Now that Winter is here again, and with it the shorter days, longer nights and possibly bad weather. Do you know someone perhaps an elderly relative or neighbour that might be grateful for some help or are likely to be on their own this Christmas ? Why not pop in and ask if they are okay or need anything, maybe a little shopping or a just a cup of tea and a chat. You could be the only person they see or speak to for days. IT COSTS NOTHING AND COULD REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONE THIS WINTER.

Support your local Pantomime Wales Community Theatre Players are busy rehearsing for their 2018 Pantomime. They will be performing Dick Whittington at the Montgomery Theatre in Sheffield from Friday 12 January to Saturday 20 January. In a big step forward tickets can be booked on-line this year at www.walesctp.com/ tickets although there is still a box office number for group bookings or queries. Many of you may recognise the number 0114 248 6393 as it is the

2

number used by Roy Staniforth MBE for many years. This will be our 5th production of Dick Whittington having previously performed it in 1968, 1979, 1992 and 2006. Just looking at the cast for the 2018 production it highlights the links that so many people maintain with the group for generations. 13 of the 2018 cast were in the 2006 production

and there are many links to the cast of 1979 and 1992 especially in our amazing back stage team. The group love nothing more than playing to a full house and tickers are selling fast so make sure you books yours soon. They make a great Christmas present as it’s a great opportunity to spend time with loved ones.

Communitymatters The Magazine for the Community by the Community Welcome to our Christmas/winter edition of the Kiveton Park & Wales Community Matters magazine. With Christmas just around the corner that’s nearly another year over. Christmas, a joyous time for the family to get together, exchange presents and enjoy a huge roast dinner, with Brussel sprouts of course. Have a happy and safe Christmas and we hope that Santa brings you everything that you have wished for. But please spare a thought for all of those who are not so fortunate, that maybe live alone or have no one close and who will find Christmas not such a joyous time. Please also spare a thought for all those who for one reason or another will be working on Christmas Day. Finally a BIG thank you to everyone who has contributed to the magazine this year and also to all our volunteers who brave all weathers to bring the magazine to your door.

Kiveton & South Rotherham Memory Cafe Cafe celebrates its first anniversary On Monday, 9th October, the Kiveton and South Rotherham Memory Café celebrated its first anniversary. The café was started by Rotherham Rotary and has been held each month in Kiveton Park and Wales Village Hall. Chairman John Wadsworth thanked all the volunteers and fund raisers, both Rotary and local, who have made running the café possible. He then received a cheque for £202 from Cate Goodlad of the Kiveton Community Development Trust, proceeds of fundraising on the day of their Memory Walk. Musical entertainment was provided by Dave Brocklebank, with many of the guests singing along and dancing. A raffle was also held. Guests at the December Memory Café will be treated to some good entertainment as well as free refreshments. The Christmas show on December 11th will be by members of the local Blu Crew. The cafés are for anyone in the area who suffers from memory problems

Python trims the cut The Chesterfield Canal Trust has recently begun its autumn season of vegetation trimming. We used the Python, an 88 year old ex-British Waterways work boat, which is ideal for the task as it has a large open cargo hold which can hold lots of builders’ bags into which all the cut material can be put. Volunteers were cutting back branches and young trees that were hanging over the canal. They were armed with loppers, shears and secateurs. This work can only be done from a boat, unlike hedge cutting along the towpath that is easily accessible and done regularly. By the end of the first day, 12 builders’ bags had been filled, garnered from three miles of the canal.

From left to right: Mike Sumption (Secretary), John Wadsworth (Chairman), Cate Goodlad (KPWCDT) Peter Gibbons (Treasurer). and their carers and take place at Kiveton Park and Wales Village Hall on the second Mondays at 1.30 pm. They provide an opportunity to meet with people with similar problems, to chat to dementia advisers, as well as enjoying some entertainment. Just turn up or phone John on 01709 372442 for more details.

Kiveton Co-op Food has kindly agreed for Rotherham Rotary to hold its Christmas collection outside the store from December 18th to 20th and all proceeds will go to the Café. Rotarian Roger hopes to bring his street organ to entertain visitors to the store and all donations are welcome.

The volunteers were organised by Jan Warsop who prepared a 17 day schedule of trimming which ran up to first week in November. This covered the whole of the eastern section of the canal from Kiveton Park, through Worksop and Retford to the River Trent. All tools and safety equipment were provided, along with regular hot or cold drinks. There were welfare

facilities on board, including a toilet and hot running water, so all volunteers could take a break in comfort during their shift. If you would like to help with future tasks, please go to the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s website for further information – just search for Chesterfield Canal.

NEWSLETTER

Winter Issue -Dec 2017

CHAIRMAN’S NOTE Due to printing deadlines this is later than I expected. I would like to personally thank all the groups, bands and other performers who gave their time and skills last August at the charity music festival held for Daisy and Taylor. I wonder, why do singers close their eyes when performing? A special mention for Elle who was just as puzzled as I was to see her card, the nine of hearts, with her name on it, taken from inside a sealed envelope within a zipped wallet from Afro Magic’s inside jacket pocket. Amazing! I would also like to thank the office for keeping us legal, Cllrs Christine, Wendy, Dave and Peter and, last but not least, Gill for her efforts that weekend. When did she eat and sleep? The appearance of the fire brigade was a pleasant surprise – a good job they had nothing else to do. A nice PR exercise for them and the children enjoyed the visit. Thanks to Kev at Coral Design and Print Shop on Wales Road for the two free banners we used for advertising the event. Mostly though, it’s you generous people of the parish who gave your hard earned cash to support the two girls and made it all worthwhile. We/you raised £1,310.00 which was shared between them. Thank you all. Sadly, I have to report the recent passing of two stalwarts of the parish: good friends Howard Jones and Ken Rayner. Howard was the secretary of the Wales Parish Bowling Club for many years and the driving force behind the many enjoyable bowls competitions on the recreation ground green. Ken was immensely proud of his roots in Kiveton and passionate about the village and its people. He was a man who always put the community first, served for some years as a parish councillor and continued to work for the parish after standing down from the council. Those of us who were privileged to know them will remember them with affection and gratitude. Pictured are Cllr Wendy Fowkes, Daisy with her mum, Cllr Dominic Beck, Taylor with her mum, and Cllr Gill Shaw.

A ROARING SUCCESS

Poor old Guy was quickly consumed

This year’s bonfire and fireworks display was a roaring success in more ways than one! Donations of firewood, from the builders of the new council building, R H Fullwood & Co Ltd, Hermes Ltd of Waleswood and sourced by Cllr David Carswell, resulted in a very large fire, which roared spectacularly and poor old Guy – lovingly created by Cllr Christine Carswell – was swiftly consumed by the flames. Gary Buckingham, Chris Elder and Keith Morley of Reaction Fireworks put on a breathtaking display and John Leaver of Evolution provided the coordinated musical accompaniment. The traders on the car park and entrance to the recreation ground were kept busy and the trustees, volunteers and bar staff in the village hall slaved away feeding and watering the masses and keeping everyone entertained. The children’s disco was full to capacity and everyone had a good time. Our staff – Paul Brookes and his team – were ably assisted by the

“Big Man” (aka Tony Fowkes) and they worked tirelessly together all day building the bonfire. John Vandenbosch joined them at 5 O’clock to act as ambassadors and help to ensure things ran smoothly and everyone was kept safe. Elaine Hancock provided first aid at no charge. And Phil Delaney shot the accompanying photos. We are grateful to them all. The crowd seemed bigger this year and there were more families, which was very pleasing to see. And lots of people took the time to thank us and tell us how much they had enjoyed the event. We really do appreciate your comments; it makes all the hard work worthwhile. We always look at how things went after an event to address any problems that arose and think of ways of improving the next one. We would welcome any comments you may have on things you think could be improved or ways of making the event even better. See you next year!

