EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS ABOUT THE OLD COLLIERY OFFICES

OUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU

Chair of the Trust, Steph Hryschko, said “this is something we have been aiming towards for many years and there couldn’t be a better time of year for it to come to fruition. We have agreed to purchase the building for £1 and the transfer paperwork is now with our solicitors. There will be a covenant on the building and land that will mean it will only ever be owned or used for the benefit of our community. This means it can’t be sold for private profit and you will always be able to have your say in what happens to it. You can do this by joining the Board of Trustees, attending meetings, talking to staff & Trustees or simply completing the questionnaires which will be circulated.

Exciting developments about the Old Colliery Offices were revealed at the Annual General Meeting of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust on 24th November.

In anticipation of taking ownership, we were recently successful in our application for £20,000 of funding to do structural surveys and have architectural plans drawn up for the renovation of the building”.

The Trust has been negotiating with Yorkshire Forward and The Land Trust for some time to purchase the building for the community.

Members of the community were invited to the OId Colliery Offices to hear the news, view the plans, meet the architect and have their say.

Built in 1872 it became the first school in the village. Later, when the mine was sunk and the colliery opened, the Clock Tower building became the Colliery Offices and remained that right up to the time of the colliery’s closure in 1994. Since that time it has been owned by the Government Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, and managed, voluntarily, by Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust for the benefit of our community. With an application to Heritage Lottery and various other funders, we are hoping to do much needed repairs and transform this beautiful old building. Local architect Jonathan Hayward, of Burnell Briecliffe Architects, has been commissioned and has drawn up some exciting plans that will restore and enhance the building. These plans will undoubtedly bring the building into the 21st century, turning it into a major community centre and ensuring it is preserved for future generations. Jonathan, as a local, is very keen and sympathetic, along with the Development Trust, to preserve the undoubted character and architecture of this stunning old building.

THERE WILL BE A SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO COME ALONG, SEE THE PLANS, & MAKE YOUR COMMENTS & SUGGESTIONS:

JOHN WELLS It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Mr John Wells. John of Wales Rd sadly passed away in late October after a long illness. John was a colourful character, and a regular member and singer at the Kiveton Folk Club, from its early days in the Lord Conyers Arms in Wales to its present home. John also turned his talents to writing and penned The History of Kiveton a tongue in cheek humourous look at Kivetons History. The Owd Tup, The History of the Trysting tree and a delightful short story entitled Nancys little Hegehog. John will be sadly missed by all.

We are still taking enquiries for further commerative bricks for the Community Garden Gazebo. If you are interested and would like to buy a commerative brick then please give us a call 01909 773348 or e-mail: brendaandmark35@hotmail.co.uk PAGE 3

KIVETON COMMUNITY WOODLAND Article by: Dougie Mac Taggart, Forestry Commission Community Ranger 01302 820278

Following on from the Brass Band Contest in July, the Woodland hosted the Kiveton Urban Festival on Saturday 4th September. The event was organised by JADE, Kiveton Park’s very own social enterprise for young people, and included a sound-stage in the Amphitheatre featuring top DJ’s and MC’s from around the region, graffiti and urban dance displays, martial arts, gymnastics and free-running performances. There was even a couple of bouncy castles and a fairground ride for younger visitors to enjoy! In all, over 700 visitors attended the event and, except for the small number of people who flouted the “no-alcohol” ruling, all respected the woodland, behaved responsibly and left it as they found it including doing a litter-pick at the end of the event. In recognition of this, the Forestry Commission and The Land Trust are pleased to host next year’s Urban Festival which is programmed for Saturday 3rd September 2011.

Other organised events that have taken place on Kiveton Community Woodland recently include a Bushcraft session during which participants built shelters, identified wild-foods and toasted marshmallows on an open fire.

THE CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR SLIMMERS

salmon, melon or a low-fat soup eg. one thats tomato based rather than creamy. Take the skin off your turkey to reduce the fat and choose the light meat. Filling your plate with vegetables, sprouts and carrots will provide you with vitamin C, folic acid and carotenoids (antioxidants which protect against diseases such as heart disease) and choose boiled or dry roasted potatoes to reduce the fat content. Make your own low-fat stuffing and sauces. Decide before the meal which bits you really can’t miss. If it’s the Christmas pudding, custard and cream that you’ve set your heart on, make the most of it and savour each mouthful. Drink alcohol in moderation. Alternate

