Tel: 01909 770007 It has taken such a long time and so many problems along the way that we thought it might never happen! At last the garden gazebo is complete and the official opening is planned for 5.30pm on Tuesday 22nd June. The building will be opened by World Superbike Champion James Toseland and the Deputy Mayor of Rotherham Shaun Wright. Reverend Gary Schofield, Vicar of St John the Baptist Church will bless the building. We welcome all the families and community groups who have a dedicated brick to attend on the evening, then there will be a celebration Open Day for all the community on Saturday 26th June from 11.00am. This will coincide with the start of The Barnado’s Big Toddle, which we are also proud to host. The garden, like any garden, is an “ongoing project” and your ideas for it or time spent in it will always be welcome. You may want to bring a shrub to plant with a dedicated plaque or a bench where you can sit and spend some quiet time. Some people have offered to plant up and donate hanging baskets, others have helped to lay pathways, for example. Kiveton & Wales Pre-School Daycare will once again be taking part in the Barnardo’s Big Toddle. This event brings together families and friends to help raise money for the vulnerable, abused, forgotten and neglected children that
The toddle will be taking place this year on Saturday, 26th June at 11am as part of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust Open Day event with all children doing the toddle receiving a medal and certificate when finished.

Article by: Keith Stone What are you growing in your garden this year, beans, parsnips, carrots or leeks? Well apart from all those this year I have Mallard ducklings growing in the garden. I hadn’t even seen mother duck building the nest. I just spotted her going under one of the shrubs in the back garden and went down to see what was happening. By this
A couple of days later it was like Merrill’s Marauders as 15 ducklings fanned out across the lawn. A couple of days later we were down to 14 ducklings. To be honest I didn’t have a clue what to do about these ducklings, the garden is completely fenced in so there was no chance

that mother duck would lead them to the pond. So I have put water and feed out for them and they are doing well and seem to be keeping my vegetable garden free of slugs and snails. Hopefully in the near future mother duck will lead them to the pond by coming through the garage and up the front drive.

FUTURE JOBS FUND Article by Steph Hryschko Chair of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust Tel: 01909 770007 Whatever your political persuasion, it has been an interesting few weeks in Westminster and we are all left wondering how the inevitable changes will affect us. I just want to pass comment on what, I believe, has been one of the best and most sensible Government initiatives in terms of helping both individuals and communities in decades. “Future Jobs” was introduced last year to pay young people six months minimum wage for working within community or voluntary organisations instead of receiving Job Seekers Allowance. If I have any criticism it is that it could have been opened up to all unemployed of any age although I do understand that the Government wanted to prevent a new generation of young people being long-term unemployed. Why is it so good? The young person: ● Has a reason to get out of bed in a morning and get into a work day routine ● Gains a sense of self worth & confidence ● Gets support and training to learn new skills ● Has a better CV and is more “work ready” for potential future employment. The Community: ● Has work done that was previously unfunded
● Has young people with a greater sense of community value because they have worked for it – a great investment for the future What are they doing for the Community Trust? Take a walk down to the Old Colliery Offices and the first thing you will notice is how much better the grounds are looking, thanks to Josh Dart employed as Grounds Maintenance Worker. The success of the session has led to two more visits being planned for the next year. “It was wonderful to have such a positive response from Sixth Form students and staff for a very worthy cause” Mrs Hawes, PSHE Coordinator.

Year 11 Lifeskills students were lucky enough to have a day working with a local 3D graffiti artist, Simon Kent. The sessions took place at Wales High School’s Vocational Academy at Vector 31. The students spent all day creating graffiti in concrete blocks. The sessions were enjoyable and the end results very impressive.
SIXTH FORM POLITICAL DEBATE Pupil political party representatives went head to head with their version of the live debate during the final week of the General Election 2010. Supported by their local candidates, the representatives were challenged with an array of questions from an audience made up of staff and sixth form pupils. Adam chaired the debate and kept everyone in order throughout. Bringing the debate to a close, Adam asked the audience to vote for who they would like to see representing their local government this time round. Dominic, representing Labour, won the majority of votes. “It shows how politics can engage younger generations and enthuse pupils to go and vote.” - Charlotte.