AUTUMN HALF TERM We

recently received some criticism on Facebook because the children’s play area on the recreation ground closed early during autumn half term. This year autumn half term fell a week later and coincided with our Green Spaces Team starting reduced hours for the winter period. Consequently, the children’s play area was locked when they finished for the day. A couple of years ago we did try operating extended hours over Easter in line with local schools holiday periods but this proved impractical due to reduced daylight hours. That however is not the main reason why the staff lock the children’s play area before they leave: it is

because in the absence of staff the vandals who seek to damage the recreation ground equipment and park furniture at every opportunity would relish the chance to trash as much of the equipment in there as they could. On Sunday 29 October, the very same weekend that the schools started their autumn half term holiday, a litter bin was damaged and the internal liner destroyed, dog bins were set on fire and attempts made to uproot one, the bench seat on the path leading to Norwood Crescent was uprooted and removed and litter, interspersed with drug wraps, condoms and glass from smashed liquor bottles, was strewn over the grass and on the skatepark. This vandalism continued throughout the week, and had the children’s play area been accessible to

END OF THE GREAT WAR On 11 November 2018 it will be exactly one hundred years since the end of what was one of the most cataclysmic events of the twentieth century. The Great War or “the war to end all wars” resulted in total in over 16 million deaths and 20 million seriously wounded on both sides. The memorial in The Square, the plaques in the churches and the chapel dotted round the village and on the wall of the Colliery Offices solemnly record the names of the men from the village and area who are in that number.

Wales Parish Council

To commemorate and remember their sacrifice the good people of Kiveton Park & Wales History Society are planning a series of events in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday on 11 November 2018. The society is in the process of establishing a working group and would welcome representatives from the churches and chapel, schools and other organisations wishing to be involved. All you have to do is nominate a representative to join the group and help with planning and delivering the events.

the culprits, we have no doubt that it would have got the same treatment. We are currently reviewing our CCTV footage with the police as it is likely that some if not all of the perpetrators will be known to them. But the police can only do so much and it is incumbent on all of us to “call out” the minority of individuals who are responsible for this behaviour, not least because paying for the damage comes out of our pockets not theirs. There is of course young children’s play equipment at two other locations in the village. One is off Stoney Bank Drive and remains open until dusk, although vandals have also damaged park furniture there, and the other is at the rear of the houses off Mansfield Road (East & South Terrace, Wales Bar), which is accessible until dark. We shall be represented on the group, which aims to hold its first meeting early in January. Just contact Cate Goodlad at the Colliery Offices or speak to any member of the history society (for details of members, please see the society’s website, www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk). The council has also signed up with Battle’s Over, a company that is coordinating the lighting of 1000 beacons, the “Beacons of Light”, at 7.00pm on 11 November 2018 throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and 14 British Overseas Territories, which still come under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the UK. The lighting of the beacon will no doubt be part of the day’s events and we hope to see you there. Further articles on plans and progress will appear in next year’s newsletters, so please keep your eyes peeled!

much more work to do, and we would greatly appreciate any more volunteers coming forward to lend a hand. If you can help, please get in touch with us on Facebook (/KivetonParkFC), Twitter (@kivo1881), email (info@ kivetonparkfc.com) or just drop by during the weekend

Nobody at the club is paid for the hours they have put in – they do it for the love of the game and their community.

On the pitch the men’s seniors have won four consecutive league games and are in the third round of the Sheffield Association Cup. Our junior section continues to do us very proud. We now have 11 boys’ and 3 girls’ teams representing our club.

As you will know by now, we have left our beloved home at Hard Lane to take up residence at Wales High School. It was a tough decision, but the move has allowed us to become an independent charity, which will be crucial for us when it comes to raising funds and building better facilities for the 200+ players we have on our books. We have had to move fast to get the playing fields up to the standard required to host so many teams. On top of the ground maintenance, we have also transported six containers on site in order to have changing rooms,

store rooms and a café which has been doing a roaring trade since opening – getting electric and water to them all has cost us a lot of time, money and effort, but we are finally getting there. As ever, we are so grateful to the help given us by volunteers, sponsors, and the High School itself in making the move happen – we have proudly represented our village for over 130 years, and the events of this summer should ensure that the club will continue for many more years to come. Although we have achieved so much in the last few months, there is still so

The girls section is growing by the week, and we hold FREE training sessions for girls of any age or ability on a Monday evening (Dinnington Comprehensive School, 6.15pm while 7.15pm). If you know a girl who is interested, please contact Gordon Johnson on 07795 201090 Finally, we will again be running our very popular Christmas raffle this year! We have an Xbox One X, iPhone 8 and many other great prizes up for grabs – you can get your tickets from any of our team coaches, online or in our café.