Article by Suzanne Moyle Christmas is traditionally a challenging time for slimmers who often put their weight loss plans on hold. But slimmers don’t despair – it is possible to enjoy the fun and festivities without being a party pooper. Suzanne Moyle, Slimming World Consultant for Kiveton Park, says: “People can easily gain half a stone over Christmas. As much as presents and parties, Christmas is all about food and drink! Christmas dinner is a special feast with lots of extra courses, and there is often plenty of chocolate, snack food and alcohol around. It’s also party season so we all drink more and become less active, for example, missing a regular squash game or session at the gym. If you’ve been losing weight all year it can be disheartening to regain weight over the festive season.“ She goes on to say “Slimmers needn’t beat themselves up. Slimming World’s research shows that flexibility is key to managing and avoiding yo-yoing weight gain and loss. Christmas is just one day of the year – it’s what you do every day that makes a difference to your weight. There’s no need to spoil your Christmas by feeling guilty about what you’re eating or worrying that you might lose control and overeat.” Eating a filling breakfast on Christmas morning will help stave off the urge to snack on chocolates or mince pies.” She suggests, “Start the day with scrambled eggs, grilled bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes, or a big bowl of seasonal fruit topped with very low fat yogurt or fromage frais. With a little imagination, your Christmas dinner can be delicious, filling and healthy too. Begin with a low-fat starter such as smoked

The 11th Rotherham Explorer Scouts did some scrub-clearing and night orienteering, Kiveton Park Infant School and Nursery completed their annual sponsored walk and the Campaign for Rural England’s Friends of the Peaks volunteer group took part in a scrub-clearing and bulbplanting event. The monthly Nordic Walking events continue to be well-supported in spite of the more recent sessions being carried out in the

dark and horizontal rain! There was also a very good turn-out for the Halloween Horrors event where the children got the opportunity to carve a pumpkin to take home with them.

As we approach the close of yet another year I would like to thank the people of Kiveton Park and Wales for taking good care of “your” community woodland throughout 2010 and making it such a pleasure for me to be “your” Community Ranger. I strongly suspect that I will be required to rein back on my spending next year and as a result I may need to find alternative sources of funding for events and maybe even charging an attendance fee to recover costs. Please believe that I will endeavour to keep the pain to an absolute minimum and hope to avoid charging at all. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. your alcoholic drinks with water or juice, use lowcalorie mixers or sparkling water when drinking spirits. After dinner take a walk or go to the park with your family. Every year millions of people make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. In fact, weight loss is the number one goal for 75 per cent of adults but most have given up by the end of the month. New Year can be a good time to make the decision to change your lifestyle and lose weight. But there are some common traps that people fall into. By being aware of these obstacles you can give yourself the best chance of a successful weight loss” advises Suzanne.

Tips to avoid weight loss traps: 1) Losing weight just because it’s January. Make sure your motivation to lose weight is more than just ‘because it’s the New Year’. Think about your reasons for wanting to lose weight. Making small changes that you are confident you can keep up will increase your chances of success 2) Going on a ‘fad’ diet. Following the latest fad diet or Hollywood craze may work in the short term, but these diets are usually very restrictive and impractical in the long term. They’re often based around extremes such as banning whole food groups or replacing them with liquid foods. This approach can lead to hunger and deprivation, which eventually causes the slimmer to lapse, binge, feel guilty and gain more weight than they’ve lost. 3) Going hungry. Slimming doesn’t have to mean starving. Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, encourages members to eat lots of satisfying and naturally low-fat foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and plenty of fruit and vegetables so they’re never hungry and it’s easy to enjoy all their favourite dishes like Spaghetti Bolognese, roast dinners and even chips. No foods are banned even chocolate, cheese and alcohol - so there’s no guilt or deprivation. 4) Setting unrealistic targets. Set yourself achievable short-term and long-term goals, such as losing 1-2lbs a week or losing a stone in a couple of months. Unrealistic targets will work to demotivate you and make you less likely to succeed. 5) Going it alone. Research shows that slimmers are more successful at losing and maintaining their weight when they have the support and advice of likeminded people in a group setting. Slimming World members share their ups and downs every week. Making small changes to your lifestyle habits can make a huge difference and it won’t take long for you to reap the benefits.

Wales High School

Romanian Mirsa High School Pupils Visit Wales High School During October, to mark the 20th anniversary partnership, Wales High School hosted pupils from our partner school, Mirsa High School,

in Romania for a one week programme which focussed on the theme of pilgrimages. It began with a visit to see “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in Nottingham. The students also had an insight into English history at Padley Chapel and into pre-history at Creswell Crags.

The weekend was spent at York on a variety of historical activities arranged by their hosts. A new element of the exchange was a residential visit to Criccieth in North Wales. On their return the students took part in a workshop which included a European quiz and presentations to a group of year seven pupils.

Student Council Are Top Dogs! Wales High School’s Student Council have recently won a ‘Top Dogs’ competition, ran by the Rother Valley South Area Assembly. Area Assemblies are a partnership of individuals, agencies and organisations working together to tackle local issues and to listen to local people. The game show styled event took place on Monday 11th October at the Dinnington Resource Centre. Ten pupil representatives took on the roles of various committee titles including Chair of Area Assembly, Environmental Officer, Detached Youth Worker and many others. Our successful Student Council enjoyed their trip to London on Wednesday 20th October where they met local MP Kevin Barron, had a tour of the Houses of Parliament and experienced how democracy worked in the heart of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. They also enjoyed a visit to the Big Ben tower to hear it chime close up and finished off eventful the day by a ride on the London Eye.