AMBASSADOR LOPEZ VISIT Ambassador Lopez from Paraguay visited Wales High to support the school’s partnership with Colegio Aula Viva. He promised the Embassy’s full support in building up the partnership which has been in existence since 2004. The school will also support the Ambassador’s attempts to open a British Council office in Paraguay.
Alexandra Bermange is a highly talented and prestigious composer, regarded in great esteem by many key figures in the world of Musical Theatre. After his success with Walking on the Sun, he was commissioned to write another musical that involved local education. Wales High School and Rotherham Music Service were chosen for the showcase. Joining the students were a small group of professional singers.

IT’S SHOW BUSINESS WITH A DIFFERENCE! The Flying Theatre Company performed ‘Romeo et Juliette – Reviste’ to one hundred and fifty pupils who study French at Wales High School. WALES DONATE BLOOD The aim of their performance was to inspire pupils of all abilities and provide them with an alternative learning environment in a light hearted and easy to understand manner. Lasting for an hour and fifteen minutes, the actors delivered Shakespeare’s famous story by using a variety of

The main strand of the story concerns a love triangle between a Cuban girl, an American spy and a Russian officer. This story runs parallel to the political developments in the early 1960’s involving Presidents Kennedy, Khruschev and Castro. The Cuban Missile crisis of 1962 was the closest the world has ever come to full scale nuclear war. The show was impressively produced using industry sound and lighting that provided pupils with a real professional stage show. It was an outstanding performance all round.

