Bogus Callers Most people who call at your home are genuine. But some intend to gain access to your home. They are bogus callers or distraction burglars. They want to steal money and valuables by using false stories to gain your confidence to enter your home or let someone else in. We can all help older or vulnerable people avoid obvious clues so opportunists pass by their homes. Some things unfortunately are hard to conceal such as older decor or grab rails but does the mobility scooter need to be parked so visibly? Does the key safe need to be so obvious?

your back. They also like to make things seem urgent: ‘There is a leak down the road and I need to check the water supply!’

Bogus callers pretend to be from popular organisations such as gas/ electricity/water/council or Police. Others includes gardeners, roof repairs and drive repairs. To help persuade us of their honesty they use props like hi-vis jackets, nice suits and false ID. Do not assume anything from a person’s appearance. Remember they want to get you away from your door. They might ask you to get something like a paper and pen, or claim you need to come out and look at your roof/drive/garage door’ which enables their pal to pop in behind

Keep doors locked even when you are at home. If you have a door chain don’t be embarrassed to use it or, if you feel vulnerable, telephone a younger neighbour. Use spy holes to give callers a once over. Ask official visitors to bring ID and a security word to confirm authenticity. Use the number on e.g. an old bill, not the ID presented, to check the veracity of an unexpected caller whilst keeping them outside waiting. Let’s not make their ‘calling’ any easier.

Kiveton Park Infant School need your help! To raise funds to purchase an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The provision of timely, appropriate first aid and emergency life saving CPR support can and does save lives. KPI school currently has a child in the Foundation Unit with congenital heart disease, and they hope to purchase an AED for the school. The defibrillator could be a huge life saver for the child, but will also benefit the whole school and the local community too. The school aim to raise this money in a number of ways:

The staff in the Foundation Unit took part in their own fundraiser to help towards the cost of the defibrillator and a ‘Just Giving’ page has been set up for the challenge. Sponsored by families and friends they all gave up chocolate for February. Caroline Shaw, the mother of the child in the Foundation Unit, gave up alcohol for February, also setting up her own Just Giving page to gain sponsors. The school held a ‘Dress Red for Hearts’ day on February 14th. Children and staff at KPI dressed in red for a donation of £1. The day also supported learning and understanding about hearts, heart conditions and why they would like a defibrillator in the school. Parent Ryan Edmonds and his workplace Sheffield Forgemasters are taking part in Tough Mudder and are kindly doing the challenge to add to their

goal and are looking for sponsorship for this. A Big thank you to Sheffield Forgemasters for their amazing support towards the fundraising. Their goal to purchase an AED will need to raise around £1500 and are also looking into various sources of funding to help lower the cost of the defibrillator. Shaw Plant Trading Ltd have also very kindly offered to pay for the upkeep of the AED which is an amazing offer that the school massively appreciate. Any amount raised after the amount needed to purchase the AED will go to The British Heart Foundation.

To support the schools fund raising efforts visIt www.gofundme.com and search Kiveton infants or alternatively call the school on (01909) 770303 To illustrate just why these defibrillators are so important, here’s what happened back in September and the good news ending that came about as a result of having a defibrillator available to use. On the evening of Monday 24th September during one of the walking football sessions at the Kiveton Community Sports park one of the players collapsed with what we now know was a massive heart attack. At the time it was thought he had just gone down under a tackle and was taking a few seconds breather. But with him not moving or responding to calls from his team mates to get up, one of them decided to investigate further and give Andy once more a call of “come on get up you lazy bugger” As his team mate stood over him he quickly realised there was a problem as he wasn’t moving or appearing to breathe. A cry of help went up, quick! somebody call 999. As his team mates started to administer CPR, a player from another pitch quickly came across and looking at the situation made an immediate dash for the defibrillator that was located on the side of the adjacent colliery offices building. With the defibrillator back at the scene the analysing pads were attached to Andys chest and the machine took over, analysing Andy’s heart and not being able to find a heart beat, the machine called out “stand clear” seconds later it

Andy pictured with the defibrilator that saved his life

“I cant thank people enough for what they did for me that night “ administered a shock to restart Andys heart. This shock and further CPR by his team mates and the arrival on the scene of a local nurse, village first responder and paramedic who took control of the situation Andy’s life was saved, but he wasn’t out of the woods, he was still gravely ill. Then suddenly from nowhere came the air ambulance which landed on the pitches, followed shortly by a road ambulance. After about 40 minutes Andy had been stabilised enough to be moved to the Northern General where he was put into an induced coma. He was eventually brought out of the

coma some days later and was able to start to take the first steps to recovery, which has included a heart bypass operation. Everyone was delighted when Andy finally left hospital exactly a month later to continue his recovery at home. The Community Development Trust installed the defibrillator just after the 3g pitches were built and are now so glad that they did. Andy has since returned to thank his team mates and he also thanks the other players present, local nurse, first responder and emergency crews who were all instrumental in saving his life that night.

Parish Council

NEWSLETTER

Spring Issue - March 2019

CHAIRMAN’S NOTE We go to a great deal of trouble and some not inconsiderable expense to provide facilities for the residents of the parish, be it footpaths, seating or play equipment. Unfortunately a few mindless yobs seem to think it’s there for them to damage and destroy. There has been damage to the skatepark at the main recreation ground. It is being assessed for safety. Should we deem it dangerous to use just as the decent weather is upon us and stop everyone from using it? In past years we have used offenders supplied by the South Yorkshire Community Rehabilitation Company to keep the parish public footpaths, bridleways and byways clear for walkers, pushchairs and prams and mobility scooters. Unfortunately, we have been informed that there will not be a team in the parish this year mainly due to a fall in the number of offenders given community service orders by the courts, and those that there are will be concentrating on looking after the grounds of churches. Please bear with us as we seek to find alternative ways of carrying out this important maintenance work. My thanks to the three respondents who replied to my request for comments and suggestions for putting the old school near the station to a use that would further the social wellbeing or social interests of the community. We are waiting for Rotherham Borough Council to decide whether to accept our application to list it as an asset of community value. Suggested future uses were either to use the building to showcase material on the history of the village or to establish a community arts and craft centre. Whatever the future holds for the building, the third respondent put her finger on the nub of the issue, which is how to preserve a longstanding and valued building in the parish without it becoming an inordinate drain on resources or “a money pit”. Suggestions, please.

SYLVIA

On 31 January our admin/account’s assistant Sylvia Jones retired. Sylvia joined us in 2011 intending to stay only for a short period until a clerk had been appointed following the resignation of the then clerk. Instead she stayed for almost eight years and in that time became a highly valued member of staff. Her forte is accounts and bookkeeping and this was reflected in the positive reports we received from our internal and external auditors. Always willing to go the extra mile, she has left a big hole to fill. We wish her and her husband, Alan, a long and happy retirement.

Christmas lights switch on 2018 It seems like yesterday but by the time you read this we shall be a quarter of the way through the year. We were very fortunate in 2017 in that the community bonfire and Christmas Lights switch-on events took place on days in which the weather was very kind, and last year we had another very good day for the bonfire. Unfortunately, our lucky streak was broken on Saturday 1 December. It was not a cold day but from lunch time onwards a steady drizzle began to fall, which lasted well into the evening. However, the people of Kiveton Park and Wales are of sturdy stock, were not to be deterred by a little rain and a great time was had by everyone who attended. The Garnett family took to the stage half-an-hour before the lights were

8

Wales Parish Council

due to be switched on and were an absolute sensation. Some of you said you had never heard of them but from the time they arrived and did their sound checks to their performance on the stage they were warbling away to the enjoyment of anyone in ear shot. The family were semi-finalists on Britain’s Got Talent 2016 with their signature tune, Natural Woman. Turns out they had been singing for years in choirs and shows and are seasoned hands. After the show they were bound for an all expenses paid plus fee cruise in the Caribbean, the headline act on New Year’s Eve. Some people have all the luck!

the lights, which get better every year, and turned the recreation ground car park and environs into a magical place; we received lots of compliments and appreciation from residents who enjoyed the ambience created throughout the village and the careful thought that had gone into matching lights and motifs for maximum effect. In addition they built us a pair of steps to access the trailer acting as the stage, again provided free of charge by Bob Memmory of RH Memmory Haulage. Thank you Neil, Andy and Bob. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the Santa’s grotto built by Helen Carline, a volunteer in the village hall, whose hard work and dedication each year puts beaming smiles on a lot of young children’s faces. Thanks, Helen. This year’s Christmas Lights switchon will take place on Saturday 30 November. We hope to see you there.

DONATIONS WELCOME We are planning this year to bring the recreation ground tennis courts up to Lawn Tennis Association standards. The courts were laid circa 1950 and are badly in need of refurbishment. One of the adult courts will be converted into two mini-tennis courts so that aspiring Andy Murrays and Johanna Kontas can develop and hone their skills from an early age. Wouldn’t it be brilliant if in years to come a future Wimbledon champion first fell in love with the game on the tennis courts of Wales Recreation Ground! The work to refurbish and convert the tennis courts will cost around £60,000. We are seeking grants to cover the cost and so far have been allocated £20,000 by Sport England, which has also agreed to match fund donations made as part of a crowdfunding campaign. The minimum sum we need to qualify for match funding is £1000. Once the work is done, we shall be

working with our partners – Active Regen Community Foundation Limited, the Lawn Tennis Association and organisations such as Rotherham Borough Council and local tennis clubs – to put on a programme of tennis and other activities that will enable residents and visitors to enjoy an active lifestyle. As well as sporting activities, we also want to use the double court area to put on family events such as shows, outdoor

markets and fun events that will promote local businesses and bring the community together. Let us have your suggestions; they’re always welcome. Donations are welcome. Just contact the clerk to the council by telephone on 01909 515784, by email at wales.pc@onetel.net or by calling at the parish office Wednesday – Friday and he will do the rest.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES We have teamed up with our partner Active Regen Community Foundation Limited to put on eight weeks of holiday programmes during the school holidays. All of the programmes are free but there is a limit to the number of places on each programme to maintain the correct ratio of children to coaches, so it’s a case of first come, first served! There will be a one week programme at Easter and May holiday breaks, four weeks for the summer holidays and one week for the October break. For more details and to make a booking, please contact Active Regen on 01909 510775 or by following them on their Facebook page.

THE CURSE OF DRUGS Those of you with a good memory will remember the case of a young woman called Rachel Whitear of Ledbury, Herefordshire, who died of an overdose of heroin at the age of 21 in May 2000. Her parents decided to release graphic pictures of Rachel’s death to warn of the dangers of drug use in a video aimed at teenagers. The photograph of Rachel’s body slumped on the floor with bruised and discoloured flesh and a hypodermic syringe in her hand was truly shocking. Rachel was a promising student who had 10 GCSEs, two A-levels, excelled at the piano, was accepted by five universities and went to read psychology and sociology at Bath University. But after one term she dropped out of university and went to live with her boyfriend in Exmouth, who it was believed had introduced her to drugs at the age of eighteen. She died in rented rooms in Essex, just days after contacting her parents to tell them that she was leaving her boyfriend and returning home. Rachel’s story is a sad story but one that is repeated on a regular basis in towns, cities and villages throughout the UK.

Kiveton Park & Wales is no different. Our attendants regularly find drug wraps discarded on the recreation ground each night by youngsters. And our CCTV cameras sometimes capture incidents of drug dealing, which we report to the police. Victims of drug addiction fuel crime and mindless vandalism as they become more and more ensnared in its embrace.

We expect the police to take action against the dealers and are quick to criticise when they seemingly do nothing. But the police can only be truly effective in the war against drugs if they have the determination to go after the dealers and local communities act as their eyes and ears. It is only by passing information to the police – the names and addresses of the dealers, the source of their drugs, where and how they sell them, the people who buy from them, etc – that we have a chance of ending this epidemic.

In 1920s Sheffield, two rival street gangs fought for control of the lucrative gambling trade, for a time controlled parts of the city and put ordinary citizens in fear. Their reign of terror only came to an end when the authorities acted in unison and a special squad of police officers, acting on good intelligence, made life very uncomfortable indeed for gang members. Whilst the police could not nowadays adopt the direct methods of their forebears, they can be equally effective if they get the information they need. We would therefore urge anyone who has information about drug dealing or drug use to contact the police by calling 101 or 0800 555 111 or by passing the information to Crimestoppers at https://www.southyorks.police. uk/contact-us/report-something/ Whichever method you choose to use, your report will be treated as anonymous if you ask the operator (101) or click the button requesting anonymity. Alternatively, let the clerk to the council have the information and he will pass it on to the police. Rachel grew up in a happy, loving environment, and had a fun-loving and outgoing personality which changed to unhappy, insecure and unreliable as the drugs tightened their grip on her. Let’s make sure that our children don’t have the sad fate that she had.

POLICE SURGERY Did you know that every Thursday between 1.00pm and 2.00pm the police hold a surgery in the village hall? This is an opportunity to bring to their attention anything that may be of concern to you or your family. The surgery is in private and anything that you raise with the officers in attendance will be treated in confidence.

The draw for the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup semi-finals has been made and the senior team face Penistone Church reserves. It will be a big ask for the lads to get to the final, but the good news is, we are at home ! The game is scheduled to take place on Saturday 9th March 2019, and we will be pushing for our biggest crowd this century. The seniors won this competiion in 2005 and 2006 and would become the first team ever to win it three times if we lift the trophy this year. Congratulations to the U10’s girls (pictured) who qualified for the

League Shield final with a fantastic performance, and will meet Handsworth Girls at Shelley FC on Saturday 9th March. Congratulations to Ian Emsden and the girls! Continuing with the girls section, our club has been approved to be an FA Wildcats Centre. It means we

can now continue to provide football opportunities for 5-11 year old girls locally and our surrounding villages. The initiative offers organised football sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. The centre will be up and running in April and based at kiveton Park Football Club/Wales High School

Spring has not quite sprung, but the first signs are already showing. Fresh green leaves are beginning to bud on the hawthorn, and the hazel has developed its bright yellow catkins. It won’t be long before skylarks are singing over the pit top once again. The weather may be warming now, but all through the Winter Kiveton’s dedicated Green Gym volunteers have been out improving our community woodland. Volunteering is highly rewarding and an excellent way to get outdoors, meet new people, and make a difference. If you would like to join the Green Gym volunteers, sessions run every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, 9:30am to 12:30pm. Sadly, Michael Hargreaves, one of Kiveton’s most enthusiastic and longest serving volunteers, passed away recently. He was one of the first to take part six years ago. A friend to everyone who met him, he will be greatly missed. Volunteering can also be a great opportunity for personal development. The Conservation Volunteers is currently recruiting volunteer officers. These are volunteers who do a little bit more, working across seven community woodlands in South Yorkshire, gaining valuable work experience and training

Saxon Golf Society Article by Paul Joynes Another golf season rapidly approaches with the winter weather almost behind us, so it’s time to get your golf clubs out of hibernation. The 2019 venues are booked and, whilst some old favourites will feature again this year, there are also three courses that are being played for the first time; in April we will be at Low Laithes near Wakefield, July takes us to Renishaw and Retford in October.

played over 27 holes, this was a wellattended event with almost 30 golfers competing for the highly prized Captains Shield. A tight finish over the last two holes culminated in a very popular winner holding his nerve, and the spoils went to Mr Ted Morley. It just goes to show that even over 27 holes age doesn’t necessarily favour the ‘younger’ members.

If there were two songs that best describes Ted, they would be ‘Straight down the middle’ and ‘The oldest swinger in town’!

Ted is the most senior golfer in the society and, at 74 years young, he has still got the skill and stamina to outlast some of those half his age! Well done Ted; your photo with this article might result in you being mobbed by autograph hunters coming up to you in Kiveton!

So, to conclude for this update, all new members are welcome to attend our long-established, friendly golf society with meetings held in the Saxon pub at 7pm on the first Sunday of each month. Why don’t you come along and join us – you might just enjoy yourself!

Our first day out in March will be in the Texas Scramble format which is always enjoyable as it creates a great team spirit with each four ball having to co-operate closely with each other to beat the opposition. One of the highlights during each golfing calendar is the Captains Day which will take place this year at Oulton Hall near Leeds over the testing 27 holes layout. The new Captain for 2019 is Wayne Calvert, taking over from last years’ retiring Captain Dave Shaw (who held his event in 2018 at Willow Valley near Brighouse). Again

Having hosted the 2018 final of the Rotherham “Last Man Standing” competition the club in 2019 is again hosting “Last Man Standing” games in mid-week which is a short version of “T twenty cricket” covering the Rotherham area and played by teams of 8 players.

Whilst on the ‘Seniors tour’ topic, the person inaugurated into the position of Vice Captain this year is another ‘oldie but goodie’, namely Mr Russ King. It should be noted that, although Russ has had a brief interlude during the 34 years the society has been in existence, he was one of the original founding members that joined the Saxon Golf Society way back at its inception in 1985. The old adage obviously still holds true: ‘you can’t keep a good man down!’. The Society’s fund-raising activities in 2018 has resulted in another successful amount being achieved; the total raised and the deserving charity organisation will be reported in the next edition of this magazine. This year’s charity day will once again be held at Rother Valley Golf course on Saturday 17th August.

Preventing burglary Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary. There are a few tips below. • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden, remembering to doublelock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key) • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) • Install a visual burglar alarm • Install good outside lighting • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property

18

• Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition • Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage • Keep ladders and tools stored away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property

• Ensure rear fencing is in good repair • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges • Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with Immobilise • Consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows • Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault

The Wales and Kiveton Park Neighbourhood Watch has been very sssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssuccessful over the past couple of years in establishing more street Watches, getting our message out to the local community and have even secured funding to support us with this work in the future. But, the fact is that unless we get more members attending our meetings, helping with the events and supporting our activities, then there will not be a NHW anymore in our area. Key members of the group have recently either moved away or taken on other caring or work responsibilities.

The message is simple –

Why should we have Neighbourhood Watches? The aim is to bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities where crime and anti-‐social behaviour is less likely to happen. Neighbourhood Watch is about making sure that no one has to feel afraid, vulnerable or isolated in the place where they live. What’s in it for me? Being a member of your local Neighbourhood Watch has many benefits. In our area those have recently included Christmas home safety packs, tamper proof license plate screws and reduced home reduced insurance premiums. !"#$%&'($)*+,-#,./$0##-1234$56$-"#$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ! ! !

HOUSES, NUMBERS AND NAMES By Betty Quinton

W

hen drilling began in 1864 for the possibility of discovering viable coal seams in Kiveton, men came from all over the country to work on the project. At first these men and some of their families were housed in huts on what is now Colliery Road, but when the project began to develop the colliery, it became clear that proper housing would have to be provided for these families. The first of the houses were constructed at Hard Lane in 1867. However, as there were no street signs at this time, the houses were just numbered as they were built. In 1880 A young man called William Henry Blackwell arrived from Derby to work at the pit at this time. He courted and married a young lady called Anne Booth from Killamarsh. She was a barmaid at her grandad’s Inn, The Angel Inn at Norwood. They were allocated house 181, Kiveton. This method of numbering the houses continued until 1912, when this house, as can be seen in the Register of Electors, became number 25 Wales Road, as it remains today. Other houses were being built by private builders and many of these were also given names, usually engraved on stone plaques on the front of the houses . Many of these plaques disappeared when the houses were renovated, but several still remain. Some of these include: Colliery Road 1-9, called Rose Cottages, 10 – 15, called Fern Terrace.

104 called South View, 110 – 116 called Stanmore Cottages, 118 – 124 called Kingston Cottages, 134 – 136 called The Laurels and 138 – 144 called Ash Cottages.

The History Society has copies of the Electoral Rolls from around 1900 to 1960. If you wish to investigate the history of your house, then please contact us and we will help if we can.

Also there were two villas opposite to where Trent Villas now stand called Sycamore House and Ash Villa.

You can contact us via our website www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk or alternatively our facebook page, search Kiveton and Wales history society.

Wales Road North, 2 and 4, built in 1908, was renamed Bridge Place, number 6 called Oaklea House, numbers 14 to 25 became Central Villas, number 60 called Craig-y-Don, 82 to 92 called West Thorpe Cottages, 102 called Ivanhoe House,