Sports Award Evening 2010 Celebrating a wide range of impressive and prestigious sports achievements, our pupils of all ages proudly received their trophies presented by Rotherham United Football Club players Ryan Cresswell and Tom Newey. Students Design Is Chosen By The Titans A ‘Smoke Free’ competition was recently run by Rotherham Healthy Schools. Wales High School took part in this competition with the whole of year 9. Prizes were presented for pupils who remained smoke free throughout the 12 weeks. A logo competition meant that all participating schools entered logos designed by their students. Well done to Rebecca Staniforth from Wales High School who won the competition. PAGE 6

Students Enjoy Their October Camp In Cornwall Once again, over 50 Wales High School students spent an absolutely great week down on the lovely Cornish coast, near Mevagissey during October half term. Travelling in 4 of our fleet of mini buses the holiday was spent in luxury caravans. There was a visit to Looe where Max Baird won the crab with the most legs competition - then on to Polperro, where uncharacteristically it did not rain! Once again, the trip to Eden Project was just amazing - the smell from the herbs in the Mediterranean Biome was wonderful. Students all made new friends and learned how to live with others. A great time was had by all. KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

LORD CONYERS MORRIS MEN Article by John Ledbury Lord Conyers Morris Men take their name from the Lord Conyers Arms in Wales, where they used to practice when they first came into existence in the early 1970s. They were originally made up of members of the Kiveton Park Folk Club, which used to meet at the Lord Conyers Arms, and held their practices in the upstairs function room before the folk club. The need for more space and more time led them to move to Wales Methodist Church Hall on a Wednesday evening, where they still continue to meet between 7.30 and 9.30 during the winter months.

Their repertoire includes Morris dances from the midlands and north west of England, sword dances from Yorkshire and Tyneside and the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance from Staffordshire. They can be seen dancing outside local pubs on Wednesday evenings in the summer as well as venues further afield, including trips abroad. Other regular appearances include May Day and Midwinter. We shall be celebrating the coming Midwinter with our annual Christmas Ceilidh at Creswell Social Centre on December 11th and our Wassail at the Duke of Leeds on December 18th, where we’ll be dancing and singing local carols from 2.00, followed at dusk by the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance on the site of Robin Hood’s Trysting Tree by the side of Kiveton Lane as it leaves Todwick.

WALESWOOD SPORTS CRICKET CLUB 2010 UP DATE 2010 has seen the club move forward in all areas which is down to the hard work put in by everyone involved with the club. The main aim of promoting junior cricket was attained by giving many juniors the opportunity to play league cricket. In the Bassetlaw league the 1st team captained by Simon Cope gained promotion to division 4 with a side consisting of five seniors and six players under the age of 21. The 2nd team finished a creditable sixth in division seven led by seniors Tim Marsh and Gordon Davis along with nine juniors many of them under 15 years of age. The Mansfield league Sunday team had an excellent season finishing in third place with again a mixture heavily weighted towards the junior section. Well done to all for their efforts on the playing side. The under 11 team had an excellent summer and the team consisting of three girls and five boys coached by Gary Lomas deserve credit for their efforts

OUT OF THE SHADOWS Article by David White a Kiveton Park resident. According to a recent lifestyle census, 70% of people said they believed in God. That’s almost three quarters of the population, quite staggering really as Christians aren’t exactly portrayed as the coolest dudes around. You can always rely on a Christian to fill the “loopy” role! Eastenders had the psychopathic Christian not to mention the mileage the writers got from Dot Cotton. Emmerdale has a vicar who’s had more wives than he’s had hot dinners and in the original film of “The War of the Worlds” the good old clergyman walks towards the Martian invaders with only an outstretched bible and gets zapped. All the Christians I know would have gone with

