boats & Boots that combine a walk with a ride on one of the Trust’s trip boats.

The Trust is very grateful to the walk leaders and those who assist them, representing many different groups

Kiveton Community Woodland

Kiveton Community Woodland is a large park which sits between Kiveton and Harthill. Fifty-seven hectares of mixed woodland, grassland, ponds and streams, regenerated from the former industrial landscape of Kiveton Park Colliery.

The community woodland is a valuable home for wildlife and a wonderful resource for all of us who live in this area.

A lot of the work required for the day to day running of the community woodland is carried out by volunteers. They work tirelessly, week in, week out, fuelled by a passion for keeping fit, helping nature, learning new skills… and eating a lot of biscuits. Volunteers are essential to sites like ours and in recognition of their huge importance.

The Land Trust gives out an annual national Volunteer of The Year award. This year’s award

goes to our very own Jack Windle! Jack was studying horticulture and countryside management at Dearne Valley College and wanted to get some practical hands-on work experience, so he started volunteering, not only at Kiveton Woodland, but also at nearby Dinnington Community Woodland too.

Since volunteering, he has really flourished. Growing in confidence, developing his skills in countryside management, and forging new friendships with his fellow volunteers.

Jack stands out because of his enthusiasm, incredible work ethic and positive impact on all those people who have worked with him. When asked what he would say to anyone thinking about giving

and organisations, for devising checking and leading the walks. It extends especial thanks to its sponsors - Harworth Group, Canal & River Trust, Derbyshire Grants Programme, The Parish Councils of Eckington and also West Stockwith

volunteering a go, his advice is simple:

“Do it. It’s one of the best things I ever did.”

Congratulations, Jack!

Jubilee Celebrations

Street parties could be described as having been a British institution, being a perfect way to celebrate major national occasions for more than a century. The end of wars, coronations, royal weddings and jubilees have all been leapt on as excuses to get out the trestle tables and paper cups.

On 6th February this year Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

These events echo down the decades, revealing not only just how much we have changed, but also how the simple desire to celebrate with neighbours in the middle of a street (or recreation field) remains the same, so to celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, as events took place throughout the entire country, here in Kiveton Park and Wales we held our Family Fun Day over this special Bank Holiday weekend in June.

Unfortunately (as befits every bank holiday event, or so it seems), the weather wasn’t quite as nice as hoped, but that certainly didn’t stop the Parish Council putting on a “nice do” in commemoration of “Her Maj”, and ensuring that bunting, flags and Jubilee plaques were placed around the Rec and through the village, which added to the street party vibe.

8
Wales Parish Council 01909 515784 office@wales-pc.org.uk

It was wonderful to see all the effort put in by all the local primary and infant children, in to creating unique Royal Red White and Blue bunting which was hung in the event marquees.

Within the performing marquee, compere Ashley Booker introduced Wales Community Theatre Players, giving a sneaky peek at their show “Honk”, which was lined up to be performed just a few weeks’ later in the High School. Along with the great WCTP there was fab local group Liquid Dance Academy who performed street dance, and from further afield (both in distance travelled, and in era!), The DreamBelles and Blitz Dancers, performed some brilliant 50’s song and dance, and out on the Recreation Field, there were also some vibrantly traditional performances from the Lord Conyers Morris Men. Within the traders marquee it was fantastic to see so many local businesses selling cakes, clothes, sweets and gifts. Also outside on the Rec, we had a fantastic Punch and Judy Show, the unique “Big Bubble Man”, traditional Fair Ground, epic Climbing Wall and Slide, and the mechanical surf board, plus South Yorkshire Fire

Service. I’m sure you’ll agree all were absolute hits for young and old throughout the day. RedRoadFM saw us through until the grand finale from “Gold Gin” Rock Band, who put on a great show for us, at the end of this truly packed day, and really gave everyone a fantastic show. Massive thanks and appreciation must go out to both Gullivers Valley, and GreenCore (especially Heather) who all helped out throughout the day, and also donated prizes for the Art Competition. Also big thanks to the Village Hall for allowing us to hold the Art Competition in there, also to Alexander Stafford, Dominic Beck and Marnie Harvard for judging the competition entries, and of course HUGE thanks to all those children who participated in the competition! There really were some amazing art works on display.

One final great big thank you to all the volunteers and Green Spaces Team who stayed behind afterwards and helped litter-pick. It really does show how well the community works and pulls together for a national celebration… and then of course we’re all looking forward to the next event, which is the Bonfire on the 4th November, we hope to see you all there!

Dear Friends

One of the things we do regularly as your local Church is to pray every day for the people who live and work within the Parish boundaries. We also pray for the local organizations, schools and businesses as well. It is something we’ve had in place for many years.

The church is a community within a community. It belongs to everyone and is open daily for you. It is your church, a house of prayer where people come in all the seasons of living, christenings, weddings and renewal of vows are celebrated and a sacred space where tears are shed in the saying of farewells.

We also gather as community in the seasons of the church year Remembrance, Christmas and Easter, to name a few. It is always pleasing to see the church full of children, staff and parents/grand parents for a School assembly or Family Service.

SAXON GOLF SOCIETY

Getting out on the golf course is a pleasure in the summer, but, whilst the greens are still "green", the fairways are now brown, and in some cases like straw! At least the tee shots travel that extra distance due to the hard surface but you almost need a hammer to peg the tee into the ground!

