A splash of Colour to brighten up any day I am sure many of you will have seen the wonderful wild flower bed that was created on Hard lane between Kiveton & Harthill. A splash of colour to brighten up any day, which is why we have included it in this our autumn winter edition when things might need a little brightening up. The planting of the bed was part of an initiatve by the borough council to enhance Rotherhams environment.

The verges will be mowed later in the autumn when all the seed heads have

Meet our local Bobby ! Hi, I'm PC Williams and I'm your local neighbourhood officer. The areas I cover are Kiveton Park, Wales, Todwick, Woodhall, Harthill and Thorpe Salvin. You may have seen me driving through the area or even (when weather permits) being a 'Bobby on the Beat'. I've been covering these areas since December 2020 and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting the residents and getting stuck in to the issues that concern you. Unfortunately I can't be everywhere at once so if you have any information you would like to pass on regarding crime in the area please send it anonymously through to www.crimestoppers-uk.org.uk. If you just want to meet up for a chat or want to discuss issues that concern you please drop me an email to Felicity.Williams0265@southyorks.pnn.police.uk alternatively just say 'Hi'. Tuesday October the 5th finally saw the relaunch of the hugely popular lunch group at the Old Colliery Offices. The lunches had been running for four years before they had to be abruptly stopped on the 17th March last year due to the onset of the pandemic, . However with the introduction of the vaccine, the removal of all restrictions and much planning the lunches have now been able to re-commence, much to the delight of the attendees. Letters were sent out to previous members in early September resulting in the phone line being very busy with people putting their names down once more for a lovely two course hot lunch, lovingly prepared on the premises on the day by our wonderful cook Linda who we have managed to retain. All aided by our equally wonderful group of volunteers. Also not forgetting meeting up with old friends for a natter. Long may it now continue ! Donation of £100 from the Wales & Kiveton Neighbourhood watch

People in our community still need the help and support of our local foodbank. Unfortuately our stocks of basic items such as tinned beans, tinned vegetables, tea bags, breakfast cereals, jars of pasta sauce, butter or margarine, shampoos, conditioner, shower gel, ladies deodorant and washing up liquid are all dwindling fast. We have had some very generous donations recently, not only from our collection point, at Mcolls and the One Stop but also very generous individuals bringing an array of items in. Carole Witherington at the Twice as Nice shop made another generous donation. Pictured below are the donations from Jess Myers of the Wales & Kiveton Park Neighbourhood Watch, from collections taken during the Halloween and Easter egg hunts, Kiveton Meadows juniors harvest festival & the Kiveton & Wales Methodists Harvest festival all of which will greatly help to replenish our stocks.

The fabulous donation made by Kiveton Meadows Juniors School, a big thank you to the school, the children and all the parents.

Volunteers at the food bank pictured with the wonderful donation from the Kiveton & Wales Methodists Harvest festival.

Donations are always welcome. Therefore if any one can help us out we and our food bank users would be very grateful. Items can be placed in our collection baskets in McColls and the One Stop shop or direct into the foodbank at the Old Colliery Offices.

How to avoid spreading the flu

More people are likely to get flu this winter as fewer people will have built up natural immunity to it during the COVID-19 pandemic

Flu is very infectious and easily spread to other people. You're more likely to give it to others in the first 5 days. Flu is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.

Check if you have flu Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include: A sudden high temperature of 38C or above An aching body Feeling tired or exhausted A dry cough A sore throat A headache Difficulty sleeping Loss of appetite Diarrhoea or tummy pain Feeling sick and being sick

The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active.

How to treat flu yourself, Rest, sleep & Keep warm Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration (your pee should be light yellow or clear)

Antibiotics

A pharmacist can help with flu A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies. Be careful not to use flu remedies if you're taking paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets as it's easy to take more than the recommended dose.

GPs do not recommend antibiotics for flu because they will not relieve your symptoms or speed up your recovery.

