Welcome to issue 30 of The Kiveton & Wales Community Matters Magazine The Magazine for the Community by the Community We would like to thank all concerned for the articles and copy received. We are a not for profit publication brought to you by the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust bringing you news, views and Community information, with regular updates from many Community groups.
After a long hard winter everyone is now looking forward to the spring and summer and the signs are starting to show, plants and bushes are beginning to bud, the snow drops are blooming, birds are beginning to sing earlier as the mornings get lighter and the evenings are very slowly drawing out, so there is much to look forward to.
Once again I would like to thank our volunteers who brave all weathers in getting the Community Matters to your door and thanks once again goes to Andrea Marshall for all her hard work on the magazine.

In February Kiveton Creative a trading arm of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust secured funding from the Humber Learning Consortium (European Social Fund) to provide Key recession focused services under employment and employability (training and support) related to finding employment. Kiveton Creative were able to identify key areas of support which could assist people in increasing their employability skills, putting together a program of learning and support for people who requested it. The services provided ranged from CV creation or make over, basic computer training, interview practice tips and advice and help with job searching and application forms. Kiveton Creative would like to thank the Humber Learning Consortium for giving them the opportunity to provide this valuable free service. It is hoped that further funding will be available to enable us to continue this service throughout 2011.

WALESWOOD SPORTS CRICKET CLUB After a successful season both on and off the field in 2010 the club enters 2011 with change in the air. On the facilities side we have part refurnished the pavilion furniture and are hoping to complete the construction of a patio area in front of the pavilion. Funding was spent on the renovation of the square and grass pitches for juniors are being constructed. In 2010 two senior players attended a level 2 coaching course and successfully completed all three parts: coaching, child welfare and first aid.
Along with the two level one coaches we also have, the club can now offer expert coaching to all levels of playing ability. On the playing side it is hopeful many of last years successful 1st team will be available for the challenges of Div 4. In 2010 the 2nd team gave a number of junior players who could not find an opportunity to play at their own club a chance to gain league experience. These players have now moved on and we wish them well in their future cricket careers and hope they enjoyed their time with us. This leaves the 2nds needing to recruit players and anyone interested can contact Simon Cope. We will once again have a Sunday team in the Mansfield league.
The junior section (boys & girls) is taking shape and parents who wish their children to be involved are more than welcome to come along to the indoor nets which will start in February (web site will give all information). From April practice/coaching nights at the ground will be advised on the web site. ST JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH CHURCH A Family Church For All Ages Wales & Kiveton Park www.stjohnschurchwales-kivetonpark.org Vicar: The Reverend Gary Schofield Tel: 01909 771111 Sunday Services: 9.15am Parish Communion 11am Family Service (2nd Sunday Monthly except June and August) 6pm Evening Service ‘The word was made flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth’ John 1 v 14 Reflections on my first 7 months in Wales & Kiveton Park Years of consideration and preparation led up to this day on 4 July 2010 at Sheffield Cathedral when I was ordained deacon, to serve as assistant curate in the parish of St John the Baptist, Wales & Kiveton Park. As you can see it was a day of great joy and celebration. On Monday 5th July I walked through the doors of Wales Church for Morning Prayer, not quite knowing who or what to expect, to begin my ministry here. For the first few weeks as I was introduced to so many people – in church, at funerals, at the Mothers Union, at Brownies, I felt very much like the new girl in a new job. But, for me, what I have entered into is not a “job” nor even a vocation or a calling. I think it is a door to a deeper sense of living, a “way” over which I have little control. Although I had spent a considerable part of my life moving around the country, I had forgotten what it was like to begin a life somewhere completely new but it has been a time of great discovery for me. The active worshipping community at Wales Church have been so welcoming and accepting of me, just as they are of everyone however confidently or tentatively they step over the threshold for a baptism, a wedding, a funeral,
a special service or a social event. During my first week, I attended the home communion service at Finningley Lodge which takes place once a month, and soon realised that that is just as much “church” as what goes on in the church building – friendship, fellowship and hospitality, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Working with Gary, a priest who has got himself known throughout Wales and Kiveton through a ministry of personal contact, relationship and acts of kindness, has made my introduction to life here not just easier, but has enabled me to see Christian ministry very much in action. Seeing the church so beautifully decorated for its Flower Festival in September by various church and community organisations, and then to see so many visitors appreciating its splendour, was a wonderful coming together of the beauty of creation and people enjoying themselves. An area in which I had little experience, but one

