QUESTION: Lately when I swing a club, I have pain on the inner side of my elbow and it radiates into my forearm. My primary care doctor said it is probably “golfer’s elbow.” I want to get back on the course soon, what should I do? ANSWER from Dr. Robert Wysocki, orthopaedic surgeon, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Minimally Invasive Hand, Wrist & Elbow Institute: Golfer’s elbow (also known as tennis elbow) is a condition where pain occurs in the tendons of your forearm muscles, which attach to the inside of your elbow. The pain often is the result of overuse of the elbow caused by swinging a golf club or tennis racquet, but can also be caused by the repetitive hand and elbow movements of laborers or construction workers. The symptoms can be sudden or gradual and often spread to the forearm or wrist. More severe symptoms include elbow stiffness, weakness, numbness or tingling that radiates into the ring and little finger if the ulnar nerve (which runs on the inside of the elbow) is affected. In most cases, golfer’s elbow can be treated by limiting activities that involve bending the elbow, applying ice to the affected area and by using anti-inflammatory medications. Many patients also find a wrist or foreman brace reduces the pain. However, if the symptoms don’t go away in a few weeks, or if the elbow doesn’t bend properly, looks deformed or becomes hot and inflamed, you should seek help from a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treating hand, wrist and elbow conditions. If symptoms don’t get better in six months, your physician may recommend cortisone injections, which often help on a temporary basis. Surgery is rarely used to treat golfer’s elbow unless symptoms don’t respond to more conservative treatments within six months. At Rush University Medical Center, we are also exploring the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, which involves drawing a small amount of your blood, spinning it and administering it into the affected area. More studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of PRPs.

CHANGES AT THE TOP
The state’s professional organization and junior golf authority both recently underwent leadership changes in Illinois. The dominoes began to fall this spring when long-time Illinois PGA Executive Director Michael Miller resigned to take a similar post with the Southwest PGA Section in Arizona. After a summer-long search, the Illinois PGA found their new leader in Illinois Junior Golf Association Executive Director Carrie Williams. By taking over the top post at the IPGA, Williams became the third woman leading a PGA section in the United States and returned to an organization for which Carrie Williams she served as assistant executive director for 6 years prior to taking her IJGA post.

With Williams’ departure, the IJGA looked no further than Associate Executive Director Jordan Abdel-Haq, tapping the Chicago native to become the Association’s fourth executive director in its nearly 50-year history. Abdel-Haq, a University of Illinois graduate, has spent 5 years with the IJGA in a Playing Member Services role and as Associate Executive Director after previous experiences with the Northern Texas PGA and Middle Atlantic PGA.

There are seven different Topgolf games at the Naperville location, all of which utilize technology to measure the distance and accuracy of players’ shots towards a variety of targets.
Those first three elements are a common mixture for a fun outing with friends or family. Golf, however, is rarely combined with them, especially in winter. Enter Topgolf.

TopGolf is the company’s signature game where players tally points by guiding a ball into any target on the range. Points are given based on the accuracy and distance of each shot. TopChip places an emphasis on the short game. Players take a total of 20 shots: five at the four red targets 25 yards out, five at the two yellows 50 yards away and 10 towards the one green at 90 yards. TopDrive only awards points for balls that land in the white target 185 yards away. Points are subtracted for any ball that ends up in the other targets. TopPressure only utilizes the two yellow targets 50 yards away. There are three separate rounds, with the point values increasing each time.

TopScore is a higher-scoring version of the standard TopGolf game, with more points being rewarded for shots into the longest targets. TopScramble is best for groups with varying skill sets, as players are split into teams and scoring is tallied with a best ball format. TopShot is similar to TopChip in that you take aim at four separate distances with five shots each. Players can choose to start at the red (rookie), yellow (intermediate) or green (advanced) targets to modify the level of difficulty. FALL 2015 • CDGA.ORG 13
TOPGOLF FOOD Mark Boyton, Topgolf’s National Director of Culinary Research and Development, has a simple guiding principle while he develops each Topgolf location’s menu. “Food is fun. We want our food to be fun.” Boyton’s expertise, combined with the skills of a full kitchen brigade at each location, leads to a chef-driven and trendy menu more often associated with downtown restaurants rather than golf. “All I do is eat around the country’s best restaurants, looking at what the new food trends are, look at where we can take our menu to the next level,” Boyton explained. “I’m working nine months ahead on our menus, looking at the next thing that is going to be popular.” The Topgolf Naperville location sources 563 ingredients and 42 different menu items, some of which feature a local flair. Boyton cites the Topgolf burger, which is a unique blend of chuck, short rib and brisket, their pressure fried chicken wings and injectable donut holes as his personal favorites. “There are so many products that we put a lot of love and care into,” Boyton said. “We’re really proud of our food.”

Web.com Tour to Visit Ivanhoe in 2016 By Len Ziehm
Ivanhoe Club will host the Rust-Oleum Championship — a full field event on the PGA Tour’s satellite circuit – from June 6-12 in 2016. The event was played at Lakewood Country Club’s West course in suburban Cleveland the last two years. Shane Bertsch was the champion of last year’s Rust-Oleum Championship, which offered a $600,000 prize fund and paid $108,000 to the champion. Next year’s event will have a full 156-player field and be contested over 72 holes. The prize fund hasn’t been announced.

The Web.com Tour has been a developmental circuit for the PGA Tour since its founding in 1990. It was initially called the Ben Hogan Tour and later was known via its Nike, Buy.com and Nationwide sponsorships. The circuit had an annual stop in the Chicago area from 2002 to 2008, the tournament being known as the LaSalle Bank Open from 2002 to 2007 and the Bank of America Open in 2008. Kemper Lakes in Kildeer hosted the first of those tournaments with Marco Dawson winning the title in 2002. Then the event moved to The Glen Club, in Glenview. The champions there were Andre Stolz, Brendan Jones, Chris Couch, Jason Dufner, John Riegger and Kris Blanks. Dufner went on to win a major title, the PGA Championship in 2013. Ivanhoe was a logical new location for the Rust-Oleum Championship since its chief executive officer, Tom Reed, is a member of the club. Rust-Oleum took over sponsorship of the tournament last year after it was played as the Cleveland Open in 2014.
