AMAZING ALANA WINS YOUNG CITIZEN AWARD 2019 Eleven-year-old from Wales receives Rotary Young Citizen Award for brightening up lives with her Caring Cakes Eleven-year-old Alana Habergham-Rice from Wales is driven by a passion for what is fair and a desire to help people whom she believes aren’t as fortunate as her. This is against a backdrop of personal struggles, she is currently on the pathway for an Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment. The story began in 2014 when Alana was just 6. She decided that she wanted to do something for charity, so she set up her first Charity Cake Stall which has now become an annual event. She raises money for a girl at her school with cerebral palsy, helping with the cost of her therapy and specialist equipment, and funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity as well as other charities with a personal meaning. In 2017, Alana decided she wanted to do more than just have a cake stall and Alana’s Caring Cakes were born. Every month she would bake a heart-shaped cake covered in sweets for somebody who deserved a treat. The response was unbelievable, and it continues to grow. It is no longer just about heart-shaped cakes as she now asks what people like and considers whether the person lives alone or is part of a family. This has resulted in many themed buns. Her key focus is on the desire to make people smile when things are difficult and show them some love. Alana’s Caring Cakes are free of charge. Anybody can nominate but key is surprising the individual who has been nominated.

Alana has delivered to: •People in care homes •People in the middle of chemotherapy •Staff at a hospice who had cared for somebody who had recently died •People caring for family members with a terminal illness •People who go the extra mile for special friends Alana views what she does as being nothing special as she feels everybody should do nice things for people. She said: “It just makes me really happy that I can do something to make their time when it’s tough, better!” Rotherham Rotary Club were so impressed by Alana’s caring nature that they nominated her for a Rotary in Britain and Ireland Young Citizen Award. Alana says she is delighted to receive the Award: ‘This has made me so happy, I still can’t believe I have won an award for making cakes, thank you so much”. Alana received her Rotary Young Citizen Award, a trophy and £500 to go towards her chosen project or charity, from BBC TV Presenter Ellie Crisell at the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland Showcase (Conference) held in Nottingham on Sunday 12th May, 2019. Rotary in Britain and Ireland President Debbie Hodge said: “Alana is an amazing youngster who by combining cakes and caring is enabling love and compassion to be shared with those who most need it. An inspiring young lady who is an inspiration to us all!” Rotary District 1220 Governor Dr Cheryle Berry MBE said: " Alana is a truly inspirational young lady who has

brightened up the lives of so many others with her care and kindness. I am so very pleased and proud that she has achieved this Award." President of the Rotary Club of Rotherham Liz Harris said: “The Rotary Club of Rotherham and I are delighted that Alana has been recognised for the fabulous work she is doing in Rotherham. She is a credit to our town, and so deserves this award.” The Rotary Young Citizen Awards celebrate the amazing achievements of inspirational young people across Great Britain and Ireland, many of whom have assumed important responsibilities at a very young age. Art fundraisers Kiveton Park and District Art Group are pleased to announce that over the past year we managed to raise the sum of £140 for the British Legion, from the sale of poppies and the sum of £456 for Macmillan from the sale of Calendars. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this and we hope you are enjoying your purchases and look forward to seeing you again at our exhibition at the end of September and other events throughout the year.

TAK’s Royal seal of approval A Fundraising calendar in aid of the Todwick and Kiveton pony rescue centre (TAK) recently received the royal seal of approval from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Jan Cope the founder of the centre, was shocked when she recently received a letter of thanks from Kensington Palace. Local photographer, Lloyd Siddal who had put the calendar together featuring pictures of ponies rescued by Jan and here team sent a copy of the fundrasing calendar to William and Kate. Jan said “ I had no idea Lloyd had sent a copy to the Duke and Duchess so it was a complete shock to receive their letter of thanks. Lloyd is amazing he is always looking to raise awareness for us “

Jan went on to say the sanctuary, which has been running for 18 months has so far rescued 28 abandoned ponies and rehomed 11. It costs around £200 a week to run, so I’m constantly thinking about

how I‘m going to sustain it. The calendar which has raised £3,000 so far will go a long way to help.. Finally Lloyd is already working on plans for next years calendar.

of it being opened.

Another busy summer on the canal.