Article by: John Leaver JADE Tel: 01909 515912 This year Discreets Urban Dance Academy is moving from strength to strength. They have been successful in securing funding from UNLTD Sports Relief to develop a state of the art dance school above the JADE young people’s drop in
Meanwhile, Discreet are still delivering activities from Kiveton Park youth and community centre and are seeing attendances of up to 100 young people per week aged from 4-18. Once again they will be holding a yearly show at the Montgomery Theatre in Sheffield on the 11th of September. The group will be performing to well known modern songs alongside a number of classics in a Back to the Future themed performance. JADE have a number of activities planned for young people over the summer break alongside their regular drop in provision. The young people’s drop in centre on Wales rd is seeing around 50 young people attend every night providing much needed activities for young people within the community. They will be holding a week long summer school at Dinnington Youth Centre for young people over the age of 8 where young people can try their hand at street dance, graffiti workshops, sports, arts and music. ARE YOU A PARENT OR CARER OF A CHILD WITH AN ASD? Article by: Cindy Gregory, FISH Tel: 0788822000 Are you a parent or carer of a child on the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? Do you sometimes feel that you have no one to talk to or nowhere to go for help and advice? Then you will be pleased to know that there is a group, now established in the Kiveton Park and Wales area, where over a cup of tea or coffee you can chill and chat. The group called “FISH” which stands for “Friends, Information, Support & Help” has been established since March 2009.
The group meets once a school term at the Sue Walker Centre, in Kiveton Park, with the support of the centre and qualified professionals from Wales High School. We are able to offer a Crèche facility, in order for parents to have a break. The children are stimulated through play and team games, all of which a child with an ASD may find difficult as their social skills can be less than that of their peers. We are endeavouring at each meeting to have a speaker, in order to share useful and much needed advice.
Originally the idea of professionals from Rotherham Borough Council who work closely with children with a diagnosis or in the process of being assessed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, it was felt that no local support was available and so the group was formed with their first meeting in March 2009.
At our last meeting on the 17th March 2010, our speakers were from the Families Information Service and Kiveton Park Advice Centre. The meeting was well attended, with many questions and up to date advice given on current legislation.
Now jointly run by professionals and parents, the group is steadily growing. It is a chance for parents to sit together and discuss their experiences and day to day problems, to share ideas and strategies in dealing with daily routines.
At each meeting we have various professionals on hand to give advice. These include an Educational Psychologist and members of the Autism Communication Team who cover the Wales Cluster of Schools.
Our next meeting is on Monday 14th June 2010, at the Sue Walker Centre in Kiveton Park, the meeting begins at 4.15pm and runs through until 5.45pm. Our topic for the meeting will be “Adolescence and Puberty”. If you wish to join us and require a crèche place then please contact the Sue Walker Centre on 01709 336366. The group is self funding and voluntary, so if you feel that you can offer help and advice on raising funds or have any ideas for future meetings, then please contact Cindy Gregory on 07788822000. Many parents feel isolated and alone when their child is diagnosed with an ASD, but you are not alone, come and join us, have a laugh and feel at ease with people who understand what you are going through.
MISS SOUTH YORKSHIRE 2010 WINNER Article by: David Cunliffe Former Wales High School pupil Olivia Cunliffe (20), a Nursing Assistant who hopes to work as a children’s nurse, scooped the coveted Miss South Yorkshire 2010 crown in April at Doncaster Racecourse at the South Yorkshire regional heat. Olivia will now go forward to participate in the Miss England competition taking place in London in July, following in the footsteps of Rotherham’s Jaime-Lee Faulkner in 2009. Jaime-Lee went on to achieve sixth place in the Miss England 2009 finals. In all, ten gorgeous girls from South Yorkshire lined up at Doncaster Racecourse, reaching the final heat from 65 entrants - all vying to represent the sub region, presenting the judges on the evening and the text voting public with a real challenge! Epworth (near Doncaster) girl Stefanie Rycraft-Jones (22), a BA (Hons) graduate who works freelance in creative marketing and design and who is carving a career in modelling was awarded second place and the third place winner was Elkie Chapman (21), a Media Studies student from Rotherham. REDROAD FM LAUNCH Article by: Trevor Grossett Redroad FM is a Rotherham based community radio station which broadcasts on 102.4 FM, specialising in current popular music genres and chart hits throughout the day. Redroad FM provides alternative genres after 7.00pm including electronic dance, soul, folk, rock or jazz. It is aimed primarily at the 13–25 age group, although due to the alternative genres and interview content we expect the average age of listeners to be quite a bit older.
Hussain MBE was the first to be interviewed on the station. Mahroof whose work includes, strengthening and uniting communities across Rotherham, officially endorsed the radio station live on air. Redroad FM was launched at 12.00noon on 27th March 2010 as a direct response to the popularity of Redroad FM short broadcasts that have occurred on several occasions since the first broadcast in 2000. The launch was attended by the Mayor Shaukat Ali and Mayoress Wajida Naseem of Rotherham, borough-wide and parish councillors, RMBC staff and last but not least members of the local community including young people. The first DJ to broadcast on the new station was Aaron, a Year 10 student from Wales High School. The first record Aaron played said it all really, the track is called ‘Beautiful Day’ by U2. KIVETON PARK AND WALES FENCING CLUB Article by: Peter Ellingham Simon Eggleton of Kiveton Park & Wales Fencing Club entered his first fencing competition, the Sheffield Novice Foil on Sunday 28th February 2010 at Hoyland Sports Centre. After 2 rounds of pools Simon was seeded 1st for the knock out part of the competition. Simon fought his way through to the final to meet the 2nd seed, Twin Kharmakharm of Sheffield Sword Club. The fight went into the final 3 minute period and the scores reached 14 each, leaving the result of the competition to be decided by the final hit of the day. After a few feints by each fencer, Simon made a concerted attack which was parried wide of the target and Simon was hit by the following reposte of his opponent. The Parish Church is the oldest building by far in these parts. God has constantly been worshipped on this sacred site since before the Norman Conquest C11. We have the privilege of continuing that tradition of prayer and hospitality today. We are a friendly community committed to maintaining our building, it’s life of worship and proclaiming the good news of God’s love through his son Jesus Christ. The church is a house of prayer and is open for people to come and explore its history or to just spend some quiet time with God. There is a regular Sunday School which meets each week at 9.15am and we are always delighted when people approach us to celebrate those special moments in their lives such as baptisms and weddings. Many people also turn to us at the saddest moments at the farewells of loved ones. The church is here for the people of this Parish in all the seasons of living.

