We’re BACK !

Unfortunately with lock down and furlough we were unable to produce our usual June and September editions but now we are back bringing you the best free community magazine in Rotherham.

Who could have imagined this time last year what was waiting for us around the corner. If someone had said there will be a time when schools will close for months and people would be paid to stay at home we would have laughed in their face.

page 17 Covid Task Force Community Woodland page 18 Friendly Bench

But that was the unprecedented reality, with shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants all being closed down, along with not being able to meet with loved ones, washing our hands into submission and of course the wearing of face masks. But, if nothing else, events this year has certainly brought the community together with people looking out for and helping the elderly that had to isolate and also looking for new ways of trying to continue with annual events such as trick or treating replaced this year with the pumpkin trail.

Unfortunately the village bonfire had to be cancelled so too the annual Christmas light switch on event. But the lights WILL still be on as usual lighting up the back end of a very dim year. Never more so will the greeting and hope for a happy new year be more relevant than this year. Bearing in mind whatever restrictions may or may not be in place we hope you have an enjoyable Christmas and please continue to show that community spirit by looking out for the elderly, vulnerable and lonely in our community. STAY SAFE !

We organize and run a weekly Thursday morning Walking group from the Old Colliery Offices, in conjunction with The Kiveton Park Medical Practice, making use of the wonderful Kiveton Community Woodland. Anyone can join this group and it meets at the Old Colliery Offices from 10.00, walk starts at 10.30. The current Govt restrictions exempts community support groups of which this is one, as it is a formally organized support group that is essential to provide mutual aid We are a Social Prescribing Hub

We have now been a Social Prescribing hub since 2015. Social prescribing is a service which is about helping people with Longterm conditions to access non-medical sources of support within the community. It has been shown to reduce people’s feelings of social isolation, helps them to make friends and to enjoy a range of activities, which in turn has a positive effect on how they feel. Prior to Covid we ran as part of this programme, a Lunch and Games group which ran on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Activities included various board games, dominos, cards and quizzes and our aim is to start them back up again once it is safe to do so.

mmunity Development Trust for YOU Meet some of our volunteers and hear what they have to say about being a volunteer here at the Trust: TOMMY & ELAINE Tommy & Elaine have volunteered since the beginning of the national lock down back in March, they kindly pick up several food parcels every week and deliver them in the community. Tommy says: ‘We contacted the CDT to refer a neighbour who couldn’t get out for their shopping which lead us to coming each week for more people. We were fed up with being in the house and wanted to give back to the community, the more people out delivering is less work for others.” Tommy and Elaine have now developed new friendships through their volunteering roles and found out more about their neighbours. MATT, JO & CAROL Matt joined up after seeing a facebook post and decided to contact the CDT directly. Matt says, “I didn’t like to think that there were people being isolated and not being able to go to the shop for their groceries.” Carol “I am widowed and happy I am able to help the community this way” Jo “We have developed relationships with the people we take to now and it has led us to help them more by picking up prescriptions etc. One resident has family working hard for the NHS and the others don’t live nearby.”

MEET MADGE Madge moved here 1 year ago she says, “I wanted to get back to an area I knew. The year before I moved had been fairly traumatic for me with a separation, selling a house, having to sell a double garage full of items, house hunting, an operation and a removal date deferred 3 times from June to September. By this time, I was acutely depressed and did not know a soul. Earlier this year I had to admit to the GP how I was feeling so I was referred to Kim the social prescribing officer at the Old Colliery Offices who called me and encouraged me into volunteering. I now help pack bags of groceries ready for delivery and have also helped to serve meals prior to lockdown. Everyone there is extremely friendly and encouraging, then came lockdown and it has affected me again because I still only know the people at the Trust. The Trust has been a sanity saver for me. Hopefully, I can bring myself to go more often. They certainly make everyone feel welcome.