In September, we will be holding our second Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival. This year we have 53 walks covering the whole length of the canal ranging from 2 miles to 16 miles. There will also be lots of Boats & Boots, where you combine a walk with a cruise. All the walks will be on our website from June 10th and can be booked online or by phone. We will also be publishing a brochure. Sixteen of the walks will be passing through this area. Our tripboat Hugh Henshall does return trips from the Lock Keeper pub in Worksop every Sunday with 20% off food in the pub for all who go on a trip. On June 15th, July 13th and September 7th, it will be running Shireoaks to Turnerwood return cruises; £10 per person. Booking essential, ring 0114 360 0460.

In

early May, we had a visit from BBC’s Countryfiles Matt Baker, who spent a full day filming on the canal, including above Turnerwood. It was due to be broadcast on May 26th, but will be available on iPlayer for a while thereafter.

Our big news is that we have just appointed our first ever employee. George Rogers started as our new Development Manager on May 13th. He will be pushing forward plans with the aim to complete the restoration of the canal by 2027 – the 250th anniversary

Dawn Rose – our Cuckoo boat that is moored in Shireoaks marina – will be on display on the towpath in Shireoaks on June 9th, July 7th, August 4th and September 1st. For full information on all of our activities, see our website (search for Chesterfield Canal Trust) or ring 01246 477569 and

Parish Council

NEWSLETTER

Summer Issue - June 2019

CHAIRMAN’S NOTE D-I-V-O-R-C-E. After scratching their heads about it for a couple of years, following a question from a member of the village hall trust, “Why do you have parish council representation at your monthly trustee meetings?”, the village hall trustees have voted to end the arrangement whereby a councillor was invited to sit in at meetings of the trust’s board. We have always attended board meetings since the new village hall opened in 2008, an arrangement that the trustees concluded had its roots in the fact that “the village hall, in its infancy, was financially insecure and the board of trustees at that time were incapable of managing the business”. You may say, “What’s changed?” We couldn’t possibly comment. The council had a role in the original Festival Hall trust, which predated the new village hall, and put over half a million pounds into the new building from the sale of a parcel of parish land as well as other significant sums. Notwithstanding the whys or wherefores of council representation at trustee meetings, we believe that it was and is in the trust’s and residents’ interests for a councillor to be present. We suspect our presence is unwanted because of our representative’s tendency to ask questions, which were not always welcome. The relevant correspondence is available in the library. Last week I drove down to Rother Valley Caravan Park past the “Construction Traffic” and “Slow, Children” signs but I saw neither. It is very impressive and well set out. The bar has two beers and two lagers on draught, plenty of bottled beers and soft drinks. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I was told that Easter was busy and the tent area is sold out for the May bank holiday. Admission at the entrance still costs £5, just like the main entrance, so I parked on the road – not advisable, think of the park’s neighbours. It is well worth a stroll or cycle ride down one warm summer evening.

KAREN BOND We are pleased to report that we have appointed a replacement for Sylvia, who retired in January. Karen started in May and has already begun to make an impact. Have a look at our Facebook page at wales parish council. The office hours are now: Monday, 9.00am – 12 noon, Tuesday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.30pm.

Please Comment We

recently had an internal discussion about the council’s share of the revenue raised in this year’s council tax bills. One councillor thinks that the council’s share should be kept to a bare minimum and reducing expenditure on the bonfire and Christmas lights events – or better still not putting on these events at all – would help to achieve this aim. Everyone would agree that keeping council tax bills as low as possible is a given. However, this raises a more fundamental question: why have a parish council at all? The simple answer is that without one all local decisions affecting the parish would be made by the elected members of Rotherham Borough Council. Wales Parish Council is the first tier of local democracy and the means by which local people elected by parishioners are tasked with making decisions on behalf of, and for the benefit of, the parish. The things we mainly concentrate upon are: the management of the recreation ground charity, maintenance of the other recreational facilities (at the rear of East and South Terrace, off School Road and off Stoney Bank Drive), litter picking the side roads and

8

Wales Parish Council

estate roads that are not Rotherham Council’s responsibility, and maintenance of the war memorial and public footpaths; speaking on behalf of residents in relation to schemes affecting the parish, such as HS2 and the Gulliver’s development at Rother Valley, and putting on community events. If the parish council didn’t exist, they would be solely Rotherham’s responsibility and Rotherham councillors would decide whether or not to provide these services. For the owners of a Band B property, out of the £1,460 council tax payable to Rotherham this year, the parish council gets £71.00 back, which is slightly over 19 pence a day. The money is spent on carrying out the functions mentioned above and includes the cost of the six full and part-time employees who run the office and look after the recreation ground and other facilities. Annual pay increases, previously linked to the minimum wage and now the living wage, compulsory workplace pension schemes and general price increases by suppliers are factors that we take into account when setting each year’s budget, which ultimately determines the sum we ask to be raised in council tax. Last year’s bonfire cost £5,180 net

01909 515784

for the fireworks, music, crowd control barriers and toilet facilities. Other items were provided free of charge, including the wood for the bonfire which Hermes on Mansfield Road supplied. We made a small amount of income from liquor sales, traders hiring pitches and from public donations on the night. We don’t charge an entrance fee because we want every family to have the opportunity of attending, regardless of their financial circumstances. Likewise, last year’s Christmas lights cost £2,500, which comprised the Garnett family’s fee, sound engineer’s fee and Red Road FM’s reduced charge for their services. Bob Memmory of Killamarsh supplied the trailer for the stage free of charge and, as with the bonfire, Rotherham Council provided extra-large litter bins for free. We think this is money well spent as it helps to bring the community together, which is surely a good thing. However, we would welcome your thoughts, for or against.

Let us have your views on our Facebook page at wales parish council, by emailing the office at wales.pc@onetel.net or by speaking to one of us. wales.pc@onetel.net

We recently received some information about community transport services operating in South Yorkshire. What is community transport, you may ask? It’s a minibus service for eligible people, ie people who may have difficulty in using regular bus services due to disability, age, frailty or not living within easy access to a bus stop. In short, it’s for people who would otherwise be unable to travel or who would struggle getting to a bus stop. The service is available throughout South Yorkshire and delivered in our area by the lead operator, Sheffield Community Transport, which operates under the “Door2Door” brand and also subcontracts some of the work to other minibus operators such as Rotherham Community Transport. Community transport operators are non-profit making and subsidised by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to the tune of £1,657,215 per year. For a small fare passengers are picked up at their door and taken to a prebooked destination. The fares are reviewed from time-to-time but, as the services are subsidised, always kept below the cost of equivalent taxi journeys. Door2Door drivers have been vetted to ensure they are fit to transport children, young people and vulnerable adults and also trained to the nationally recognised standard set under the Minibus Driver

Wales Parish Council

Awareness Scheme, organised by the Community Transport Association. The objective of the scheme is enhancing minibus driving standards. All the vehicles have powered rear lifts and are fully wheelchair accessible. Drivers help users to board and alight, unload walking aids and wheelchairs, etc, and will help passengers with shopping to their doors. An assistance dog with a passenger is carried free of charge but not other dogs at all. Carers and friends can travel with the eligible passenger who booked the vehicle but are also charged a fare. Sheffield Community Transport, Barnsley Dial-a-Ride, Doncaster Community Transport and Rotherham Community Transport offer three types of service: • ShopperBus – picks passengers up from home on a predetermined day and takes them to and from a shopping location for a flat rate of £2.50 return. • Dial-a-Ride – picks passengers up from a location and transports

01909 515784

them to a destination of their choice. Fares start from £2.50 for up to a mile. • Group Travel – journeys booked by eligible groups using their own or a community transport driver. The group may be picked up together to go on a trip or picked up individually to go to one destination, for example a lunch club. Costs vary according to whether groups provide their own driver, period of hire and length of journey. Other services available in some areas include volunteer car schemes and a Dial-a-Ride+ type service, which for a higher fare offers guaranteed bookings, guaranteed time slots and daily or weekly repeat bookings, for example for regular health appointments or day centre visits. To use the services you must preregister as a member and thereafter book the service at least a day in advance, and not more than 6 days before. To register for the service, just phone your local operator, Rotherham Community Transport on 01709 517100 or Sheffield Community Transport on 0114 2859906. Further information and contact details for other community transport providers can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/ accessibility-door2door/.