HOW HIGH WOULD YOU GO FOR SOMEONE WITH CANCER? Article by: Andrea Marshall Tel: 01909 773348 Built from 220 BC onwards, the Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive and longest man made structures in the world. The wall is often believed to be one long single structure but in actual fact it’s comprised of a selection of smaller walls built by different emperors with different materials and building styles. Originally formed to defend China from nomadic tribes, the wall now stands as a tribute to the Chinese expertise and ingenuity. Some sections are well maintained tourist attractions whilst others have succumbed to nature and either worn away or become buried beneath the desert sands. The Simatai section in Miyun County, built on the blade of the mountains, is known for its steepness, beauty and authenticity. The original watch towers have stood their ground with Mother Nature and remain as impressive landmarks across that stretch of wall. In September, this is where you’ll find a selection of brave and daring individuals who are taking on the challenge of the Great Wall in aid of Marie Curie. Amongst those people include local girl, Sarah Croft. Their challenge starts with a 7 hour trek to the peak of Mount Simatai followed by another 7 hour trek through the Jin Shan Ling section to Erlaingzi. From here they follow local tracks on a 6 hour trek to Gubeikou before a final trek into Hebei Province. It sounds simple, but when you take into account the 4000ft climbs through woodlands, brick obstacles, vertical walls and sheer drops, the trek suddenly sounds a lot more terrifying. The fear of heights is one challenge Sarah is

New mum, Wendi, has been a member of slimming world since November 2007 and before getting pregnant had lost 3 stones 6lbs. “I gained the consent of my midwife to continue to attend Group as I didn’t want to fall into the trap of eating for two” says Wendi “She advised which foods to avoid such as raw or partially cooked eggs and soft cheese but this still left plenty of food which I could eat on the food optimising plan. It was important for me to still attend group because I know that if I wasn’t aware of how much I was gaining, I would find it even harder to go back and lose the baby weight.” Slimming World works closely with the Royal College of Midwives and is the only weight management organisation which allows

After losing her grandfather to a brain tumor and her grandmother to terminal cancer, Sarah and her family sadly discovered the work of Marie Curie once it was too late. They soon realized how valuable the Marie Curie nurses are to patients with terminal illnesses and how different their story could have been if they had had the support their family needed in their darkest times. Following their family history, Sarah too had a cancer scare last year which gave her the motivation she needed to do something whilst she still has good health on her side. She had the choice of local events such as fun runs or bike rides but soon accepted the much greater challenge of trekking the Great Wall of China instead, the first step being the fear of flying! Not too long ago walking her dogs around the Kiveton Woodland was a leisure pursuit, now she trecks the hills of wider South Yorkshire to train for what will be a life changing experience, both physically and mentally. So far, Sarah has raised an impressive £600 (and a pair of Magnum boots) but this is a long way off her target of £3000. Marie Curie provide valuable care to patients with terminal cancer and other life limiting illnesses. A whopping 70% of its income comes from generous individuals either through sponsoring