A Reflection on 2020 As we start to think about bringing 2020 to a close, it is worth reflecting on what has been the most challenging of years for so many. The Covid-19 pandemic has been difficult on many levels. Financially, as people have lost their jobs, seen their hours reduce or their businesses struggle. This year has been the loneliest and most stressful which has sadly meant that for many mental health and wellbeing has suffered and as we move into 2021, this should not be ignored. I fear the after effects on our mental health will take much longer to recover than a return to normality itself. Alas, we should remember those who we have sadly lost to the virus from our communities and beyond. However, whilst 2020 has been a year to forget we all live in hope that 2021 will be better and therefore we must hold onto a few positives that have come from this. 2020 has brought us closer together, not physically but in our common purpose. This year has made us all more active in our community - by supporting our neighbours, donating to a food bank or by simply standing on our doorsteps clapping our NHS and Key Workers. I have represented our area for nearly 10 years and this year has shown how alive and well our community and civic spirit is and I have never felt as honoured to represent the many truly incredible people who live here. We do not know what the future will bring. However, we can be sure to stick together, support one another, and look out for the vulnerable and needy. That is what community is all about and we have it in abundance. I wish you a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas and New Year. Dominic Cllr. Dominic Beck Dominic.beck@rotherham.gov.uk or 07881268115

The Saxon Golf Society 2020 season At the beginning of March the first day out at Wike G C near Leeds took place, which was the fun team building competition. We all sat together afterwards in the bar and discussed the next day out at Thornhurst Manor scheduled for April; how wrong we were. The magnitude of what was about to pervade all walks of life came soon when 8 members of the Golf Society took their long since booked 5 day tour to Spain. We arrived back home on Friday 13th (a potentially ominous date), but the following day flights leaving the UK for Spain were being turned around half way on their journey! Well golf has not been its usual format since March, and all UK golf clubs shut down for 2 months (reopening mid May but with various restrictions-limited numbers and no “getting together” before or after the round). Our Ryder Cup event at Trent Lock resulted once again in a comfortable win for the Young uns team; must be that the Oldies are getting a bit creaky, and even the old stalwart Ted Morley at 76 has lost a bit of form!

Captain’s day was held at Retford G C during their centenary year, but unfortunately this year’s Captain Russ King was unable to participate. We all wish him well and that he can soon resume swinging with the Saxon next year. The fund raising charity day event in August was held once again at Rother Valley G C, and a big thank you as always to the Manager Richard for the 4 ball voucher, and to the Pro Jason who donated a 2 hour lesson voucher for us to auction off to raise more charity funds. The winner of the Glen Ramsden Memorial Trophy was Darren Clarke, who also featured in winning the Mick Martin Shield alongside Bryan Hallam and Andrew Walker Looking forward to 2021 its our intention to make bookings for a full itinerary to take place from March to December. Its also hoped that our monthly meetings in the Saxon can also be resumed. In our 21st year of fundraising for good causes, it has proven difficult to keep momentum, so if there are any companies out there in our region that would like to help with either donations

or gifts to auction off then please call Paul Joynes on 07990 616545 who would be really pleased to accept any contributions on behalf of the society. Finally, thank you also to Retford and Hillsborough G C for their kind donations of a 4 ball voucher to auction off for charity fundraising. See you in 2021 for happier and better times.

Waleswood Sports Cricket Club Covid-19 has had a major impact on the lives of communities and cricket pales into insignificance especially for those who have lost loved ones as happened to a member of our club. Being a registered charity we are grateful for the help we have received from our sponsors and volunteers to enable the club to get through this year. We have maintained the ground and communal area giving people a place to exercise and walk their pets in safety and we appreciate the positive comments from many people who have taken advantage of this. Our fantastic group of volunteers took the opportunity to revamp the pavilion and facilities which resulted in many favourable comments from visiting teams once cricket commenced.

W.S.C.C.

Cricket commenced in mid-July in a covid-19 safe environment and our thanks go out to all member, visitors and supporters who followed all the guidelines. The 1st team finished mid table and the 2nd team won their division with only one defeat to reach a play-off final against Misterton CC which unfortunately they lost but they were a credit to the club. All Sunday league Cricket was cancelled. We held the Annual Alex Beck Memorial Charity Game against Todwick which raised substantial funds for the RAF benevolent fund and Safe at Last Charities. Thanks to all who made the day a success and congratulations to Todwick who took the spoils in a game that was played in a great spirit?