WALES PANTO PLAYERS Article by Brenda Bradley Once again our production of Showstoppers “ A Night of the Best Musicals Ever” at the Acorn Theatre in Worksop in September was a huge success. Anyone who joined us will know that it was a very good show and the feed back we received was that it was better than last years which can only be taken as a compliment as we got rave reviews last year. We ran for four nights this year and were fully booked every night. Several people who I never knew were in the audience stopped me to say how wonderful they thought it was, one gent saying “waiting for next years already”. Thank you to all our supporters. The clubs facilities have been updated with new practice nets and repairs to the artificial pitch. The coaching availability has been strengthened by two of the senior players attending a level 2 coaching course enabling the club to have four qualified coaches. On the social/fundraising side we have held a number of events which have been successful in attaining our aims of being a family club. Well done to everyone and many thanks for the support given by Stirling Commodities the Dinnington Resource Centre and Councillor Jennifer Whysall. at least a bazooka! There are cool Christians out there. How about Sir Cliff Richard? O.K maybe not the coolest dude around but at least this side of normal. There’s the Brazilian footballer KaKa and the survival expert Bear Grylles and we must not forget the band U2, much cooler dudes! For the intellectuals there’s C.S.Lewis. These guys aren’t famous for being Christians but for being mega talented and bringing joy to millions, even Sir Cliff. Christianity is similarly hidden in our communities. Where there’s social innovation there’s usually a Christian influence. In Dinnington there’s “The Roc Cafe”, a partnership of churches, schools and the police, providing a venue for young people to hang out resulting in a huge reduction in antisocial behaviour and crime. In Kiveton there’s a similar project called “JADE” and not forgetting the “messy church” where families can go and have fun in a safe, friendly environment. We as individuals can make a difference in

year was under the leadership of David Burgess and Victoria Taylor, we all felt the difference and benefited from their expertise, sometimes to the point of feeling worn out and near to tears having succeeded in putting the show on within nine weeks of beginning rehearsals. our communities by being more “righteous”, now there’s a religious word if ever there was one. Don’t feel intimidated, “righteousness” can be little more than being fair, honest, kind and decent - that’s something we can all be. In case you question the desirability of having “righteousness” in your community, consider the results if everyone were “righteous”. The rich would seek to help the poor, elderly ladies would be spoilt for choice as people queued up to help them across the road, companies would return profits to customers, people would trust government announcements, the police would have the best sports teams because they’d have nothing else to do, divorce courts would be empty and newspapers would go out of circulation because they’d have nothing to gossip about. Does that make righteousness worthwhile? It’s got to be worth a shot. Go on make a difference today.

and we’re still laughing. Hope to see you all at one of the three dates and thanks to all our friends for their continued support.

Our panto this year is “Sinbad the Sailor” and we will be performing this at the Montgomery Theatre, Surrey Street, Sheffield. The dates of the performances are Saturday 8th January and Friday & Saturday 14th & 15th January 2011, The Friday evening performance begins at 7:15pm Saturday matinee 2:00pm and Saturday evenings at 6:30pm . ST JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH CHURCH A Family Church For All Ages Wales & Kiveton Park www.stjohnschurchwales-kivetonpark.org Vicar: The Reverend Gary Schofield Tel: 01909 771111 Sunday Services: 9.15am Parish Communion 11am Family Service (2nd Sunday Monthly except June and August) 6pm Evening Service ‘The word was made flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and truth’ John 1 v 14 We love celebrating the birth of the baby Lord Jesus at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist. Our seasonal celebrations begin with our Christmas Carol Family Service on Sunday 12th December at 11am to which young and older are most welcome. On Friday 17th December at 7.45pm we play host to the splendid Killamarsh Silver Band who delight us with their annual festive fun filled concert. Tickets are available in advance or you can pay on the door. On Sunday the 19th we hold our annual Sunday School Nativity Play at 9.15am. It’s as traditional a nativity play as you can get. Full of children dressing up as angels,

shepherds, kings or even sheep! In the evening of the 19th we have our Carols by Candlelight Service which commences at 6.00pm. This is a service of traditional Carols and seasonal readings sung or read by the light of a candle and we anticipate the birth of Jesus the Messasiah. The true light who gives light to everyone. The choir begin proceedings with the traditional rendition of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and the service lasts around an hour.

Christmas doesn’t end there though! We have a family Communion Service on Christmas Day at 9.15am and children come and show us their presents as we remember the true meaning of Christmas and give thanks for the greatest gift of all - Jesus Christ. On Sunday the 26th December the three church cluster of Wales, Harthill and Thorpe Salvin gather at St Peter’s Thorpe to sing one song and break one bread as our celebration of Christ’s birth continues. Please consider including the Christ in your Christmas this year.

Christmas Eve is a special day as we prepare for the imminent arrival of the Christ Child. Our Christingle services are extremely popular. So much so that we have to have two! The first is at 4pm whilst the second follows at 5.30pm. It is a really intimate occasion for all the family as we gather together on a most holy night. All proceeds collected are donated towards the work of the Children’s Society. Christmas Eve ends with Midnight Mass at 11.30pm when we gather to sing carols and celebrate the birth of Emmanuel - ‘God is with us’.

ACTIVE REGEN SOUTH AFRICA TRIP Article by Sue Fletcher On the 29th of October, Active Regen travelled to Cape Town, South Africa along with four Rotherham Young Leaders – Ryan Town, Sam Carter, Bradley Yardy and Joel Murray – who were voted the best young leaders by their fellow peers, to deliver multisport sessions to the less privileged young children of South Africa. When the team arrived at The Willows School in Rondebosch and began the first session they were very pleased to see all the children working co-operatively and the amount of respect they showed towards the coaches and each other. More importantly they were very happy to see the children enjoying the sports they put on and you could see the gratitude on their faces and as

the day went on the team noticed how talented the children actually were at sports, particularly being of a young age. During the lunch the Active Regen team handed out ready prepared pack lunches to all of the children present. However at one point the team saw some had only eaten half their given food. Upon enquiry the team found out that the children were saving some of the food to share with their family later. Towards the end of the day, the team rewarded the children’s effort with reward certificates and the children then treated the team to a showing of their national anthem. It was described as a hair-raising experience to watch.

Throughout the trip the young leaders had excelled and showed everyone why they were picked as the four best Young Leaders. During the flight home the team had time to reflect on what had been a very enjoyable experience and were glad to use some of their coaching time on the less privileged children in a poorer part of the world.

Also throughout the week the team visited the local animal sanctuary and saw such animals as cheetahs and various birds of prey. They also visited the aquarium and the currently under construction Green Point stadium approximately worth £300m.

DECEMBER 2010

CONGRATULATIONS COLE! was in Swindon and again Cole’s hard work and determination paid off and they got the email they wanted - through to the final cut! The last trial was in Nottingham on Friday the 24th September and Cole knew this was it! Now down to the last 25 players, it really was his last chance to work for that prestigious place on the England team and play for his country in one of the most important hockey tournaments in the world for his age group. The following Tuesday, the email came, a formal headed letter from the EIHA (English Ice Hockey Association) with the first line being ...Congratulations! Cole has been selected to play for the England Under 13’s National Team 2010/2011. As you can imagine, the family were all elated and unbelievably proud!

A resident of Kiveton Park and a Year 8 pupil at Wales High School, 12 year old Cole Shudra has been plucked from the top 100 ice hockey players from all over the country in his age group, all vying for one of only 17 spots to play on the country’s National Ice Hockey Team - England under 13’s. Eldest son of the Sheffield Steeler’s own “Rocket Ron’ (who has coached Cole’s Sheffield team for the past two years) and mum Deborah are so proud of him and said ”It was a nail biting process as selected players are invited to attend England trials which can be anywhere in the country” Cole attended the first trial in August which fortunately wasn’t too far away in Manchester and was successful, the second again, fairly local at the Nottingham NIC and again, after fantastic effort and days of waiting with fingers crossed saw him through that one. The third trial

CHESTERFIELD CANAL TRUST Article by Rod Auton As always, things are busy on the canal. I hope that many of you managed to come to our Festival at Worksop in July. Despite unkind weather we had a good turn out to see 100 attractions. In September, our boat Seth Ellis that is usually based at Retford spent a weekend doing trips from the wharf by Kiveton Park Station. If you missed it this time, do not despair. We will be doing it again in April and September 2011, ring 01246 280660 or look on the website for details. We will be running our usual Santa Special trips in both Retford and Chesterfield for several weekends before Christmas. There will also be some midweek trips from Retford. For the Retford trips ring 01246 280660, for Chesterfield ring 01246 551035. If you venture to Hollingwood Lock, just the other side of Staveley, you will see lots of work going on. We are building an extension to the old Lock House which will open next summer as a café and a community hub as well as our first ever permanent office. (Well deserved after 35 years!)

As a result, Cole will be travelling with his England team to Quebec, Canada in February 2011 representing England in the 52nd Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. The tournament has been described as “the single most important minor hockey tournament in the world for young players aged 11 and 12.” There will be around 2300 young players from 16 different countries participating in the World Championships of Pee-Wee Hockey. Cole began his hockey career at the age of 5 with the Sheffield Junior Ice Hockey Club based at Ice Sheffield, progressing and playing with the Under 8’s, U10’s, U12’s and to his current U14’s Northern Division 1 team, the ‘Sheffield Stormers’, who are currently at the top of the league. Cole has won numerous medals and helped his team bring home numerous trophies both at home and internationally. His first international tournament took him to Geleen in Holland at only 7 years old, where his team, the Under 8’s came home champions! That taste of success was the springboard to his By the time that you read this, work on the new Staveley Town Basin will probably have started. It is due to be finished by the end of March. Our new Chesterfield Canal Visitor Guide 2011 is now out. Copies should be in local libraries. It is essential reading because it lists all the attractions, including details of pubs and fishing, near the canal. As I wrote at the start, things are really happening! The plans for the full restoration of the Chesterfield Canal were revealed at an illustrated public lecture in Chesterfield on 20th October.

