Communitymatters The Magazine for the Community by the Community

Welcome to our edition of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Matters magazine. Well here we are, its March already and in just a few weeks we will be putting the clocks forward an hour to Britsh summertime. I’ll bet those two words have cheered everyone up, ok maybe not, as our summers can be so indifferent, but here’s hoping we get a cracker this year. As you will have noticed from our front page the Sports Park build is well and truly under way and is now only weeks away from completion. Read all about it on pages 3,4 & 5 and the grand opening in May that everyone’s invited to on page7.

Kiveton Community Sports Park A Field of Dreams

Kiveton Park & Wales

The Kiveton Park & Wales Community Development Trust are delighted to announce that after three years in the planning, work finally started in January on a major investment boost for the community of close to half a million pounds in a new all weather sports facility on Colliery Rd. An extensive local consultation exercise showed overwhelming demand and support for a new sports facility on the site. A subsequent feasibility study showed that the sport facility had the potential to be self-financing and generate a surplus that could be reinvested in the community. Having demonstrated a demand, the Trust undertook pre-feasibility work which estimated the construction costs would be in the region of £550,000. Some £200,000 of in-kind support was secured from steel company Harsco, however additional funds were required to release this support. The Trust approached Sport England for £75,000 funding and applied to Power to Change for the remainder. In August 2015 Power to Change awarded the Trust £308,454. Steph Hryschko chair of the trust said “We are absolutely thrilled that the building has started and we will soon be close to realising a dream. But this is not just about refurbishing a facility, but more about improving the lives of people in our community. To create a place that will be central in developing people’s confidence, teamwork, discipline, health and well being. We found the overwhelming opinion was that to bring an all weather facility to the community would be an invaluable asset. We hope this becomes a worthwhile legacy for future generations.” The funding will provide one 9-a-side and three 5-a-side floodlit, FIFA approved football pitches. A programme of activities suitable for all age groups and abilities will be provided, including sports such as cricket, bowls, boccia and goalball. A variety of clubs and wrap around services for school children will also be operated and the Trust expects to attract over 9,000 users in the first five years.

KIVETON COMMUNITY SPORTS PARK will provide the opportunity for “all to take part and for all to succeed” regardless of age, gender, disability, race, colour, or national origin. Our aim is for as many people as possible to be able to access this facility, and we are committed to: Creating an environment for people of all ages and backgrounds to get active. We know that disabled people are less likely to take part in sport with only one in six playing sport regularly compared to one in three non-disabled people. Our aim will seek to challenge and change this, to enable disabled people to take part in sport which is why we believe there should be no barriers to those who wish to access and use this facility, particularly if they are from groups who are currently under-represented in sport.

BUILDING THE DREAM Working with Burnell Briercliffe architects of Sheffield and Charles Lawrences surfaces both specialist in this field of work, we have now developed a state of the art 3G all weather facility. Incorporating the very latest in All weather surfaces. The Profoot Master Max 60 All of which is expected to be completed by the end of the first week in May. Although the major construction work started in January. One of the Community Developments most active volunteers Arthur Whiteway 89 (pictured right) removed the old wire mesh fencing, goal posts and lighting columns prior to the build back in early December. Arthur is currently visiting his daughter in Australia and will no doubt be surprised to see the finshed results when he returns at the end of May. D-Day Monday 25th Janauary and the early morning silence was broken by the sound of heavy plant machinery slowly making its way down Colliery Rd to the site and with work starting the same day the site has quickly been transformed.

At the time of this publication the build will be entering approximately its seventh week. All the excavations are now complete and considering there has been quite a lot of wet weather during this period, the build is on plan. Over the next two to three weeks we will really start to see the new facility take shape. Three members of the Kiveton Park Girls FC (Under 12’s) visited the site recently after their match against Dronfield Town and they were very excited at the prospect of playing at the new 3G facility!!! Girls are (left to right) Jarcy Hayward (Striker), Olivia Durrans (Defender) & Ella Pearson (Midfielder).