which plays a big part in the life of this community, is the relationship between the church and all the local schools. Soon after I arrived I found myself playing a small part in an “Open the Book” assembly. A small group of church members get together to act out stories from the Bible to pupils at Wales Primary, and Kiveton Infant and Junior schools, on a regular basis, and whilst the group enjoys acting out the stories, pupils seem to receive them enthusiastically too. It has also been lovely to welcome schools into church for Harvest Festivals, and to greet pupils from Wales Primary and Wales High School for church visits, as well as being made at home in the High School. There are many other aspects of life here I am taking part in and getting to know, and there is a growing depth of relationship. These aspects of life are not always joyous - they are sometimes frustrating, sometimes painful, but they are all definitely wonderful. VIRTUAL TO REALITY WITH ACTIVE REGEN Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust has been successful in their funding application to South Yorkshire Police’s proceeds of crime funding, to deliver positive activities for young people in the evenings. Active Regen will be delivering the NEW programme called VIRTUAL TO REALITY at the Old Colliery Offices. The Virtual to Reality programme is designed to utilise technology to initially engage players in a virtual sporting experience and then to provide an experience of that sport for real. The Virtual to Reality team aims to use technology to help people become more active. Using sport and physical activity software, the Virtual to Reality team will deliver group sessions and competitive events within an indoor community setting during the Autumn and Winter months. During the Spring and Summer months the activity will move outdoors where players can experience the games for real! Local partners including South Yorkshire Police have used the programme to help provide positive activities for young people, and the Sheffield PCT has commissioned the activity to use as a health improvement programme. The activities are FREE for all participants aged 7 and above and run from 5:00pm – 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening. KPWDT have just run a successful multi sports holiday programme in partnership with Active Regen at Wales primary school. The Sport England funded activities enabled over 60 young people to attend the sessions throughout the week. All the participants took part in a variety of multi sports activities and developed their practical skills and learned the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle. The sports participants played a variety of sports including hockey, football, athletics and dodgeball. We will be running another multi sports programme over the Easter holidays between the 11th and 15th April 2011, 10am – 3pm. sense of business and enterprise, resulting in a professional and enjoyable market for the rest of the school. Over £1000 was collectively raised from this event. A special celebration assembly will be held with presentations to the chosen charities at the start of next academic year. FASHION SHOW FUND RAISER
Year 12 pupils have worked together in their tutor groups to form mini businesses to raise money for local charities. Pupils work towards the Year 12 Young Chamber Award by completing two business and enterprise ventures. These chosen ventures are the Christmas Market and the Summer Fair.
During October, Mrs Newton and a group of Year 11 pupils organised a fantastic, prom themed, fashion show featuring live demonstrations. The aim was to raise money to pay for their Y11 prom that will take place during the 2011 summer term.
Despite the harsh weather conditions, the students worked hard to produce a range of stalls for the 2010 Christmas Market. These included a variety of festively decorated home bake stalls, raffles, popular Santa hats stall and a variety of festive themed games. Every tutor group presented their market stall with a real

Mrs Newton said “The evening was well supported by students and families and was only made possible by the hard work of all those involved. Our pupils worked brilliantly and professionally, they were all fantastic. It was a huge success as we managed to raise over £800!” “OLIVER!” Despite a postponement owing to the severe weather conditions, the school production of Oliver was absolutely stunning. The performances of the students were first rate and the support offered by the band, the lighting and sound technicians and the back stage crew was superb. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night out. Well done to everyone involved.
miss slinky is right on target Article by Suzanne Moyle What a difference a year makes! Last January, Joanne Hallam from Wales, joined Slimming World after seeing herself in photos from the previous Christmas and she was determined not to be the one hiding behind the cushions anymore. Now, not only is she 4 stones 11½ pounds lighter and maintaining her target weight, she has also been crowned as the Kiveton and Wales Group’s Miss Slinky! Suzanne, the consultant for the group explains “Slimming World’s annual Miss Slinky competition recognises members who have undergone a huge transformation by becoming sassier, more confident and who looks great in a party dress too and Joanne certainly fits the bill. We are all so proud of her and it’s great that she is still coming to group and inspiring the other members.” Joanne says “I couldn’t believe it when everyone voted me the group’s Miss Slinky and then a couple of weeks later I achieved my target weight! After years of not being happy with my size and getting bigger each year as well, I decided last year to join my local Slimming World group and it was the best decision I’ve made. I had tried dieting many times before, usually on my own, and I hardly ever used to keep it up for more than 6 weeks.” She goes on to say “I felt very determined and focused this time and with the new ‘Extra Easy’ plan, I couldn’t believe just how much food I could eat. The plan is just as it says – extra easy! I quickly began losing weight and can honestly say that I have never felt as though I have been on a diet. I have eaten loads of ‘free’ food every day as well as the healthy extras and then on top of all that I have even had chocolate and alcohol. I have tried loads of delicious recipes and all the family have enjoyed them so I haven’t had to cook separate meals for myself. One of my favourites is mango glazed chicken on a bed of roasted potatoes and vegetables. Before I used to avoid certain shops or styles because of my size, but shopping is so much fun now! My only regret is that I didn’t join Slimming World sooner.” Suzanne says Joanne’s efforts should make her a role model for other people in Kiveton and Wales. “There are 14.6 million overweight or obese women in the UK and that picture’s no different in our community, many people who live here are already obese and at risk of suffering from lots of different illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. I think that makes what Joanne’s achieved even more staggering. I hope she inspires lots of other people to improve their health by losing weight and shows them that whether you’ve got a little or a lot to lose slimming down can make a huge difference to your confidence and self-esteem.” KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

REDROAD FM As part of a bid to improve literacy levels of young people, Inspire Rotherham, a group commissioned by Yorkshire Forward, has funded Redroad to teach them radio communication skills in partnership with Redroad FM. Young people will be shown how to research information and then use the data collected to produce scripts for radio as well as how to operate broadcasting equipment, record interviews and present their own shows live on air. The innovative approach works with schools and local agencies to help reduce the number of local young people who are not in education, employment or training or who are at risk of becoming so. Trevor Grossett, Redroad Manager, says: “It is so important that we find new ways of reaching out to the hardest to reach young people and get them excited about learning new skills. I believe that this will help them to see what a great contribution they can make to the community”. The project has been running since October 2010.
FREE FENCING FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN Kiveton Park & Wales Fencing club is looking to grow it’s youth section and have started new sessions aimed at the younger members in the community. Coaching is provided and the sessions are tailored to meet the needs of children.
Forthcoming club events for all the family include a Treasure Hunt around Easter time and a Fun Competition and BBQ in the summer. More details to follow nearer the time.
New members of all ages are welcome too but if your children are at primary school, aged 8-11, or attend secondary school, aged 11-14, we are particularly keen to let them have a free taster session to see if they like this unusual sport. Both boys and girls are welcome, but they must be prepared to accept and respect the sport’s safety requirements and all coaching instructions.

