Look out for the centre pages this month. Rotherham Borough Council Extended Schools have funded a special project where young people of our community have attended “A Taste of Media”. The Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust employed Redroad Radio and Kiveton Creative to work with the children for a week at the end of July. Several people who are working in the community were invited to the Old Colliery Offices to be intereviewed by the children and they have written about their week and made their very own radio show. The children were split up into four groups and you can see each group’s work, including their very own logo design on pages 9-12. Steph Hryschko, Chair of The Community Development Trust said “It was lovely to hear this beautiful old building ringing with the fun and laughter of the children enjoying themeselves whilst practicing their journalistic skills”.

By 2.30pm the marquee was clear, most of the dignitaries and the caterers had gone and we settled down to a routine. There were steady crowds coming in; busy, but not uncomfortably crowded. The bar and the caterers were doing good business and Seth Ellis was booked up for the rest of the day.
On Wednesday 21st May the marquee arrived; after months of planning, it was wonderful to see things happening. By Thursday there was lots of activity. Boats were arriving every few minutes; road signs were put up and the site was marked out. Then children's rides turned up, various people were taking down fences, building ramps, reducing trip hazards and generally making the place ship-shape. Friday saw the electricians arriving. The PA system was installed, the bins and the toilets arrived, closely followed by Mr. Silcock with his catering van and the beer from Brampton Brewery. The water lorry limped in following a breakdown! Next came the first of the traders and canal societies - now we were almost ready. Things were buzzing on site at 7 am on Saturday. The last of the stallholders came as did lots of volunteers, bacon butties were being served and Carlo the Clown arrived. Suddenly the tannoy was welcoming the public – we were open! By 10.30am, there were decent crowds everywhere. Already people were commenting upon how magnificent the boats looked – there were over 40 of them above Dog Kennel Bridge, many decked out in bunting. The formal ceremony started at 11.30am in the marquee, and the Festival was officially declared open at noon. The dignitaries moved down to the towpath for a very precarious photo opportunity on the front of the trip boat (Seth Ellis). One slip of some of those high heels and we would have got some very interesting publicity – a potential You Tube classic.
TRADING ON EBAY TRAINING CLASSES Government funders agree with us that the training we provide for trading on the internet could also help people with a variety of other skills such as Basic IT, Maths, English, Photography, research etc. That is why we are able to offer this Course to anyone not currently in work. We haven’t set the dates or times yet because we want you to tell us the best dates and times for you. Kivo-ebiz sold £30,000 of goods on ebay last year – so come on!! By 5pm things has slowed down, the last of the public left and the stallholders shut up for the night. There were a few helpful suggestions about improving things, but the overwhelming feeling was that things had gone really well. Would the good weather last? YES! Sunday was a scorcher. The queues for the ice cream van started by 10.30am and never let up until after 4pm. Again there was a wonderful atmosphere of calm enjoyment. It was superb to see so many people walking along the towpath to see all the boats especially the steam powered one whose occasional whistles always attracted a fresh crowd. The Sea Cadets seemed to be having a grand time canoeing but the fishing match was a disaster - so many people had gone to see what was happening that they scared off the fish, so no one was too upset. Monday was a repeat, except that the weather started to break in the late afternoon. This was not a problem because it meant that the crowds dwindled so the stallholders could make a quick getaway. Tuesday and Wednesday saw everything disappear and it was hard to imagine that the place had been buzzing only 48 hours previously.
BRASS BANDS, BUNS & BRIC A BRAC Kivo-ebiz took advantage of all the visitors coming down to Kiveton Woodland for the Brass band competition in July by holding a table top sale of items under £5 – not suitable for listing on eBay. Volunteers Brenda, June and Mark served up refreshments throughout the day with delicious home made cakes. We also had lots of new items donated by companies – from ½ price washing up liquid to bargain baby toys. A fantastic day was had by all with almost £300 being made to go towards future community projects. We always have hundreds of items available for sale – pop down to the Old Colliery Offices any week day to browse through the bargains. TOP TARGET MEMBER LANDS NEW JOB Article by Suzanne Moyle of Slimming World Tel 01909 518311 When Vicky Rodgers joined Slimming World to lose weight after having her two sons she never dreamed it would lead to winning a slimming competition and the start of a new career. Consultant Suzanne, who runs the Kiveton Park group, says she is extremely proud of Vicky. “Losing weight is an amazing achievement but maintaining weight loss is even more of a challenge. JOSH HILL, ‘THE KIVO KID’ Article by Mark Hill, Team Hill www.teamhill.weebly.com
Josh Hill better known as ‘THE KIVO KID’ successfully completed the 2008 Northern Championships, finishing an excellent 4th overall in the championship standings.
Racing took place at, Rowrah in Cumbria, Daventry and Stretton in Leicester. Of the 24 races entered, ‘THE KIVO KID’ achieved 23 top 10 places including 1x2nd, 6x3rds, 3x4ths, 8x5ths. Fifteen year old Josh’s dad Mark says “Josh is riding excellent, and is moving in the right direction. In 2008 he beat the top 2 in the championship at selected rounds and can do it again this year”. and winning three trophies last year makes the long tiring weekends worth while For 2009, TEAM HILL decided to contend a mixture of rounds from 2 championships, thus giving Josh the opportunity to mix it with the countries best to gain vital experience.
The championship kicked off at Tattershall in Lincolnshire. and THE KIVO KID under his new racing number 23 soon got back into the groove, qualifying in 6th place on the grid for race one, just 2 seconds off pole position. Dad Mark says “Josh had a good start to race one and quickly moved up to 4th place on the first lap. But unfortunately on lap 2 a technical problem struck and Josh had to retire. Feeling down but not out, we had a little team chat. And with his confidence and pride restored Josh went on to finish 5th in Race 2 and 7th in Race 3. and overall taking into account minor problems with the bike it was a good start to the season” Round 2 was again at Tattershall and the lovely weather made for some good racing THE KIVO KID had a good qualifying round, followed by three good races, bringing his bike home in 6th, 8th and 7th places. The weekend of 18/19th July saw Josh contest the British Championships at Daventry, and with fine weather on the Saturday for qualifying Josh clinched an impressive pole position. Race day ( Sunday) arrived but so did the cloud and showers, but this didnt put Josh off, infact he went on to win all three races, and take the overall first place trophy for the day, resulting in THE KIVO KID now sitting proudly at the top of the British Championship leading the rest by an impressive 25 points. Josh’s dad Mark, says “looking back, to what started as something to do at the weekends has now got serious. I’ve seen a massive difference in Josh’s riding, attitude and dedication, I know he always tries his best I cannot ask for anymore than that. I’m very proud of him”. About Our Week At The Old Colliery Offices After we got to know each other, we had an interview with Joyce Thacker, who is head of Children & Young People Services. It was really fascinating and we all enjoyed it. We learnt how to work in a radio studio and how to interview people. We came from different schools around the community and made new friends and learnt how to work in a group. We learnt how to do a newsletter and we drew logos. Grace said ‘It was a really good opportunity to learn lots of different new skills. All the groups enjoyed it and would like to do it again.’

SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES FOR KIVETON PARK & WALES YOUTHS We took part in a mixture of activities with the staff at the old Colliery offices and the activities have been FUN. It was called “A Taste of Media” and we have produced the middle four pages of this magazine and we are focusing on Kiveton Park & Wales Youth Community Matters. There are a mixture of articles which each group have made about interviews they have done with different people. These include a local head teacher who will be retiring during the summer holidays and a local radio producer called James Cusack from Galaxy. If you want to hear James then tune in to Galaxy on Sunday mornings at 8:00am till 10:00am. All groups interviewed him and he told us some interesting facts about what he does on his show, we also interviewed a local artist and head of youth services which was also interesting. We are also making a radio show on the local radio station Red Road but we are calling them different names. The names are Lleko, Kiveton Radio Show, Radio Kivo FM and K C Radio. We have been doing this with Matt and Trevor and we recorded these radio shows on Friday the 31st of July. Orange Group Members: Olivia, Lauren, Loren, Eleanor, Keely, Nicole.

Interview with Dan By Olivia & Lauren Q. What is your full name? A. Daniel James Bellamy. Q. Who do you look up to that has inspired you to do this job? A. Trevor because he has been doing this for many years. Q. How long have you been doing this job for? A. Five months. Q. How long do you wish to carry on your job for? A. Through-out university. Q. If you didn’t do this job then what would you like to do? A. A radio producer. Q. Which childhood memory will you remember all your life? A. When my brother broke my arm. Q. Kiveton Park & Wales Youth Community Matters We all came to the old colliery offices to learn how to produce our own radio show and our own page in the latest newsletter. We started by interviewing Joyce Thacker, head of Children and Young Peoples Services. She told us she was a little bit late because she had a incident with a young baby’s health. The following day we met PC Hamshaw and asked him several questions - he said he is very uncomfortable in his uniform! He said his hat is very big but it protects his head. Everyone tried on his protective clothing which was very heavy and we have a picture of some of the pink group with him.

Next we interviewed James who works at Galaxy Yorkshire. He says he loves his job because there is something different to do everyday. His most embarrassing moment was when he forgot what to say on air. He was born in Rotherham and has lived there ever since. His favourite sport is tennis and music is RnB and dance. After that we interviewed Mr. Madeley who has been head teacher for over 25 years. He has not had a holiday for nine years! His hobbies are walking, gardening and dancing although he is not very good at it.