In 2015 Waleswood SCC a registered charity saw success both on and off the field with both the Saturday and Sunday 1st teams being league champions in their respective divisions. Both the Saturday and Sunday 2nd teams finished 4th in their respective divisions and both these teams gave opportunities to the junior players to gain experience in senior cricket thus achieving the clubs aim of looking to the future of the club. Off the field the facilities were again improved with the help of our volunteers who work tirelessly at the club. Our aim for 2016 is to build on the clubs efforts of last year and again promote the junior side of the game . The players commenced the winter nets in January at Dot Ball cricket based on the Waleswood industrial estate near LUK on a Tuesday evening at 7pm and this will run through until the outdoor nets start in April so feel free to pay a visit and join this family orientated club. NEWSLETTER

Spring Issue - March 2016

CHAIRMAN’S NOTE Welcome to the March edition of the council newsletter. Whilst we are making some progress with our projects, such as clearing the ditch at the bottom of the recreation ground to bring another football pitch into use and planting spring bulbs on verges, it’s not all good news. As you will see from the articles some selfish people are causing parking and dog s**t problems (because that’s just what it is); just ask the people who accidentally tread in it or get it on pushchair wheels, wheelchairs or electric go-carts – they are the ones who suffer due to this selfishness. There are plenty of red bins about the village to use. The market/car boot starts again on Tuesday 8th March and we are hoping to bring meat, fish and vegetable traders to it. It will only succeed if you use the facility we are trying to give you. Easter is early this year but the small children’s play area will be open, subject to suitable weather, from 9.00am until 4.30pm from 19th March until after Easter when summer opening starts. The bad weather we have had has wreaked havoc with the attendants’ winter schedule of repairs, maintenance and safety work so keep your eye on Facebook and notices for any changes.

WINTER WORK The Green Spaces team have been busy over the winter making sure we are ready for the 2016 season. A sun (or rain) shelter has been built on the children’s play area and we have purchased a seat and picnic bench to be installed shortly. We have a well-balanced team who have combined their individual skills to save money for the council. There are now spring bulbs planted along Wales Road so please don’t park on the verges. Rotherham Borough Council will not start cutting the grass along this stretch until the end of May or early June to give them a chance to become established. The next area to be planted will be Hard Lane and School Road to Wales Bar. This is an on-going project under our environmental improvement scheme and will, funds being available, extend onto Harthill Road and Todwick Lane.

CHRISTMAS 2015 Last Christmas we organised a joint Christmas event with the trustees of Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall. The Christmas lights put up by Baxter Technical Services, run by local lad Neil Baxter, ably assisted by his colleague Andy Harker, created a magical atmosphere which set the scene for the switch-on by guest of honour Afro Magic. Once again Nigel Gyte of NG Contracting & Land Management provided a trailer for the stage for free, Redroad FM was Master of Ceremonies and the Salvation Army Band provided the vibes along with the Church Choir. Leslie Batty supplied the costumes, Sue Bass arranged for the boys and girls of the scout movement to fill them and Michael Whiting provided the kiddies’ fun rides. They did us all proud and Santa and his elves had never had to work so hard to greet the throng of excited children eager to step inside his grotto. All in all a great evening and one we hope to better this coming Christmas. See you there!

DONNA REDDISH SAYS I wanted to update you regarding our road safety campaign outside Wales Primary School. After a number of set-backs we were finally told that our request for a zebra crossing on School Road has been approved. The zebra crossing will be operational in the next financial year with Cllr Dominic Beck assuring us that it will be in place in time for the next academic year in September. In addition to the zebra crossing we have also had confirmation that a school crossing patrol will be in place from 15th February 2016. I’d like to thank the parents and staff of Wales Primary School along with the local councillors and our MP Sir Kevin Barron for your continued support during this campaign.