KIVETON PARK & WALES SCOUTS GROUP Article by Sue Bass It’s One Hundred Years since Scouting started in Rotherham and we have a number of events taking place throughout the year to celebrate. One of our local Scouters has spent many hours putting together a book about scouting in Rotherham over the last 100 years. It is an informative read and there are even photos in of people you will recognize! The books are available from leaders at a cost of £5. As part of the celebrations there are 2 expeditions taking place in the district which some of the 11th Rotherham Scouts and Wales Explorers are taking part in... Romania a group of 8 Explorers plus leaders are spending a week hiking through Romania, in July, then stopping for a week to work at an orphanage. South Africa 14 Scouts/Explorers are off to Mossel Bay in South Africa for 3 weeks in April to work with the charity “Meet the People Cares” on a building project at a day care centre for single mums with disabled children. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures when they return.
As part of our centenary celebrations in Rotherham we have been challenged to raise as much as we can before the end of April for the Bluebell Wood Hospice, so if you see any Beavers, Cubs and Scouts out and about selling buns, washing cars etc then please give them your encouragement. We are very fortunate to have 2 scouting members from the local area taking part in the World Jamboree in Sweden. Richa and Peter Bass from Scouts have both been very busy attending training sessions and getting to know the rest of their Contingent. They have also been very busy fundraising as they each need to raise £2000 to go. Richard is currently selling some scrummy, organic damson jam at £2.50 a jar. Please call Sue on 01909 732862 if you would like some jam or if you have an outlet where you can sell some for him. This year the Beavers are celebrating their 25th birthday and have another badge to celebrate! They have also been set 25 challenges to complete in the year and have a big birthday party in March to celebrate. The Cubs are testing their knowledge for the annual Cub Quiz and the scouts are preparing for a 1st Aid competition. Some of the scouts recently took part in the NESST Challenge Walk at Walesby, navigating 11 and 18 miles through the night, without getting lost. Saturday 2nd April we are having a fundraising
event at Wales High School. Wrestling! Tickets will be available from leaders or by phoning 773053, £4 for children and £6 for adults. A fun night out for all the family. DUNKATHON – COFFEE MORNING How good are you at dunking a biscuit? Then come along to a coffee morning organized by scouting and guiding in the village, to raise money for the Meningitis Trust. Saturday 19th March, 10 – 12 am. If you don’t want to take part in the challenge then just call in for a coffee and biscuit. There will also be a very tempting cake stall and a raffle. ACTIVE KIDS VOUCHERS Sainsburys are issuing Active Kids vouchers until May. If you don’t know what to do with yours, please pass them on to us so that we can purchase new games and cooking equipment. CAN YOU HELP? Due to retirements etc we really do need to recruit some more leaders and helpers in to the group. Would you like to give it a try? Scouting is very rewarding and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as the kids. Whether you want to help with crafts and games with the Beavers (6-8yrs), cook with the Cubs (8-10yrs), learn First Aid with the Scouts (10 – 14yrs), or pot hole with the Explorers (14-18yrs), there is something for everyone. Even if you do not want to get involved, please help us by asking friends, neighbours and colleagues around you. Please ask them to get in touch with Sue Bass 732862.
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUTH “U COUNT 2” DROP IN CENTRE Congratulations to Kiveton Park Medical Practice on achieving the “You’re Welcome“ accreditation awarded by the NHS, this award is for offering a young people friendly service. This means a lot to the Practice as they are the only practice to achieve this award out of the 41 practices in Rotherham.

The service is a drop in service called “UCOUNT2” specifically for young people aged between 11 and 24 years of age, open Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 - 5pm offering all young people in the community a confidential approachable environment that meets their health needs in the newly refurbished building situated in the surgery grounds. was a very emotional evening and I think I can speak for everyone in saying we’re all proud to be a part of Wales Panto Players. The young ones in the chorus were an absolute delight both on and off stage and so enthusiastic about having a panto again next year.
Article By Brenda Bradley After a wavering start due to burst pipes in the chapel school rooms and having to find another venue for the rehearsals, then the flu appeared to sweep through Kiveton in January flooring a lot of the cast and community alike, the panto survived all the negativety and once again gave great pleasure and laughter to the audience. After the final performance, Roy Staniforth didn’t want to commit as to whether there would be a pantomime next year, saying that he didn’t know which one he would put on anyway. That’s all he said. Not that there wouldn’t be another one, but I can tell you there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and the standing ovation he got was tremendous. It