LEST WE FORGET Have you noticed how wonderful the memorial and flower beds are looking at the moment? The beds are a riot of colour and the whole area is clean and tidy and a fitting tribute to the servicemen from this village whose names live on forever, carved in the marble stone. Our thanks must go to Martin of M B Gardenworks who designed, laid out, planted and maintains the flower beds on our and your behalf. And also to our attendants, Paul Brookes, Glen Westwood, Steve Chambers and Russ King who keep an eye on it and make sure it is kept clean and tidy. Paul recently washed down the stone and it is looking its very best. We’re sure you will agree that it is the least we can do to honour those who paid the ultimate price to preserve our freedom.

OH, I COULD WRITE A SONNET... Yes, it’s that time of year again when the children of Kiveton and Wales Nursery beaver away making Easter bonnets for the annual competition. It’s one of our highlights of the year and we fiercely compete for the privilege of attending and judging the bonnets. It’s not very pretty! This year was no exception and Cllrs Peter Blanksby, Christine Carswell, Dave Carswell and Wendy Fowkes were the lucky ones who gasped and marvelled at the quality and inventiveness of the creations on display. It’s almost an impossible task to pick the winners – in truth every child deserved a prize. This year’s worthy winners were: 1st Theia Laybourne, 2nd Mia Smyth and 3rd Seth Short. Long may this event continue!

LAST CHRISTMAS We engaged a professional photographer for the Christmas lights switch-on event, Sharron O’Reilly of Gina G Photography Studio, 31 Station Road, Kiveton Park, S26 6QP. The selection of photos on this page was taken on the night and are too good not to share.

As we reach the end of the 2018/19 season, we would like to place on record our sincere gratitude to all of our club sponsors. It is easy to forget just how important sponsors are to community football clubs like ours. Without them, we would not have the resources to exist. Please, take a look at the local businesses who sponsored us this season and consider using their services - their support allowed 22 teams, 250+ players, 500 parents and 20 coaches to enjoy the beautiful game in our village! If your business would like to sponsor us next season, let us know - we have

several packages open to sponsor specific teams or the club as a whole. We’re looking for new coaches again for the new season 2019 - 2020 Whether you are inexperienced and just passionate about football or experienced and want to progress Kiveton Park Football Club is the grassroots football club for you.

Labour Councillors Update

Bollards, Events and Road Resurfacing Since we last updated residents on our activity, we have seen our ‘Billy and Belinda Bollards’ installed outside all of our local primary schools. They have been funded from the small devolved budget we have as local Councillors and we think they look fantastic. Some of you will have noticed that the bollards reflect the colour and style of the school uniforms of each individual school. This fun yet seriously intended project is the latest in our ongoing efforts to help raise awareness of road safety and encourage motorists to take extra care driving through Kiveton and Wales. In addition to this we have held a Community Safety event in the Village Hall alongside Neighbourhood Watch amongst others. Finally, we have been working hard over recent years to lobby the Council on the much-needed resurfacing of Station Road in Kiveton Park. It has

12

been in a terrible way for some time and we have the pleasure in confirming that this is now on the Council’s programme of works for this current financial year 19/20.

We have a superb partnership with Wales High School. Last season we supported and paid 10 coaches to take their FA Level 1 in Coaching and 5 coaches to take their FA Level 2 in Coaching. We also have two coaches looking at applying for their FA Level 3 UEFA B coaching badges. All we require from you is full commitment and a passion for coaching football. I ran 11 miles before my knee gave way and walked or rather hobbled the last 15 miles. I’d rather have run them tbh! 41000 people took part. I must have been overtaken by at least 40000 of them.

the large crowd, the applause the live bands and the sights of our capital city. The final thing that kept me going was the vulnerable children who I was running for and who’s lives we are changing. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. 7 hours 11 minutes and 25 seconds was about 3 and a 1/4 hours longer than I anticipated but I made it. It was the most amazing day. Over 39 years the London Marathon has raised 1 billion for Charitable causes. Thank you once again to all who have donated to the Children’s Society. You were so very generous. We raised just over £3k together.