determination and at 9, he was selected from trials to play at regional level, on the ‘Midlands Conference’ team. The regional teams are U11, U13, U15 and U17 where you can ultimately play for 2 seasons in each age group if selected. Cole was selected both years at U11 and travelled to Fussen in Germany both years, a fantastic experience both on and off the ice! He was selected the following year at age 11 to play in the U13 Midlands team which took him to Prague where they came home champions! Cole is currently trialling for selection to play his second year with the Midlands U13 team. So as Cole has worked and is working through the ranks in Junior Ice Hockey, enjoying club success and being selected at regional level, his dream of reaching that ultimate pinnacle - to be selected at National level, playing for England, has all come true and he’s not taking it for granted. The trials were tough and hard work, but he said “the hard work starts now, hard training and great teamwork will prepare us well for the tournament in Quebec. The standard of hockey there will be like none I’ve ever seen before and I can’t wait!” Cole and his parents are so overwhelmed by the support friends and family have given Cole to get him to Quebec. Pat and Doug West of Blind Beauty based in Kiveton Park (Cole’s Nannan and Grandad) have given him £500, The Bassetlaw Bandits based at The Station Hotel, Worksop have raised £200, Wales High School have awarded Cole £100, The Dronfield Supporters Club held a race night for Cole and raised £276 and Catherine Shaw of ‘Razors’ in Harthill gave him £50! Deborah & Ron said “This money will fund Cole’s trip which is fantastic as there is no alternative funding available at all, but what is even more fantastic is the thoughtfulness of people, going out of their way to help - we are so so grateful and just can’t thank everyone enough.” navigating through Killamarsh (where houses have been built on the original line of the canal) and how to get under the M1. Most interesting of all will be the solution to the problem of the Norwood Tunnel – nearly 1¾ miles long - which collapsed in 1907. There were also details of the new £310 million Waterside development in Chesterfield, to which the canal is key. For more information go to www.chesterfieldcanal-trust.org.uk; if you are interested in becoming a member of the Chesterfield Canal Trust email membership@chesterfield-canaltrust.org.uk or write to The Membership Secretary, Greenfields, Middle Handley, Sheffield, S21 5RN.

The Chesterfield Canal runs for 46 miles from the River Trent to Chesterfield. The 26 miles of the eastern end to Worksop have always been operational. 11 miles and 36 locks of the western end have been restored since 1989. Five of these miles are isolated in Derbyshire. Dr. Geraint Coles, the Development Manager for the canal, explained how to close the remaining nine mile gap between Staveley and Kiveton Park. This would enable boats from the River Trent to cruise into Chesterfield for the first time in over a century. Areas covered will include a new aqueduct across the Doe Lea Valley,

RACE FOR SUCCESS Article by Mark Hill After winning the 2009 British Minimoto Championship Josh “The Kivo Kid “and his dad Mark Hill decided it was time to move up a class for 2010 and contest the FAB Racing GP70 British Championship. This was run over 8 rounds travelling to tracks in South Wales, Northampton, Cumbria and Essex and considering this was Josh’s first year in the GP70’s and on a new and larger bike he came a very credilble 3rd overall. His dad Mark said “This was a very big step up from Minimoto to GP70’s but I know Josh has the ability and determination to succeed in this sport as he keeps himself very fit and is always switched on and focused when racing “ and with the invaluable help from Martin Bell of Crossroads garage Josh finished every race this year which is a major achievement in itself. In total this year in the GP 70’s Open Championship

DECEMBER 2010 Josh amassed six 4th place finishes, thirteen 3rd places, four 2nds and one race win. For an extra challenge Mark entered Josh in the last three rounds of the geared bike championship collecting two 5th places, one 3rd three 2nds and three race wins. Sponsors FAB Racing & Metrakit also organized a one off round on the Stowe circuit at Silverstone on the same weekend as the Moto GP back in June. As Team Hill set out to travel to Birmingham in Nov where Josh received his championship 3rd place trophy, proud father Mark said “ Its been a tough year on and off the track but Josh has got stuck in and rode an excellent season, I couldn’t have wished for anything more”. For 2011 Team Hill have decide to go big time and step up again into the Aprilia Superteens Championship using the ex Chrissy Rouse Championship winning RS125 machine (pictured at Crossroads Garage ) This is run over 10 rounds by Thundersport GB where the likes of Moto GP’s Casey Stoner, Bradley Smith and Cal Crutchlow all started out. Racing will take place at tracks including Mallory Park, Donnington, Sneterton and Brands Hatch and you can catch it all on Motors TV, Team Hill are very much looking forward to the challenge hopefully taking