Wales Methodists continues and the Arts and Family services go ahead usually twice a month on a Sunday afternoon, always friendly with a humorous touch. The Mothering Sunday Service is already planned for 3rd April 2011 at 3 00pm and the Easter Day service at the same time on the 24th April. Showstoppers are now known as the “Wales Musical Theatre Company” and will be putting on another production at the Acorn Theatre, Worksop later in the year. We will keep everyone informed about the show together with the dates and times, in future editions of the “Kiveton & Wales Community Matters” magazine.

KIVETON COMMUNITY WOODLAND
Since the last issue of the Community Matters magazine, we have been subjected to a prolonged cold snap that saw Kiveton Community Woodland covered in a few inches of snow followed by a couple of weeks where the paths were so slippy they would have been perfect for hosting Dancing on Ice! Not so pleasant for us humans but nature is a lot more resilient and the blanket of snow provided some protection from the worst of the cold for the Snowdrops that started to flower as early as 10th January. All the ponds in the woodland have now thawed and, provided we have a mild spring, the wildlife that struggled through a dry summer last year should recover and thrive this summer. With so many events having been cancelled because of the wintery weather there is not much to report on activities in the woodland. The Nordic Walking sessions continue to be well attended and students from Rother Valley Campus have been doing some invaluable conservation work to improve the woodland for all. I regret that my hunch that I would need to start charging for events has proved correct. With effect from 1st April this year I will have to charge a fee for all Rangerled events. The exact details have not yet been finalised but posters advertising events will, in the future, contain details of costs.
KIVETON PARK & DISTRICT WOMENS CLUB Article by Margaret Gibson The Kiveton Park & District Women’s Club, affiliated to the North Derbyshire W.I Association have now been in existence for over forty years, and meet regularly, twice a month on Mondays 7:30pm at the Kiveton Park Cricket Club on Stone Close. They enjoy a varied range of events such as a knees-up’ or a Bingo evening, they also enjoy a day out every year, recent trips have included a visit to Goatland and Whitby, a 1940’s day at Buxton with a 1940’s meal, various stately homes, Cresswell Crags, York and many other places of interest, an evening’s sailing on the Trent which included a meal, a glass making establishment and not forgetting their Christmas Dinner at a local venue. Some

day workshops held by the South Yorkshire Association, where they have interesting speakers and demonstrations, and can try their hands at different things. Last year they attended a Japanese day, which was most interesting as they were shown how to do silk painting, making sun catchers, and in the afternoon the intricate art of wearing a Kimono was demonstrated to them, as each layer of material was wound and arranged painstakingly around the model, the ladies were told its significance and meaning, followed by a demonstration of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

A talk was held on the 7th February by local Kim Jurecki on the Derwent Valley Mills Archaeological Survey, as this was followed on the 21st February with another by Wendy Lawrence of NHS Rotherham on the NHS Summary Care Record, with other talks and entertainment following through the year.
Once a year, those members who so wish can also attend the yearly National W.I Conference, which are most enjoyable and interesting. The ladies thoroughly enjoy their every other Monday evening, and their numbers are once

DEVELOPMENTS AT THE OLD COLLIERY OFFICES think about. If you would like to join our next steering group meeting, have an input and be part of this exciting project then just give us a call. We were recently given an opportunity to visit The Hebden Bridge Community Trust (Hebden Bridge is apparently the funkiest town in Britain) to see the impressive work they are doing. This gave us both the opportunity to exchange ideas and plans are in place for them to visit us in the very near future. We are looking forward to a bright future down here at the Old Colliery Offices. Plans are at an advanced stage for us to take ownership of the building from Yorkshire Forward and now that our structural survey has been done, including the impressive plans drawn up by local architect Jonathan Hayward of Burnell Briercliiffe, our development and renovation feasibility study is now complete. A steering group recently met for the first time comprising of the Trust, Tennant’s of the Colliery Offices and local community groups, with every one making a valuable contribution, producing some exciting ideas and giving us all much to