Then we interviewed Sue who is a local artist . Her favourite painter is George Stubbs because he paints horses and she likes to paint horses. She also likes to paint different types of animals in pen, ink, oils and acrylic.
We also interviewed Josh Hill who is a Mini Moto Champ. His favourite track is Wilton Mill as he won there at the weekend. He gets support from his dad Mark Hill, J.G Newman & Central Garage. We also interviewed Sam from Jade. Jade has been running since 1990. Sam loves his job and has made lots of friends.

n Friday 8th of May, Year 10 took part in an impressive and exciting business and enterprise event that was based around stock market trading. The event was aimed to improve the pupils understanding of the stock market and to develop their skills in teamwork and risk management. Split into small teams, pupils eagerly watched a large screen of shares data and listened to radio broadcasts of five simulated days of stock market trading, whilst making important decisions about buying and selling their shares. The tension was quite high with pupils quickly working out the relevant values of their shares using special data forms and calculators. It was more than just an educational exercise as some pupils showed a deeper interest into actually buying a few shares in the future. Mr Smith, Director of Business and Enterprise, said “everyone seemed to have enjoyed this busy event and felt it was a huge success”!
Wales High School Vocational Academy was formally opened on Tuesday 12th May by Rotherham MBC’s Leader, Councillor Roger Stone. He was accompanied by a number of local dignitaries, including Mike Cuff, Chief Executive of RMBC; Catharine Kinsella, Strategic Leader for School Improvement and Lynne Newby, Building Manager, Environment and Development Services. The very impressive centre is situated at Vector 31, Mansfield Road, Wales Bar where a team of skilled trainers have been appointed by the school to deliver NVQ award-bearing courses. These include bricklaying, plastering, plumbing and electrics qualifications, aimed at Wales’s students aged between fourteen to eighteen years old. This new vocational curriculum is not only relevant and challenging; it is up-skilling the workforce of the future! This aspect is a key development since Wales High School gained national recognition as a High Performing School for Applied Learning.

ime 2 Craft have been open at 7-8 The Square, Wales since December 2008. Inside, you will find an Aladdins Cave of equipment and accessories for all kinds of hobbies. Sub Postmaster David ran what was previously the Post Office for sixteen years until 2006 when David had to close it due to ill health. David’s wife Pam had begun a knitting to order business 25 years ago and eventually turned to producing embroidered cards following the purchase of an embroidery machine. In the meantime, David and Pam’s daughter Deborah was running a successful craft unit in Helmsley in North Yorkshire producing silk flower arrangements. Deborah also progressed into making cards and together, the idea was developed to use the empty post office and turn this into a shop selling cards and materials for hand crafted cards.
So, in December 2008, Time 2 Craft opened up selling peel off’s, card, paper and accessories and this has now expanded into sales of cross stitch kits and canvasses, tapestry thread, embroidery silks and soft cottons. There are stands with reels of thread for hand and sewing machines, haberdashery items; crochet hooks and knitting needles, embroidery hoops, buttons and all kinds of accessories. You can also buy easels, acrylic paints and a range of artist’s equipment; Airfix kits and construction kits including boats, planes and cars. There is a large selection of children’s craft kits and stickers and pens of all kinds to use on different surfaces. Kiveton community woodland Article by Dougie MacTaggart Forestry Commission Community Ranger Tel: 01623 822447 Summer is finally upon us and the conservation grassland at the top of Kiveton Community Woodland is awash with the vivid colours of wildflowers and butterflies, and the ponds play host to many different dragon and damselflies. Regrettably, the pair of swans reported in Issue 23 did not nest on site but appear to have take up residence on the British Waterways fishing ponds next door to the woodland. They obviously looked over the fence and saw it was greener, wetter on the other side! In addition to the many regular dog-walkers and bike-riders enjoying the woodland there have been quite a number of other people and groups participating in activities and events on site. Pupils from Kiveton Park Infant School Nursery took part in a mini-beast session, scouts and beavers from the 11th Rotherham Scout Group did some shelterbuilding, and “earlybirds” attended a dawn chorus walk led by Mick Clay of SK58 bird-watching group.
Regrettably, over the past couple of months there has been an increase in the number of anti-social incidents in your Community Woodland. Quite a bit of wooden railing from the Amphitheatre has been stolen and had to be replaced at great cost, the fenceline around one of the ponds has been damaged by youths illegally fishing on site, and quads and motorbikes continue to blight what is otherwise a pleasant and reasonably safe environment. These miscreants live in your community and are known to you. Please report any incidents of anti-social behaviour you see, inside and outside the woodland, to the South Yorkshire Police on 01142 202020.
Kiveton Park Brass Band Festival 2009
The Brass Band Festival took place in the Amphtitheatre on Kiveton Community Woodland on Sunday 12th July. The contest, for 3rd Section, 4th Section and Unregistered bands attracted an entry of ten bands each of whom were required to perform a 20 minute entertainment programme in front of Adjudicator Mr Graham O’Connor and Judges Mrs Lois Longstaffe and Councillor Peter Blanksby. The 900 or so people that attended the event throughout the day were witness to a finely fought contest with Hucknall & Linby MC Brass coming out on top as winners of The Tomlinson Vase which was presented by Mrs Peggy Tomlinson, President of the Yorkshire & Humberside Brass band Association (pictured below). Prizes were awarded for: Most Entertaining Band Hucknall & Linby MC Brass
The Buggyfit classes continue to be well attended and the Kiveton Katapultz flyball team train on site twice weekly. All in all many diverse groups take advantage of the opportunities to exercise and play in the open spaces.