KIVETON & DISTRICT WOMENS CLUB Article by Margaret Gibson The Kiveton District Women’s Club is a thriving club which was started by a group of young mothers in 1969. Some of them had attended School together and remained friends into adulthood. The founder members were Mrs Stephanie Bidwell, Mrs Mary Havard, Mrs Sylvia Swift and the late Mrs Margaret Pearson who were soon joined by other like minded young women. They first started meeting in the old Festival Hall their numbers grew to 76 members and they formed a committee, started hiring speakers on diverse subjects and eventually applied to join the National Association of Women’s Clubs, joining the South Yorkshire branch. Their next move being to start attending the yearly Conferences and later joining the North Derbyshire Association, but still keeping their friendship with South Yorkshire which continues to this day. Branching out, they organized a choir, eventually it grew large enough to stand on its own feet, so to say, and formed a separate unit, though some years later it folded, but many of the former Women’s Club members returned. Their next venture was an entertainment group where they learned to tap dance, which was a

sight to behold as most of them were in their 40’s or even older! They soon discovered that their fame had preceded them and found they were being invited to entertain other groups including Senior Citizens in other areas. They were also invited to entertain the delegates at conferences with their wide repertoire which was well received wherever they appeared. They still visit other clubs in the Association who visit them in return, enjoying dances, quiz nights and other entertainments with other club’s members. They also enjoy a yearly day school, where they have learned the rudiments of silk painting, decoupage, drawing, painting, poker work and many other pursuits. They used to run a cake stall when the Kiveton Carnival was still taking place but now attend the Harthill Carnival with their Tombola and books stall, some of the proceeds going to charity. Over the years, they have led a somewhat ‘Gypsy style’ existence, moving from the Festival Hall to St John’s Rooms then into the top room at The Forge. Again their fortunes improved which meant another ‘flit’, this time to the old CLOC building until they were evicted when it was sold to be developed for the new village post office. Next they managed to get accommodated at the Kiveton WMC on Station Road. Their next move, was to the Kiveton Park Cricket Club on Stone Close where they are still in residence. They meet on average twice a month on Monday evenings at 7.30 pm for which there is a small admission to help pay for the room and buy essentials. The NAWC is a registered charity,

Josh to further success. Over the winter months Team Hill will travel to Spain to carry out tests on the new RS125 Bike in readiness for the first round of the Championship at Mallory Park on the weekend of 11th to 13th of March and you can keep up to date with all the latest info on Team Hills progress on their website www. teamhill.weebly.com. and as such has to be self-funding, as well as raising money for other charities, Guide Dogs for the Blind, equipment towards a new unit at the Worksop Hospital, Alzheimer’s, Safe at Last and many other local charities. They used to hold twice yearly Jumble Sales in St John’s Rooms until age and other circumstances forced them to stop, but twice a year hold a Bring and Buy amongst themselves and a Good as New evening, when many bargains are to be had. Their meetings re-started after the summer on the 7th September, followed on the 20th September with a talk by Author Stephen Gay on “Walking the Line - Discovering Lost Railways”, fund raising evening was held on the 4th October in aid of “Help for the Heroes” and on November 1st a talk was held “In Search of my Mother” by Mike Gildersleve. Various speakers have taken them on ‘trips’ to the Galapagos Islands, Thailand and a gentleman who rode a motor bike around the world spoke of getting stranded in the Far East for a while writing about his adventures! They will hold their Christmas Party on 6th December, their last meeting of the year, but will enjoy the North Derbyshire Christmas Concert at Markham Hall, Stavely on the 9th, when they will be the hosts and will be entertained by J. J. Galway, guitarist and singer. Meetings will re-start on the 10th January, when existing and new members will be welcome to attend at 7.30 pm. horse pass wind cried “ Mek it f**t agin missis”, much to the riders embarrassment. Dr Mackenzie eventually decided he needed to learn to drive and employed Mr Unwin to both give him lessons and to act as his chauffeur. On passing his test he then bought an additional identical car and used one for business and one for pleasure.

Article by: Ken Chapman & Marie Godfrey There has been a doctor’s practice in the villages of Kiveton Park and Wales since before 1900. Evidence from a Kelly’s Directory in the 1890’s lists a Dr Hill practising in the village. It is highly probable that the philanthropic Kiveton Coal Company engaged him as they had already built over one hundred houses at Hard Lane and at both Dawson and Carrington Terrace to house the miners employed by the company. The company had also built a school for the community on Station Road, which opened in 1874, having initially allowed the children of their employees to use the pit offices as a classroom. A second physician called Dr. Saunders was also in practice from around 1900-1927. He had a surgery at the rear of where the Wales Jubilee Club now stands. After the Second World War and the retirement of Hill and Saunders the villages saw the arrival of Doctors Baker and Mackenzie.

