The Magazine for the Community by the Community

Welcome to issue 34 of the Kiveton & Wales Community Matters magazine. The weather has certainly been a bit hit and miss lately. We have a lovely week with near record temperatures leading up to Easter. Then we get snow, ice and what seems to be like never ending rain. Hopefully it will all change soon and we get the summer we all deserve. Now in our ninth year we ARE the Magazine for the community of Kiveton & Wales so beware of any imitators. OUR MAGAZINE IS RUN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COMMUNITY AND NOT FOR PRIVATE PROFIT. We have been supporting local businesess both large and small throughout our nine year history, which is why we offer advertising that is far cheaper than all other local publications.

KIVETON WOMENS CLUB Article by Margaret Gibson We are always a bit quiet during the winter months, though no doubt we shall liven up as the year progresses. On the 5th of March we held a fundraising evening for The Starlight Foundation (we are a registered charity), and on the 19th March we enjoyed an interclub visit when we entertained Calow Women’s Club. This was followed on 22nd March with Bingo and Pie and peas at Markham Hall, a North Derbyshire Association event. Also, later in the year, there will be a talk on beekeeping with honey products for sale and a speaker from the Starlight foundation when we shall present a cheque from our fund-raising. We are also busy sorting photographs out for the North Derbyshire Shield competition - Four Seasons. So you see, we shall be quite busy in the year’s first quarter! If you would like to join our club or would like any information about our up and coming events please contact 01909 562490 or 01909 771774

THANK YOU I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this issue. In particular Daniel Bowen form Carmarthen in South Wales who spent a few weeks working alongside us here at Kiveton. Also a big thank you to all our volunteers who brave all weathers to bring the Community Matters to your door.

The Lord Conyers Planners at Rotherham Borough Council recently rejected proposals to demolish the Lord Conyers in Wales square, and replace it with four three bedroom homes. The applicants Brocklebank and Co argued that the building was not of listable quality, and were of the opinion that sympathetic development for four properties is currently the only viable option for the site in the current climate. The council said inadequate information had been provided to justify demolition of the building and without it the application was considered to be harmful to the character and appearance of the square and the Wales conservation area due to the loss of this historic building.

The Apprentice

He certainly utilized some of these skills in selling his most expensive item, a guitar amplifier, for about £200 recently, and even managed to flog an asparagus steamer! However Kyle is also willing to share his tricks of the online trade, and recommends that you “upload a picture of high quality for your item, and input adequate key words that make it easier for customers to find”. It’s easy when you know…

Everybody loves to read about a local lad come good, and Kyle Wakelin of Kiveton Park has proven to be another success story at the Old Colliery Offices. Kyle, 24, recently became a fullyfledged member of staff within the Ebay-trading Kivo-Ebiz team through funding from MissionFish UK. He initially joined the team as a volunteer during the summer of 2011 having been ‘headhunted’ by Steph Hryschko, Director of Kivo-Ebiz, upon the volunteer jobs website www.do-it.org.uk. He proved to be a great asset to the team’s work during the coming months, earning himself parttime employment as an Internet Sales Assistant for 20 hours a week since the beginning of 2012. Kyle hasn’t looked back since, and I caught up with him to see how things were going… “I am enjoying my work here, where my main tasks are to research and take photos of donated items before tactically placing them online to sell, whilst also dealing with customer queries, filing all paperwork, and generally maintaining all the work we do in the office. I have found the job to be quite diverse, as receiving different items each day provides us with new challenges and freshens things up in selling various products on a daily

Steph Hryschko, who runs the project, spoke of how receiving the funding that enabled them to employ Kyle could prove to be a “great milestone that took our business to a much more profitable level”, and went on to say:

basis. And having worked in charity before, I am happy to be able to work with Ebiz towards the benefit of my own village’s community”. Kyle is also using his time at the project to develop his professional capabilities, as he is combining his work with a Level 2 NVQ in Customer Services through Doncaster College whilst enhancing other aspects of his work, stating “I have developed my teamwork, attention to detail, online selling, and imaging skills, whilst also learning how to make things more presentable and appealing to sell”.