A WELL DESERVED AWARD

In all seriousness, the 5 things that helped keep me going was knowing I had to go into assemblies in our local schools and let them know how I’d fared as they’ve been so incredibly supportive; the generous sponsorship and donations; the knowledge I was being tracked on the London Marathon App by so many people who also sent encouraging messages; the crowds who continually shouted out ‘come on Reverend Gary’ it felt like I was surrounded by friends and I lost count of the number of high fives I exchanged. It was the most amazing experience

Summer is coming and this will hopefully bring along the better weather and we as group start our trips out season. In May we were invited to meet up with fellow MU members at Worksop Priory and have guided tour of the newly restored Priory, this was a very enjoyable event. Our June meeting will be back at St. Johns, when our speaker will be Anne

The President of the Republic of France has appointed Tom Staniforth aged 96 and a faithful member of Wales Parish Church to the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre national de la Legion d’ Honneur which recognizes his military engagement and steadfast involvement in the Liberation of France during the 2nd World War. Markham, telling us about her work with the homeless. We try and support issues that are impacting on our community and find out how we can help and support local groups. We are back on the road again for July, with our visit to Dobbie’s for afternoon tea. MU have been approached by groups using St. Johns Rooms to help produce Christmas bunting for next year, so any ideas and crafters out there, we need your help. We often mention the need for helpers

at Music Tots, which is held every Thursday morning 9:30am – 11:30am at St. John’s Room, term time only. But we never mention that this group is open for all people with young children, please come along for a sing song and a cuppa. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month, at 7pm and you are very welcome. Please come along for a chat, a listen to what we do and most of all Friendship.

Wales Chapel 150th Anniversary Weekend This celebratory well attended event took place over the weekend of April 13th and 14th at Wales Chapel.

The enormity of the volume of memorabilia spanning over 7 decades covered Wales Chapel youth club, the many sports events that were organised, the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs London Weekends, the huge Wales/Kiveton Carnivals, holidays on the Norfolk Broads, and the infamous Oughtibridge Camp, were all down to the dedication and hard work of one selfless person, Roy Staniforth M.B.E. A great deal of gratitude is owed by many from several generations of people within the local community, and Roy would have been very proud to know his memory lives on as part of this special chapel anniversary weekend.

The Saturday was an open day that had lots going on, and after being officially opened by Reverend Geoffrey Clarke there was musical activity and singing performed by members of Wales Community Theatre Players. A rendition of “ I dreamed a dream” from Les Miserables by Alison Wade was a treat to listen to.

Refreshments were provided and our thanks are expressed for the kind donations given towards the upkeep of the chapel buildings.

Adorning the chapel were beautiful floral arrangements very kindly provided a by Blessed William Richardson Church, Wales Church, The Crossing, South Anston Methodist Church and Margaret Kidger.

An ensemble of WCTP entertained us with wonderful singing, and among the congregation were some of our local councillors who were in good voice

Onto Sunday, and a special anniversary service was held at 3pm with representation from all the local churches.

when it came to singing the hymns! The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham honoured us with their presence, and at the end of the service a special anniversary cake was lit and the cake cut ceremoniously by our civic guests. It was a very special weekend, and one deserving of recognition of 150 years of worship and community activities involving Wales Chapel, that have played a part in the lives of many people in our local villages and beyond. Thank you to all those who put in a lot of work to make the occasion special, all those who came to see us over the weekend, and for the stunning flower displays kindly provided. Don’t forget to come and join us for the forthcoming entertainment by Wales Community Theatre Players who will be performing at the chapel on 11th, 12th and 13th July to celebrate the chapels history. Be sure to get your tickets early as they are selling out fast, and you do not want to miss it!

A chapel history booklet with content from Hannah Robinson “ A short history”, that covered some of the chapel’s earlier years and origins was available, and there was a display with work created by the pupils from Wales Primary School on show. The long history of May Queens and Captains were all available to see on photos and a special framed document that included every year from 1947 to 2010. One of the early May Queens from the year 1954 is still one of our regular chapel attenders and members, Brenda Bradley. There were numerous other display stands to view, and many albums crammed with such an abundance of photos, newspaper articles and memorabilia. A greatly anticipated slot from a local barbershop quartet proved a big hit, Also throughout the day there was an Easter egg hunt for the children, and some happy smiling faces resulted after the hiding places for the eggs were discovered!