ARE YOU unemployed? During the last few months, Kiveton Creative have provided a service for the community to help people with pre-employment support. This included interview practice, first step IT training, updating IT skills and retraining, CV creation/improvement/ printing, jobsearch techniques, practice and guidance, letterwriting, application form assistance, internet access and signposting to relevant specialist provision. Julie Draper, Manager says, “Our qualified tutors have a good initial assessment procedure and as a result devised a relevant programme to help the unemployed search for work. Some people obtained IT support and training in order to increase their future job prospects. Others accessed online facilities and used our offices to search for work and complete job application forms”. This ‘Helping Hand Back to Work’ has also given the opportunity for unemployed people to gain experience in the Kiveton Creative office. Julie says, “Several people are faced with unemployment after serving over 20 years with one company. As a result, this becomes quite a daunting task to create a suitable CV and have the confidence to attend interviews to secure another job. Whilst experienced in a particular area, other skills can sometimes be limited and this project has given an excellent opportunity to train people, offering a broad range of duties to expand their
competence.” Thanks to NLDC, the success of the project has made way for other opportunities for Kiveton Creative to be able to assist unemployed people to increase employability skills. “We have been able to assess what the people of our community really need to help them get back into work”, said Julie. “It is not only lack of IT skills that hinder future work, people with good IT skills need to apply these to the work based environments and by broadening experience, more job opportunities will become available for each individual”. Kiveton Park & Wales History society Kiveton & Wales History Society www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk Article by Keith Stone, keith@stone.uk.net n the last issue of the Community Newsletter I asked for help in identifying the location of a snow scene in a photograph thought to be Wales Square. My thanks go to Mrs Susan Chambers for sending me a very comprehensive explanation. Susan described the photograph to her Mum, Jean Betteridge (nee Holroyd) who remembers her mother Ann Holroyd (nee Wragg, born 1877 in Waleswood and lived in the area all her life) says that the man sitting under the tree was “Bogey” Hawkins who lived in the cottage in the picture. The cottage was pulled down and Prestidge’s shop and the stone semi detached houses next door were built. Wales School is the building with apex roofs in the distance. Below is a photograph taken from the Wales Square side junction of School Close.

It is impossible to replicate the angle to see the school as it is in the original photograph because the villas on the left side of the school were built in 1904, according to the plaques on them. The school had its centenary in 1976 so the photo must have been taken between 1876-1904. The tree stood on the triangle opposite Walkers stackyard and the road was altered and widened when the shops were built. When the cottage was pulled down Mr Hawkins moved to the cottage that backs onto the cemetery at the top of Church Street. Look at the photographs side by side, I think we have a result, don’t you?

hree members of the Kiveton Park & Wales History Society received their HM Armed Forces Veteran’s badges at a presentation at the Magna Centre in Rotherham. Deputy Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Christopher J. Jewitt presented the trio with their badges in the presence of the Mayor of Rotherham Councillor Shaukat Ali and other dignitaries on 22nd June 2009. Pictured above are Len Gibson, Keith Southwood and Ray Wood with their badges.

hat I can tell you about this photograph is that the aircraft is a De Havilland DH.60M Moth. The owner of the aircraft on April 4th 1930 was a Mr F Symondson of Stag Lane. So, where was the photo taken? Who are the two policemen and the other people in the picture? What was it doing in that particular field? I look forward to your replies! Ken Chapman, Chairman of the Kiveton & Wales History Society recently gave talks on the life and times of Herbert Chapman, firstly to the residents of the Viking Centre on Keeton Hall Road and then to Class 3 children and Mr Hinds, Deputy Head at Wales Primary School. A further talk was also given at the Viking Centre - A Walk through Wales and Kiveton by the History Society. There was also a stand for three days at the Chesterfield Canal Exhibition in Kiveton Park and members worked tirelessly over the Bank Holiday weekend to make the exhibition an outstanding success. Thanks go to all involved and to everyone who visited the stand.
