FIT FOR GOLF: HIP STRETCH

Hip rotation is an integral part of the golf swing. In the video below, Joe Estes from the Athletico Golf Performance Center demonstrates a stretch that will strengthen your piriformis muscle, which drives hip rotation, and can be done at home or in the office. Athletico’s Golf Performance Center is a unique facility that houses orthopedic rehabilitation and year-round golf training with 3-D technology and golf fitness equipment under one roof. For more information, call (630) 572-9700.

GOLF TIP: DRIVER SETUP

Many golfers utilize the same setup, regardless of what club they are using. However, as Dan Kochevar from Oak Brook Golf Club explains below, a specific setup should be used when using a driver to get the best results.

ASK THE DOCS

For physical education teacher Gail Pistello, physical activities like golf are an integral part of her life. However, that was put in jeopardy when, at the age of 52, she began to have pain in her groin muscle. Pistello initially thought the pain was from a pulled groin, but it eventually went down the side of her leg and was so severe that she could not sleep at night, let alone golf. Pistello was suffering from hip arthritis. After non-operative rehabilitation techniques were attempted, she underwent a hip replacement surgery with Dr. Scott Sporer from Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. In the video below, see how the procedure easily and successfully helped Gail return to the golf course and all the activities she enjoys. This information is intended only for general public education and doesn’t serve as a substitute for direct medical advice. Tournament Preview

Back for More After successful visits in 2012 and 2014, the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid returns to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Harbor Shores in southwest Michigan

Harbor Shores is already establishing a championship pedigree. Despite opening less than six years ago, the Benton Harbor, Mich., facility is preparing to host its third major championship, as the world’s top seniors will compete in the 77th Senior PGA Championship May 24-29. Harbor Shores also hosted the event in 2012 and 2014, and will host in 2018.

Field Just 90 minutes from Chicago, this event presents CDGA members with the opportunity to see some of golf’s legends up close and personal. Colin Montgomerie is the event’s two-time defending champion, with his victory in 2014 at Harbor Shores marking his first ever in the United States. Playing in his first Senior PGA Championship will be John Daly, who recently turned 50 and debuted on the Champions Tour. Six World Golf Hall of Famers will be competing - Montgomeire, Fred Couples, Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle and Mark O’Meara - in addition to other notables like Illinois native Todd Hamilton. Course

Spectator Info

Traversing Lake Michigan, the Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, rolling hills, ravines and a hardwood forest, Harbor Shores gives both golfers and spectators an enjoyable experience. Over 3 million square feet of dilapidated buildings were demolished and over 140,000 tons of waste material was removed to create the serene setting prior to its opening in July of 2010.

While the main attraction will be the star-studded field competing for the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy, spectators have many other opportunities as well. These include food trucks featuring local cuisine, luxury seating upgrade options, new bleachers behind the 17th green, a “Field of Flags” and much more.

The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is a par-71 layout that plays from 6,852 yards from the back tees, but also features four other tee sets for players of varying skill levels.

Daily general admission ticket options range from $15 for practice rounds to $25 for competitive rounds. Juniors age 17 and under accompanied by a ticketed adult and military personnel receive free admission.

Holes: 18 Par: 72 Yardage: Ranges from 6,762 to 5,609 Year Opened: 1984 More wooded than its counterparts, many consider the South Course Eagle Ridge’s biggest challenge to golfers. The Main Lodge features traditional hotel suites, while houses and villas with up to six bedrooms are available to rent.