Cricket Field Lane, Wales Bar, Sheffield.

We also gave access to a junior U11 football club to use our facilities for a summer training programme as their facilities were unavailable. Unfortunately we were targeted by criminals in October but with our new security system update the police were on quickly on site resulting in only a small amount of damage and no loss of property. Let’s hope some normality can return in 2021 but in the meantime Waleswood SCC hopes everyone can stay safe and well and enjoy as best you can this Christmas. NEWSLETTER

Winter Issue - Dec 2020

Cllr Mike Brabbs

Chairman’s Note

To paraphrase a philosopher: Covid 19, Humanity 4 “Are we nearly there yet?” What parent hasn’t heard those words when taking their children out for the day? My response was usually along the lines of “the first to see the sea buys the ice creams”. That brought silence for a while but no we are not there yet. As far as coronavirus is concerned – are we nearly there yet? The answer lies in our hands. Do we ignore the facts – it hasn’t gone away; we will be with it for a long time yet. I have had my “endangered species” notification from the NHS and backup information from the Rotherham Medical Commissioning Group. I will abide by the advice and stay alive. All the contact details are there for me. My parents lived in an age when the shout was “don’t forget your tin hat and gas mask”. Now it’s, “don’t forget your facemask”. Then it was Lend a Hand on the Land or Make do and Mend. I suggest that now it should be Lend a Hand to Your Neighbour or Make Do and Stop Moaning – at least it’s not 2,000 lb bombs raining down from Junker 88s. Use your own “nous” and decide what is rubbish and what is sense to stay alive. A walk to Wales Square and back twice a day, facemask at the ready, avoiding cyclists on the pavement, is sufficient for me. Fresh air and a little exercise, and an input of Vitamin D is OK. P.S. After almost 50 years of almost married bliss can anyone explain why husbands have excuses and wives have reasons?

SUMMER OF LOCKDOWN We’ll remember this summer as the summer of lockdown, when we were incarcerated in our homes by government decree. It will also be remembered as another year of enjoying the spectacular displays in the hanging baskets lining the main roads through the village courtesy of Hobsons’ Nurseries at Swallownest. With characteristic modesty, Doug Hobson put the colourful displays down to the warm, clement weather that began in spring and stretched into summer and that suited the temperament of the plants to a tee. Hmm…maybe so, but we also know that the Hobsons

careful selection of plants will have been equally influential in achieving the desired outcome. Our thanks to them. Some residents have complimented us on the five new planters located on highway verges from School Road to the Hard Lane junction but thought there are not enough of them and they are too far apart. We agree and have recently purchased another five and will be locating them in suitable positions that have the approval of

Rotherham Council in its capacity as the local highway authority for the borough. The planters will be maintained summer and winter by Hobsons’ Nurseries. We shall be seeking sponsorship from local companies to cover maintenance costs, and if you are interested in sponsoring one, please contact the clerk, Richard Waller, on 01909 515784 or by email at office@wales-pc.org.uk .

DAILY HARVEST Many of you have remarked on how well maintained the recreation ground is these days, and it is true that our staff take pride in their work and aim to keep it that way. Their efforts however are constantly undermined by a significant minority of youths who congregate on the ground in the evenings and into the early hours of the morning systematically seeking to vandalise and destroy anything they find: gates, equipment, litter bins and benches. This is not something that is unique to Kiveton and Wales but a national problem. At its root is a culture of drugs – dealing and taking – which blights the lives of residents who must suffer it and the perpetrators themselves, although it is doubtful that they are self-aware enough to appreciate the slippery slope they are on.