Spring is here and the wildflowers “promised” in Issue 26 have put in an appearance. As well as those that bloom without our intervention, some of the bulbs planted by Kiveton Park Infant School in November last year have flowered. Specifically there have been a handful of snowdrops, plenty of daffodils and, at the time of writing, two bluebells! These and all the other flowering plants on Kiveton Community Woodland provide much-needed nourishment for the early bees and butterflies that are awakening after the cold winter. Tadpoles are plentiful in the ponds and ditches around the woodland and birds, reptiles and mammals are all indulging in their prime objective of reproducing. People using the woodland for recreation also appear to have come out of some winter-induced torpor and have a newly found spring in their step. The changeable weather has caught some out though and the Benidorm inspired t-shirts have given way once again to “layering”. Very wise! Although Buggyfit numbers are well down and the Easter Eggstravaganza event did not attract many takers, the Nordic Walking session in mid-April enjoyed a good turnout. Opinion will be canvassed and, if the uptake is positive, it may be possible to have more sessions in the near future. The other good news is that the second Kiveton Park Brass Band Festival, which takes place in the woodland on Sunday 18th July 2010 starting at 11am, has already attracted entry from twelve bands and registration is now closed. Entry to the event is free although there is a car parking charge of £3 per car. Please come along and enjoy a unique event in the open-air that takes place one week after the World Cup 2010 has finished. Who knows, it may be the perfect occasion to continue the celebrations! Article by: Betty Quinton Kiveton & Wales History Society In the 1860’s Kiveton Park was becoming a very important village. A new colliery was being sunk bringing hundreds of new jobs and people to the area. Some years earlier in 1834 the Houses of Parliament in London had burned down and the whole country had been searched to find the best stone available for the new building. This was found to be at North Anston in quarries belonging to the Duke of Leeds. The quarried stone was brought to Kiveton Park station and there loaded onto barges. It was then transhipped by canal to London and up the river Thames to build the new Houses of Parliament. At this time a young man called William Henry Blackwell came to Kiveton Park from Derby to work at the new colliery. He was a single man and found lodgings with Mrs Lucy Turner of Kidd lane, now renamed Orchard Lane at Wales. William was a very hard worker and when he had finished his shift at the new colliery he found himself another part time job. The barges fetching the stone from Kiveton Park station came from London with a load of pig iron bound for Chesterfield; on the return journey they collected the stone at Kiveton Park. On their way to Chesterfield the barges had to travel through the Norwood tunnel on the canal. This stretched from Kiveton Park to Norwood and was nearly 3,000 yards long. It was one of the longest canal tunnels in the country. Horses normally pulled the barges but they were of no use in the tunnel as there was no towpath underground. Men were employed to ‘leg’ the barges through the tunnel. ‘Legging’ involved a man laying on his back in the barge and walking it along the tunnel roof. Apart from being an unpleasant job it was very hard work and an uncomfortable position to keep the barge moving. This was the part time job that William Henry Blackwell took on board. He ‘legged’ the barges which were known as ‘cuckoos’ from Kiveton Park station to Norwood through the tunnel. It was very tiring work but fortunately for him the Angel Inn was situated where it is today at the end of the tunnel. William Henry would leave the barge there as it went on its way to
The Norwood Tunnel Chesterfield and would visit the Angel inn for much needed refreshment. At that time a young lady called Ann Booth lived with her granddad, John Simmonite who was the owner of the angel Inn. Ann worked in the bar and there she met William Henry when he left the barge and came in for refreshment. William Henry courted Ann and they were married in 1881. They couldn’t live together immediately as their colliery house wasn’t finished. When they finally moved into their new home it was the 181st house built in Kiveton Park by the colliery owners for their workers and was known as 181 Kiveton. This house is now 25 Wales Road. Times were hard; although they had a new house they had no luxuries such as electricity and gas, only paraffin lamps for lighting. There was no hot water or bathroom, the toilet was an earth closet across the yard which was cleared once a week at night by a horse and cart. The ground floors were not concreted, just earthen. Residents had to take in a lodger to work at the colliery before the floors were finished. William Henry and Ann took in Thomas Hughes from Ireland who had come to work in the new colliery.
William Henry continued his legging job until 1907. On one of his journeys through the tunnel he heard something dropping into the water. The authorities investigated his story and found the tunnel roof was starting to collapse. William Henry had legged the last barge through the tunnel and it was closed in 1907. William Henry and Ann had 12 children at 25 Wales Road. One of their sons, Walter born 17th May 1892 served with the Sherwood Foresters during the 1914–18 war. He worked at Kiveton Park colliery prior to enlisting at the St Johns rooms on 3rd September 1914. Walter saw service in France until he was badly wounded at the battle for Ypres on 14th September 1915. Walters time in the army and his subsequent stay in various hospitals are the subject of his diary “Serving with the Colours” which has been published by the Kiveton Park & Wales History Society along with many other books documenting the history of Kiveton Park and Wales. These books are all on sale and can be ordered from any member of the History Society or from the Old Colliery Offices.
NEW EQUIPMENT As reported in the last issue of Community Matters, the Kiveton Park and Wales History Society recently obtained funding from the South Yorkshire Community Foundation/Grassroots. The funding is partly for purchasing equipment and some of that equipment has been purchased in the form of a laptop, a projector and an external hard drive. Already the equipment has been put to good use. At our last monthly meeting Maria Smith from the Creswell Crags Centre gave a very interesting talk and slide show using our laptop, projector and screen. At a previous meeting Eric Chambers used our equipment during his talk on family history. On the 22nd May the History Society had a stall at the Heritage Fayre in Rotherham. The laptop was also used for a continuous slide show displaying a number of our photographs and our KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST
recently purchased banners were on display to advertise the Society. If you are interested in joining the History Society we meet at 6.30pm every third Thursday of the month at the Old colliery Offices at Kiveton Park.