The date likely to be in June is still to be confirmed but if you would like to be involved or would like to have a stall to display your talents, craft or handy work, promote your club, group or society then just give us a call. Our first round of classes here at the Old Colliery Offices have just come to an end. All of our classes such as Digital Imaging, Family History, Beginners Spanish and our Computing classes were all a big success, well attended and with everyone telling us how much they have enjoyed them. KIVETON PARK & WALES HISTORY SOCIETY Memories of Waleswood Hamlet Article by Mrs K Hall (nee Mallender) The area was at one time owned by the Coal Board and very rich in coal. It was mined at Waleswood Colliery and later at Brookhouse Colliery; coal was mined in the area as early as the 1700’s.
We have had a very interesting start to this year. Mr David Templeman was our speaker in January. David gave a very interesting presentation about Mary Queen of Scots, the Captive Queen. It was good to hear more facts about Sheffield Castle, I didn’t realise the remains of Sheffield Castle are under the Castle Markets building, I should have guessed, the name gives us a clue. However, as soon as the Castle markets are knocked down, the Sheffield Castle site will be excavated. Bricks!! What do you know about bricks, particularly bricks that may have been produced locally? Recently this brick was found by a person walking on the footpath from Nickerwood Farm to Hepworth pond. As you can see there is a K a crown P impressed on the brick, any information can be sent to us at contact@kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk. Another interesting item, one of our members wrote informing us that at some time in the past there used to be a 20ft Whale bone arch, similar to the one at Whitby, at the entrance to Wales Manor grounds. Has anyone any knowledge or better still any photographs of this whale bone arch, if so please get in touch with us.
I remember the general strike of 1926 and can vaguely remember people digging in the fields for fuel, owing to the shut down of all the mines in the area and no work available for anyone. There were about 10 houses and 6 farms in the area so there were plenty of green fields to play in during the summer and tobogganing in the winter. Everyone had an orchard as well as a smallholding, with a large garden, pigsties and henhouses. Most of the men worked as farm labourers, colliers, or on the railway. The women worked very hard as well, for the laundry there was a mangle, zinc tub and dolly bags. In the corner of the kitchen there was a copper boiler and the fire was always awkward to light. Of course there weren’t any shops or transport except for walking; there weren’t even any proper roads until the 1920’s.

I remember having to take the ‘order’ there on Saturday mornings, collect the bacon and butter, pay the last order we had, get a receipt for our payment which was marked with our Co-op shareholders number (our number was 136) and this with the ‘divvy’ stamps made a satisfying payout to help with Christmas when the divvy was paid. Our cottage was at the far end of the village, it had thick whitewashed walls and a thatched roof with one main room, two bedrooms and a cellar. There was a gate across the road where it ended; it then became a lane that was a shortcut to Beighton. Access was allowed 364 days a year upon payment of a toll at our cottage (thus we lived at Toll Bar Cottage). This shortcut to Beighton saved travellers going via Swallownest. The tariff for access was: Motors 6d, Cycles 1d, Gig, cart or carriage drawn by 1 horse 6d, each extra horse 1d. During WW2 open cast mining dominated the area, a vast amount of coal was mined and the area scarred for years.

THE CHESTERFIELD CANAL TRUST Article by Rod Auton We are coming up to an eventful Spring and Summer. On Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Monday 25th April, our tripboat, Seth Ellis, will be running 2½ hour return trips from Kiveton Park to the bottom of Thorpe Top Treble Locks at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. It will open next summer as a café and a community hub as well as our first ever permanent office. Look out for the Open Days which will probably be in July. The work on the new Staveley Town Basin has been delayed. It is now expected to start in March and be complete by mid-Summer.