Last month our staff regularly “harvested” a large quantity of spent drug canisters that a gang of youths had discarded during a night of drug taking, anti-social behaviour and vandalism. We passed the details onto the police with a request that they act. It is a daily occurrence to find quantities of drug “wraps”, “hippy crack” canisters and the occasional needle that a drug addict has used “to shoot up” on the recreation ground Wales Parish Council

and vicinity. To be fair to the police, they can only be at their most effective if the community proactively supports them by being their eyes and ears. We understand that people are reluctant through fear of reprisals, but there is a way in which you can report crime completely anonymously: ring 101 and ask to be treated as anonymous, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 (click the button requesting anonymity) or complete their online form at 01909 515784

https://crimestoppers-uk.org/ give-information and they will do the rest. Alternatively, call the clerk, Richard Waller, on 01909 515784 and he will report the details to the police for you. To quote Sir Edmund Burke, the famous 18th century Parliamentarian, “Evil prevails when good men [and women] fail to act”. This is just as relevant and true today. office@wales-pc.org.uk

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Over the last few months Covid-19 has seen major disruptions to our way of live and Remembrance Sunday was no exception. The traditional parade from the St John’s Room to St John the Baptist church could not go ahead due to government restrictions and the service took place at the memorial in The Square. There was never any question of the service not going ahead – it is too important a commemoration for that and not even Hitler, never mind Covid-19, could stand in the way of remembrance – but it was a low-key affair compared to past years. Streaming the service live on Facebook, the Reverend Gary Schofield conducted proceedings in front of the memorial and was assisted with readings by Martin Crowther and Cllr Dominic Beck of Rotherham

IF YOU’VE GOT A PROBLEM, WE CAN HELP The Covid-19 pandemic has touched us all in one way or another, but it’s also shown our community at its best with everyone looking out for each other and support available from both public and private sectors. Kiveton & Wales Covid Task Force Despite the fact this year has been so challenging for everyone, we’ve been blessed here in Kiveton and Wales to have some wonderfully committed people who’ve worked so hard to help others during the Covid lock downs. Because of the suddeness of the initial lock down, people rushed to help with little time to plan, so as we entered tighter lock down restrictions for the second time, we sought as a community to more closely co-ordinate the help we

could provide to anyone suffering as a consequence of lock down. Wales Parish Council approved a plan that brought together, Community volunteers, Kiveton Primary Care Centre, the Borough Council, Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust, Kiveton & Wales Village Hall, Wales Parish Church, Traditional’s & other local businesses and Wales Parish Councillors. As a Covid Task Force we’ve been

Woodland Well-being walk By Hannah Darcel

On October 8th a lovely, socially distanced, guided walk took place on Kiveton Community woodland for Kindness in the Community week. Eleven participants joined the walk, in three separate groups, and enjoyed regular stops to notice the wildlife, learn about edible plants and chat about the management and heritage of the site.

There are loads of benefits to spending time in nature like reducing stress levels, feeling happier and improving concentration to name a few. So why not go out on your own sensory walk around the woodland? Turn off your mobile, take a few deep breaths, slow down your pace and take in your surroundings using all your senses.

privileged to be able to provide dozens of food parcels, a socially distanced Halloween event (to keep everyone safe), put together outdoor events to support good mental health, and are focusing on young people’s mental health (including trying to still make Christmas fun) If we can be of any assistance or support at all please contact me. Cllr Paul Martin Chair of Kiveton & Wales Covid Task Force You may have noticed the red and white markers dotted around the woodland, well now you can easily download the orienteering map by scanning the QR code on the main notice boards. Take a pen and paper to note down all the marker letters as you go. You could even make it more of a challenge and time yourself. We would love to know how fast you can do the whole course so why not share your time on our Facebook page. @ Southyorkshirecommunitywoodlands Family Festive Trail Get the kids, get wrapped up warm and head over to the woodland to see if you can find all six fun fact sheets about winter. There is something for everyone with photos for the little ones to find and talk about, questions for the kids and some interesting facts for the grown ups. You will learn about snowflakes, pine cones, hibernating animals and migrating birds. You can also scan the QR code on the main notice boards to find their exact locations. Join in, feel good! Volunteering All volunteering activity has been postponed until government lock down restrictions are lifted again. We have missed our Green Gym volunteers and can’t wait to see them all again soon. If you have any queries about Kiveton Community Woodland, volunteering or any of the activities mentioned in this article please contact The Conservation Volunteers at southyorkshire@tcv.org.uk, or call 01302 388832

Wales Childcare Partnership Located in the grounds of Wales Primary School

What a challenging time this year has been so far for everyone, along with many changes that we have all had to adapt to. But first and foremost, it goes without saying, that the safety of all children and of our staff has been and continues to be our top priority. As a nursery we are continuing to keep up to date with government guidance and take all necessary steps to keep all children, parents and staff members safe at all times. For all children within the setting, the day in nursery/playgroup has continued to remain as ‘normal’ as possible…… Halloween & Bonfire night activities have been in full swing! From spiders to pumpkins, witches to ghosts, monster apples, spooky biscuits, saltdough ghosts, creative fun, the list goes on! ‘Armistice Day’ (Teaching our children to remember): Our children have done some fantastic artwork and creative activities with a ‘poppy’ theme.

And not forgetting, ‘The most wonderful time of the year’ is fast approaching and at Wales Childcare Partnership we strive to bring that extra festive touch to our children’s experiences within nursery! From the sparkle of glitter, to the lights on the Christmas tree, the sound of the children’s voices singing Christmas carols and the crisp autumn leaves on the ground, we have so much fun in store and that fun never ends! Come rain, snow or sunshine, our children can independently access our extensive outdoor environment with our ‘ForestSchools’ like approach! We are very lucky to have such a large outdoor area surrounded by woodland, giving children opportunities to run, climb, build dens, create their own ‘campsites’ and come close to nature with our nature walks all on a daily basis. Children are provided with such a wide range of experiences here at Wales, the fun is endless and the skies are their limits!

Childcare for children of ages 2, 3 & 4 years: Playgroup & Nursery: Here at Wales Childcare Partnership we offer a range of sessions to choose from between 8:00am and 6:00pm (dependent upon availability), for 2, 3 & 4 year olds. Fresh fruit, milk and water are available throughout every session. (We also offer 15 hours FREE early education funded places for all 3 & 4 year olds, 30 hours FREE early education funded places for eligible 3 & 4 year olds and 15 hours FREE early education funded places for eligible 2 year olds).

Secondly, congratulations to Sean Ebbs, who was the winner of the October player of the month in the Sheffield County Senior League. Chris Nelson’s first team won all three games last month, and Sean hit four goals in the process, having converted to a forward in the preseason. Well done lads!! We are delighted to have re-introduced a men’s reserve team for the first time since 2013, which ensures there will be a game every Saturday afternoon at Wales High School! The first team, managed by Chris Nelson and coach Neil Newman, play in the Sheffield County Senior League First Division, the twelfth tier of the football pyramid, and will be hoping for a tilt at promotion. The reserves will be led by Jon Barnes, with Will Hutchison assisting in the dugout. They will play in the County Senior League Second Division, one step below the first team. We are making huge strides in terms of improving our matchday facilities at Wales High School, so be sure to pay a visit to cheer on the lads this season your support is vital as we look to climb the ladder.

We're delighted to announce the appointment of two very important roles at our football club. Taking the reigns as Head Coach is Gareth Brookman, who has been in charge of our successful Academy for a number of years, giving kids aged 4-6 a taste of football for the first time. In his new role, Gareth will help ensure coaching standards are kept to a high standard across all teams, offering advice where necessary. All coaches will be encouraged to contact the Head Coach when help is needed, a service that will result in our kids receiving the best football education possible.

We are also thrilled to welcome Rachel Habergham to the club as our new Welfare Officer. The role is one of the most important at any club, ensuring the safety and well-being of all our young players is given the highest priority. We thank Gareth and Rachel for their commitment to helping our club move forward, and would also like to thank outgoing Welfare Officer Suzanne Davis for the immense amount of hard work she put in to the role for a number of years, paving the way for our kids to enjoy the beautiful game. Up the Kivo!

During recent months the men’s section have had a couple of notable player awards. First team striker Rob Gorman was presented with a memento for reaching 200 club goals by his manager and ex-team mate, Chris Nelson. An outstanding achievement, and still going strong.

When KPFC moved to Wales High School in 2017, it was decided that the club would form a senior women's team for the first time. Secretary Gordon Johnson took the responsibility of advertising for players, and from an inaugural training session with just four players on a cold January evening in 2019, a team was assembled and competed in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women's League last season, with Ian Emsden offering additional help from the sidelines. This year, a second team has been formed, with Andy Rice and Emily Rowles taking on the role of joint-managers. They will compete in the next division down from the first team, and will aim to give playing time to everybody and develop players for the future. Be sure to get down to cheer on the girls - there will be a game on at Wales most Sundays!

What will Christmas look like this year ? As I write we have just entered Lock down 2. There is much talk of how we might save Christmas. It’s such a special time of year. Family and friends snuggle closely together on pews their faces aglow with love. Illuminated by the tiny flame of the Christingle - the Christ light. The thing is that we don’t have to save Christmas because Christmas actually saves us. In the Bible it says, ‘God loved the world and sent his only son Jesus. Everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.’ What a wonderful promise! We are eternally safe with God through the new life of Jesus. Jesus is the light of the world. The light of all lights. In him there is no darkness only joy and hope. When we live in hope we see the good things that have happened even through Covid 19. When we live in hope we get less bogged down in the sadness and difficulty and fear which can overwhelm us.

At Christmas ‘God is with us’ in the baby called Emmanuel. That promise of God being close in Jesus, when our

loved ones may not be this Christmas, is one of the most important things we can ever hear. It is particularly important and really matters when we are feeling down, or a bit alone, or if it seems everything around us is falling apart.

I pray that we may be able to hold a service in church on Christmas Day. The following Christmas Services are all on Wales Parish Church Facebook Live:

The good news of Christmas is that the God who made heaven and earth wants to do nothing more than to come to be with us. God doesn’t take away our fear or anxiety but is very close with us and alongside us through it all. That is reassuring and can make us feel less afraid.

24/12 Christingle 4.00pm

I hope you will join me on Christmas Eve at 4.00pm on Facebook Live for a unique Christingle Service. Although we can’t be with one another it doesn’t mean we need remain apart.

20/12 Carols by Candlelight 5.00pm

Midnight Mass 11.30pm 25/12 Christmas Day Service 9.15am May the light of the newborn Jesus illuminate your lives this Christmas and dispel the darkness and fear from your paths. God bless you and your family with a healthy and peaceful Christmas.

Mothers Union

It’s a long time since February when I last produced an article for this magazine on behalf of St John’s Mothers’ Union. In that article I had outlined our plans for 2020, and then suddenly, the year stopped and so did our meetings and our way of life. Hopefully we should be able to look forward to a better 2021. We managed to hold our AGM in February and in early March we had our belated Christmas meal at Monksbridge Farm and that was our last meeting. During lock down we have been keeping in touch with members by telephone as many, due to their age and medical conditions have been shielding. On a positive note and involving, lots of organising, like last year we decided to support Rotherham Lighthouse, by producing Christmas shoe boxes for the homeless in the Rotherham area. Well done to all those who helped and donated goodies. Anne Markham on behalf of Lighthouse sends her thanks. This year has also had a big impact on Music Tots, a group we help to support. Many of you have missed our Thursday mornings sing -a -long. So let’s hope that we can resume as soon as possible next year. So time to look forward to 2021 and hope that some normality can resume to all our life’s so that once again we can have meetings and support one another and local organisations that work within our community.

A CHILDHOOD MEMORY FROM STATION ROAD Dark outside, early evening No sound apart from the crackle of a coal fire Dad asleep in a brown, leather armchair In front of the roaring fire. No lights on The room lit by the yellow, flickering flames of the fire. Gigantic, constantly moving shadows Dance across the walls, ceiling and floor

Their best effects on the walls. They don’t make recognisable patterns They don’t make recognisable shapes They are not frightening But they are mesmerising. An occasional burst of extra energy, as a pocket of gas in the coal Flares up to lighten the room And send the shadows into a frenzy of dancing madness. Gradually , though, as the fire dies,

So do the active shadows. Mum comes in, lights go on, killing them for everYet not quite for ever as They will always remain a wonderful part of My childhood memories.