“Kivo-Ebiz is delighted to receive a support grant from Mission Fish, and is already using it to employ an Internet Sales Assistant. Kyle was an unemployed young person who proved his competence by volunteering with us for the past 6 months and this grant gave us the opportunity to move forward with local traders and manufacturers, hopefully setting up new contracts to sell their items through the charity on Ebay”.

If you would like to join the team and volunteer with the Kivo-Ebiz online trading experts, contact Steph on 01909 770 007.

Friends of Kiveton Community Woodland The ‘Friends of Kiveton Community Woodland’ group organised a very successful litter picking session on Sunday 18th March. 12 people from the local community turned up and 23 bags of litter were collected from around the site making it a much cleaner place for everyone to enjoy. The group have also been looking at a proposal into the possibility of having horse access on site; initial plans have been considered and a route drawn up. As expected, there are people for and against the idea. If you would like to know more about the proposal and have your say then please contact Helen Conner-Walton, South Yorkshire Beat Forester, on 01623 8214476 or email enquiries.sherwood@forestry.gsi.gov.uk. The next ‘Friends of’ meeting will be on Wednesday 20th June at 6pm at the Old Colliery Offices. Everyone is welcome. A big thank you to the Rother Valley students for their hard work on site. They have been busy clearing streams, thinning trees, restoring nature areas and helping to clear up after some anti-social behaviour in the wooded area at the top of the site.

Adult Learning At The Old Colliery Offices Coffee Morning Wednesday 16th May 2012 10am -12 noon

ADULT LEARNING AT THE OLD COLLIERY OFFICES

Everone welcome, bring a friend

Our adult community learning classes, some part funded through the Skill Funding Agency and Rotherham Borough Council, others supported by the Big Lottery fund and also the Loscar Wind Farm Fund continue to be a big success, and have been delivered to over 200 members of our community since last September. So far we have delivered two Digital Imaging courses, two 12 week Computing for Beginners, a 12 week How to Set up E-mail and Use the Internet Safely course, and two 20 week Spanish Language courses (covering both Beginner and Intermediate levels). We are currently just over half way through both our 26 week Beginning Family History class, and our Researching and Recording Family History. Our second 12 week E-mail and Internet course is well underway, and so too is our How to Get the Most Out of Your Home Computer, a new course covering various aspects such as using spreadsheets, Skype, email, internet, digital imaging and more. At the begining of April we started delivering a free 10 week E-bay course. This is being delivered by the experts from Kivo-Ebiz, with more planned throughout the year. This course covers all aspects of buying and selling on E-bay, how to set up and use pay-pal, take better photographs, and write a good listing to enhance your chances of selling your goods online. All of our courses are for two hours per week, and are delivered at the Old Colliery Offices on Colliery Road in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Some are delivered in the evening with others taking place either in the morning or afternoon. Due to the fact that these courses are part funded we are able to offer them at a very low cost to the learner. The e-bay course is currently free of charge. They are open to all with no entry requirements other than a willingness to learn, with no exams to sit or any required home learning. We also throw in refreshments of tea or coffee with biscuits. All our tutors are experienced, fully qualified and very helpful. If you would like more information about any of our courses then please contact Kevin on 01909 773348, e-mail Kevin@kivetoncreative.co.uk or just call into the Old Colliery Offices.

D-PHECT & SKREEEM Year 13 students can opt to work on an Extending Project Qualification (EPQ), where they are appointed a supervisor, who guides them through each aspect of their chosen project. Universities welcome this qualification as it encourages independent learning and use of initiative. Lauren Teasdale’s EPQ project was to organise and promote a live concert with two bands performing, in order to raise money for charity. With the technical support of Oliver Davies (Y14) this highly successful event saw a full house singing and dancing the rocking sounds of both 6th form band ‘D-Phect’ and the staff band ‘Skreeem’. Through ticket sales and donations, this event raised in excess of £100 for Barnardos and Bluebell Wood. Well done to all those involved and the audience for being so enthusiastic.

Yr 8 PUPILS ENJOY ROAD SAFETY THEATRE PERFORMANCE ‘Quickfoot Media’, is a Media and Drama company based in Huddersfield who produce a variety of educational videos and performances for schools in the Yorkshire region. They recently visited Wales High School to perform a road safety play focusing on the dangers of being both a pedestrian and driver on today’s busy roads. “Responses were great to all our questions regarding road safety and we managed to have fun too! Our aim is to make them aware of the risks involved in crossing the road through theatre”. Sally A.Staunton – Presenter. Pictured above with the Quickfoot actors are Dylan Shaw, Luke Burton, Deron Whitlea and Maddie.

MOCK INTERVIEWS In order for our 6th form students to gain the relevant experience and confidence to apply for jobs and university courses, Wales High School holds a Mock Interview evening around March time every year. Students are asked what area of interest they would like to be interviewed for and the related industry professionals provide them with a very valuable one-to -one interview, as well as advice on how to succeed in the interview process. “The event is well worth the planning, as both the students and interviewers enjoy the evening. Interviewers comment on how positive the pupils are and what a pleasure it is to take part”. Mrs. B James – Careers Administrator.

FOLGARDIA

Once again, Wales High School’s skiing trip to Folgarida, in the Italian Dolomites, was a great success! Staying at the Hotel Anna- Maria, only a short walk from the gondola to take us up the mountain, students enjoyed Italian pasta - energy food - and skiing of course! Top ski instructors, accompanied each session by a member of our own teaching staff, provided expert tuition for our pupils so that by Tuesday, even the beginners were skiing well! Skiing in the UK is rarely available so to learn and develop this sport is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Next year is already booked - look out in the bulletin for details in the next few weeks!

WALES CHAPEL Article by Brenda Bradley

“Our chapel has had all the alterations done and is getting a final facelift as I write. It should all be complete by the summer if not before. Amazing considering that work wasn’t started until late summer last year. The lads who have been working on the chapel have done an amazing, thorough job. We are holding regular Sunday services which are held in the afternoon from 3:00pm. All the rehearsals for the panto were conducted in the chapel and everyone was delighted with the space, warmth and new amenities. The panto, held at the Montgomery Theatre, Sheffield proved a great success with Nick Challenger playing the Dame for the first time. They will now continue as before, the venue still being the Montgomery because of the effects, space on stage, lighting, mikes and apparatus enabling us to use, as we do, several backdrops for each of the scenes.

Week ending 18/19/20th May will see the chapel come to life with Jubilee Celebrations consisting of Wales Musical Theatre Company Choristers entertaining us together with the Worksop Circuit Choir, conducted by Mr Alan Coates along with input from our local schools. Tickets costing just £5 can be acquired by ringing Jane on 01909 515389 and I understand that for the sum of £1, during the interval tea coffee and cakes will be served. Once again friends, thank you for your support on behalf of everyone involved at Wales and hope to see you all at our future events, services, whether at home or away! I feel I should mention that the organ, I understand one of the best in the country, has been over-hauled [not that it needed much overhauling] and sounds absolutely wonderful”.

Redroad FM

Article by Trevor Grossett

Imagine a place in Kiveton Park where local people can go to play music, share information and discuss community based issues live onair, as well as streamed across the Internet, to be potentially heard around the world. Redroad FM recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary on the 27th of March 2012, having been granted a full-time license by Ofcom in March 2010. Our community radio station is the first FM radio station in Rotherham to be broadcast entirely by, and for, the local community with an emphasis on young people. We would like to give a big thank you to all the volunteers who put in many hours of their spare time to ensure that a cross-section of music , information and fun is aired. Redroad FM offers media training and support for young people aged 8-19, providing valuable work experience within the media industry and giving young people the confidence to use their initiative and work as part of a team. Former young presenters at Redroad FM have progressed into successful careers in the media, including positions at Warner Brothers and Galaxy FM, as well as entering university and college to enrol upon courses in journalism and media. Redroad FM continues to go from strength to strength, broadcasting across South Rotherham on 102.4 FM and across the world through the internet, with everincreasing listenership and project work within the community helping the station to reach out to local people of all backgrounds. One of our listeners Angela says: “You make my day! Thank you so much for making me laugh. I figure that if I listen to you every week I will be in good health as laughter is always the best medicine!” For further information, visit the Redroad FM website at

SAVAGE IN STEEL Lifelong local campaigner Colin Savage has been rewarded for his tireless contributions to the area by being immortalised in steel as part of a national art project.

Mr. Savage, 74, of Kiveton had previously worked in the local steel industry for 33 years, and is now one of three portrait figures aptly cut from steel sheet standing alongside a bench that has been installed upon the national cycle track in Killamarsh. The characters were chosen by a vote in each community – Rotherham, Derbyshire and Sheffield – and were judged upon their contribution to the Savage Clinton Woods life of the community.

A delighted Mr. Savage said he was “speechless” having won the Rotherham vote, saying “I didn’t think I’d beat Howard Webb, the Premier League referee, although I’ve been told he was pleased that I did win it. The figures are so life-like, it’s amazing how similar they are. I just hope none of the scrap merchants will come along and take me down!” He went on to comment: “It is absolutely brilliant and is a great honour for both myself and Wales Parish Council in particular. The Council has supported me for many years and actually nominated me for the vote.

He reiterated his support for the Trust, saying “The village should support this as it’s the prime source of support for the community, their volunteers’ work needs to be appreciated and the property looked after”.

Chesterfield Canal Trust Our schedule has gradually been filling up with all sorts of events of late. We have recently held two concerts at Hollingwood Hub, at our new base near Staveley. On Wednesday March 7th we welcomed Hérétique, an Anglo-French group with an energetic mix of vocals, accordion, bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, guitar and recorder. On Wednesday March 21st, we were entertained by Hilary James and Simon Mayor. With Hilary’s stunning voice and wonderful Mandobass (a giant mandolin) complemented by Simon’s finger-flying talent on just about every string instrument going, this proved to be a fantastically varied evening. Following the success of our Craft Days on the 4th of March and the 7th, of April, we will be holding another Craft Day on May 12th, where amateur enthusiasts can show off their work and possibly sell some as well. On Monday 4th June, we have an exhibition celebrating the 120th Anniversary of the opening of the railway line between Sheffield and Chesterfield through Hollingwood, which eventually became the Great Central Railway. In the evening Ken Grainger will be giving a talk about the GCR. On Saturday and Sunday June 30th and July 1st, we are holding our Festival at the new Staveley Town Basin. This promises to be a superb event, including three tripboats. On the Saturday night, we will have a concert in the Entertainment Marquee, featuring The Swing Commanders. COMMUNITY MATTERS

KIVETON PARK FOOTBALL CLUB Established 1892 In recent years Kiveton Park and Todwick juniors football clubs amalgamated to become one club, therefore providing football opportunities for all from the age of 5 (our acadamy) all the way through to the under 18’s, our reserves and the first team. The two senior teams play on Saturdays at the Hard Lane ground in the Central Midlands League. The first team have had a reasonably good year so far currently 8th out of 17 teams. All of our players are local lads with the furthest away coming from Worksop! None of our players are paid unlike some other clubs in our league. We are currently striving to improve the facilities at Hard Lane and have embarked on a ground improvement project.

April 2012 We have so far fitted new showers, secured the ground with palisade fencing and re-painted the stand. There is much work to be done but finances dictate to what extent and speed the improvements can be done. We recently held a fundraising event at the Dinnington Resourse centre, a Sports evening with ex pro speaker John Berresford (Newcastle Utd) and comedian Jimmy Carroll, which helped raise much needed funds. The junior section is always looking for helpers and players and all are welcome. Support your local football club that has been in existence since 1892 (with the odd hiccup along the way)

Visit our website www.kivetonparkfc.co.uk to read all about our history, or find out about our next home game and come along and cheer us on.

WALESWOOD SPORTS CRICKET CLUB Everyone at Waleswood.S.C.C is looking forward to the challenges ahead in our 2012 league campaign. The 1st team will play in Bassetlaw Division 3 after back to back promotions with the 2nd team in Division 7, whilst the Junior section will compete in both the Bassetlaw and Sheffield leagues at U11 and U13. Outdoor nets will commence in April and information will be posted on our website www.waleswoodcricketclub.org.uk for both senior and junior nights. We have withdrawn from the Mansfield Sunday league to concentrate on friendly matches to involve our juniors along with a few senior players. Any new players looking for a friendly cricket club at both senior and junior levels are most welcome, and information on the playing side can be obtained by contacting our coaches Simon Cope 07875 779 114 or Gary Lomas 07851 216 361 who will be only too pleased to help. The improved facilities at the club are available to both playing and non-playing members so if you require further information rejoining the club please contact our General Secretary Keith Board on 01909770787 and again he will be happy to answer any questions you have about the club.

KIVETON PARK COLLIERY CRICKET CLUB Kiveton Park Colliery Cricket Club began life back in the Bassetlaw Championship on the 21st of April against Gainsborough side Marshalls. After relegation from the Nottinghamshire Premier League in 2011 Kiveton are eager to bounce back at the first attempt. Last season’s Premier League experience should inspire the club to push for a return at the first available opportunity and this season, particularly with the return of local derbies against arch rivals Anston and newly promoted Harthill, looks set to be an exciting one. The club are once again led by skipper Lee Brooks and have also acquired the services of allrounder, and Bassetlaw League captain, Matt Hall from Glapwell and talented wicketkeeper batsman Adam Whiteley from Premier League outfit Mansfield Hosiery Mills. These two players, in addition to the already talented squad, will undoubtedly aid Kiveton’s promotion push. The club are also looking to their second team to build on last season’s promising year with their own push for promotion. Along with the continued success of a multitude of age groups at youth level 2012 promises to be a successful season once again. The club welcomes all support from the local community, particularly on match days, and all new members are welcome. For further information on any aspect of the club please contact

Richard Grainger on 07714 205 476 or email richg1867@hotmail.com For a full fixture list for the 2012 season please visit our website

KIVETON & WALES REMEMBERING OUR WAR TIME HEROES THROUGH POETRY The following poem was penned by William Hampson of Waleswood, and has been kindly supplied by Mr Barry Fairbrother of Louth in Lincolnshire. ‘The Lads Have Left The Village’ recalls the will and bravery of the local men that left Kiveton Park and Wales to go and fight during the First World War.

THE LADS HAVE LEFT THE VILLAGE by William Hampson The lads have left the village and the girls do all they can, They remember well the parting when each said “I’ll be a man, I can hear the bugles calling, it haunts me day and night, I’ll go beside my comrades, till I join them in the fight”.

And Carlysle, though a keeper of the peace and wearing blue Said, “I’ll change my garb again and I’ll wear khaki too”, And Billy Wooton said “I’ve served my King and Queen before And to show that I’m a Briton true, I’ll go and serve once more”.

“I know the parting grieves you, it grieves me just the same But I’d rather die beside my pal than linger here in shame, My chums are falling one by one, the strain’s to hard to bear, I’ll go and march beside them and of the fighting take my share”.

George Groves said “I intend to fight, I’ll make the blighters dance, I’ll go and fight in Belgium, Salonica or France”, George Bailey went, for he was bent on joining in the fight But failed to pass the final test all through defective sight.

Young Herbert Barks was the first to go, he was the first to fall, He did not hesitate a mo’ to answer duty’s call. And Mannie, he’s a Briton true, just fancy, one to one It wouldn’t take him half a tick to strafe a blooming Hun.

Bill Staniland joined up and fought through many a bloody battle But Billy doesn’t say a deal, he ain’t a lot of rattle, Alf Fletcher said “Why Bill old pal, don’t think I’m staying here No, no, we’ll bang off side by side, no Germans do I fear”.

If you mentioned Hun to Sago, it would nearly drive him wild Said he, “The dogs don’t ought to live, who slay a little child”, Bill Bradwell said, “You’re right Old Boy, I’ll not stay here alone, I think against such dirty hogs, we two can hold our own”.

And Captain Cook, as true as steel, he’s neither nesh nor tender And if it comes to do or die he’ll die before surrender, We have a Short, though six foot long, a sniper of renown And when a German lifts his head, he’ll quickly knock it down.

Jim Cartwright left a happy home let none this lad condemn He’s proved himself a hero brave and won the DCM, Will Blewitt went and he was sent to France with other batches And he, while serving under French was mentioned in despatches.

Fred Lister’s trying like the rest the victory to gain, He says he couldn’t stay at home and see little children slain, There’s Cargill, he’s a reckless blade, his duty he’ll not shirk And he won’t care a button whether it’s Austrian, Hun or Turk.

To Tommy Ling let credit give, this lad he didn’t linger, He went and helped to strafe the Huns though minus of a finger, And Jimmy Turne said “I’m off, though I know it’s not all roses But when I get amongst the swine, there’ll be some broken noses”.

If ever Billy Stevenson on a German sets his paw And he holla’s out “O kamrad”, why he’ll break his bally jaw, And Hawkins, he is just as bad, this chap will never flinch, He’d face a dozen Germans and he wouldn’t budge an inch.

When Ernest Blewitt went he said “I fear no shell or bomb”, But sad to state he met his fate and now lies on the Somme, And Billy Penn said “I’ll go too, along with my pal Ern’, I’d love to battle by his side and with him take my turn”.

Young Golding, he is very brave and also very cunning, Now he is just the sort of chap to take a blooming Hun in, Another brave old Tulip’s gone, they call him Staffy Joe, Excuse the phrase but this old cock will face the fiercest foe.

Young Bailey said “Though young and strong I never courted strife I love my King and country and for them I’d stake my life”, And inoffensive Ian Hague was as willing as the rest, Said he “I’m not a hefty chap but I’ll go and do my best”.

There’s Johnson, Tate and Tomlinson, Cheetham, Crunt and Fry, Did these lads shirk their duty, no they joined, to do or die, Like Froggatt, Oakes and Gregory, George Ellis, Jakes, McQuinn, These lads have battle bravely and there motto’s “Fight to win”.

Fred Mortimer though very young was no less true and brave He fought and bled and died and now lies in a hero’s grave, Bruce Radford is another lad that couldn’t stay away, He’s seen some heavy fighting since he entered in the fray.

And Harry Martin’s staunch and true, he never was a cur, This brave lad’s risen from the ranks to be an officer Saxby and Hoare could not stay here to grin like Cheshire cats, When these lads get amongst the Huns, they made them squeal like rats.

Ted Scrimshaw is a steady chap, he considered well his plan And then at last resolved to go and prove himself a man, There’s brave old General Ginger Dunn who holloa’d “Fish alive”, When he comes hawking fish again, oh won’t the people thrive.

The Cenotaph in Wales Square where many of the names in the poem are listed

There’s Joby always blithe and gay, as happy as a lark, He said, “I’ll go and help to bite, and not stay here to bark”’ Another Godfrey’s gone as well, his Christian name is Bruce, This lad will fight like fury, he’ll not hoist the flag of truce.

Another brave young Stevenson, is fighting with his brother, They say they’ll battle unto death to shield their dear old mother, We’ve a lamb by name and nature but he’s a terror to the Huns He stood the test just like the rest against their mighty guns.

HISTORY SOCIETY Our Reggie’s buckled to at last, he’s left some weeping maids, Said he, “I hope before I land, the Huns are all in Hades”, Kind friends, excuse this simple joke, I couldn’t cast disdain Before you read these lines he may be numbered with the slain. There’s Mullins of the bantam breed though he’s been wounded twice When e’re he sees a big fat Hun, he’s on him in a trice, So when the lads return again into our little town We’ll lathe their parched and husky throats with nut and oxo brown. And then we’ll all join hand in hand and sing the old refrain, “Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot” in reverence to the slain, To all you other brave lads who are not mentioned in the jumble, If you’ll only take things in good heart, it would suit Auld Will, your humble.

The Lads marching through Kiveton as they are about to take the Kings Shillling and march off to war

KIVETON GIRLS CHOIR Mrs Sylvia Fretwell and Mrs Marguerite Slack, the wife of the local chiropodist, formed the Kiveton Girls Choir during the early 1950s. Mrs Slack organised the choir and Mrs Fretwell accompanied the girls on the piano. The girls’ uniforms were pale blue and were tailored, in the main, by Kathleen Draycott’s mother, Doris, with help from other parents in the group. Formed in 1951 the group of girls sang together until 1954 when Jennifer Holland (nee Wyatt) was their secretary. The choir usually performed in the concert room of Kiveton Park Methodist Chapel but also toured other venues on the Methodist circuit where they performed a repertoire of songs including many composed by Ivor Novello. Other popular melodies included songs from the musicals “Carousel”and “Oklahoma” as well as such classics as Barcarolle and an Elizabethian Serenade. They also made time to perform the then popular “Shrimpboats” and “Red Sails in the Sunset”

From Left to Right, Back Row; Barbara Illsley, Ann Mosley, Ann Fretwell, Norma Bullivant, Marie Hicklin, Mary Crookes, Gloria Tye, Brenda Bell, Kathleen Draycott, Marie Askew, Margaret Leary, Norma Chambers, Pauline Hallam, Ann Bloodworth.

If you were part of the choir, or went to any of their concerts please contact the Kiveton & Wales History Society with your memories on 01909 773 712

2nd Row; Marion Stewartson, Maureen Cousins, Mildred Clark, Margaret Tristram, Sylvia Fletcher, Sheila Biggins, Beryl Jenkins, Pamela Walshaw, Christine Wood, Josephine Middleton, Margaret Waller, June Cooper, Margaret Deakin, Jennifer Wyatt.

Kiveton and Wales History Society meet at the Old Colliery Offices, Kiveton Park on the third Thursday of every month at 6 30 pm. We have a guest speaker every alternate month and all are made welcome.

1st Row; Valerie Hutton, Sadie Lebond, Margaret Mallender, Ann Stimson, June Snalune, Jill Fretwell, Mrs Sylvia Fretwell, Mrs Marguerite Slack, Joan Platts, Jean Evans, Sandra Hewitt, Ann Woodall, June Woodall. Front Row; Janet Hinchcliffe, Judith Holroyd, Jane Sayles, Karen Tristrim, Eileen Cousins, Maureen Spurr, Dorothy Dennis, Gillian Spencer, Valerie Spencer.

The Kiveton and Wales History Society would like to thank the members of the public who responded to the appeal to name the unnamed mystery girl on the back row of the Kiveton Park Girls Choir. In particular, our thanks go to Mrs M Grace and Mrs J Stewartson who identified Barbara Illsley, as the unidentified choristers. Our thanks also go to Mrs S.Fletcher who identified Sheila Biggins. Margaret Youle nee Mallender, a member of the choir wrote, “I remember when we had one concert the opening song was “Life is nothing without music”, which became our signature tune. At the end of each performance we sand “God be with you till we meet again”. Mrs Slack was always the compere and was always amusing in giving a monologue or a funny quip! We all wore blue dresses with a white collar. Quite often I would perform a comical song with Margaret Clark who sadly passed away about twenty years ago. Just silly fun! “ KIVETON PARK AND WALES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST
