The next deadline date for copy is 30th May, 2008. Well, it’s now time to sit back and enjoy Issue 20…..

OPENING OF THE NEW VILLAGE HALL 26th May 2008 The front and back page in this issue is dedicated to the fantastic new Village Hall – congratulations to the Village Hall Committee on completing such a fantastic and important feature of the village. What a landmark day this was in the history of our village community. Congratulations go to all the Trustees and volunteers at the Village Hall who have put in a tremendous amount of time to achieve this dream. It is a beautiful building that everyone should be proud of. The building was blessed by Rev. Gary Schofield of St. John’s church and Father Andy of St Augustines Catholic Church. A lovely part of the story is that the architect, Jonathan Hayward, is Kiveton born and bred. Jonathan said “As an architect and as a resident it has been a real privilege and an honour to have designed and opened such an important community building in a village which I call home. This has undoubtedly been a fantastic opportunity for me to utilize my architectural training in ‘green’ renewable technology to deliver this remarkable addition to our village.”

Pictures, Top: Jonathan Hayward with his children officially opening the hall. Middle: Keith Stone (Director of KPW Community Develpment Trust) chatting to bar staff Martine Wilson and Gill Shaw. Bottom: Ellie Cocks, Siovhan Neely and Bradley Smith test out the new gym equipment.

What does Sparkles do

Sparkles is a children’s party planning business. Sparkles will work within a person’s home or in a venue to provide everything needed for the perfect party. All parties are priced individually depending on size and requirements.

Sparkles Parties

A couple of examples of the parties we offer are: A “Cutie makeover”. This is a two hour party that includes giving each child a children’s makeover, with nails painted, fun makeup or face painting, fun foot spa treatments, games, party bags with a Polaroid picture of each child along with a supervised buffet time. Teenagers and adults pamper parties are also available. The Bear making party; every child will participate in a fun session of stuffing their very own teddy bear or rag doll to take home. They can add a creative touch by making t-shirts or bracelets for their bears to wear.

What does Sparkles offer

Sparkles can provide invitations, prizes, name labels, balloons and balloon delivery service. We also offer costume hire for children and a catering service with a chocolate fountain and much, much more. It takes the whole worry away for the parents who can be as involved as they like.

Sparkles Twilight

Twilight aims to satisfy the older age group with party ideas such as Fifties and Sixties nights, Hollywood superstar and Casino nights. Twilight will transform an evening to a very special event that your guests will never forget, with full decorations and special effects.

How it came about?

The idea of the children’s party planning, when It started was a fairly new concept and even now there are very few party planners offering the range of services that Sparkles does. Parents are constantly striving to offer something new for their children

and Sparkles are able to offer a full range of tailormade packages to suit all needs. In addition to offering parties for birthdays, Sparkles can offer seasonal parties such as Christmas events and many more. The range of parties available stretch greatly with many different events being celebrated. Sparkles have currently been trading for 10 Months and was set up with the help of a Prince’s Trust loan and support of Kiveton Park and Wales Community Development Trust.

Kiveton Creative Training

Thanks to Yorkshire Rural Community Council, the Community Development Trust idea of providing an IT & Media service for the community has gone from strength to strength. After four years of continued support and funding from YRCC, Kiveton Creative have now become a Limited company and are trading as a separate trading arm of the Kiveton Park and Wales Community Development Trust…

I

n 2003, the Trust obtained funding from Yorkshire Rural Community Council to provide an IT & Media service for the Community. This was initially a three year project, developing web sites for the community, offering computer repairs and a printing and media service. The project also offered low cost training for the community.

With YRCC funding, The Trust brought you the very first 4page issue of this newsletter. It was very well received and straight away issue 2 increased to 8 pages. As the funding for the successful project came to an end, YRCC agreed to continue the fund for another 12 months in order to bring the community the newsletter and in February 2007, the current team was employed and Room 10 Media Services became Kiveton Creative. Today, Issue 20 is the very first issue of Kiveton Park & Wales Community Matters newsletter brought to you without the financial support of YRCC. Learn to trade on Ebay Two new courses starting Wednesday 14th May • A beginners guide to Ebay • Trading on Ebay a step further

New couses are planned for • First Aid • Fire Marshalling • An Introduction to Makaton (a communication technique using signs, expressions etc)

If you are interested in any of these courses, please ring Julie or Dawn on 01909 773348 or email julie@kpwcdt.co.uk. Places are limited so please register your interest ASAP.

Training room available for hire

If you would like to enquire about venue hire, please contact Kelly on 01909 773567 or email kelly@kpwcdt.co.uk.

Kiveton Creative would like to thank YRCC for their valuable support whilst raising the profile of the newsletter in such a way that we are able to continue bringing news, views and community information once funding has ceased. Kiveton Creative Ltd are still providing low cost training for the community with help from the Learning Skills Council and Adult Community Learning. The training venue is improving all the time and the tutors are improving their own qualifications in order to bring you first class training. Courses are run by popular request, if there is a course you would like to see and we do not provide it, why not give us a call and we will endeavor to provide one in the future. We also try our very best to accommodate all who are interested in learning – if the day and time is not suitable, please let us know and we can try to rearrange future course days and times to suit.

Current low cost courses are: • Basic IT • Beginning Family History • Digital Imaging Stages 1 and 2 • Family History on the Computer • Desktop Publishing • Ebay Trading (Two Stages) • Card Craft

Drifting with Peter Barber

eter Barber, from Kiveton Park, started drifting in 2006 using a Nissan Cefiro in the Eurodift clubman championship, winning 5 of the 7 rounds that year. He went on to win the championship 71 clear points in front of second place. He was filmed for DME drifters, shown on Men and Motors, demonstrating Drifting and went on to teach the sport at Silverstone. For 2007 Peter decided to change car to a RX7 FC which again proved to be a good move, but this time in the Pro Class of Eurodrift and EDC (European Drift Championship). Peter finished 3rd overall in the series which was an amazing result as he only competed in 4 of the 6 rounds. In EDC he finished 14th overall - a good result since this was his 1st

year as a professional, competing against the top drivers in Europe. He missed out by 2 points for the “rookie of the year” award and qualified for the top 16 at every event. All the events were shown on Sky’s Men and Motors and Motors TV. He became Rotorstock 2007 champion in a competition run by the Mazda Rotary club at Santa Pod. Peter is looking forward to adding more trophies to the cabinet in the 2008 season with a later model RX7 FD. He is currently looking for sponsors so that he can compete in all events in EDC and a possible competition in Poland. Local business man Ray Boocock of Network Blinds in Worksop has every faith in Peter by being his sponsor and now his employer. Ray continues to support Peter every step of the way but the sport is very expensive and Peter needs more sponsors to get involved. Ray’s sponsor stickers are to be put on to the new car and any other sponsors would be added along with regular updates on the year’s progress.

7

If you feel you can sponsor Peter please E-Mail him at pbarber457@aol.com and we wish him all the very best for the 2008 season.

Drifting is all about the control of sliding a car round a succession of corners on a race circuit. Competitors are judged based on line, angle, speed, and show factor. Line involves taking the correct line, which is usually announced beforehand by judges. The show factor is based on multiple things, such as the amount of smoke, how close the car is to the wall, and the crowd’s reaction. Angle is the angle of a car in a drift, Speed is the speed entering a turn, the speed through and exiting the turn; the faster the better. Drifting events are held all over the country from Knockhill Scotland to Lydd in Kent.

Sheffield United Supporters Club Strange as it may seem supporters still don’t realize a coach for the home games (and some away games) has been organized for 38 years. This season, around £1000 has been lost on home coaches alone - join the supporters club and travel with them in order to keep them afloat! For information times of the coaches, please contact Chairman Roger Widdison 01909 771755 or Secretary Alan Smith 01909 562949.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE

K

iveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust employ five staff at the Old Colliery Offices. Many of you will know them and appreciate what a great job they do in managing the centre, providing training and a host of other services. You may not know that the Trust also have a large number of dedicated volunteers, without whom we would struggle to offer the range and quality of services. The range of tasks is considerable – everything from filing, cutting grass, applying for funding, roof

repairs, helping with classes and writing articles for this newsletter!

We value them all and want to say a big “thank you” for their time and effort.

They are all wonderful but one deserves special mention:

Arthur Whiteway is 80 years young and can be found virtually every day of the week at the Old Colliery Offices. This year alone he has arranged repair of guttering and replaced roof slates, boarded out and renovated attic space for us to store archived materials, cleared blocked drains, maintained the garden and grounds

Community Sports Programme

and numerous other jobs.

In case you think this sounds like exploitation – you try stopping him!!! He says it is keeping busy that keeps him going. I only hope I have a tenth of his energy at his age. Volunteering is great for all age groups but particularly good for young people wanting to improve their CV and job prospects. Two of our current staff started out as volunteers. If you have an hour to spend volunteering in any capacity, you can be sure of a warm drink and an even warmer welcome from all at the Community Trust. Telephone 01909 773567

Funding has been received from:

Tuesday 3rd June at 6.30pm at The old Colliery Offices

Lottery Awards for All Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Local Network Fund Trusthouse Sport Relief

This will be an opportunity to see the plans and have your questions answered: What facilities will there be? How many jobs will be created locally? When will building start? Where will the access to the site be? Are we prepared for the traffic impact?

Qualified, professional coaches are employed for all activities. If you would like to know more about any of these clubs, please contact us on 01909 773348

he Trust have been trading on e-bay for the people in the community for over two years. This has recycled thousands of items, provided extra income for our clients and over £20,000 for the Trust to use in Community projects. It is managed by volunteers who have become very proficient and professional in trading. The Neighbourhood Learning Network is providing funding for the Trust to run training courses in E-bay trading at the Old Colliery Offices from May. Courses are level 1 and 2, two hours per week for 10 weeks. Courses are free for any Parish resident, including refreshments. Even if you already buy and sell on e-bay, level 2 could teach you lots of “hot tips” to get up to 20% more for your goods. If you have never been on the internet before or you lack confidence in the trading, level 1 will give you the confidence you need to start. All our previous students and volunteers agree it is both exciting and rewarding. If you would like to enrol for either course, please contact Julie Draper on 01909 773348. The picture shows one very happy customer who bought his ride-on train from Kivoebiz. Matthew Beasley’s family drove all the way up from Reading to collect it and enjoyed a look around the Old Colliery Offices.

Wedding Dresses Twelve months ago, the Trust was given a large number of new, designer wedding dresses to sell. Numerous beautiful and happy brides took the opportunity to purchase dresses at massive savings. We still have 16 dresses remaining but need the space!!! This is your last chance to snap up a real bargain. No reasonable offer will be refused even though most have a price tag of over £1,000. Telephone 01909 773348 or just call down at the Old Colliery Offices

Going On what’s

The History Society

S

ince the launch of the History Society website you may have thought things would be a lot quieter now. Well that is not the case! There is still lots of behind the scenes activity going on. The book sales are really going well. The first edition of the Michael Sampson book History of Kiveton Park Colliery has sold out and copies of the revised edition are now available. Orders for the other books are being received on a regular basis. Photographs are still being collected and interviews still being conducted. Our thanks to all those people that have let us scan their photographs and given their time for the interviews.

“I personally, think it is a privilege to be invited to see these photographs and to hear some of the stories people have to tell.” Letters of support and appreciation have been received from far and wide. Membership continues to grow; at the last count we had 42 members. The most distant member is residing in Australia. The Society has had a couple of interesting outings in the last few months. Everyone enjoyed the visit to the National Coal Mining Museum. Even the ex miners amongst us found the day very interesting, educational and enjoyable. You can see from the photograph how much we were enjoying ourselves. The other trip was to the Sheffield Archives. It was a cold but very sunny day. We met at Kiveton Bridge station, those more senior amongst us used our passes

to get into town - well you have to put them to good use don’t you!! Our first stop was to visit the inner sanctum of local government with a very interesting tour of Sheffield Town Hall before having our lunch in the Winter Gardens and then making our way to the archives. The archives people knowing we were from the Kiveton and Wales History Society had on display, legers and books from Kiveton Park Colliery dating back over one hundred years. We also saw maps of our area going back centuries. A couple of interesting items that had nothing to do with Kiveton were letters written by Mary Queen of Scots whilst she was residing in the Manor Castle at Sheffield. As you can see we have interesting and fun times as members of the Society, so if you are not a member why not join now, or at least come to the next meeting to get an idea what we are about. Some of our members have gone on to take genealogy classes to learn about their own personal history. History meetings are held every other month and the next one is on the 15th May at the Old Colliery Offices.