The 2021 season has drawn to a close with Covid -19 again playing its part in the disruption of cricket along with the usual British weather. Except for a few games lost to the above Waleswood managed to get through the season with all 4 teams completing their fixtures were possible along with a mid-week team. The 2 Saturday Bassetlaw league teams had a mixed season result wise. The 2 Sunday teams both finished as runners up in their respective leagues. Volunteers have spent many hours keeping the facilities / ground in tip top condition and its pleasing to hear visitors and officials praising the work done. Again people in the community have been able to use the ground and we welcome the new social members who have joined the club. Having already invested in the playing side facilities we are planning for 2022 and have already invested in a Defibrillator which will be available whenever the club is open.

We held the Annual Alex Beck Memorial Charity game on August BH Sunday and the game between Todwick and Waleswood was well attend with over 70 cars on the ground with over £800 raised for the 2 nominated Charities, well done and a big thankyou to everyone who organised and attended.

Wales Parish Council NEWSLETTER

Autumn/ Winter Issue - 2021

Chairman’s Note Dear Parishioners, It is a great honour to address you for the first time as Chairman of our Parish Council. As I begin my new role as Chairman I am aware that many things need to change so that we as a Council can meet the aspirations of our community of Wales and Kiveton Park. The good news is that we have an outstanding group of Parish Councillor’s who have a great mix of youth and experience that are very committed to try different things to deliver for our community. We are going to be looking at how we can deliver better “youth services” because of the loss of those services in recent years in our community. We have fantastic young people in our community, and we intend to support them. The serious financial burdens such as fuel prices and the removal of the family credit assistance which will be placed on parts of the Community we will be working closely with the many community partners we have, in addition to other elected representatives, and South Yorkshire Police to become more responsive and proactive in supporting you, our Community. Look out for our upcoming Bonfire Night Celebrations, and Christmas Lights Switch On. After missing these two big community events during lock down last, we look forward to these events being back on this year, and seeing everyone their again. This is a real time of change for us as a Council, and I welcome your views on what you think we can do better as a Council, for you, our community.

NEW DEFIBRILATOR You may have noticed that we have had installed at the front of the Parish Council a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Thanks to the family and friends of Louise Griffin who contributed £650.00 towards the new AED. The new defibrillator in total cost £1500 including VAT to replace the old AED. Sadly in the past, there have been thefts and vandalism of AED’s from unlocked and locked cabinets. A second-hand defibrillator has NO monetary value. Each defibrillator has a serial number and can always be traced. AED’s need constant daily/weekly checking and monitoring – without such monitored governance they may not operate correctly or at all if required to be used at the time of an emergency. Without immediate defibrillation and CPR when cardiac arrest occurs, the chances of survival are less than 5%. With a defibrillator being used on a patient combined with effective CPR, the odds of

survival can be increased to 50%. The placement of AEDs outdoors and in public places provide 24 hour access so that emergency lifesaving equipment is available to everyone whenever it is needed. AEDs are housed in secure, weatherproof, cabinets. In the event of a suspected SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) the observer and those present must report immediately the incident by ringing the Emergency Services on 999. Instructions will be given by the Operator on how to assist in the incident and will be given a code to unlock the cabinet. Having obtained the access code from the Emergency Services, open door and remove the defibrillator along with accompanying resuscitation kit. LOCATION Community centre Viking Way. Why is ‘Pick Up or Pay Up’ being promoted by the Borough Council? Why it’s important to pick up after your dog: Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a single-celled, microscopic parasite that lives in the intestines and can be present in high numbers in the stool of infected animals. It is generally spread by the faecal-oral route, meaning that a person likely comes in contact with the stool (or a surface or soil contaminated by the stool) of the infected animal or person, then they touch their mouth or eat and drink something; often the person cannot see that their hands are contaminated and they accidentally eat the parasite and become infected. People

8

Wales Parish Council

infected with Cryptosporidium may develop stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and fever, or in the very worst case, blindness. People can also be infected by several species of tapeworms. Echinococcus multicularis and Echinococcus granulosus can infect people who come into contact with infected animal’s stool (or anything – including the animal’s fur that is contaminated). The symptoms of disease vary with the type of worm, but can include respiratory or digestive problems. Dog waste can take up to 12

01909 515784

months to fully break down. The parasites and bacteria can then stay in the soil for years, and when rainwater washes over dog mess, it then flows into the drainage systems. That contaminated water is carried into lakes, streams, and rivers. A roll of 100 poo bags only cost a couple of pounds (and an empty crisp packet is just as good). So, please remember to pick up after dog, help make the community a safer place to walk and play and always remember to wash your hands!

Macmillan Coffee morning People all over the UK hosted their own Coffee Morning recently and donations raised on the day were made to Macmillan to help people affected by Cancer. Wales Parish Council participated on Wednesday 22nd September, held at the Parish Council offices where much cake, tea and coffee were consumed (and some councillors consumed more cake than was good for them – no names mentioned!). All in all, £230.26 was raised, which has been added to

Wales Childcare Partnership Located in the grounds of Wales Primary School

Here at Wales Childcare Partnership we are always willing to help others however we can. Our children visited our local Church recently to take donations of food from their families as part of the Harvest Festival. We also had a ‘Princess and Superhero Day’ to raise as much money as possible for ‘The Children’s Hospital Charity’ and we had a very special guest…… Princess Anna from Frozen made a special appearance and the children had so much fun singing and dancing along with her! Thank you so much to ‘A WHOLE NEW WORLD EVENT ENTERTAINMENT’ it was very much appreciated and Princess Anna was just amazing! This term has already been full of fun, as always, with lots of autumnal activities underway and even more exciting things planned on the run up to Christmas! Halloween & Bonfire night activities will soon be in full swing! From spiders to pumpkins, witches to ghosts, monster apples, spooky biscuits, saltdough ghosts, creative fun, the list goes on! And not forgetting, ‘The most wonderful time of the year’ is fast approaching and at Wales Childcare Partnership we strive to bring that extra festive touch to our children’s experiences within nursery! From the sparkle of glitter to the lights on the Christmas tree, Christmas parties, the sound of the children’s voices singing Christmas carols and the crisp autumn leaves on the ground, we have so much fun in store and that fun never ends! Come rain, snow or sunshine, our children can independently access our extensive outdoor environment with our

‘Forest-Schools’ like approach! We are very lucky to have such a large outdoor area surrounded by woodland, giving children opportunities to run, climb, build dens, create their own ‘campsites’ and come close to nature with our nature walks all on a daily basis. Children are provided with such a wide range of experiences here at Wales, the fun is endless and the skies are their limits! And not forgetting our ‘HOLIDAY CLUB’…… Do you have the school holidays covered? Could we help, even at short notice? Our holiday club is all about having as much fun as every child could possibly imagine. And we don’t even have to look far…… within the grounds of Wales Childcare Partnership and Wales Primary School we have a park, a woodland, playing field, huge outdoor area, willow domes and trees for den building, along with a huge range of resources, games, activities and outings to local parks and attractions! We offer a flexible system to make holiday periods as cheap as possible! Sessions to choose from: 9:00am-3:30pm = £20.00 9:00am-4:30pm = £23.00 (Includes tea) 8:00am-3:30pm = £23.00 (Includes breakfast) 8:00am-4:30pm = £25.50 (Includes breakfast and tea)

8:00am-6:00pm = £28.00 (Includes breakfast and tea) Snacks, milk and water are also provided throughout the day. However, children are required to bring a packed lunch when attending holiday club. Playgroup & Nursery Here at Wales Childcare Partnership we offer a range of sessions to choose from between 8:00am and 6:00pm (dependent upon availability), for 2, 3 & 4 year olds. (8:00-6:00, 9:00-3:05, 9:00-12:00, 12:05-3:05, 8:00-12:00, 8:00-3:05, 8:00-4:30, 9:00-4:30, 12:05-6:00, 12:05-4:30). We offer a hot dinner service or the option to bring along a packed lunch. Fresh fruit, milk and water are available throughout every session. (We also offer 15 hours FREE early education funded places for all 3 & 4 year olds, 30 hours FREE early education funded places for eligible 3 & 4 year olds and 15 hours FREE early education funded places for eligible 2 year olds). For any further information or to book into our holiday club (ages 2 to 11 years), playgroup (age 2-3 years), nursery (age 3/4 years), or to put your child’s name down on our waiting lists, please call Leanne on 07425134515 or Email: enquiries@wccp.org.uk