The traditional opening of the season in March brought the popular team game of "Texas Scramble", and there were "birdies a plenty" from each four ball. This was followed by The Ryder Cup in May fought out between the oldies and the youngsters, contested through 36 holes over two days at Erewash and Mapperley Golf Club. It resulted in a long-awaited return to victory for the oldies after five years of being the underdogs. Captains of the two teams can

I’m sure we were all shocked at fires which occurred on the hottest day ever recorded. When suddenly a fire began on the fields next to Lambrell Avenue.

The way members of the community came together that day to try to help extinguish the blazes was absolutely amazing! And the community forums were full of help for anyone who might be affected.

The fortitude, resilience and humility of those who lost their homes and many memories has been an inspiration to us all and our thoughts and prayers remain with them as they rebuild their lives from the ashes. One of those affected said,

‘People have been so good to us. I can’t tell you how great people in the community have been. We just can’t thank everybody enough.’

The months to come are going to be difficult with the cost of living crisis. Our local food banks will play an important role in helping

be seen in the photo with Derek White holding the ‘Winners’ trophy for the oldies, and Kevin Newton wearing the obligatory ‘Losers’ shirt with wooden spoon in hand representing the "young lads".

Our annual weekend away in June took us to the quality venue of the Forest of Arden (which previously hosted the British Masters) and the daunting 18th hole par 3 over a large lake was a fitting end to play to the crowd sitting outside the 19th hole. The overall winner for the Gold Coast Cup was Tim Brookes, who has now made it a hat trick of wins – Well done Tim.

The Charity Day competition is at Rother Valley in August and then Captain's Day is at Renishaw in September. Our 23rd year of fundraising is well under way, the chosen benefactor this year being linked to Prostate Cancer. Thank you to those Clubs who have kindly given a prize to auction

the vulnerable so please do support them and to keep an eye out for your neighbours when the darker nights and the cold days come.

WALES KIVETON METHODIST CHURCH

Hopefully the lovely long sunny days of summer have brought a good feeling to your general well-being, and given a lift to your spirits. By bringing ourselves closer to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit our lives can be enriched further, whatever the season and weather. Prayer is an important part of the Christian way of life; take the hymn "What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer". Why not go onto ‘You Tube’ or ask ‘Alexa’ to play it for you and listen closely to the words.

Music and singing is something that is universally enjoyed, whether it is in church, on the radio, via download, or at a stage performance. With reference to the latter, our connection with the Wales Community Theatre Players has involved them rehearsing for many weeks at Wales Chapel for their summer performance of "Honk!"The Ugly Duckling Musical. This was

performed at Wales High School in July, and what a performance it was; absolutely brilliant! It had everythinggreat vocals, great acting, and superb lines that brought many laughs. Congratulations to the cast and all those involved with the production, musical arrangements and everyone who worked behind the scenes. Do be sure to see their next one – a pantomime production of Aladdin at the Montgomery Hall in Sheffield, Friday 13th to Saturday 21st January.

Telephone the box office 0114 327 3456, www.walesctp.comOur close

liaison with our ecumenical friends at the local churches nearby has continued with monthly gatherings on a Thursday evening. We will also be united for our Songs of Praise service at Wales Kiveton Methodist Church on Sunday 25th September at 3pm. Do come and share in our sing-along together followed by a tasty hot dog or burger!

If you enjoy singing and meeting a friendly bunch of people then you are welcome to join us in our fortnightly Sunday services at 3pm. You can be assured of a warm welcome.

It’s been 16 long years since a KPFC senior team won a cup, but our Over 35s set that record straight with victory in their Wragg League Trophy final beating Oughtibridge War Memorial 3-1.

Our newly-formed veterans team also had an excellent season and achieved promotion from Division Two.

The good news continued to roll as the women’s first team have been sitting pretty in the Division 2 promotion places most of the season confirmed promotion with a couple of games to go.

They have done us all proud and we can’t wait to see them in Division 1 next season.

After nine long months, the football season came to a close and we hosted our annual junior tournament at Wales High School in May.

64 teams from all over Yorkshire and the Midlands converged on Kiveton for the football extravaganza, and we saw some fantastic football from boys and girls ranging from the U7s to U11s

The KPFC U8s girls, reached the final of their competition and were awarded a set of medals for their efforts after winning a tense penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals!

The overwhelming majority of feedback received has been positive. Behind the scenes, we had a whole army of volunteers marshalling the car parks, tending the cafe, serving

Due to the great weather we have completed all scheduled games which must be a first !!.

Our 2 BDCL teams in div,s 2 and 3 are both chasing promotion.

Our Mansfield Premier league team is finding results hard to find but when you consider many teams in this league have professionals they are giving a good account of themselves and are in mid-table following the win against table toppers Farnsfield.

Our 4th team are mid table in the Iqbal Sunday league.

In speaking of their performance, Mr. Martial Ross, a drama lecturer at Bretton Hall Training College, commended their choice of play, the strong, well chosen cast and the realistic, well timed sound effects.

He especially praised the scene where the farming family of Weatherheads had supper, Sybil Pilgram particularly giving an outstanding performance as the shrewdish, garrulous, Emma Weatherhead.

The group finished second, a gratifying result. All the scenery was made by members and other members gave valuable help behind the scenes. These were : Gladys Bates, Stephanie Bidwell, Ann Hall, Sheila Harker, Hetty Jenkins, Kathleen and Graham Rose and Annice Sayles.

For this gratifying result, much credit may be given to the enthusiastic producer, who will again take the Drama Class when it re-opens at Kiveton Park Junior School in September.
