COMMUNITY GARDEN GAZEEBO UPDATE How’s this for dedication? Throughout the past few months two volunteers in particular have been working literally hundreds of hours to ensure the completion of the gazebo building in the community garden. Arthur Whiteway, aged 82, and his brother, Edward, aged 72, have completed all the brickwork with the dedicated named bricks all in the wall. They have also sourced, carved and placed the oak upright timbers to support the roof. The first week in December with sub zero temperatures they were out there again putting the slates on the roof so that it is watertight for the winter. The final work will be on the internal floor with the final set of dedicated bricks. The floor bricks are now the only ones that can still be ordered if you contact us to place your order as soon as possible. We are grateful to all our volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the project but, these two, at their age and in this temperature – words can’t say it!!!

® NEW!

READER PHOTOS Thanks to Mrs Jean Ward of Kiveton Park for submitting these lovely pictures of the canal. If you have any local pictures which you would like to share with your community please send these to newsletter@kivetoncreative.co.uk PAGE 2

DOG FOULING It has recently become noticeable that dogs fouling pavements and other public places are on the increase. There are bins and bags available around the village so that dog owners out walking their dogs can clean up their dogs mess. Please help keep our villages clean and safe by using these facilities. It is an offence not to clean up after your dog. KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

rotherham young volunteer of the year: samantha davies Article by: Steph Hryschko This time last year the volunteers at Kivo-ebiz received the “project of the Year Award” at Rotherham Community Awards. This year, I was delighted to be invited back again, as a new Director of Voluntary Action Rotherham, to a truly inspiring evening. There were nominations in three categories: Project, Volunteer and Young Volunteer of the year. Once again Kiveton & Wales has reason to be proud with Samantha Davies winning the Young Volunteer of the Year for the fantastic work she does at Kiveton Youth Centre. Pictured left is Samantha receiving her award from Sarah.

KEEPING WARM IN WINTER Government statistics have revealed that people living in Rotherham Borough have a very much higher risk of dying from illnesses related to not keeping sufficiently warm in winter. The mortality rate is so alarming that Rotherham Borough Council, Sheffield Hallam University and the Primary Care Trust are investigating the “Barriers to keeping homes warm”

KIVO EBIZ A WINNER AGAIN Following their success in winning one of the Yorkshire Bank community awards Steph Hryschko Director of Kivo ebiz and Keith Stone Director of the Kiveton & Wales Development Trust (pictured above) were invited with all the other community award winners to the Yorkshire Banks 150th anniversary community awards presentation held at the Yorkshire Banks Leeds headquarters. Steph Hryschko Director of Kivo ebiz says “it’s another fantastic achievement for Kivo

ebiz following on from our previous successes in winning the 2008 Yorkshire & Humberside market towns award and the Rotherham Community achievement award, our thanks must also go to all the great volunteers that give up their time to make this all possible” Kivo ebiz goes from strength to strength and is regularly approached by various organizations throughout the country to help them set up similar models. Recently volunteers from Age Concern Blackpool visited Kivo ebiz to receive intensive internet training to enable them to use one of their four shops to specialize in ebay sales. And closer to home a recent joint venture set up with Rotherham Hospice is helping them to sell donated items on ebay.

KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

Some of you might be thinking we could tell them in two minutes without an investigation, however, they have asked Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust to help identify people to interview. We are looking for anyone aged 55+ to answer a few questions which will take 30 – 40 minutes of your time at home. All participants will receive a “goodie bag” for their help and findings will be used to set up new government initiatives. This is your chance to influence change – who knows this might be more help with heating bills for the elderly!!! If you are able and willing to participate, please call us on 01909 773348 or 01909 770007

DECEMBER 2009 She recalls. “However when I saw a sign for Slimming World in the window of St Johns Hall, where the group is held every Wednesday evening, I decided my boys needed a happy and healthy mum so I rang the consultant, Suzanne, for information.” “I attended my first Group in March 08 and was horrified at my weight but was assured there was complete confidentiality so it would never be revealed to anyone else. When I heard about all the ‘normal’ foods I could eat I knew that was the last week I was ever going to weigh that amount again.” Debbie goes on, “It was so easy to food optimise and without depriving myself I was amazed to find I had lost 6lbs in my first week which really spurred me on to continue.”

Single Mum Gives Her Sons Special Gift Article by: Suzanne Moyle Like every mum, Debbie Sommerville’s three sons mean the world to her. It was after the premature birth of her third son at 27 weeks that her marriage broke down and after eating her way through 5 long months in the Neonatal unit, she started to think about losing weight. “I felt so sluggish, couldn’t be bothered to cook healthy meals and felt a complete mess.”

As the weight disappeared Debbie’s confidence grew and started to take more pride in herself, even venturing onto the social scene again. “I’ve now lost a total of 5 stone 2lb and I’m a totally different person.” Debbie says proudly “I used to be the kind that drifted into the background and allowed people to treat me badly and now I’m confident and realise that I’m in control of my life not others. Slimming World has really changed my life for myself and my boys because I’m a happier mum and we are all much healthier and fitter. I’m not perfect - I have odd slip ups but the support I get from the group is fantastic, plus we have a good laugh too! I only have a few pounds to lose to get to my personal target but I know the goal is in sight now and can’t wait to finish the journey which I’ve started.”

Suzanne, the Slimming World Consultant for Kiveton Park Group which Debbie attends agrees that there is no greater gift that Debbie could give her sons than being the person she has become. “Debbie has embraced the Slimming World healthy eating plan and made changes which not only make her look fabulous but also feel great too. She is a brilliant mum and such an inspiration to other members that they recently voted her our Group’s “Miss Slinky 2009” – I am so proud of her.” For more information on Slimming World, please contact Suzanne on 01909 518311. The only thing you have to lose is weight!

Kiveton has a new Champion Josh Hill “The Kivo Kid” is the new MMRA motor biking Champion for 2009. Josh “The Kivo Kid” went into the last round of the British Championship at the demanding Llandow Bridgend Wales Circuit an astonishing 75 points in front of his nearest rival. He required just one point to secure his first championship and with two first places and one fourth in his three races, Josh achieved his goal with ease. Dad mark said “I am so proud and over the moon for Josh and for him to be crowned British Champion it is a tremendous achievement. It’s Josh’s reward for all the hard work, dedication and skill that he has showed.” Josh will finally get his hands on his MMRA British Championship trophy at an awards ceremony at Ormskirk in November. As for next season it’s onwards and upwards for Josh. He takes possession of his new GP70 machine, pictured left, in readiness for his move up into the MMRA GP70 Preston & District Championship, the first step in his quest for the GP 70 British title. Josh’s Dad Mark Hill would like to thank Simon of Central Garage Breakdown & Recovery & J.G Newman for their continued support this season and thanks also go to Calvin of RCW Engineering and John at jazzy signs & designs. Uprising V’s JADE Article by: Sam Oldroyd 01909 515912 Over 200 young people from across the Rother Valley South Area came along to an Uprising night at the Dinnington Resource Centre on Friday 30th October 2009. The event was funded by the Rother Valley South Area Assembly to provide diversionary activities for young people with the ultimate aim of reducing antisocial behaviour during the Halloween period. The dance event was led by JADE who joined forces with the North’s number 1 Hard Dance Event, Uprising. It brought a star studded DJ/MC line up to young people in the area, including one the UK’s biggest DJ’s, DJ Breeze. The event was held at the end of a week long programme of activities held at Dinnington Youth Centre where young people were able to try their hand at a whole host of activities including Break Dancing, Beat Boxing, Music Production and Graffiti Art. The event was a great success and Inspector Richard Scholey from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team confirmed “early indications are that it’s been one of the quietest Halloween periods we have had, this is clearly linked to the range of diversionary activities that have been arranged by our partner agencies”. Councillor Jane Havenhand, chair of the Assemblies Children & Young Peoples Task Group stated “this is a great example of all the agencies coming together to run a successful event. The young people behaved really well and it was good to see a mix of young people from across the area”. KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST

swimming for success Ex Swimmer and local Martin Bennett of Mcloughlin Way, Kiveton Park, has decided to dip his toes into the water once more after a seven year absence. Martin (21) a former pupil of Wales Junior School and Wales High School swam for Rotherham Metro swimming club from 1998 through to 2002. Taking part in many competitions both at home including the Yorkshire Championships and abroad in Holland, Belgium and Germany he also represented Wales High School, Rotherham Schools and the Sheffield and District A.S.A. collecting an impressive haul of medals and trophies along the way. Recently as part of his keep fit regime Martin decided to return to his former club to be put through his paces by the club coaches. Club coach Pete Roebuck who’s own son Joe represents Great Britain said “Its great to see Martin back as all ex members are welcome back with open arms” Martin is now put through his paces with intensive work outs for two hours per night three nights a week swimming approx 200 lengths per night. Martin said “It was a bit strange going back, but I have met many old friends. The swimming itself was a bit sluggish at first but now I have got back in my stride. With the help of the coaches my times have come on in leaps and bounds resulting in personal bests in all four strokes” Martin has now decided to give the competitive side another go and is taking part in a master’s event in Derby at the end of November and also the South Yorkshire Masters at Ponds Forge Sheffield in December.

ARCTIC CHALLENGE FOR BLUEBELL WOOD Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is located close to Rotherham. After working with families in the community for two years, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice proudly opened its doors to children with life limiting and life threatening conditions in September 2008. The Hospice allows them to offer 24 hour care to children on a one to one basis, 365 days a year. It also allows families to stay with them to have a break, often the first one they may have had in years. During respite stays the children can enjoy the spa facilities, the messy play area, the multi sensory equipment and many more fun and stimulating activities.

5 years ago and is now fighting back against this with an intensive fitness programme. He aims to lose at least 5 stones in weight and at the culmination of his training he is taking part in the Arctic Dog Sledding Challenge in February 2011. This 5 day event takes place in the Arctic Circle in winter, sledding over 200 kilometres from base camp into the wilds: this event will prove the ultimate challenge for many participants. Contrary to popular belief, Gary won’t be riding on the sled being pulled by the dogs but will have to push it for much of the way; the dogs are there to assist not to do all the work.

Currently working with almost 100 children, they anticipate that approximately 200 children will be eligible to receive support from Bluebell Wood each year. Children come from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and the North Midlands. It costs £2.5 million every year to offer this complete package of support, and with no statutory government funding, it is only thanks to the general public that they are able to offer this service.

The nature of the event means that it is run with a relatively small number of participants (13 maximum). Each participant will have his own sled, pulled by 4-6 huskies. An expedition leader, supported by an experienced expedition doctor and a local guide, will head up the expedition.

Gary Swift is a 53yr old, diabetic, from Kiveton Park, who has embarked on a serious get fit programme. Gary, an IT Manager working in Rotherham, was diagnosed with Diabetes about

Scouting is not just fun for kids, but adults too! If you have any time to give then this is a very worthwhile volunteering opportunity any scout groups in the area would appreciate your support. Whether this is helping with fundraising, offering a skill to share with local groups, helping out at meetings or weekend events – whatever you can give would be appreciated. There are over 30,000 youngsters in the country waiting to join scouting, but sadly insufficient adults available to make scouting available to all. A full range of Training and Support is available.

Scouting is alive and kicking in Kiveton Park & Wales, with groups running for all sections: Beavers (6-8yrs), Cubs (8-10½yrs), Scouts (10½-14yrs), Explorers (14-18yrs). If your son or daughter is interested in joining please give Sue a call on 01909 732862. Recent activities have included camping in Derbyshire, climbing, stone carvings, Laser Quest, Halloween party, taking part in the Remembrance Parade and much, much more!

www.justgiving.com/garyswift-arctic If the “Gift Aid” button is checked then the hospice will also get an extra 28p from the Government for every £1 sponsored.

In 2011, Scouting in Rotherham is celebrating 100 years and we are putting together a booklet to celebrate this. If you have any old photos or information about the early days of scouting in the area we would love to hear from you. Can you help us with some fundraising for new camping equipment? If you shop on line, then take a look at www.easyfundraising.org. uk. This is a link to all the popular sites (over 2000), but if you access them by this site then a percentage of your purchase is donated to the scout group. It is really easy to use. Just register, entering 11th Rotherham scout Group as your charity, then access the site you want to purchase from and use it in the usual way. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas & peaceful New Year.

Kiveton Community Woodland Article by Dougie MacTaggart Forestry Commission Community Ranger 01623 822447

Summer is behind us and we are already seeing the nights draw in as Autumn turns to Winter and the leaves on the trees change colour to complement the moodiness of the greying skies over the woodland. All is not gloom and doom however! As the leaves fall to the ground, the multi-layered carpet they form provides a home for numerous insects and invertebrates that will become food for reptiles and birds next year. Small mammals will use the leaves to line their nests with while they sleep during hibernation and, before we know it, Spring will be upon us and we will all be

looking forward to the long, warm days ahead. A simplistic view of life in Kiveton Community Woodland maybe! As well as the regular users of the woodland it has been encouraging and pleasing to see an increase in the number of younger people visiting the woodland over recent months. Whether they are out walking their dogs, riding their bicycles or just ‘hanging’ with their mates, it is a positive sign that there is more to life than television and X-box. Other activities on site in recent months include a bushcraft session where participants learned about shelter-building and fire-lighting, and how to use a knife safely and responsibly. Kiveton Park Infant School and Nursery used the woodland for their annual sponsored walk in earlyOctober with over 200 adults and children taking part. Buggyfit classes take place on

Friday afternoons and the Kiveton Katapultz Flyball team continues to train their dogs on site. A permit has recently been issued to Gerry Burt of Alba Fitness Innovations to run Military Fitness Training sessions in the woodland. The Halloween event on Wednesday 28th October was well supported with everyone taking home a pumpkin that they had carved themselves. Senseless vandalism continues to blight the woodland and it is not necessarily all being committed by young people! A stile and a number of fences have been removed that make it easier for horses and motor-cycles to enter the site, wooden poles used to support the fruit trees near the Colliery Road entrance have been stolen on two occasions, and illegal ‘fishermen’ continue to cause damage to fencing around the woodland ponds. Contrary to what you may be told, the Forestry Commission has not issued permits for horseriding, motor-cycling or fishing on Kiveton Community Woodland. Please report any incidents of anti-social behaviour you see, inside and outside the woodland, to the South Yorkshire Police on 01142 202020. Thank you.

Wales High School Wales Achieves International School Status “Congratulations on receiving the DCSF ISA Award on our 10th anniversary. You should all be very proud of yourselves, the school, your students and the wider community…” George Alagiah, presenter of the BBC Six O’clock News.

presented the cheque in a recent full school assembly. This money will go towards helping sick children who use the hospice and provide them with the support they need throughout their life. “It was an honour being a part of the fund raising events and presenting the cheque to Mr Kirby, knowing that it will help support the children. Just talking to him about Bluebell Wood was an inspiration to continue making a difference to other peoples’ lives.” Joseph Bairstow – Head Boy.

Halloween Fundraising Fun! Following a suggestion from Georgina Spencer, Year 10 organised a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Care with a Halloween theme. After a meeting with representatives from all Y10 tutor groups the pupils were keen to proceed.

Applying for the International School Award is a worthwhile exercise as it helps schools to focus on different cultures so enhancing student’s experiences. I hope more schools will apply for this prestigious award.” Mr Hughes – International Dimensions Officer.

In their first year they work in their local communities, championing sport and the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympics movement. In their second year they take on a mentoring role with the new Young Ambassador intake. Holly Bennett and Danny Crowther were chosen from the Wickersley School Sport Partnership to represent seven secondary and forty five primary schools from the Rotherham borough.

On October 8th, we held the annual Rag Presentation Assembly. Rag stands for ‘Raise and Give’. Our sixth form raised a very impressive collective sum of almost £6000! Our traditional Rag Day raised £2000 for the students’ chosen charity, Safe at Last. The rest of the money was raised by means of various events organised through Rag Challenge. £522 was presented to Suzanne McNeilly on behalf of Thornberry Animal Sanctuary. Marissa and Chris Unwin were also presented a cheque for £522 on behalf of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. The efforts of tutor group 12.4 raised £750 for the charity Help for Heroes through a sponsored balloon release during the Summer Fair.

Students created market stalls to raise funds. The students created stalls as varied as raffles, gunge challenges, spooky drinks and developed a dress pink day for staff. In participating, Year 10 students continued to develop their enterprise capabilities and managed to raise approximately £250. This was another clear example of enterprise fund raising, developed and delivered by the student body of Wales High School. Alex Smith said, “It’s great to have the chance to raise money for cancer care because we know how it affects people. Were really happy to know were helping those who suffer.” Georgia Hellewell said, “We have made and sold Halloween themed buns to raise money for breast cancer because it’s important to us to help in any way we can”. His alternative approach is based on experiences teaching in the Military and also within the civilian environment whilst still serving. “I want people to come to my classes and studio because they want to, not because the feel they have to!” says Gerry. Gerry is Fitness and Conditioning Coach to the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey Team and you will see him running around the Kiveton Community Woodlands putting them through their paces and having them spinning from the studio a few times a week. People have had the opportunity to meet and speak to the guys which has been great for the community. DECEMBER 2009 warders he was sent by train to Sheffield to be charged with the murder of Arthur Dyson. For the second hearing on January 22nd 1879 Charlie and two warders travelled north on the 5.15pm train from King’s Cross, this time to negate Peace’s demands to visit a toilet at each station stop he was provided with small bags into which he could pass water and then dispose of through the carriage window. His wrists were handcuffed together and one bracelet of a second pair was fastened to the links of the first and it’s other half held by Warder Robertson. The journey north was uneventful until the train neared Shireoaks when the window was dropped to dispose of one of the bags. Despite the fact the train was travelling at 50mph Charlie seized the moment and hurled himself through the open window tearing the handcuff from Robertson’s grasp. Incredibly the warder was just quick enough to grab the left ankle of the rapidly disappearing prisoner. The other warder was unable to get to the widow to assist his colleague and Peace hung fully outside the carriage for the next two miles as the snow covered landscape whizzed by. Charlie was kicking out with his right foot to break the warder’s grip and as the train passed a spot known as Harrycroft, just beyond Brancliffe Junction, his left shoe came off. This caused Robertson to lose his grip and his prisoner crashed head first down onto the track.

CHARLES PEACE THE KIVETON CONNECTION A TALE OF VICTORIAN VILLAINY

Many readers will have heard of the Victorian master criminal Charlie Peace but few will know of his connection with Kiveton. Born in 1832 in a poverty stricken area of Sheffield it was his ability as a burglar that gained him wealth, fame and elevated housebreaking to a science. He was a real Jekyll and Hyde character. On the one hand his police record stated ‘intelligent, resourceful, always goes armed and is willing to shoot’. On the other he was an animal lover, a talented musician and, for a while, even a Sunday School teacher. His willingness to shoot was eventually to be his passport to the gallows. In 1875 Charlie, now married, moved with his family to Darnall where he had a brief relationship with Catherine Dyson, a married neighbour. Her husband Arthur issued a writ and Charlie fled to Hull. In his absence the Dyson’s moved across the city to Banner Cross but infatuation got the better of Charlie, he tracked them down and on a dark November night shot and killed Arthur. Charlie went on the run and was not heard of again for two years. A master of disguise who could transform his facial features in an instance, he had an innate ability to avoid the clutches of the law. Teaming up with a woman called Susan Bailey they set

themselves up in Peckham London as Mr. & Mrs. Thompson, a well to do couple. With a fine house and a carriage and pair, they were regarded as model citizens with Charlie even becoming a church warden. At night however Charlie’s activities were less beneficial to the local community. Working up to five houses a night, nowhere in London and the south was safe from the most skilled burglar of his day. But Charlie’s days of luxury were not long to last. In October 1878 two policemen cornered him as he burgled a house and despite shooting one of them they bravely arrested him. Giving his name as John Ward he was tried at the Old Bailey and sentenced to penal servitude for life for the attempted murder of the policeman However in Pentoville Prison his true identity came to light and in the company of two

Hereabouts the brakes went on and immediately the train came to a standstill near the malt kilns at Kiveton Park the two warders along with some passengers and locals set off running the half a mile back down the line. Unfortunately from Charlie’s perspective escape was to elude him. In falling from the train he had sustained a severe scalp wound and one of the first men on the scene, William Stephenson from Kiveton Park, remembers seeing Peace lying semi conscious in a growing patch of crimson snow. A slow train bound for Sheffield was stopped and the injured man lifted into the guards van. Charlie later claimed that his leap from the train was a suicide bid but it is also a fair bet that he thought that he had a sporting chance of escape. Whatever the case, Charlie Peace was now more famous than ever. After two days in the cells at Sheffield’s Water Lane police station a doctor deemed him well enough for the case to continue, albeit it in a cold, candlelit subterranean cellar far from the public’s gaze. This clandestine hearing did not reflect well on the authorities and nor did the rapidity with which a still far from well Charles Peace was committed to stand trial for the murder of Arthur Dyson 11 days later at Leeds Assizes. His only line of defence was that he shot Arthur accidentally during a struggle. The jury did not believe this and after deliberating for a mere 15 minutes found him guilty. And so it was at Armley Prison on the morning of February 25th 1879 the bolt was drawn and Charles Peace, the most notorious criminal of the 19ty century died without a struggle. PAGE 17

kiveton park and wales history society In the last Newsletter we asked for information about the crew and the people standing round a Gypsy Moth aircraft. Well thanks to Mr Len Gibson of Kiveton Park and Mr George Birkin of York we do have some information.

First of all, what was the aircraft doing in a field? It is more than likely a forced landing, no pilot with any experience would try to land normally in such long grass. The reasons for the forced landing could be, run out of fuel, the pilot got lost in bad weather or it may have been engine failure. As I stated in the last issue, in 1930 the Moth was registered to Mr Symondson

Many people in Kiveton will remember Oswald Ilsley’s shop at Hard Lane. In the early 1930’s, Oswald, an enterprising man, was looking for ways to supplement the family’s income. When he heard that Albert Turner, a farmer in Anston, was about to work a herd of cattle whose milk would be “tubercular tested”, he decided to get in on the ground floor of the revolution in food production. He bought a Morris van and started a milk round while also working on nights down the mine. Milk then cost one old penny a pint. The new product would be sold for four old pennies a pint (approximately equivalent to two and a half new pence). The demand for the new “safer” milk took off and Oswald extended

his round to include Wales, Aston, Aughton, Swallownest and Harthill, as well as Kiveton Park. It was at this time that he was told by the then Pit Manager, Mr Hall, that Joe Lees was about to give up the lease on the shop at Hard Lane Crossroads. Oswald was asked if he would consider taking up the lease of the property which was owned by the Kiveton Coal Company and had been the first Co-op in Kiveton.