Kiveton Park & Wales

THE THREE Ps The first P is for PARKING. This is becoming an issue in the village in general, but in one or two places in particular. The congestion outside the post office/one-stop shop is causing problems for drivers and pedestrians alike, especially the residents of Finningley Lodge. The road is dangerous to cross and buses find the stop difficult to access, which in turn makes it difficult for the less able to board the bus as the step up from the road, rather than the pavement, is too high. Traffic is often at a standstill during the start and end of the school day. This is also the case in Chestnut Avenue, Storth Lane and Limetree Avenue, whose residents not only have to contend with parking at the beginning and end of the school day, but all day too. The school buses often have trouble in Chestnut Avenue due to parking and traffic flow. School Road is a bone of contention, but more on this later! Chapel Walk is very congested, possibly with commuter parking since the restrictions to the Co-op car park. The doctors at Kiveton Park Primary Care Centre have voiced their concerns over this matter, stating that emergency services would find difficulty getting through to the surgery. Hard Lane is another area of concern. During busy times of the day, the junction with Station Road and Kiveton Lane is quite dangerous due to visibility issues caused by parked cars on Hard Lane. We know that everyone wants to park as near to their destination as possible, but if YOU are the person not parking with care and attention to other road users and pedestrians, please think and park sensibly; this could go some way to alleviating the problem in our village. The second P is for PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS! Yes, that is in the plural! There is good news regarding the crossing outside Kiveton Park Infant School. The crossing poles were finally illuminated just before Christmas and they make an amazing difference. There is Buff coloured high even better news regarding Buff coloured high friction road surfacing Wales Primary School. There has friction road surfacing been much campaigning by the Proposed Zebra council, especially the chairman Crossing and Councillor Blanksby, who Existing bus stop is a governor at the school, to remain the governors of the school Exisiting No waiting at and parents whose children any time restrictions attend the school, regarding parking and the dangers of crossing the road near the school. We can finally announce that there are plans to install a crossing this year outside No 14-16 School Road. Rotherham Borough Councillor Dominic Beck assures us that the crossing will be in place for the new academic year in September. The approaches to the crossing will be a different colour and surface from the road surface to make the crossing more visible to road users; it will also have an anti skid surface in order to make braking safer. We hope the crossing poles will be illuminated as well! The third P is for DOG POO! The amount of dog poo on our pavements and public areas is just disgusting! We have highlighted the dangers of children playing where dogs defecate before. Toxocariasis can, in its most extreme form, cause gradual loss of vision leading to eventual blindness!! It is like walking through a minefield trying to dodge the poo on our pavements and, once trodden on, it is very difficult to remove. From Chapel Way to McKenzie Way there are thirty six piles sprayed red. I’m sure that the majority of dog owners are not responsible for this epidemic but for the irresponsible few. PLEASE PICK UP OR PAY UP! On the subject of dogs, as from 6th April this year, it will be an offence for your dog not to be microchipped. If you obtain your puppy from a reputable source, it should be chipped with your details by the breeder. If you buy an older dog or one from a third party and it is already chipped, make sure you update the details from the previous owner to your own. We are once again offering free microchipping on Tuesday 21st June in the Parish Rooms from 10.30am, so put the date in your diaries.

COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES Wales High School’s PE department are pleased to announce that Ellis Harrison and Jack Baldry have both been selected to represent Yorkshire Rugby Football Union under 15s. Ellis and Jack were both successful at a recent trial and will now go on to represent their county against other counties across the country. This also adds to the school’s current success in Rugby Union. At present the school has 8 students involved in Yorkshire Carnegie’s England Rugby Development Player Programme pathway. The students that are currently training in the programme are: Jack Baldry, Tom Bignell, Will Bignell, Oliver Fallon, Archie Goddard, Ellis Harrison, Elliot Marris and Jacob Tiplady. The school also has both boys and girls set to trial over the next coming months and we will keep you updated on their progress. Good luck to all those representing Wales High School across the county.

FOODBANK Wales High School was involved in a food collection for The Trussell Trust, a foodbank charity which aims to bring communities together to end hunger and poverty. Three students from Year 11 organised for a collection to be done involving the whole school to help people in need at this crucial time of year. This is not the first time Wales High School has done a collection, having already raised 410kg for the same charity. The food was sent to Hope Church Foodbank for distributing across the Rotherham area last Christmas. Particular credit must go to Liam and Brandon, ably supported by Cameron Simmonds and Max Stevenson, all in Year 11. Liam said: “When the three of us visited the foodbank, we saw the reality of the issue. I suppose we just wanted to help, and doing it as a school was the best way of doing it. It gives us a sense of pride to know we are helping people that often have to make a choice between heating and eating. We just wanted to make sure that going hungry wasn’t an option, especially around Christmas when financial issues are hard enough as it is. We wanted to help people to have a Christmas with food on the table and to celebrate it with their family and be happy.”

SURGERY DATES Our local MP, the Rt Hon Sir Kevin Barron MP, will be holding surgeries at his constituency office at 9 Lordens Hill, Dinnington, Sheffield, S25 2QE, between 5pm and 7pm on the following Fridays: 11th March, 8th April, 22th April, 13th May, 27th May, 10th June and 24th June 2016.

Kiveton Park & Wales

JESS MYERS SAYS Have you seen the new Neighbourhood Watch signs going up around Wales and Kiveton Park recently? That’s because just a few people on your streets have given up some of their time in order to create and sustain ‘Watches’ in your area. These have numerous benefits and you are invited to join your local Watch if you aren’t a member already.

Why should we have Neighbourhood Watches? The aim is to bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are less likely to happen. Our vision is that of a caring society that is focused on trust and respect in which people are safe from crime and enjoy a good quality of life. Neighbourhood Watch is about making sure that no one has to feel afraid, vulnerable or isolated in the place where they live.

What’s in it for me? Being a member of your local Neighbourhood Watch has many benefits. In our area they have recently included free alarms for sheds, tamper-proof screw covers for vehicle number plates and reduced home insurance premiums. You can choose whether or not to receive reports from police about incidents in your area such as burglaries or car crime. These can be either by phone or by email. Registering any needs in your household also means that you will receive effectively targeted support from emergency services if an incident does occur. For example, if you declare that a member of your family has mobility issues and a flood happens, the responders will be better equipped to deal with those individual needs. Some streets in our locality have also worked to get a no cold calling zone in place for their street which means no more ‘chuggers’ knocking on doors asking for charity donations.

How do I get involved? To have a Neighbourhood Watch on your street you need at least 20% of the street’s residents to complete application forms. These are collected by one person on the street who volunteers to be the street co-ordinator. Completed applications are then sent to the Area C co-ordinator or directly to the District Chair Linda Maxted who will enter all preferences and needs on to the South Yorkshire Police Confirmer System Data Base. If you are interested in finding out if your street has a NHW in place or would like to help set one up by becoming a street co-ordinator then please email walesandkivetonparknhw@gmail.com or call 07708 741399. You can also use www.ourwatch.org.uk to contact your local street co-ordinator and to find out details of crime in your area.

March 2016

The group had a great time in January taking part in the NESST challenge event at Walesby Forest Scout Camp. The Beavers walked for a mile and a half completing activities along the way, the Cubs completed a 6 mile hike finishing in the dark, without getting lost. The scouts? Well they all attempted an 18 mile night hike – in the snow!! The only snow so far in the year and it landed on us! But it was a lovely experience and caused some distraction from our aching feet. We returned to our tents at 4am in the morning….. Cub scouts are 100 this year, so we are celebrating. If you were in cubs and have any special photos or experiences that you would like to share we would love to hear from you. We have lots of activities in store throughout the year and we are all proudly wearing our 100 Cub badges and woggles along with a centenary cub cap reminiscent of the ones cubs used to wear – if you can remember those. As part of our Million Hands project, understanding and helping those with dementia, we are supporting the Haberdashery and Fabric Shop in Dinnington to make Twiddlemuffs to donate to local nursing homes and people with dementia. They are busy knitting and crocheting the muffs then scouts are adding the twiddly bits on. Would you be able to help us too, by knitting or crocheting the muffs? Please get in touch if you would like a pattern or create one of your own. The Active Kids campaign is back at Sainsburys! If you are looking for somewhere to donate your vouchers please think of us. We use the vouchers to replace our games equipment and to buy foodstuffs for camp. Please pass the vouchers to any members who are part of the group or drop them in at Cortons 4 Cutz, next to St Johns Rooms. With the promise of lighter nights and warmer weather ahead our programmes are building up for a wide variety of activities for all sections. Scouting is great for adults too. Time to volunteer? We always need more adult help. Get in touch through our website www.11throtherhamscouts.org.uk or email info@11throtherhamscouts.org.uk or phone Sue on 07974308479.