Red Gables Dr Baker was to build the splendid house opposite the entrance to Stoney Bank Road called Red Gables and Mackenzie built Beechcroft (now the Little Explorers day nursery). Surgeries were held at both houses with the doctors themselves dispensing any prescribed potions. Many villagers will remember the frightening sight of two African spears mounted on the wall of Dr Baker’s surgery. When Dr Mackenzie first arrived in the village he set up a surgery in the first house on Colliery Road after having probably been engaged by the Colliery owners. Somewhat of an eccentric, he was unable to drive yet owned one of the few cars in the village and employed the services of Jack Unwin, father of Rowland Unwin as his driver and fee collector. His wife owned a beautiful chestnut horse and would regally ride, side saddle, through the village. As she passed by men would respectfully stand to attention and doff their caps. Some children, however, could not resist being mischievous. Legend has it that one youth on hearing the

Dr Kenneth Mackenzie was a close personal friend of my parents and the reasons for my brother Roger studying to become a doctor and my being given my Christian name. My mother was his midwife for many years and our home was “open house” on a Sunday morning when he would pay his weekly visit for his “wee dram”. There were two doors leading from our living room on Wesley Road. One led into the kitchen and to outside and the second opened into the pantry. As my father purposefully kept him in conversation, Doctor Mackenzie seemed to always depart each week into our pantry emerging, totally confused, muttering his apologies. Dr and Mrs Mackenzie had three children called Jean, Nancy and Muriel. Jean the couple’s eldest daughter, also became a doctor, studying in the same year as my brother at the University of Sheffield. Dr Baker’s retirement brought Dr Jago to the village in the-mid 1930’s. As war loomed Dr Isaline, joined Mackenzie. As a German Jew, she had escaped the Nazi tyranny and fled with her child to England, only to be interned at the outbreak of the War. On her arrival in the district she lived in Firvale, Harthill before moving to one of the villas on Wales Road. Brenda Bradley recalls in her book “Growing up in a Beautiful Enviroment” a story she was told by her cousin Mary Wainscoat about Dr Isaline: “When she was about twelve or thirteen her Dad asked her to take some vegetables, which they had quite a lot of, down to Woodall to sell, transported in a pony and trap. When they pulled up at Woodall a couple who were out walking asked Mary could she point them in the direction of Kiveton. Mary sent them on their way but noticed that the lady had a German accent. After they set off she turned the pony and trap around and galloped, hell for leather, back to Harthill and straight up to the policeman’s house because she had worked out that they were German spy’s who would probably be on their way to blow up Kiveton Park Colliery. It turned out that the lady out for a walk was Dr Isaline!” With the War ended Dr Mac, as he was affectionately known, expanded his practice. He was joined during the next twenty years by Dr Ferguson, (who lived in one of the houses next to the Coop on Wales Road and played football for the Kiveton Park Colliery Football Club), Dr Rowlands (who later became his son in law), Dr Imre (who married a local girl called Betty Chisholme), Dr McKinnon and a young Dr Collington.

Dr Collington’s exploits are legendary both on and off the cricket fields of Kiveton and Harthill and also at Worksop Golf Club where he was a member. A former “Bevan Boy” he became a favourite of his patients and a close friend. He also blamed me for breaking his finger when he was fielding in the gulley for Harthill in one of the “Derby” matches against Kiveton Park. He dropped the catch much to Geoff Bennett’s displeasure! Tony’s examinations were never the same again! In 1959 Dr McCloughlin joined the practice after the retirement of Dr Mackenzie. The good doctor and his wife had bought a house in Little Kimble in Buckinghamshire and moved south. Dr McCloughlin and his wife Jean lived on Red Hill before buying Red Gables after Dr Jago’s retirement. Their family became pillars of the community taking an active roll in Kiveton Chapel where Derek occasionally preached and where both he and Jean sang in the choir. Derek was an avid follower of Yorkshire cricket and was also made President of the Colliery

The Beechcroft Cricket Club. In the late 1960’s a move was made away from Beechcroft to a larger surgery on Walesmoor Avenue. Doctors Kutty, and Taylor joined Doctors Collington and McCloughlin and Mousley at the new premises. Dr Mousley and his family moved into the vacant Beechcroft. When they left the practice the property was converted into a guesthouse. In 1986 Dr Say arrived, and in 1989 was joined by Doctors Reid and Wallis after Doctors Collington, Kutty, Mousley, and Taylor had all left the practice. Dr Susan McCloughlin joined her father and the team at Walesmoor Avenue from 1990 to 1994. Dr Hopkinson also joined the practice but stayed for only a short time. Dr Tooth then joined during 1994. 1995 saw the retirement of Dr McCloughlin and the development of the plans to build the present Primary Care Centre. The Primary Care Team first used the new building from January 1997 and it was officially opened by Lynda Shelton B.A. J.P on 11th February 1998. Since that day the practice team has been augmented by the addition of Doctors Thorman (1998), Speight (2000), and Dr’s Andrew and Mary Grafton in 2001 and 2003 respectively. If anyone has any further information regarding the Kiveton and Wales Medical Practices please contact the Kiveton and Wales History Society on 01909 773712 Or contact our web site on kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk
