» ASK THE DOC I am a decent amateur golfer and regularly compete in a traveling league. I have been dealing with a shooting pain that radiates down my right leg. I have been diagnosed with a labral tear in my hip. I know I need to be treated, but I’m afraid that after surgery I won’t be able to continue playing competitive golf. What is the treatment and recovery time for labral tears and will I be able to return to golfing at the same level? Answer from Dr. Shane Nho, hip arthroscopy orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush: Labral tears are common in competitive golfers because of the constant hip motion required to swing the golf club. A tear in the labrum, which is a protective cartilage in the hip joint, is usually caused by a femoral acetabular impingement (FAI). In some people, the bones of the hip have an abnormal shape and don’t fit together perfectly. This can result in bone spurs, which cause the bones to hit against one another rather than to move smoothly. After years of repetitive motion, this can result in the tearing of the labrum, which can be very painful and affect mobility. Hip arthroscopy is usually the treatment to repair the torn labrum and remove the bone spurs, which will improve the movement of the hip joint. Although the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, the recovery and rehabilitation time differ depending on the severity of the condition. Generally, complete recovery after hip arthroscopy is about six months. I recently treated 2008 Illinois Open champion and pro golfer Joe Emerich, who is playing golf again. He had a labral tear and significant damage inside his hip joint. I performed hip arthroscopy and he is now pain free and back on the course.

To learn more about Joe’s injury and recovery, watch the video above from the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush YouTube channel. 4 | CHICAGO DISTRICT GOLFER DIGITAL EXTRA

This year’s event will take place June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Belgium’s Thomas Detry was the sole selection with local ties, securing the final spot based on Palmer Cup Ranking Points for the Europeans. Detry is a junior at the University of Illinois and was a member of last year’s victorious European side, netting three points. The teams will compete in foursome and four-ball matches on Thursday, followed by singles matches on both Friday and Saturday. Recognition, Inspiration and News from the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation

Guest Essay: The Opportunities Provided By Carolyn Nagle

Carolyn Nagle

Editor’s Note: Naperville resident Carolyn Nagle is in her sixth year as a member of the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation Board of Directors. She also serves as the executive director of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association.

early 25 years ago, Sunshine Through Golf Foundation trustee Keith Frankland and I served together on the Illinois Park and Recreation Association Board of Directors, sharing both professional friendship and a passion to help people fulfill their leisure interests. Although

our roles involved different specialty areas, our goals were similar in that we wanted to provide opportunities for all individuals to live active, healthy, and fulfilled lives through the participation in various recreation activities. With Keith in the park district arena and me in the special recreation association world, our paths often crossed. So when Keith called me a few years back to ask me to lunch to talk about an opportunity, I was curious to learn just what Mr. Frankland had in mind. Little did I know that Keith was setting the framework to have me become

involved in the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation Board of Directors. The Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA), the agency for which I serve as the Executive Director, had been participating in the Sunshine Camps for several years. These camps were viewed by many of our participants, families and staff as one of their favorite activities offered by FVSRA. While Keith could not have found a bigger believer and supporter of the Foundation, I am certain he could have found a better golfer to become involved with the STGF Board. He apparently had missed or perhaps looked the other way during

How the Game has Helped Him: Jeff had lost touch with the game and stopped golfing for a number of years, and did not get out of the house much due to his disability. When he realized that Hines VA Hospital offers a golf program through RevelationGolf, he was excited to participate. He originally thought that it was going to be just on a putting green, but was blown away by how in-depth the program was with teaching the game and also helping with physical therapy while being out on the golf course.

Premier course, limited field, great meals, highend tee gifts - all for a cause! The 15th Sunshine Through Golf Foundation Outing will be held June 1 at Briarwood Country Club. To register a foursome, contact Brittany Ottolini at bottolini@cdga.org or (630) 257-2005.

Golfing Goals: With the help of RevelationGolf, Jeff says he wants to get more involved in the game. His next goal is to play in the National Veterans TEE Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa this September.

Greatest Golf Memory: Still to this day, Jeff remembers one of the best opening holes he has had. On a 9-hole golf course, he hit his first shot on the par-3 21 yards short of the green. He took out his wedge and proceeded to chip the ball right in the hole for a birdie. He says he knew then how much he loved golf and wanted to get better so he could experience more of that feeling.

Those who have played in the Sunshine Through Golf Outing have grown accustomed to the event’s luxuries, such as golf at a premier course, a limited field, premier tee gift package, and much more. What is now tradition, however, was once a unique vision by two men. More than 15 years ago, Sheldon Solow and Tom Allison were at the beginning of their stints as CDGA Blue Coats. Both had previously spent time running the Chicago March of Dimes golf outing, with Solow serving as chairman. Thus, Solow and Allison were approached to help the Foundation find more ways to fundraise. “We both came to the conclusion that a golf tournament made sense,” Solow recalled. The March of Dimes outing, like most other golf outings at that time, had been run with a low price point, lots of golfers on the course, and various sales opportunities throughout the round. Solow and Allison wanted to buck that trend. “We decided that, while that was one model,

it wasn’t very satisfying,” Solow said. “We decided to try to do it differently.” Solow and Allison would charge a premium for individuals and groups wishing to play, but make the day worthy of the higher cost. Exceptional golf courses, limited field, exquisite

meals, unique tee gifts – all the characteristics that make the event great today – were what Solow and Allison originally used to set it apart. “We were trying to make it a very lovely day,” Solow said. Individuals and organizations loved the concept and still do, as demonstrated by the nearly $2 million raised for the Foundation in the Outing’s first 14 years. Past courses for the event have included inaugural host Rich Harvest Farms, Shoreacres, Beverly, Exmoor, and Knollwood. This year’s Outing will be June 1 at Briarwood Country Club in Deerfield, Solow’s home club. “I’m very excited about us having the opportunity to show our club to a lot of our friends who have supported the Foundation,” Solow said. I soon learned that, while the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation Board of Directors does indeed include some skilled golfers, that is not the reason why these individuals have committed themselves to the Foundation. Rather, the love of the game and what the game can bring to all individuals, with or without special needs, is the drive behind the Board members’ desire to serve and to ensure that the many STGF services are not only sustained but continue to meet the varied needs of those special individuals served.

golfers is made possible through the Foundation’s Play With a Pro Day. What do these Sunshine Through Golf camp program opportunities truly bring to the individuals with special needs? The same benefits as any golfer; the opportunity to learn and develop a new skill, to learn how to adapt a stroke, swing, drive, or putt to make it work best for one’s self. The opportunity to make new friends, to share time with friends, develop confidence, to compete, to have fun, to reduce stress. The opportunity to be part of a team, to relax, to exercise, to assist in rehabilitation, to learn how to accept defeat, to learn to win, to keep score. The opportunity to enhance golf course etiquette skills and for some, to do something they never thought they might do again. Identifying all these benefits truly helps me understand what my husband (the golfer) means when he says “there is much that is accomplished on the golf course.” I would definitely agree, but I must add that for individuals with special needs, there would not be much accomplished at all, without the opportunities made possible by the Sunshine Through Golf Foundation.

Turfgrass Scouting Report Each week, the CDGA’s turfgrass staff assembles the Scouting Report, a breakdown of climate, turf management strategies and insight on insects, weeds and diseases that are affecting turf conditions at District golf courses. See below the most recent edition, as well as a way to subscribe to the weekly updates.

Chicago District Golf Association Scouting Report 5-3-15 This week has seen a complete change in conditions and almost a return to the favorable weather from two weeks ago as the climate became sunny, dry and almost warm enough to really start seeing bentgrass pop. A majority of courses will have put out at least one of their DMI applications at this stage and the rest will be thinking hard about it. This weekend we should see some of the highest temperatures of the year so far and it will help to get any aeration holes filled in and turf showing recovery. Surfaces are generally fine – low spots and areas that suffered crown hydration have not truly filled in yet as temperatures have not helped seed to germinate – unless people used the creeping red fescue idea. Weeds have certainly popped up with plenty of dandelion to be seen – 2,4-D will fix a lot of those problems – but a fall control application will be far more effective going forward. A majority of courses will have put out their first application of fairy ring control at this stage and some may be giving consideration to a second application given the forecast that is coming for the early part of this upcoming week. We have certainly past the proxy primo timing while some of the courses further south may be seeing first generation of black turfgrass ataenius egg laying. Large patch has certainly fired up further south with some serious injury beginning to show up. The ITF/MAGCS spring golf event is coming up soon at Biltmore CC – it’s your association so get out there and support it – while of course praying for good weather! Climate: Conditions at Sunshine Course have been reflective of this week in the Chicago area in general. Temperatures were more roller coasters like and they certainly would not have helped some of the cultivars like L-93 creeping bentgrass to wake up. Soil temperatures have gotten back to the 60 °F mark (Figure 1), but based on data we have seen from the northwest side of the city we may be as much as 10 °F ahead of that area. The morning lows in the 30’s are not helping however and a wet forecast is foreboding for next week.

Following a series of visits to Pinehurst, where Taggert experienced Donald Ross’ work, Taggart realized he needed to bring the top course designer of his generation to French Lick Resort where he also dreamed of hosting a national tournament. In 1917, Taggert and Crawford Fairbanks purchased a piece of land about three miles from downtown French Lick and invited Ross to visit the site and create a championship layout. Most of the famous courses by Ross at the time were built for private clubs, but Taggart was set on him creating that type of course for his resort guests. Today, the course is still one of only two Ross courses open to the public in the state of Indiana.

Dye said the property was as good for golf as any he has worked on. “I have spent the past five decades designing golf courses all over the world, including courses on great coastal sites,” Dye explains. “This new course at French Lick Resort has brought great excitement to Alice and me because the course is on arguably the best inland site I have ever worked on.” At a monstrous 8,102 yards from the professional tees, or a more manageable 6,701 yards from the blue set, the par-72 course is, in typical Dye fashion, a test for scratch and bogey golfers alike. This combination is a spectacular opportunity for golfers to experience two of the best designers who ever shaped beautiful landscapes into golf courses.

Entertainment While the golf is great, it’s the accommodations and entertainment options that put French Lick Resort over the top. The resort recently underwent a historic $600 million restoration and the casino development project is set upon 3,000 acres of scenic grounds. It encompasses

both the French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel, located about a mile apart, which have both been fully restored to their original sophistication and luxury. The casino was built adjacent to the French Lick hotel and opened in 2008. The West Baden Springs property, with its massive dome, re-opened as a hotel for the first time since 1932.

The hotels combine for 689 rooms and free shuttle buses connect all amenities. There also are two destination spas with a 36 treatment rooms, over 51,000 square feet of gaming space, and a variety of dining and entertainment options. Visit www.frenchlick.com for more info.