Chesterfield Canal Trust Our big news is the return of our Festival. It will be held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May at Staveley Town Basin (S43 3XZ) and will mark the opening of the new Staveley Town Lock and a further 300 yards of canal beyond it. Our new trip boat, which will replace the John Varley in Chesterfield, will be officially named. The Festival should be better than ever because we are hosting the Inland Waterways Association National Trailboat Festival as well. This means that there should be thirty or more colourful boats moored all along the canal. They will all have arrived on trailers, using the slipway at the basin. Highlights will include an illuminated parade of boats on the Saturday night and a convoy right up to the River Rother at St Helena’s and back on the Monday (30th May). You will be able to join this six hour, ten mile, ten lock journey for only £15 on any of our tripboats. At the Festival, we will have five trip boats offering rides, plus canoeing, learning to drive a digger, children’s rides, birds of prey, plenty of entertainment, including belly dancers, fire eaters and a ukulele band, plus dozens of stalls, including food and drink with a Real Ale bar. Entry is just £3 and free for children under 12. There will be free parking nearby and disabled parking on site. The whole site is accessible to wheelchairs and three of the trip boats have wheelchair lifts. Starting at Easter and right through the summer, we will be running regular boat trips in Chesterfield from Tapton Lock on Sundays, from Hollingwood Hub in Staveley on Saturdays and from the Lock Keeper in Worksop on Sundays. No advance booking, just turn up. For more information about any of our activities, visit our website, just search for Chesterfield Canal. PAGE 14

New Zebra Crossing for School Road Following the Borough councils decision to install a Zebra crossing on School Rd Wales, Cllr Dominic Beck and Cllr Jenny Whysall, said: “We were both incredibly delighted together with partners to have successfully lobbied the Council by convincing them of the need for the investment of a zebra crossing on School Road, outside Wales Junior and Infants School. All local residents will recognise the treacherous road safety conditions outside the school, particularly on the bend and the very real risk this poses for school children, parents and elderly residents crossing the road throughout the day. “We would like to thank the school and the governors, in particlular Peter Blanksby and the parents action group who worked constructively with us throughout the campaign to bring the Council on board with this much needed investment. It is a perfect example of how local communities can succeed if they unite together for a common cause. We will now work to ensure the speedy implementation of the scheme.” Dog walkers, volunteers and friends of Kiveton Community Woodland got together to celebrate Christmas last year with dinner at the Parish Oven in Thorpe Salvin. It was a great evening full of good food and conversation with more than 20 of us squeezed around the table for a very nice three course meal. A big thank you to Sue for organising the evening and also to the pub staff for being so friendly and patient when more people turned up than expected. We didn’t win the pub quiz at the end but had lots of fun trying! Kiveton Community Woodland is well used by runners and joggers; it has some very good footpaths and a great hill to run up to help build fitness levels. In a recent meeting on site, the Community Ranger and Emma, a representative from Run England, looked at several potential routes around the woodland. The idea of the 3-2-1 running routes is to have 3 routes where each one is longer than the next so that people can build up their distances and also have set routes marked out so that they know have far they have run. The three routes proposed for Kiveton are roughly 1, 2 and 3km in length all starting and finishing near to the entrance on Colliery Road. Emma thought the routes looked great and that they would hopefully encourage people in the local community to either take up running or for existing runners to use the new routes on the community woodland. If everything goes to plan then there will also be a map and description of the routes on the notice board so that people can see where they will be going before they start. Volunteers have been out in blustery conditions and beautiful sunshine this year. They have cleared overgrown vegetation and started to remove an untidy fence next to the railway line; they’ve removed over 150 tree guards at the far end of the woodland and cleared an area of grass to sow wild flower seeds ready to add a splash of colour this spring. They have also given the nature area a bit of a tidy up before things start growing and children come out exploring and looking for creepy crawlies. If you would like to lend a hand, meet a great bunch of friendly volunteers and do something good for nature and your community woodland then get in touch. KK Rider Training, a motorcycle training organisation, is putting the area where the old pit head baths were located to good use by delivering motorcycle training there. It has been brought to the attention of the local police that someone has been hunting with a falcon on Kiveton Community Woodland. This practice is illegal and harmful to wildlife so if you see anyone doing it please contact your local police on 101. For more information about Kiveton Community Woodland please get in touch and speak to the South Yorkshire ranger team on 0300 0674340 or email south.yorkshire@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Throughout the Spring we will be doing lots of planting and digging with the children as well as coming closer to nature with our new ‘locals’ including ducks and ducklings from the ponds on site, squirrels, rabbits, tadpoles and frogs, minibeasts and insects which create lots of conversation, learning, questioning and gaining knowledge and understanding of their world around them. Children are provided with a wide range of learning opportunities covering all aspects of the EYFS, and have the opportunity to experience all weather conditions. There are endless benefits that outdoor play has to offer children, and whilst they may get muddy or wet sometimes as they explore their environment, our outdoor play and learning opportunities give children skills for life. Exploring nature, and life/growth cycles, helps in gaining knowledge and understanding of their world around them, builds their confidence and self-esteem, develops both fine and gross motor skills as part of their physical development, aids expression of their imagination and creativity, develops social skills and builds relationships.