Kiveton Community Woodland

By Tom Marshall

Summer

is upon us! Trees are blossoming, wildflowers are blooming everywhere, and the butterflies and bees have emerged for their time in the sun. Over the spring, great swathes of Kiveton Community Woodland were turned yellow by the sheer abundance of cowslips. A sure sign of the changing seasons, and a wonderful sight to behold. Throughout May, Kiveton Community Woodland was the venue for the Green Angels Outdoor Learning course. Attendees gained valuable skills and experience for working with children outdoors. Part of the training involved the completion of the John Muir award. An environmental award which seeks to connect people with nature, and to enjoy and care for wild spaces. It is

18

open to all people and is a great way for groups and families to explore Kiveton Community Woodland. Also in May, employees of Royal Bank of Scotland, volunteered their time as part of an initiative with the Conservation Volunteers. Working hard under the baking sun, they installed a new section of post and wire fence in a day. Improvements like this are being made all the time, and you can help by joining Kiveton’s resident Green Gym volunteer team. The volunteers meet twice a month on Thursdays, for a morning of conservation activities. Work at your own pace to improve your health and wellbeing. In April, Green Gym attendees went for a walk along the Chesterfield canal to see the Spring bluebells in flower.

Upcoming events for Summer 2019:

Guided Walk – Wed 5th June. Join us for a walk around Kiveton Community Woodland, and learn about its history, heritage, and wildlife. Woodland Adventurers – Sat 17th August. Wild activities for children. Acorns (2-8 years) will be pond dipping and making stick rafts. Oaks (8-14 years) will be doing creative woodland crafts. You can book your place on eventbrite.co.uk. If you have any queries about the community woodland, volunteering and training, or upcoming events, please contact The Conservation Volunteers: southyorkshire@tcv.org. uk, 01302 388832 The Conservation Volunteers manages Kiveton Community Woodland on behalf of the Land Trust.

The Wales and Kiveton Park Neighbourhood Watch has been very sssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssuccessful over the past couple of years in establishing more street h Watches, getting our message out to the local community and have even secured funding to support us with this work in the future. But, the fact is that unless we get more members attending our meetings, helping with the events and supporting our activities, then there will not be a NHW anymore in our area. NEEDED URGENTLY: A volunteer to provide maternity cover for the role of Secretary. Also Co-‐ordinator volunteers to set up Watches where we have interest from residents on: Norwood Crescent, Wales Road, Pennyholme Close and Lambrell Avenue. How do I get involved? To have a Neighbourhood Watch on a road you need at least 20% of the street’s residents to complete application forms. These are then collected by one person who volunteers to be the ‘Co-‐ordinator’. The life of Ken Raynor 1918 - 2017 By Christine Edwards & Fran Blanksby

Ken is pictured front row, far left Ken was born in September 1918 and lived at 40 Victoria Terrace with his parents, John and Clara (Noble) both from the Kiveton Park area and his sister Marion. He was a meticulous book keeper, recorder of home life and an avid self – educator throughout his life. He attended Junior Technical School – then Chelmsford Mining and Technical Institute at Dinnington from 1932/33 with the aid of money from the local Colliery Board and his parents, which amounted to 30 shillings a year. He studied and passed accountancy exams, then worked briefly at Firth Brown Tools before being employed at the Colliery Pit Offices in the 1950’s, where he stayed until it’s closure. In 1956 he bought his first car for £682, then after his father died he went to live at 9 Colliery Road. The family kept pigs

on an allotment and all expenses were duly noted by Ken. He formed a Youth Club and a Scout Group on South View. A communal wooden building housed both and also served as storage for pantomime costumes which he used each year in a production “On The Green.” He, Marion and all the residents took part. He also organised bonfires amongst other things. Ken loved ballroom dancing and won a bronze medal at Blackpool Winter Gardens in 1945 –presented by the International Dancing Masters Association. He was a good singer too. He acted as a Civil Defence and ARP Warden during WW2 and as a staunch supporter of the Labour Party, he stood for ward councillor in 1989 and served

on the Parish Council which saw the first Christmas Lights put up in the village in 2001. Ken never stopped learning and took himself off to college at the age of 60+ to learn about computers and he even bought a camera to learn how to put photos on to a computer. He never married but had his own circle of friends. His sister, Marion, married Maurice Doncaster and eventually lived at 7 South View, opposite Ken. He came over as a somewhat reserved person, “surly and strict” to some neighbours and local kids when and if they caused problems, nevertheless, during the span of his life he packed in a lot of interest and effort into caring for his local community. Had he lived another few months he would have reached the age of 100.
