FIT FOR GOLF

Maintaining your fitness throughout the golf offseason is crucial to playing well when the warm weather hits. The video below features a demonstration of the squat press, an exercise designed to strengthen the quads, glutes and core. Athletico’s Golf Performance Center is a unique facility that houses orthopedic rehabilitation and year-round golf training with 3-D technology and golf fitness equipment under one roof. For more information, call (630) 572-9700.

GOLF TIP

The golf offseason is a good time to make sure you are using the correct setup mechanics. As Ed Stevenson from Dupage Golf demonstrates in this video below, an athletic stance at address is integral to success.

ASK THE DOCS

Arthritis in the knee can be debilitating to not only an individual’s golf game, but everyday life as well. While total knee replacements are sometimes thought of as a procedure for the elderly, they actually are equally effective for younger patients who suffer from arthritis in at least two compartments of the knee. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 700,000 knee arthroplasty surgeries are performed each each year in the United States. In the video below, Dr. Tad Gerlinger, Dr. Joshua Jacobs and Dr. Richard Berger, physicians from Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, discuss the facility’s highly-advanced minimally invasive total knee replacement operation and how it can help you eliminate pain on the golf course and in everyday life. This information is intended only for general public education and doesn’t serve as a substitute for direct medical advice. This information should not replace necessary medical consultations with a qualified orthopedic physician. For more information about Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR), visit rushortho.com. USGA CHANGES

On January 1, 2016, a number of changes went into effect for both the Rules of Golf and USGA Handicap System. The CDGA administers the Rules of Golf and handicap system as defined by the USGA, so members will be expected to abide by the new policies.

Rules Changes

As a culmination of the normal four-year review cycle by the USGA and The R&A, significant changes were made to the Rules of Golf for 2016, including: • Withdrawal of Rule on Ball Moving After Address - Rule 18-2b (Ball Moving after Address) has been withdrawn. This means that if a ball at rest moves after the player addresses it, the player is no longer automatically deemed to have caused the ball to move. A one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 will be applied only when the facts show that the player has caused the ball to move. • Prohibition on Anchoring the Club While Making a Stroke - As announced in May 2013, the new Rule 14-1b (Anchoring the Club) prohibits anchoring the club either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point” in making a stroke. The penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. • Modification of Penalty for a Single Impermissible Use of Artificial Devices or Equipment - The penalty for a player’s first breach of Rule 14-3 (Artificial Devices, Unusual Equipment and Abnormal Use of Equipment) during the round has been reduced from disqualification to loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. The penalty for any subsequent breach of Rule 14-3 will continue to be disqualification. More information at USGA.ORG/RULES

Handicap Changes

“The USGA Handicap System is constantly evolving to ensure that the System works for the game today and tomorrow,” said Steven Edmondson, the USGA’s managing director of Handicapping & Course Rating. “As we examine the game domestically and globally, these revisions support the integrity and reliability that millions of players around the world expect of this System. We continue to explore substantive changes as we work toward a World Handicap System in the years ahead.” The USGA made six significant changes to its handicap system, most notably: • Playing alone and necessary peer review: To further support the key System premise of peer review, scores made while playing alone will no longer be acceptable for handicap purposes. This change underscores the importance of providing full and accurate information regarding a player’s potential scoring ability, and the ability of other players to form a reasonable basis for supporting or disputing a posted score. • Anchoring and posting: A new reference concerns a player who anchors the club while making a stroke during a round and fails to apply the appropriate penalty. Since the score would not be reflected as playing under the Rules of Golf, it would be unacceptable for handicap purposes. More information at USGA.ORG/HANDICAPPING

Moved back a week from when it has been contested the three previous years, the 86th Illinois State Amateur Championship will be held July 19-21 at St. Charles Country Club. This will be the first visit to St. Charles since 1945 for the state’s top amateur event, when long-hitting Harold Foreman, Jr. of Lake Shore won the second of his back-to-back titles defeating U.S. Army Sergeant Walter Burkemo, a war hero from Evanston. Known as “Big Harold”, Foreman used the flat stick to gain his advantage, tallying 11 one-putt greens in the final 34 holes, defeating Burkemo 4 and 2 in the championship, then played at match play.

Fittingly, the Association’s oldest event, the 97th CDGA Amateur Championship, will visit one of the District’s oldest courses, Calumet Country Club in Homewood, June 27-30. First contested in 1914, the match play event has been played at the 114-year-old club three previous times, most-recently in 1947.

“St. Charles has a classic country club layout with tight tree-lined fairways and many small greens,” said CDGA

Four qualifiers for the Championship will be held in late May and early June, beginning May 23.

Qualifying for the Championship will begin June 7 and run through the end of June.

“Calumet is a vintage Donald Ross design with very challenging greens and narrow fairways,” Scillia said. “Staying in the fairway and placing it in the correct quadrant of the green will be essential. It will be great for match play with some risk-reward holes.”