I feel confident at the group and cannot wait for the next one.’ hool I was pleased to meet Deusa Poole of South Yorkshire Centre for Inclusive Living (SYCIL) which has been working with Voluntary Action Rotherham C (VAR) to create a new Peer Support Group for local people with neurological conditions. In practice this particular neuro support group is focussedlub 3 Decision making, problem solving and independence are all skills and qualities that children learn from their first-hand experiences outdoors. Whether in playgroup, nursery, or any of our out-of-school clubs, we know the children will enjoy being with us this Spring!

on younger or middle aged people although it is open to all. It meets at the Tesco (Town Centre) Community Space alternate weeks on Wednesdays at 12:30.

What is a Neuro Condition? ‘Neuro’ refers to a wide range of brain and nervous system conditions. It includes such as the effects of brain injuries e.g. caused by a road accident, or accident at work, strokes, MS, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy, Huntington’s, fibromyalgia, inflammation of brain tissue and many more. Neuro conditions are common and affect people of all ages. In my experience it has often been younger people who have not been served so well by traditional options. Crucially whilst some groups are only available by way of GP or other ‘official’ referral this new group is open to all those who are affected. That struck me as potentially really important. It helps put those affected in charge. What is the point of peer support? Deusa explains that: ‘Peer support works well as the support is given by people who have ‘been there, done that’ – They have had similar experiences, trials, tribulations and triumphs. The experience is from an equal not a medic or professional. It’s a different sort of knowledge – with added emotional insight and practicality.’ Signposting. ‘Signposting is also important. It’s not all ‘medical’ although we help with access to specialist services - occupational therapy, counselling, advocacy and benefits. Lots of people with neuro conditions now also enjoy active online friendships as well as those in person. Giving someone a signpost is often not enough in itself. Actually helping others in the same boat helps create a sense of equality – give and take. The helper gains personally-relevant knowledge through helping others as well as extra self esteem which is great for momentum taking you where you want to be.’ An example of the group working.

From a personal perspective I have seen on many occasions, both locally and elsewhere, how a trusted group means people can help each other. They generate positive adjustment to changed circumstances and enable people to develop useful buffers against stress and depression especially when combined with one to ones – maybe from simple friendship. Peers who have survived relevant experiences, are far more credible role models for others in the same situation. It is very reassuring. Whilst relatives and friends are often a huge support when a health problem arises they often literally don’t know what the person affected is going through. They simply cannot. But at the same time a suitable peer support group, with some useful structure and professional back up for one to one support, can help affected families in a big way. KIVETON PARK & WALES HISTORY SOCIETY A recent enquiry to the History Society concerning former residents of a house on Dawson Terrace prompted some research and we were able to provide our enquirer with details of who had lived in the house prior to the First World War. Many local people will remember the rows of miners houses situated to the south of Station Road; the location now of bungalows on Victoria Court. The Colliery Rows along with Carrington and Dawson Terraces (named in honour of Thomas Carrington and Edward Dawson; the company directors of Kiveton Park Colliery), were built during the 1870s to accommodate the influx of workers and were first identified by a number rather than a street name. We think for example that the house which is now 13 Carrington Terrace, used to be ‘number 218 Kiveton’. The Society has lists of electoral rolls from the early twentieth century showing where men lived along with the census details for the area back to 1841. If you are interested in looking at any of these, please get in touch through the website, stating your interest and attend one (or more) of our monthly meetings (nb. We would need to know in advance of any enquiries so that we can source the relevant information). The History Society welcomes new members and visitors. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at the Old Colliery Offices from 6.30pm. On alternate months we also have a speaker, covering a wide variety of history topics. If you are interested in history, why not come along: details of meetings and speakers over the next few months are as follows: Thursday 17th March Judy Colby: A wardrobe mistress’ tale Thursday 21st April AGM Thursday 19th May Mike Ogden; The seed of Kings – Alfred the Great Thursday 16th June Society meeting Thursday 21st July David Johnson July 1st – The Somme Membership is only £10 per annum; plus £1 (members) or £2 (visitors) per meeting to cover refreshments and speakers.