The Saxon Golf Society Well the season is now well underway with both singles and doubles match play concluded. The singles winner being our Captain Neil Murray, and the doubles winners Bryan Hallam and Paul Whelan, with the doubles champions keeping their pairing again for 2022. The Days out league has just two more dates left in this year's calendar; Phoenix GC near Brinsworth in November, and the Turkey Stableford takes in December at Messingham Grange GC near Scunthorpe. Since the last article we enjoyed a Texas scramble competition at Ramsdale GC, and the winning team had a comfortable victory due to the high number of birdies they achieved in their round. One of our main outings was the 3 day event held this year in June at Skegness, with Captain Neil Murray securing the Gold Coast Trophy. July took us for the first time to Thornhurst Manor GC, and the golf was followed by a most welcome roast dinner! Once again it was that man captain Neil Murray who took first place, and his handicap of 7 is testament to his ability. Neil's Captain's Day was at Belton Woods near Grantham, and Neil was

extremely generous with both the quality and value of the prizes he put forward and the members would like to thank him for dipping deep into his pocket and also for the various 4 ball vouchers he put up for auction for our chosen charity for 2021. These on their own realised a sizeable figure of £315, Which brings us onto our charity day held in August at Rother Valley GC. It is a society ruling that the captain cannot win the prizes put forward on his own captain's day, which is a good job as Neil actually won again with the best score on the day!! Two trophies competed for on the day, the individual Glen Ramsden Memorial Trophy and the doubles for the Mick Martin Shield. The latter was won by Paul Yates and Steve Walsh, and the former by Paul Yates who had an exceptional round in the afternoon to see off his nearest rival Lee Marshall on the day by 3 points. I would like to thank both Richard and Jason at Rother Valley for their kind donation of a 4 ball and a golf lesson voucher which were auctioned off towards the Saxon's charity for this year. The Saxon Golf Society members deserve a big thank you too as they made lots of additional personal

monetary contributions on the day and also throughout the year as they always do. It should also be noted that most of the golf clubs visited this year for days out have been kind enough to provide a 4 ball voucher for us to auction off. The most recent day out in October was our version of the Ryder Cup, which is the oldies vs the younger members of the society and took place at Oakmere Park GC over 27 holes, resulting in a 5 all draw, but because the trophy was won last year by the "youngsters" (I say this tongue in cheek as some are approaching 50), they retain the trophy. The monthly medal competitions have just two courses left to play, and the overall aggregate winner could still come from as many as the top 7 placed members. It has been great to get back to almost normality, and we are pleased to have resumed our monthly meetings in the Saxon pub on the first Sunday of each month at 7pm. As always, the invitation to any one interested in joining us is warmly extended, or if you would like some information on anything then please contact Paul Joynes on 07990 616545. Until next time, stay safe and play well

After a strange football season, we managed to achieve some success with the girls and women’s leagues running end of season cup competitions. Our U9s, U11s and women’s 1st team all worked wonders to reach their respective Sheffield & Hallamshire Girls League Shield finals, which took place at Shelley, near Huddersfield. While the results didn’t go as we’d have liked, everyone at the club is proud of the way the players represented our village, and we’re sure that this taste of defeat will spur them on to go one better next time round! We had our busiest day of the year in July when hosting a junior tournament in conjunction with Wales High School. Kids from as far afield as Tibshelf, Nottingham and Barnsley entered teams, with games being played by U7 and U8 boys, and U10 and U11 girls. There was some fantastic football on show, and the highlight of the day was the U7s final, which saw our very own KPFC team emerge victorious after coming through the group and knockout stages before winning the final - well done boys! Our first thanks go to the young referees we had taking the whistle for the very first time - we hope they enjoyed the experience and are willing to give it another shot - we can’t play without them! We also appreciate the hours put in by so many volunteers on the day and in the weeks prior; from those manning the car park, entry gate, to those running the club bar and scoring tent, and all who donated prizes for our tombola and raffle. Further success the boy’s section with the news that our Under 10s won the Tickhill Junior Tournament! Well done lads! Finally, a big Kivo welcome to our new Over 35s team! There are plenty of familiar faces in the team, who play their games on Saturday afternoons in the Wragg League. For the coming season they will be based at Thurcroft Hub, but they will be back ‘home’ for the 2022/23 season when we have a new pitch to accommodate them...

Planning passed - Objections overruled ! As many of you will now be aware the planning application to build 200 homes on land off Chapel Way and adjacent to Norwood cresent was passed on the 14th October. A number of obections were submitted, which focussed on the increased traffic on Chapel Way, Lambrell Ave, Carlton gate drive, Queens ave and Walesmoor ave as well as throughout the village at peak times and extra pressure on the village schools and health care provision. Also the enviromental impact, as this area of land is regularly frequented by Deer. Cllr Dominic Beck said “Despite our very best efforts unfortunately the plans were approved today by the Planning Board by a close vote of 7-6. Aside from being absolutely gutted that at the second time of asking the developers were given the go ahead, I’d like to thank residents for their support which has been incredibly helpful in formulating our opposition. There are 30 conditions the developers now have to abide by and we will make sure they do so on every single one!”

TAK

www.takponies.org Todwick & Kiveton Pony rescue & rehoming centre Registered Charity 1191364

An update from Tak, all our ponies are fit and healthy and we recently welcomed back beautiful Martha, Georgia and Thelma, who are all now settled in again. We have a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers and along with myself we attend to the ponies needs twice a day. Our Tak charity shop also has wonderful volunteers who work to keep the funds coming in especially now winter is on it's way. Visit our shop on Colliery Rd and grab a bargain or two. I just want to say a massive thank you to all past and present and to each every one of you who have donated either to the ponies or the shop, without you we wouldn't be as successful. If you would like to donate feed we use traditional mix, healthy hooves and senior mash. We have to move into our original field next may, so I'm currently looking for additional grazing, so if anyone can help then please get in touch. A million Thanks from myself and the ponies. Stay safe Janine

Set for another busy winter. September saw the start of football club winter training once again at the Kiveton Community Sports Park, training that will stretch all the way through to the end of March. The majority of the teams training at the facility are from our own Kiveton Park

F.C. However the pitches are in huge demand at this time of year and another sixteen teams from five clubs in the area are also training at the facility. Although the pitches are busy throughout the year, September through to the end of March is undoubtedly their busiest period.

The floodlit artificial pitches allows the teams to continue to train throughout the often wet and dark winter months. As well as football club training there is also a competitive five a side league on a Monday evening, a successful walking football group and numerous casual groups all playing the beautiful game.

Dear Friends Well what a year 2021 has been. Maybe some of you are only just getting your minds and emotions around what happened to us as a community in 2020 as we responded to a global pandemic. Now 2022 is only a couple of months away. Where did 2021 go! Well it’s certainly not been a smooth year that’s for sure. The past year reminds me of climbing Wales Parish Church bell tower. It is a narrow and steep circular staircase with rough walls and you climb it in a clockwise direction. You arrive at the top exhausted and out of breath even with decent fitness levels. Maybe it felt at times like you were climbing the tower, going round and round in circles during the early part

Mothers’ Union After the long months of lockdown we finaly held our first meeting in September. We also held a service of thanks giving at the church, which gave members time to reflect on the past months / years and to think about how we move on as a group. Since that first meeting we have now decided to change the time, the day and location.

of 2021 with distancing and masks introduced again after Christmas when we were hoping things might improve. Maybe you have felt the rough edges of life such as an illness or bereavement like you might feel the rough edges of the tower walls in that narrow climb. As 2021 draws to a close maybe you are feeling like many feel feel when they reach the top of the bell tower, completely exhausted and out of breath what with coming to terms with a new normality, returning to work or even continuing from home, then theirs the threat of a rising energy prices or less food in supermarkets. Everything is far from easy in life as Christmas 2021 approaches. But the babe of Bethlehem did not So our meetings in future will now be held on a Wednesday morning, 10:30am at St Johns Church. And everyone is most welcome to join us there. Once again the Mothers’ Union will be producing Christmas shoe boxes for the Rotherham Lighthouse charity, who support homeless people in Rotherham and the surrounding area. Any donations towards this cause would be gratefully received.

come into a perfect world that starry night two thousand years ago. No does his arrival this year depend on perfection, whether there’s a turkey on the table or not Jesus will come despite it all. Jesus is perfect gift in the midst of the uncertainty and brokenness that is Advent. His coming is not dependent on lavish displays of Christmas lights, picture-perfect mantel pieces with stockings hung just so. Jesus will arrive whether the tree is real or not and his gift to the world is the promise of love, joy and peace. Gifts not found under layers of wrapping paper but symbolized in a simple hug. How we have longed to hug and be hugged in 2020 and 2021. I pray we all might enjoy a proper Christmas with our families this year. A Christmas filled with the best presents money can’t buy. The gifts of love, joy and peace which are freely given by God to the world through his son Jesus Christ. Congratulations to Kiveton Community Woodland’s Volunteer Heroes The Conservation Volunteers recently held its annual ‘TCV Heroes Awards’ – recognising passionate volunteers across the UK. This year’s winners in the ‘Outdoors & Active’ category, were our very own Green Gym members, Chris Thomas and Margaret Lister. Chris and Margaret have been volunteers at Kiveton Community Woodland for a decade, joining the Green Gym from day one. They are the most dedicated and passionate individuals - championing our community green space and taking great pride in how it has developed over the years. It is now an amazing place for local families and wildlife - largely thanks to their continuous commitment and hard work as part of the Green Gym team. Both Chris and Margaret have faced considerable adversity over their volunteering journey.

Wales/Kiveton Methodist Church It is with great relief there that our lives are beginning to move back to a semblance of normality again. Wales/Kiveton Methodist Church had to adopt the use the of zoom to carry out services during the lockdowns. However Services are now being held again in church, although precautions are still in place to try and keep everyone safe. Some activities took place in spite of the difficulties, and one of our preachers Keith Abel embarked on several sponsored bicycle rides raising close to £3300 to purchase bicycles for children in Uganda. Also recently a MacMillan coffee morning raised £195 The traditional harvest festival used to have vast arrays of produce that people would bring in to church, grown usually from their own gardens

18

Regardless, they always bring a positive spirit to the Green Gym group and continue to find immense pleasure in volunteering. Green Gym sessions were put on hold during lockdown, and social isolation hit hard. What is so admirable about these two ladies is that they continued to visit the woodland every day - walking to maintain their physical fitness, chatting to combat feelings of isolation, and connecting with the public. Chris and Margaret have been instrumental in the community woodland’s past, and it is clear that they care a great deal about its future. You can see a lovely video of the Green Gym in action, and Chris and Margaret

or allotments. A must have hymn "We plough the fields and scatter" was always sung and reflected this harvest that God had bestowed upon us.

It is likely our Christingle service will be on the12th December, and an own arrangement service on the 19th which will include listening to our favourite Christmas hymns and songs.

However times have changed and most of these items have been replaced by tins of baked beans, along with other longer lasting foodstuffs, all of which was donated to Kiveton Food Bank based at the Kiveton colliery offices to help those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves.. "All good things around us are sent from heaven above, so thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love" After the sad and sudden passing away earlier this year of our minister Jen Mullis OBE, we have been blessed with another lovely lady minister, Reverend Angela Pothecary. A warm welcome to Angela and her husband Phil to Wales. Our services are held the second Sunday of each month beginning at 3pm.

If you have any queries about volunteering, upcoming events, or Kiveton Community Woodland, please contact The Conservation Volunteers: southyorkshire@tcv.org.uk, 01302 388832 The Conservation Volunteers manages Kiveton Community Woodland on behalf of the Land Trust.

It would be lovely to see anyone who would like to come and share these services with us, so please come along and join us,

History society

Formed in 2006, Kiveton Park and Wales History Society has become a pillar of the community thanks to the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of its members. The society continues to participate in and host community events and you may remember our very successful WW1 Commemoration Day event in September 2014. We are continually encouraging new members to join (membership is £12 per annum) and we are always on the lookout for new material to post on our website. You may be inspired to join us if you have a look at the website (see

link) or attend one of our meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month at our new venue, Wales Chapel, School Road where we are hoping to resume having speakers giving talks on a variety of historical topics, starting around 7.00 pm.

Since its formation, members of the society (and some non-members) have researched and written a number of books and pamphlets which can still be purchased if you contact the society