Local Labour Councillors 2017 Overview We have had a tremendously busy year working with local people to deliver improvements to our area, and continued on behalf of residents to resolve the many and varied individual issues raised with us. We have been particularly active during 2017 campaigning against HS2 which is still proposed to be routed through Wales – we simply think there are better alternative routes which would not blight local people and we are vehemently against the current plans.

Fund – please get in touch if you would like your group to be considered for a grant.

We continue to make small grants to local groups and organisations through our Community Leadership

Labour Cllrs Dominic Beck, Gordon Watson and Jenny Whysall.

Finally, we would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and all the best wishes for the New Year.

Mothers Union Everyone is welcome to come along for a chat and look and listen at what we do. The following are a few projects we are currently involved in: We support the Music Tots which is held every Thursday morning 9:30 – 11:30 at St John’s Room, term time only. Helpers are always required, why not pop in and see what happens at this lovely group! We will be holding a coffee morning in the New Year to

Bin shake up ! Consultation will open on Rotherham’s bin collections after the senior councillors voted to press ahead with new proposals. The shake-up is aimed at saving £1.3 million a year and will involve an annual £40-a-year charge for garden waste. The blue boxes and bags will be replaced with larger wheelie bins for recycling and new, smaller general waste bins are to be supplied.

Jesus Christ at this seasonal time of year in your local parish church. With it’s the ancient bells, lit nativity scene religiously placed outside the west door, the 1000 year old candlelit holy space whose stones and windows we instantly recognise, the huddle of families in a packed church holding one another in love. Or the familiar carols whose tunes and words we know so well, all giving a sense of peace and hope that the world might be a better place as we celebrate that GOD IS WITH US in Jesus. Jesus is the greatest gift of all and Archbishop Justin Welby is promoting the #GodWithUs campaign this Christmas. He writes, "The constant refrain of Christmas, in carols and readings, is that God is with us. He is also introducing ‘YOUR CHRISTMAS JOURNEY’ which is a series of short reflections throughout December and into early January 2018. The reflections have been written by SOUL(Food) for people who are searching for or new to faith and help us all grow in our love of God. People can receive the messages as texts, emails or on social media. Sign up and get your friends and family to join Your Christmas Journey by texting GodWithUs to 88802. Thank you to all the volunteers from church and community who will decorate the church inside and out. Also to Harthill Village Voices and our musicians for helping to make Christmas so unique. Have a blessed Christmas and heathy new year.

At our November meeting we produced Every household in Rotherham will be sent a letter as part of the eight weeks’ consultation, which will begin on Monday, November 27. The new policy is expected to be agreed by Rotherham Borough Council in February, with the changes taking effect from next autumn. Cllr Emma Hoddinott, Cabinet member for waste, said: “I appreciate that these are going to be the biggest changes we’ve had in a quite a while. “This won’t come in overnight. We want to talk to people about how this may work.”

39 gifts to give for young people who leave care and have no family support. This was a very well supported project from all areas of our community, especially as it is going to local young people. We are hoping to do this again next year. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month, at 7.30pm in St.Johns rooms, so why not come along for a cuppa, a chat and see the wonderful and rewarding work we do.

KIVETON COMMUNITY WOODLAND By Hannah Darcel Managed by The Conservation Volunteers for the Land Trust.

The Green Angels Environmental Education course run by the Land Trust started successfully with everyone enjoying their first session and keen to learn more. A range of enthusiastic participants learnt about the different aspects of environmental education and had a go at bug hunting and a scavenger hunt. A taster Forest School session with campfire cooking and den building is planned for their next session followed by natural art and craft activities and how to do pond dipping. All this will be put into practice at the end of the course when children from Kiveton Park Infants School will be coming out to the woodlands to have a go themselves. Green Gym Christmas Tree Green Gym volunteers have found a great tree for children and families to decorate over the Christmas holidays. Walk up to the top of the zig zag hill to find it. The volunteers have also helped to create a Forest School area which

is now being used by local school children and have been practicing their tree felling techniques to help thin some birch woodland. The volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the autumnal walk along the canal and are looking forward to making some Christmas reindeers and bird feeders for their final session before the festivities start. Green Gym takes place on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 9.30

to 12.30 with an additional session taking place at Dinnington Community Woodland on the first Thursday of the month. If you would like any information regarding the Green Angels Environmental Course or volunteering at Green Gym please contact Hannah at Hannah.darcel@tcv.org.uk

sessions. Linked to our theme of The Enchanted Wood, the children have visited a ‘wizard’ in the woods and have helped him to create a potion, made a willow wand and found the ‘friendship tree’, using it to create friendship bands for each other. ‘We found a wizard. He had a wand made from a

willow tree. Then we made our own wands.’ Kenzi. ‘There were strings dangling on the tree and we made them into a friendship bracelet!’ Emily During our final session before Christmas we are will be joined by a Woodland Ranger who is going to help us to build a camp fire before we decorate one of the trees together. This year Kiveton Park Infant School are taking advantage of the nearby woodland and introducing Forest Learning into our Year One curriculum. Our children love the outdoors and the woodland is such an amazing resource and is only a short walk away! Forest

Learning embraces the natural world, allowing children to explore, experiment and create, but with a focus on safety. We are very lucky and have a teacher at school who is training to be a Forest School practitioner and leading these

Research shows that learning outdoors stimulates the development of important skills such as; problem solving, resilience, team work, communication & language and emotional well-being. This approach also helps us to cover many elements of the National Curriculum in a fun and exciting way.

Community Litter Pick Saturday 14th Oct saw a 5-strong group of volunteer litter pickers step out to clean the main road through Wales of litter. It’s an activity that nearly anyone can do and brings together locals who care for and take pride in their environment. Organiser Darren Hughes echoed the feeling for all when he stated “it’s so rewarding to look back down a litterfree road and see the difference that you’ve made” “There are local people who regularly collect litter, sometimes whilst walking their dog for which we’re really grateful” said Ben Smith who helped promote the event. “However, there are many advantages to organizing a group pick which people can join in for as long or

short a time as they wish”. Equipment is provided and the collected rubbish is taken away by a council van for proper disposal. There’s great morale and participants can chat whilst they go or just get on with it, knowing the group is there to help and encourage. It’s a great family activity which helps the next generation see the value of caring for our environment and the impact of our personal actions. Ben and Darren hope to motivate and support other community-minded residents working together for the good of their neighbourhood. New volunteers are wanted, even if it’s a one-off or occasional help! The next group pick in Kiveton is planned for Saturday 16th December at 1pm, register your interest to receive updates by email to Ben Smith bensox10@gmail.com - any questions or suggestions welcome!

Charlie Blands Diary Kiveton & Wales History Society

This time we want to share some extracts of a diary written in 1930 by Kiveton Park Colliery employee Charlie Bland, who

came from North Anston. Charlie worked on the pit top controlling the sale of coal, and his diary offers an insight into the deepening depression of the 1930s with the pit often not working due to no orders or a shortage of wagons. Although limited unemployment benefit, or dole as it was known, had been in place since 1911, it only paid out after 7 days of continuous unemployment. The diary shows that it was not uncommon at the time to be ‘stood’ for a couple of days, which would have meant no money coming in. ry 1930 use of 1st Februa y a d r stood beca tu a s S m a e s l e z Friday nd Ha 2 hours on d Barnsley a o to s n e e Turner also b -60 stock. 0 no wagons, 5 ld o S . agons ne. night for w list but it was not do n o g a wanted w rd February man J T Good d n a Monday 3 ] r e hmen ll [manag m of weig te s Mr E Ha y s a cause started doubtless l il w [foreman] is h T Mark and off. eir part. th n signing on o n a e 5pm; . We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Old Colliery Offices, 6:30pm, with speakers every other month. New members always welcome.

The Great War Centenary The History Society is already looking forward to next year’s centenary of the end of World War 1. We would like to mark this important date by planning a series of events in the week leading up to November 11th and would welcome groups and societies from the village joining us. If your group would like to be involved, please contact Cate Goodlad through the History Society webpage (www.kivetonwaleshistory.co.uk) or via the Old Colliery Offices on 01909 773348.
